About This Class

This course is a direct follow up from the fundamentals of piano playing pt 1, and can be watched after finishing this course. In this class you'll be learning to read notes from the f clef (bass clef) and the g clef (treble clef). This class can also be watched as a stand alone class for those who want to learn to read notes.

1. Introduction: Hi. My name is El Fuego Boulais, and I'm a Dutch concert pianist and teacher. In this course, I'll be teaching you how to results. I'll be teaching you how to read the notes of the FDA, and I'll be teaching you how to read. The notes of the Jetta also demonstrate several songs that I've made for you in order to practice everything that you've learned in this course Now I would recommend that you watch my previous course, the fundamentals of piano playing Part one, as I will be using some things that I've told him that course This course is also suitable for anybody who's interested in reading notes. Lesson 1: Notes: this lesson is about notes now, in our previous course, in less number two musical terms, we discussed that these five lines that you see here is called a staff. Knowing piano playing. You always see to staffs connected by a bracket. All the staffs are within the notes. We already saw that in our previous course, the fundamentals part one. But we're going to explore that a little further now, so the notes are written on the staff, and a note could be either on the line like this. We're in between the lines like this and not follow each other up. So note that is on the line. If you go one up, it will always be in between the line. So that means that on the piano this note, it's followed immediately by that no. So after a note on the line always comes a note in between the lines and so on to imagine if you have one note here on the line and the next load on the second line, that means that there's one note in between here, so they always follow each other that a note on the line is always followed by a note between the line and note between the line is always followed by a note on the line. Also, if you see notes going up on the staff, it means also that they will go up on the piano so absolutely corresponds. It's all very logical. So notes are written in different cliffs. Because we have such a large amount of notes, you can imagine that five lines is not really enough for all those notes. That's why in the previous course fundamentals Part one, we discussed that there were two different cliffs on the upper staff is written a G cliff, and on the lower staff is reason an F cliff. The G clef usually covers an old approximately from the central. See though the sea in the middle upwards and the F clef usually covers an olds are all the center central, see so the sea in the middle and the lower half of the piano. Left. Now this is a central see Don't worry, you will be learning that very soon. But I'm telling you know, this is a central see, which means that when I see this, I can only play the central see which is the sea in the absolute middle of the piano in the center of the piano. So we have any other see higher lower doesn't matter. It's wrong. The specific notes on specific places of the staff are also related to specific keys on the piano. So the next upcoming lesson is the f clef 3. Lesson 2: The F Clef: this lesson is about the F clef. So the first notes that we're going to learn are the notes of the F clef off the left hand off the lower system. Okay, so the F clef is named in this way because it shows you where the f is, and not just any f the f directly below the central. See so as your noticing. I'm talking about the central. See a lot, because that's kind of a reference point that we use, especially at the start, because you can always find this scene in the center, you know, So it's really easy just to kind of go from there. So the central see is the sea right in the middle and which your if you're sitting straight in front of the piano, is just the sea right in front of you. So the F clef starts on the F below this central see, So the first F that you find below the central see is the F that the F clef is showing. So, like I said, why do you have two different cliffs? It's because the two different cliff start at two different points of the piano. Since we have five lines. They're fits the most commonly used notes for that area of the piano. That's why we have two different areas, because we have lower half have the upper half. That's why we have two different cliffs. Okay, so the F clef shows the F, which is a very convenient starting off points. From now on, you can always read any note because you can simply count it out from the F. That being said, please try as quickly as possible to learn by heart. These notes don't keep on counting them out. Really learned them by heart. Imagine if you have to spell out every single letter that's gonna take you a long time to read a book. The same with notes. If you have to keep on counting it out from the F every time, it's gonna take you a long time to learn any peace. Maybe not in the very beginning, when the song's air still simple. But later on, when there's really interesting pieces you want to learn, you're gonna feel sorry that you didn't immediately learn the north, so please take my advice, learn them by heart and learn them really well. as easy as you can read the alphabet. That is how easy you should be able to read notes. Okay, so we're going to see here. The F left shows the F. So that means here on the line here where it starts, you usually have a little curry thing here, where it starts, starts on the fourth line from down. Yes. 1234 And there's