1. Introduction: Hello and welcome to this online course on urban sketching. My name is T0 and I have been urban sketching since 2009. In case you don't know what urban sketching is. It's basically sketching on location from observation. Now we've urban sketching the excuse of being out there, creating art on location. That experience is actually as important compared to the odds that you create. I've actually created a serveral, unlike houses on urban sketching. Now with this particular course, we will be focusing on using mixed media to create those urban sketches. Now my primary media for creating art or sketches on location is pen, ink, and watercolor. But a thing with just this three media, you are going to have that pen, ink, and watercolor look when you introduce more media like for example, graphite pencil colored pencils, crayons, markers into your odd immediately your audit will take on a different look at different style or even a different feeling. So that is the beauty of using mixed media to create art and end this cause. I hope to be able to teach you all the techniques that I have learned over the years. 2. Influences: In this lesson, I'm going to show you some of my influences where I find inspiration. I'm going to show you some books. I'm going to introduce you to use Artists. And I'm going to show you some of these sketches that I have in my sketchbooks. So in this lesson, I basically want to show you examples of mixed media art you can create if you are into urban sketchy, definitely check out this book, The Art of urban sketching, drawing on location around a wolf. This book is off that by Gabriel Company Mario, who is an urban sketcher himself. And he's also the founder of the urban sketches community, basically a group of like-minded people who loves to draw on location. So what I like about this book is there are lots of beautiful at some bowls of sketches created by art is around a wool. And all his beautiful sketches, the were created with mixed media art. So it's not just pen, ink and water columnar. You can see quash. There are people who use colored pencils, crayons. Some people like to draw and is accounting books. Some people make sketchbooks. There are many tips and techniques shed and this book. And also if you want to explore more art from a particular artist's, their websites are provided in the book. So this is a book that I flipped through R3 often just to get inspired because of the huge variety of art. This towel that you can see, this sketch, for example, was drawn by Jacobian. This was drawn with a tweet, basically a piece of wood deep into a bottle of waterproof ink. And after the line OD has been created, what color is applied over it? There's two sketches were created by asked me and urban sketcher from Thailand. Here he used pencils with markers and this was with colored pencils. This was drawn on used paper back. The next book I want to show you is by Swarovski, a freelance illustrator, her urban sketchier based in Barcelona, spin. This is whole arm euro, a travel sketch journal. With this sketch, you can see the people in the background. They were drawing with very simple pencil lines. Some colored pencils were used as well. These again is to separate background with the subject. This sketch is interesting because it was drawn as Ziv, his insight, this glass cabinet looking at, at exit bits, other Alanines inside this glass cabinet. They would drawn with outlines, but ADA elements outside you can see to people, to visitors to the museum, they were just painted with watercolor, without outlines. This is actually just a reflection of this guy on the left. So Swarovski could have drawn outlines for this guy. But by not using outlines, the person who is looking at this catch Kang tell very quickly that this is actually just a reflection. There are many things you can learn just by looking at the art created by other artists. I get lots of ideas just by looking at other people's work. Here's another book I wanted to show you. This is by in Massa Renault, severe from top and bottom. So even on the cover, you can see this beauty Fu, mixed media art. I like this ink on what color all wash. So for this particular sketch, you can see inked lines were used. We have black ink. We have some color inks or maybe colored pencils. We have watercolor as well, and possibly some colored pencils because I see some textures here. Using mixed media is a very quick and easy way to make your sketches look more interesting. So with this particular sketch, I really like the textured background. I'm not sure what was used to create this background ville. This map was drawn with watercolor, with no lines. This was drawn probably with color pencils for the background here, for Sky, I'm not sure what was use. Maybe crayon because crayons are great for covering larger areas and for all these little details like the art possibly drawn with colored pencils. Ink sketch, just black and white. Ink and water color. In this case, it's just black ink with a very limited color palette, just green color. I loved a textures here. I really love her style is very loose, very fresh, very lightly, and very vivid. So you can see a lot of texture here because of the color pencils. Useful and Anja is drawing details, but also for shading, for coloring. And this is ink with watercolor again. You can find a lot of amazing urban sketches on Instagram as well. So this artist's Santi's solids as an urban sketcher, illustrator and graphic designer based in Spain as well. And on his Instagram pages you will see a lot of beautiful mixed media art. I get a lot of ideas just by looking at this beautiful sketches. And now let me show you some of my personal sketches. So I like to use pen, ink, and watercolor, mostly that sometimes I would use a little bit of mixed media or just Hugh create some texture just to create a little bit of variety. So for example, if this particular sketch, hen and waterproof ink were used to create the line art. I used white gel pen to create some details here and here. White opaque markers were used to create the letters here. And for the dequeues here, you can probably use what a collar or quashed who painted this RED rolling. But it's so much more convenient to use opaque markers to just draw over the white-collar YN watercolors dry, where this particular sketch I have used pen and ink for the line art and for the black shapes here, those were painted with Sumi ink, which is black ink that has very noticeable texture or granulation. And I've used watercolor, basically just this orange color to color or the colored areas. And used white gel pen to create the details. In this case, the frames for the Windows using a white job Han is very useful because it's very easy to draw little details. For example, here, it would be quite difficult, almost impossible to draw a cyclist with watercolor and brush. Here's a pencil and what a color sketch. We've some white gel pen for little details. This is cityscape sketch of Taizong, CT and high one. So here I use pen ink and water color. I've also use graphite pencil to create some textures on the clouds because he looks like it's going to run with the dark stormy clouds. I've also used white gel pen here, so it's y against color. And here I have colored ink pens. This is red ink against yellow. I have Lu, ink pens and all this, the ones with the lines with textures, those withdrawn with colored pencils. You can also use color inks with watercolor and just make sure your ink is waterproof. In this case here I have used red colored India ink, which is what a proof when dry or this catch the lines were drawn with this color pencil that I didn't realize was actually water soluble. So when I apply what Italo deadlines, lines actually dissolve. So before you actually used a supplies that you have to create art, make sure to test them first. Creating mixed media art is a lot of fun and unjust that it can improve your creativity as well. For example, you've got just using what a colour, you will have a thing about transparency, about shapes. If you use pen ink and watercolor, because ink has that extra contrast, it will get more attention away from what a collar. If you introduce color pencils now you can draw lines with colors. You can also use colored pencils to create textures. If you want more textures, you can use crayons. If you use or what color, light, wash, then you have to think about capacity above the inner ring. So the different types of media you use will help you think differently and that will actually improve your creativity. Alright, in the next lesson, we will be doing some hands on exercises. I will be showing you a mixed media drawing techniques. 