About This Class

Hi there! I'm Kate Amedeo. I am an artist and an illustrator and in this class, I will show you how to sketch painterly animal portraits. We will create painterly artwork of different animals, from cats and dogs to tigers, fishes and birds in one hour or less, thus - Sketching Animals :)

If you have never tried your hand at soft pastels I have another class here on Skillshare that will guide you through the basics. After completing the Soft Pastels for Beginners I will be happy to see you in this class.

Every week I will be adding a new animal to the tutorial here. We will go through all the stages of the artwork, from color selection to drawing, layering and adding color.

1. Part 1: Hi there. And welcome to today's tutorial. So we will be drawing very cute little kitten. And I have, um, prepared already the bigger here. So I have this, uh, Councilman Tom paper. This is the flannel grade that I'm using always. And I will be doing this catch with charcoal pencil. There went Give it a clean on and you can use any charcoal pencil, or you can even use charcoal stick. I have one here. Depends what you prefer. And I will start first with actually again like it where I have how I want to position him on my sheet of paper. So this is the reverse side of the paper, as usual, because it's smoother, and it's not going to show that texture on the far. Because otherwise, if we were to use the truck, more textured side, it would show is the texture of the paper in the for And it would kind of take away from the fluffy nous. So what? I'm gonna do its first. I'm looking at this kitten, and I chose this picture on purpose because it has a very simple kind of position of the head, so we don't have any perspective for shortening in the image. I see that his head is kind of a ball shaped. I'm just blocking and where I want my cats had to be, and I'm not going to do all of the image, basket and everything. I'll just indicate that there's more for happening here and that's it. What I'm looking at now is I'm trying to find the center line of my cat's head. Then I'm adding where my nose is going to be roughly here. Very important is to place those features right. If you're not very sure about drawing the cat, then maybe you can trace the image on. Just follow me with a trace damage, which is going to work to. So I am placing his eyes in accordance with the nose, and I'm not drawing the eyes roamed. They're not around their kind of al Mundy shaped placing in. The people here kind of look sad here, but it's OK, so leasing the other. I've so looking at the location this I compared to the nose. One more thing that might help if you are not very sure, and not you don't have enough practice when it comes to drawing is printing out your image and putting it next to your drawing so that you can measure it immediately. This way. So place that pupil here too. Then we see that there's this from the nose. We can trace this kind of line to the beginning off the ear. So here we will have that beer and it's not a simple triangles will pay attention to the shape of the year. So this is one year, and here again, I'm tracing that line to see where that here is located. We will also pay attention to how the markings are located on our cats. So they cast. They have these brows that are very defined. And if you look at it, there's kind of a letter m shaping on his forehead. So we're going to be drawing that in, and then they have these markings that go like so Okay, so this is my kitten and just going to his head slightly smaller here. Then there is the fluffy part over here 2. Part 2: Now we can continue and add the color. So have different lights and darks here and I will be putting them on the paper and seeing what I want in my cat. Definitely what I need here. Cast all that is the same color off the paper. Here I have this gray that is very similar to the color of my paper so we can start with this color and this is going to be our undertone for the cat in those latest areas. So I'm looking. There's the light area here around the eye, like so I assumed face here goes above the forehead. In here. This is the closest value that I have that comes closest to my paper. So I'm adding it here and also into the ears. So when I'm working with a pastel, I always use it everywhere in my image. Now what I want to do is I want to warm. It's up, slide gate and I need something warmer. Maybe this green is going to work good. And I see that there's quite a lot on the nose here, So we need this warmer color to actually give the for a look that is not flat on the nose. Yeah, okay. And also, by the years there's this definitely this color. So the attention that I chose the paper on purpose. This paper here is very similar to the color of my cat. So I'm going to be blending into the paper. We're not going to be creating any backgrounds or will be blending into the paper to actually create. I work out. So I'm gonna have this brownish color as well into my cat over here. I'm so on the nose. So again, I'm warming it up slowly but surely I'm warming it up. I want to play also with the contrast between cools and warms here. So now we can start blending. What I'm gonna do is I'm going to have this great color, the same one that I used for my cat. I'm going to add it here for now so that I can lead it into the color of the paper. So what we're doing, and