1. 1.0 - introduction to the course: hi and welcome to the first of 31 actor back videos for my Advent calendar for December 2016. If you're watching these in the in the future, then I know that I started a crazy idea of making a Advent calendar of videos. Normally, it's like they want to 25 December. I decided to go through till the 31st. I have 31 courses mapped out. I've just published about 52 courses in the last six months to skill share, and this is the first of 31 videos today. We're looking at the little Black book off video optimization, So need that video in a certain format. Welcome to the Vulcan mind meld. Kodak's different compression technology is different software and a whole bunch of things to do with video. So why do we have so many formats? And what the heck are Kodak's anyway? We'll be talking about software and hardware to turn you into a video. Will Dingle conversion Ninja html five Video in the cloud is your current flavor of the moment. Those 100 courses that I want before the end of the year. I'm trying to get 200 courses will see how I do enjoy the course. 2. 1.1 - what is a codec: all right, then. So a Kodak encodes a data stream or a signal for transmission and storage, possibly in encrypted form. And the decoder function reverses the encoding for playback or editing. So for a while now, we've had different ways of encapsulating content into what's called containers, and those containers come in different formats. From MP four. Hates to 64 is the code for the compression, and there's a variety of different elements for a video file. Now, don't be scared. You don't need to learn all of these things. You don't need to learn all about Kodak's incon encoders, what you will need to know a little bit. Terms of what formats a video is in. What container, it said. What's the playback? Is it hates to 64 compression or hatred to 65 Why does it playback on one device and not another? So there's a few things to get you by to hack your way through it, and hopefully we'll get those in this course to don't worry too much. There is hundreds, maybe thousands, of different codex for different applications globally, there are Kodak's for data, So PK zip still images, so JP gift. PNG Audio, MP three, A C and video. So SinoPac MP to hate to six Wal V P. A. They're all different Codex and compressions that you'll come across that come from different manufacturers, a different applications, different software, different hardware. Most roads Right now, however, lead to hates to 64 and hopes to 65 which is even better at compression but needs a lot more hardware to decompress it because it packs it down and you need better decoding hardware for think. The latest iPhone does hate to 65 decompression, and there's a market increase in quality. But the file sizes half them we're seeing that gradually every few years is a new compression new algorithm technology, which can compress, but there's no visible quality difference. We'll start to see a lot mawr What's called lossless compression technologies out there now where you can look at an image and it looks exact through the same as the previous one. Before compression 3. 1.2 - awesome tools for video conversion: All right, then. So your Swiss Army knife? Do you like the little PNG there? Somebody give this way for open source. This is a collection off a small collection of tools that I use on the where to do my video encoding. My favorite at the moment is cloud convert dot com. It is a free service, but I have a pro account on their I've actually got some credits on that system to encode different stuff. It's a great cloud based Swiss Army digital knife. You want to convert something to something it could do. Audio video pictures, cabinets, three D rendering it can pretty much convert a hell of a lot of stuff. I won't say everything, but it's got a hell of a lot of stuff on there to convert. And it's a really fluid, nice looking you. I you can get there encoded output sent to your dropbox. Get an email notification you can upload, let it do its job in the background and get a push notification when it's finished. The next one I want to tell you about is click converted DOT cc allows you to download videos by that your l doesn't do it for everything. But I've took quite a lot of stuff at it from YouTube video websites that you would normally find video hosted on. You can put in the URL and download that clip. Just recently, they stopped allowing anything with the music soundtrack on there. But you will find other download sites that allow you to download videos. You can even do one click converted, downloaded video and just removed the audio streams of There's a piece of music that you found, which is a white label, or it's open source that you really, really, really like. And it's on YouTube. You can put in the URL and most of these things on a rip the audio layer only. So you have an MP three or a A C far for you to use on your media player. Another one that I use quite a lot in this is open Source is a free piece of software. It's by squared five dot com. It's MPEG stream clip. It is a great job of converting between different formats. This is a local piece of software that you download from the Internet to your machine. Get this for PC or Mac, and it does a fabulous job. It's one of those ones that if I can't get something converted in another program, I jump into this and it's kind of saved me. I think with these things you have to have us a series of different applications. I did a course about being a digital citizen that a few days ago that having backup, I think this is important to have backups to the task that you normally