About This Class

Welcome to the SketchBook everyday Series of courses.

In this third course, you will learn how to draw and paint 8 different bird feathers using watercolors.

My name is Mandar, a Fine Artist, and a sculptor. I will be leading you through this course.

I've designed this course for the artist in you who wants to improve your art but has limited time to practice. SketchBook is your best place to practice and hone your skills. It’s your private space; and your aim here is not to produce a gallery ready painting but to try out new things, have fun and improve your art.

In this course, we will draw and paint 8 different feathers having different colors and designs. By doing simple sketches like this every day you will learn to draw things in a simplistic manner, understand the light & shade; and gain the confidence to use watercolors more effectively. Painting like this will give you the joy and satisfaction of creating something beautiful every time.

I’ll show you how to draw each feather, shade it using a pencil and then how to paint it using different watercolor techniques. This method of painting gives best results and improves artistic confidence very quickly.

This way of practicing is great for people who want to do something creative every day and also for those who want to pursue art or illustration as a career. You will see every line that I draw, every brush stroke that I make and I'll also be talking to you about my process.

This course is for you if you want to improve your art and are willing to practice art making for at least 15 minutes every day. It doesn't matter if you are a student, a professional, a homemaker or a retired person. No prior art making experience is necessary to take this course. Just having the interest is enough.

I look forward to seeing you inside the class!

Every day you will learn to draw things in simplistic manner, understand the light and shade, and gained the confidence to use watercolors more effectively. Painting like this will give you the joy and satisfaction of creating something beautiful. Every time I will show you how to draw. Each feather shared it using a pencil and then how painted? Using different, more dick allergic needs. This metal of painting gives best results and improves artistic confidence very quickly. This way of practising is great for people who want to do something creative every day. And also for those who want to pursue art or illustration as a career, you will see every line that I draw, every breast talk that I make, and I'll also be talking to you about my process. This course is for you. If you want to improve your heart and are willing to practise art making for at least 15 minutes every day, it doesn't matter if you are a student or professional. Ah, homemaker or a retired person? No prior art making experience is necessary to take this course. Just having interest is I look forward to seeing you inside class. 2. Feathers Materials Used: Let's look at the supplies even use in this course I was sketchbook part. You can use a smaller one or a bigger one. In this course I'm using a bigger one. On the paper is 1 30 gy ism. Then I have ah set off band mortar colors. Ah, half inch flat brush. One or two small round brushes. Ah, black men for being on a six b pencil. A piece of cloth to wipe your brush and a continent for water. That's all what I will be using in this course. See you in the next lecture. 3. Feathers Feather structure and reference photos: lecture in this lecture I'll be talking about Putin's 1st 1 is I'll explain the structure off offender so that you find it easier when I used those particular words in my lectures in this class. And then I will talk about the reference photos, which I'm used for my paintings or sketches. So let's start with what Feather looks like. First, I'm drawing the central line off defended. It's also called the Central Shaft, and now I will be doing the veins off the feather. There are two wings on any fiddle, and what I'm doing right now is the thalamus and the small things, which I'm growing at the root off the feather, our record after feathers. And then there are some Downey barbs, which are next to the after feathers. So let's name the parts again. This is called the Re kiss or the central Shaft, then on the sites that are two wins, which are made off Bob's. So that's the second Wien. These structures are called after feathers, I think, because they are just after the main feather. And then there are some lose Bob's, which are cornered down only for this or Downy Bob's this part is hollow, and it's called Callum Us or the quill. Now, let me show you what the vein Sad middle. These are the bobs which are attached to the central chapter, Rodriquez. And then there are small things which protrude out from the from each barb on those a record the bar bills. So to show that to you in more detail, I'm expanding that view to these two are the bombs, and these provisions are called the Barbie Dolls. These bargains meshed together on give the structure and strength to defend it coming to the reference photos which I have used for making the sketches in this class. So here is the Pinterest board that I've created. Andi. I've used images, various images from this board as reference for my sketches. I encourage you to use these catches and these photographs as reference Are any other bird feather photograph me to find on the Internet? Only Make sure that you're not violating anybody's competence, Molly, who are using the reference material. The Ural off the board is shown on the screen right now. I've also included that in the class resources. I hope you will find that useful. Thank you. And see you in the next lecture. 