Your project: Hello and welcome to this class. Here is your project. You have to make three different pictures. First option. You take the same page with the same props, but you just arrange them in different ways so you can see which one is more pleasing to you. There I propose you three different options with the same props on the same page. Second option. You take one single picture, but you just at different filters on the same picture so you can see the various moods and effects you can achieve with this up A will discuss later in the class third option, you take three different pictures of different pages with different props on different backgrounds. Just feel free to use whichever you prefer in this re options. When you have made your pictures, please post them in the project section in the class so we can all see it. Next video will talk about equipment. See you in the next video 3. Equipment: Hello and welcome to this class. In this first lesson, we're gonna talk about equipment. As I said in the introduction, you don't need a very fancy equipment. Just a smartphone are on, I bet probe. I've shown you three different devices taking the same picture as you can see the woman to write as really bright and vivid colors. And maybe the one on the left is a little bit less light than in the iPad Pro picture. I bet Pro or iPhone take exactly the same pictures anyway, No matter what is your device, you can just adjust after with filters on the apple. Show you later. Here is my kind off installation. Everything is put on the table. I'll explain later as the two sketchbooks and I'm just standing behind the table, so I'm not making any shadow on the table. The thing that is really important is you have to get your device really parallel to the table or you'll have a distortion on your sketchbook. Here, I show you in detail how are installed everything. So I put a background here. It's a wallpaper on top of it. I put my two sketchbooks held by clumps and elastic boned All my stuff, my sketchbook, my props. And here is how I take my picture. Actually, the main problem when you want to take pictures of sketchbooks are some kind of sketchbooks of pages that wont stay flats. So you have different options to have your pages stay still while you make your picture. First of all, a clamp. Okay, Is this one is not really nice, so I won't use it. And most of all, you need to take a lot, lot of pages together. This one is ah, little clump I use often because I hide it was a prop based on it. What I use most is the reusable sticky gum. And you have to put it on the page just below the one. You want to stay flats and press firmly now just opening again. So you have to do this on the page under and sometimes you have to put 3456 pages together , so it stays finally flat. There are needed to put in ST different pages. Very important. Also, don't let it sit too long on your sketchbook or you'll have trouble after. So once the pictures took, just remove it and that's it. Next video, we'll talk about the light 4. Light: Welcome back in this lesson will talk about lights. There's always a debate about natural or artificial light here. It's a picture I took in. Let's say good conditions. The weather is fine, not too sunny, not too grey. And there is no direct lights on the sketchbook here. It's the same picture that shot at the evening leaving and you see the light is really very different. It can be something that you want to get used off. If this is your mood or what you want to achieve in your look of your pictures, I'll let you decide about this. You can also use the light if it's on purpose. Here I have the light behind the curtained is and I thought gave a nice effect. Not too shady, though. So very interesting. Maybe you can use it. What is important is to have the same lights all over your sketchbook and props. For this. I will use my two white sketchbooks that I put standing held by clump in the middle so it can reflect the white light on the subject. I am taking the picture off. I want to show you from Franz Ho. It's installed I have two different sketchbooks of one on the right as an elastic band. So I don't need another clamp. And clams are here to about the page or folding in the middle of my picture. This is why I use it. Plus, it gives me the right size for the square for my time. One for my pictures. Here it's raining from above was everything inside. And you see, the white paper is reflecting the light on the sketchbook. So the bottom of the picture will have a nice gray almost as the same other top of the picture here. You can see once that picture is took, you haven't even light almost the same everywhere. And most of all, the white paper is really popping out the background just to show you this is the exact same props and sketchbook. I just remove the white sketchbook that was reflecting the lights. So obviously you can already tell that the white be as bright as in the previous picture. Here is a result. It's not really so disturbing. Maybe you can just say that's okay for me. What I don't like is a shadow under the pencils at the bottom of the picture. I think it's too dark, but you just do as you wish here. It's the same picture on the left. You don't have the white sketchbooks and on the rights you have the white sketchbooks. I think it's better that, as always, just a matter of taste. Maybe you just don't need to use them. It really depends on the lights outside the weather. Is it cloudy or nights? And if you're