1. Introduction: Have you ever tried to make design like DES after seeing them on a t-shirt or any logo or any other place, you've got success? No, don't worry, I'm here for you. By the end of this class, you'll be able to make t-shirts, designs, logos, et cetera, which have text, characters, alphabets, or any other thing molded in a shape. So hello everyone, dagger here, I'm a graphics designer, animator, director, VFX, artists, post production editor and music producer. You can check out my work on my social handles and channel which are linked on my Skillshare profile. In this class, we will begin with the procedure of how we are going to make such designs. Then we will individually look at those steps. And in the end, I will share some tips and we will wind up this session with a lecture dedicated towards class project. So first of all, let me tell you that we will be using Adobe Illustrator in this session. And if you even don't know the basics, that's okay for you. As I will be making this session more biased towards beginner users. So without any further ado, let's get started. 2. Process Elaboration: Let's discuss how we are going to achieve our target. First of all, we will open Adobe Illustrator, any version. And then we'll have to make a grid. This grid can be made by many methods. I'll be sharing only two of them via we making this grid. Actually, you'll get this answer in next lectures or by the end of this lecture. But believe me, making grid is the most crucial and time taking process in this method. Next, we'll have to make a shape in which we have to mold our text and arrange that shape on our grid. And then we're happy with grid arrangement and size of shape, et cetera. Whether you type some letters using Text tool to get some reference. For better reference, we will write all the alphabet or letters individually and change their dimensions to match the shape. We are going to molder text n. When everything is looking good. We will use our magical tool, which is Live Paint Bucket Tool. By using this tool, we will be able to fill the spaces in grid with a solid color. And this was the reason I said that grid making is the most crucial part and this is why making perfect grid is the most important step. So now you have baseline knowledge of how we're going to do this. Let's just jump into Illustrator and see this practically. 3. Making Pattern: So we are going towards our first step and design making process. And that is making a patron, which is going to help us a lot in using our magical tool. We will call this patron as grid. We actually have to make up veteran in which a square is divided through two perpendiculars end to diagnose, which will result in formation of a triangles, which will make our square. Now you can even have it divided by one perpendicular and two diagonals, resulting in formation of a scare with six triangles. It depends upon you. This will give our magical tool more liberty to fill small pieces of scared and made design mode attractive. So first of all, make a new Illustrator file by clicking on Create New button. Then select pixels and make height and weight same. I will be using 1080 by 1080. Then just click Create and you will have your document. Now you have your artboard and center layers on your right and Toolbar on your left. If you create a document and you do not get interface like mine, you can go here and change to Essentials. And if it is already essentials, still interfaces and same as mine, you can click on Reset Essentials. I explained this earlier because if you are a beginner and use the interface different from your mentor, you will panic that the mentor is using a different software or different version of software and I can't follow the steps, so just come down. There's nothing different. The only differences arrangement of some panels. So that doesn't make much difference. So now we have to make our patron. We can make this using any method. There are a lot of methods, but I will be showing only two of them. In the first method, we will draw the patron on whole artboard at once using the line tool, and then we will duplicate it to fill the whole art board. In the second method, we will make individual unit of patron, which is a scare, divided into six or eight pieces. Then we will duplicate the scalar multiple times to fill whole artboard. And wave will be good to go. Important thing to note as the grid size. As fewer number of characters require larger size to cred, while more number of character require smaller sized cred. And due to this, I recommend using the second method of grid mating. But first, let's discuss both of them one-by-one. For the first method of making bread. First of all, PICC line tool. Go to any corner of art board. Click and hold, left-click off your mouse and drag mouse to its opposite corner in the same xs with the button still on hold to make the line straight easy for yourself. Hold shift from keyboard. Now hold Alt on your keyboard With Selection Tool selected and hold the left mouse button, you will see your cursor changes. So just leave that leg when you have cracked the line, a bit of a in the same xs and you will see your line gets duplicated. So this is how you duplicate something in Adobe Illustrator. Now to reduce work, voicemail repeat the same process, but instead of dragging and dropping again and again, we will use a shortcut key to repeat process, which is control plus D. When this shortcut key is pressed after a particular function in Adobe Illustrator, previous function is repeated on new parameters, keeping devious parameters as standard. So just hold Control plus d and you will see the line will become duplicated again and again on the same difference, which you duplicated manually. So fill the whole artboard with lines by pressing Control plus T or just press onetime and hold it and it will duplicate automatically. Then again, take Line Segment tool and draw a line perpendicular to previous one. Covering