Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. "Zentangle" is a registered trademark of Zentangle, Inc. (zentangle.com).

Tranzending is a concept developed by Zentangle Inc. The basic concept uses black ink pens in contrasting sizes, graphite shades and white pencil highlights to add layers. I've been using the concept with great joy, expanding it in the other direction, with the addition of color and white lines used in the background, as you'll be able to learn in the class. This class can be a wonderful foundation that you will be able to use to build your skills and provide new ideas.

1. Intro: Hi, everybody. And welcome to my new online class. I'm Alyssa, also known as Zen Lena. Today we are focusing on a specific drawing method called transcending. Transcending is basically tangling over tangles or joing in layers. The bottom layers are visible through the top layers, which increases effect off texture ring and adds more interest to the drawing. It is a concept developed by the creators of Zen Tangle, Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. We used basics, entangle supplies, black, then drift I pencil and white charcoal pencil to Joe layers of tangles. Today I will show you how to draw over white tangles on that her background and it will be super fun. Find the exact least of supplies in the project section. Prepare those that you have and get ready to create. 2. Background Preparation - Belle: we'll start our transcending discovery with a string people drew for more lis straight, um, lines to mark the borders. I'm drawing slightly curvy lines that are shaped kind off like fescue tango. Yeah, and this will be a base for the tangle that we will use in the background, and the name of the tangle is built. After drawing the fescue esque shape, we are continuing to dro the bell tangle by making a kind off leaf like structure first by drawing lines on one side. Now I can see that here I have a slightly bigger surface covered, so I can add a line here before I continue. You can do the same if you feel like you can use maybe a balk here shape. But now, after I had the line on the other side, I haven't had be able to draw more line some the first side. We're using very organic wavy lines here, so there's almost no way to make mistakes. Just throw some nice, curvy lines and now we're going to add some or lines. And if you have followed my previous classes, you already know that the aura lines are actually parallel lines. These lines will not be visible after we finished the drawing, um, nothing away that he will be able to see this shape underneath the drawing with black pen that we will finish later. We go on, li see the texture and for the transcending kind of technique, I recommend using the tangles that are consisting off many lines in the background and then some organic textures. So so choosing the right tangles is I believe the key to ending up with a nice transcending drawing and I will guide you through the process. And hopefully you will be able after you are finished with this class, to develop this technique more on your own and maybe even come up with some new ideas or new looks, make sure to tell me if you come across any new ideas. So this is our bell shape. That will be a foundation off the transcending drawing. 3. Tangle 2 - Ratoon: after our big room This finished I took the Micron PM pen and I will use this middle that we have established on our tile. Um, to try Teoh make a circle that we will transform into a gym or Zen Jim, as we call it. Consent angle. And they drew also another order line. You can see that our my circle is far from perfect. And this is the last one. Do not sweat about being precise. You can see how I sometimes, um, try to enhance the lines to cover some. Let's say mistakes. Although we all know there are no mistakes in San Tangle. Now, I will pretend that there is a line going underneath this one and I will continue with this line and meats at the top of the metal. I'm heading again apparel in line ending here so that we can pretend that there is a top and a bottom stem off this shape. So doing it here again, going around starting here with apparel line and ending here because these two lines meet underneath this one I'm sometimes struggling with under vocabulary because English is not my mother tongue. So please forgive me for that. And the last one. Make sure to check um, the downloadable documents because there you will be able to find the step outs to all of the tangles we will use today and the return is finished. 4. Tangle 3 - Verve: Now I will end another tangle for one of my favorite favorite tangles, and then we'll actually use these endings off our bell shape, too. Drove for circles a roughly where they end, and after that I will add one s line in one direction and other s line in the other direction. There were repeated four times, one and the other. It seems to me that Maybe I can either line here to reduce this space just a bit, so it's more similar to the lines or to the space size on the other sides. And I will repeat the same process on the other side. I think I'm at another line here, maybe also another one. So this thesis spaces look more similar to each other and downs with here as well. We don't worry about perfect symmetry because there is no perfection. That's one reason. And also there is a certain charm and being in perfect. And this is what the manual burke off any kind is about. We're not machines, okay? And we're actually not striving to replicate any kind of machine work. Of course, you can do this on your iPad or whatever you use and use some kind of a symmetry tool and end up with perfect results. But actually I like the perfection off. Being in perfect. Our birth is now finished, and I think I will squeeze in some flax shapes here. And flux is just a simple teardrop shaped single that can also have some ornaments, like the one cell use here, a line and the dots, which gives us more off. Um, let's say flower like or botanical Look, he saw that I added one line additional lines to the verb Here You can always do