About This Class

Welcome to the Silver Swings Earrings class! This class will introduce you to the rolling mill, one of the best investments you can make for your jeweller's workshop.

My rolling mill is one of the pieces of equipment that I use the most in my workshop, helping me to recycle my silver and to change the shape and gauge of my silver wire - techniques I will teach you in future classes. I also use my mill to add beautiful textures to my silver sheet, and this is the technique I will focus on in this class. I will introduce the main features of a rolling mill and show you how to use it to add two different patterns to silver discs, and also demonstrate how the mill changes the shape of the discs. We will then thread the discs onto long elegant earwires - and you will make these too!

A downloadable information sheet to help you get the most out of your rolling mill is attached to the project section of the class, and don't worry if you don't have access to a rolling mill as the earrings can also be easily made by texturing the silver discs with hammers or texture punches instead.

This is one of a series of video classes, each one showing you how to quickly and easily make a lovely pair of earrings - sometimes two pairs - as part of my #52earrings challenge. I have challenged myself to design and film tutorials for 52 pairs of earrings in 2017, and I'd love you to join me.

In each video I will show you the materials you will need, explain the tools and equipment and go through all the steps needed to create your own lovely pair of earrings. Along the way I will share with you the same hints and tips that I teach in my jewelry making classes and private tuition so that you become more confident with your techniques and design skills with each class that you watch.

This class is for jewellery makers of all levels of experience from complete beginners upwards.

The equipment needed for the project is explained in the videos and also listed on a downloadable document that covers all of the tools that I will use in future earrings video classes as well so you can plan ahead! All the equipment listed can be used for a variety of other jewellery making projects.

1. Silver Swings Earrings: my name's John to me, I'm a joy design and shooter from South Coast, the UK, and welcome to the Silver Swings areas. The earrings were no soldier project, but we will need a couple of pieces from soldering kids, especially small blowtorch, and were going to be using that to four balls on the end of two pieces of wire that to go to hold in place the ovals of the main feature of the earrings. This class is next sentence reduction to using a rolling mill, and I'm going to be using mind text to the ovals are only. Mill is a great piece of workshop kits judicially used to change the thickness and shape a sheet on Dwyer as well as in Boston textures. I used mine almost everyday in my CDO on recycling lots of my sterling silver scrap with it . However, don't worry. You don't have a rolling mill. You can still make the earrings. You can just leave silver pain or hammer texture. Instead, on the series, we look just the silver swings. Hearings have passed the 52 hearings challenged. I set myself in 2017 to design and filled tutorials for 52 different pairs of earrings. I'd love it if you would join me in the challenge. Silver Swings Earrings - equipment: Let's go through the equipment that you're going to need to make the earrings in this class . I'm going to use a discussion to cut two circles out of silver sheet. Andi, I'm going to hit the punches on the disc cutter with the old hammer. I don't want to use my nice hammers, so use directly on the silver. Remember, because the punches damaged the hammers, he put marks into them. I don't want the marks get transferred into my silver. Once it is to cut, I'm going to send them through the rolling mill to em boss, a nice texture into them. A rolling mill is a great piece of workshop equipment, and I use mine virtually every day there, traditionally used to shape silver sheet and y into different sicknesses and two different profiles. And I do that quite a bit, either, rolling out quite a sick piece of silver sheets that is not available surface area that's left over from a different project, rolling it through the rolling mill to make it sinner, but wider so I can use it, for example, to make a pair of earrings. This is a great piece of equipment to help you to recycle your scrap, but in this class, we're going to use the rolling mill for texture ring. If you send your silver or your copper sheet through the rollers of the rolling mill with something that has got texture, that texture will get in Boston into the metal sheet. You can use a whole wide variety of materials. I produced some lovely textures from feathers from Dr Leaves. Amazingly, paper can give a fantastic texture. You can also buy specially made grass texture plates and card texture sheets. I produced my