About This Class

This class continues my series on Keum Boo, an ancient Korean technique that literally translates as “attached gold”. In the first class, the Golden Butterfly Pendant class, I taught you how the technique works and kept the design fairly simple so that we could concentrate on process of attaching the gold - this time the design has a more complex, delicate cut out shape and a rolled texture, to prove to you just how thick and strong this layer of gold is!

Keum Boo bonds 24k gold and fine silver together, with no solder involved, just heat and pressure. It is a strong permanent bond, hundreds of times thicker than gold plating. As you can see from the class project a little gold goes a long way, making this a great way of  adding the richness of gold to your jewellery without breaking the bank.  It is a magical technique, and one that I never tire of teaching! I  love the look on my students’ faces when they realise that their gold  design has bonded beautifully onto the silver.

An understanding of the information in the first class in this series,  the Golden Butterfly Pendant class, is useful.

1. The Art of Keum Boo - Textured Flower Pendant: Hello. My name's giant Tinley I'm a jewelry designer and tutor from the south. Go to the UK on Welcome to the textured flower dependent class. This class is part of a Siris on combo, the technique that bonds 24 karat gold, two silver giving really, really beautiful designs. The aim of these trances is to get you confident in cutting and placing the gold and getting it to bond strongly impermanent li to silver and to show you different techniques that you can use with the gold in this particular class. The techniques I'm focusing on is showing you that you can cut beautifully intricate shapes very easily out of the gold on. Did you convey carefully make certain that they like just how you want them on the silver. I'm also going to show you that the gold is thick enough soft enough, strong enough to take on a beautiful texture when you send it through the rolling. If you haven't already done so than I do, recommend that you go back and watch the golden butterfly pendant. Because that goes into more technical detail guarding combo, including the different heat sources that you can choose from on also how the technique actually works. So if you already that's have a look of the equipment and materials that we're going to need to make pendant. 2. Textured Flower Pendant - materials: to make the textured flower pendant, we're going to need some silver sheet. So 24 karat gold foil suit off combo as a wire suitable for making a couple of bales to go on the back of dependent. I'm cutting quite a large design out of the gold, so I'm actually going to need to start with a whole sheet of the gold. But there will be quite a bit to left over enough to make several other projects. Likewise, I don't need to use all of a piece off selling silver sheet that you can see here. I'm starting with one millimeter thick selling silver sheets. Andi, I'm start without fitness because the pendant I'm gonna be making if I said is so. It's on the larger side, so it needs to be a little bit thick up for strengths on. Also, it's going to go through the rolling mill a couple of times, and that was thin it out so that I'm starting with the one millimeter. I'm probably going to end up closer to 1.9 millimeter thickness, a small piece of wire that you can see here and again. I won't need to use all of this is not 1.82 millimeter sterling silver around wire. No 0.8 up to one millimeter would be good for this project. I'm going to use this to make two bales to go to on the back dependent. Explain why I'm having to bales when we get to that section of the class. 3. Textured Flower Pendant - equipment: This is the majority of equipment that I'm going to need to make the textured flower pendant. There's also a large piece of equipment that doesn't fit into the shot. On day. I'm going to need a few pieces for my soldering kit as well, so I will show you those in a moment. The first stage of making a pendant is to cut a circle out of sterling silver sheet, so I'm going to use my discuss Attar. To do that, I'm going to be using my 28 2 millimeter diameter disk on dime going to hammer that through the sheet to cut circle out, using the old hammer that you can see here. Once the silver is ready for the combo process, I'm going to use my ultra light kill to heat everything up to the correct temperature. There are alternatives that you can use to an ultralight kill and do have a look at the golden butterfly pendant. If you want to find out about the different alternatives in more detail, I'm going to use the wooden coffee store to test the temperature of everything. But a wooden toothpick or cocktail stick would do the job just as well the gate burn. Isha is going to be used to help the gold to bond onto the silver on. Did theory reverse action? Tweeters are going to be there so I can handle the hot things safely. There's also a little partial water that I'm going to use to help me to pick the gold up with the gate, Burnish up! Once I finished bonding the gold to the silver, I'm going to put the pendant on the steel block. I always rest that on top of another cushion again. You don't need to use a still block to put the hot metal on top off. But you do need to put it on to a heatproof surface after it comes off the kill. I've got a rounded needle files I'm going to use to help me trim the excess gold off the edge off dependent the sharp You will be used to mark the silver cup of occasions to help me with the project. Now, the aim of this project is to prove to you that not only can you cut really beautifully intricate shapes out