always one dot above that line and wondered under that line. So to make it even more obvious, this is the offline. So any noted, you're gonna draw here on this fourth line on it? Right on it. You see there, that is the F the first f that you see below the central. See, you just learned your first note. Okay, So if you go up up from this note onwards and like I said in video number one notes, the notes always go in the order of on an in between. So the next note when you go up or down would be in between. So let's go up for now. Let's go up. Who going to be? It's going to be followed because it's on the line by a note that is in between and take a second now to think which note I just drew here for you. Yeah. So if it's the next note on the staff is going to be the next note going up. So going up is to the right. You could almost remember this by thinking high notes are on the right side of the piano. You know, it sounds really high. Loans are on the low side of the piano, so going up higher would always be to the right, just in case you get confused. Um, so we're going up. We're going to the right. If you go to the right, the next note is going to be a G. So that's the second knows. You just learned already. You go anymore up. We're going to be on top of the again. The next note is going to be not in between but on on the line now room to be on top of the upper line. And that is deep after energy were still going up. Stewart, still going to write to the right is going to be the A No. Now comes a little bit different because you can imagine there are some. No. Instead, we use that are actually not only line not fitting on on or in between these five lines. So we're gonna come there now, real soon. The next note should be again in between, you see, because we just have the A, which is on the line and the next snowed. Here we go in between, except there's no line six anymore. So this is just lying on top of their that is the be. So we have the f, the G to A and the B. So, as you see, we start on the line in between the line on the line and in between the lines, even though our six line obviously is missing. Okay, so now we're going to go one further because we're going to hit the central. See, Asher, this so one further is going to be trying a bit more off. And now it's just right there in the air. And now we can't see is just note actually in between or on the line. That's important to see. Otherwise, we can't know what notice. If you are above, we're below the staff. You're going to have to put a little stripe, which is like an elongation of the staff to show. Is this note in between or on top of the line? So we're going to stay here, Remember, RB was in between our line, even though the six line was not there, it was in between. You see, the A was on top of the line. Anderson is in between. Here we go. So that means that our next note R C is going to be on top of the line again. That's why we have to put a line right there. Just going through to show this is on the line. And that is the central. See? Okay, so just like we went up now from the F, we can also go down. And don't worry, you don't have to learn them by heart all at once. Just remember, the f clef shows the f the little I thought It always starts on the F line, which is the fourth line from down. And if you forget about that, it makes it even more. LV is by putting, always having one dot above and wondered below the fourth line, which is even more obviously making a deep F line. So here we go. We have the f over here on the fourth line. There we go. So now instead of up, we're going to go down. So we're going to go down on the piano to the left, where the lower notes are and we're also going to go down all our stuff. No, remember, doesn't matter what direction you're going to if you want to draw the next note on the keyboard. You're going to have to. Ah, since we started with a note on the line, we're going to have to drop a note in between the line here. So in between this line is the one further is going to be third line city. You know, with the notes that we first learned But the most commonly used notes here I'm drawing all for you are the notes that are in on the staff. So those air the first notice that you're going to want to really get to know really well cases, this final note here it's a G. And so you go any lower right now, I just only show you you don't have to learn this already. But just the principal stays is seem so. This one is again in between just we don't have the lower line anymore. We have one of this five lines of the staff. So you get any lower than that, and you're going to have to draw a line through to show that it is actually on the line. You get any lower than that, you're going to have to draw a line under to show this one is in between the line again, and so don't wear will not be learning these in this course was just too. Demonstrates the idea off, going above or below the staff. Okay, that's it for now. The next lesson we're going to explore the G clef. 4. Lesson 3: The G Clef: in this lesson, we will learn the north of the cliff. So just as the f clef showed the F line, you probably already guessed that the G clef is going to show that G. And just as the F Clough is actually showing on the F below the central see, the G craft is actually showing us the G above the central. See, the point of the G clef is that you start. It starts a little below the G line and the Jelen goes straight through its curls. You see, over here the curl right here. You see that the G line is going right through this. So that is how you can recognize that it shows the G it's the G above the central. See the first G that