1. An Introduction to the Course: Hello there. My name is David James Alert, and I would like to welcome you to this skill share class, which takes a look at how to make a living from your writing class is actually the first in the right to teacher Siri's here on skill share, which shows self published authors how to repurpose content they have already written and turn it into courses to sell online. And in this particular class you will learn about the changing landscape of the self publishing industry, the importance of repurpose ing your content, why you should become a right to teacher and how to sell your online courses through your existing evil. So go ahead and enrolled in my class and I look forward to seeing you on the inside. 2. The Changing Landscape of Self-publishing: A report by Enders Analysis earlier this year, which was published by the bookseller, found that no less than 40 of the 100 top selling e books on amazon dot com in March 2000 and 16 was self published. That really is an incredible statistic, and there is no doubt that self publishing continues to become a more and more attractive option for writers. And while it is true that there has never been a better time to be a self published author , this also means that when it comes to selling your books, the competition is growing every day. Even established daughters are choosing self publishing over traditional book deals as they realize that they can potentially earn more money and benefit from the freedom that self publishing offers when it comes to both the pricing and the promotion of their books. The good news is that the quality of books on the reputation of self published authors has never been better. The bad news, however, is the fact that it is now getting harder and harder to rank your books well in the likes of Amazon for any sustained period of time, at least, which means This is also getting harder to make a living from selling your books. However, What if I was to tell you that despite this, it has also never been easier to make a living from your writing and all that is necessary for you to achieve the level of success where you can potentially give up your day job is a simple change of mindset, a willingness to evolve from being a self published author toe what I call a writer teacher . In the next video, I will explain why restricting yourself the only creating e books is not a good strategy in the current climate and why I believe expanding your product range is the key to becoming a successful writer going forward. 3. Expanding Your Product Range: It has probably always been the case, and certainly in the past few years that in order to be a successful, self published author, you have to take on the role of a writer marketer. It is not enough to be an expert in your field and an excellent writer. You also need to be a competent marketer and know how to promote your books. What's more, the key to success has been the creation of an author Web site and the building of a mailing list, putting you in direct contact with your readers so that you get the necessary initial boost you need on Amazon whenever you launch a new book. And this still holds true. However, I believe that now what with the increasing competition from more and more writer marketers and even from traditionally published authors who are beginning to adopt the pricing and promotional strategies from the self publishing world, it is no longer enough to just be a self published author selling books. Not if you want to make sure that you are earning good money as an author on by good money I am talking about quit your day job type money. The kind of money that requires you to sell on awful lot of your books. Now, if you have been doing this for a number of years and was sensible enough to concentrate from the very beginning on the building of your mailing list and are now in direct contact with tens of thousands of your readers, then yes, of course, you will still be able to sell enough books to comfortably make a living. But what about those of you that only have a few 100 subscribers on your list? All those of you that are just starting out as a self published author. If you are one of those people, then my advice to you is to throw away this mindset of being a writer of books and instead think of yourself as a writer of content content that can be repackaged in a number of different ways as e books and printed books, for sure, but also is blocked posts, audiobooks, podcasts, YouTube videos and, most importantly of all, as online classes and courses, for now is the time to become a right to teacher. And in the next two videos I'm going to explain exactly why you should become a right to teacher and how you can sell online classes and courses on the back of your books. 4. Why Become a Writer Teacher?: there are actually a number of reasons for becoming a right to teacher and learning how exactly to create classes and courses to sell online. Perhaps the most obvious one is the fact that there is a much higher revenue per sale than from selling your E books. A customer's perception of, say, a four hour course is completely different to an E book that contains, for all intents and purposes, the exact same content. The E book is likely to sell anywhere from 99 cents to $2. 99 whereas the course, depending on the content, may sell anywhere from $30 to a few $100. And while a customer may think twice about buying a self published E book for $3 given the number of free and 99 cents books on the market, they're far more likely to see the value in a $30 course, especially if it has been reduced from a retail price of, say, $200. Do the Maths 100. Sales of a $30 course would take 1000 sales of a $3 e book and in my own experience, selling a $30 courses quite often the easiest sale and the fact that courses have a much higher revenue per sale than E books leads on to the fact that courses are far more attractive to affiliate partners. How many affiliate partners have ever sold your books for you? I doubt many have, if any, but because of the higher mark up selling courses is far more attractive to an affiliate partner, where they are likely to make between 10 to $15 selling your $30 course for you. On average, I make about 20 to 25% of my income each month from other people directly selling my courses, which provides a stable income and which means less promotional effort on my own behalf. The bulk of my earnings from selling courses, though perhaps as much as 60 to 70% of my income comes from selling my ports is through online marketplaces such as Ouda Me and Skill Share. These are basically the online course equivalent off Amazon, but and here is another important reason for becoming a writer teacher. It is a far less saturated market than the e book market has become. Online education is still a fledgling industry, it does not become mainstream. Not yet, anyway. There are rumors flying around that the likes of Amazon and Microsoft are hovering around and may well come up with marketplaces of their own for online courses at some point in the future, which would be a very exciting development indeed, but only if you have already established yourself as a writer teacher by then. So now is the perfect time to make your mark, given all of