In this practical singing course you will learn how to find your own unique singing style whilst maintaining a healthy voice. We will look at

  • Breathing

  • Range

  • Voice qualities (the vocal techniques needed for singing particular styles of music)

  • The break in the passagio

  • Avoiding constriction

  • Projection

  • Diction

  • Looking after your voice: safe singing

The course is very practical with exercises in every lecture. It is designed to look at one topic every day, but you can keep going back to the exercises which are most useful to you. You can also ask questions and send mp3s for individual feedback on your singing.

The exercises will help you avoid common singing problems like constriction (a feeling of tightness and not being able to get medium high notes out), bridging the break in the passagio (when the higher part of your voice sounds different to the lower part), running out of breath or lack of stamina.

I hold a Master of Music degree and have been teaching singing since 2005 and am myself a signed artist. I have worked with multiplatinum musicians right the way through to young children. At present my youngest student is 6 and the oldest is 102! There are no barriers to finding your voice. Age, experience and negative experiences in the past don't need to stand in the way. I have worked with people just after vocal surgery, I have worked with people who are terrified, I have worked with people who have had their confidence knocked and together we got through the problems and freed up the voice.

If you email me an mp3 or ask me a question you can expect a quick, detailed reply. I'm here to help you!

1. Introduction; What This Class Will Teach You: you need a night. Hello and welcome to singing for beginners to advanced vocalists. The point of this course is to help you find your own unique voice and singing style. That's Mantan. Good vocal health. My name is Steve Williams. I'm assigned singer and songwriter, and I have more than 10 years experience of teaching singing at the moment. My youngest, due to six on my older student, is 102 and I have a lot of experience of working with professional vocalists on teaching at universities. So I'm hoping that I'm gonna be able to help you with your singing and to work towards your own individual goals. Please feel free to message me at any point with any questions that you might have about the course or a bite singing or music. Generally, I'm always open to that. We're going to be looking at several key areas of singing in this course. We're going to be looking at breathing. We're going to be looking at save projection. We're going to be looking at finding on improving your ranch, looking at voice qualities or, in other words, the size that we make that that end to certain styles of music so that you begin can begin to sing the music that you really love on. We'll also look at vocal health on looking after your voice because, after all, you don't just need your voice for singing. You need your voice in every area off your life. There's a few things that would be great if you haven't placed before starting this course nothing very complicated. I only ask that your voice is healthy, but at the moment you don't have Nagy ALS or any serious infections such as tonsilitis or laryngitis, that your voice is helping. If you have problems with your spine with your Naqura back, take care of some of the exercises. I myself have a form of rheumatoid arthritis that causes fusion of my neck. So these exercises received for May, and I hope that they're going to be safe for you. But if you feel any discomfort at all, then please do stop. I'm sent me a message. If you've got any ongoing pain or tightness in your voice of your wife's signs of it like this, please do some. Consult a doctor before starting any singing program. Also, it needs to be remembered that videos like this are there to teach basic exercises. But learning singing is not like learning piano, for instance, where everybody learns the fingering on the scales in the same way everybody's voice is different on. There isn't really a substitute for finding your own properly qualified vocal coach by properly qualified. I mean, the person needs to know something about the anatomy of voice on high. The voice physically works. You can't teach singing with just a Grade seven or eight in music or high grade music. You need to know about the physiology of the voice and be able to work with voices that are different than your own. So are you excited to start? But let's get to the first lecture. 2. Singing Exercises Introduction: in this section, I'm going to teach you some practical singing exercises that you can do every day. And if you're dedicated to doing the exercises, you're going to notice some rail improvements in your voice. We're going to start off by looking at breathing because that's foundational to singing. And it also has an impact on Hitch A as, well, a zone support. We're going to look at things like projection. We're going to look a ranch. We're going to let that high today with the little break in the massage where your voice kind of changes gear between the low part of your voice on the higher part of your voice on , we're going to look at something absolutely essential. I'm not avoiding construction, avoiding tightness in the voice, so I hope you're excited to get going on. Let's begin 3. Breathing: the most important place to start with singing is breathing obviously important for the whole of life. But it will have certain any cuts on your voice. The way you breathed has a distinct impact on side. If you take a short shot right up here, it was like this. Promise me, you wafer May it will be gas p and it won't support signed. Also, you'll feel quite exhausted. And if you don't have out of put support, another thing that happens is that the pitch of your voice will go flat because it isn't held up enough. Quite often. When students come into me who maybe have some problems with pitch, it's to do with the breathing and support rather than with their. So it's very important that we start out learning to breathe in the correct way. Not in order to do this, I'm gonna ask you to grab, let's go and what we're gonna do the scarf is this. We are not gonna tie it round wrist. It's not gonna be up under your arm hits, but somewhere in between, in the middle of your ribcage, Okay? No, I want to breathe in wide Phil. So the whole of my ribcage expands, so that should make the scarf I works. So just think of breathing into the scar just gently like this. Oh God. You see my scarf expound back, so we'll do that one more time. Not that's a much quieter former breathing, but the gas be shallow breathing. This is called intercostal lateral breathing. In other words, we're breathing right, breathing in between the ribs. Not once you practice that for a little while, it should make you feel nice