Welcome to Lesson 2 of the TEFL Guide.

In this lesson, we will take an in-depth look at Group Work and Pair Work in the ESL Classroom environment. We will explore a few different activities that you can use to make use of group or pair work in your classroom and how you can use them efficiently and with purpose.

As well as this we will discuss the advantages of  group and pair work and also some of the problems that may arise and how you can overcome them. 

Furthermore, we will learn about how we can efficiently and effectively organize and implement pair work and group work into our classes.

Throughout the course, there will be tasks to complete and there will be a PPT guide to follow as the videos play.

1. Group and Pair work INTRODUCTION: Hi there. In this, we look to become Luther peer work. At work. We will look at different 2D so that you can use group work, computer work. And we'll also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using group and pair work activities. Finally, we'll learn how we can effectively and efficiently organized pair work and group work activities in our classroom. Throughout the course though we are a couple of activities and tasks for you guys to take power n as well. And you've any questions or comments, feel free to reach out to me. I hope you enjoyed guys. Thank you very much. 2. Setting Up.: The essential Tafel Survival Guide. Lesson 2, pair work and group work. Part one, pair and group activities. First, we need to consider how to introduce the concept of group and pair work to our students. This may be a new thing for them to do in the classroom. We need to give them time to adjust along with a set of steps to follow. First, we need to introduce the activity and explain what we expect and need from them. We need to look at the topic briefly and give them a short and concise explanation of what the aim is. Then we need to do the activity with the whole class together. This will give them all concept of what is expected from them and give them some practice to get the ideas flowing. Next, you divide them into groups or pairs depending on the task is and depending what you want them to do. And you can also give them a time limit with some clear goals and aims here, you're also able to assign some roles. For example, you can have a liter of each group, or you can have a note taker of each group. Or you can assign someone to specifically ask the questions and someone to specifically answer the questions. When the activity begins, you need to monitor them as it happens. This means you walk around, you listen, you can correct some people you do not need to over correct or make people feel awkward or self-conscious, but definitely monitor, let them know that you're there and listening. Finally at the end, you can get one or two of them to stand up and present their arguments to the class. These group work and group activities are routines that are setup over time. They will not be perfect the first time that you try it. And you will see ways to improve and make it better for the next time. The important thing is you create these routines and you don't give up. Try again and tweak it. Learn from heuristics. 3. Group And Pair Work Activities.: Activities for pair work and group work. There are many different activities for pair work in group work, I'm sure you can find a whole host of others if you take some time to do some research. I have picked three specifically that work well for me and had been effective in my classes. The first one I've picked his pattern practice. This is where you get repetitive answers with slight variations. This is also a good use of the chunks sentence system, where you can practice sentences and use them and interesting or new ways with adjectives and verbs. Each time the student creates a slightly different sentence with the same basic pattern. For example, if the focus sentence structure is what happens if then student one can ask something like, what happens if you stay up too late, then students could answer. You will be tired the next day for school. And then student one can ask a different question. What happens if you eat too many cakes? Student to answer, you will get fat and unhealthy and so on. Student one varies the question each time and students to various the answer each time. Then after a set amount of time, you can get them to swap. The next one is comprehension activities. This is a very typical one of any ESL and TEFL classroom. As very often you're given a block of text or a reading for the students to ask questions and find out information from. So you read an appropriate passage and you work in pairs and groups, and you cc cues to talk, ask, and discuss about what was read. You can make use and develop specific reading skills here such as note-taking, skim reading skills, abbreviations, summarizing, and speaking out in your own words. All of these are very effective IOLs preparation for the future. Then you can give them tasks while they're doing it. And you can get them to circle the verbs, circled the adjectives, or find the main idea. I'll look for themes. At the end. You get into present and summarize to the class and allow for questions from the other groups. Finally, there's the classic debate and discussion activity. This is where there's a topic and the teacher set some goals or aims. For example, you can discuss the pros and cons of homework, the pros and cons of hunting. Or you can talk about which job is the best, which colors the best, which animal is the best? The teacher can present them a list of items and they can discuss them like jobs or sports. The students can have the goal of deciding which is the most important, which is the one they would like to do the most, which is the best peg, and so on. In their groups they can write it down, take notes, and then they can argue for and against with the other groups. At the end, it promotes discussions and debating and the students will have their own opinions about these things. And if you stimulate them correctly, they will want to express their views. The teacher can cultivate this atmosphere as well and get them leading phrases and connecting sentences like that's a great point. However, I totally disagree because that's very interesting. But I think obviously these phrases are for older groups and older students. If they are younger groups, you can simply let them say basic phrases like I like, because it's good, because The blah, blah, blah is the best and so on. You make a decision depending on the age group and the level of your particular classes. 