Welcome to the Sketchbook everyday Series of courses.

In this fifth course, you will learn how to draw and paint three different flowers using watercolors.


My name is Mandar, a Fine Artist, and a sculptor. I will be leading you through this course.

I've designed this course for the artist in you who wants to improve your art but has limited time to practice. SketchBook is your best place to practice and hone your skills. It’s your private space; and your aim here is not to produce a gallery ready painting but to try out new things, have fun and improve your art.

In this course, we will draw and shade 3 different flowers to do complete value studies and then draw and paint the flowers with watercolors. By doing sketches like this every day you will learn to draw things in a simplistic manner, understand the light & shade; and gain the confidence to use watercolors more effectively. Painting like this will give you the joy and satisfaction of creating something beautiful every time.

This method of painting gives best results and improves artistic confidence very quickly.

This way of practicing is great for people who want to do something creative every day and also for those who want to pursue art or illustration as a career. You will see every line that I draw, every brush stroke that I make and I'll also be talking to you about my process.

This series of courses is for you if you want to improve your art and are willing to practice art-making for at least 15 minutes every day. It doesn't matter if you are a student, a professional, a homemaker or a retired person. No prior art making experience is necessary to take this course. Just having the interest is enough.

1. Introduction: welcome to the sketchbook everyday series of courses. In this fifth course, you will learn how to draw and paint three different floors using more tickles. My name is Mandy are a fine artist and sculptor. I'll be leading you through this course, have designed the scores for the artist knew who wants to improve your art but has limited time to practice. Sketchbook is your best place to practice and hone your skills. It's your private space, and your aim here is not to produce art gallery really painting, but to try out new things. Have fun and improve your heart. In this course, we will draw and shared three different floors to do complete value studies and then paint these flowers with watercolors by doing sketches like this. Every day you will learn to draw things in a simplistic manner, understand the light and shade, and gained the confidence to use watercolors more effectively. Painting like this will give you the joy and satisfaction off, creating something beautiful every time. This metal of painting is best results and improves artistic confidence very quickly. This way of practising is great for people who want to do something creative every day, and also for those who want to pursue art or illustration as a career, you will see every line that I draw every blessed talk that I make, and I'll also be talking to you about my process. List of Supplies used: Let's look at the supplies even used in this course. I was sketchbook bad. You can use a smaller one or a bigger one. In this course I'm using a bigger one. Drawing and Value Study of Daisy flowers: Welcome to the lecture. In this lecture, I'll be painting a daisy flower, so I'm starting to draw the shape very, very roughly. I don't this time I'll be trying something different. I'll be doing the value study, vit one color our dark color instead of sharing the defensive. And I also want this spending Toby Ready? Lose in the sense I don't want any details. I I intend to keep it very painterly on. That's the reason I'm no drawing this floor. Very, very precisely. So this is one daisy on be drawing another daisy here on the order shape is like this for painting white floors. We have to use background color, which is dark so that the white off the paper becomes the white off the presence. Unless we want to use any pink white our wash, as it is called sometimes. I'll be using a black color because it creates highest contrast for the value study. So I'm getting some black color on my brush, and I'm repainting that with that. As you can see, I'm using flat brush on using its edge toe. Create these negative shapes off the Britons. - Since it's it's a white flower, the tradition in the values will be very less Andi. I may not actually paint the floor. It'll I might give her symbol stroke off very light green, but that's also I'm not sure I need to give it, but let's being the alkaline off both the flowers, the one flat is done going to the second floor. No, I've turned the page just to make it easier for me toe draw. These patterns are groping around these buttons. I'm turning the pace as I'm printing That gives me that makes it easy for me toe be in the presence even when I'll be painting this with color , the major emphasis will be on the airplane, and they're darks off the bag alone rather than the petals themselves. Because the petals will be white, I might add some grays toe indicated this year, but then major coloring work will be on the background itself. - On now will come in with us likely darker black in one or two areas. 