and relaxed. It's actually grant if you suffer from stage fright, because it will slow down your heart rate and help you feel a little bit less, I'm stated. So what we're going to do once you've mastered this style of trading is to breathe at. Don't you breathe. Just let the air out gently and hissing. Sign so right to the end of your breath with that hissing sand on a few time it. Most people can do that for about 15 seconds. So how long you could do that for? We'll tell you how good your lung capacity is, so just take a little minute to do not. You might want pause this video for a few seconds. Okay? I want to sing something using intercostal lateral breathing. And I would like you to quite high. Many times I breathe to sing this song. Are you ready to call it? Here we go. What will we do with drunken? Say what we do with a drunken Say what we do with rockets in the morning. Could you cut the house was once just once the start. So I'd like you to sing along with me. Just break again once at the start. And for whatever reason, you need to take another breath. Please do. We don't want to cause any unnecessary discomfort. So I'll give you a Betas. Well, so deep breath it. If you saw that all in one breath. Very well done. If you didn't just keep going back and practicing it until you can get it in one breath. No. Well, as you are able to sing that one breath to make it more challenging, we will slow it die. So let's see if you can sing it out this pissed way. Did you get it? Not you. Notice my voice much. A little bit tired of the ad If you do that exercise every day or a couple of times a week , you might want to use a matter note so that you could measure what speed you're singing up . You will be challenging your lung capacity, which will make your breathing better and better. Just one short note. There's something that we must not do breathing like this, and that is to do this. Do you hear high? When I raised my shoulders, my voice becomes very pinched and I haven't done anything in my auction. Voice to calls Not happen. Get my shoulders, little stretch. We won't maintain a nice wide space around here till at the sign really bring out. So you might want to go back and play this video a few times. I do this exercise several times this week because breathing really is conditional but welled up and keep up the good work 4. Range: in this next video, we're going to look at Rich, and we're going to start off by doing a little exercise for you to find your fuck. Not that might sign a little bit route, but believe me, it's not. FAC refers to the kind of vocal parts that are used when you sing in a choir, so the most common are soprano, which is the highest female voice mezzo soprano. Not quite as high as a first soprano, Alto, which is the lowest female voice, or the highest male voice tenor. The highest male voice. Barretto, which is a bit lower than Tanner. I'm best the lowest male voice, so we're going to find your flak. By doing this, I want you to look up at the ceiling uncounted. I'd lied to 41234 and slowly lower your head. Did you notice? When I lifted my head hard, the pitch of my voice fell significantly. That's because that's the natural resting position of my larynx when I took my head. But because I speak Children all day, my voice has worked its way into a higher pitched than it would otherwise be so quite often we don't speak where our voice would most like to be, so I'm going to give you a couple of minutes to do that. Exercise yourself, find the vast range of your voice. So if you'd like to pause this video, I just try that. Okay, now we're going to look at a couple of little exercises that will improve the range of your voice. Two things happen as your voice gets higher. You have your vocal folds that come together like this. When you speak, you're saying that your voice gets higher and higher. They vibrate faster and faster at concert. A. The note that play orchestrations up Teoh. It's called a for 40 because your vocal folds are vibrating 440 times a second, and by the time you get to topsy, your vocal Fels would be vibrating 1000 times a second, so they're moving very fast in the high pitch. Also, your larynx travels upwards. As your voice gets higher, your vocal folds get along and then your larynx travels upwards on. As your boys get to the work, your vocal fools get closer together. That means that there's a bigger space in your voice when you're singing a high note on as opposed to a low note, which is why high notes are lighter. The low notes. Okay, you probably watched Alexa the X factor when you hear people singing arpeggios in the light before they go in pointless, you wouldn't run a marathon to prepare for running a marathon. There's one little exercise that you can do that will kick your voice supple out your ridge . It's called the siren. So first of all, what I want you to do is say sing. Then take the air self started, say ng, and that puts the song divorce into your nose so that this happens If you hold your nose. That's where you want your voice to bay. Then just take your voice through its full range of movement. So it be a whole exercise goes like this singing ing. You'll feel your voice moving through its whole range of movement on any notes that you can hum through your nose like that you can sing. So if I can do this, I can do this. Not that I'm recommending you do that. No, a couple of safety notes. If you look on YouTube you'll see some people doing this exercise with their mouth open like this that can damage your voice when it gets to the top. But also it's a horrible noise. Your neighbours will probably call the police, so don't do that. Don't force your voice either higher or lower than it wants to go. Take it through a comfortable range of movement. If you do this a couple of times a day, which is quite easy to fit any you can do in the shar in the car, you could notice as much as a octaves increase in your voice in a few months because any muscle that we stretch becomes more flexible, there is another slightly slower way over improving arrange. This exercise is particularly good for people who've ever had problems with their voice. If you've had repeated Bogle infections, if it's somewhere in the past, you've had a tonsillectomy. This is a nice, gentle exercise. It's a gentle stretch of the voice, but it takes time. You would have to commit a certain amount of time every day to doing this exercise, especially if you already have quite a full ranches called sliding fits. So what you would do is saying this, uh, note. It's not. Ah would hear every note on the way up on the way down and so on and so forth. You would need a piano or a keyboard. This. If you don't have in tow, have one. You can dine load a multitude of free piano APs onto your phone or your tablet. Just so's you know what pits your heading? No. When we go up in the voice and we start singing higher, we can look