3. Tools for mixed media: In this lesson, I'm going to show you the tools and supplies you can use to create a mixed media art. The fun thing about mixed media art he is you get to play around with a huge variety of art supplies. The dow psi is, well, this are not free. So the more supplies you want to buy, the more money you will have to spend. Other supplies that I personally use, they are not that expensive. These are New York holler, a wax pastels made by Karen Dutch. There are two versions. New color, one is water resistant and new color two, is water soluble. The quality for New York holler wax pastels is really high. This pastels are very vibrant. These are great for drawing, for writing even, and for covering large areas. Pesticides, all crayons like this are best used on smoother paper. This paper down using is co-present watercolor paper which has texture. So you can see a lot of the white of the paper shown through because the pastel cannot get into those areas. And this is hot press watercolor paper, which has a smoother surface. So now you can see, I can use the color to cover the paper almost completely. For our drawing exercises, we will be using the smooth hot press watercolor paper. When you get your art supplies, you should always experiment with them. So let me try rate yellow to see if I can produce an orange. So it seems like I have just covered the yellow. So overlaying, it's not that great wave of this sort of pest house. This is new color too, which is what a soluble. So that's at some water to see if we can dissolve this. And it dissolves quite nicely. So now you get a mixture of texture and a wash. You can also wet paper first and then draw with PESTEL on the wet surface. Basically, don't use that much water. If you use too much water and it covers the lines that you want to show, then you may have to actually do some correction, which is not going to look nice. So how much water to use? Ten really depends. But we have more practiced. You will definitely be able to get a hang of how much water to use. So let me try again. This time I have applied more wax PESTEL. And now you can see the pest hours doing a nice job repelling the water. To paint this with watercolor is actually not easy. So for example, let me just try and recreate this with watercolor. I can draw the shape is, can be a window, for example. And to paint the blue within little areas there, it's quite difficult, especially if you want your ships to be clean. See that there. Because this part is still wet. And when I painted this blue area, the paint, the color actually blends together. So it's not easy to create this using only water color. You have to wait for this to dry before you can paint the blue. So it's definitely not as easy compared to using. And what they're resistant. Wax pesto, between water resistant and a water soluble wax pastels, I recommend you get water resistant. One, if you have a budget than get both. There are two types of colored pencils, the normal color pencils and the water soluble color pencils. If you have limited budget, go with the normal color pencils. If you have more budget than you can get both. This set that I have here, it's made by call N14, which has a long history of making pencil products. And this particular set is caught poly collar, other brands I recommend our favorite, Castile and Karen Dutch. So this three companies, they make really good colored pencils. Color pencils are acquired versus hubs, so you can use them for drawing. You can also use them for coloring. You can use color pencils to Ghetto with watercolor. So just mix and match different types of. A year. And you can get different, luke, I could have painted the lack of water color and use the re-color pencils for this red area with mixed media. It's all about experimentation. Sometimes you want to know what you like until you see it. And now let's use water soluble color pencils. So that's maybe draw some vegetation or greenery. So you can actually mix different colours. We have colored pencils. So let's see how well it color dissolves with water. Depending on the brand of pencils you use, you may or may not be able to dissolve the pencil lines completely. The thing is sometimes you want to have the line so this could be grasped, in which case you definitely want some lines. Okay, at some rate, maybe for the flowers. Here I've drawn the same thing except with the normal color pencils. So I am painting a watercolor over this color pencils, which are not water soluble. The difference between these two is actually quite subtle Personally, I prefer it a normal color pencils because I like to see the texture of color pencil rather than have a texture of dissolve. But he really depends on your personal preference, which style you like, regardless of which art supply you buy, whether it's colored pencils or watercolour paint, try to buy light fast collars miss the colors that we will not fit when exposed to light. I find plastic boxes to be more durable because with metal boxes sometimes they can rust. This particular box actually is a Winsor Newton do Lux sketch a box which comes with colors. But over the years I have replaced all the colors, wave my own colors. Many companies would actually sell sestet array come with primary colors that are suitable for mixing with watercolor. You will also need brushes. There are many companies that make watercolor brushes, just to name a few. There are insane Newton, as go da, da Vinci. And this particular one, it's made by silver. It's called a black velvet. The hurricane be natural or synthetic. Generally speaking, natural hair can taper too much sharper point, which makes it easier to paint it dequeues for urban sketching of wall painting outdoors, I highly recommend you get collapsible brush or a pocket brush, such as this one that I have here. If you're just going to be painting indoors, maybe you can check out the silver black velvet, which is a really nice watercolor brush. I recommend you get a barrage. Daddy has size six. If you are working on paper that is about ten by seven inches, Aw, you work with E5 size sketchbooks. For our lessons, we will be using hot press watercolor paper because of this smoothness of a switch works really well if dry media such as graphite pencils, colored pencils and pastels. How ever, when it comes to using dry mediator, I prefer to use hot press watercolor paper. Can you see the texture of the paper here? So pastels and color pencils will find very difficult to cover textured paper like this completely. So this is the sort of looking you will get with dry meteor on very textured paper. What color paper is expensive to save money, you can actually buy larger pieces of watercolor paper, all one color paths like this and cut them down to size. So this is nine by trial and this is about half the size of this, but this is not two times more expensive compared to this. The paper I'm using for this clause is made by Fabriano, and this particular paper is called Studio watercolor paper. I find a prize to be quite reasonable. Make sure to get a hot press version. This is mean way of twenty-five percent cotton content and a paperweight is 300 GSM. This paper is available in 200 GSM as well as 300 GSM. 300 GSM is the paper that is thicker and it's less prone to buckling when you apply what color on it. I believe they actually sell Farber animal studio watercolor paper in like very thick pen. So that may be more economical to get to by, if you are a beginner who is going to practice a lot for the dry exercises, I will be using pencils instead of pen and ink because I actually have a lot of online odd causes that use pen and ink. I like to draw with red colored pencils as well. You can just use the red pencil that comes in your color pencil box set when you run your finger over graphite or when you are drawing and you have your palm on the paper and there is graphite, chances are you are going to smear the graphite over areas that you do not 12. So this has a needle point. These are available in different colors. Color ink pens are incredibly convenient when it comes to adding details. If you don't have the budget to buy so many colored ink pens, I highly recommend you get at least a white gel pen. The what job had is great for adding details as well. Off or adding some highlights. Now this works great on water color. Is white on what color? This is white on dry media, I would recommend getting a bottle of fixated on. This is basically to protect your art work. You don't need to use these with watercolor because when watercolors dry, it's permanent. But we've dry media. When you run your finger over dry media, you can still pick up the pigment. Using fixative is almost a mask if you create mixed media art in a sketchbook. Because when you close the sketchbook that pages we'll touch each other. You don't want a pigment who go onto the opposite pitch. Now before you used a fixative, be sure to test a fixative with artist supply that you are using. So for example, if you are using colored pencils, have the color pencils on a scrap piece of paper and sprayed a fixative over to task to see how well this will work. Because this works well. We have dry media. But when it comes to using this with ink, because we've mixed media art, sometimes you may need to use ink. I've actually not tasked up plus gama occurs with fixed CTF. Plus gamma occurs are said to be permanent, but permanent can have different meanings. Permanent can mean that you can use the markers on different types of surveys and when the paint is dry, it's permanent. However, permanent may not mean the colors of light fast. If you can get a set of posco markers, that would be grid. If you can't, maybe just get a few colors. White, yellow, red, and blue. Get the lighter colors don't get darker, dark blue or black. I have shown you a lot of artists supplies. It's not going to be feasible to get all of them. So let me recommend to you the bear is center shows that you should probably get, get pencils so they can draw them, get watercolor because it's very versatile. And get colored pencils, not water-soluble color pencils, just simple Narmer color pencils and get a white gel pen and pocket watercolour brush for your watercolor. So in the next lesson, we will create some odd with this supplies. 