lucky enough to have a garden, maybe you can go outside directly and take a picture just putting your sketchbook in the garden. And if you don't have a gyrate son on it, it would be nice. You can also decide to use CERN on purpose. So on the left, I wanted the reflection of the glasses on this sketchbook. But on the right, obviously it's really right. Next video will talk about backgrounds where to find them. See you 5. Background : Welcome back. We'll talk about backgrounds. Obviously, it's an important part of a picture. First of all, you're gonna look about floors or around you on the left, it somewhere in my living room and on the right it in a bedroom upstairs. And if you put exactly the same props on the same page of the sketchbook on different backgrounds, you can see that you have different effects on the left. You have a shiny effect with the lights that you don't have. Obviously, on the right picture, choose which one you prefer on the left. Here it's a pavement outside in the garden on I thought it was suitable with the content of the page on the rights. It's a blanket somewhere. So the blanket itself is okay, and I think it fits very well with the hair of the pencils. But it was really nothing related to the content of the sketchbook page. So they say something you have to think about also is matching the background with the page . Maybe it might be interesting here. It's the same carpet, and you just see that I just rotated the stuff on it. I personally would prefer the left one. I think the line direction is much better with this catch book on the right. I think it's quite disturbing to see that lines going across. But maybe you like better the right one, Really, as always, just a matter of taste. Also, you can just go outside fortress kitchen from the rest and on the left, it's, Ah, piece of wallpaper. My deal for this last was not to buy anything, so I went to my attic and found some leftover off wallpaper. You can also use a wrapping paper that have really interesting ones you can use as background. The only thing is, you don't want your paper to be too busy. Another thing. I use our fabrics. Years ago, I used to make quitting and hound I my own fabrics, so I have really a lot of it left. Maybe on the left picture. It's a bit too busy, too much colors and on the right. I prefer it because I think the green of the fabric is really matching. Well, the sea green on the sketchbook page. Same thing. One page to backgrounds. The fabric of the left is a bit too busy. I think, and on the right, I used on almost plain bej fabric and at it some leaves of the bamboo leaves. I thought it would much really well with sketchbook, but I'm not really satisfied with neither of those pictures. I think I did something else. Fabric still, but not flats just randomly placed or almost randomly, of course. And I think it gives a nice effect, especially the linen on the rights. It gives very soft edges with the lights on. And I thought it would really be suitable with the pages with the colors off the pages. Although I like the left one also here. It's the same props, different backgrounds on the right. It's wallpaper on the left. It's a corkboard that I took to my Children. I know by mother and you see, I think the keys are much TV to see on the right. But I don't like the color of the background. I think it gives the white paper a great tone. I don't like it. I think it's better on the left, and lastly, sometimes it's really too busy. This is a wallpaper also, and I thought the colors would be really cool with a sketchbook. But really the prince flowers are too large. So be aware of this. When you choose your background not to use something to be the two large. That would distract if you were from your sketchbook. After all, this is what you want to see. I'm not the background. Next video. We'll talk about props. Another important part of the pictures. See you. 6. Composition : composition. You can consider each picture as a frame, depending on the size of your sketchbook. Whether it's on portrait mode or landscape mode here, it's a landscape mode you can place. It's a different levels in the square. Or you can put it in the bag. No, and so you have something left all around to put your props and stuff. It might be tricky. One. It's a trainer like this to put stuff inside. Think about it. If you have ah, portrait size, it will give something larger in the frame so you'll be more constrained by the size of your sketchbook, and it leaves less space for the stuff around. Some example. If you put this sketchbook in the middle, you can add different things around, and you can compose it with colors. Here it's agreeing up and the blue down. In the last picture, I added box off brush pounds and here again, just the same. But the Dagano or was props and I'm in the pencils here that are straight. If you have a square sketchbook and you want to take only one side of the sketchbook in the picture, what you can do is hide the other page with your watercolor palette, as I did here. And the square page will fit perfectly in the square format of the picture. You can also use hands to hold the sketchbook. In this case, of course, you need someone else to take the picture for you. And sometimes they don't understand what you really want to do. Never mind just some ideas off course. You can always talk about the rule of third and everything else. But I tried to. Kipps is very simple. Just make as you wish. See you in the next video. We'll talk about props. 