Difficult People; What Makes YOU difficult?

Assignment 1 – What Makes People Difficult?

We all love to theorise about what makes other people act as they do.

The opening lessons on this course clarified the term ‘Difficult People’, and also asked ‘What Makes People Difficult?’. We’ve explained that it is the behaviour we are talking about here, and that labelling a person as ‘difficult' – though it is natural to do it – is actually counter-productive.

This assignment is designed to help you get insight into two key aspects when tackling any behaviour you find challenging or difficult to deal with:
1) What you think might be driving the behaviour
2) What tends to provoke difficult behaviour in you?

While these two questions might not seem to be related, they are. One of the best ways of gaining insight into another’s motivations is to look inside ourselves to see how we’d react in a similar situation.

Assignment 2 – How to Listen Well

It's been called the 'first rule of effective communication'. Before you can tackle difficult behaviour effectively you need to listen for clues, then gradually shift to a style of communication to avoid head-to-head combat!

Listen well and you'll not only be in a better position to tackle the behaviour, you'll also pick up insights and clues as to the best strategy to use.