4. Warm up drawing exercises: All right, in this lesson, I have some hands on exercises for you. The goal of this lesson is to help you get familiar with your tools and supplies. Basically help you understand what your 2s can and cannot do. As take a look at the reference photo that I have provided. Now with mixed media art, the order in which you use your tools is actually important. So before we draw, let's try and think how we are going to approach drawing this soft drink cans. So at first, can we are going to draw as it is for a simple Coca-Cola can is just a RED Canada with white letters on it. So in this case we are just going to paint it red width for paint to dry and then paid white over it. And for this we have the SIM can almost the same. But there's this black here with white letters. Here are the tools we'll be using for this lesson. We have a white Gelb hen, a white opaque marker, a tube of white paint. Now if you have a tube of white paint it you may not need there's white opaque marker. But anyway, I will list all the tools and supplies, including some of the brands that I personally use in the class notes in case you want to use does seem Fran or same supplies. We have a box of watercolor. You're not going to unit so many colors. We're just going to use yellow a coup yellow, a warm yellow, a warm red CPU read one blue and coud knew the colors will be listed later on. A box with colored pencils, crayons. This are not water soluble. If you do not have crayons, doesn't matter, but you do need colored pencils and watercolour brush. Two cups of water, one for cleaning and one cup for clean water. And lastly, this tissue for drying and also fall cleaning up for beginners, I recommend using a limited color palette and because it's gonna make color mixing easier and it's easier to achieve color harmony. If you have too many colors, is gonna make color mixing challenging and have to colors work together nicely. Let's start by creating some line art. So I'll be using this black colored pencil. You can use graphite pencil as well. Let's draw a few cans first. So this is a front view of Ken. Nothing too complicated. You can also draw the can with a little bit off the top showing. So that's the pool tap. Just to give this a bit more detail. And for the bottom, we need to curve it as well. It seems we are looking at it from perspective. Alright, let's paint IVR and share all the colors 30 you are about to use. You can always have a scrap piece of watercolor paper by the site to test into colors first. So we'll be painting the Coca-Cola can for us, or we are going to be using a rate. This is a one rate. Let me just test it here first. As just paint this whole thing rate. Now if the color seems to be diluted as in you can see a lot of white of the paper. You may need to add more paint. So I'm going to paint two cans, will wait for this to dry before we add the details. While waiting, we can paint a sprite can, which is a blend of blue into green. Make sure to wash your watercolour brush in one cup and then wash it again in the other cup, the one with the clean water. So now this brush is loaded with clean water. We can paint this area here with water because we want the colors to blend softly. And when the brush is still where we can pick up some paint here we're going to use French ultramarine. What Italo will dry lighter. So we need to use a bit more paint to get the color intensity. So notice the color is softly, is blending softly on the paper because the paper, so the phase is wet. Next we will mix a green. But before we do that, let's wash our brush first. And to make some green, we'll be using this yellow, this is lemon yellow. You can use a hand saw yellow medium as well. Just place it on the palette here. And at SOM, failed blue jersey and a little bit of failed gluten at too much because they are Blue is a very strong vibrant color. Alright, so just add a little bit off the little blue there and paint this area here so you can see the colors mixing slowly and very nicely together. The amount of water that you use for painting the can actually matters a lot. So if you cannot get this effect, maybe change varied amount of water that you use. If you can't get the look that you like, doesn't matter, just draw a few more cans. Because this lesson is really about exploring your supplies and what they can and cannot do. Oops, this candidate submit lop-sided. Again, don't worry if you make mistakes like what I've done here. Just keep drawing. And now while waiting for this to two drying, we can add some details here. Notice can there seems to be a bit lighter compared to this. So I want to clean my brush and. Add a bit more red here. She is to make the colors more intense. I'm going to use Grid who paint at the top and bottom of the can. So to mix grays, you just have to use primary colors. I'm going to use a little bit of yellow. If you don't have enough water at more water, use a little bit of yellow and a little bit of RID and add a little bit of our trauma marine. If this is too yellow at a little bit of blue, at more blue, if this is two green at a little bit of red to it. More blue. Let's use the greater pinned at the top and bottom of the cans. This color here is actually much nicer. I've added more blue and red to it. So let me just see if I can paint over this, which seems to be a bit green. I can also use this color to paint some shadows. This is still wet, so I can't draw paint anything on top of this yet, but this is a 3D drawing. And I really like this texture here. Watercolor Beck Ron texture. So using this white gel pen, I can add some letters. Let's just write the lattice classic. For the larger white letters, we are not going to be able to use the white gel pen because the lines from the pan are too thin. So we have only used is tube off white paint. This is Chinese white pigment is PW six. Make sure you clean your watercolour brush. And I'm going to pick some pin concentrated paint straight from the tube. So make sure you're wanting other brush is clean otherwise you're going to contaminate the white color. Some of the letters we will not be showing because the goal behind can. If you find a White V2 transparent, means you need to use more paint and less water. So here I have added paint to make the white model pick. It will be good if you can use a brush with a very sharp tip. This will make a drawing details easier. The second can is also dry, so instead of using the white pin this time, I'm going to use this white opaque marker to write the letters. We'll see how well this works on what a color. If y is not intense, all pick enough. You can wait for the paint to try and go over the lines a second time. So this is definitely more convenient compared to you using the water column brush to draw the lines. That's right, the lettuce here. With mockers, We are not going to be able to produce thin and thick lines. And as we make the lines thicker by drawing over again and again. So that's the limitation of markers. So it's important to know what your 2s can and cannot do so that you can create the right look that you are looking for. So this, again is to watercolour brush. Using a watercolor brush is definitely not as easy compared to using markers. And also with this brush, you may notice, I use a lot of painters. So there is this drive browse type of effect. And now I'm going to paint at the top with black to mix black, I can use fellow blue with a little bit of one rate. Thiel Blue is a very intense colour. So just add a tiny bit of blue first before you add a tiny bit of a RED. If you add too much blue, you may have to use a lot more rate to neutralize that color. So it is color seems alright. I did not mix too much black because I did not I did not mix too much black because I don't have to use a paint such a big area. So notice I painted over there read, you can still see a little bit rate showing the room. So if you want to really covered and you can make small paint all wait for this to dry and then pick another layer while waiting for this to dry. Let's work on the ADA cancellers. So now I want to use yellow to paint a dot here. Make sure to clean your brush properly. And this time I want you to draw your brush, make it a bit drier because we need to pick up concentrated paint, in this case yellow. This is watercolour and it's particularly yellow is transparent. So if you apply transparent watercolor over this area, the yellow is not going to show as well, which is why we need more paint. You can certainly use yellow light. Yellow from Wash. U would actually be easier to use opaque yellow k. So we have a little bit of yellow there for the other sprite. Can I want to use these yellow crayon