1st 1 is this. Now I'm using a very dark black or big black this color and spread here because the base coat is still wet. But this is not, Ah, final painting. I'm just painting the value study, so I'm not what it too much on now will come in with very, very light. Black are green just to indicate some dimensions on the large Britain's that might be clueless. This is the underside of these Britain, so it will have some darkness be darker than the surrounding Britain's. And I just indicated some of the ideas where it is. I become some color from here because go with it. I don't mind dark color to flow into the pitons because on me, the Calix sure be in so much dark color. And now I'll come toe this flower. I think this is enough for the study on in the next lecture will be actually printing this with colors. So see you in the next lecture. 4. Painting Daisy flowers Part 1: Welcome to the lecture. In the last lecture, I painted this value study off the daisy flowers. Andi, in this lecture, I'll be drawing it again on painting it with colors. With the study, I have a fair understanding off light and darkness inside the floor are how should the values be distributed. And so I'm drawing this flat again. This is the shape of the floor, Andi. Just as in the value study lecture, I'll be keeping this Lord very, very loose. I'll be painting it in a mentally style and not as a detailed illustration. And so I'm drawing the outline, Sister Calix and the stem with something like this. And now I'm doing the other flower and slightly did in this direction. So this is the for spittle. I'm going the 2nd 1 just as I mentioned in the last lecture. Since we are drawing are painting white flour, I'll have to paint the background with some dark colored. So there the floor gets the white color off the paper on the floor would be something like this on it will have its stem going and like this Andi, this sister central part off the floor, which is yellow, where on the Bohlen are located. And now I didn't start but fainting the floor on applying some reddish green color in the background. I'll be using this just color here. I don't remember exactly what the color, but it's something like Sienna, and I'd be adding some olive green on. I want to paint the background very lightly. I can increase the darkness later on, but I don't want to do that to start with. And I'll be painting it in this direction because the background foliage will be something like this on be adding few greens in between. Just to clear some variation, I might as well use a round brush because I want to get into the details on these love. It is easier with a smaller brush. As you can see, I'm bringing the negative shape stretching back flat brush. - I'm slowly coming to the second floor, and I might want so I'm adding some blue toe the background here just as a variation. When I'm painting, I don't look at the names off the colors. You just have to see what makes sense at that time. Otherwise, the painting becomes stool. I couldn't make. Yes, you sometimes make mistakes, but then you always learn from those and improve ah, upon your ability to to scullers without thinking about their names. And it's a fact that if you get your values correct, then the colors hard lists important. And so as long as you maintain the darkness off various colors, our media shapes with respect to each other, then exact color is off. No importance. I need to speed up slightly because the first layer off calories drying up. I don't want to create any hard edges. Some yellow car. I want to award these sharp edges on also want to create an effect off the foliage. - This paper, which I'm using is 1 30 gives him on DSO. It doesn't hold that much water, so I have toe work within those limitations. If you use a ticker paper, you can keep the paper remains ticker are wet for a longer time. Andi. That way you can clear different effects much more easily. But this being a sketchbook, it's not very thick. This paper is good toe practice. Onda, hone your skills. I want tohave these streaks off color that will indicate foliage. Andi I think I'll wait for this layer to dry before I come in with the second layer and create the little saw the flowers just for the sake off completing, adding some color here. Andi, using ah tinder brushed toe, create the streaks which will indicate blades off cross. That's it. And I'll wait for this layer to dry and then coming and being the details of these flowers . 