7. Props: Perhaps if you say something really important to have a nice, big truth, basically, you have two different ways to do this. On the left, you try to match the colors inside the sketchbook and on the right, you can try too much the content of the sketchbook. It's not always easy. It depends, really on what's on your sketchbooks. Pages on the right, a used seashells I found on the beach and in different pages. I also used seashells. As you can see on the left, it's not really matching the content, so I think there is no point using this for this particular page on the right. It's OK, but the background is a bit too busy. I've talked about this earlier here. I used only art supplies. I'm sure you heard this around you and some tips. Useful is to let some color in the water. Couple it. So it's nice here on the left. It doesn't really much well with the sketchbook page on the right, I added. A nice glass on Delights is shining through very nicely, I think here I tried to make the content on the page on the left. It's playing cards obviously. So it's very easy to read Felts pencils to add the spot off color and on the right. I thought it would be fun to use us something to make history as it is a vanilla insight, but I'm not really convinced with the result here on the left, it's dining room we had in an hotel in Prag, and there was a lot of clocks around, so I used some stuff from I took from my mom's. She's doing mixed media and she has a lot off strange stuff. That's all I can say about it on the right drew a collection of rum bottles, so I thought it would be fun to use. Ah, but ALS also for the picture and some nice little glass with the sun shining through. I like this one here exactly what I thought would be a good idea, but is really not eight's a light background, the fabric printed with clouds and sky, and I use bone believes I took in my garden. But don't tell my husband, and then I put them on just around the sketchbook. But Marina country instead, I'm not really happy with those pages here. It was a bad idea is a red background. It's really too bright, and it's really eating the sketchbook. I think as there was so much Carlos, I saw that maybe something very playful and colorful would be found, so I used some wooden numbers ahead. Not so happy with this one. Also on the right, I used on my collection of brush spend at least a part of it, and I tried to use only matching colors with the content of this sketchbook. This one. I like it much. Maybe to be true trade for me, but it's okay here. It's the same page of kitsch book, but do different backgrounds and different stuff around. I didn't really know what to use with this drawing. It's really specific, and I think I like much the right picture because I like the lights on the tiny metal stuff here again, the same page two different backgrounds on only art supplies to put around his sketchbook. Here it's exactly the same. Adjust adage, less of water. I think it complements beautifully the frame on the composition, so maybe I will use it, and here it's the same. Almost. I just change some stuff on the left. There is a pellet, but I think it's a bit too dark for the page of the sketchbook and on the right, some little stuff I took from mom again. And I think it's nice with the beach. Well, that's it's for my inspiration. As I said before, my goal was not to buy anything for this class. In the next video, I'll show you some inspiration I gathered for you. See you into next video. 8. Inspiration : The success of flat light picture relies a lot on the kind of props you put around, so I have gathered some inspiration for you. Maybe you have different items, and certainly you do have different items, and I do, and you can actually very different looks if you use different props. I have included the name of the owner of the picture on top of them, so you can maybe search for it on Instagram if you want to. Here it's a very light and airy kind of pictures. Here it's, Ah, mood very darker. Maybe she used a filter, I think, and the light is kind off, not directly on the pages. She adds a lot off stuff to give different effects with different fabrics. Fabrics gives a nice effect with the light. It's interesting here we have another example with the very well known picture took from a phone. Obviously, you need to devices to take this kind of picture on. You need an assistant to help you take the picture on the rights. I don't know if you can see it, but she used her cat just ahead of the cat, looking at the sketchbook and it's matching the content of the sketchbook. It's quite funny. Just you need to have a cat and a friendly one. Of course, here you have someone working mostly with lettering on the left, and she mimicked like she waas painting of decisions not, but this is for the sake of the picture, a little laptop in it, on the rights. It's more the colors that I looked to match together, Um, a book cover on the right of the picture here in the another example was lettering, and you can add your hand and the picture if you wish. The natives are fun on the left, and the nays are matching the color of the picture on the right. All right, personally, don't like my hands. So this is why I don't include them in the picture. Here you have two different moods. The one on the left is very dark, and as you can see, she has a nice hand. Should be a metal hand very heavy, and it helps her to keep her pages flats on the right. See, just use clips. They're