to see how it looks on this. Watercolor. Doesn't work that well. You can certainly see the yellow, but it's not that obvious. So I'm gonna use this yellow pig marker. Postcard marker. To draw over this to make the yellow more obvious. I pinned it to extra rate cans here because I wanted to test out of supplies. So non-linear task, there's white colored pencil on dried watercolor. So this is not very opaque. Which tells me that colored pencil over what the color is not a good combination that's tried is chorionic GYN a slightly better compared to the colored pencil, but definitely not as good compared to white paint. That's Jiang to the last can hear. And what do you use colored pencils to color? This is state. I may even want to add a little bit of orange here as well. And some long rate. Let me give this can walk holler. Basically, I wanted to cover the white of the paper. We already know that colored pencils, they don't work well over watercolor, but how about watercolor over colored pencils? So here I'm going to use the white paint to write the letters over colored pencils. So if you use thick paint, it should work well. So you can see here the look of the colored pencils is very different compared to what colour. And this white paint works. So much better compat to crayon and colored pencil on what color. The thing is. You want to be able to know what type of Meteor will work well to gather unless you test it for yourself. And make sure when using the white gel pen, the watercolor is completely dry, otherwise the wet so phase is going to mass with the white shell. Okay, and his books, his books. But a contrast is not as obvious compared to white gel pen on what a color. So if you want it more contrast here, you will probably you need to make a DOM grown darker and form this. And we're going to use crayons is dead because it's easier to cover larger areas using crayons. So the dry media look, it's very, it's very different compared to wet media. And for the bottom here we have this lime green color and maybe Dr. Green here. I'm also going to use color pencils for blending. I probably shouldn't have drawn to outline with this black. That's press down a bit harder to make the colors here more intense to create that look of radiation. So this is the column blend, sorry, colored pencil. Look, this is the crayon look. And now let's use can the white paint to paint the letters. This crayon is actually wax past also, I'm not sure of this white painting is going to work. Okay? And this does not work very well because the wax surface is actually repelling the pinned. So if you really want to use paint and you have to use a lot of paint, thick paint. So now we know we should not apply wet media on wax. How about the opaque marker? The Uni pause cow pig marker. Ok, this looks a bit better. But this is not a variable pixel. If I want to make the lines the White, White, I have to go over it a second time. That's have let crayon here. The good thing about working with dry media is you don't have to wait for anything to dry. And now let's apply white gel pen over this to see if it works. Oh, it does work. So this was drawn with the wax crayons, which we already know that does not work well with wet and mediators. So to draw the lines here, we need to use poised calm occur. These markers actually come with different waves. So if you need thicker lines again by the thicker markers, colored pencils work fine with white paint. Whatever media. When you have to watch the media on top of cut pencils. So this is what we have so far and we learned a lot about the tools and supplies that we have. For example, what the media don't work well over wax passed off, but you can still use white gel pen over the crayons. We know that what a collar can look over pencils because we use what a colour to colour or the line out here. But color pencils day don't work as well over what a columnar and what a collar is mostly transparent. So it's going to be a bit challenging to Ken that hc, I'll paint over the colors beneath. So in this case here, the yellow watercolor was too transparent. So I had to use the yellow pig marker to make the yellow more or pig more obvious. Or if you really want your paint it to be more opaque, you can use washer which is opaque, water cholera. So here I'm going to squeeze some paint straight from the tube onto to pitch. Hopes to much. So this is where you need to use this to clean up. Yep. Definitely too much pinned there. So this yellow is definitely more All-Pay compared to water color. I don't really use guage because I don't like that it's not permanent. Went dry in a sense that if you have paint on paper and if you paint over the wash again, the water will actually reactivate the hint. So for example, if this was painted with wash. And you have a wet watercolour brush, maybe we've all without color and you paint over the wash. You can actually wash out the colors. What a collar, on the other hand, is more permanent because they're binary used to create what color is gum Arabic. Gum Arabic is added. Watercolors will make it easier for you to paint. So when you add water to water color, it dissolves to gum arabic dissolves. And when you paint the gum arabic dries and wearing gum arabic dries, it's more difficult for the gum Arabic to be activated again with water. If you do want to use wash for the opacity, I highly recommend you use it together with fixative. So after you paint your quash jazz use fixative to spray over, to wash, to fix it onto the paper to make it more permanent so that when you paint a subsequently years, you will not reactivate the first layer. Alright, so in this lesson, we have learned a lot about our 2s and supplies. If you still have empty space on your pitch, you can keep drawing. Practice small. In the next lesson, we will be hitting outdoors to draw a more complicated scene using the techniques that we have learned in this lesson. So, see you in the next lesson. 5. Sketch a church (Part 1/2): Sketching is fun because we get to visit places. And even for places that you have been to countless times. When you start urban sketching, you will be able to see all these places that you have been to with new eyes. You get that feeling of being a tourist even in your own neighborhood and deaths, the really fun part about urban sketching. So for this particular lesson, I'm showing you around Little India, which is a really colorful neighborhood here in Singapore. My country. When it comes to urban sketching, it would be good to explore the neighborhood first. Just take your time and Walker, explore. Don't just draw the first thing that you see because sometimes when you see sudden subjects, debt composition, debt view that you see it may not be the best view. So definitely take your time and walk around to find a basket composition to find a best way you can present the scene when you draw. So for example, if this tempo you can see it's very detail. I probably wouldn't recommend a beginner to tackle this. Or if you really wanted to tackle drawing that complicated tempo subject, you will be good to actually warm up first with a simpler, less detail sketch and then move on to tackling more complicated subjects. So in this neighborhood, there happens to be this Methodist church. This is the front of the church. The view isn't that grid because from the front view looks quite flat. So if you draw the first view or the first scene you see, you would probably missed out on a better view such as this view which is seen from the site of the church. In this lesson, we are finally going to draw an urban scene to make their learning process easier. We are going to draw with this reference photo. Plateaus will be using for this lesson are colored pencils, watercolour, maybe some markers are white gel pen, wax pastels are crayons. Now this tomb on not water soluble. And finally we have what color paper in this case, this is hot press. Watercolor paper has a smooth surface. Now this watercolor Pat is nine by 12 inches. But for this particular lesson, I'm just going to cut the paper into half to draw on a smaller area. So I've just for the large piece of paper into half, cutting it with a penknife. He careful and you are cutting the paper. Sort of humor has been cut down to size. This is approximately a five size. The mindset when it comes to draw on a bigger vs. small a piece of paper is actually different. So on a larger piece of paper, we have this tendency to draw more details and we do need to add more details because. When you draw big metadata details, the sketch can look unfinished, so it's easier for beginners, in my opinion to just draw smaller so that I can draw more and experiment more. Alright, so with this particular scene, let's try and draw the longer is our largest admin first in this case, it would be that, that structure there in the middle. So when we feed something that is very big onto the pitch, we will be able to feed all the other elements which are smaller. So I'm going to start by drawing the vertical line here, right here in the center. So this line here is towards the left side slightly because we see a lot more of the beauty on the right side, as well as the background here, some trees in the background as well. And