Creating a user persona for your UX design project is essential to stay on track and focused while you are in the process of designing for your product. Using research data from user interviews and other research methods provide the rich content that is incorporated into a user persona template.

In this class, we learn about the concept of a user persona, how research data is gathered and organized, and how a persona is built on actual insights from research. Then, we study the building blocks that serve us when composing the overall user persona template, how to choose the right photograph, how to write the persona's story to highlight their emotional journey, and how to include an infographic to push the visual appeal of the template. 

We then take a look at how to design a one-page, eye-catching user persona template that can be used as an industry-standard prototype. Lastly, we take a look at some examples by other designers.

The class projects can be uploaded to the class gallery, so that everyone can see everyone else's interpretation of their own user persona template.

1. Intro: welcome to this UX Design Essentials class on how to create a user persona. My name is Eva Shaker, and I'm really excited to be here today with you. I come from the world of New York City advertising where I've worked as a creative director and designer for over two decades. And I believe that knowing the UX design tools that we have is essential when we want to design the right thing for the right audience. I've created a presentation for you that will give you a quick overview of what is you X. Then we dive into a step by step approach on how to design our own user persona based on the illustrator template provided for the class project. Well, then review what we've learned on. We'll look at some other templates that designers have posted online. So with that, without further ado, let's get started. Okay? 2. Overview on UX: So what is you X, also known as user experience user experiences to find every interaction a person has with product. You X is sometimes called human experience, or H X because we want to refer to the person who is engaged with a product. And the product can be a device, a service, an experience, an event or even a space. Now, how does UX happen? Because you X is an experience. Experiences happen by seeing or by touching or hearing, for instance. Now this poses to question what exactly is a user persona? Well, they use a persona. Is a fictional character who represents our audience or our customer? He or she represents the median values that we've gathered from our data from research or user testing. He or she will represent our future customers experience with our product. Often we wonder, Well, when and how does a user persona appear in a U. X Project Timeline. The British Design Council has given us this beautiful concept of the double diamond, and the Double Diamond represents a schematic that shows the timeline of aux project indicating a research phase which is our first diamond and the design phase in the research phase, we basically gather all the data that we need to prepare for our design fees, and it is usually in the latter part of our research phase that we build our user persona. And if you want to read more about the double diamond, I have written an article on medium that gives you detailed insights into this concept. Some of you might wonder. Well, how do we gather all this data for our user per sooner. The research that is being done to get into a design face for a project involves the whole team, and it can be quite comprehensive. And some tools did we use to gather research data or tools like Google questionnaires or user interviews. Up next, Let's get started with creating our persona. 3. Attributes & Stats: Okay, let's get started with creating our persona. What we will be doing is going from a very general concept of what the user persona is to have fully fleshed out and beautifully designed template. In our case study, it is going to be Emma and she is an Etsy seller. If you haven't done so already, please download the template. Now it is provided for you on the class page and there's a link there and you can download this illustrator template. So when we start with building a persona, so how do we start building our content? Well, we start with what we know in our case study. We know that our persona is an Etsy vendor. Then we look at insides from research and we distilled a research and we find common threads when we're looking for during research are areas such as behaviors, goals, needs and pain points. So what are behaviors? Data gathered about user behaviors, mapped patterns and person develops when they're interacting with our product. And just remember, behaviors are very hard to change their kind of set in stone. When we query our users about their gold's girls can really vary and goes to find with a user striving for for their future goals are very important. Milestones been measuring a successful product interaction. Another area that recovered during research is finding out more about a user's needs, and the user's needs could be very broad or very specific. A user who tells us what they really need. They also tell us about the mechanisms they need to meet their goals and lastly and most importantly, are finding out about where our users have their pain points. Pain points provide key insights. They tell us what needs to happen in order to serve them or effectively. Pain points also represent ideas that have been tried, but they're possibly not working for some reason or another. So what I would like for you to do is go into your template and look at the behaviors gold needs and pain points areas, and each area has about four or five bullets, and I want you to edit them out and limit them to about 2 to 3 descriptors per category. So, as you can see, I've already done this in my template, and I'm going to give you a minute or so to do that on your template. Okay, Okay. Okay. All right. Now that we've edited our insides from our research categories to about two or three items or bullet points, we can move on and add some of our user personas. Personal stats, Stats is an abbreviation for statistics and stats relate to what we know from research about our user base. So let's craft some stats for our U. S. User persona on what we know from research is our users and etc. Vendor. They craft their own things. Their median age is about 25 to 50 years, and they're mostly urban professionals. So I'm making my user persona a woman I gave her an age of 32 years. I make her location to be Brooklyn. I'm making her profession to be fashion designer that ties back into your crafting their own thing. And her work is she's an owner of her own design studio, and one of her hobbies is biking. So go ahead and enter some stats for your persona. You can really be creative here because I want you to explore the opportunities of how we can add the's descriptors, and we're going to pause here for about 30 seconds before moving on. Okay? Okay. 4. Photography, Name, Quote: wear a really nice place now that we have some insights from research about their behavior , schools, needs and pain points. And we have to personal stats all set. And at this point, we can look for a photograph of our user because visualizing are re user will really help us when refer to develop out there person