Using the case study of “Mary”, we use examples of the SMART model, from the first coaching session to the end of the process.  This section will cover specific goal setting and applying these specifics to our practice client “Mary”. 

Next we’ll be looking at measurable goal setting and how you can ascertain whether goals are attainable.  Finally in this section we’ll be looking at at setting goals that are relevant and applying a time frame to a clients’ goals. 1. Case Study Using The SMART Model: in this next lecture, we're going to describe a case of a kind that needs your services is a life coach in order to achieve their goals. While for privacy reasons, the case described here is not based on a single really example, it does include elements from several real life clients. These are indeed the types of issues that your beginning with as a life coach, Andi will be applying the steps and principles off one of the most popular and effective life coaching models today. This smart model. So let's introduce you to marry Mary is in her late twenties. She has a good education, but she has never furthered it beyond a fast university degree. Since graduation, Mary has been doing a job that she hates and is overqualified for. She isn't making source of money she feels she desires, and her personal life holds few purchase for her. There are many life goals that's Mary has wanted to achieve by now. She wanted to have a stable relationship, but instead she feels lonely and doesn't have an active dating life or any real prospects. Her friends aren't really in touch anymore, and they have gone on to start families or to pursue high profile careers. It's not just that Mary is making too little money. The money she does make is poorly managed. She stopped herself into a death trap where credit cards and other unsecured finance supports the lifestyle she wants tohave and, more importantly, wants to be seen. Having Mary wants to change things, she's realized that she isn't happy at all. She's also realized that things simply cannot keep going the way they are now. Despite wanting change in her life, Mary has no idea off where to start. She can't see any way forward out of her dead end job or her unsustainable life Stone. She certainly can't imagine forming new friendships or having a healthy relationship with anyone. That's why she's solicited the services of a life coach, someone who can help her get back on track. In fact, she needs someone to help her figure out where the track is to begin with so that she can get back onto it. This is where you coming? Imagine that's Mary approached you as a life coach. How would you go about helping her? You could simply tell her all the things she needed to do in order to solve her immediate problems. But of course, Mary is not a life coach herself, so she would still not know what process of problem solving you followed. So you're not only going to help Mary figure out what to do about the things she wants to change, but also to help her learn a process to achieve the things she decides she wants. The specific model we're going to use to help Mary is known as the smart model off gold setting. Smart Model is simply a set of attributes that goals must have in order to be achievable. It's Mary's Gold is simply to get rich, for example, that's not really a meaningful goal. How will she get rich? How do you know when you've become rich? When will it happen? There are many questions you can ask to interrogate this girl and break it up into smaller , more manageable steps. The smart model simply refines those questions into their core elements, making it relatively easy to set doable goals. That's what ultimately get you Where you need to go will now take each letter off Smart on the type of gold setting. It stands for Onda. Cry it to Mary 2. Specific Goal Setting: in this lecture will be discussing the S in the smart model the S. In the smart model, it's short for specific goal setting. So exactly what does that me? It means that the goals you want to achieve cannot be vague. Andi, up in the air, seen something like one day I'd like to work with animals is not a specific goal. One day could be next week or 30 years from now. And working with animals could be anything from having a farm to being avenge. When we want to set specific goals, there are a number of questions that have to be asked. Every question has to be asked, but not every single one will be relevant. If a particular question doesn't match the nature of a goal, then weaken simply skip it. So let's have a look at the questions that have to be asked. What do I want to achieve exactly where do I want to achieve it? Specifically? How do I want to achieve it? Exactly when do I want to achieve it? Specifically With whom do I want to achieve this specifically? What are the limitations or conditions precisely, And why do you want to attain this goal? And this last question should be answered in some detail 3. Applying The Specifics To Mary: So let's now go ahead and apply specific goal setting. To Mary's case, we would ask Mary each of these questions for each one of her individual problems. We want her to answer these questions in a specific way and not vaguely, while stating the goals can make you feel like you are achieving something they go can, by definition, not to be achieved. So it holds us back in two different ways. First, by falling us into thinking we're getting somewhere and by being impossible to achieve and therefore doomed to fail. So knowing what we know about Mary and what she wants from her coaching sessions, what he suppose the answers to these questions might look like when post to Mary, she might say something like the following. I want to meet someone and being on a long term relationship. I want to meet them here in the city I live. I want to meet them by were dating out. I want it before I am 30. It has to be with a man within five years of my own age. He has to be employed on self