4. Advantages And Disadvantages.: Advantages and disadvantages. So now let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of user group and pair work in class. Each class is going to be different and you're going to face your own challenges in your own particular classes. I want you to think about what problems you might face or how we might overcome them. Before we start this part, I have a task for you. I would like you to think of at least three advantages and disadvantages of your own before you look at my choices. First of all, let's look at some advantages. The most obvious advantage is that students are more involved with the class and they're more involved with each other. One of the biggest things is that in a bigger class, it's very hard to include everybody. This fixes that problem. Many times when you're cold calling, you're left with 15 to 16 kids just watching another kid do something. This is the solution, getting them in groups and talking together, actively working together at the same time. It also helps the students feel secure, comfortable. They help each other. They do peer to peer learning where the smarter students who always help the younger and maybe less experienced students in their group, you can assign these types of roles. Specifically, try to match more clever students with less clever students, and they will help each other grow. In general, the students will be less worried about making mistakes. They will feel less self-conscious in their groups. They will feel safer and they will feel like they can open up a bit more and be less scrutinized. This is a good thing and hopefully it will mean that they will feel more confident to speak more English. As well as all of this. It just makes a nice change to usual class formats which are cold calling, drilling, activities, games, listening, and reading and writing. Having a group activity is a fun injection into the class and it makes things a little different and changes up the dynamic. Okay, so let's look at some disadvantages. Obviously, one of the main ones is going to be, if you let it, it will be noisy and out of control. Sometimes this can be good. You know, you want a bit of energy in your class, you want a bit of excitement. And if they're talking animated about a subject in English, then it's not so bad. But of course, you need to monitor and you need to control and to make sure that they're not speaking native language. Even as an advantage. And the students, we more relaxed and there'll be less afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes will still be commonplace, and you need to decide how much you're going to correct this. You obviously can't monitor all the groups at once, but if you hear some obvious mistakes, then you do need to try and correct it gently and quietly so as not to embarrass anybody. There will be a problem with a bit of lack of control at the beginning when you try these things, some of the students will be joking and they'll be lazy and they might even be disrupted. A lot of the students are normally disruptive, will see these as opportunities to be lazy, messy world too much, and just be an annoyance. So you need to monitor and have a behavior management system ready in place for those who are circumstances. You may have some confused or shy or just quiet students in your class. And generally, they may not do as well in the beginning because these groups are going to be dominated by the more confident speakers, the ones who have lots of ideas and want to tell the class, tell their friends, and tell the teacher. You need to work our way where you can get the shy and quiet kids involved as well. Maybe you assign them a role as note-taker or you assigned and then the role as the person who tells the rest of the class at the end of the activity, wherever you decide is best for that particular student. Time management is going to be an issue, especially in the first few times you try these things, you're going to find it takes a lot of time. But the unorganized, the more you to, the more refined it will become, you need to make sure that you know what you're doing, how much time each part takes, and how much time you can allow for the whole activity. 5. Organizing and Guidelines.: Organizing peer work and group work. Okay, so here I'm going to give you a specific example of a group work idea for an intermediate class. The aim here is going to be for them to learn like and don't like. The goal is going to be have them use student-student interactions and group work, the practice asking and answering the questions. The topic is going to be what do you like or don't like about sport, candy, homework and teachers, you can assign a few different topics. It's fine. You can get different groups, different topics. It's also fine. And again, how do we execute this? First, we introduced the activity, then we provide examples. We set a time limit. We divide them into groups or pairs. We assign the roles, we let them do it. We monitor them while they're doing it. And then finally, they present final ideas to the class as a whole. You need to have a think about what the size of your class is, how many students are there? I have taught classes of 50 students in one class, 25 students in one class, 161, class 84. So you need to calculate which activities are more suitable for the classes that you're going to be teaching. Dividing the class. Here, I have an activity for you to do. I want you to draw a plan of your own classroom. And then I want you to show me how you divide it up into groups for your activity. How could you do this efficiently and with a little disruption as possible? In this activity, you need to think about the disadvantages that we talked about previously. How can you minimize some of these disadvantages? How can you prep beforehand and how much time do you need to prep beforehand? How can you make this as efficient as possible? Final thoughts, hints and tips. Here are some hints and tips that I have for you to help you with your strategy. First, you need to decide on your plan and stick to it, be consistent, create a routine. It might not work properly the first time you tried, but don't give up. Give it another try. The next time you do it. Be more effective and quicker. The students will understand what you expect from it. Match your strong and weak students. Like we talked about before, this is a good opportunity for peer to peer learning. Assign some roles and help the weaker students get into the glutes with the stronger students. And you will see them perform better. Decide on a time limit. And as well as this, decide on a clear topic with aims and goals. Make sure that you know what your purposes. Make sure that you know what you want to achieve from these activities. Make sure to monitor them effectively. This means do not sit at the front and expect them to do it without you looking at them, you need to wander around and make your presence known. You don't have to correct every mistake, but correct a few of them here and there, and just let them know that you are watching. Finally, you want them to present at the end efficiently. This means you don't want just one student from each group doing it. You want a few students bill to speak and make sure they're not waffling on, make sure their points are clear and concise.