own card texture sheets by laser engraving patterns that are designed into sin card. But I'm going to be textural. One pair of the discs is I'm going to cut with one of my text sheets. The other pair, I'm going to be texturizing with a piece of material that's actually a cut off from a blind that was a bit too long. Once the discs textured, I'm then going to dome slightly to give them a bit of a curve. I'll be using wooden punches for the domain block because they will be not junk litter. The texture that I have in Boston to the silver. The steel punches would actually help to flatter nor hammer out the texture that I just put in, which would obviously be a shame. And you're going to need a drill and a one millimetre Drillbit to drill a hole at the top of the bottom off the disks that the rolling mill were actually turned into ovals because it would have stretched him out. I'm going to use my lovely bench press drill, but you could use a hand drill. Justus. Well, the rest of tools are actually for making and shaping the ear wives with a Sharpie and rule that to help me mark out the links of no 0.8 millimeter wise, I'm going to need on the sharpies. Also useful for marking where want holes to be drilled on the ovals, the wire cutters, the flat nose pliers the night on your pliers on the round nose Pliers are for cutting and shaping of the wire. I'm going to be using a stretch Mandrell to help me form the ear wires. Besides, I said many times before, using sharply was actually worked just as well, and the needle file is there to round off and smooth off the end of the wire. So the year wise go for you the holes in your ears comfortably. I'm going to hammer section of the ear wise to strengthen them with the punishing hammer. Andi, I'm going to have a thumb on top of the bench block on top of the leather cushion when I cut the discs. I'm also going to put the discussion on top of the leather cushion to help keep the noise down. Although this is a project that doesn't easily soldering, there are a few pieces of equipment that we're going to need from the soldering kit, so show those to you now. 3. Silver Swings Earrings - a few pieces from the soldering kit: we're not gonna be doing any soldiering on this project. You are going to need a few bits as the soldering kit. I've got a pair of er section two eaters Hold the while I'm working with it and a pair of brass tweezers to put the wire in and out of the pickle. The tweeters is sitting on a couple of soldiering bricks on bond. They are intensity young, couple off site tiles order that she's going to add a bit of fireproofing to my work desk. We're just going to need a small blowtorch for the project, but I've got the high technical quench pot for cold water. Andi, my slow cooker for the safety pickle, says. I can call the work down and clean it up. Remember, Sterling Silver has got 7.5% copper in it, and thats reacts with the heat and oxygen the flames because copper oxides, the safety pickle helps clean it off, and it worked best and fastest When it's a war, the plastic sieve is there because it can save you a little bit of time and trouble. I'm going to drop the finished head pins inside the sieve in the quench pot to call them down and then put the sieve in the safety pickle. It would just mean that I don't have to go fishing around at the bottom of the quench pot or the safety pickle forward by small, thin head pins if you're going to follow that tip. So please make sure that your sieve is just plastic. You don't want any metal bits in there. Otherwise, they could cause problems that could actually discolor the silver when it's inside the pickle. Last but definitely not least our powers Safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes. Please do look after them. 4. Silver Swings Earrings - materials: thesis the materials that you're going to need to make the earrings as usual. I'm gonna be making year wires out of no 0.82 millimeter round wire. I'm going to be cutting the desks out off study silver sheet. I'm going to make two different sizes of earrings. I'm going to make one pair. That's got very large disks. Andi, I'm going to use no 0.7 millimeter sheet for that. Not 0.6 millimeter would do. Probably Justus. Well, and then I'm going to make a smaller pair of earrings. I've got a piece of scrap silver here that I've already sent through the rolling mill to sing it out. It was actually quite a thick piece of sheet with quite a small surface area leftover from making held cufflinks. But he didn't have wide enough surface area to really be used for anything else. So I sent it through the rolling mill and its lengthened it, but also thinned it. So it's going to be suitable for cutting to smaller discs from for this project. 