sufficient. I want to do this because I am lonely and need companionship and love, or I will continue to feel depressed. I want to earn enough money to be able to save some every month. I need to find a job that pays more than my current one or our need to get a raise. Alternatively, I need to find more paid work on the side. I need to do this within six months. I need to do this because every month I have less money. That's the start. I want to pay off all of my debt. I need to either earn more money or find a way to lower my cost through budgeting or preferably both. I need to do this within two years. I must do this without damaging my health or overworking myself. I want to do this because I do not want tohave the anxiety of being changed to debt. I want to do a job that suits my interests. I want to find this job close to where I live or it must not require me to move at police. I will find it through networks of friends, acquaintances or through it versus mints. I need to find a new job within six months. The job must relate to what I studied and must involve work that's will benefit from my area of interest. I want this because I constantly feel my job is not satisfying. It is only a way of earning a living and nothing more. As you can tell, Mary has articulated very specific goals. This gives her a starting point from which to work. We don't know yet if her goals are miserable or attainable, but they are very specific. Once this is done, we can move on to the next set of goals. It is important to remember that these goals are not set in stone but can and indeed must be refined as we learn more about Mary's context and has her circumstances change through the time. Next will be moving on to the M in Smart, which stands for measurable goal setting. 4. Relevant Goal Setting: This next lecture is about our in smart, the R stands for relevant. This means that the goals you set has to be relevant to you. There are many things that are specific, measurable and achievable. Andi completely pointless to you in particular. Do you want to learn Swahili? Well, that's great. But as yourself, why? For any goal that you set yourself, you need to ask the following questions. Is this worth achieving or doing? Is this the right time to be doing this? Is the effort quiet in line with the rewards? Andi, Is this something that I should be doing? This criterion for goal setting is a little harder to apply than the rest, simply because how relevant a goal is to you is a very personal thing. It may be useful to ask other people what they think about the relevance of ago for you, but ultimately it could be relevant to you for the reasons that other people simply can't see. Still, we can make some objective judgments on the relevance of golds, which is what will now do with Mary's case. Mary's desire to be in a long term relationship can be considered worse while, while different people have different levels of need or tolerance for relationships in general, were happier and healthier when we have someone special in our lives. It's especially worthwhile for Mary, as her emotional state is so severely affected by her loneliness. Whether this is the right time to be pursuing a relationship depends on a number of things . But in Mary's case, there is nothing going on in her life that would conflict with this particular goal. Whether the effort is worth the reward is difficult to judge. This is only something she could decide for herself. The fact that she is willing to use a modern dating app does, however, lower the time and effort she has to spend on this goal, which makes it more relevant. Should marry be pursuing this? The only condition is that she should want it. Since companionship is a natural and normal human desire. Overall, then this girl is very relevant. Mayor is desire to make enough money so that she can save some is definitely worth achieving, but perhaps not at the cost of her health or other important aspects of her life. She will have to weigh up how much she'll need to sacrifice in order to achieve this goal. And, of course, if the end result will be worth it, Is this the right time? The youngest years when she starts. Saving, of course, is always the better. Mary wants to pay off all of her debt. In modern society, using credit to get a start in life is fairly common, but it can leave us change for many years of our adult lives. Paying off debt is therefore very worthwhile. If Mary did a little research, she would see that focusing on paying off debt before saving is actually a better normal term financial decision. So, in fact, it may be worth holding off on her saving goal at first and trying to accomplish this one, since it may be more relevant to her. As we know, Mary wants a new job because she's unhappy with the courage one she has. This is generally worth while, but she may find it's rather hard to do without first paying off her debts and therefore reducing the amount of money she needs from a job. So while it is a yes for most of the questions, this may not be the right time to look for a new job. If Mary sticks it out and sort her finances, she'll greatly improve her odds of finding a job that she'll love and not have to worry about earning more than she does already. As we can tell, girls that are relevant are not only a better use of your time and energy, but will also lead to more motivation and can help you prioritize goals that are more immediately important. That way you increase the chances that you will complete all of your goals. And even if you don't manage that, the least important ones are likely to be the ones that don't get completed. All in all, then this criteria may be one of the most crucial to getting a good goal strategy in place . 