quite big jumps. We can go way when we come dime we come down and smaller steps because you can actually injure your voice worse through pushing it too low than pushing it too high. You can do stand your larynx, which would keep you away from work for a couple of weeks. So we're going to practice access in your lower ranch by singing this sing soon things in saying Snoozing sings in sing, sing, sing syncing saying sing, sing, sing. So I'm just going dine from Middle C again. Don't push your voice lower than it wants to go when it starts to start. Sounds to start a little bit rumbly at that point you want to stop. Your voice is like the elastic in your pajama bottoms. In a way you can't say today. I'm just going to stretch. That's one small portion of it when you smacked. Stretch it. You must stretch it all. So don't work on the high part of your voice one day on the lower part another and spent most of the wake singing in the middle. You must stretch the whole of your voice every day. If you want to see results, the best way to do that is three the siren. So I hope that the section has been useful on that. You feel inspired to go on improve your inch. 5. Projection: in this section, we're going to look at save projection. We want my own major allies shining because shouting will damage your voice. If you're saying addressing a room filled with people or you want to raise the sun, all your singing voice, the absolute cities way to do that is to add twine to see if I had trying to my voice. Suddenly it signs much lighter, but I have changed the tone of my voice. I'm not shining out, you know. Some accents naturally contain twice. If you're Northern Irish, such as myself, your voice is like to have some twine in it. If you're American of your Australia, your voice is likely to have some natural trying and certain parts of England. They speak like received pronunciation, kind of accent that has no track. You're going to have to learn how to fake it basically high. So what I want you to dio is makes on a schoolyard, really jumped. I know you feel a bit silly, but there is pointed. So can you just pulse this video saying Yeah, Okay, Try that again. Yeah, slightly Basil. That's a sign that we associate with American Music Theater No, I That line is also a key component Off country music stumble out of bed and I stumble to the kitchen. Pull myself. I have a bad mission, and it's actually a key component of opera and classical music. I know that sounds strange, but if you think about it, if you're singing in the Royal Albert Hall and it's considered bad form to use my phone and classical music, you have thoughts people in front of you still furnishing high is your voice. Going to be hard over an entire orchestra is the twine that'll help you do that? Theo. Component. What happens in your voice when you make that twanging side is you engage a mussel culture are a sphincter muscle. When you tighten that muscle, your Lawrence, which is normally one long chewed, becomes two concentric tubes mix assign a lot more robust. Okay, let's just practice that a couple more times. Yeah, now that's trying high. Not necessarily in my pitch, but some of its high for you. Okay, no, there's another way off. Having saved projection. Have you ever seen singers stand like this when they're singing, or perhaps the kind of Freddie Mercury grabbing Mike from like that. They're not just doing that to look. What they're doing is engaging their lots. The muscles here, your shoulder breaded, please. This is what happens when you get your last 1234567 it No, I didn't create that increase in volume by doing anything in my voice. I simply pulled my arms back, actually, lean back a little bit until you feel pinched on your shoulder, but it's just tried out of the moment. So when you're r slices this, you are spot until you feel a bit of a pinch. There's a great examples of this online U shaped. There's a video of Freddie Mercury sing and we will rock you life. You can actually really say him engaging his laps, the cool sharks and they're singing Don't cry for me Argentina. Similarly, you could. You could really see her using her arms to create value. Surely bossy Goldfinger, Ellen Page singing Don't Cry for me. Argentina, not just waving their arms for sake of it, they're using their arms are wondering all the Osborne, another singer. He does this all the time. Next time you're watching singers live on YouTube about you will see them slightly moving like this to engage those muscles at some point. So let's try that little content exercise I just did. We're going to come to it when we get to four. We're gonna pillar arms back. So let's try that. 1234567 it one more time. 1234567 It actually, I put my arms like a fine Roman for Sorry about that. So if you'd like to play this video again until you're comfortable with these exercises, that would be great. This is a safe way off creating more volume in your voice. 6. Avoiding Constriction: This is a very, very important thing to master and singing on that is avoiding construction and singing with retraction off the false vocal fools. Our construction on retraction construction is with the voice titans on quite often, especially with women that will happen between high e N F. When we come to the brick in the Passat. Zhu, the voice just tightens and the notes get sort of stuck, sometimes for physical reasons on sometimes, because the singer is nervous and that means that the notes don't resigned. They don't ring ICT if this continues over a prolonged period of time or if the construction is very severe, it can result in vocal problems such as Nagy ALS, which are little hard bumps like blisters that develop on the vocal folds and stop the vocal folds from coming together properly. So you would end up speaking like this. No, Some people sing with construction for years and have no problems. That very gravelly signed that made by singers like Rod Stewart, Tina Turner that is constriction, that it hasn't harmed their voices. Bonneau also sings with constriction. But for most of us, it's something that we really want to avoid. And if construction is used, for example, to make that kind of Dreiling signed that Tina Turner's famous for it should be a choice, not on automatic default position. Off the vice retraction is exactly the opposite. That's when the false vocal fools are pulled back so that the voices open. There's a big space within the voice and that allies signed to be clear and ringing. Listen to some examples of construction on retraction, and for this I'm going to play you two different singers singing the same song. And that song is thinking me from Phantom of the Opera, which is actually a really difficult piece with some very difficult intervals in it. Now, just to be clear, I'm not saying that one of these singers is a great singer on the other. One isn't a good singer. All I'm saying is that one is