this is going to create the impression of that fluffy kitten what we're doing, We're just blending induct color. So I see that this color on the year I'm blending it here the years going to have a kind of a more definite shape than the rest of the kitten's head. And here I'm rubbing it all in the direction off the for growth. I'm completely blending it into the paper here, lending it out. So we're gonna have a very, very fluffy kitten like so next we're gonna do is I'm going to have those lighter colors and I have this like yellow, and I'm going to add it around my eyes because the cap caps they. If you've seen my video about sketching animal eyes, you will see that calf. They have these areas that are definitely later and areas that are darker. So any cat is going to have these markers markings the same that I'm going to switch into this more pinkish color. It's warm it up a bit more, actually, bullet here go so by the nose here, and we can also add it into the ear over here like so again, I'm blending it all in. I don't need any rough lines, anything. I just need to create that illusion of later for growing in those areas. I think so. You can see already his eyes are starting to glow. I was still having any, um, color almost just a bit. So I'm rubbing out those years because they're also quite fluffy. If you look at them quite the room for surrounding them now I'm going to go in with This is a slightly off white commercial. It's use a blue, this is a light blue, and let's start adding some of those blues in. So here's the mouth area that is quite latest. I'm just rubbing it in. So just tell indication there, adding this blue also in some areas of this lighter color. 3. Part 3: Now we have our lights and Midtown's kind of in place. Let's move from here. So I'm gonna do the same thing. I need to still add this same gray over here. We're my kittens kind of lying. - So I'm letting this shadow bit here, and I'm actually gonna add some of a gray violet here into the shadow, so I don't want to darken it up too much, but I want to create a kind of more interesting color. So some grays like so and now we can start building up on that firm. So I'm gonna take a color that is form, but and it's quite bright at this moment, but we're going to kind of dial it down, and I'm adding it in those warmest places that I see and rubbing it out into the for so decreed that illusion off very soft. For then I see a bit of worm pills on this side by the year here and again, I'm rubbing it in the direction off the firm and also on the nose. It's definitely this warmer where we added the pink also. Oh, and now we can move. Just get into those years here I'm just a bit just to create that interesting pattern that he has on the head here and now we're going to move into cooler colors. So I have a cooler color over here and this kind of a greenish color. And I'm going to start adding that into those darker areas greeting that letter M on adding it here on the head, on the top of the head and also on this part by the I. So what I'm gonna do again, I'm going to blend it in until kind of soft turning it. This is the initial layer for our markings. 4. Part 4: creating these kind of wispy hairs that kind of stick out from his head. That's gonna create the acuteness in the or cat and just But here, where is he? Those more kings and more definite struck here by the years and still blending it out. Then we're going to add some of this color under here into the shadow area off the kitten. And I see that there is this lying around the year that is kind of sharp. No. So here it's what I'm gonna do here. I'm gonna pull it out to create those kind of little Here's a feeling of those little hairs . So if you look at the kitten that might look that it's kind of a brownish, grayish color. But actually we're using. You can see the colors that we're using here. Quite interesting. Then we have that marking on the I. We're going to go through color here, so his eyes are not going to have like a black outline around them, only black. We're gonna go for the color like so and then under the eye on this side and also on this side, we have those markings so and now what I want to do is I want to add that for here to kind of indicate that he's lying down and I'm going to create. That was be for by rubbing it in this direction to kind of create the illusion of him lying down. And this here is going to go over and take my green back here just a bit to pull it over and you can see the I would give this kind of slightly turned towards us. 5. Part 5: Now we can go into darker colors, and I am going to go for blues Blue grays. So I want to play with this school and more, um, color. So this is a blue gray, and I'm going to on those markings here, like so and all those darker areas, like so also here and so And then we will working up also this time creating those kind of whisky hairs over here. Okay, so now I'm gonna robert out slightly also here. So what we're doing first is where kind of blending everything, and then we will have more definite marks. She actually give some sharpness to the image. So we're building up slowly still have to finish the years. Okay. And I think I went into much over here I can do is I can brush off this past hour with a sponge. Okay, Now we can start adding some darker color dark brown to create. It was more definite marks. I went too far