you find above Central. See? Okay, so we're gonna draw our G right over here. Here we go. The next note will have to be in between the lines. So and we also go exactly one up on the keyboard. So here is going to be our A on the keyboard as well is going to be the A. Then we have the next note again, they changed constantly. So on top of the line in between, on top in between. So after the A is in between those lines, the next one here, right here. The B is going to be on top of the line again on the third line. And as we're getting hire on, the staff were also getting higher on the keyboard. And remember, this is not any be over here. This is the first. Be that we're finding above the central. See, to remember, kind of to have the central see as your reference point at the beginning for everything. Over here. We're going in between again. There we go. This is to see the first see on top of the central, See? Yes. So it's gonna be higher than the central see, And we have On top of the line again, is the d getting pretty high already on the keyboards going in between again That's the going on top again. That's the f going in between again. Even though we ran out off lines here, you see, we ran out of lines. We're going in between again with a G and us. If we start, we want to go higher. Now we're going to have to put the line again, Remember? Just like we did in our previous video to show. Hey, this notice on the line, This is the way we already got pretty high on the piano. As you can see, we got pretty high already. So don't don't try to learn all the notes at once, Remember, I'm just showing you the principal. Okay? So besides, up we can also go down. But like, you see, the G was pretty low, actually, on the staff so we could go really long way up also, because, of course, with our right hand, we do tend to use a lot of higher notes. That was very useful. So we don't have that long way to go down, actually, but from the G, we can go down. Since we started the G on the line, we have to We have to draw the F in between the lines. So here we go the G again. You can check that out because the middle curl here started a little bit all the second line and then the G line. The second line goes exactly in the middle of this girl. That's how you can always check it if it's necessary. So this f it's in between the line. Their next note here, this is going to be on top of the line again. Onda we do That's hanging right below there. So that is actually in between the lines. But it's, you know, we ran out off lines here. We don't have a six line, so just hanging under there and then we have the central see over here that is the central see So they see in the middle. And because we ran out of lines here from the staff, we have to put this line in between to show Hey, this note is on the line. Okay, so now you can see what I mean when I say there are actually two different languages. They're two different cliffs. Because if we take this G right here, RG, which is the G above the Central. See here there it ISS stg. If you look at the f clef this exact same North, let's say exact same note is actually a B and that is this be over here. It's a totally different no. So they are totally different script that your going to have to learn, but to just remember to do it in steps I would recommend five notes at a time. So five notes of the right hand of the G clef and five notes off the left hand of the F left. And I actually would recommend there's this app that I like. I recommended usually to my to the kids that I teach, but I don't know. I think it would be fun for adults as well. To be honest, um, point of learning notes is really to have a lot of repetition and not on Lee. You need to be able to read it fast, so anybody at the end can, you know, read it pretty slow because they kind of counted out in the kind of are guessing. But that's not the point. You have to read it like you're reading letters when I show you this letter over here, You're not going to say like, ah, will. I think that's a no. You just don't even have to think about it. And that's how you have to get the notes. So in this case, I think this might be a good idea. I would say I mean, check it out. You have, um, a Daymo off free demo version. So if you're saying this is something that I like, you can always buy it after that. So the demo section is just one level, and if you have any trouble using it or you need any help, just let me know in the comments, and I'll help you out because you have some different settings, so you can't. You know you can put it settings on just these five notes, but you can put them also lower and higher. You can switch cliffs, you can switch speeds. You could do all kinds of things. OK, that's it for now. In the next lesson, I'm going to give you a demonstration of two songs, one for the left hand and one for the right hand, applying everything we've learned about notes and reading notes in this course 5. Demonstration Left Hand: in this lesson, I'm going to give you a demonstration of playing a song while reading notes first for the left hand only, and then for the right hand only. We're going to start with Ode to Joy for the Left Hand on Lee, and you can find the PdF file in the project section. So if you want, you can print it out and practice along together with me. First, we're going to start looking at a few things that we've learned in the fundamentals of piano playing Part one. We're going to look at the time signature if you confined at the very beginning of the peace. Those are the two numbers on top of each other, and the upper number tells us how Maney beach there are in a bar. In this case, we