such a thing if it seems to you that the drawing will and with more balance, if you do it by all means, just go ahead into it. And I also head for more. At the opposite side you can see is I'm drawing that. All of these shapes are really simple shapes. Orbs are maybe the shape that I use most in my Zan tangle process because it's so easy and they attend to look so effective you can feed them almost anywhere 5. Drawing Final Details: is I'm thinking of this shape now of these empty spaces inside our red. Soon I believe that it will benefit whatever I drawing it from some more lines. So I will do this, which is not something I usually do, because usually I just finished the background first, then add the tangles over it. That's in the artistic process we are allowed to use whatever we believe could benefits the final result. And I'm just heading several and several more lines, which you can add anywhere, actually, because this shape bell that we used in the background, as I already told you when we were when we were drawing it, It's not something that we will be able to recognize when we're finished. So now it was some more lines, and there's I'm waiting the four for the ink to be completely dry. I will feel these big petals with some warps. - I'm nesting these orbs inside the petal shape in a way that they're most squeezed into the shape. And now I'm going back to these empty spaces inside hours, Mattoon and I'm going to draw almost flux like tangle on, and first I'm going to divide the shape vertically in half. And then those hives in two halfs, meaning I will get four shapes, which I will use in a way that I'm a rounding the top edges. So the side where there is more space, I'm making it round and ending up with the shape that is almost same as the flux tangled Onley a little bids ticker on the bottom, so doing it again. Half then split the house in two. House around the edges, feeling this space is extra spaces with blacking and at the end adding some lines inside the flax is and every drawing or okay. Let's say almost every drawing will really benefit from inking some off the bed grounds. I like my drawings, too. Be contrasted. It will have some colored spaces where we will be able to see, uh, the white lines, the structure of the white lines underneath. On the contrary, almost always heading black spaces. He's a good idea before going to the coloring process. I also had some black ink, too. These small pittle shapes or leave shapes. Yeah, these shapes candles will be filled with orbs or maybe with some other tangles for textures . Coloring the Tangles: I decided to use two colors for the coloring, the blue and the yellow. I will actually start to read the middle with the Zen Jim, the way I usually approach the coloring of Zengin. Then I color used the car on the top left side, and also I colored the rim at the bottom and leave this space bottom right without any color. Now is I will blend this color with the blending brush with the water brush this color well , of course, spread around, which is totally fine, because afterwards, I will also use the white pencil for the highlights. I decided also to color the verb with yellow color and what I'm doing G's. I'm coloring the parts off the shape that are disappearing beneath the neighboring sections . So this part off he's disappearing, been AIDS or under right soon, what these parts that I am now coloring are disappearing under the other part off Mattoon. So since this is not dark color, I would also use some graphic pencil later on to enhance the shades. But I will first start with color, then blending it with water brush. After its try, I will continue with highlighting and additional shades. And for additional shades, you can either use your griffin pencil or maybe some kind off grey brush. Ben, like this 1 may be or something silly. Similar to that I'm going back to my water brush, and I'll just planned this color. And Pete, it seems like it's it's not releasing enough water, and with these water brushes, it's interesting because you don't want them to release too much water. But also there has to be some water. Otherwise, you are not able to blend and activate the pigment, so it's always, you know, the fine line. Sometimes I use also the ticker brush, but it's even more difficult to control the amount of water. So my camera just shut down because I ran out of the battery and I'm really sorry for that . But what I did before it died on me was just I used my water brush to blend all of these yellow surfaces that I previously put some color on, and Teoh and Ed the contrast. I will use blue color on the shapes that are next to the yellow ones reach our my flux shapes. And also, I really use blue color in these small circles or small gyms that I have inside the verb tangle. And I'm using it in a way actually, same way or almost the same way, because the shape is late, smaller than the central Zengin. I'm putting some, uh, blue color in the supply of corner, and I will just unlikely blended. And afterwards, Havel in hands that tweet the addition offs, um, white highlights shades and so 7. Adding More Color: and I will also use blue to color read. So I'm using gate, same way as for other shapes. So in these spaces where one shape goes over another like here, I'm adding some darker color. In this case, I'm using blue color for shading on these spaces where one shape goes below the other. I would also use it here next to my Sen Jim. And right now I'm thinking about what to do with the's. Flux is in the middle because I believe they would also look best with some blue. But I'm still thinking about whether to add or yellow. Do not forget about thes other over lips that you have here in our platoon tangle. If you're using the same paper as I do, which is the 10 tile made buys entangle, then you know how specific this paper is. It's really delicate, and it us absorbs water and ink amazingly, which has its benefits. But it's also maybe not the best possible choice for this kind of technique, but I really love using get, on the other hand, because you can create