About This Class

Welcome to another class in The Charcoal Series! I know most of us might want to draw fully rendered, beautiful portraits like the ones that we see on Instagram and YouTube, but sometimes we forget how much practice, time and effort it takes to master the fundamentals. In this class, we shall be learning how to put in the work of practising drawing faces with the right techniques.

We shall be focused on quickly sketching out expressive faces, limiting ourselves to about 5 - 15 minutes per face. It's all about cultivating the habit of sketching wherever we are, and in this way, eventually improving our drawing skills. We will also cover the theory of how to draw by using the Loomis Method.

In future classes, we shall tackle how to fully render male and female portraits using charcoal, but first, let us start with sketching them out. So join me in this class, and let's have fun!

Hi! My name is Chena, also known as LechenArt. I'm based in Nairobi, Kenya and I'd say I'm pretty much a jack-of-all-trades. My background is in Civil Engineering, but art has always been my passion.

I wouldn't say that I am a self-taught artist as I have learned so much through the years from various resources and hours of practice (with lots of mess-ups!). That's why I know that my students can be able to learn and improve on their art, no matter their age or background.

I love exploring different mediums and subjec... See full profile

1. Introduction: Hi, and welcome to this class. This is another class in the charcoal series L. We shall be tackling how to sketch faces. I know all of us want to learn, or rather most of us want to learn how to draw a detailed portraits of pieces. But sometimes it's difficult to know where to start. Remember having the same frustration once they started training a few years ago. What helped me was going around everywhere with my sketchbook and just catching pieces whenever I had any free time. I remember going to restaurants and using my lunch break at work just to sketch out pieces from Pinterest. And just by doing that, I learned how to drive pieces really quickly. And it wouldn't pressure myself to make details gutters every time, but limited maintain to about page ten minutes parties. So in this class, I'm going to teach you some of the fundamental skills when it comes to drink pieces. And you're going to try and cultivate the happy top sketching wherever we go. I hope you have fun in this class. 2. Materials and Class Project: So the materials that I usually use of passive Well is this hide charcoal pencil. I electron with Chaco and I'm sketching because they give me really strong portraits. You can also smudge it. And Nick shadows issued like this is an example of our drain that hey, Drew using Tracker. And also sometimes use may mechanical pencil or even my ordinary pencil. Symmetry over here. If you'd like, you can also use some smudging tools if you're using a chocolate such as auto Talia and I've been blending stump and brush. But since it is catching, you don't necessarily need to use them. You can just use strokes and lines to indicate where the shadows are. I use a brush and I'm using charcoal pencil. Now use a blending stump, the Tertullian, and I'm using a pencil to draw. You can also use an eraser any kind of way. So you have over here, I have needed an ESA and ASD curious. But then again, since we are focusing on how to sketch, I'd encourage you not to rely on your eraser when you're trying. If you kinda tall actually, never used to go with NAS. I never, I'd be DRE, address trade to dry on my mistakes and learn how to be confidantes. I'm putting down this trucks with a pencil. Sharpener in QC using AI traditional pencil. So as I said for this class are going to be learning how to sketch our species quickly. They normally use Pinterest and this is my Pinterest. Feed. Their sexual portraits, particularly conceived as a mucus, has seemed to have a lot of female faces. So for these class project, I'd encourage you to go on Pinterest, or if you would intend to use Pinterest. Another good website is pecks out on, even on Instagram where you can find dynamic faeces of people smiling and emotion. Just practice how to draw and use their references to draw something. Then try sunlit. And if at all you decide to post the images on Instagram, I'd actually encourage you to tag back to their friends, to the person who you drew. The good thing about using such websites is I'm paying a lot of different images and pieces where people have different expressions and address practice and practice and practice. Don't go further. Preteen images. Try to challenge yourself when it comes to the B France electrons. So again, for the classical going to sketch out your BFS, and I'd encourage you to follow along or even just select your own image. Refresh says from Pinterest original uptake that you'd like and sketch trade to give yourself by 215 minutes maximum