have four beats. In this song, we see two different kinds of note lengths. We see the quarter note, which is one beat the quarter notes and we see the half note, which is to meets. And then finally we look at the fingering. We see that at the first note is written a three and nothing else. That means that in general, we should put our third finger on the first normative. We're going to look at that in a minute, and all the fingers after that are going to follow just to the next key. So you're going to put all the fingers right next to each other and any note that is on the finger that you find it, you're going to play it with that finger. Um, just in a in a few minutes, when we look at the right hand, we're going to see some changes in fingering. But this I start a little easy for you guys. This song is pretty straightforward. You start on the third finger, and that is where you keep your hand throughout the song. Okay, so now we are going to read the notes, and now I understand. And I get that it's a little attempting to just look at the first note. And then instead of reading the notes to just see if it goes up and down and just kind of, you know, start on the right known, and then just to stop thinking or stop reading the notes. But please, I ask of you, I want you first to pause the video now and to go through every single note and read it. Try to have read every note before you continue. Okay, I'm assuming that you have finished reading all of the notes and then in a nice, slow temple we're going to play everything through. So the first note that we see is an E No, I I hope you got that right. But if you didn't, don't worry is really not a problem. Just practice allowed in and you'll get it right. You can check that that it's an E just by remembering the f clef shows us the f the F was on the fourth line, and this know that we see here is between the third and the fourth line. So is one down from the F. If you go one down from the f, you get the e. Now, if you have trouble remembering what key comes before the f, maybe it is time to check out the previous course fundamentals of piano playing part one to just check out the lesson about the keys because you might need to do a little extra practice in recognizing the case. Okay, so the first note isn't e one down from the F. It's in between the third and the fourth line. And try immediately to kind of put that into your brain to ease between the third and fourth line. Try to absorb it so that you can recognize the notes faster. Also, remember that you can, uh, you could buy this app that I recommend to you to youth notes the students of mine that have gives the AP really, really improved much better with the reading notes because you know you can you canoe this app anywhere you can do it when you're traveling, you don't need a piano and, um and especially you can you can speed it up. So you can really start recognizing the notes fast as well as a lot of repetition, which is absolutely the key to a lot of things in music repetition. Still known as we figure out the first note first note is the e. And remember that the F clef showed us the f below the central see, So the is going to be one down from the same f. You know you're not gonna play Daddy. You're not gonna be money. It is the one and only here it can be only this e no other A on the piano is correct to play. When you see this note is dizzy, now we're going to start. It is written to third Finger, and it is reason for beats in a bar. So all of these notes or quarter notes they're going to be all the same speed. So if it's easier for you, don't speed up. They're going to be all the same speed. Okay, third finger on the the next note, I hope you've been trying to read the notes. The next note is the If, and the note after that is the G. So if I pay, the first bar is going to come already departed The melody Famous melody and the next bar. It's just a scale down. You see, they're going from in between the line two on the line in between the line on the line. And, as you know, those are the notes exactly following each other up when they switch. So from the G is down words every note downwards. But instead of just skipping right over that, try to really read every note individually we see the G here. Then we see the F ride on the fourth line E in between the third and fourth line like we just were seeing at the first bar. And then the D is on the third line. So try to make them all equal as they're all quarter. No. So we can try the first in the second bar together on already. Sounds very nice. That already. Sounds like a nice melody. The next is even one lower down than the last note of our previous bar, which was the D on the third line. This is see, followed by another. See, then going up to the D and E again. So, Dennis, how we're going to count it out. I'm going to play the next two bars for you Since I'll also show you how to count out the half note over here 12 And that is how you play that horrifically correct. I would encourage you to chick every bar like we're checking them now carefully. And you don't have to do that every single time you practice as long as you're practicing, reading the notes separately or with the app Ondas long as you're studying a lot of songs, you'll be OK. So do it once really carefully, once or twice really carefully read all the notes through and then just released kind of start practicing it. And, um so you're going to do that by yourself? You can pause the video again because I'm going to play. It wants through for you in a very nice slow practice temple. And after that, once in a performing temple, which will be the temple that you're you