here. Think so. And here with the markings, we need to be careful to place them where we want them. I'm going to slightly from this away, like, so I'm going to place those markings even harder in here. So to greet those more definite strokes where I see them here, we need to slightly legend it up. I went in too much. I'm gonna take my bank. No, just a bit of the bank over the top here to bring in that light back. Okay. And then we can go in with this green that we used to bring in those lightest colors. And also with this I think I want you That's over. And easier years. We're here the same way over here. So there's this definite like to hear you. I'm gonna clean my hands just smooth, smooth in it. And likely I think so. And maybe we cannot solve this gingery color here cause it looks to flat otherwise. 6. Part 6: Okay, now I'm going back to my dark Rome. I'm going to start adding those marks around the eyes that I see. So there's this darker area around the eye and I'm just sketching it in lately, adding that mark here when I see that there's one here by this year and also some of those darker markings here. What I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna bulldoze out, like so often here by the I. We have this marking that is also definite. I'm just gonna go in here and sharpen those markings here. The m letter that we have. I'm gonna sharpen that like so then reach this tear duct bit and we're going to finish adding this over here Dairy Go. I know. So this will just pull it out to create kind of a It was the effect. So here we have that I gonna just slightly the john it and justice, like touch under the eye here where we see that marking over here. Just likely. And you can see how we are building up with those colors, how they interact with each other and create that beautiful, warm and cool effect. I'm gonna go back to my green. I'm going to add a touch of the screen just to increase the contrast over here. There, you see, I don't so over here. And I'm working constantly on the side of my pastel. Not working. I'm not working with the tip. Adding a bit of thes here's here just to darken it up slightly. Is this area here is likely darker, like so when we do the same thing for the other side. So here we have the definite mark going over this area here because I want to create more kind of taking away the past. I'll here, In between these strokes conduct with a sponge or with neither research, we're gonna pull it out again. This kind of wispy remove moles. 7. Part 7: I think so. Just self turning it into the paper. Okay, Next. Going over. She is soft, turning it in and again creating that I deduct softening the tear duct. And then we have these kind of darker areas here. I'm just gonna pull it when it goat knows. And I think I'm gonna add a bit of this green color. Great green sheer. So that is done. Next, let's pose into this side and I muddy this marking by the I. And there's all of this darker color here as well. And also under the eye over here, just a bit. Just a touch. And then it kind of blends into this cat like differ on his back. Some of this here cleaning my finger all the time, the shape of his eyes like so. And then I see that on the nose. Let's read that sketch in the nose and I'm using the same pastel that I'm using for my darks. And then we will pass with pinkish colors over the top London. Here it's slightly darker, like so just looking at those markings where we had them. And here I'm rubbing everything in the direction of the for growth here, I'm gonna lead it into the transparent layer 8. Part 8: pull these. Here's I don't talk like so there we go and see that here. I'm working out because great Bram over here and here. This for kind of blends together. So he's lying down over here. We cannot some great blues here, So after hours, greens, since in places. And if I went too far in here and can always soft in it like so and then go over again with this brown So we're kind of creating the for texture and here kind of darkens. Also, there's the shadow of the cheek. So and what I'm gonna do is because I have this bit 30. I'm going to create this here, going backwards. Like so with the kneaded eraser in the race, The stuff on here. So we have the clean background. Okay, Now what we need to do is I want to have some of those ginger colors. I'm going to warm up the nose here like so So he's looking kind of warmer reading this color over here and just a bit like so And also in the years, just likely that I'm gonna take my think and then this pink into the ear and rub it out slightly, and this one we can pull it out to create those can a Harry effect on the year here we have the the phones went too far in. So here we have that Harry end of the year that is kind of highlighted. And look at that immediately. It comes to life here. There's that was a bit of hair two standing. It's likely was the pastel and blending it in to create the impression that it's not just a number here by itself, but it's a strand of here. Okay, so and now want to darken it up with maybe something violent, this one, just to darken it up from the inside, like so okay. And also use this violence on the mouth here and maybe just a bit over here just to have more color, okay. And I'm gonna take a brown colors. Wonder we use the light brown. Just add that shadow that in the year to kind of give it the dimension I know. Some