5. Silver Swings Earrings - cutting the discs: the two different sizes of disks that I'm going to cut out our 12.7 millimeters or half an inch on 19.1 millimeters or 3/4 of an inch on the reason why I'm using thicker sheet to cut out the bigger disks is because if I was used in sheet at that size, that would be a little bit too flimsy. They wouldn't hold their shape well, so I'm going to start with smaller dish. That would check. Yeah, it goes in that whole good moved a bit sort of the way that we don't need. I'm working on a leather cushion. Both sue protect my wooden surface, which also because the other question will keep the noise down a bit us. Well, remember, my discussed er is a nice, accurate one with nice shell pages so I can make the best use of the sheet. I can just get the edges out of sight. There we go, but cut very close to the H is the silver sheet. So just goes in using an old hama. It's the first disc, but you can see nice and close to the edge is there was hardly any silver on that stage. It all did very well there. The 2nd 1 again. Have you looked down the hole making sure it's nice and close to the edge? Does that discussed the way? That's the two smaller discs that we need the larger disk and that holds that going to have to be a little bit more careful about where I use the silver? Just make sure so I can actually get to discs of the right side out of there. I can just move the silver so that edges just out of sight. Quite. It's a little bit more difficult when the edges I wore over the place because of other pieces that you cut out the sheet that is one one disc. We have notices that that dis took a little bit more effort to cut out. That's both because it's a bigger disc. Andi, because it's thicker sheet. A 2nd 1 These are going to make nice, big, dramatic hearings. There we go. We're happy with position of that. So we get to person discs. Andi, I've even got some silver sheet of both sicknesses left over, so I'm going to be able to use for something else. Now these discs need one more job done to thumb before I in texture them. So show you that next. 6. Silver Swings Earrings - annealing: hammering silver so hard to cut the disks using the disc, Attar has left the discs very work hardened everything that you do to metal work hardened to split, even pulling. Why, for your fingers work hardens. It gets the point where you can't actually do anything more to it. Now I want to put a texture into these using the rolling mill. Andi. It's going to be a lot easier to do so if I softened the metal already to soften the disks to make them easier to work with. I'm going to a Neil them, which basically means that I'm gonna heat them up to slightly below solving temperature, holds them at that temperature for a little bit and then quench them to call them down quickly. If I don't quench them, that doesn't complete the healing process. A kneeling just means each treating there's something you can do to help you recognize. Whether you've got your silver at the right temperature for kneeling is to put a Sharpie mark on the silver. Once that Sharpie mark has bean virtually burnt off from, maybe only the ghosts of the mark remains on the silver. Then you've got the right temperature, So I'm going to use small, great touch. You're You can see the Sharpie mark burning off to hold it that temperate shirt for that under the six seconds, do the same with the other one, then move on to the small ones. They don't need as long because there's so much smaller and thinner. So it takes. Now I need to quench these. Why do you may notice that the small discs aren't nearly as dirty as the large ones? That's because they had already being heated up several times. Remembers I said the silver I was using to cut small disks, her being a piece of scrap that I rolled thinner and longer through the rolling mill so he'd ended up being a thickness onda large enough surface area to be able to work with whilst I sent that silver through the rolling mill. At some point, it became too hard to work with, so I kneeled it just as I've done with the disks here, quenched it and then popped it in the pickle to clean it up. I'm putting it in the pickle, removed some of the copper from the surface, so there's less copper. If I get these back out again now they've been quenched, T. J va. That even just putting that in the the quench part here is the Quench. Portis picked up a little bit of pickle as Cem as I've bean rinsing silver that's come out of the pickle pot that's actually started to clean up already. But that's basically that did not form as much stock civilization because it was already being in the pickle at least once and didn't have much copper at the surface. As a result, this one was a piece of silver that hadn't been heated up. Tool Hannah calling the pickle before and so there was still a federative copper at surface for organization to form. I'm still going to put them both in the pickle to make sure that they are nice and clean for the next stage. 