4. Feathers 1 Blue Jay Feather Part 1: welcome to this lecture. In this lecture, I'll be drawing on painting of Blue Jay Feather. This bird is native to North America. I'm starting to draw the central shaft or the Ricky's off the feather. And now I'm coming toe drawing the veins off defender on one side. And now, on the other side, there are different types of feathers on a bird. On this one is a flight feather conducting the center self. And I'm also drawing the thalamus or the hollow shaft at the base of the weather. But unfortunately, you concede earlier, here it is. And I am now drawing the downy barbs or the after feather. And now I'm trying to draw the different color patches on the feather. This feather has black dark blue on light blue. Practice on on it. But but pencil. I can only indicate these with wearing amounts of darkness or values. I'm drawing those patches. I'm right now Drying the black badges on this feather is from the tail of the board as I come closer to the base of the feather. The markings, the color markings going, reducing insides on this area is great on the feather. So I'm shading it that way. And now I'm turning the page so that I can nicely draw the barbs on the other women on. I'm using a very light pressure because I want to indicate agree color. - And now I want to mark the areas which have dug blue gradation and the idea of which has light blue color. I'm going to leave that bite off the people. And now I want to restate the Ricketts and also the beans. And so I'm applying a little more pressure so that I get darker line darkening the line on the being on the other side of the Ricketts and complete the drawing off the blue Jay Feather. See you in the next lecture. 5. Feathers 2 Blue Jay Feather Part 2: Now I'm going toe draw and paint the fender again. So I'm under. Draw this very lightly on without any shootings. So that's the central shaft on This is the being on one side, the vein on done did say as each feather is different. I am not so much concerned about making this feather look exactly as the feather on the left inside on, So I'm taking the Liberty toe drive freely. That's the drawing, which required for painting over it, and now I'm mixing a light blue color. I will be applying that on the right inside win with a round brush on very thin color. I'm painting the right side of the vein on greeting this like blue color as the base off base color for this part of the wind or this side of the wind. Andi, I'll be painting the other side off the vein with the gray color, because under black, dark blue and light blue markings are on the right hand side off the feather on the left hand side is pretty much agree on. Hence, be painting that just a regular. I turned the page the sketchbook has, and when I required so that my hand doesn't come over the area which is still but on. It also helps me toe paint very precisely. Just next to an area which is already wet on leave Very Tyne gap between the two areas so that one killer didn't get mixed into the other one. Now I leave these two colors alone until they are dry on. I'll come back up to something now. These colors are dry. Andi, I can start painting the second layer mixing dark blue color on with the flat brush I'm marking. The idea is very one the dark blue color to appear here. I'm using a combination off ultra marine and cobalt blue to paint this dark blue on with the vet A round brush. I'm waiting the India just below the dark blue marking so that I get a nice gradation there , Chris plane. The paper was right the second layer of dark blue color, but have spread in all directions. But as the paper is dry, that's not happening on. I can make the color spread in only in their direction where I wanted So with a black color , I'm coming with coming in now. On with a round brush and painting the black patches. - I'm painting the green media near the base, off the feather on disgrace. Nothing but very thin wash off black. And now I'm again running away for us on the bottom edge off the black market so that the black color also great. It's nicely into their dark blue. Oh, and now I'm coming to the underside, drawing the I'm painting the every kiss right now with the black color. - Now I want to paint the other half with dot could agree so that have and for that time taken black on my brush on. I'll be spreading that, but not a mortar, so that it becomes agree. - I'm spreading the color with the flat brush on. Because of that, I'm getting the texture for the months and now impending some After Weathers, - I'm coming in with a round brush just to make sure that now plane of the vein is nice and crispy. I'm restating the re kiss, and now I'm painting the Now I'm painting The Quil are the gala mus, and the way I'm doing it is I'm playing great on one side on living the other side as white so that I get a feel off three dimensionality on some fine doing here and there. Before I finished spending this, I'm making sure that there is a black line running. It's an out plane for the vein in the right hand side, and I'm almost done with printing this feather. See you in the next lecture. 