the whole length of Artboard. Use shift for accurate lines. Then duplicate the line holding Alt on keyboard and dragging using mouse. Hold Control D to duplicate previous action and fill whole artboard with these lines. Now we have some small boxes on whole artboard. We have to divide these now. So just make one diagonal line holding shift for perfect angle, then it just duplicate using old and duplicate previous action after that, do the same for second diagonal and you will have your grid. So this was the first method related to making of a patron, which we are calling grid right now. Now comes the second method. This method is the most reliable method in my opinion. And I personally use this method because this method provides us full control over the grid. And with full control, I mean, I can change size of grid anytime by just deleting everything except of one base unit, changing its dimension. Again, duplicating which overall takes less than two minutes. Another reason via recommend this method is proportions. This method is fully based on facts and figures due to which we have both at dimensions of grid spread all over the artboard, which helps in making design more decorated and perfect. So first of all, grab rectangle tool and single click on Artboard, a pop-up will appear, which will ask for the dimensions. Now here is the rule. We are going to make a unit piece for good. And we have to decide whether we are going to make it equal to end part, one hundred, ten hundred part or 20th, 200 or 2000 part of the total dimensions of drug means that if your artboard is 1080 by 1080, you can go for the size 10.8 by 10.8 or 20.6 by 20.6 out of 10, eight by 10 or 20, 6 by 2 or 6. It's just simple mathematics. You can divide 1080 by a number, or you can multiply 10.8 Veda number and put the same number in height and weight. I'm going back 10.8 by 10.8. Then they exam tool or press Z from keyboard and left-click to zoom in and you can see you're scared properly. Then grab Line Tool and go to either of the corners and veins, venules, cursor shows anger. At this point is your line is overlapping with the anchor point of scale, which means cursor is perfectly on the corner at this point. Use left mouse click hold and drag to opposite corner to create a straight diagonal line. Hold shift for a perfectly straight line. And repeat this process for second diagonal. And we will have our base year divided into four pieces. Next step is to divide it into six or eight pieces by adding a vertical or horizontal line are both. For this. Again, grab Line Tool and go to intersection of diagonals and move cursor upwards or downwards. And you will see a line appears automatically, which shows that your cursor is actually perfectly perpendicular. So move to either extreme when line is visible and drag a line from top to bottom holding Shift button. Here if you see some problem that you deal the line perfectly but line most automatically away from center. Then go to Appearance panel with nothing selected, and turn snap to pixel and grid buttons off. You can see them on the bottom of the appearance panel. Now your unit has six parts. You can even make aid by drawing another line with the same method. But I will be going with the sixth part. Now we have completed our base unit. First of all, zoom out by holding Alt and clicking with Zoom Tool selected. Then go to this button in front of layer to select everything in layer and move this whole unit scared to a corner. Then duplicate it by holding Alt and drag the duplicate just above the previous one so that the lines of both lie on the same spot. Use shift for perfection. Then use Control plus due to favor one side of cardboard completely with these boxes. Then select whole line, duplicate it and again, controlling need to fill the whole art board. And congratulations. Now you have your own grid and this is perfect. Now the question is how to chain dimensions of grid even with maintain proportions. So for that, delete everything except one unit cube, then select everything, go to Appearance panel change vector, unhide. But keep proportions in mind, which are 10.8 by 10.8. Now if you want to change these, multiply these by some factor, may be 234, 10, 20, etc, anything. And plug that value, but don't add ide ending value. Then again, select everything manager's position, obligate, repeat the process. Blackboard, and this is how you change your grid size. Now you have your grid. So let's move to next step. 4. Adding Reference: So now we have our own credit. You can use any size declared. And I've already explained how to change size of the grid. I'm using 43.2 by 43.2 size for every single individual box. Now we're going to add a references for making design. Here we will use two references. First step friends will be the shape which we are going to make part of the grid. This reference may or may not be the part of actual design. It's totally up to you. Second reference will be the texture friends, if we are going to use alphabets or numbers in your design. So for first reference, use any of the shape tool, rectangle, ellipse, star polygon tool, any do. You can even use pen tool and make custom figure for the design. So just use left-click from your mouse and make any shape using tools in the same layer as grid. You can hold shift for a perfect size if using to make it in separate layer after locking that grade. So grid lines don't get attached to your reference figure. And when you have completed the shape, you can drag that from top layer to the grid layer and you will be fine. One important thing here is try to stay close to grid lines in case of every shape. Now let's talk about reference number two. For this one, use type tool and type alphabets you want. But before typing, log the grid layer and type on a new layer. And after that, reduce opacity. To reduce opacity, go to Properties and then decrease opacity. Now you have two options here. You can either write VN alphabet in one