7. Silver Swings Earrings - introducing the rolling mill: distance of being a Neil, so they're now ready to be textured with the rolling will. But before I send them through the rolling mill, I wanted to tell you a little bit about how a rolling mill works about the different types of rolling mill On also, how to set up your rolling mill. To get the best results, you can get different types of rolling mills to suit different budgets. I start stuff with an Indian made value rolling mill, one that quite often comes with a bright blue painted metal body. The advantages air. Starting off with that rolling mill was obviously the price. It wasn't that expensive. Rolling Mills go, but it was quite a small one, and after about five years, I outgrew it. I needed a rolling mill with wider rollers, so so I could roll out bigger pieces of sheet metal. And by that stage, I also wanted to invest in Rolling Mill That would last me really last me a lifetime. So I swapped up to a dust and rolling mill Durst in our British brand, and their quality is absolutely fantastic. They're rolling mills very easy to maintain, and when I upgraded. I ended up with a rolling mill with wider rollers with sections on their grooves that you can see on this rolling mill that I can use Rolling out wire and also the wrong with themselves are much, much better quality. They are beautifully smooth, hardened steel, and if you look after him properly, they will last you a lifetime. Whatever type of rolling mill you have, you're going to need to make sure that you secure it to a work surface. Otherwise, as you turn the handle and put pressure on the rollers and the piece of metal that's being rolled through, you will start to move the rolling mill about it would be a lot more difficult to work with . There are two things that dictate how close together the rollers need to be, and you move the rollers close up and further apart by turning the handle at the top. The two things that determine how close that I would need to be are not just the thickness of the metal that you're rolling through, but its wits as well. The wider the piece of sheet you are sending through your rolling mill, the greater the pressure needs to be, and so the tighter the roads need to be on, the more effort is vegetate. To turn the handle and to send the sheet through the rolling mill Now, as I said, you need to set up your rolling mill to get the best results you need to turn. Handle the top to move the rollers closer together or further apart, so that you can get, in this case the best impression in the piece of silver sheets that you're sending through . And it really, really is worth doing. Some practicing with some copper sheet. I've got some pieces of copper sheet here on Duthie cutoffs over my texture sheets, my laser engraved Texas sheets I produce that I sent through with them and you can see the results I got. I sent through different wits on different sicknesses of copper. On on the back of a piece of copper are the wits off the peace, the thickness off the piece on also the setting that I found best on my rolling mill. It's worth keeping a record off your practice sheets so that when you come to set up for a new piece of equipment Hopefully, you just got to check your notes. Set the rolling will up and away you go the best quality Rolling Mills at my best, and we'll have a gauge at the top, and that will help you greatly in setting up your rolling mill. Don't take the numbers on those gospel truce because there might be a little bit of variation between the real between the rolling mills. But they are really good indicator, and you can actually see on the engage well I've put with a Sharpie a few different marks, those of the marks that show me where to set up the rolling mill for particular projects. No, I really don. Some testing on Dive worked out that for the larger disks to send them through with the later sheets, I'm going to need to set up my rolling mill at 0.75 on the gauge on DFO. Smaller discs with the blind fabric is I'm actually going to wrap all over on both sides. It's texture on both sides. I need to set up the rolling mill on a 0.35 so I'm going to do that now. So I set this up one point 75 about there. I like to have the silver on top of the sheet, so if I get a better view of what's going on, you may notice a swell. I've cut the sheet, so so that is longer than the disk, because the disk is going to be elongated on. What I don't want to do is cut it off to use act legs. That disk is now for the dis to become elongated, everything to run out of texture sheet so I wouldn't have enough text in which passed in it . So. But it set up went off there. Hold it between the rollers. Send it through. We'll have to see the texture on there. I'll show you close up later. It's actually I show you comparison. It's got nice. And overall, I could have got away with sending it through. Not such a tight setting. It did take a little bit of effort to send it through, but I wanted to make it really nicely over. I wanted to stretch it out, so I'm really happy with that. Did so Tonight's well, there we go to discs, sets up such a row