puppies. As you're sketching and uncertain, you're gonna post the sketches on their class project section. I'd love to see what you come up with. 3. The Loomis Method: So now let's talk a little bit about the method that I use to draw. There's so many different methods that are used by different artists to drove pieces. But I usually use the Lewis method. There are many resources online as well as many books written by the author. But to explain this method even more in-depth. So we're just going to cover a few highlights on how to use it. So basically, you start out with Isacoff. I cannot draw a so-called saved my life. But as long as it kind of looks like a Sacco, just attach with that. Then you separate the socle into four quadrants by debiting it down in the center, horizontally and vertically. Then divide the bottom half into three parts. The first line from the top, whoever headline is. Then the middle line that he drew, the fast please be eyebrow line. And then the last line from the bottom of the circle will be where the bottom of the nose lies. Then by measuring the distance between the headline and the brown line. And of course also the distance between the eyebrow line and the bottom of the nose, they should be equal. And then we will just transpired this distance down from the bottom of the nose to find out where the bottom of the chin will be. This way you'll have three tabs that Mecca. Now of course, the outline of the face will not be exactly where the outer part of the circle is. Of course it'll be a little bit inside. Of course you have to remember that different phases have different ships. This suggests an idealized generalized outlays on how to draft piece. So of course you draw your headline at the top. If you said that the width of the face is a distance of five eyes. And I shall illustrate this a little bit better later on in this demonstration. And now when we went to find the location of the mouse, again, there will be a rule of time. And I know that there are so many pads that we're talking about. But you can't to this image as I'm drinks, which can people to tell. So by dividing the bottom part of the piece again into three, you'll find that the seam of the lip, the middle part of the lip, we lie at the past bad. That's where it will be. And then the beginning of the chin or otherwise just below the shadow that is below the bottom lip, that's where no, the other side will be. Kind of difficult to explain. Just by looking at what I am demonstrating. Rbi has a Drew. I think you can be both to see what I'm talking about. Next to find the location of the ears lie in the middle part of the piece. So the top of the years will lie somewhere close to the brow bone. And the bottom part of the ears will lie somewhere close to the bottom part of the chin, that lambda max, the bottom part of the chain. I'm demonstrating the genetic location of the ears, but this of course changes with the tilting of the beef. For example, if the faith is tilted toward the top of the ears rely a little bit above the line of the Brolin. And of course if the Teddy, but the top of the eyebrow line. But guess what I'm talking about here is just a Wender feces facing eyebrows. Along the brow line. The location of the eyes will be just a little bit below the eyebrows. Note that we pump the nose will help you to tell whether in a corner of the eye lies. If you draw a line directly from the outer nostril going straight up, it should line up with the inner corner of the eye. Sometimes they find it difficult to draw eyes that much and line up. But of course this comes with practice and with it looking at many references, you get use to it. Then. Now it also said that the outer corner of the mouth lines up with the pupil of the eye. If you dry lane street up from the outer corner of the mouth, going up to the eye. You'll find out that it lines up with the pupil of the eye. Again, remember this is just a generalized outline on how to approach drink B says, now, remember I said that I will demonstrate what he meant by the width of the piece being five. So if I draw an imaginary line up from the eyes, going up, going up, and then just mocking it. Along with the width of the piece. It said, But the distance lambda 12345, like now that's five, which I wrote, which also now Mika, we've come to faith. And I'll attach more resources and links where you can learn more about this. And also other classes that had been covered by different teachers. Heroines kill Shia. 4. Location of Facial Features: Now we're going to talk about the features of the face. To do this, I'm going to look for a couple of addition says from Pinterest of human females pieces that we can use to see the piece mental different features on the base facility, you'll notice that the face kinda be divided into pods. The distance between the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin, and the bottom of the nose to the brow bone to