showing examples of construction on one is not so. The signs is ringing. I Tibet more So First of all, we're going to listen to Emmie Ross, um, in the movie version singing Think of May on I want you especially to listen to the lines when we've said goodbye on Listen to the good and good bye. It goes backwards a little bit. It's tightened, but at that point in the song she's meant decide, like she's quite nervous and not doing her best. But then listen to what happens when she sings. Take your heart back and be free. So listen to the word heart. It's slightly tight. You can hear it moving backwards. The note doesn't ring ICT, so let's listen to think of me for way. Remember me once, you know while please oh, miss me and you'll find that once again you Long night. Let's listen to declare mur version. If you listen to the same two lines, we much before when we've said goodbye, take your heart back and be free. The notes are ringing on a little bit more because retraction as being employed there, So this signed is more consistent. - So we've talked a little bit about what construction is on. What retraction is. So let's Ni learn high to get a nice retracted open space and the lax. So when you want to loosen a muscle, you tighten it first. So if you want to go ahead, rece shoulders Andrew, raise your shoulders there is a way that we could do that within the voice, and it is to do this. I'm using my hands to demonstrate what we're doing inside the voice, and that is to close the stairs on open it and where it falls over. But I want you to fail the open space inside your voice. The feeling of it being released tighten loose. This exercise is called the Darth Vader, cause it sounds a little bit like better in the mask, so feel that open space that is called the inner smile. I didn't call it that, Incidentally, that's just what it's known us. So when you have that loose space in your voice, just want you to sing at funerals, see high sign rings right when everything is nice and loose when there's a nice open space within the voice. 7. The Break in the Passagio: we're going to talk about something quite important ni and singing, and that is the brick in the pus a geo. So I explain to you what's meant by that term in most people's voices, between sort of a high and high end, there is a little point where your voice changes, saw and where it will actually go into full satellite on Sunday or else into really all product all of its own accord. When you get to that point, this is because when you get to that point in your voice, it has sort of speech quality. As we demonstrated earlier, it will hit a sort of ceiling on unique to tilt your voice for it to be able to travel up further, and it makes a difference signed when you do that. So if you were to sing a scale and quite an operatic signed, say, Theo works, it's a consistent side. But if I was to try that speech quality as we talk to my earlier, uh, ah, uh, just tightens and disappears. We have to make back tilt so in it basically means that there's a different song in the higher part of the voice in the lower and in some older methods of teaching singing that can be referred to us had voice in the high part chest voice in the lower part just with the methods that I use. I don't use that particular terminology, but that might be phrases that you have heard before. So it is. Hi. Do we make the signed consistent? Because we have to make that tilt in order to hit the higher notes? No, if the whole off the song, If you're singing something wonderful, no way. Say what you would have him say. What's creating the consistency is that you're using the operatic style, which just happens to work in both those parts of the voice. So this is how it we can get a little bit of consistency, speech quality we can't carry into the upper part of voice. But the operatic signed we can on also the twine we can't, so we're going to practice some scales night in the 20 signed on. I want the top part of the voice to sign the same asked the lower part, which means that you're going to have to not be afraid of those notes when they get higher on, let them ring out. So we're just gonna dio some fists? Yeah, Way, Theo, No, You'll notice. I went up to Topsy there when I got really high. Yes, my boy started designed a little more operatic because that just can't be helped. But I still tried to meant in somewhat off a 20 tone. So it please don't work your voice through my ranch. Work it through your own ranch words comfortable. But if you want to say yeah, 20 side, you must cross the sort of space between an F. So I'm asking that you take it up toe asked Sharp. So if you wanna pulls this video on, have a little go up doing that. If you go a keyboard or a keyboard, up started middle C. And if you don't happen to have a keyboard out, well, you It's easy to download white, but you could follow the exercise. I've just done Sing it with me and just stop. If it starts to get uncomfortable for you, keep on going if it's really comfortable for you. So this is something. But a lot of people come to singing lessons for to Bridge this gap and possession. So we don't like I'm trying is owned and I want to do the same exercise, but in quite a non operatic signed. So, first of all, I want you to go. Do you usually exercise We used earlier to make the operatic starts in B. Guia. Okay. Ah, sorry. Coming from Ah, Theo, Theo. Uh, much, Much easier Thin the last exercise because that's the kind of tilted position that that your larynx wants to bay in the top part of your voice. So again, if you want to go back and do that exercise, making sure that you go up to at least have sharp further if you want to. But you don't have to. So have a little. It'll go up that so sorry throughout your voice. That's something that won't happen in a day. You have to be quite dedicated to doing the exercises, which I'm sure you are, because that's the reason that you've signed up for a course like this 8. Diction: Let's have a little think about addiction or words and singing. Italian is the language of opera because it expresses emotion through vile signs on violence. Signs are easier to sing, such as, um or A whereas English is all about the continent going to have a look at a couple of little exercises. Just make that there is a sentence, believe it or not, with only the vials Can you read it? And if we look at the same sentence with the continent's much, much easier, isn't it? We can work out what that means. That shows how important it is to enunciate it continents properly, quite often when someone says, I like that song, but I can't make out the word. What has happened is that the tease of the days or some constant somewhere as missing So going to start a little tongue twister Money making Monday morning mix a merry, mirthful mind. Now let's start slowly. Money making Monday morning mix A merry mirthful mind lets out a rhythm Monday, making