and their personality. So choose a photo. Of the three examples provided in the template, it could be any one of those when choosing a photo. Generally make sure that you only show one person because we want the photo to be representative of our persona. Choose a photo that is very friendly and make sure the photo doesn't look like stock art, but it shows authenticity, personality and style. So I've chosen this picture for my persona, and quickly I wanted to just touch upon how to find a good photo and what to look out for. So photos that we use in a project should always have a creative Commons license. Reach me instead of your basically authorized to use to photograph When you pull from someone's personal website, you should always ask the photographer Dior artist for their permission to use to photograph or lastly, you can also just take your own photo of a friend of yours and use your own style and creativity. Some really interesting sites that I'm using. Where I have had success in finding really nice photos is flicker, unspool ash and then decide called pixels and picks obey. But I'm sure there must be many, many other online websites that you can access and that, you may know, have really amazing photography. All right, now did we have the photo? He stats and the attributes were ready to give our personal and name. When we're naming our persona, make sure that the name reflects the mood of the person who were showing in the photograph . Make sure the name has a nice ring to it and make sure it's not too long. We want people see this user persona as someone they already know. So I'm calling my user persona Emma, and I'm giving her the the last name Wiley M. I. Wiley. So I put that here under the photo on. I've also entered it to the right of her photo, where we're going to write about her personal story. So go ahead and enter a name. You can also just copy Emma. This is fine for our project for our class project. So next up, we want to add a quote we want to give em. I quote, because adding quote, see your user persona just gives them a lot more personality. And you might wonder. Well, how do I choose a quote or where did they come from her? This is so difficult. Well, quotes come out of user interviews when you interview. Users still usually tell you a lot of things, and they often tell it in the form of quote. So while you're interviewing, take very good notes or record the interview so that you have a record of the quotes. And when choosing a quote, choose a quote that fits the mood and style of your user persona and keep the quote kind of shortened to sink. You don't want to go too long on a quote so we can go ahead and do that next up. We're going to spend a little time going over how to craft the narrative that tells our user. Per Souness story 5. Story, Online Activities & Tech: So next up we're crafting Emma Story, A story about our user persona, highlights their personality. We want a story to reflect who they are, emotionally and professionally. When we write this story, we pull insights from research into the narrative, and we want to bring out emotional aspect of her life. Now crafting a story takes time, and you should really give yourself that time because this instead area on our template where you can shine in your creativity and you can shine in your writing. And this is really where we can bring out her personality. I want to read what I've written about Emma. Uh, Emma has worked long and hard hours on her clothing brand. In addition to her design studio, she runs to online shops, one of thumb on, etc. And employs three part time shop assistants. She has built a loyal clientele and supplies a number of local shops with items from her clothing line. Now what I wanted to bring out in my description is that Emma is a person who is a very dedicated and she's very busy. She's competitive, but she's also very passionate about what she's doing, and this is what we want to do when we write about our person. So just remember it's about passion. It's about dedication, and we want to know who our users news Take the time that you need to write this paragraph is really worth it. So next up we have at the bottom right hand corner. We have these two categories called online activity and tech habits. Now this is some pretty straightforward data that we have from research, and this area gives us an opportunity to design or bring in some infographics and what I have done. I have brought in this style with thoughts where I'm indicating devices that they use often or platforms like let's say, etc. Platform is used very often by Ed by Emma, but you we can go ahead and just fill this out. So just remember building your user persona as a real person is about their story. So when you create their narrative, let your creativity shine through 6. Personality & Design: now. One last thing we want to do is we want to give him Emma even more personality by adding an adjective to her name. And I'm calling her entrepreneurial Emma because again, I want to show her personality that she is a very compassionate business person. And she was very entrepreneurial. And so for me, she is entrepreneurial em up. But give her any attributes that you would like to give her. So at this point, we have a template that looks quite good in terms of content. But this is the time where we can give our template some love for the design. And what I've done here is I've just organized my categories a little bit. I meet type a little bigger. I've introduced these really nice shapes around her story and her quote and just kind of like jast it up a little. Now when I would love for you to do is explore the design a little, because this is really the area where we can make it shine. And we can make this template really, really user friendly. And when our team is using it, we want to look it. We wanted to look very professional and very beautifully designed, so I can't wait to see your designs when you're done 7. Review & Examples: So let's review we've come a very long way. We've come from an overview of what a user persona is to our almost sort of finished design template. The only thing that we haven't done at the upper right corner. I've introduced some hash stocks. Sometimes designers introduced that because a person might have a very busy INSTAGRAM account and they actually may have their own hashtag. And it's kind of interesting to add that to your template, what we've learned, we've learned the meaning of behaviors, goals, needs and pain points. We learned how to write some personal stats that are called from research data. We learned how to find a really nice photograph. We've learned how to name our persona. And then we've also learned how to introduce a quote. We've learned how to write the story about our persona and then also finalising our online activity and tech habits section by adding a very cool infographic. And lastly, we've spent the time making our template look very beautifully designed and very professional looking. Let's review some other examples of beautifully designed user persona templates. So next steps keep designing your template and one year done, upload your persona to the gallery. I can't wait. Years is to see your designs. We are working off a template when you're ready to create your own user persona for your project, you will have a very, very different set of data and it will look differently.