the only machine might have a problem with. Cloud cover being down or click Convert Not been out to grab it. Having two or three options to build. Convert your files, I think is a good practice tohave. If you're looking to encode someone your existing files from Hates to 6426265 so that you reduce the space that you need on your hard drive, then handbrake dot fr handbrake has been around for a long time. It's open source free. You can take some of your hopes to 64 files. You can even que them up overnight if you've got, you know, hundreds of them and it will go through and re encode them in hate to 65 Good quality, but half the fire sites if you really low on this base and you have a hard drive full of files. If you have the technology to decode it, make sure you can Decode is in playback. H 265 file because they are quite intensive and decompression because it does heavy compression on the file. Like I just said, if you have hundreds off those files, these are a great selection of tools. If you're just getting into video conversion encoding for the first time, 4. 1.3 - html5 is cloud video of choice: all right, so let's quickly talk about HTML five. The haste about five specifications introduced the video element for the purpose of playing video in the early days of the Internet. I say the early days, maybe 45 years ago, most of us were using the flash player plug in, which was a plug in, that you put inside your browser to be able to play back video watch Former NATIVELY. Your browser didn't allow playback video, and it was only until the hate mail five specifications came along that browsers natively played back Web video Web video is in a special format. You may have to make sure that you've got encoded for hasty Mile five video. YouTube changed to Hatem Al five video from Flash in early 2000 and 50. I mean, they literally converted everything on their site into flash video will get into the reason for that. Mainly it was easier for accessibility purposes to be able to have blind people. Obviously with the sheer amount of products that apple of shit over the last 5 10 years in terms of mobile phones, they didn't support flash. So we needed to move toward a specifications like XML file to be able to deliver video on that IOS platform 5. 1.4 - how can i future proof myself?: all right, then. So future proofing. How can you free future proof yourself? This is a very difficult question on not one that I can answer easy because it's changing all time, I would say right now html. Five hates to 64 hates to 65 of the most popular encoding formats today until hardware decoders come in. Then 265 will take over from page 26 for the next couple of years. Only because the file size will be smaller. I think we'll start moving towards faster Encoding riel time in coding. Smaller file sizes on demand video that start straightaway as soon as content starts toe. Get like that soon as the Internet connections are so low late and see that it's real time we click on a button, it's loaded. Then it will be a game changer because most people are used to just clicking a button on the remote control to turn over a TV channel. And I think once the Internet starts acting like TV channel instant, it will just revolutionized on demand Video VR is going to require a lot of CPU and GPU horsepower to give us a merciful resolution environments expect encoding and Codex onboard Kay and eight K and all the other higher resolution formats to bring along with a new encoding formats. I'm pretty sure that working, maybe on Hope, hates to 66 or whatever. The next iteration of 265 years and constantly those algorithms are being refined made better chips inside of handsets are being put into do specialised hardware decoding on the fly. The best test I found for being future proof is when a new format comes to your video editor. So if you using final cut Pro X or maybe Sony Vegas, or whatever your video approach, whatever piece of videos of where that you're using, look out for the new formats that your software supports. Because if those new software supports of being put into your video editors, you know that they're starting to sell a lot of that product because they're asking providers of video software for support of their products in coding. Engines come and go depending on public take mobile hardware is the area toe watch. Like I said earlier on the iPhone six s, and I think the seven, actually as hardware to 65 decoding built in at a hardware level so that content pretty much could be decompressed on the fly in real time, so you don't notice any degradation. Also, them's file sizes are smaller, so they get to you faster. So basically, we're just improving the whole video playback experience. 6. 1.5 - take the project!: five step project. Go to your project in the bar below. Put an awesome project title. Tell me about how you use video in your day to day. If your skill share user, what do you use fuel settings? Click Save and you're done. 7. 1.6 - the roundup: all right then. So the roundup hope this explained and de mystified a little bit. Some of the things about encoding decoding containers and all that stuff. Always check with the platform. Your uploading to read their frequently asked questions. They will have a container of formats, a bit rate that you will need to encode your videos to get the best out of that platform. And if you work to their specifications, you won't have any problems with encoding it. Uploading. You may have problems on other services when you work outside of those parameters, get the bit rate and the Kodak that they suggest. Feel free to ask me any questions about video encoding.