amazing effects by using color and then white pencils, or why the gel pin or whatever medium you like using for highlights. The same goes for gray surfaces. They're just perfect for using ink to draw on it and then some shades and highlights to enhance the drawings. I also sometimes used other kinds off 10 papers or maybe more like a craft brown color paper, which I actually like more for this kind of stuff. But I hoped it for using this in the class because I believe that thesis paper is something that is available to most of you. And now I see that I missed this little guy over here, and I'll just add some color before I continue with the blending and now the time almost finished with blending the blue surfaces. I believe that I will end up using yellow on these foxes, but I'll say this slightly darker yellow here just for the sake of contrasts. And again, as you already know, some more what that to blend these color And the last one 8. Adding Contrast: I took my micron PN panna gain and I'll do something I love doing after I had orbs which is to fill these sharps basis that are left between our orbs and the A G sent tangles with black ink which will make it look kind of squeezed into the space or tripped alike. You take a round shape and then you squeeze it in a small space and then you use some kind of a liquid or something to see it. Next thing called Zoo is I'm heading another war line. And after I do that, I will use my ticker. Ben, go eight, probably and also my brush pan to feel these corners off my tile with black ink. This is something that will give additional contrast. Wonderful contras to our time on it will enable me to add a finish to the style that will complement thes central drawing wonderfully. You will see what else do You might not agree with me on my verdict and at the end, if you like the project better, we doubt the last step I'm going to take. After I finished the shading and highlighting process, you might just skip it so anything I do here can be tailored to your own taste or your own ideas. I actually love seeing your projects finished, especially when you add something that make them your own off course. If you are a beginner, it's easier to just follow the instructions and go along with the project exactly as it is . But where they would alike or reach for you is to fall in love with a technique and find your own style and your own way to develop the projects that you learn how to do. And you can see how I have to take some of them paper. I don't know how how to even say the in English residual that gets, um, picked up by the pen because, as I already said, this paper is really delicate. Okay, now I'm finished with coloring. These, um, dredges on a zay said, I'll save you the brush. Boone. This is the one I'm using. I have here, but you can also do it with your 01 pen or you're always been micron Pierre or whatever tools you are using to draw. The lines can also be used to feel the spaces with color. This is actually a very relaxing opportunity. But when I'm feeling these longer drawing processes, I like to speed up the process by using some kind of a ticker pen or a brush pen to finish this task. But please, if you are using your dinner, Ben instead, off the brush pain or whatever I used here, you just have to pause your radio. If you're drawing along on and finish with in King this background on, then continue watching the video after you've finished. Or you might also hope to do it later. And now actually like this, because you see how this contrasts are compliments style, the drawing really nicely. 9. Shading: I still have to color these nice words that I drew around the central part, and I'm doing again the same thing. I'm using the color in the upper left corner or upper left side, and then with my water brush, I'm blending it, and at the later stage we will add some more shades and contrasts. Here. With these, we will use our pencil to at some color on the sides, so it's a slightly different approach, but you can also use the same approach as used with other around shapes. But by using the color this way, it will actually look as though that sides are in the shade. One, the central part is highlighted. This is what I'm going for. I took my White Order color pencil to highlight some sections on, and you will notice how, and I'm highlighting or shading. I'm always using whatever tool I'm using at an angle, so I'm not using it like this. The way withhold pen perfectly. I'm using it almost horizontally. That makes me able to control it easier, I would say my favorites to for highlighting is actually these charcoal pencil. This is a charcoal pencil by General pencil. That's the issue with the general pencil charcoal pencil. And this particular paper is that the surface off the paper gets damage. If you push too hard, even if you are using it gently, the paper kind off flakes in that with this chalk, because track is not so delicate about them usual using it anyway, You just have to be mindful off the paper that you are using so that it's not too damaged. And I also used my blending stub, the one that I dedicated for white highlights, and you can see how it effects the surface of the paper. So I'm not using it accessibly. This is why I first took this. What her colored pencil, Because the oil based on and, um, vex based pencils are more delicate. But the charcoal pencil actually leaves, um, more prominent residue, so it's better. Better for highlighting. The only downside is that you have to be careful about how to use it so that the paper is not the damaged. I will also use Ah Joe open. Glater, too, highlight the parts of my Bangles that I would like to kind like most but the first, the first layer is always the pencil, and I'm using the charcoal pencil again. But I he was it like this. Okay. And this way I will actually achieve almost blended appearance because I'm pushing at the very edge off the paper. And my grip is not as hard as I'm using it towards the middle of the paper. So you can always already see how, uh, the showing looks nicer with these highlights because