very nice, and obviously she has a huge collection of washi tapes. Maybe the pages a bit true of a crowded for me. I don't know. I let you decide. Here you have a very famous artist on the left. On it just added is ah, art supplies around. The beauty of the picture comes from the beauty of the pages, of course. And on the right, she tried to match the content of the page with flowers dried and fresh flowers all around . It gives a nice effect, I think here a very harmonious mood. It's the same person on if you scroll through her feet. You see that she has almost always the same colors in her pages. She had a lot of stuff all around, Depending really, as your rule off your collection. It was just a sample of what you can't find online. If use type sketchbook flatly picture. Maybe you can get more ideas in the next video. We'll talk about shooting, so it's taking the picture itself to you. 9. Shooting: Okay. Now we have gathered everything you need from background props. You found the right place with right lights. You added your sketchbooks with clams to hold them. And now all you have to do is down behind the table and have your device really parallel to the table. This is really very, very important. If you don't do this exactly parallel to the table, you'll have a distortion on the sketchbook. As you can see here, of course, I have slightly exaggerated and you can see on the left the device waas um Diagne oh, to the table. So it gives something like a trapeze, and on the right, it's more like seen from behind. And it can be interesting also, but it's not right. It's meant in this class, so just try to be really prevalent. Also, another interesting tip is to focus on one part of the drawing you can on your screen either a smart phone or the iPad. Just press with your finger in the zone. You want to have the focus on it, so if you press in the black area, you'll have some seeing lights. And if you press in the yellow area, you'll have something more contrasted and more dark for the black. Very interesting. Basically, this is all you need to know for shooting. It's really not complicated at all. So just go on now and go to the next video, which is about editing. See you. 10. Editing: Okay, let's say you have to call your pictures, and now you're going to edit them just to show you what you can achieve with a filter on some basic ups to change your pictures. On the left, you have the natural picture and on the right, I did a filter in an apple talk you about later cold snap seed. You can go further. You can add more focus on one part of the design, and are the frame around the picture always in snap seed? Of course, if you use another up, please feel free to use it. I'm just talking about this one because I think it's really complete. One. Same again. The natural picture on the left and a bit twisted underwrites off course. You can decide that you put her to use always natural pictures. In this case, just get this. Listen and that's okay here. Another example. I think the left one is really cool. It's OK, but I think the rights picture is a bit more popping out, and I like the blur effect on the brain cells that I added. So let's go all right to go to the APP store or to Google. Play on Download the app cold snap seed. It's a free one toe. No problem. One you have done loaded it. Just go to the fight where it is on press on. The icon was a little leave and then you tap anywhere in the up to open from your device you chose where you have put your picture. You can scroll down through your flights and OK, I have a lot of pictures. As you can see working on this class, it's a ton of pictures. Okay, time to select it. Obviously I'm trying to show you all my pictures. Okay, here it is. On the right side, you have different effects that you can just press on it and see what it looks like. It was portrait. Now it's smooth. Now I'll try Pop, you can also use accentuate and you have different levels. And if you click on the pencil, you have another type of things appearing. I like to use the blur effect. You can move the part of the picture that is more focused, and you can also adjust the level of blurriness. I like to had something around 30 for blur. If you use too much, You see, It's really too blurry. Forces just swipe your finger on the screen from left to right. As always, this kind of ups need to play with it so you can find what is correct for you. All right. So once you found something you like, I like this one. I think you can also add a frame on. You have ready made frames that you can't see below to be kit. But we do. I'm sorry. I like to use this one. I think it gives a nice effect. And now you can either say the picture or save a copy. As you wish. So here is the result on the left. The original one on the right is a twisted one. If you're posting on Instagram and you want a cohesive look of your instagram feed, maybe it's interesting to always use the same filter on the same frame. So you have something more consistent off course. You just do as you prefer. And that it I think we're done. So last video will be my final thoughts to you. 11. Outro: Well, this is the end of this guess. I hope you enjoy it. Following it. As much as I enjoy making it, please post your pictures in the project section of the class. And if you have any questions just in the comment section on, if you like to please follow me on Instagram. And I'm really excited to see what you have to do with this. See you. I'm already working on the 3rd 1