of the gold, but also that the gold is soft enough thick enough and strong enough to take a beautiful texture from the rolling mill. So I'm going to be using one of my rolling mill texture sheets through my lovely dust and rolling mill that you can see here. This is the small version off my watercolor ribbons pattern, but of course, you can use any material you like to go through the rolling mill off cut pieces of linen that you have a beautiful texture, as does lace and also water for the paper, even the cheapest once or the Colombo and the texting is done. I'm going to soldier a couple of bales onto the back, dependent on I'm going to use a round nose pliers on DTI wire cutters to help me from the bales. And then the very last thing before putting dependent on a chain is going to be giving it on lovely soft satin finish. And I'm going to use this little blue piece off very fine sanding pads. It might look a little bit worse for wear because it's had a lot of use, but believe me, it still has got a lot left in it. He's sending parents last a long time and one last piece of equipments I couldn't quite fit into shot is this lovely big paper craft punch. It cuts out a really, really beautiful flower, quite an intricate shape. I have chosen this shape for the project not only because I really like it, but also to show you that with care, it is possible to cut a delicate, intricate shape out of the gold foil and to apply it to the silver. As you will have noticed from the photo. So far, I'm not using the whole off the flower on my pendant. So do bear that in mind when you're looking at different Kraft paper punches, can you get a really beautiful effect from just using part of the shape? So let's have a look at the pieces from the soldering kit that we're going to need 4. Textured Flower Pendant - soldering equipment: this'll is the soldier equipment that I use for all of my smaller projects, such as earrings and sore pendants, Everything sitting on a couple of slate tiles, a heatproof surface to help protect my desk on my work sits on a couple of soldering bricks , soldering blocks while some heating it up. One of these soldering bricks is made of a softer material than the others. Because it's softer, it's picked up some dips and some cracks in it. It's being used over the years, and these could be very useful for supporting work that isn't completely flat. The charcoal block is there because I melt small piece of scrap on top of that on. Do they form nice of my balls as I am used to decorate my projects when I need to pick up my work or to support it whilst I'm soldering? I used reverse action tweezers that you can see here and have also got a pair on a stand through 1/3 hand, and it's there when I need 12 on extra hands to help me out. The blue handled stick is a soldier pick on and that I used to push soldier move it about to make sure it it's exactly what I wanted to be. Soldier usually comes in strips or sticks. Andi, I've got three different melting temperatures here that I using combination for different projects. The soldier gets cut into small pieces or Palin's you ting. The red handles snips as I keep those little pieces in the labeled boxes that you can see do. Make sure that you label your boxes because once a soldier is cut up, you won't be hard to tell which is which. Melting temperature. My curl over the ends off the sticks of solder so that I can tell which melting temperature they are, the more cold over they are, they're higher. The mounting temperature, bright yellow liquid is a flux. Solder won't actually flow out through the joining unless you use a flux with it. Andi the paintbrushes. What? I used to apply the flux to the joints in my work, so he was also available in a paste form, its ground up soldier that's already mixed with a flux, so you don't need a separate flux. In fact, if you were toe adds the yellow Fluxus, I've shown you it would stop this soldier pace from working properly. It's most commonly available in syringes with small tips that she can see here. You can also buy it in tubs and pots, just like with the traditional sticks or strips of soldier, so that paste is available in three different melting temperatures. Easy, medium and hard. I've just got easy and medium here. The easy is the one that's 268 degrees sent rate for amounting temperature. The medium is 730 degree centigrade. As you can tell, the easy solder paste is a favorite newer in the medium soldier paste. When you have a new syringe, it's best to pull back on the plunger after you finished using it. Otherwise, the soldier pace going to continue to snake out of the tip a little bit, and you don't want to waste it because this is actually the most expensive way of buying soldier. I like to use the solder paste on projects like chains on door, so hollow beads sometimes might use it on sucking rings if I'm in a bit of a hurry, because one of the advantages sort of place is that the soldier usually stays exactly where you want it to be. Unlike the sort of Italians that can jump off as you start to heat the metal up, small projects like hearings only need a small blowtorch, and I've got two different makes of those here. Both of them are easy to refill with the gas that comes in aerosol cans since the same type of gas butane gas that you use to refill cigarette lighter at the back of a picture, you can see a slow cooker that Scots a very mild acid solution, go to safety pickle in it. When you heat silver up, the surface becomes not darker and dirtier looking that some of the capo in the study silver reacting with the heat and auction flames before cause copper oxides on the safety pickle cleans that copper oxides up. Before you put your work in the