6. Feathers 3 Motmot Feather: welcome to the election. In this lecture, I'll be drawing and painting a tail feather off aboard card turquoise brought Mortman. It's a native board. So Central America, I'm starting with the four B pencil. On first I'll draw the ray kiss or the central shaft, and you will notice that this feather is peculiar in the sense that the vein has a break in between means. The vein has two parts to it, one which is attached towards the base, which I'm going right now. And the other part off the vein is towards the tip off. And there is a gap between these two parts of the veins on Greek is is very much like a thread in between. And now I'm shading the vain and the tip off the feather, the federalist turquoise colored. But the tip is black color, so I'm sharing it with a six b. Benson. I'm darkening the rictus, and now I work on the part of the vein, which is towards the bottom of the credit. I'm turning the beach so that I can draw the bobs very nicely. Andi, I'm growing the bobs without four B pencil again and again turned the page so that I can draw the barbs on the other side of the wind. And I want to share one side of the vein so that there is some dimensionality. You won't do that. So I'm making one side darker than the other one, and this will be This kind of shading will be purely because off the light, falling on it from one say, and I'm done with drawing the tail feather off Dr Quest Broad Martin. The next step is still draw the feather again and then painted. So on the next page, I'm drawing the feather again, and this time I'm not appreciating it because I want to paint over that on. Hence, I'm also drawing it very lightly so that the pencil marks don't remain after I painted. You could also use water soluble colored pencil, but that's not a must. Now I have the basic shape off the federal ready, and I can start painting, so I'm mixing our turquoise blue color and with a flat brush. I'm goingto apply that on the part of parts of the vein which are attached or which are near the base of the feather. No matter how good are are materialists. We can never reproduce the brilliance off colors which is there in the nature. No, I'm having a tick earlier, off color I'm also applying the strokes in the direction off the bobs. Oh, I'm taking away the extra color which was left on the paper on my I'm also wiping the color off onto a piece of cloth. The intention is also create some texture order. Indication of the bulbs. It's easier to get get this kind off texture when the color is semi dry. All this brushwork is just to create the feathery picture off the bobs. - Now I'm coming in with a round brush having black color on it On painting the tip off the feather There is some gradation between the black color Onda turquoise. Now I want O being the central shaft. I'm starting with the quickly one of the gala Mus. I've left it just with a black border because that will is hollow and it's white, translucent white. Andi, I'm painting the remaining part of the chef now with a fine brush and I'm painting one side off the Calamos with Greek alert so that there is some dimensionality toe that and also applying that Greek color on one side of the feather which basically darkened on Give some feeding off light and shade So I'm drank, not do it not will do it, brother and we are almost towards the end off painting this feather on I'm now writing the name off the fill it It is her voice brown more on. We're done with that you in the next week. 7. Feathers 4 Red Tail Hawk Feather: welcome to this lecture. In this lecture, I'll be drawing and painting the feathers off a red tailed hawk. It's a bird native to not America with a four B pencil. I'm starting to dry. Post was the brake is off the feather on and one part off the vein and some after for this , the second side of the vein you after fenders and the elements. And now I want to draw the barbs. I turned the page, and I'm drawing the bulbs lightly. These Bob's again have things growing out of them, which are gold bar bills and these Babeu's in the lock into each other and then give that stiffness toe the feather. So when the birds are cleaning their fender, they're basically straightening the Bob's and the Babeu's and applying the vaccine court or them, which makes the feathers motor pool. This is again, uh, flight feather off the board. There are different types off feathers on a single bird. Some give the sheep to the bird and protected from the hardest conditions. Lt Some help in flying, and the tail feathers help in changing the directions. This feather is how this feather has ah brown overall color light brown. And