now we can draw this structure. Don't be afraid if you make mistakes, you can always draw later on, practice a second time. Okay, we have this realm structure here, up here, chewing structures here. So there's this big piece of war here. Now we are going to use this as the measurement unit. So this is about one unit. So the age of the war there, it's about two units. So one unit, two unit. So the age of the war is going to start here. It's going to end somewhere here right in the middle, relative to this very long line that we have just drawn. And that's just fraud. The little details. If you are not able to draw the details, doesn't really matter. What's important here is to actually draw the thickness of the wall. It is even for my sketch hits looking a bit. It's not looking like the reference photo again. Alright, so what's important is actually this this thickness of the wall which we want to capture. Yep, so this catch, it's definitely not looking like the reference photo. Again, there is this protruding shelter area here for the door that is beneath. So there seems to be window, rather tall windows. So let's draw that. It's black. So maybe that's just sheeted with black. Some texts here that I kind of see. And across here, which I'm going to draw a very light, very faint pressure. So four lines that contribute to the form of the beauty. And I'm going to draw with very thick lines of stronger pressure, habia pressure to get the lines to be more obvious. But for little details sometimes that are on the wall, I can just draw them with very faint. Pressure like this. Next, let's switch to Eric pencil to draw the roof. Sometimes that duty is to remind myself that I'm going to use some other media to color the roof later on. So there's written roof, the top, we'll start here and it should, and somewhere here, which is aligned to this here. So it's going to look like this. Hopes to line's not debt Street. Doesn't matter. And we have the bottom of the roof here, which is going to add some where here, like this. And let me switch back to the pencil again. So this building here will go down all the way like this. The roof is made of towels. So with towels, there is texture. So maybe you literal now and use crayons to color this era here or I can use colored pencils. Let's switch back to using the black pencil to draw this shelter areas here, there seems to be a few doors, right? Behavior. Now if you are unable to see the photo clearly, you can zoom into the photo. Now Android one location, we tend to be able to see more details because our eyes can see more details compared to what a camera can capture. Some windows here. You can see my sketch. It's really, really loose. Even some of the details are not dead accurate. But the main thing to note is the more time you spent observing your subject matter and draw, the more accurate your sketch can be. Alright, let's move on to the right side here. Again, I'm going to use the color pencils to draw the roof, or maybe that's just draw the the white part of the building first. Okay. It is time around, we have the wall again, about two units away. So let me just draw it ultimately here. And we have this little structure here. This part should, and fairly close to where this is. So let's add a little bit off thickness to the side wall here. Go all the way up and, and here. Wheel and somewhere here. And go to the right site, go up Kin. And we then we come down, there are some perspective going on. So some of the lines that are too to make sure you cute them because the vanishing point is actually somewhere around here. So those lines that pointed to the vanishing points should be tilted in that direction. But don't worry about perspective if you cannot understand it off. If you don't know much about perspective. Because again, how accurate us catch is. Really depends on how good you are observing the scene. Now for this particular area here at the bottom, there is actually this line at 2Ts up, which is the boundary of the beauty of the exterior of the building. So we need to draw that. So this is the structure that is holding the fans and we have this line at two sub selectively. Oops. Okay, let's draw some vertical lines to represent a fence. This is the front of the church. As I continue to draw on this site here. Now as you are drawing, always tried to keep an eye on the overall sketch. So for example, I still need to draw the background. I need to make sure that when I am drawing all this, I need to leave space for the back. Well, you don't have to run out of space. So for elements that are in the background here which are very difficult to see, it's about simplification. So we won't be able to draw that much detail. All you wanted to do is to draw the big elements first. So computing and background just draw a big elements, big shapes burst. And when you don't have any space left to draw the details, you can leave out the details. So this is the beauty thing behind. You have some windows here, which I'm going to just shake like this because I'm not, I don't have enough space to draw the windows as rectangles. So I'm just using this color pencils to print a little areas of shading. Now for the buildings in the background, there are actually a few tall buildings being a background. I'm going to draw them with lighter lines. It is more difficult to see the useful elements that are further away. So we can draw them with lighter lines, all with thinner lines. And for a Windows, I'm just going to use light lines like this to draw them to suggest, damn, actually. That's continued to draw this structure here. There seems to be a truck driving to its background, so maybe I want to draw the truck. Now when drawing vehicles, you have to work really fast. Otherwise, you can just draw trucks that are vehicles, they are pumped beside a root k. So let's move to this area here to draw the roof again with the red pencil. So we have the roof here. Now if you walk or draw faster, your sketch is going to look blue, sir. If you draw slower, your sketch is going to look neater. So there is this whole lock of area here, which is just the trees which are behind this beauty here. So when we draw Ls, makes sure that the tree appears behind feuding. And it'll be good to create such a mix of colors. Switching between mixing different colors. So I have darker green and now I'm using a lighter green. And I can switch to using colors, sorry, this yellow here. And maybe even a little bit on red here and there. Just to give this area, this area more interesting. We have a car parked here, sorry about the reference photo, which seems to be a bit chopped off that just draw a car here. This is the back of the window and this is the disorder to wheels seen from the site for the roofs here, we'll be coloring them with crayons. Now the direction of the towels, as in this direction. So when we color, we can try and full lot that direction of that taus. If you don't have crayons, I'll Rackspace style, you can actually just use colored pencils. And same thing here when tailoring their roofs. Here, we can introduce additional color. So this is red, this is orange. Just had a little bit of additional Carlota that maybe some lighter orange or even yellow. So when I mixed colors, I try to use colors that are close to the mean color. So in this case, if I use rate, I will use orange or even purple, which is close to read. But here I am using the warmer colors. So do that for the other roofs as well. So notice for this roof here I call it in this direction, but for the roof on this side here, I have to color in this direction where to line 2Ts in this direction. And a really important thing to take note when coloring the roof is try to make sure you get the shape right. So if it, if there is a shut angle here, make sure you get that sharp angle right. Let's add additional color here. Okay, now fall on the bottom of the first root, there is actually black going on. So I'm going to use black crayon to create the shadow beneath the roof. Note that this is what the sorry, what yeah. What the insoluble marker. This is not water soluble basically. So we will not be painting watercolor over the markers. And we had this shadow shape here, which is tilted at an angle. Now sometimes do mix shadow colors, for example, in this case I use black. You can actually use blue to paint the shadows. Okay, let me use blue to show you what happens. There's these tiny cast shadow here caused by the wall on the right side. So here I'm using bloom as the shadow color. Now, when you use different Kozmo shadows, it's going to look, the colors are going to look out of sync or not harmonious. So it's best to stay with a consistent color for the shadows. Here, I'm just showing you that you can use on the colors other than black. Just create shadows. Look at your sketch to see where else you need to apply the crayons. So we have the root here as well. And there's a little bit of color here. At the front of the church. There is some colored hearing. I'm not sure why there's this block of color hair. And here on the left side, this roof or the beauty in the background, it's in orange, are read. As I was coloring a sketch, I notice I left certain details which now I want to hit