About This Class

Hi there! I'm Kate Amedeo. I am an artist and an illustrator and in this class, I will show you how to sketch painterly animal portraits. We will create painterly artwork of different animals, from cats and dogs to tigers, fishes and birds in one hour or less, thus - Sketching Animals :)

If you have never tried your hand at soft pastels I have another class here on Skillshare that will guide you through the basics. After completing the Soft Pastels for Beginners I will be happy to see you in this class.

Every week I will be adding a new animal to the tutorial here. We will go through all the stages of the artwork, from color selection to drawing, layering and adding color.

1. Intro to Sketching Animals: Hi there. I'm caked on the dale. I am an illustrator. And the night test? In this class I will show you how to sketch animals and soft pastels. We will be doing different animals in different breeds from horses to dogs, cats, tigers, birds, fish and so on. I will teach you how to sketch an animal so that it represents the likeness within a Knauer . You will not have to spend Asian please on one thing and you will have a beautiful painterly result. As you progress through the glass to hang on the wall I will be doing and you lessen the three weeks you can stay tuned and follow me. Ginger kitten: Choosing the colors: So before we start Coward Kitten, I want first to select the colors that I will be using for the kitten for its coat and for its eyes. So I have the same paper here. This is canceled Mittens the reverse side, and this is just a scrap sheet that I killed will test my colors on. So the colors that I chose for this gettin I will go from the lightest says, is the very light yellow. Then I have a slightly more lemony yellow from the movement you a warm yellow, two more kind of peachy orange and from there into these more intense oranges and even into Brown's. So I will see if I use a cooler or warmer brown here and for the eyes will be on adding also this green so you can see it's kind of a dial down cream. Also, I might add some pinks just a bit into the years, but I will also tell these down it's safe of this one over the top. So it's not just think big, think have to be careful with that, and then I will be using some pastel pencils and, um, looking at how my kitten is so I think for these colors, this is quite enough to start off. And then if I need something else, I will have other colors to it. But this is my main palette. I'm gonna take these away, put them in a dish. Also, it's very handy to keep a spare sheet of paper just to test out the colors before you actually put them on the paper. So let's put this away now, always cleaning my hands. I have a clean tissue handy constantly, and now I will take a pencil and I will use a color that will not be very not contrast in color to the bigger. Also, I wanted to talk about this yellow. Here, you can see that this yellow here it blends in almost with the paper. So it's very good to actually create these smooth transitions into the background, because for this kitchen we will not be painting a background. We will kind of blend it out into the background 3. Ginger kitten: Sketch: So now how do we start? We're drawing first. I will map out where my kittens going to be. So I want the head to be in focus. This is going to be roughly my head. Then he goes kind of a sent here and it looks to me a kind of a munchkin kitten, to be honest, because he has very short pause. I see that there is a fall here and this part we will fade it out. So here, with the face, let's start with feast. I see that there is a cheek here and the cheeks in the skull that the bones the during this call under the eyes, they will be symmetrical on both sides. Some critical line here. Almost straight. I'm going to go and have those lights always in the direction of the for. So I'm going around those lights here because I want to save these little places around the eyes. Now I'm gonna go in my we don't value. This is going to be PCI kind of kitten. And I'm adding those strokes in the direction of the for growth. Sorry for those. We have many ambulances going around today. So, in the direction of for growth, I'm adding the strokes off my orange. This isn't cheap. And I'm looking at weird that orange is actually present on the kitten on its face. But here now, with a darker This is the almost the darkest one. I'm gonna on those darker bits. So now we're just laying in the color. So here I see that there's this shadow as the kitten is lit from the left, it's going to have this shadow bit so here, under the chin. So remember, we're not working photo realistically, Here we are working in a sketch going away. And now with this darker orange, those marking lines when I see them just here and here in the hectares and working slightly darker here. Now how do we blend this? Pleading my hands? Well, I forgot to add my browns also here, dark browns in the year never let. Also, the pink on top of that dark brown don't worry is like in the money of the color. Also some orange just so that doesn't seem that pink. So now how do we started lending from the lights? I'm moving in the direction. Be careful not to go over in the direction of the for growth. So the cats they have there for going this way around the eyes and here that grows from the nose towards fading attention to how the fur grows. And here we have this dark area. I'm trying to blend in any depth smoothly into the paper, so I'm not leaving any texture yet. You can see already. It's kind of