then there are some markings on it which are dark brown or black in color. And so I'm indicating those that brown markets with the exact line of the pencil this way off, creating drawings off the object which were bending, or which we plan to paint us, get better understanding off the object and finally helps in making our painting better. And at the tip that is one band across the federal, which goes from one end of the one end of the vein to the other end. That's what I indicated on that completes the drawing off the feather some markings yet and did. And now I'm drawing the feather again. But this time I owned the paint. It's I tried very lately. That's the basic drawing, and now I can come in mixing light brown color on with the flat breasts. I'm applying that to the complete feather. This feather has a light area towards the bottom left, and so I'm leaving that idea without any on. I'm trying to create the gradation with the color of it. Waas existing there. I didn't add any color toe the printing I'll now need this for there to dry on this color to dry before I add the second layer. No is dry to an extent. It's still not completely dry, but I can overlap the next layer. Now, with a round brush on our dark brown color ramming, I'm coming in and painting the markings on the feather. No. Two feathers are exactly the same. So I'm not worried about painting the markings exactly as per though drawing which I made earlier. - Yeah , there is a highlight on the Ricketts on that. So I am not painting the Ricketts with the brown color. I'm leaving that as white paper and now I'm painting the band and the tip off over fit it. - Now I'm painting the Ricketts, but I'm making sure that I leave some white highlight on that. I won't be painting it completely solid since I'm working with transparent watercolors, have toe retain the rights of the paper. If I was using hoping wash, I could have been to the white, over the brown, darkening the markings. This outline will give some definition toe the fender because that media I didn't have any color. It's white. So there was some our plane necessary there. Now I'm drawing the after feathers or down evidence now need barbs and the delemus. The calumet is hollow, and that's the reason it looks transparent or translucent. Andi, it doesn't have the collateral defended. Now I'm adjusting begins and the tip off the finish coming into the tin brush to the state. Derrick is I also want to make the wien on the right inside a bit darker. So I am now coming in middle, darker brown, but still tin down. And I'm repainting, though right between I'm making sure that I don't completely over that overlap the Marqise , I believe necessary. I'll restate them once. This colors bright and watercolor dries lighter than it appears when it is ready and it's necessary toe compensate for that. And I'm done with the painting off the federal off Red tail hawk. But I still want toe, and some details are darkened. The markings once again. So I'm have taken some ticker color on the brush, and I'm adjusting the darkness off those markets, and I'm sure when this colored rise it will be a lot lighter than what it appears now and that I would like to stop here on D. C. You in the next lecture 8. Feathers 5 Macaw Feather: this lecture. In this lecture, I'll be drawing and painting McAuliffe in that Mako is native to Central and South America on. It's a simple feather, so I won't be drawing and sharing it before painting. So this will be a single drawing on which I'll be pending. So have drawn the fender. It's Ari kiss delemus beans, Andi. Now I'm doing the after feathers, and now I'll be starting toe paint it. This vendor has yellow, green, blue and brown colors on it. I'm starting with the blue color, and there is no definite shape. So the area in which a particular color is there, so I won't be applying them with, ah particular in a particular C what I'll allow them to mix into each other so that the yellow and ah blue mix together and form the green. So I'm done with applying the blue color I come in with have come in with your local and I'm applying Now. Green color, which is blue, is green, but when it gets mixed up with the yellow, it will. Could you get another earlier, which will be more off yellow, then green, and I'll allow these red colors to mix into each other, and now I'm mixing of brown color we don't want to apply. And the base of the feather. Andi. I'm also applying that wet into wet or at least, but touching the color existing on the paper into Not at Brown on with a tin brush. I'm painting the after credits and the gala mus on adults with the same brush. I'll paint the They kiss. I'm mixing the brown again. This time I wanted to be tinker so that it doesn't much too much with surrounding blues and greens. - Uh , trained trend is the ships on indicating some barbs and instead off painting with the brush again, I'm using a black pen, darkened Enriquez and also one side off the gala Mus, and I'm done with printing the macaw feathers. See you in the next lecture 9. Feathers 6 Satyr Tragopan Feather: welcome to the elective, and this lecture will be drawing and painting the