before I paint with what a colour. So there are additional doors here, additional details here. Mall buildings in the back ground or tall buildings in the back, Chrome. And here there seems to be some high-rise residential blocks here in yellow. Some details here. On the side of tall structure. Right at the top we have some T2 says well order we deduce. So when drawing the little details are four areas that should not have debt much contrast, I'm gonna draw them with very light and lines, very light pressure. Before the exterior. I'm going to have darker lines. This is what we have. So firm. There is this big tree here at the corner. So I went to draw that tree with crayons. Crayons are great for covering over large areas. You can certainly use color pencils as well, no problem. So for this tree, I'm going to have a lot of texture and this tree is actually blocking out a lot of deaths guy. So let's try and cover the paper as much as possible. Let's have some stray branch hanging out here. Sometimes it can look a bit more interesting. Let's add some color here just to make this area are more interesting. Not too much because the main color is actually dark green. And that's, and introduce a little bit of read and see what happens of k looks or ride, maybe some magenta. One I'm trying to do here is to create a shadow that darker leave. So I'm trying to mix Greening with this purple color. So see if it actually can mix into a much darker color. Doesn't work that well. So let me switch back to this green. If this doesn't look good to you, no problem. Try and draw the scene again. And this time around, swished through different media to create the tree. I'm going to introduce on branches as well. Now if y'all box of crayons have limited colors than most of the colors that you want. You have to actually mix using the limited set of colors that you have. Maybe I can draw some leaves as well, just please, I'm little thoughts here outside. Kay? 6. Sketch a church (Part 2/2): And now let's paint at the sketch with what a collar. Now with watercolor, always prepare a two cups of water, one fall cleaning the brush, and one for you to have access to clean water is palette is from the previous lesson. There are still some paint here and a well which I can reuse because what a colour can be reactivated with water at and lives when they asked you on the palette. But when a watercolor is on the paper, it's pretty permanent. So that's painted the largest area first, which is going to be the blue sky. If you want the sky to blend softly into the clots, wet the paper first one, the clots to have sharp ages than you should paint on dry paper. So here I'm just going to put some water on the paper. And I'm going to add a lot of our charm marine on the paper. So this is French ultramarine. There is this cloud here. Try not to paint over the areas that are supposed to be white. And if your paper or sorry, if you're cholera is moving in the wrong direction, you may want to toot your paper to have the watercolor flew down like this. So for the background here, I'm going to paint with ultramarine s. Well, just little areas we're ultra Marine. Because remember, perspective clouds that are nearer to Earth are going to be bigger. Clouds that are further away are going to be smaller. So when we are appending blue, we're actually painting the space between the collapse. When the wash is still wet, you can actually use tissue to try ops certain areas to give the impression that there is more white, more clots. Sometimes I like to add colors, even though the color she didn't dare, just to create contrast. In this case, I want to create contrast between the sky and beauty things. Don't leave out this area here. Now notice does color that I just added, it's different from this. So when you're painting, try to paint everything with one stroke. Otherwise, when you go back again to add pin a second time, that second time, it's not going to look like the first time. Next up, we are going to paint the shadows using a mix all French, ultramarine or ultra Marine with burnt sienna. Now for the shadows, we need to make stem a bit darker because it's a very sunny day. So we have strong cast shadows. And direction of the light is coming from here. So we have shadows on the left side of the building. So that's just paint here. Make sure their shadows are, they are darker compared to this guy when the wash is still wet, you can actually add more ultramarine to basically charging extra color into the wash like this when a wash is still wet. So for areas that are supposed to be in shadow color than with shadow. Here, I've added a bit more burnt sienna, maybe a bit too much. Make sure you do and paint over the white areas. So there is this thickness of the wall here that you should not paint over. So this shelter era here and there's a little bit of white which you should not paint over. The bottom here. Don't be afraid to use a lot of paint, especially foreshadows. So this seems to be a bit darker than I expected, but we'll see what happens when this dries later. What a color wheel dry, lighter. K. So for this here, we can, again with the same mix, some shadow, some cast shadows here. And here. I want to add a bit more lu to the shadow here just to make it more interesting rather than just this completely mixed, ray, makes sure that you paint the street lines straight. And this part here, it's completely in shadow. And this side, or here it's in shadow. So as you paint over and rule view, we'll notice the water as being repelled by the Ruth. In this case, I used wax pastels, so it's going to repel the water. This whole area here is in shadow. And this part here also, and shed it. Now even though the road is supposed to be gray, I'm going to live it as white because it's lit by Sun. And let's move to the right side, you see where else we can paint it, the shadows. So SCU opinion, you may notice that in areas that you had up forgotten too, draw some details that you may have left out. So I left two windows here, which I'm going to try and remember it huge role later on. And I also let out this growth wall we know. I've use three colors, baldness mix. Here, I have added a bit more color. I've had it and to make this more interesting. And Ford is big tree here I have drawn with colored pencils and a Pinto over water calendar and add it white gel pen. So this tree here, it's not as recognizable as a tree compared to the tree here where I have branches. And I just realized that I can actually see a bit more involved have fought though here. So there's actually this sign bought here on the right side that tells you how much packing is for the cop. Ok. That's located on the right size. So I went to draw that in because I accidentally left that out. And one good thing about using color pencils is if you realize you had forgotten to add some details, you can draw them in easily with colored pencils. However, if you use watercolor up there, you realize you need to draw an additional things. It can be a bit more inconvenient. It's going to be morgan convenient to add details using watercolor after you clean up. So using mixed media can be convenient, but sometimes it can be inconvenient as well because you have to keep switching the 2s. Now I'm just adding the lamppost at. I just realize I did not draw the year that we used a white gel pen to add in some details which were lost when I painted watercolor overdone lines. So we've mixed media. It can be very convenient to add additional detail views, not till you have painted with what a color. So this is a close up of their sketch. I like the mix of texture and watercolor. Alright, in the next lesson, we are going to sketch another street scene, just who get more practice. 7. Sketch Chinatown (Part 1/2): Onto the second drawing tutorial, this is a photograph of Chinatown, Singapore which you can download. And this is the photo we will be using for this tutorial. As usual, when you're sketching on location is best to walk around the ERA first, to Scott for the best position two scatch to look for the best view, look for a shady spot where he can stand or sit to draw. Whereas for buildings in the center, the vertical lines are steel vertical. But once the vertical lines go through the ages, they start to tilt inwards. When you're drawing on location, all the vertical lines will appear as vertical. So when you work with a photograph, there are going to be some distortions. When you work with photographs, there are going to be distortions because I've been urban sketching or sketching on location for years, I can spot and distortion. So if you are just drawing exactly what you see from a photograph, someone who has been urban sketching, we'll be able to tell whether or not your sketch was actually drawn on-location. Anyway, VOD is tutorial. I will be making some adjustments. Is Liao We'll be making the vertical lines, vertical. These are the tools we'll be using for this lesson. Uniprot cow or pig markers. When you are drawing, people, go slow and try to draw what you see rather than what you think you see. So when you draw, really focus on the shape of the person. When you're drawing a location, throwing people is actually much hungry because people are always