5. Attainable Goal Setting: next will be smoking about the A In Smart. This stands for either attainable or achievable. In either case, it refers to ago that can, in principle be reached. Whether ago accounts is attainable or not very much so depends on the person. While it is possible for someone to become president of the United States, for example, there are very, very few people who have got the right to attributes, background and luck to achieve that goal. So for the vast majority of people setting ago, to become president of the USA is not really an achievable one in the scent we're looking for here. At the same time, there are plenty of goals that are achievable but trivial setting. The goal of making yourself a peanut butter sandwich is eminently achievable, but you have to ask yourself the question. So what an achievable goal is therefore something that may very well be challenging or stretch you to your limits but can be achieved by you in principle, there are two questions that we have to ask in order to verify that this criteria has been met. The first. How can this be accomplished on the second, given the things constraining me. How realistic is this goal? On the first count, we basically need to have an idea of how a gold can be accomplished. For example, if you want it to be an astronaut, there are certain things you have to do in a certain order to achieve that overall goal, like join the Air Force and pass certain exams or get certain qualifications. If you can find a generally accepted path or paths that describe how something is to be achieved, then you're halfway there. The second question is much more personal in nature. Every person, no matter how smart, capable or rich, has constraints on them. These are obviously highly individual nature. Owner Schwarznegger, former governor of California, has stated in the past that he wished to run for the position of president of the United States. But U. S laws prohibit citizens who were not born in the US from running for president in order for Mr Swartz. When I got to achieve this goal, serious amendments to U. S laws would have to be made. This is such a difficult process that the constraint it causes makes this a very unrealistic gold. Indeed. If it does turn out that a particular goal is not realistically achievable. This doesn't mean that we have to throw it away completely. There may be other similar goals that we can modify our existing goals to match. If you can't be an astronaut, you could still aim to be a commercial pilot, for example. 6. Measurable Goal Setting: in this video lecture will be discussing the M in Smart, which stands for Measurable. What do we mean when we say that how goals should be measurable? Well, simply put, this means that the goal needs to have some countable aspect that lets you know when you've achieved it. After all, if you have no way of knowing if you've achieved a goal, then it's not possible to mark it off your list. A good example could be weight loss. If your goal is to lose £20 then it's easy to know when you've reached that point. There are only three questions that you need to ask of your gold in order to know if it's measures up to this criterion. Firstly, how much off something do I need? The second, How many of the thing do I need? And the third question how, when I know that I've achieved ago, let us consider now Mary situation. In light of this, how can we measure each of Mary's stated goals? Do bear in mind that one goal may have multiple measurements or different phases. Numbers may also be connected to time. For example, you may want to make a certain amount of money in total, but break it into a smaller weekly set of goals 7. Are Mary's Goals Achievable : So in light of what we've just covered on what we know about marries goals, let's now look at them again and see if they are achievable or not. Given how common dating and relationships are, Mary's desire for a long term relationship is indeed reasonable. Andi achievable. It's clear what sort of things have to be done to achieve this goal. Earning extra money to save is also something that a good many people do. Whether this is realistic or not would depend on a number of factors. For example, does Mary have spare time to do extra work? Does she have a resume that's will attract additional or higher paying work? We know that Mary wants to pay off all her debt in a very short span of time. This is possible and even achievable. But given her low level of pay at the current moment, it's may not be realistic. To achieve this goal in the desired time, Mary may have to compromise and pay off the debt over a longer period of time. We know that Mary wants a job that matches a long list of dream attributes that she has. While it is certainly possible to get that perfect job. The more constraints she introduced is the lower the chance that this girl will be achievable. Mary may have to settle for some, but not all off her desires. Job attributes when looking for something better. So as you can see, it is extremely important that goals be achievable. We have to be very honest about how realistic our goals are on whether we can achieve them in a reasonable way. But at the same time, we must not shy away for girls that will challenge us in you and interesting ways. 8. Applying The T To Mary: let's now apply the tea to Mary's goals. Let's evaluate them in terms of being timely or time bound. So we know that Mary has said that she wants to meet someone and be in a relationship before she's 30. So we can answer the question when, with this goal, in terms of breaking it up into short, medium and long term time periods, she could make sure to browse the dating app on a daily basis and to secure at least one date on a weekly basis with the eye on securing a permanent relationship within the overall time constraints. This goal is therefore quite timely. Mary has also given herself six months until she has to increase her income somehow, or to cut her costs. In this case, the timeframe may be based on how long she's estimated she can sustain her current financial situation. Mary can use timeliness to break her gold down into shorter pieces. For example, on a daily basis, she compactor