add a browser. And then again from the browse to the headline, you'll see that those distances are pretty much close to equal. Another thing is that you will find that the corner of the mouth contains up to that the pupil of the eye and the edge of the nose lines out to the inner corner of the eye. Of course, there are many different fish ships. You'll find people who have the ground spaceships square over hot shapes. But in general, the shape of the face is click on egg shape. Kinda see me outlining over here. So if I am demonstrating the, you could call it the lack of the symmetry of the face. You'll see that the left side and the right side isn't the scene. And you'll find very few people having truly symmetrical faces. But that isn't how weakness, and that's the beauty. Now again, I'm going to demonstrate the same principles that I was talking on both writing down a foot or so, you'll see that the distance from the bottom of the chin to the bottom of the nose. If you move the lines and also test the distance between the bottom of the nose and the brown one. Finite, it's almost equal from the brow bone to the headline. It's almost equal. Again, tricking the lining up of the nose. You'll see that the edge of the nose lines up pretty much with the inner corner of the eye. Again, you can see the Altai knows a feasible Hafiz. It isn't exactly similar to the outline of the other elements b to a dream before. Now using this last image as an example. Again, you will see that, okay. 5. Selection of References : In this section, we're just going to be selecting Irish answers that are going to use in this class. And you can use the same reference as to sketch along with me. And we each link them all into class project section. So I like using also really interesting looking images. And not necessarily just a beautiful woman, because I really loved looking at interesting faeces. So you just see me selecting different and different images. Enter. You already know how to use Pinterest. You can select an image and underneath it you'll see other related images. I'm going to try and look for women of different ethnicities. I have to admit that my artwork is pretty biased towards drain back scanned and African black women because I think that's because that's my culture and African myself. So I'm Muslim, my artwork has to do with them. African remain Most of my sketches. But never try and limit yourself, especially when it comes to a point that you are a trendy skin tones. It's good to try and draw people have different skin tone so that you can also learn how to mix, reach deep colors and viola colors. It would to be varied. And now we have selected all of our images. In the next class, we are going to get started on our sketches. 6. First Sketch - Front View: So now we're going to get started on their fast sketch. And we're going to use the previous method that we talked about, the No Miss method. And remember the rule of fans and the placement of the features that we had talked about. So I'm going to start with a cycle. Then divide the Sackler into quarters and mock their location or the headline, that bottom of the nose and the Weather Channel B. Then I'm just going to start sketching the bribe eyebrows. The aim here is to, is to be loose and to be quick with our sketches. And try again down the features where we think they are. After they browse, I'm going to go into them during the nose. Alice down to the bottom of the nose and put in the last chills where I think they should be. Then after that I'm going to draw her lips. You can see that her lips are quite full. Jazz, quite a, quite a full upper lip. So it's kind of close to the bottom of the nose. This is why I said that their placement of different features will vary from face-to-face. Can somehow lips are really plump and quite big. African lips. So you can see the placement will be different compared to maybe other lips that we shall end up drain later on. After that I ended up during the chin and then a followed the contrast of half base. I could see that the shape of our faith is that she has quite worksheets going into the distinct CapEx best she has. You should look at the face also as having different shapes in it. So as you can just pull along to the shapes that you are seeing, the methoxy ha, ha ha, is, it's kinda of the rectangle. And on top of her head. Or they're trying to do is rest to capture their distinct personality of the subject. I almost always leave the eyes to be the last, because sometimes a duals are struggling with the placement of the eyes to see how face is kind of quite straight on into the camera. So the bottom normal height year's lineup, we observe bottom on the nose and the top of the ears line up with the brow bone. So I'm drawing the ear to the side. And to the side I'm sketching the shape of the teach us. Again on the other side, lining up the browse and a key part of this page and see the details. So I'm