movie. Alright, so that's draw the roof here. There's an extension here at tall. Now when you draw the very steep angled lines dare you may want to use a pencil to measured angle. And remember that angle, because for beginners, this diagonal line is sometimes they may play tricks on your eyes. So one thing I do is to use this pencil and put it down. Or I may stretch out my arm and measure the angle and remembered angle. So when you're drawing, don't think of yourself as drawing a roof. Think of self as drawing an angle line. And angle is the one that you remember. So this will come down here and here, and this is the site of the water right side off the wall is building here. There is this psi bought here, which you probably can't tell. It's sidebar that's hanging on a site here. And we can add some little details here. Now the windows here on this side are very compressed so you can draw like really compress windows, but we'll draw them later on. Let's divide this beauty here into smaller and smaller sections. So there's a line that runs beneath the city bought here and a birth. This sign here, psi here. And this line will go down at an angle. There are some peelers here. Now drawn beak shapes first. When you cannot feed any details, when you find it very difficult to add any more details, don't and draw the details. So that's how you simplify or seen case. So we have another structure here. The mean thing to note about this particular scene is there are a lot of dynamic perspective lines. So you need to get the angles of those lines accurate in order to portray and accuracy. And we're gonna draw them with colored pencils. So instead of using what color lead on to color this yellow window, I'm just going to use colored pencils to crawl the windows. And you can see it looks pretty nice with the colored lines. This is a smaller window. And now I'm going to switch to using this crayon to draw those bullets. The top off the bullet is actually at a high level of pedestrians. And for this particular bullet, the bottom end somewhere there. And I have drawn the bullet behind this person. There is a not a bullet on the lattice site. And at top of the bulla is right here. Same thing at the heap level there. But this bulla is quite near to us, so we can draw this really huge. You can switch to using a black crayon to draw the patents. So I'm going to draw this Pepin here. Now if you are looking down, this line will be curved slightly using the same crayon Maybe I can color this person here has, well, make sure when you color the shape of the person is deal, recognizable. Alright? You can either use crayons to color this person or you can use watercolor. It's up to you. Now we can continue to add detail cuz that's smooth onto the right side. Let's draw the yellow building in the back ground, the top of the yellow beauty. We'll start here at the midpoint of this to, to roof. I'm going to draw that yellow building with very faint, very lighter lines because later on I want to use watercolor to create their ship rather than use pencil lines to highlight that beauty. So I'm just going to draw with really thin lines and make sure you draw the angle line on the site at, at the correct angle. And make sure you leave the width of the beauty. I mean, the front of the building. It's about one unit and the side of the beauty and subpar, half or three-quarters of that unit. We can add a person here who is walking. And we can add more details to the side of this building here. There seems to be a light here. Again, when you're drawing on location, you will be able to see more details compared to what you can see and photograph. Or you can choose to zoom into the photograph. K, We have this person walking here. Now to practice drawing people. He just have to draw a lot more people. Okay, so let's move on to the right side. We have short building here. It's a white viewing. We've written roof or pink, orange type of roof. Agreed viewing here with this dynamic line that points down to this area here. So this is the corner of the building and this is oddest side of the building. We have some roof here. We have a diagonal line here as well. And I'm going to keep phi. No, I'm going to leave this as it is right now. I'm just going to paint this whole year with watercolor and draw the details with white gel pen. So that sun planning in advance. Lets draw the truck that's popped here. So trek looks like this. The trunk is a boxy shape. This is the front of the truck. Site Mira we have is extension on the back, some real links. We have wheels. Now, this term is also affected by perspective. So the diagonal line should also point to the vanishing point. So you see this line I've just drawn, this is, just looks very vertical, so it's technically not that accurate. So I'm going to shoot this slightly down like that. And this line here to up slightly because he is affected by the perspective on the vanishing point on the right side. We can put some lights on Divan, some wheels here, and another wheel here. And remember when drawing trees tried to mix the colors so that the trees can look more interesting. You can actually use the green and yellow color pencils to draw this beauty in the background. But I wanted to use watercolor because there is cast a shadow on this side of the old wall. Remember the drafting lines I drew earlier? So I didn't follow those drafting lines that strictly. So now I've run out of space on the right side and I'm gonna use my artistic impression to make some of their shop houses here disappear. Soda can bring that beauty on the right side here, closer in. So this time I'm going to draw the beauty thing here. This shop house building on the right side. First. And this bottom here, this diagonal line will go to the same vanishing point on a side. Let me divide this beauty into half through the roof and then draw the window here. In this area. There seems to be light posed here. So let's draw the light post as a lamp here. When drawing, try to draw elements that are in the foreground first and then draw the elements in the background so that you get that overlapping. Look. K seems like looks still the senior steel looks alright. K, that's using the orange crayon again, we need to draw the bullets. This is what we have so far. As you continue to draw, you will reach a stage where you don't know where else to add details. That is the stage where you can stop drawing. 8. Sketch Chinatown (Part 2/2): The second part of this tutorial, we are going to paint this sketch with watercolor. So I'm going to start by painting with a light color, in this case the yellow. I'm gonna pin this yellow beauty and background. I'm going to mix this yellow with a little bit of orange so that the yellow is not that unnatural. If you look at the photo closely, those yellow ships are actually square shapes. But I'm going to paint this as a vertical rectangle. And I'm going to separate the yellow later on with the green bird, sorry, separate the yellow later on with green horizontal lines. And I went to pin this side as well. This is the side of the building. And we're going to add a little bit more orange to paint this sign here. Next. That's paint this red beauty in care. Make sure you use a lot of red paint. Make sure you use a lot of rate paint. You can mix it with a little bit of orange on your gum Bosch to create some variety. Or you can add a little bit of yellow to it. To make the wash look more interesting. The reason we need to use more PIN here is because later on we will be drawing with, I mean, drawing the details we have to white gel pen. So we need White to contrast with strong read. While you still have red paint on your brush, look for other areas in the scene that has read and paint. Those eras with the same rate. This yellow muting is now dry, so now I'm going to mix a green with lemon yellow or yellow with the low blue. This is green I get, and I'm going to paint the age of this building with this green. Make sure to leave a gap between this building and disputing on this side. Because you can see this guy between those two buildings. And I can use this same grain to divide the yellow shape. And this green we'll continue down here at an angle. To suggest the windows on the side of this beauty, I'm going to mix rate into the green, just mix a tiny bit of rate into the green disk. We will neutralize the green to produce a darker color. So when drawing those tiny little lines mixture, you draw them slowly. Let's draw a line here which is at an angle. And I'm going to draw a line here, which is at an angle and then draw the lines in between this we'll help you get isn't how you draw that perspective of this lines more accurately, rather than having to draw top to down. Let's paint the sky. So for the sky, I'm going to use ultramarine mixture to wash up, brush properly first before you pick up to ultramarine. So that's pin to sky. And leaving this area white border clots. If you want some variation with the sky, you can't add some fail boo, just a tiny little bill failed due. So once you have failed blue and ultra marine mixed to gather, you can see some variation in color. And let's draw some sky here. We can see a little bit of sky here. And some guy here as