time, and then just arrange every alphabet independently, change its size, changes shape, et cetera, Do whatever you wanna do. And the second option is write everything in one time and then use touch-type tool. If you don't find it in Type Tool column, then drag from that extended toolbar. To use this tool, simply select the tool, click on the alphabet and then start dragging it to some spark separately. Use upper right corner to change height of the alphabet individually and lower right corner to change its fit. Now manage all of the characters in a VAE, Giovanni them to look like in final design. This step is important. Venture out a big net because you're not expert in an army of letters. But if you are experienced, you can simply skip second reference and then just began drying. Venue have done modifying your text reference. You can already see your design and draw a farm. So let's make it build by going to next step. 5. Use of Magical Tool: Now we are near to complete our design. So let's use our magical tool, which is Live Paint Bucket Tool, selected from tools, or drop it in your toolbar from your extended tool menu. Now, what Live Paint Bucket Tool does is that it fails all of the closed shapes with the selected color. And that is why we made a grid. For example, see if I use a filter and then select whole grid layer and start pressing left-click. I can easily fill color in these kind of shapes. Now you can do two things. You can either make any design on grid for getting your reference. Like I'm doing this. You can go for typography and juicy texture fence and write some alphabet. When going, we strive to stay close and you may change sides of grid to match with characters I mentioned. Start filling and write text completely ends, you are done. So just fell on your reference. You may turn that off and on to be accurate and do finishing in the end. 6. Finalizing Design: Now comes the time then we are going to finalize our design for this. First of all, complete your fill requirements. If you are not happy with the alphabets lend our borders or anything, then you can change them anytime. When you are happy with your final design. First of all, delete text reference layer because we do not want that. Then decide whether you want reference shape or not. If you want that shape and final design, then move that to a separate layer by dragging it to a new layer. A device just select everything in the layer and remove stroke color and the grid will vanish and you'll be left with your design only. If you will not move your reference Shape Layer, two different layer will vanish to because she was just a stroke. Now let's talk about making variance using the design. First of all, it's Scholar, you can simply select the whole layer and change its fill, color and color design will change. You can make hundreds of color variance of the design, but by just using a single click. Next thing is background. So you may drop the shape layer below the live paint layer and add some filtering. For instance, black or white for red and white. Black and black fail for white. You can do anything. If you want multicolored alphabets, then change color fulfilled, choose Live Paint Bucket Tool, select the layer again and change the gut out of every alphabet one by one by tracing like your grade before. After there's just explode your designs and you are done. 7. Tips: This lecture is going to be about tips regarding creating designs, which we learned in this session. So tip number one is that if you're gonna make a lot of designs like DES, Savior grid as a template for this, save your file when you have completed that Greg with the name plate, then Save As with another name and you will be on your new file. So when you want to create another design, just again turn on template.ai and again, save as with another name and keep creating with less effort. Actually. Tip number 2 is regarding base unit upgrade. First of all, plan which you are going to write and how you are going to write. For example, if you've arrived, many characters may be five or six letters. I recommend using small sized base unit, so you have enough room for drawing characters. And if you are writing two or three, use large boxes. I would personally recommend large boxes. Next step is regarding reference. So for reference, I would recommend you all to first upon make reference shaped lines as close to credit lines as you can. Because this will help avoiding small spaces in-between designs, which is kinda unprofessional I think. And next thing is, which I already explained in the lecture that using of extra friends and trying to write alphabet separately and increasing or decreasing their height and weight according to the need. And then begin using live paint bucket tool. And believe me, this is going to help you save a lot of time and give them most professional look to your project. One more tip regarding export as when you export, tried to export more than one designs. And for this, I mean, for instance, you may design black and then export it skeletal variance using the method I am showing you right now. If it's unique, you can have black, white, and some of your favorite colors as variance. If it's di or tri colored, you can search Google for best color combination and get the nice color palettes and you can use that in your design. So these are some tips for you to increase efficiency in your workflow and professionalism in your work. 8. Class Project: So now you have learned how to write alphabets and characters in a particular shape. And you are ready to make some beautiful designs for yourself and clients. So for confirmation that you enjoyed this class and learn something healthy, I would like to give you all an assignment. Use the methodology I taught and make a design maybe three alphabets encircle or two letters in oval or anything you like. Everything is totally up to you. Use your creativity and make a design and upload on Skillshare as your class project.