going to line up, despite having doubt. Sketching the neck, texts child squiggly lines to indicate the Fauci hat, which is a text child lost African. So you just block them. Then go to the sides of the face. 3d kind of look. Tribe the shadow. I'm just, I'm just drawing straight lines in one direction. And then two independent, the shadow most, I'm also going to go in the other direction. They put this shadow to adds the sides of the face. But you can see this skin is either going to be Tomasz I adored the shadows on the highlights on the face. Irobot makes it look so three-dimensional. So never be afraid to add in this shadows onto practice them just by using a pencil. Just to match the pencil strokes after, even just by using the lines, the indication of the 3D ness of the image can come across ten, just putting that Chido. And now we are done. I decided not to speed up this fast sketch so that you can see the total amount of time that it took me to complete this sketch from start to finish. Talking about 11 minutes to complete. 7. Second Sketch - Front View: And now I'm moving on to the second sketch. Again. For this one, I will not speed up the video to add to come see the entire process and the length of time that it takes me to draw. The head of our subject in this case seems to be tilted forward slightly. So you'll notice that we can see a lot more discount. And the distance between the bottom of the nose and the chin is going to be slightly smaller due to that. So again, we start out with a socle divided in half. Then are going to indicate the line for the hair line, as well as for the bottom of the laws are going to lie them slightly because the head of our subject is tilted, collide. Again, starting out by draining the eyebrows. For the eyebrows just grow small strokes to indicate the hes belief that almost eyebrows des pasa towards the inner corner of the eyebrows. Men, they become pika towards the end. You'll also notice that for women, unless you're wearing makeup, in most cases, the less hairy compared to those four meals of the same ethnicity. Steel, I do believe that eyebrows do make a feast because they show the expression and the feelings and emotions of a path line. I challenge you to 1D draw a portrait, but leave out the IPO. Absorbency Vedic transsexual motifs. Next we move on to Meno's study out of their nostrils. The shadows on the nose, the highlights that exists at the bottom of the nose, as well as the shadows dot to indicate the timing of the nodes at the bottom. These shadows can just being executed by slight shading using a pencil. Protista shading that indicates that there's trauma the top of the ellipse. Then moving on to drain the lips. You'll notice here that a motor that I'd put the line indicating the location of a chimp to be at two pi. So I ended up releasing it. But you don't really need an eraser when you catch on quickly and just walk around your mistake and leave the ln, They're not all of the pieces of work need to be completed and to be clean. Actually never really erase the construction lines that they have been made drawings. I don't mind the sketchy look of my sketches in my sketchbook. I see that bypass all of my sketchbook to be a place where I can learn and explore new ideas and having the Biao mistake, producing a complete piece of luck. Sketching out there, draw a line. Moving on to drawing the eyes. You'll notice that she doesn't have the decrease indicating the elite at the top. It can get called on one or lead. A defined this I kinda waste be pretty beautiful. To indicate the intensity of the eyes will put in the shadow that is caused by the top eyelid and the shadow at the corner of the eye. You notice just by not indicating the bottom part of the eye, we have actually brought out the essence. I. Moving on to the drain. Using long strokes. We indicates the location of the ears. But because of the slight tilt of the head, just keep on outlining the shape of the head. And then I just use small strokes in the direction that I got to see the haze grey highlight on the hair, or use less pressure with my pencil for that section can be a little bit lighter. Especially when I'm producing complete pieces. As much as the lock is repetitive, product. Just keep on rendering. Now I'm going to put in the shadow that is distinct shadows that says all the shadows that are passed by the light, depending on the direction of the light. The light seems to be coming. And the bottom part of bases in shadow by Tibet is I want to make three dimensional. I usually sketch out menos as nostril, indicating the shadow at the bottom of the nose. That indicates to the side. Sketch. 