safety pickle, it needs to be cooled down or quenched in a pot of water. Andi, you need to put your work in and out of the safety people with brass or plastic tweezers, not the stainless steel ones that I showed you before and thus, but definitely not least our have safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes look after 5. Textured Flower Pendant - cutting the disc: The first thing that I need to do is to cut a disc out of the one millimeter size of a sheet, although the finished pendant is oval with starting off with a circle onder than to use the rolling mill to stretch it out. If you don't have a rolling mill and you watch is a hammer instead and you definitely want your your pendant to be over, then you're going to have to sort out over instead. So I have used this lovely flower punch time using to cut just 1/2 off the flower out of that, a piece of orange papers you can see here because such is so about the amount that I want of flour to be on the on the dependent. Andi, I held it up against a few of the different punches. I'm not worried about the fact that Flower doesn't doesn't fully fit on the circle that way , because awesome could be stretching the circle out. What I looking for is the fact that visit was silver sitting on this side as well, where there will be a little bit of silver in the desk sitting this side as well. So This is a disc that is 25 millimeters in diameter, so it is the second. So the third largest on my no, I do apologize. It is 28 millimeters in diameter. So by being ever so slightly out of you, they're not. I'm not cutting too far into the center, making the best use off the sheet on just going to lubricate punch in there. I'm also going to move. Use this away, actually. So one thing I didn't do I should have done is put the shim over the other side so that the top of this cutter is not tooted over to one side. Yeah, so tight end up. Moving things out of the way is that's the sick of the sheet on the big disk. The more efforts you have to put in tow hammer the punch through to cut the disk. So if I had lots of things close by, they would be raffling. I want to make you an awful lot of noise. Uh, so here we go. Now, when it comes to edit Enas flats, I'm actually going to reduce that noise. Noise you just heard is actually not how it is in reality, I promise. So there's my nice this as you can see, I think go nice and closer made really good use of that piece of sheet. Now, as I said, I want to turn this oval. I went sent for the Rolling will turn Shoval, but it's just had a habit of force put on it. It's been work hardened. So next thing is I'm going to do is a Neil that this 6. Textured Flower Pendant - annealing: So this poor disc has become quite work hardened now, as it was cut out Andi to be out to be a sufficient as possible. As I send it through the Rolling Mills, stretch it to an oval, I want to soften the metal again. So the TT's as easy. And I said, That's an efficient just send through the rolling wheel. So to do that, I'm going to the Neil. It just going to put a a small Sharpie mark on the disk. What that does is to help me make sure that I don't heat the metal too far. Now, as you get more experience, there are better signs to watch out for to make sure that you were getting to be needing temperature but not taking it too far. One of the best signs of account for is the color of the metal. If it has got a deep red tinge to it, then you've reached the right temperature. But when you're still learning to a nearly, you're still going to watch out. But all these different changes in the metal and of course, making sure that you're concentrating on not melting your metal. It is sometimes nice to have a mark there as a bit of a backup black Sharpie ink just so happens to burn off at the right temperature. So when I've heated up the metal, Andi burnt off that mark. I know that I have got to the right temperature. However, please do be aware that the chemical makeup off Sharpie Ink Black Shopping Inc has started to change things. Changes being noticed in the United States First. Andi, I expect it's going to be rolled out. So what we are finding in the United States is that the flat, sharp ink isn't completely burning off. It's still leaving a little bit of a mark there. So do be aware. Do practices. Don't take the Sharpie markers Being the only sign to watch out for it is just a indicator . Carry out the kneeling first thing I need to dio just go close. It needs out the whole piece. You can see that Mom has disappeared now. There was also a nice bloom of ox ization here because, of course I'm working with sterling silver 7.5% copper in this sterling silver. So some of the corporate surface has reacted with heat on option in the flame to cause to form copper rock sites. So that is going to be quenched. The quenching actually has two purposes. I've got to clean off the cop rock sites on day. I'm going to do that in the safety picking that by mild acid solution. And I never, ever put anything hot directly in the acid. So the question called it off. The other important reason of the reason why I'm going to do it now off some carrying, talking to you can hear that, Siddle. I like that sizzle. Thanks. Even after all these years, I still like it. Um, the other reason why quenched it now is that quenching is part of the healing process. If you don't quench shit, then the atoms can slip back into a disorganized state again quenching it finishes the process. Those atoms and that silver is, are now in a nice organized state. Andi, it's ready where it will be ready after it's being pickled and cleaned up to work with again and go through the rolling well 7. Textured Flower Pendant - creating the oval: now