lunch rather than buying it up the shops, which will save her money over the course of a month. Mary has also given herself two years to pay off all of her debt although we don't know how much debt she has or how much money she congenital rate to pay for faster two years, maybe a reasonable estimate for the average person who is totally focused on getting bridge of their debt. Although she has set a deadline measured in years, Mary would do better to have monthly deadlines with debt payment goals at the end of each month to reach. Mary has given herself six months to find a new job. This is a type of gold that is very difficult to set deadlines for, since there are so many factors outside of her control, Mary would do better to set goals related to finding a job, such as applying toe ads and set monthly or weekly deadlines for sending out a certain number of applications. So as we can see here, time can be your friend when it comes to achieve in gold. But if you don't watch out, it can be a deadly enemy as well. Frame your goals correctly in a time bound manner and you'll be well on the road to success 9. Timely Goal Setting: in this lecture will be looking at the T in smart, the T stands for timely or time bound. So what does this mean? It's actually rather simple. It's means that your goals need to have a time dimension to them. You can't leave a gold with an open deadline, since it will simply get pushed back time and time again for other goals, which do have deadlines and therefore seem more important. You also don't want to make a deadline for a goal that gives you more times than you actually need to complete it. Generally, how long it takes to finish something will be as much time as was allocated to it. This is sometimes known as parking since rule and was first pointed out in 1955. What tends to happen is that people will do nothing for the first part of the allocated time and then start working furiously. That's the point. They realize that they must get going or they won't make it. By cutting excess time from the deadline, you can save all that wasted time that would usually occur and get right down to the business of achieving the goal. Deciding up front. How much time something will take is not an exact science, however, and another problem known as the planning fallacy should also be kept in mind. We have a tendency to be optimistic about how quickly we can achieve ago and then over promise when it will be done. Somewhere between these two points, we must find a timeframe within which to put our goal. That is not too much and not too little for many things. Accurate timeframes come from experience, but in other cases you'll need to do a little math or research to figure out how much time to give yourself If you need to lose £50 the rules say that she should lose no more than £1 of weight, obviously you cannot give yourself only 25 weeks to reach your goal. The whole point of a time bound gold is to achieve the right level of urgency. If things feel just urgent enough, we'll work on them efficiently. If they feel too urgent, will panic and get nothing done. And, of course, if they don't really urgent it all will never do them to begin with. If a girl is timely or time bound. You can usually get the answers to these questions quite easily. The first When should it to be done? The second. What should be done by the end off today? The third and what should be done at the end of this month? The fourth, what should be done at the end of this year and so on and so on. 10. Measuring Mary's Goals: Now we're going to be setting some measurable goals. Using Mary as our example, Mary May set herself the gold of going on a two least one day a week to increase her chances of reaching her overall goal off getting into a stable relationship that she really wants notes that we don't know how many dates she'll have to go on before she finds someone who she wants to be in a long term relationship with. So here we can't say how many dates she needs before we can take off. This goal is being accomplished, but the smaller weekly goals can be marked off as being successful if she goes on at least one date setting, the goal is also in part about having a target to hit. We cannot always have a scientific reason behind how many we decide to do off a certain thing but must use intuition to determine what is reasonable. The only thing that's not acceptable is doing nothing at all towards achieving the things you want. Mary May set herself the goal that she will save $500 every month from now on, how she gets to the figure she wants to save, maybe based on working out how much she needs for old age or to pay off her debts within a certain time. If she saves that march at the end of the month, she knows that she's achieved her goal for that particular month as we know. When we first met Mary, she said that she wanted to pay off all of the net, so the total settlement amount she owes is the measurable goal that she has to set for herself. This is likely to break down to a weekly or monthly amount that she can more easily work with if she pays off a set amount every month based on her constraints and how long she gave herself to pay it all. Mary's Final Girls, if you remember, is hard to quantify because she only wants to find the one job. It is still measurable, since she will know when she's found the job that she has been hoping for. But like with her dating life, there is no way of knowing, for example, how many interviews she must undergo or how many applications she must complete and send out. It is still important to set measurable sub goals, such as applying to at least one suitable job per week. So as you can see, the measure ability, Criterion is quite a straightforward one to apply. If you use the three prime questions, if it's least one of those questions is not in principle answerable, it's means that you have set an impossible or unreasonable girl and you'll need to go back and re thinking.