should strive to try to get to it, step by step by increasing your tempo in small steps. So first, now comes the practice temple. Once you've gone through the peace once or twice, really carefully reading all the notes, you can press, play and play along with me in the practice stuff. All right. Uh, okay. Remember to also try to count out loud to the 1234 like we've discussed in the previous course. So because part of developing a sense of rhythm part if it is doing it by ear. So if you play along with me and you hear how long I'm holding the half note, that's part of developing rhythm. But if you don't also try to feel the pulse yourself, you're lacking the other part off developing a sense of rhythm. Yeah, um, play along with this recording and once you're absolutely smooth and you had all your notes , correct, and you're doing rhythmically correct. And once you you don't make any mistakes anymore, it's time to start increasing your temple temple. Increasing should be done slowly, step by step. If you find yourself making again mistakes, take it a step down again. Increasing your temple is really good for your reactions, and reactions are, of course, very important, especially when we want to play fast parts or fast passages were just even fast pieces. Ah, yes, I do that step by step and I would say, Let's try to get it approximately to the temple that I'm about to play for you. It will be your performing temple that's your goal. To go towards that real slow way, be okay and remember to get it really smooth because all quarter notes are even so, trying to get it as even as possible approximately try to get towards this temple, but not at once. If you've if you've completed the slow practice with me together. If you are doing really well there, don't jump it once to this tempo that that's not a good strategy. Take it slow every day, a little faster and you'll get there. 6. Demonstration Right Hand: Okay, let's move on to our second song, which is going to be a right hand on Lee. So we're going to switch clef. So remember, now we're going to read in a difference. Chlef. I made again the ode to Joy just in the difference clef. So you'll be reading different notice, obviously starting a little higher on the piano. So remember, the G clef points us always to the G and not energy energy above the central. See, here's the central. See in points towards this g Okay. And the G is on the second line, as you can confirm, because it go through the curl of the G clef. Okay, So posit and, um go read the notes. Okay, So I'm assuming you've paused it, and you've already puzzled out all the notes. Or maybe you've already practiced so much that you can start to remember them and start reading them already. Anyway, whatever. Wherever you are, it's all good. Just breakfast, and you will get the hang of it. So the first note is a B. And if you have that right, Well done. If you didn't, that's still okay. You'll really get the hang of it with breakfast. It's okay to make mistakes. The G is all the second line, remember? So in between this G, because it's on the line is still note that it's between those lines. Between the second and third line is the A. And on the third line is the B and there is written or three. On top of that, be so the be it will be with the third finger. And remember, if you are doubting Malta fingering, you could always check the lesson on fingering off our previous course the fundamentals of piano playing part one. So our third finger is going to go on the B. And actually, I made this a little more complex for you. And even though the notes are moving up and you could just simply play the next notes on the piano trying to read them, trying to remember them. So we're having to bees next to each other in the first bar, and the second node goes. One up goes in between the lines, which means it is the next note on the piano, and it is the sea after that. On the fourth line is the D, and we see the same note. You see, they're both on the fourth line, also the G. Then it goes down again between the third and fourth line. Just like that, No same note to the sea, back down to the B on the third line, and then one more down, which goes in between, which is like I said at the beginning, it's the A between the second and third fine s. So the first two bars and we again have the four beats in a bar, which we can see right here the upper number of the time signature, and they're all quarter notes, so they're all wound to be equal. Remember to choose a tempo in which you can follow everything. So it's gonna be easy, and it's gonna be called okay. And it is the same. Melody is the same piece that I arranged for you just for the right hand. So it's gonna be easy to recognize if you're making a mistake, because then it won't sound like this same melody. Okay, Third bar, we see two G's on the second line. It's the G stategy, and then we see again the A B in the A, which we've already had here in the 1st 2 bars. Last a of that bar is 1/2 note, so it lasts two beats. I'm gonna play that 1st 4 bars for you. Okay, Now I'm going to play the next four bars for you, and after that, we're going to have a little bit of movement in the hand. I'm gonna start here. Okay? Now, this is a case in which you really need to be reading all your notes, which you always should be doing. But here you have a little proof because if you weren't paying any attention, you would simply here pay your third finger, which is at this moment on the B. And you'd be playing the wrong note because actually what his origen If you read, it's not the be because the bees on the third line, this is in between the second and the third line.