that the disk has been cleaned up on the pickle on door, that dark ox ization has gone. I'm going to send it through the rollers in the rolling mill to stretch it out so it's no longer a circle and starts to become an oval. Andi. I'm just going to stretch it out so that more off the flower will fit onto onto the silver . So need to those roller to definitely to tighter. Can't even push that in. Certainly, too. First of all, usedto handle the wheel. It's up at the top here, slightly out of you. I need to use that to get to stage where the circle starts to 15. Now what I want to do is make sure that I am sending it through the same way each time. So I'm going to use Sharpie to put little marks there. Now, after a couple of rolls through, it's going to be really quite obvious which way to send it through because it was such a stretched out. But it might be the first couple of roles. It's not quite so obvious, So this just gives me a little bit of a little bit of a helping hand, so make sure that that markets the bit that goes first. This first role probably won't do very much. It's all about starting to set up the rolling mill. Yes, going through so easily that hasn't had any impact it'll But I now know it. Just tighten it up just a little bit. So starting to set up the rolling mill that caught a bit and that's definitely catching now . So I hope you can see now see posts, maybe some lines. Um, just no permanent marks. But just where everything's being rolled through and the polish is I put on here has Bean, uh, cleaned off. But, um, some of those have transferred onto the silver that go once everything's polished up. But you also got to see that it has stretched out a little bit. Still wanted to look a bit more there. I'd like a little bit more of those petals to be on the disc, so gonna tighten it up a little bit more again. And it is good to do this a little bit of time not to try and roll out to the oval or than one go, because if you do that was so easy to go. It's a bit too far. So again sent it through in the same direction. Thank you. Gonna do one move Rome. So just turned that maybe half a hand weights starting this. Send it for the same way. And I'm happy with that. Far more those petals. The tips of those pretzels aren't fitting all but, um, far more of it is. So I'm happy with that. Especially remember that the oval is going to stretch out even mawr when I send it through again with sin textual material to put a pattern, a texture on the silver. So it's patterned with a bit of a texture as well as the golden flower. So my next thing is that I need to prepare the oval so that it can have the gold bondage on top of it. 8. Textured Flower Pendant - preparing the silver: this section of the class is just a quick reminder as to how to prepare Sterling Silver that he can attach the gold to the top can attach a beautiful 24 carat gold foil. The gold only bonds securely to find silver. So what I need to do is carry out process depletion, gilding, which will remove the copper from the surface. Now, this is only a very quick lucrative. If you want to know more about the technical detail on what shit, What should post set a little bit more? Then do go back and have a look at the golden butterfly pendant. But this is a set, just a quick reminder and you've actually already seen me do a little bit of it already. In your nearing section, I heated up with silver. It had some oxygen ization formed on the surface, and I then put the silver in the pickle to clean the oxides Agent off. So this time, while I heat the silver up again. But I'm going to do now with your torch. Then you will see less oxidation formed. I'm just going to heat it up until that Sharpie mark that I used to tell me, said it through the roller used to help you orientate it. Go Okay, so you see there is some oxidation phoned, but not nearly as much as I was when I a kneeled the silver. And that's because the pickle had really taken some of the copper off the surface. So what I need to do is go through a process of heating quenching because you never put anything caught in the pickle in the pickle to clean up the copper. Take it out. It's a bit of a rinks. Give it a nice dry and then go through the process again on Did you need to go through the process? In total about eight or nine times? This was already This is now. It's second time, so I'm going to need to go through the process it a bit more. But why I won't make you watch the whole of it. If you want to see more of it, said, go back and have a look at the golden butterfly pendant. But what I will do is bringing back again when this is ready, when all of the copper has been taken out of surface and We just left with the fine silver so you can see what it looks like. A That stage my silver oval has now had in total nine heating, scrunching going in the pickle being rinsed, drying it off and continuing. So it now has got a fine cell surface as much of the copper that I possibly can has been removed from the surface, and it's now ready for the gold to be applied to it on. What I want to do is just use the small blowtorch to show you the color that it is now to show you that when I take the heat off to the flame off the silver, there's no discoloration, no oxygen ization, no copper with top. Okay, One thing to tell you as well that is that I periodically turned the silver over, so I made sure that I heat it from both sides because it is a symmetrical shape is not clear necessarily, which is the front of which is the back of a pendant at this moment, until I put the gold flower on it. So I just want to make sure I did heat it from both sides. So I'm going to let that air cooled now, because by heating it I've also made sure is it's really nice and clean. Once it's cooled down, I'm only going 200 from the sites or with river section tweezers to make sure that the surface that the gold flower is going to go on remains nice and clean and dirt. Any finger grease could inhibit the bonding of the gold to the silver. 