About This Class

In the Form & Space section of THE ART & SCIENCE OF DRAWING series, you’ll learn to do drawings that give the illusion of 3-Dimensional objects occupying deep space.

You’ll start by learning how to draw the sphere, the cylinder and the cube, the foundational shapes that all other forms, no matter how complex, are constructed from. You'll even get an introduction to linear perspective! Never again will your drawings appear flat and lifeless on the page.

This is the perfect course for painters who want to add depth to their work and the perfect primer for figure drawing. Learning how to think and draw in terms of volume is what makes the difference between good artists and great artists.

This course contains the third installment of an 8-part series. The fourth installment, Form & Space (part B), will be launched on SkillShare in March 2018.

If you're a beginner, we recommend going through the entire series in order.  If you've got some drawing experience, feel free to mix and match The Art & Science of Drawing courses to suit your personal needs as an artist! The complete Art & Science of Drawing series consists of 40 mini-lessons that are designed to take you from basic skills to more advanced shading techniques.  Explore all of the classes in The Art & Science of Drawing Week 1: Basic Skills:

Great teacher! He makes complex ideas into a simplified approach that is easy to understand. Taking this class and doing the work is the missing pieces to making my creative journey better. I am excited!
Clear instructions and very organized delivery of these lessons. There is a purpose to every step. The student feels like she is on a path and can practice with intention. Follow the homework advice that you can never practice too much--you will definitely see results.
This is a fantastic course for anyone wanting to hone their drawing skills. The instructor, Brent Eviston, gives clear and understandable explanations, and great insight regarding the observation of a subject. Brent makes obvious the subtle nuances of perspective drawing, form, and space which has given me new eyes and knowledge in these cases. I suggest that anyone who is interested in this course to please consider taking week 1 and 2 in "The Art and Science of Drawing" series if you haven't already done so as this course builds upon the knowledge and practices in those weeks. I can personally attest that I have noticed an improvement in my own work and my thinking as a result of the information conveyed in this course. It's less stressful and arduous, and more enjoyable. I'm looking forward to future installments in this series by Brent.

I have been teaching drawing for over 20 years at studios, museums, galleries, and schools throughout California. I started teaching traditional drawing and figure drawing online in 2016 and love working with students from more than 125...