through the small monster runner So smaller. This that need to be about sweet 0.5 on these ones. I've crossed that piece off the scrap material. That's far, far longer that she needs. I'm going to Foad the material over the disc. So disk is in there, so I guess personal by sites again. I'll show you close up this in a moment, but you can see how the difference me stretched out. Both have been sitting delicious. Well, savor this one. There we go. My two sets of discs rolled through now ready to be drilled shapes. Andi, I also need to make the iwas. 8. Silver Swings Earrings - drilling: use a sharp Peter Mark where I want a hole at the top and bottom of each mobile. And I put a one millimetre Drillbit in the drill to drill the holes. Remember, I've gone up to a one millimetre Drillbit because the discs they're going to be curved in a little bit on that curving would actually make the whole a little bit smaller. I usually use a 0.9 millimeter Drillbit to past North 0.8 millimeter wire through. But this time I wanted the whole to build, but bigger to start with because the carving is going to make it a little bit smaller. I want y to definitely go through. I've marked on the back of the larger ovals because sending him through the rolling mill has made them slightly curved. You can see that I take them backwards or forwards. If I was to drill through from this side, it wouldn't be quite so easy to stabilize the disc. So I'm going to do it through from the back to make life easier for me. So you remove the camera so you can get the best of you and drill the holes. So I put one of the smaller discs on top of the wooden block that I drill into. It supports the silver. I think I'm much actually need a A new ones soon. This is getting a little bit beaten up, but it starts to be quite a few years, so I can't complain. And it was a cut off from other projects such pay for anything forties, I say The fact is, lasted this long is actually a bonus. So I haven't switched the drill on yet, so I'm just gonna double check that. I've got everything lined up nicely happy with that? I moved the block of which, as I put 100 down one. - As you get more confident to more familiar with your drill, you can actually, if you're careful, leave it running whilst you position the next hole. But do get competent using the drill first. Yeah, - quite often. When you drill holes, you're left with little birds shop. It's around the edges of the hole, which are both unsightly. And don't feel very nice and show you an easy way of getting rid of them. This is a larger birth in the one millimeters I build it. It was both sides about birth. The next thing is I need to do is any of the disks, because sending them through the rolling mill to give them a texture has worked hard on them. It's made them too hard to shape some, as I want to before I put them on the air wives. So I shall kneel them on, then show you how we're going to shape them. 9. Silver Swings Earrings - shaping the ovals: right then the ovals have bean a Neil's, so they are soft enough to shape. So I'm going to use the domain Brooke that the wooden punches on the old hammer to give them a curve so that they fit nicely onto the ear wise. Remember, I'm using the wooden punches so that I don't damage the textures I put into the disks using metal punches and so much in the disks between the steel dish and another metal punch that would smooth or hammer out texture. And I don't want to do that. So start with largest ones. Start off with me. Very large dish. He's well, the biggest wouldn't punches I've got. See, that's given a nice curve to the same to the that one. So whatever I do toe one disc, I'm going to do to its pair and then move on to smaller dishes. I might need to change the wooden punched I'm going to use to end up with a smaller wooden punch. Okay, The reason why I didn't go straight for this smaller dish was that you don't want to move the silver too far at a time. If I had gone straight from having a for that overall into this dish and try to hammer hitting. I would've ended up with creases. It wouldn't be a nice, smooth curve. My life. I quite like that. I think I'm going to go a little bit further and I'm going to swap to a smaller punch. The reason I'm swapping to a smaller punch is such the bigger one wouldn't fit into the smaller dishes. So well, you don't want your punch to be touching the side of the dish. Guessing very close to look so want. This will probably be the last dish to need right now to the same tricks path. Okay, I'm happy with that curve for the first person. A little bit like him, but torture shelves at the moment. So when she used the same technique to the smaller pair and this time I'm going to start off in the dish that I used as she that one start off from on the smaller dishes as smaller and with more punch. Andi See really fit in there? Yeah, the last one. So we go two pairs of textured and don't ovals. They just need polishing. Andi, I also need to make the wires. 