About This Class

This is the second episode of The Watercolor Painting Series. The series are designed the way that each class can stand alone and is complete on its own, and has three main ingredients: art theory, color theory and a trending topic.

In this class as for art theory, we are going to practice painting basic geometric shapes again, learn about the geometry in a diamond, and practice keeping and even whitespace border so that our neighbouring surfaces don't bleed to each other (useful to learn for the impatient ones!).

In color theory we will create a color wheel, explore the pigment of our colors and try out several variations. We will learn about the primary, secondary and tertiary colors and how to mix them. We will learn about the color harmonies, name all 6 and explore the analogous color scheme.

Our trending topic is DIAMONDS:)

The class is ideal for very beginners, but it also can be challenging for advanced students.

1. Introduction: if I would need to decide what is the easiest thing to pay into the water colors, I would say that basic geometric shapes you don't need to over think them just saying them over and over again and you can build up so amazing. Thanks with them, for example of Diamond. Hello, I'm Dr whether on this is the watercolor painting Siri's My name is Alexander Gabbar. I'm a professional art teacher. So please just find the group watercolor painting for beginners on you can find an amazing community there. There are very enthusiastic beginners, and you can just get an extra moderation. So these Siris are just signed away that each class can stand alone and it's complete on its own. On each of the classes have three ingredients are theory cow theory on the trending topic. As for our theory, we are going to learn about white space on geometry. For color theory, we are going to make a color wheel on duh, learn about color harmonies on. We are going to create an analogous color palette on or trending topic is diamonds. So if you feel the creative energy and you're ready to create, let's dive into the class. 2. The Color Wheel: de color wheel. In the last episode, we explore the monochrome color palette and named the free primary colors red, yellow and blue. Well, there are different theories about the primary colors. Some say that science, magenta and yellow artichoke primaries. But what just a traditional in theory with these free colors red, yellow and boo Wiccan makes all the other colors. You need to remember, however, that there are different rats, yellows and blues. Some don't work together and make a money effect, or the pigments even push each other away on don't mix. This is why it is good to make more variations off color wheels, mainly if you have lots of colors. For example, when I opened my Windsor and use a health and set, I noticed that they included £2 from ultra Marine route Salazar in crimson and yellow Auker, which automatically said to me that they are their primaries. I made a color wheel with them, which looks great. However, I don't really love the greens and purples it gave me. Let's just talk about to causally the more most of the times the colors you having your tubes or help ins are not pure. Take blue, for example. Some blue has a bit of Fred or yellow in it to create different types of blues. If the blue has more for yellow in it, it will not makes nicely with red and won't. He was a nice purple. The reason is that complementary colors neutralize each other and make money effect. The complementary color off purple is yellow, so if there are yellow pigments in our blue or in a red, they will kick the purple in the you know, and also, if we have, for example, the red in or yellow. If it makes it with blue, the green will be messy. At Satya Ra, this is why you need to look for the purest colors. So I moved on and created several variations off the color wheel, and it was so much fun I explored my palate. So let's just try it. Make your own color wheel, too, so take out your pains and just ride with your own blue, red and yellow. Regardless, its name. Try to choose the purest colors, so the purest blue purists, yellow and the purest to read. I have pre drone a circle and made sure that there is a place for 12 colors. So do you want it each quarter to free even parts I'm going to implement Well, you two So the strength off the color So basically I will add more water to the painters I'm painting to see the possibilities within dat color. Let's start with the primaries. Plays them on even distances around color wheel All right, so now makes the red with a yellow on the wall Uh, we got the orange What we makes red and blue We got the purple on with mixing blue and yellow week at the green So when we mix red with orange we get the red orange or vermillion When we mix orange and yellow we get orange, yellow or amber If they mix yellow and green it makes us the shoe tress or lime green. Then green and blue creates us blue, green or teal And the mixture of blue and purple makes us a nice while it Lastly, when we makes purple with red, we get kind of a magenta. These aren't the ter t erry colors. Awesome. It is good to know our paint. I recommend you to do this exercise. Make several color wins. If you have more paints, it will make you more confident. When it comes to colors, you will loan which color works together. Which variations make you the purest purple or nice? A steel colors? It'll big with reference in the future, which you will be able to use on your journey. 