8. Third Sketch - Front View: Now moving on to the third sketch. I hope you're now getting into the groove of things and you're starting to understand the process. And I hope you're also enjoying just sketch and I long to put this one. I'll also not speed it up just so that you can still see the entire process. Again, our subjects head is slightly tilted part. You'll see that forehead and scalp can also be, it can also be seen quite a bit. Subject has lifted up these types of expressions. Down at the bottom, I've sketched out. Always remember that drain lips, the bottom lip is isn't truly SIDs line even the top of the lip. It's always I smooth transition of shades of shading is going to be especially important when you're now out of this surge of drinks sketches and actually drain detailed ph to drain. Now are going to be moving on to the drain. Their jaw line I've outlined on the base. So I just see a slight small strokes. Yeah. And do I admit that my sketches usually have a certain kind of style to them. You can meet your sketches as detailed, as sketchy as you'd like them to be. For example, a notice that I don't use rarely shading the pupil and the iris of my subjects. You don't have to do it their way out of doing. You can also still shaped their men. Photographs of Japan. That's good. And the kinds of sketches don't put too much pressure on yourself. Perfect replicas of your subject. Remember, these are sketches that were doing whenever you have any free time and we're sitting down watching TV or Netflix, or whenever you're having lunch. Whatever you'd like to learn how to draw. In the habitude just walk on them whenever we have any free time without putting any pressure on yourself. I'm just using my pen. 9. Fourth Sketch - 3/4 View: Now this sketch just follow along as I draw. Our subject here. Prophecies tilted slightly to the side. So the way that we can draw the face shall be slightly different. Abusing now my pencil from now on, just so that you can see that charcoal pencil and an ordinary pencil. So as usual, we start out with Osaka. Then we know Draw the line going down indicating where the noses to the side of that. The nodes are. Not just betty down the center of the sarcomere. And again, now we draw the line that indicates the brow bone lines and now we're drain with the shape of the face. Again, Ada start off by drawing the eyebrows. Going down with the shape of the hills. That bottom of the nose with land. Just as E2E rarely does. You can see I'm beat up the nostril to decide the right nostril till he draw that nostril. And again, I'll just draw the other eyebrow and put down the shading cause you can see the other side of the nose to the right of the face is a little bit in shadow. Now. Now going to draw the, I think you can notice now that you don't have to draw the face in a particular kind of like the reradiate in that with other drains, you can just flow with a drawing. And I just drain channel we that you feel comfortable drawing the other. I sometimes I find it also difficult myself tour, lineup the eyes. And if you do find out that you put them in their own position, don't be afraid to move them without an IT using an erisa. Ok. Again, we see that. And notice train to pull out the lead and my pencil. The dimensions that we've talked about before. The division of the faith into pad still applies in this case as much as we do not mock out whether headline should be and rather, what are the trends should be. Those dimensions distills do stand even in the case that the piece is tilted in that particular direction. I can already see that the jaw line and put it to be a little bit too low. So I shall just end up erasing it and lifting it to the position it's supposed to be. Just adding. 10. Fifth Sketch - 3/4 View: Speed them up slightly. Okay. Who? Bye. 11. Sixth Sketch - 3/4 View: Yeah. Okay. Okay. Okay. It's round. Let's see. 12. Final Detailed Sketch: See. And these specifications, six. Yeah. Okay. Solution. Suppose we wish to societal issues who no. 13. Final Thoughts: And now we've come to the end of the class. I know it's a bit of a different kind of class where we've just been sketching. But I believe by practicing the fundamentals and getting into the habit of just drain wherever you are and enjoying the process. This is how you end up in improving your WACC and event, finding your style, painting different styles and learning new things. So this is just fast class when it comes to the dream of our human portrait. So I hope that you've enjoyed it and that you learned something. And they also can't wait to see the sketches that you come up with in the class project section. To use the same reference images that I used. You can just pick up anything that stands out to you on Pinterest or an HMO websites that you use. And I hope that when they sketch books may be as full as this and even more. Never get tired of drawing. I never get disappointed are led down with what you see yourself drain. Sometimes as artists we, I really hadn't ourselves, but don't let that make you stop dreaming or lose the joy that you used to have when you use to draw a new Ayana. So I really hope that you enjoyed the class and I hope to see you in future classes.