5. Painting Daisy flowers Part 2: come to lecture in the previous part Off this lecture, I painted this background off these flowers on it is dry completely on. I can now coming with begins for the flowers themselves on. I'll start with ah, bluish grief for the petals and mixing ultramarine blue and black. And I made a very, very thin gray color. And I'll be testing that on this paper here. Yes, this good for creating the shadow areas. So every painting these one side of these flowers where I am seeing this year and this petal has shade on all the surface because what we're seeing is the underside of the petal . I seem for this picture on, and this plot has this kind of pushy aid. And then I might refined the outline of the flowers later on. Depending on Howard looks after these corners are dry. Leave it on this and come, go this flower. Now you can see that the shade is on 1/3 of the total because light is coming in from here . And so wherever the battle is turning like this, I can see the shadow in this area. And for these patterns, it will be we won't be seeing the shadow on the edges, but then we'll see in these lines. Are these ups and downs in the foetal stem cells? No, it being the killings, which is, Ah, dark green color. I'm using the same color from the background. I'll be just adding much more blue and black in it. On be painting this Kellogg's and even the stem off the floor is dark as compared to the bank down. And painting this with the thinner brush on its leaving some white 80 years on owned it. And that is all that will act as Hi late. I would let this layer dry and then come back again. You know, being this stem first after drying. If this stem isn't as dark as I want, I'll come in again over it on and being with a darker color on top of it. But for now, I really evident this much darkness again. The Celtics four. This plan. Now I'm painting the negative shape off the petals here which are coming towards me. As you can see, this color has dried, but it's not as dark as I want. So I'll come in and being what it again. And I have pain this much portion completely dark so as to indicate that it is in the shadow. Same goes for this, Lawrence O. At this point in shared. And then one side will be darker because the light is coming in from here. No el pain, the yellow part which is there in the Sandra on this floor, yellow, orange, so and start with ah, yellow and then add orange towards the base. And they let these colors mix into each other to some extent. And I had that yellow patch even here. To some extent, it's not completely as much visible as in this flower, but still, I won't go indicate the central part here, though. And now I can come in with her darker color and how plain the flower wherever. It's not very clear, for example, here that I can darken the background so that these petals will be adults will be much more defined. But I also don't want to create these as patches of color. So let me spread this color around a bit. Andi, let me check their I might want to go and the new tenants here I can do some darkening of the color. I can do some sharpening up here. Also. Let me take Go, Tinker brush. I mean this. - Andi , I'm coming in again with the orange color. I are orange, red color and there are some details to this. If I see the painting as a whole, this area is taking away their attention from these flowers. So I need go dark in this area. But before that let me sharpen this. But the limit thing goes for these idea. I'm using a ticker color because I wanted these ideas to be dark so that the white color pops out on. Now I want to leave one more layer off darker color here so that it will not take away attention from these floors. It's part off how you compose the picture. Andi. He should ensure that the viewers attention demeans in the media where you wanted to be. So keeping this idea would have liked keeping this idea light would have meant that the attention is taken away from these flowers. And now you will notice the difference between the how the pending looked before painting this area dark on after I've been to that. So I think I can call. This painting has done Andi. There are several areas where you can go in much more detail in mortar color, but I intentionally wanted to keep this already painterly effect off this painting on that's out. That's the reason I've been telling so loosely. Onda, If you squint your eyes, you should be able tow No, the values off these paintings. This is black and white, so you can identify the values off. This is the darkest dark and these are the highlights which are the lightest like in these on. Similarly, these are the darkest areas. And even though these patterns have some color, these are the lightest in years. You, if you want, so still see the values in a better fashion. You should take a photograph off this painting and convert it into a black and white image . And then you will see the values properly. Thank you and see you in the next lecture. 6. Drawing and Value Study of Poppy flowers: Welcome to the lecture. I'm going to draw Poppy Flower in this lecture. So first I'll go growing with full pension. I'm going the alkaline off the floor. Really roughly. And I'm using a photograph which have been in my Pinterest board. You can refer to that when I do You want to pay and using the same photograph. These are the poppy parts and just the floor. This the stem has and the Lord is very dark. Here I'm using are six beep into to speed up the process and to get better darks. That means umi another I'm keeping this very a drop. I'm not worried too much about the accuracy are getting the exact shape because anyway, it's a plot and I don't want oh, have photographic painting At this point, there is a shadow on the stem. And then this partisan in like, born in he's on on the lettuce. Tim, - I think I have enough information in this values. Tony, give me the confidence to paint this flower without much of a problem. 