3. Color Harmonies: color harmonies. There's a frequent question I get. Why do we need to create a color wheel on? Why do we need to make all the other colors from those free? Well, the answer is, you don't need to, however, big understand to make the mistake off using too many colors in their paintings. But if they use all those colors from the same primaries, the pigments stay the same, so there will be a color harmony within the whole painting. See, I painted to extreme example paintings. The first painting is down with original authoring crimson ultra marine blue on yellow ocher. Though their mixture makes dull colors, the overall painting simply looks good. The colors are similar, and it creates a harmony. However, in this one I chose my colors randomly from my Windsor in Utah, health and set. So a random green, a random yellow on random Brad. Some colors are destructing. For example, these green it just doesn't fit the painting. This doesn't mean you always need to do all the colors from the same free By time you will know what colors work together, mainly if you make your own color wheels. For example, in this painting, I decided to paint the Holt airball from the same pigments. So I took my cat me red and cadmium yellow and mixed them around to get the orange yellow on the orange as I used a canyon yellow. I have learned that it works well with the towel a blue. So I used them to make my greens and teal. However, I know now that cadmium red I'm terribly doesn't work well. So I chose a different red for mixing purples. I tried Rose mother because it is kind of a magenta, so it has blue pigment in it. This purples also came out of It s a traitor's, but I like them. I also have a simpler room which I otherwise beginners to follow. Don't use more than free colors within a painting, mainly if you are not making them from the same primaries. There are several types of color. Khamenei's complementary colors aren't opposites to each other on the color wheel, they complement each other. So when they appear on a painting, they make each other pope. When they meeks, they d saturate each other and they are used sometimes for shadows. The split complementary colors. Isa worry ation off the complementary colors. In addition to the base color, it uses the two neighbouring colors off its complement. This color harmony has the same strong visual contrast as the complementary, but has last tension. There is analogous color harmony when we use colors that they're next to each other on the color wheel. This is the case which we will discuss in disc loss. Then there are try. It's which means free colors evenly spaced on the color wheel, direct, angular and square, which we'll discuss in a different class. Let's see what a now long is color harmony is about. 4. Analogous colors: analogous colors, so analogous colors. As I already said, our does next to each other on the color wheel. Let's look at his lost landscape I created. I used the Taliban and cadmium yellow to make the teal green and the Citrus and used them all around the painting. Can you see that this whole painting is also in harmony? This means I used five colors within the painting that are next to each other. But usually, when we are talking about analogous color harmony, there are free colors used that are next to each other, and I otherwise beginners to stick at first with the range off one primary on a secondary color. By this, I mean, for example, to use red and orange to make the red. Arrange and use these free in the painting. Or use orange and yellow to makes the orange yellow and use days free, etcetera. These are called analogous color schemes. There are 12 combinations altogether, but now, for the beginner level, we are going to take just a six with the one primary and one secondary and make a simple exercise with them. Where were simply makes one primary color and one secondary color to get a 30 Rick Uhlir and used these free as an analogous color harmony. So choose one color to dominate, a second to support and the third as an accent. For example. In his landscape painting, I have shown you the dominant colors, the blue. The supporting color is green, and the accent is a yellow. Let's say that the dominant color has to have 60% the supportive 30% on the extent, 10% off usage in a painting. Now let's move on to the exercise. 5. Analogous Harmony Exercise: analogous color harmony exercise now draw six squares and the white and by free lines, crossing on the same point so that you end up with six triangles or rectangles in them. In the first square, we're going to use the red and the orange and create a mixture off the red. Arrange so choose any red and any orange from your pains and create a mixture of red orange on your palate. Keeping in mind the color dominance, Pain free triangles with the red. We are going to leave an even whitespace border so that your neighboring surfaces don't bleed to each other. It is all right if they do, but let's just keep things with meat. Okay, so paint to with their rather orange on the lost triangle with a pure orange. To give it an accent, you can almost tell you the juicy fruits can't shoot full of the same process in the other squares, so choose a primary and a secondary color. Make their mixture on the palate and pain free to one shapes with these colors. How you like them. The second square is dedicated to orange on a yellow mixture. You can choose any orange and any yellow from a pallet. Just play around in the third. We will use the yellow to green and the ship tress in the fort. The green, the blue on the teal, then blue, purple and blue purple in the fifth, then purple red on the purple red mixture in the last square. Amazing. You now have dried out six analogous color harmonies on your own. We're going to use this new knowledge and the final project. 