becoming a three d kitten here. I'm cleaning constantly my fingers because I don't want my light colors contaminated by my dark ones. You can see that here, The white of the paper, like the color of the papers Actually very handy for us. I'm trying to blend it out to smoothly as I can Way Don't need the name they re texture. Yet here by the year I'm careful not to drag out too much into the surface of the paper. And I forgot to add my oranges on this. Here, here, Here we go. Forgot it. So it's but more contrast in here. Blend and dole out. You can see already that we have this kind of a three d feel to the kitten. He doesn't seem us flat, but as he had these I like it is because they have these little hairs poking out and they looked extra fluffy 5. Ginger kitten 2: very carefully blending in recent years. So some fluff on this check here, but not too much. So now we need a completely smooth blend of everything. And here we're gonna add a bit of darkness at the bottom here, too. Where the whole kind of creates that shadows. Anything. What do we do here? Here? I wanted to kind of blend into the background. I'm going to have a light background color and blended in together without working singly. I'm gonna do here with background. It could force it to mix with our darks on Blended out. So this is our first leader? No, What we need to do is having more colors and blending. So we will be blending quite a lot in this editorial because I wanted to feel like he's very fluffy, kind of a very fluffy calf, but to have a feel of a very, very fluffy cat, even fluffier than he is on the actual photo. So, no, I'm gonna add more white lights. I'm gonna go with this latest color. Making sure that the best pastel is cleaned can rub it against another sheet of paper just on the side of your board. So I'm adding those whites and I see that there's this corner that is quite bright here and the edge of this I also the edge of this year. We haven't quite right. I'm not worried about those here. Stoke. There's lighter part here. No, let's work on the other constantly using the best elements sides, using it on the tip, just using it on its side. This is gonna give us that sketch look. And I really love how pastels look very similar to the movements of oil paint. So this is our second I. So we have some writer hairs here. So this is what's gonna give us that three d feel. So here the light hits our cat on it goes all the way above the shadow here again, lending it out. I don't want it to look Chalky at the moment. And then I think I need one more color. And this is this color here just kind of more pinkish round. I'm gonna intensify this shadow here. Sure, you discolor thistle. Additional color that I added. And God Cem yellow to it. Not too much. Doesn't look too. Yeah, well, but just enough to create the difference between these two plains. So now I'm gonna take my dark again. Then they create for these more extras strokes here and then over the top, I will be going with my dark brown spark of the faces darker as well. So let's out this year, the shape of this year. I'm using the same brown. So the best advice that I could give you when using pastels is use a limited palate off colors. I'm creating this nostril here and adding a bit shadow outside of the nose. Now I want to be using my, um, break yellow to have the link to the I hear the bottom and also here. I'm constantly looking at both eyes, so I'm gonna be in both eyes at the same time, so they don't look different. And on top of that, I'm going to add this yellow that we used for them. I didn't hear. There we go. And now I'm gonna use my green. So this is the screen actually felt. So this is this cream that I chose for the eyes. I'm gonna add it over the I trying not to lose the shape when the same thing goes here, going over grating that shape. So how do we get that three d feel in the eye? It's very simple. And also in here, mental people and the lower part As the latest hitting the kitten from the top left, the lower part is going to be lighter. It has to do with how the cornea is built in light and how the eye is actually shaped. So I'm gonna take a color shaper can use a paper. So here we come way you can see already that the eyes becoming kind of a three d shape. So now I'm going back, going back with my pencils, and I'm gonna, like, just area here just so that I shape it out better. And now with my black, choose a black 8. Ginger kitten 5: still pencil charcoal pencils, but for this is better to use. Stone is going to be darker. I'm going to shape out that people better on top of my brown. Those are barking up a bit. This corner here and the same for these people. I'm constantly looking at the shape that I have in my reference. Follow now was a dark green, this darker, grassy green in the eyes. Well, I'm gonna correct the shape of the people and with darker brown. Actually, I'm gonna even use black here over the top. It's gonna mix with the colors creating that shadow on die off the island that the island casts on our eyeball. So there's this dark orbit here from the corner and road at the bottom of the I. This will the same here in this corner as the Robert Lindus casting a shadow. It's going to be darker and here in the corner as well. Now we need to do is at the highlight in the way that our I scenes around. I don't like this much much, so we're kind of sculpting this kid 9. Ginger kitten 6: to fix the shape of this here, Just drag out the hair's a bit and the markings she backer marking on the side of the nose . It was a dark brown.