7. Painting a Poppy: come to this lecture. I have drawn this poppy in the previous lecture. Andi, I did die printing it once, but I was using very take colors. Andi, that's the reason this poppy doesn't look so nice. So I'm going toe painted once again. Andi, that's a lesson which you learn in a sketchbook. This is not Ah, finally, painting we are doing this sketch is because we want to improve our art. And that's the reason I am not worried about a sketch going bad. That teaches me something. And I also want you to learn from this that this experience that not every painting which you do are every sketch that you do eyes. Ah, nice catch to be kept are to be displayed, but you have no nevertheless keep trying. And the next attempt, which you do is off course better than the previous one. So let's get started again on I'm on call. Draw this poppy again on and this time amount to keep it loose because I want to lay in colors in that I'm doing it on the same page on purpose because I want to show you that there are some drawings or paintings which you make which don't don't know, very nice. But that's not something unusual that happens with every artist, however young or old. And the whole game in art is to keep trying. So I've drawn this poppy very lightly. Andi, here is the stem and I want to draw. I will be born here. I'm going very, very likely. This part of the bumpy barred is in shadow and just for some variety m drawing another board here. This time I'm gonna go over left their stems just to give them some natural feel. So that's the drawing done on. Now I can start painting over. I'm again making my colors so that I get them whenever I want. I'm coming in with plain water and just want to read the idea so that when I lean, the color inspects easily And this time I have to remember toe apply the color very, very tingly. So here and here goes the light of their color. And I'm also noting in the color, very solidly I am leaving over a living off some ideas white, not even. I'll pick up color from the some of the 80 years I'm late in the first layer. I'm going to pick up some color. Come. Some of the ideas can use a flat brush through this more effectively. And I'd let this leered right are even I can come in with her darker color at the same time . I just mixing, undermining blue some crimson. And this ammunition did want toe and adding a bit off black in it. Go late in here. You can see that down the Langley. It is not a wet but not dry. Also on that's helping me in creating soft changes. - I'm coming in with some plain water on. I'll allow this layer to dry before I touch it again. Now I want to paint the stem, so I'm taking in some your local on mixing it with the red which I had some more red on. I want toe earned some off this color. I wanted to be a very thin color. Some green goes in Andi and when you use tin brush lane this green color and then the same color goes on the board on on the board. Also, since this is a but they will be summary picking out Oh, in this area, so I'm not going to paint that. I'm using my drawing only as a reference. I am not trying to fill in the drawing. Return me so it makes sense. Toe. Keep the drawing very light. Just when this color is still wet. I'm going to introduce some really in here so that it spreads a bit in with the green. Andi, this part off the bird or the party is insured, so I'm gonna go apply the same color. It's a more blue in it as a shadow color. This will create an impression there. This part of the see Poppy poor isn't shared. Leave it. Didn't here even some part off the stem off the main floor is in sheer on. That's what this color patch will do. Andi, I can now again come to the main flower. Now I would become Invictus. This pure red color on with slightly ticker mixture on this color is dry. So I'm gonna go apply this color in patches. And I would have preferred this underlying color to be slightly bit. But I can't do that now. Go back. So I'm using a wet brush. Could do that work. Andi let me apply some water. Very little water here so that the color doesn't create any sharp edges. No, I can come in with the red color and clean the brush. Make it dry and coming again. You start off logic. This is the battle on the other side of the floor and hence it is in light aging. It is getting light from the top, so I don't want to paint it completely. I won't even pick up some color, which is which I applied. And same is with this better. - I'll wait for this layer to dry before I touch it again. On In the meantime, I'm cleared the head like structures which are their present on these temps. So I'm coming in again with the same green color which had made I'm just mixing this color to make slightly dark on. I want to apply these random hair like structures. We turn all along the stem. You can notice that I'm not drawing. Each had really care for the m, just creating a texture which gives an impression of that. Of course, when I am drawing the same thing in this shaded area, I'm going to use our darker color because these small head also will be in shared Same goes here coming back to this color or this CD A Understand what color is dry, lighter than they are in their wet. So even though this