feathers off sodded drug open. It's a bird. It's a pheasant, Andi. It's found in the Himalayan reaches off India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. It's declared nearly threatened. It's also called Crimson Hawn pheasant because it grows horn in the mating season. I'm drawing on painting feather, which is found on its front. Sight on the neck and the belly have drawn the weakest, the veins, the after feathers. And now I'm drawing the white circular patch, which is found near the tip of the feather on this patch, is surrounded by black color on. That's what I'm shading right now on this Feather also has some markings in the exact fashion. I'm trying to indicate the barbs with light pressure. This feather will have red, black, white Andi like brown colors in it. This board has multiple off these feathers on its nick just on Billy. And because of that, this whole area has these bright colors and white dots in that I'm trying to no shade the feather of it, a pencil held at the end. This creates very gentle pressure, Andi. It's easier to shared in that way. This is not a flight feather, and that's the reason the after feathers and the downy barbs are more than more on this feather rather than the flight finance. Now I'm drawing the feather against that I can paint it. I'm starting with the Ricketts Onda Vince and the secular patch near the tip off defender and some indication off the after fenders. Now I'm ready to paint it, and so I'm mixing the colors have I have mixed a light brown and applying that dough bottom half off the feather and also indicating some after feathers for indicating these I'm using cornered off the flat brush. Now I'm mixing an orange color Onda playing a batch of that and now our deep red color for the top portion off defender. - Okay , now I'll allow this further to dry now that it's dried toe certain extent I'm coming in with ah brown color a tin brush on. I'm starting to indicate the markings on the weather, - so with the same brown color now I'm indicating the after feather. - Now I'm indicating the thalamus getting I leave it white in between because it is hollow. Now I have come in with the black color on the same brush. Andi, I'm outlining that white patch, which I'll be leaving as it is a light indication off the shaft, the red and Orting ideas of defender are looking very flat on the crime. Coming in with ready color again, 10 down, red color on I'm indicating the barbs again so that the feather will have some picture in March. A color. You can use the same color twice to get out deeper color. And that's what I'm doing right now. I allowed the underlying red color to dry, and now I'm coming with the same red color again. On top of it, I'm doing the same thing with orange color on the orange area off the feather, indicating those bulbs. And I'm almost done with painting this feather. So I'm finishing this off by writing the name off the bird and Sunday, the trunk open. See you in the next lecture 10. Feathers 7 Argus Pheasant Feather: Welcome to this lecture. In this lecture, I'll be drawing feather off the board. Argus present. It's subordinated toe southeast issue. I'm starting out with Ah four B pencil on and I'll be drawing the feather Rhonda Rick is and the gala mus on. Now I'm drawing the Vince. All right, This feather has light brown base color and then it has many circular dark marks on it on these dark brown or black marks have later background. And so I'm drawing the that brown spots. Oh, and now I'm sharing the complete fender, leaving the circular 80 years alone. I'm not sharing those. You can see that. I'm holding the pencil almost paddler toe the paper and care appreciating around the circles. I'm darkening the out plane off the and drawing the rickets again. Now I'm starting to she black or brown spots which are all over the feather And now some indication off the after feather Oh, that completes the drawing off the weather. I would draw and paint the feather again, but I'm not happy with the way it has. Don't know I want the dark patches, Toby. Bigger in size on dso I'm re drawing and painting defender. This can happen to anybody. As you practice, you will draw and paint something, but you may not be happy with what you have drawn or painted instead of trying to correct it. It's a much better option to start all over again on this time. The output will be much better than the first attempt, so I'm starting to draw the fender again. On this time, I'll make sure that I draw The circular patch is much bigger in size, but I will not share them because I want to paint over those. I'm drying these circles close to each other on now. I'll come in with color, applying a thin wash off your local or a light brown to the complete feather on indicating some after feathers at the same time on, leave this color to dry for a few minutes and I'm back now with the color completely dry on . I can start playing the next layers taken our dark brown color on a round brush, and I'm spending the circular patches they're not in a in any particular order are in a particular orientation, so I'm not worried about how one patches arranged next to the other. This