the above. Why is it, then? More, more writers aren't becoming teachers and increasing the revenue from their writing. The answer is quite simple, and it is yet another reason why you should become a writer teacher. There is a perceived hime barrier to entry. When it comes to teaching online, a writer may be willing to format and edit their books themselves and even create a book cover. But appearing on camera and creating audio and video is perhaps a step too far. Writers are very often in traverse, and the thought of talking in front of a camera is perhaps something that is less than appealing to them. Then there are those technical barriers that a writer perceives for creating professional audio and video. This perceived barrier to entry really is a very good thing indeed for US writer teachers as it is keeping the competition at bay. But the truth is, things are not nearly as scary or as difficult as many authors perceived them to be. In a future class, I will show you exactly how you are able to turn your book into an online course by writing the script, recording the audio, creating the video and then putting it all together in the postproduction face. But suffice to say that the learning curve, which access a wonderful barrier to entry for many of your fellow self published authors, really isn't as because you might think. And what's more, the same skills that you will learn when creating an online course can also be employed to create audio books. To sell on audible or give away is a very attractive lead. Mac in it to create both audio and video podcasts to help establish you as an expert in your field and finally to create promotional videos for your books, your online classes and to promote you yourself. The truth is, online education is an untapped industry with amazing potential and do as a writer are in a better position to take advantage of this growing market than most. You are already an expert in your field, and you have already written a book. That means you are well on the way to writing a script for your course, and you have the expertise, experience and authority to teach others. Now all you need is the technical know how and the confidence and determination to put this into practice. So if you are convinced and are willing to take the plunge and become a writer teacher, what does this mean for your career selling books? If online classes are potentially so much more profitable, is there really any point going to the trouble of writing, editing, publishing and promoting your E books anymore? Well, yes, of course there is. And in the next video, I will explain three strategies for selling your online courses on building up your business on the back of your books, which will give you a huge advantage over other teachers who are considering selling their courses online. 5. 3 Strategies to Sell Your Courses Through Your Books: As a writer teacher, you're not only in a better position to make money online than a self published author would be, but you are perhaps also in a better position than a teacher who is looking to make money selling online courses. The fact that you already know how to write format, publish and promote e books online gives you a huge advantage over those Teachers have made the very sensible decision toe earn extra money by imparting their knowledge through online courses. Yes, they are likely to have more experience teaching than you do and possibly will feel more it ease in front of the camera to begin with. But you, as a writer teacher, will have a ready made promotional structure in place to drive sales to your courses. Quite apart from the fact that the sales you make from your courses will supplement your teaching income, your books are also one of the best ways to sell your courses and also build up your overall business. And there are three main strategies that I recommend for using your books to promote your online courses. The first is to increase the value of your E book. You could include a free coupon code for one of your courses in the back matter of your book, which is only accessible once the reader purchases your book. Of course, you should talk about the free course in the books front matter, the books description on it sells page and perhaps even on the book's cover. Your potential readers are far more likely to cough up three or $4 for an e book if they know that the book comes with a free coupon for a premium online course. Suddenly your competitors books for 99 cents won't appear so attractive. You may only want to give away a small course, but it must be one of extremely high quality. So is to give your current readers and idea of the quality they should expect from you in future courses. My second strategy is to promote your online classes and courses with a free E book. As you know, you can sell a lot more books when they are free, So this is a good promotional strategy to get as many eyes on your discounted courses possible. You may even want to consider an extra tactic whereby you include a link with the discounted coupon code for your course within the front matter off your free book. That way, potential readers air able to click through to the promotional offer from within Amazon's look inside feature without even having to download the book. Remember, your promotional offer really has to be something that grabs the reader's attention, perhaps as much as 90% off the retail price of the course. Yes, the reader is getting an incredible bargain, but you are earning revenue and, more importantly, converting a reader into a student who may well go on to buy other of your courses in the future. It is well known that the most important long term strategy for any online entrepreneur whether you are a self published author, a software developer or an affiliate marketer, is to build and engaged the list of buyers who you are in regular direct contact with. This is equally true for the right to teacher, And so my final strategy is to use your books to increase the sign up rate to your mailing list. Now, rather than giving away a pdf blueprint or even a free book, you are able to give away. A high quality premium course is your leak magnet, and you will see your sign up break go through the roof. A za result. You can initially launched your book as a paid book using the free promotion days of KDP Select to get extra sales of the book during the five day promotion before eventually pricing the book itself for free. Once the three month stint in KDP Select has come to an end again, you should place the link to your leave magnet in the front matter of your book so that a purchase of the book is not actually necessary for any savvy potential readers who are able to access the offer. The Amazon's look inside feature. 6. Your Class Project: Hello there, thistles. Just a quick video toe. Thank you for taking this class. I hope you enjoyed it. It would also be great if you would complete the class project, which is quite simply to state whether or not you plan to repurpose content that you have already written into an online course. And if you want, you can tell your fellow students about the book in question. That is entirely up to you. Thanks again for completing the class. And I hope to see you in one of my other classes very soon.