this is again the same as with black ink that we use. It's something that brings more contrast and interest to our trolling. I'm using it also the orbs and I would just carefully and likely use the blending stump to may be removed for a part that I don't need. 10. Highlighting: and we need not so forget about these small surfaces here. Our orbs that be nested inside the rat soon tangle. Teoh had some additional shades, too. The yellow parts as our yellow color is really a light, so it will benefit from some additional shade. Andi, I'm using it on orb specifically over the yellow color of background to create an illusion , having a three D object and I will also use it here along the edges off my retune and and the places where parts off very tangle overlapped. - And it's always I'm using my blending stump. Teoh blended, and I really believe that these additional shades bring out the best in such a tangle is easier a tune because we are trying to. I amplify this dimensionality off the tangle on and therapies ideal because it has these parts, that is, let's say, elevated and I just took my gel pin to had some additional highlights in this part that I would like to make almost shine with light. I really hope that you are enjoying the benefits off Zan tangle technique or other art the unique or craft off your toys, especially in the times when there is so much uncertainty and chaos on the Bori. Because the best thing we can do for ourselves, and also for for e people around this is to try to find our own space off quiet and tranquility to help us and endure and maybe even help us develop new skills on this kind of practice is almost like a meditation in motion. The way we are trying, Teoh enjoy the present moment. So we're focused on each line one at a time or right now on each highlight wanted. It's time we're not looking back at their bust. We are staying focused on the present moment, which is the core off the mindfulness practice. So what you can do is also practice other mindfulness tools like meditation or so something similar but breathing techniques. But what I love about Zan tangle is that it doesn't it is just this flow. This presence happens naturally as you create, and an additional bonus sees that you are left with a work of art that is a testament to the present moment, but also something that you can enjoy tomorrow or maybe keep tour work the ones. 11. Additional Optional Shading and Layering: Now, before I go on with the final step, I will just show you how to use some kind of, um, brush pen or a similar tool. If you have it, you can use it to. It's have some more deeper shades to our drawing. And if you know me, then you know that I always believe that adding more shades is a good idea. So if you have something like this, it's actually easy and convenient, but it's not something that you have to do. But I would like to give the opportunity to those of you who have such supplies to see the way I like using them. I will also add some more shade to the's space outside those n jim and some additional shades. So with wherever we already used darker color or terrific pencil for shading, you can also add some more shades with your brush Ben or some kind of a similar tool. Wow, this is great. And one more thing I'll use Reach will have some more dipped to earth, and Jim, he's I would add a small shade on the part that he's on the opposite side from the lights or so assumed that light sources top left. This is why I placed this highlight. It's up left on top, off the shade, and you can actually study the shading off Zan gems by looking at the photos off some gems . Um, I believe that this additional shades really gives it some more. That is our last step. I will add an additional layer, which you might first observe and then decide if you like it or not. Some of you might decide that it's just too much, which yeah, it's It's a valid argument because there is already so much going on on these side. But I actually wanted to show you because their several ways off approaching the transcending method. So the original transcending that he's, um, invented or launched by Zen Tangle founders, which are, um, Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts from the U. S. And they did the video needs. And what they used was just a typical Zen tangle. Old schools and tangled black and whites drawing to which they did another layer edit and another layer by using some black ink and wide pencil so they actually use various sizes off black Ben to at the new shapes to an already finished drawing on. This is how they create another Lear. And on this layer, they also used wides, um, white pencil to add some new highlights. So the common thing about those approaches is that we are dangling over the tangled background. So we have one layer off tangles on top off another layer. What? I was really droning. So when I started diving into this transcending method was dangling over the white background and it kind of became my thing. Andi, I really started playing with it on various backgrounds. I enjoyed it very much. But there is also this additional step or additional way to make this method work by adding some white lines over the home finished style. So it might be, um, just some straight or wavy lines without trying to draw a certain tangle. In this case, this is maybe the most likes, like Chris and Moon tangle. But you can use any kind of shape, and I could also use it here in the middle off my drawing. Maybe just add one so you can see it and then you can use which shapes you will Joe and which he will leave out. But I want to show you the possibilities. And then you can I think about which ones you would like Teoh Using your drawing process. Um, I really months try to True, Um, symmetrical. Better now I'm just drawing some additional spaces to add more interest to the already existing drawing on. I believe this is just enough. Maybe even more than enough, but it's just shows you maybe another direction you can take when using this amazing transcending the peak. 12. Project Time!: It's time for the project.