color is quite take Andi Hope pick, and in the next step, I d come in with the lighter brown color on paint around these patches and leave some area our own. These practice so that they look as if there is a light border toe, these dark brown patches. You can see the size and density off these dark patches in this feather versus the feather , which I painted earlier, and you can see why I was not very happy with the first for the average I painted. Now I'm coming in with later brown color, and I'll paint around these dark patches. That's the reason I have selected a thin brush, and I'm carefully painting around the I just does . A dark brown color is not completely dry. It doesn't mix with the light brown color too much because they're not brown color, which I implied earlier in the patches is very thick. Even if it I by mistake or left that patch, the color doesn't spread too much. In watercolor painting, you have toe be proper attention. Toe works the consistency off the color picture you have on your brush. What a color doesn't mean that you always paint with very thin color. It has to be taken wherever the one on also pick. Very What do you need it as? This is a sketchbook. I'm not worried about the feather, which I paint really incorrectly and actually tells me about the learning which happened. Andi, I'm happy with what I could achieve after that. Learning. That's the reason a sketchbook is your place to have fun without the attention off creating a final gallery Really painting. I'm no indicating some after feathers and the gala mus just to add some depth, I'm coming in with dark brown color and painting the delemus on Derrick is Ricketts has some highlights on it on. That's the reason I'm not painted it completely solid. Thank you. Darken the side off the elements so that it looks as if there is a dimension to it. Her dimension to it. - I'm softening the dark line of the weakest Andi trying to reinstate or re state into the darker color, finding some depth to the after finance and the see you in the next lecture 11. Feathers 8 Black Cockatoo Feathers: this lecture in this electoral be drawing feathers off a male and a female black Ocado. These boards are native toe Australia. Andi, I'm starting to draw them to other feathers with the full depends him first I'll be drawing the feather off a mill Black Ocado. This feather is black and has two big red sports on the beans. So I'm doing the vein right now and some after feathers. These figures do not have ah, curvature on the vein. They're pretty much straight line. And now I'm drawing the red patches. Obviously, since this is a pencil drawing, I won't be able to show the color. But when I shared this feather, I'll not appreciating this. Now I'm drawing the further off female black. OK, The shape of the brain is very similar. Only the markings on this feather are different. This has yellow, red and white colors in it with black markings on it. Oh, I'm starting to draw the markets. Drawing these markings is ah, complicated job. But I'll start with sharing off the first feather, which is off male. Kakadu. I'm using our six p pencil to share it because the feather is black and color. Andi, I leave the ready idea on Tuesday and negotiating the delemus some after for this on the weakest. The veins of this feather don't paper towards the epics. Almost. They almost have Ah, tangle of end. And now I'm coming to the whether off the tee me here, while changing out to be more careful because I believe the markings intact carefully sharing around the markets. I'm having toe look at the photograph very carefully because I want the markings to look authentic because the design is so complicated compared to other feathers. And now I will speed up the video so that you can watch me. She had this feather, but don't have to play that and same speed as I do it. - Now I've almost completed sharing the going the after feathers. And that completes their drawing off the for this. And I can now go and go ahead and redraw these feathers for the painting. I'm doing this feathers very lightly because I want to go being diluted. Oh, again, as every feather is unique, I don't have to match this feather with. For that I have grown and just has to look like a feather off that bird itself and not not off some of their birth. That much precision you should have. When you draw these Phillips, I will again speed up the drawing process so that you don't have to watch it at the same speed on. I've come back to normal speed when I'm done with the drawing. So now I am ready to and these and I'm coming in with the red color for patches on the first feather in the reference photo that I'm using. These red markings are not. I didn't tickle each other. There are no the same size. Now I'm painting the basic color for the other feather which is supposed to be having white yellow on red bag down. And then the design will come or the markings will come on top off that with black alert. So I've applied light your local er on. I'm applying some bread and I'll allow this to dry before I come in with the black color. Now that the first layer is dry, I'm coming in with black color on.