10. Silver Swings Earrings - preparing the earwires: the're wise thes airings, essentially head pins made out of no 0.8 millimeter wire. I'm going to need four of those because I've got two pairs of earrings time making, and this is a set up that I used to make head pins, no matter what game. You're white amusing. No, everything is set up in this way. So it's nice and safe toe work, and I've got the blowtorch on the left hand side because I'm right handed. Somebody want my right hand over here. I don't want have to lean over. The blowtorch, appear to be able to work. So going to hold links of why, in my right hand, I'm going to take each one in turn and hold it in reverse action. Tweezers, talk tweezers that you have to push to be able to open and hold them in the flame. The ball will form at the bottom. The why will melt automatically into a little ball. And when the ball's about the right size, I'm then going to drop the work in the quench parched. That's over here on my right, so everything set up so it's nice and safe is our slate child so fireproof because soldering blocks behind us here, sue about a little bit more protection. Everything set up. So I got leave the flame over here, and then it goes into the question part. So show you how we make them china talk. Sean should just about to be able to see in the picture that that is the tip of the blue flame. That's the area that we want to work in because that's the shortest area. As I said, silver balls are automatically as you melt it, so folded just in the blue tip. There I just sit a bit brighter than going red. Go find a ball starts to form when they're happy with the size of that, drop it in the quench pot. Let it cool down. Keep everything nice, is safe. I prefer to move the wire around a little bit in the flame buying that That gets me the smoothest, neatest Andi. Most importantly, for May, the most sensual ball. He doesn't sit at one end or so one side of the wire or the others. Actually, six limited when the flame offs. It's nice and safe. I can show you close up of those forehead pins. Silver Swings Earrings - polishing: the other piece is for The earrings are made now. Got the start of four year wires on. Do we like the shape of thes hammered and don't ovals. So I need to go in the tumble it to be polished on there will be putting together. 12. Silver Swings Earrings - finishing the earrings: I've retrieved eight pieces of shiny silver from the tumble polisher, so now it's time to put them together to make to persevere. Rings. I had to look at the ball. Was time melted on the end of the pieces of wire that I'm going to use to make the ear wise ? Andi. I think these two are the best, much Andi Thies to go well together. It's ah, it's a good idea to just have a look at the balls at the end because your notion machine, they are going to be cited different sizes and just choose the to go best together if indeed you have more than two shoes. So that thing I need to do is to threat a piece of wire through HCFC the holes the bottom hole there, Andi through the whole of the tropics well, and then pull the UAE through took a little bit of effort to push through the holes, which, actually, now it's gone through nicely. If you find that the holes in your ovals are a little bit too small, then use the drill bits to make a little bit bigger again, or maybe the end of around needle file instead because remember that as the ovals have bean don't the holes have bean strew rushing out a little bit, and that's also made them slightly less wide. So they That's why we started off with bigger holes than we usually need for this length of the right of sorry for this engage of wire do the same with the next one in the bottom and through the trump and then the same with the other ones as well. Well, these were a bit tighter, and the small ones are definitely a little bit tighter, but it's still going through nicely. The next thing I need to do is to bend the wise over to form here. Waas just going to use an island, your pliers just to cool the wise too much. They were sure that they are completely smooth on straight. My point starting out with any kinks in the why I'm going to use the third step. The middle step on the steps Mandel was I usually use on. Just think what that want to bend right about there. Number the first ones quite quick and easy to bend round 2nd 1 the second, but more bitter time. Start to bend it round and then check. He's only easiest to line up next to each other to say with the ovals bending around, twisting round like that. But that's this one. Stuffy, but to go so it's too long. I'm going to bend this section of wires a bit more, make it shorter. Still a tiny bit tudo, uh, easy to mission up against each other, Holding the three ovals like that. And that's looking good fish pointing up one round. I'm gonna do the same with the other pair of these. A little bit short, right? Yeah. Yeah, about that one.
