Project Description

I'd love to see this class's forum become a mini network for calligraphy entrepreneurs! Rather than share a project, I urge you to share an introduction to yourself and your business in the Community section.

Here are some question prompts to you may want to answer:

  • What's your name?
  • What state / country do you live in?
  • Do you have a website to share? Instagram account?
  • Straight or oblique?
  • What drove you to start your calligraphy business?
  • What is the most rewarding job/project you've ever done? What about the weirdest?
  • Do you have any business or technical questions for your peers?

Here are my answers:

  • I currently live in Athens, Greece, but lived in Los Angeles for ten years before this.
  • My website is mollysuberthorpe.com and my Instagram is @mollysuberthorpe.
  • Straight!!
  • Working at a design firm was a very rewarding, educational experience, but I knew early on that an office job (and twice-daily commute), combined with full-time computer work, just wasn't for me. I grew my calligraphy business on the side for a few years but it was getting my first book deal that finally pushed me to turn my side project into a full-time job. Since then I've crafted a lettering business that combines ink-on-paper calligraphy with computer-based design, creating a really healthy balance for me.
  • Launching calligrafile.com is among the most rewarding projects I've undertaken. It has surpassed my expectations. Getting messages from lettering artists around the world who find it an invaluable resource is such a great feeling.
  • I've gotten some pretty strange tattoo design requests over the years, but I'm not here to judge — tattoos always have personal meaning that the artist doesn't have to understand!
  • What's your go-to brand for colored ink? Mine, currently, is Ziller.

I look forward to meeting you!