looks so dark when it drives, it will be later And some pictures on the Bart Andi Now I can come in with even more ticker color on Apply if you dark accents here and there. Dry breasts. I run it over this patch of color so that I get this gradation on and similar treatment for the petal in light. And now coming. As I said, Don't worry if you one off your sketches goes bad, are you? Drawing and Value Study of Gokarn (Bluebellvine) Flower: I will come to this lectures in this lecture, I'll be painting Asian, pretending slower. It's also called Bluebell Wine Are blue P butterfly pea. So let's get started. I'm using again photo reference on. I'll be drawing that flower first on. I'd also be doing a value study off that using black color, you could use our dark pencil or even black ink through the same. But doing Balestra. We will give you the necessary understanding off values inside the flat. This is the vine on which the flood is growing. This is the stem, Andi. This plan has center, which is your bluish in color, but then the Britons are royal blue in color, and that's the growing on. I'll start with black color toe through the value study. This time, I won't be painting the background because this floor itself is dark. Andi. That's the reason I'm painting the Florida directly. I'm using simple black color from my watercolor set and wait for this layer to dry. Before I get into the details of this. I want the stem Coby lighter in color, and so they looted the black color, and I'm using that and I'll apply the same diluted color here. This is actually yellow in color, but for value study and we have to use good, which is this Andi. Now, since the first layer is slightly dry in this area, at least I can come in with her darker black indicate thes battles here. Monarchy, which is my mother tongue. And I think as far as the value studies concerned, I'm happy with what I have right now on in the next section. I'll be painting this floor with colors. No, I'll be drawing the floor again. I'm keeping the drying really lose because I want to paint it in a very painterly style and not very stiff, like like an illustration on here will be the central Britain. This idea will be light yellow in color where this will be blue. Andi here is the stamp on the wind and come in with a tin mixture off Colbert and are promoting Andi. Lean the first layer off the blue color. - This is where the yellow color is off the center of the floor and I'll allow this layer to dry. Can I think in some blue color here? No, I mean the it stem or the Celtics, whatever that is. And the wine. I'm just in beginning the wine with roughly not getting into the details. I also now coming and but the central area where I want to lay in the you look at her and I use lemon yellow color and spread it in here so that it spreads with the water which is making the paperwork on that. Yellow is not very intense. So I am my pick up some color from here. It's very light yellow in the in this idea when it gets more, much, much more intense in the central part of the floor. And now you re coming with thinner brush on darker color. I think the first blue color is not yet very dark, very dry, So I didn't have to wait. Let me try thinking here. I think I'll wait because the color is spreading and I don't want that to happen and come in again when the first layer off all these areas is drying. 9. Painting Gokarn (Bluebellvine) flower: Now this first layer is completely dry on. I can come in with our darker blue color for which I'm using are clamoring on. I'll be coming in with this Tim brush and I'll be creating the texture which is there because of the veins on the floor. So I'm carefully creating the dark areas or where there is shadow in watercolor. The next layer has to be ticking off. Otherwise it takes seven color from the underlying layer on you get undesired desserts. This is the inside battle coming back to the fertility is outside on. I'm continuing doing the vins on the floor. - These flowers come in. I think so were three colors. One is this royal blue are the marine blue kind of color. The skin variety is in complete white color. On the 3rd 1 is purple. At least those are the varieties that I have seen myself and it's this plant is a creeper grows kind off offenses are on other trees. We did support and then you get these floors. This is the area where the surface of the better tones in and hence that is this shot of edge. Did you see and hear. He's very kind off. We can see the surface. I also want to indicate the internal petals now very lightly and and come in with a very faint well Tyne blue colors and being the veins inside this. You're no idiot. I'm sure this color will lighten up once it is dry. Now, I think what remains to be done is adding shallow area stem. I'm meeting some brown on a green color, some blue dark, electable on. Be painting the side of the stem in a darker color. - And I think I can call this flower as complete. I have included a reference photographs off these flowers in the Pinterest board. I've been them from sources on the Internet. So when you use these photographs for reference, make sure that you don't the violet anybody's cooperate. Andi, See you in the next lecture