well. Maybe some sky here at the top. But don't paint over the White Building, right? The clouds doing a look puffy enough. So now I'm going to wash my brush fairy thoroughly and use clean water to paint the area where the clouds are, Hmong Ray. So when we paint a gray later on, He's going to spread on a wet surface hopefully to produce the puff iss of clots in here as well. And maybe some here. Don't pin overheard building. So before the paper is dry, quickly mix Leiden wash of ultra marine and burnt sienna. Daunted mix the colors to completely, right. For the darker clouds, maybe you want to mix more paint. So here I've used more ultramarine. It looks a bit more blue. I need to have more burnt sienna to make this MOOC r0. If you did not read the area here properly, for example, here, it's not wet. You can see the sharp H. And also the areas here. You can see all this shot ages. They don't look much like clots. So painting the sky like this, we have shut ages. It's a very Stahl lies are a type of look. Well the sky or the surface is still wet. What a clots are steel wet. Lets try and pick up or soft and aegis, aegis softer. And now comes the fun and exciting part, adding shadows. So for shadows, we're gonna mix a darker mix of ultramarine and burnt sienna. Try not to mix the paint completely because completely on the palette. So I'm going to start out with a bit more ultramarine first and paint the cast shadow here just below the building. Makes sure to have the sharp H. And notice here I overlaid onto the windows. And this cast a shadow. We'll continue to the side of this building. Notice these color, it's looking quite flat because I'm mixed a colours to completely. So while the wash is still wet, I'm going to charge in some extra ultramarine to shift the shadow more towards x2. And I can add some burnt sienna to shift the shadow back to mall caret. So this whole area here on the side of the building, it's going to be in this shadow color. So I can pin it all the way down. And this sign what here, the side of this line bought is in shadow areas cost shadow down the side of this sign here. And all of this is in shadow. The cost of shadow on the sign here on this sketch is not that obvious. So I want to make some bit more paint. I'll try Marina burnt sienna mink that caused shadow more obvious. Right? I mean, try and feed the color and this seems to be too dark now. All right, this should work. So when this is dry later on it should dry, lighter. And now let's paint the shadows on the ground here. And this Shad DO here. And this person seems to be in shadow, so that's just paint him in shadow. I can use the same shadow color to paint this great beauty. And I can use in the same shadow colored pin. All these people were here. And background Addis areas are going to be painted black later on. Don't paint over the truck because it's even light. It's under the sunlight. So just look for the areas that are under the shadow and paint the shadows for them. So this shelter is casting shadow here. I'm shadows here and here as well. This whole area here is going to be black later on while waiting for the paint to dry. Let's work on other areas first, that's use colored pencils to draw this sign. There is some blue here. So little details like this would be very difficult to paint with watercolor. I can also use the rate here to draw over to draw the details on this yellow beauty thing. Or you can actually use the post gama occur. This building here has an orange r or rate groove. So either you use this breed color and maybe mix it with orange. You can also use watercolor to paint this little details on this sign using this brown colored pencil, I'm going to draw some details for the Windows. Now, this 1000 non look exactly as the photo. So I'm using my own artistic interpretation. All the windows here, this whole area is already dry so we can use the white job hand to draw to Windows. And I'm going to separate this a rehear into different sections. First, this will be the top flaw. This OP does second flaw and out of Florida is lower. There is this sign BAD hanging on this side here. So I wanted to draw that sign bought and alive will continue here and here. So for Windows, yep. I'm just going to draw them like that. As continue the windows on this floor. And we can add some details here, and there seems to be another sign, one here. For the windows here, I can see more why? So instead of the white gel, Andy Steiner, I'm going to draw the windows with is POS car marker. If it's not white enough that you can consider using wash or draw or paint on this second time using the scar markers. So I guess I realized I need to paint this side of this viewing. We've shadow as well because the light source is coming from the left side. So let's paint this shadow area near carefully. This is the same altro Marina and burnt sienna mix from earlier. I think it cover the details in a bit too much. So. Try and paint again. Now when you do corrections, it's going to affect your original work. So it's best to get it right the first time parallel. Otherwise, it's not going to look yes, nice. So you're on the mix walls to dark. So this time let's see if I can make a lighter color over. It. Still doesn't look as good. But I'm gonna leave this as it is, because if I'm going to make any more corrections is gonna look even worse. Next, we are going to paint the blacks. For blacks, we can mix. Fatal bloom with a warm rate. This is fatal blue mix with a warm rate. So this color is, as you can see, it's very dark. So I'm using this color basically to paint all the areas that are supposed to be close to black. You can see the one rated I've used error. So when pinning the shadow, sorry the black shapes, make sure to get the shapes correct. I can pin this area much darker as well. So many of the areas here underneath the first law, they are close to black, the windscreen, the side mirrors of the vehicles, they also close to those all look like lack the wheels. Definitely black. Bottom of the vehicle. Sometimes they appear as black as well. I can use this black to pin the shape of this person that's walking. And I'm gonna paint back ground here, the shops, you're black. Now, I'm going to pin this whole area here. Early on I brewed a railings on the fan with pencil, but now I'm going to paint over because I think it's better to have white gel pen over the black rather than have pencil over and above that. So let's paint all this area. Now when you're painting, please bear in mind to make sure that all the ships are recognized the boss. So when you're painting the vehicle opinion such a way that this truck here it's recognizable. This person standing here, it's recognizable. This area here is also black. And yep. Definitely here. And here. Most of the time the bottom of the vehicles will be lack using the same black. Now I can add little details to the windows here. Now we can just look around. I went to color the lamps here with this color, a street lamps here. Remember the colorful flax. Let's color the flag. We have crayon. Crayon, it's not oh, Pig enough. So maybe you may want to use posco markers and stable. This is definitely not o pig enough. Anyway, as dementia and many times in this course. It's all about experimentation with mixed media are about finding out the limitations of the media that you use at some dots underground for texture. Maybe use this color to paint the vehicles in the background. There are some yellow road markings. So I'm one to use this. Let's use the yellow Posner markers and escape because the crayon is not that oh Pig. So let's draw the street markings with paused GAR, markers in state of the crayons. So this is mall pay compared to the crayons. And we have a mocking Sierra as well. I left out the roof here. So this whole area here should be much darker. Use wet gel pen 2S, T2s. And lastly, remember to write the date of the sketch so that you can refer to it in the future. With mixed media art, there are a lot more supplies, unlike water color, where you just have to bring watercolor and watercolour brush with mixed media, you have to bring a lot more supplies. And with urban sketching, it can be a bit inconvenient because we've all this applies to you have to find some space to actually put them a whole laid him down. So my suggestion is to look at the supplies they use most frequently and bring those in state of everything. Here's a closer look at the sketch. Again, it's do add some more details or some more colors to areas that I've left out. I can use the white gel pen now to draw the railings. Make sure you have to cable cold down like this because of gravity. And we have this cable here that connects to this grey building behind. For the decorations, I'll be drawing them with this RED posco markers. So some are big, some are small. This are the small ones, and these are the big ones. So you can see the contrast. We have red on red, it's not that obvious. Later on we will pin some white within the rate. And now using the white postcard marker, we will add the white within the array. That's at some details on the declarations, the hanging decorations. Adding the hanging decoration in front of the building really helps create a bed illusion of depth.