decide. I see there's this shadow bed, like so smoothing it out softly 9. Part 9: I'm adding the lights now. So for the lights, I'm going to be using this pale yellow. So I have one yellow that is this color, and I'm gonna add it in some places where our pink is both on some places around the eye and just a touch or two here, like so. Then I want to add this darker yellow from the ear, the inside, just to give that impression of a hairy edge of the year. So here, just the change with the pastel and also here insulting it. Some of this yellow on the nose here. Okay. And now we're going in with the light test yellow, and I'm going to add those more definite marks, like so. And this immediately makes our cat size glow No. So So here. What I'm gonna do now is I think I'm gonna it. Sorry, I'm gonna use this light is the same color, but it's harder. Pastel chalk going to have a bit of these hairs. Just an indication. And soft and, um, at the bottom depression off hairs on my cat. The same thing goes here also, if you notice cat's ears, they are slightly hairy, especially when they're kittens. So I'm just adding those strokes around here and against often ing at the bottom here. And I think what I wanna do. You wanna intensified this color here? We won't touch it anymore. So I'm not gonna blend it in just so we can have a bit of textures we'll show me through, like so. So past Dallas is basically if you look at them, they're kind of a game between going back and forth between lights and darks. So you have your light when you have the dark, you had your light again and you go back to the dark. Basically, we're going back and forth, and this time I want to leave the texture so that we have more interesting texture overall . Now we're can't. So it's not only like everything is blended smoothly, so okay. And because of the layers that we built gradually, it doesn't look flat. Okay. And here we can had the darker color, so okay, and now we get to the tastiest bit. I'm just in a bit of this green on the lighter green over here, because I just really want out that color there. No. So here is it? There's this brighter patch. I think so. And now we can start adding those final details. And this is, um, charcoal stick to compress circle. I'm going to add the indication of the mouth and that's it. And don't want you at too much detail here. Just start can in it slightly. And that's what I don't want to go and draw out each and every year of the mouth. The only thing is that I need to lighten it up slightly and going to go on with this green first and then add something like our own top. And I think I'm gonna go in with this yellow, like so. Okay, Andi, we're going in again with lighter yellows. There's this lighter bit over here on his whiskers. Here, you Let's on those eyes 10. Part 10: so for the eyes, I want to use the same green that I used in Differ. I'm going to covered the area off the I. We're not gonna go brush is about it. Just gonna given indication of those eyes. Then I will let some off the yellow work color. This is this kind of yellowish color. Still liven it up a bit. Here, the Parton's the eyes of the bottom of the eyes. And I'm going to add something later over here on this edge just to create that, but shining into the eye like so and now with the charcoal stick, I'm going to bring in that sharpness into the eye itself. You can also use a pencil for this, like so I'm gonna go on carb Othello pencils. It's going to be easier and sharpened this up like so I'm going to slightly dark in the stop area where the I kind of cast a shadow and the same thing I'm doing here. I'm adding that beautiful. There's a bit of a shadows drawing that 10 adding the outline of the I like so and now we can, uh, like reflects with light blue amounting that light in the are like so can sit in this light blue on the whiskers Here's well and what we need to do now I'm just gonna correct the shape of this. People don't like it. So this one like So now what we're lacking is it's blended out over here, So where are doesn't look too stark. So we have the area of the skin around the ah, here. You can show that just blending in with the pencil, and then I'm going to add some thinks for the nose. And actually, I'm gonna end this ginger Bry with some of the pink that I hade used already to create that kind of impression off the nose and with the pencil, I'm going to create that shape of the nostril here. The split. So here, I'm going to at the tear duct. Bit obits likely. And I think our cat it's almost ready. Always. I'm gonna have some of that violent top of the nose here. Just gonna fix about the shape of the eye here. Gonna darken it up with this pastel stick. The gray. So with past trials, the amazing thing is that you can always correct your shit I'm gonna use with pastel stick and you cannot any color, even blues just gonna use white And you need a sharper pastel stick and tap away Does, um, areas where it kind of grows out off. Just adding a bit of strokes here, like so to indicate the witness circles. And then here we have those whiskers also not gonna be drawing each and every single whisker. Just going to create a sense of these words. Girls here. Okay. And our little getting is already You can definitely follow the tutorial where you can sketch your own little kitten. Just fixing this shapes here. Thanks. And I think we're golden.