9. Textured Flower Pendant - applying the gold flower: It's time to cut out my gold flower on did to bond it on top of the silver to decorate pendant. Greatest really, really beautiful pendant. Just a quick reminder about the tools that I'm going to be using to do the combo. I've got my ultralight kill one of the heat sources that you can use to carry out Kwan Bo Intimation The Golden Butterfly pendant projected again. If you want to remind her for the different heat sources that are suitable for combo, then go back and have a look at that section that I'm using mine for all to like kill at the moment. I've also got negate burner shatter. Have you pick up the gold to put it in place and to burnish it onto silver? Because, remember, it's not just the heat. It's the burnishing two in combination that gets the gold and the silver to bond. Prepare of river section tweezers so I can handle everything safely, even whilst it's hot. Andi, I've also got a wooden cocktail steps I wouldn't coffee store directly could use a wooden cocktail stick or when toothpicks something like that. I'm going to use that later on to help me test whether the silver is the correct temperature. They're part of water. The water will help me to pick up the gold dump in the end of my get invited him to do that once I got my steel block because I like to take the work off. The kill assumes it's done. Don't actually leave it on there for too long to allow the gold to bond more more to look as if it's sinking more more into the gold. So take it off the kill and pushed him still block. There's still blocked because it's draws Heat away from the silver will allow it to cool down a little bit quicker. There's no technical reason. Toe wanted to cool down quicker. Apart for the fact I am impatient to get onto the next stage of the project. And, of course, I've also got goat. Nice new piece of gold foil. I've got that so part flower that I cut out of the orange paper. Well, I've also got the flower punch. That camp was going to move about a little bit in this section. I'm going to move it into orbit closer so you can see how I'm going to cut the gold flower out to get some hints and tips for cutting this type of shape out, and I'll move it again to get you a closer view of what's going on on top of the kill. I do recommend cutting out the shape that you want to cut out the gold out of paper first because it allows you to do a little bit of planning. As you saw earlier, it allowed me to double check the size, the disk and how much to roll it out by now, I can use it to just a word check. Plenty of gold foils there. It's a bit too long for me, too. Use that side, which is a shame, because it would make much better use of the sheet. But so you have to go in there. But I've got plenty of wits there to even make the flower a little bit wider. I am actually going to cut it out a little bit wider than this. I think so little bit more goes on then, Um, uh, it's the weight of this because I want some extra gold toe hang off the edge cause I what I don't want I get the, uh if I get Silver Oval and I'm just handling by the ages the surface doesn't come down to become dirty. What I don't want is the cut off age of the flower showing on the silver. I want it hanging over the edge slightly says I condone trim off the excess gold. It's a nice following clean flowing design. So that's the look we're going for. So now what I want to who put that Bank one took the kill How to go there. And I've got plenty of room because with this particular design, because it's a two part cutter to cut out the shape that has got to cut out shapes inside it, I don't actually see the gold ends underneath over clarify papa tenia be to see what I mean . All I see is the gold. You see that while I see is the gold that showing through the little sections that a cut out of the petals So I don't actually see all of this shape in the gold, which you would do normally with, um, a less intricate paper punch. So put, that just shows your house pretty smooth. The gold foil is a little bit from because I was checking it over like that so he could seem so called it a little bit right at the bottom there. So what I'm doing is just having a look through the bottom, seeing that the gold is far enough in So comparing it to this, the shape here hoping a tin I'm gonna cut out. I think most of that the central section there Give me a squeeze. Tight. It's an oversight. Little bits of gold go safely. We go safely on the table from each retrieve. One thing I didn't remind you about, by the way to apologize, is so the reason why I got this folded up in a piece tracing paper. It means that I can get a much cleaner. Cut it a bit more robustness. Sort of a fine. So very soft. 24 karat gold. So it just to make things a bit stronger Threat. Nice, crispy cut from there. Since you play, take a chance to that fold. Yeah, Not beautiful. So good. Pop it. I was gonna pop it on top off. Still broke? No. So I don't handle it any more than I have Andi put that piece of gold somewhere safe on. And what's the's of orbits of goat? If you needed to the state, you could still move it about. Um but what I'm going to do now is plugged to kill men. This comb takes up to about 20 minutes to heat heart. Remember, that's one of the advantages apart from the cost of the kill takes longer to heat up, but once it's heated up, it's going to remain that really, really nice. Study temperature.