Monday morning mix a merry mirthful mind money making Monday morning mix a merry mirthful mind moneymaking Monday morning, mixing Mary mirthful mind now when you make that m signed, you probably noticed that your mind is consistently moving forward. Unlike in this exercise, where your mouth will move backwards on the danger is that your voice could make backwards too lovely. Lotus lilies lie along the lilting Lyndon Lee said again. Lovely lotus lilies lie along the lilting linden Lea. Lovely lotus lilies lie along the lilting Lyndon Lee. So these are two exercises to practice every day. They really will work your mind if you should fail Exercising with him signed. Taking your mouth forward on the L side, Taking it backwards once you faster those you can move on to the really difficult 17 swans go swiftly sailing to the sunset in the west Nice are really annoying. So the aim is to try and keep The ass is really short. Seven swans go swiftly sailing to the sunset in the west. No, it will probably take a few weeks to master this. So have fun with it. 9. Posture: So this is a great postural exercise for singing. It's a Pallotti's exercise. Lattices absolutely amazing for Booklist because it works core muscles. It looks of culture, but also because of the breathing that's used. So what? I'm going to get you today. It's down against the wall, your feet. Maybe about so I imagine he's protect your back. So you just go pale back of your head off the wall so your chance controlled your chest, then your shoulders on your upper back very slowly until you're back. When the gaps ago. Just hang on a second and she could deep breath in you tell them so the back rows of all stock your for great until your back is not taking care of your just a shame. I get you to a very good posture for singing. 10. Introduction to Voice Qualities: we're going to look in this section at voice qualities, and that's the signs associated with different genres of music. So if you have made a classical singer in the past, but you'd like to learn to sing about a rock, if you've been a folk singer on, you'd like to learn a bit of so the sections really going to help you? This is really practical set of exercises that you can apply to your singing, so that's far ahead. I hope you enjoy this section. 11. Voice Qualities: Speech: So the first voice quality. We're going to look at his plan. Oh, speech on this is a voice quality that's very close to your own speaking voice. My what's beautiful about this voice quality is it's a pure pair sign that doesn't have a lot of the Brad. Oh, so it's perfect for style. Such a spoke. My love said to me, My mother will mind my father won't slide you for your kind. So how do we make this sunt? We're going to come to it and we're going to start singing at five. So I want you to do this with May 1234567 It almost as if you were speaking at. So let's do that again. 1234567 It Brits night Through this part, of course, we're gonna sing Happy birthday Quite a lot. So I'd like you to start off by singing Happy Birthday Just as if you were speaking at someone Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday Happy birthday Happy birthday to you You know the one thing about speech quality. It's a beautiful sign, but it won't go through the whole off your ridge. If you try and go higher and your range and speech quality this happens. So I'm going to say a scale in speech quality night. Maybe so. Todo cae home. I was titans and just stops. So in order to access the higher part off the voice, we have to tell the larynx a bit from up position to make a more residents sign like this. Do Raby Teoh. We'll talk a little bit about that later. 12. Voice Qualities: Twang: the next four scolded we're going to talk about is twining and Twining is awfully important to projection, as we discussed Are there when I am trying to my voice, suddenly it feels a lot more space. It's obviously a core component of an awful lot of music. When you think twine, you may think country music stumble and Obama tumble to the catch in part myself. A cab twice and also a core component and very rocky or false on. I love This at May 3, let May at a misery that has loved twice. It's usual music theater. No, no, his wife. But I also interestingly, really core ingredient off opera and classical music, because when you think about it, you're a gospel singer. Microphones are bad form Acosta singing. Or maybe you were singing in an era where they hadn't been invented. You've got a 103 pay Symphony Orchestra behind you on your voice has to carry over the soft furnishings on the people in the ring. How do you make that amount of noise? Well, it is by twine there as a muscle in your voice culture. Ari epic logics Victor muscle don't expect you to remember that no two singers asked the trigger on when you tighten that muscle when you make this side, what happens is that your larynx, which is normally one long cheap, becomes two concentric. Choose on that makes aside much lighter. In fact, the human voice is capable of reaching frequencies that no other instrument in the orchestra. So essentials projection a satchel to certain kinds of side. How do we make this side? Well, I want you to be careful who you do this in front of, but if you could just sing for May Yeah, yeah, yeah, go ahead and do that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Try it somewhere high and you're in. No. Try it somewhere quite low in your rent. Great stuff. And I were going to do some little five note scales to try. So let me just get note. Theo. Thank you to do that exercise. If you don't have a keyboard home, you can dine on the keyboard up onto your phone, which might help with that Start at middle C goes through your own ranch, not mine. Whatever your ranch, maybe on really practices trying because it really is something very essential. Waiting through degree way. It's not OK. Fuckin empty span. Wanna breathe? Can't find their thought. You were sent from up above that you would mean so much more. I have to say Tell me the way and I want no 13. Voice Qualities: Sob: So So I'd like you to start out by singing Happy birthday like it was the worst first that you could possibly imagine. Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday Happy birthday Happy birthday to you No, I can you say I'm sad Sad about lowers the larynx on what happens when we lower the lyrics like that as we get a darkening of sun really famous example off this solving style. Birds flying high. You know the son. You know, if you just making a sobbing signed even though the songs feeling good, that was a genius of Nina Simone. So what happens when you make that solving sign is that your larynx is what's called a sympathetic organ. So if you hear someone choking up like we're going to cry like their larynx lures your legs will lure to on, you will physically feel sad. So we are in using this style, this voice quality emotionally manipulating the listener to a certain degree, neither wasa point in history where that kind of solving style was very invoke. If you think so. Oh, the winds are, you know, in some of the old 19 fifties screen musicals you would have heard this so often on sometimes in classical music of recent years. It's falling on a vogue, but if you use it in the right passage in a song, it's very, very effective. You wouldn't sing the whole song this way because you would. You would depress the listener. So how about we go again of singing the Happy Birthday Sergeant? Very sad. Maybe. Try singing the first press of feeling good with the Saab. Just lesson toe high. Different your voice signs where it's plan. How you know how I feel, son. In this guy, You know how for you breathe, drift and on by you know how few it's a new dawn is a new day. It's a new life for me. It's a new dawn, a new day for me Oh, you and I'm feeling good 14. Voice Qualities: Falsetto: in this video we're going to talk about foul set of and I think I should start by explaining what I made by falsetto. Falsetto does not main man singing really High man have to use a falsetto voice quality on occasions to access the top of the range. But that's not what full Settle is. The most famous example off falsetto that I can think off is Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday to JFK. So let's try singing about ourselves Happy birthday to Happy birthday to you Happy birthday , Mr President Happy birthday to so what happens and fall? Sadow is the false vocal folds, which are a pair of flaps above your travel Propose that come together when you speak or sing are coming together. But the true vocal fools aren't completely coming together Heads a lot of air as getting it . It creates that sultry signed. But it also and ems us to do something really important. And that is to hit a high note quietly, for example, I may not want to sing I so that's quite difficult, but I'd like you to practice that will go a little bit lower. Oh, Uh huh, Uh huh. uh huh. So make sure plenty of air is coming on. I'm not gives You fell Saturday. It adds real emotion into dynamic, and it's a very important thing to have in your singing took it. 15. Voice Qualities: Opera: Okay, So the last two vocal qualities are what we call the complex vocal qualities. Opera on belt? No. These are polar opposite ways of singing. If I sing something that sounds like this, I am tilting the firewood cartilage front of my Lawrence. If I sing something like this, yeah, Theo, I am tilting the cry coid cartilage at the back of my larynx. So those two signs are polar opposites on there. Quite complex signs. We're going to start with the signed called Opera The Classical signs Very resonant. So a gamma go to sing Happy birthday and we're going to sing Happy birthday in a very polite voice Do you have a polite phone voice? That's the kind of voice I'd like you to use. So could you possibly say hey to you? Happy. But hey to you. Hey, hey, Teoh. You know, there's a lot of the Brattle in that signed a lot of residents. Um, I don't worry about harming it up. Just Paul's. If it here, I'm trying singing like that. Take the Mickey out of Katherine Jenkins if that helps, Okay. I'll give you a second deposit to sing that happy birthday. Not to become an opera singer at seven years of training, you have to train as long as a doctor, so there's a little bit more to it than just this happy birthday exercise. But if you've never met a classical side before and it's a song that you like, here's a good exercise to help you. Could you just come through your nose and saying Try that on Then saying indie indie heart gut sign forces assigned out of your nose on through your mind in G not just lower your larynx on your jaw and saying the, uh suppose Try that with the larks Lord on the jaw. The work. There's a lot of space for the signed resident. No, I will go to try a little bit higher up Ugo. Let your jaw dropping the highest note one more time, Teoh. And then you know you may not want to be a classical singer, and that's fine. But remember, we talked when we were looking at speech quality about high. You can't hit the higher notes in your range in speech quality. Everybody needs to make this signed. Sometimes it's referred to us tilt in certain methods of teaching voice. You need to make that residents signed in order to access the top notes of your end very much based on that side. Once you can use that sign to hit the upper notes in your range, weaken tone that sign back and make it fit into a pop style or whatever style you will happen to be singing. But we do need to learn to make this signed. Okay, gonna move on. I do a video on the other romantic complex. Worse quality that is belt. 16. Voice Quaities: Belt: no. Before we learned to belt we look a belt, please make sure that your voice is healthy enough to take on the high end green exercise of your voice that this local politics requires. So if your voice sounds like this, if it's horses anyway, weren't ever feels tight, then the less maybe not the time to learn about the method that I'm going to teach. You should show you how to belt safely. But if you practice wrong for us in any other form of physical activity, you can't sustain an exercise. If you've been bouncing your you've been saying a lot. And after what your voice sides like this, you are using bad form. And you must avoid that kind of singing until you can talk to properly qualified boat coach . But there isn't really anything scary about it if you do it properly. So what I'm gonna get today is protector calling someone a clear, by the way, just called him like this. E a some try not with May. Yeah, no. Yeah. Accident, not less. Had a few notes that way. Yea, not because when you tilt your quite bored carpets about your large told them not backwards . To make this noise, you won't be able to sing very high in this style. If you want to really hide it with welling, it's best to use twine. So let's try that electrifies gam doing the ranch is comfortable for you. You don't need to necessarily me? Yeah, If you feel any scratching this tightness that stop you noticed that that has much power but is very different, as we were discussing before from the opera. And I still exercise to Tiu Tiu, help me. Fairly different street opera belt is this far Thyroid is my sing muscle cry is mine Yeah, Muscle, oh, little belt. If you felt the whole way through song it's a bit like typing someone a message completely in caps. You make an audience feel like you're shining up. It has to be used only in passages of music where it's appropriate, such as though. And if you have any questions on the topic of belt or any other, do you feel free to send me a message 17. Identifying Vocal Qualities in Recordings: I don't know how to what todo toe him. I've been changed really changed in these past few days when