6. Useful Resources: useful resources. Let's just stop a little here. There is a color calculator online toe, a provided by decisions college type in color calculator into Google, and they should be the first result in the search on this site. You can enter a color, Let's say this one and choose from the six color harmonies, the complementary monochrome analogous split, complementary Try attic and patriotic. This tool can be a great help when you prepare your artworks color scheme in it once, and it is also just a good fun to play around. You can also switch between R Y B and the RGB Kala molds. There is another website I would recommend to you if you are interested in your pigments a little bit. Was it Web exhibits dot orc slash pigments where you can read about their origins. History on examples, off use 7. Drawing the Diamond: All right. So I just draw a diamond. The first thing I'm going to do is that I draw a 10 centimeters long line and mark, it's me. The point at five centimeters, and now I'm going to draw an eight centimeters long line on. Put the two centimeters to this marker point underst draw eight centimeters down. Okay, this, uh, this at the top is going to be the six centimeters. So I'm going to put the phrase and two meters up here on just connect I these sides to here . All right, so now we have the shape of the diamond, but the most important thing is ordered inside off it. So now let's let's do the the top for it. So I'm going to connect this dot to this center like this. Andi, like this, and what I'm going to do now is to erase disc line. I can't find my All right. Here it is. Okay, so I'm going to erase this line. What I'm going to do now is to find this point here on this point here on connect thes to and is. So I have no to excess hair, and I'm going to connect this. A similar angle like this? Yeah. And here. Okay, these triangles down here, I'm going to d white to two parts. All you can do that with Fuller. Okay, on this wants to, but no to the center, but a little bit to the site. OK, so little bit to the side. Now we have up upper part on Let's move to the down apart. So I'm going to find Oh, let's say going to need this kind of fake this'd eight centimeters. So I'm going to go for the sticks. So fine. Six centimeters here and at this point, draw a light line and the wide this line approximately, uh, the center on connect these dots. What is up? Reports like this. Okay, now you can erase this line, even the middle line, because we will not use it. Okay. And now what I'm going to dio is to, um connect this point to displace part through this This to this So this to this one. And also here Onda decide we are going to go from this point to this level. But to the etch. Okay, So like this on the same here. So here. Oh, Yes. Cool. Now find the center off this line approximately and also here. You can do this with a ruler, but it doesn't really matter. I'm joined these two here. Well, here is the diamond. You can do the same. Ah, with different sizes. But I find this size to be big enough to to ah, look good, but small enough not to lose my patience. White painting Get 8. Painting the Diamond: Okay, so I just paint a diamond. I'm going to use my detail brush to paint because it is Ah, a little bit small, but I really including the resource is ah, a little bit bigger of sizing so that you campaigned his bicker. Okay, um, as we were talking about D analogous color dominance. Um, this shape has 24 shapes together. I'm going to use my teal as the dominant color. I'm going to paint toe 12 shapes with the teal on. I'm going to use the CEP green for my supporting color on simple blue tala blue for my accents. So it's start. I'm going to fast forward the process, so that is not too boring for you. Okay, Try to keep an even distance from the sites off the shapes so that the surfaces don't bleed into each other. And at the end of having to raise the the outlines and it is going to look like we're good , try to paint the shapes that are not neighboring so that you have variety within it. No, I'm going to move to my step green, and now I'm going to use the Saleh Blue. Okay. Amazing. I can't wait to see your variation. Softest diamond 9. The Class Project: the class project for clothes projects. You need to choose to our free analogous, callous draw and paint a diamond on. And if you wish, you can create more variations, and I would be really happy to see them. 10. Final Thoughts: final thoughts. So we are here again in the conclusion in this class we have learned so much, let's just do a little recap. We learned what is a color wheel, how to use it. And we learned a little bit about the relationship between the colors. In it, we explored color harmonies. We tried out some analogous couple. It's practice to keep white space on practice. The painting off geometric shapes. Again, we learned that the geometry in the diamond and applied or new knowledge on color theory in the creation process. This is fun, wasn't it?