I've seen my seems like I don't know how to ISS I don't see why moves me. He's just so ways he's just one more. Should I bring him down? Should I scream and shout? Shoot! I speak Teoh. 18. Project: Easy Songs: so this section of the course were really gonna have some fun, and we're basically going to sing some carry. Okay, so there's three levels of songs here, an easier level moderately difficult on difficult. So you can either programs from the easy through to the difficulty. Or you can jump in at the level you want to be at. So going to give you an option of two songs in this video, which for the easy version one is How Long Will I Love You? By Ellie Golding. And as you can see, there's lots off available backing tracks on YouTube. My I count post the whole backing track in this course because that would in French copyrights. But I can direct you two tracks on YouTube, so that's a good track to the girls. Here's one for the guys. That's one of you might think. It's a bit cheesy, but I think it's really good fun. What makes you beautiful by one direction? What makes you beautiful? One direction. Let's take. I like his stick there give ourselves wider options, so when you're picking a backing track, try to pick one that you doesn't annoy you too much. it's not too cheesy, and also that's in a good key for you on. If you want to record yourself singing to a backing track and send it to me for feedback, that would be really great. 19. Project: Moderately Difficult Songs: So in the moderately difficult section, I have picked one song for both men, women, and that is the immortal. I can't help falling in love with you, which which is a bit difficult, you know, especially when it gets into the bridge of the song. So once again, be sure in select backing Track that's in a good keeper you out if you want to record yourself singing it and said that to me, that would be great. If you play piano or guitar, you want to accompany yourself and just play the song and look up the courts instead of using a backing track. That's also wonderful, but I'm looking forward to hearing you sing. 20. Project: Difficult Songs: so the really difficult section are on this first song's The Difficult section for the Ladies is Let it go on just because every three year old in the world is singing it doesn't mean that it's not a really difficult song. It has a huge ran Jeanette has belting. It has multiple voice qualities and that it's, you know, a complex song. And if you want to have a go that I would, of course, love to hear MP threes of your singing it. So that's the song for the ladies A man for the guys. Here is another difficult song. This one's particularly beautiful, I think. Who wants to live Forever by quaint? And of course, Freddie Mercury was just a vocal genius. The the scales needed to sing this song are to do with conveying the emotions to its diction. It's ranches, different voice qualities. Again, there's a lot going on in this phone, so once again it's all about picking the right backing track to you. And of course, you can accompany yourself on If you want to send me MP threes for my state buck, that would be great on if you experience any difficulties and singing any of these songs. If you have any problems with, um, feel free to drop me a message and describe what's going on and I'll see how I can help you . 21. Common Vocal Problems: So now let's talk about some common problems of the voice and what you can do about them if you have that kind of tightness in your voice, especially around the break in the massage. Oh, that is construction on. As we mentioned earlier in this course, the answer to that is the Darth Vader exercise. To create retraction. You always want to sing with that big open space in your larynx, but also you want to avoid hiking the shoulders up. You know, the modern phenomenon noticed tax neck? No. I have a form of rheumatoid arthritis, which has caused fusion of my next. Why do you have a small space here? But we always want to keep this space. Makes that raising your shoulders, dropping them on, raising your shoulders. I'm dropping them. We'll hear that crap aired shoulder here to shoulder so that with the retraction exercise, go back and watch the construction of retraction. Video is going to be essential to getting rid of that problem. So another problem that you might sometimes experience is a loss of ranch. You suddenly lose the top notes of your voice, not on occasions that come because my acid reflux, which then causes the body to produce mucus, which basically creates a barrier to your larynx. Traveling up on you would need to seek medical advice quite that. But quite often, proton pump inhibitors indigestion. Remedies are prescribed that more likely, though, if you have a certain loss of range that you just haven't been singing very much recently, and any muscle that you don't stretch just becomes a little bit less flexible. So if you do this siren exercise every day, that should restore that range. Not a very serious vocal problem would be a hoarseness. If you speak like this, what we're singing teachers look at when people come in for lessons. Is, does this person have clear tone? In other words, is the voice coming out or not? Voice mixed with air? Because if there's air coming like with the voice, that would be a sign that something is stopping your vocal fools from coming together properly on a lot of things can cause that one cause could be nodules, But there are other things that can cause it on. If your voice is hoarse, you really do need to go to the doctor that is a medical problem, and it needs medical intervention on Don't do any singing or take any lessons. Until that, has Bean resolved a lack of par in the voice. My lack of par in the voice just means you need to use the twice, so go back and watch the videos of twice, because twine makes voice bigger. No, if you have bean classically trained and you might feel your voice always saw its Costco, even you when you want to sing and other styles, the twine is useful for that as well for taking the off slightly resident edge off the voice. It's beautiful sign, but it's just not appropriate in all styles of music. So practice all the voice quality videos, especially the twine on the speech quality, right, in order to bring your voice back. If it's become a little bit more resident, then you'd like it if you have a little bit more of a brat oh, than you would really like in your side. Another problem is lightness and darkness of the voice. Basically, if we want the voice to be light, we use speech quality. And if we wanted to be dark, we used so oh, or simply poo. But the time. So I'm gonna sing a note. I'm gonna put my hand back whenever I put my tongue back seeking here the differences and signed between my time forward and back Oh, so with my tongue forward but flying high You know how fi with my tongue back birds flying high You know how, fi, if you're having any vocal issues there's any problems that I haven't covered in this section Anything you'd like to know about? Please feel free to post a question the Q and I were to send me a message I'd love to hear from you. 22. Vocal Health: very important topic. Night place. Don't feel tempted to just skip past this one. It is vocal health. If your voice isn't healthy, then your ability to make the sons that you want to make is going to be very limited. Also, you need your voice for your social life, your working life. It's one of the most important things that you have. The single most important that you can do to keep your voice healthy is to drink lots off water, especially if you have a big game coming up. This is because your vocal folds that come together when you speak, you're saying are coated mucous membranes. Culture mucosa There all seem made of fluid, so they need to be kept moist on. When you drink a glass of water, it takes about two hours to filter Roger body to all the different places that need it. So you know, if your singing regularly, you need to be drinking water a lot. If your voice is very dehydrated, I bet kruky and you've got a cold. One brilliant thing that you could do is just breathe in state. Just fill a mug with boiling water or you combine little boucle steamers. They're not very expensive about it. Pontes in the UK I just breathe in this thing because then the moisture passes straight over your book of old. There's certain things that that you could be doing that might dehydrate your vocal folds because you're signed to suffer. These include smoking not being judgmental here. But if you pass piping hot smoke straight over a mucus number, and obviously it's going to dry like so you would need to be drinking a lot of water and anything die erratic. You know anything full of caffeine, and I must admit that I have a Diet Coke addiction myself will strip your body of moisture . When I was training to be a singing teacher, they told us that for every cup of coffee that you drink, you needed to drink four glasses of water to make up for the dehydration that it causes. So just keeping that in mind very important when you're singing both Warmup killed I. The best warm up exercise is the siren that we looked at. Don't wear your voice right and warming it up. You don't need to warm up for half an hour before a game, but a couple of minutes is helpful and also looking at posture, getting your poster nice and healthy. If you constantly think of engaging your laps, we want to engage core muscles and singing. That's really going to help with son. Quite often. If you're in a choir you're singing in school and the teacher or chorus master might get you to worry about but not killed on. It's also important to kill died. So if we want to lose the muscle, this exercise is also great. If he ever get tightness or construction in your voice, we want to loose the muscle. Be tight at first. So if I want to lose my shoulders, I would do this. Titan, listen. The way to do that with the voice is like this gree. Did you see the movement? My legs there. So you just go to the end of your breath in that little creaking zon, and then that the voice go. Another exercise you can do. If your voice is very tight and constricted is called the Darth Vader. It sounds like this, so it's tightened. Listen, I'm not a sense of openness. Can you feel that sense of openness. When you do that exercise, you want to maintain that sense of openness through. I'm just singing Whenever you're singing, you always want to feel that space is called the inner smile. I know that's cheesy, but I didn't know that. So if you have up space, you'll be making a rich pills on. If your voice is tight, especially that's tight, when you're shifting gear between the middle of your voice into the higher part of your voice. That's a very useful exercise for you. Um, coughs, colds, sniffles, students of common ailments of the voice. The general rule of thumb is you can sing through flab, you know, guns going on. You can shift the guns by going, Theo saying ing ing ing ing ing ing ing ing. And that's also a good exercise for those of us who are NJ. And that had to stop that sort of rubble that can sometimes come into older people's voices because it keeps yourself palette very supple. But if you have any flam going on, it should hopefully get rid of that. Do not clear your voice. Do you know? Because that's like taking your ripples of sand papering them together. That's not a good thing today. Much better to just have a sip of water. Or, if you can't do that to swallow. But don't try and hack up flan. Don't be gross, not there are certain things that would be a sign that something is going quite wrong with your voice. Nah, Jal's are a common condition that effects people who are singers also people who are teachers or lecturers who may be working skull centers who are talking a lot all day. The sign that something like that might be going wrong is that you don't have clear toe that there's air coming artist. Well, his voice, because air is coming out as well as voice. What that means is, your vocal folds are not completely coming together. There's something obstructing them from coming together. So if your voice starts to side like that, you really do need to consult a doctor quite often, not give you what's called Marinol Scobey. I've had it both for medical, for research purposes. They stick a little trip up your does get done so they can look at your larynx and your voice piers of this great it's actually quite fascinating. Well, I think that is, if you're into that sort of thing, you can see Lauren Oscar please being done on U shaped. There's some interesting that he was where you could see people doing Sarid exercise we've just done. I'm making the twine side underlying Oscar B so that you can see what's actually happening in the voice. So if you search on YouTube for siren twine Loren Oscar, be several of those videos will come up. If that's your kind of by personally, I find that kind of thing fascinating. But I appreciate that. No, everybody does. And if you have any questions on the care of the voice and high to keep it healthy, please feel free to send them to May. At the other point. Vocal house that I'd like to make is that many people believe if they're singer, their voices, their instrument, that's not technically true. The whole of your body is your instrument on. If you have the kind of tax snack thing that people get this damage three big over screens all day, the rounded shoulders, that kind of thing. That's also quite bad for your singing. So I'm just gonna show you one little s exercise that will help with your posture for singing 23. Conclusion: if you would be interested in 1 to 1 Jewish in or just in finding out a little bit more about my teaching, you can visit my website at www dot singing lessons and I dot com and I.
