About This Class

We can do a lot with these amazing iPads, especially when we make use of the numerous tools we have out there to help us. Procreate, as of now (just before Procreate 5 comes out) is an absolutely amazing tool and I rarely use anything else. However, when shifting designs into place for seamless repeat patterns within this app, there is a little bit of guesswork involved and it is difficult to get a pixel-perfect design. I learned how to make seamless repeats with a tiny bit of help from an additional app called Pixelmator (and even better, Affinity Designer!) and now I’m addicted to making perfectly seamless designs for fabric, wallpaper, and gift wrap. Join me in class to learn all of my tricks!

1. Intro: Hi. My name's Jennifer Nichols from Layla and Post Studio. I have a fascination with seamless repeat patterns. I can't seem to stop making them. So I started a spoon flower shop and I'm loving every minute of it. I get asked a lot how to make the patterns and procreate, and it's hard to explain. But it's easy to show, and I have decided to use what I know to create my own, my very first skill share video. We'll do some simple patterns with flowers, some overlapping patterns with various, um, repeat patterns that have transparent backgrounds and then some more complex patterns. We'll use procreate, the symmetry tools to make the flowers and one small portion out of procreate in an app called pixel mater. I hope you can join me for class and let's get started. 3. Canvas set- up and Designing Elements: going to procreate and create a campus that is either 10 by 10 or 12 by 12 inches. I would probably go with a smaller when, if you have a regular iPad, not on iPad pro, because you're more limited on layers in those ipads. If you don't know how, if you've never created a custom canvas, and if you don't have a 10 by 10 or 12 by 12 and your list, just go to custom canvas size switch two inches for a little 12 height. 12 mines already on 300. You can change yours right there. It tells you how many layers you're allowed right here. 37 create and you have your canvas over here in the wrench tool under canvas. You can go to campus information and see a whole bunch of information about your canvas. The pixel dimensions. So 12 inches at 300 d. P. I equals 3600 pixels by 3600 pixels. One layer is being used. 37 layers are allowed. How much time you've spent, how many strokes you've made? Pretty neat information. There. You will need to know this pixel dimension later, when we go to pixel meter. Before we start, we're going to be doing a flower design and using the symmetry options. So go in back in the canvas drawing guide and turn that on edit drawing guide. Come down here to symmetry radial symmetry, which means that everything will be curving the same direction instead of being neared images. And you can change your color of the guide to whatever color works for you. If you had a dark colored campus, you might wanna light colored guide. I am going to create a dark colored guide for the video so that it can be seen more easily . I just turned up the thickness and opacity, so you make sure you're on symmetry. Oh, sorry. Switch to radial symmetry and rotational symmetry so you'll have this guide click done. And what you're going to notice is that your layer says assisted. Any new layer that you add won't say assistant and to, um, to turn into an assisted layer, you tap on it and you click drawing assist. All that means is that the symmetry will be working on those layers. So we do need that on all of our flower layers. I am going into the inky in section, and I'm choosing Studio pen just for this video. If you have a favorite pen, ink bleed, dry ink, those air really popular, you can choose whatever penny, like I'm using black for our video. And again, that's up to you. So for for simplicity, for this repeat pattern, we're just gonna make some simple flower shapes. If you're not comfortable making flowers, you're welcome to just do you know, little swish marks with that symmetry tool. It'll look like a flower or some sort of design, no matter what. I'm just gonna make a few types of flowers on different layers. So there's when I'll turn that one off, go to a new layer. I went to erase a tiny bit right here. So to make sure I am still in my studio pen for my razor, you just tap and hold the eraser and it switches to whatever current brush you were on. Decrease my size and just give a little swipe here. The reason that little spot. Okay, turn that one off at any earlier tap on that layer and click drawing assist. Come back to my brush here. Let's see How about one with ah ho. Much of little pals. Okay, new layer. Turn that one off. Tap on that layer. Top drawing assist extra says assisted. And then I want to do one. That's very crazy. Little starts at the end of these little speaks, and I don't know if you can see that middle. I think I'm gonna open that up a little bit. Go back to my studio pen on the eraser and do a few little strokes. There may be a couple little dots to It's a little bit hard to see with the guidelines. Okay, so we have four. Let's do one more. So we have a one with a kind of a few big pedals and spiky pedals, whole bunch of little pedals. And how about how about one? How about I get my pencil? How about when? Oh, I did not turn my drawing assist on. Here we go. I am gonna zoom in so you can see that. And how some flowers have a lot of stay hman in the middle. Sell, start like that and maybe make some square pedals. Okay, so them are a little too square. Okay, So we have our four flowers. And in the next video, I will show you how we get these all set up for a seamless repeat first step. 4. Prepping Your Design Layout: we don't need our guideline anymore. So if you go to the wrench tool and turn off drawing guide, it turns off the guide. The Estes still there. So let's go ahead and tap those layers. Tap the drawing, assist again and get that turned off. We don't need that anymore, and I'm also going to group all of the's into one group. That way I have an original set. Okay, so I need to come back to it. I'll duplicate that group by sliding to the left and clicking, tapping, duplicate. This is the group I'm going to work with. For now. Let's just name this one originals, and we'll just leave it alone. If you're worried about accidentally using it, you can actually swipe and lock it, and then it won't let you do anything to it. For now, I'm not too worried about that, but we are. You know, what we do need to do is turn that completely off. This is the one that's on. Now. I want to put a grid on here by going back into the wrench Tool drawing guide, edit drawing guide two D grid and turn that grid size all the way up, since that's hard to see on camera. I will Go ahead, make that one black. A swell turned the thickness and opacity up and tapped in. When you're making a seamless repeat pattern, try to get your elements, your objects, whatever you're using to cross over these two lines. Some went on this initial set up because that is what's going to be the outside edge of your design soon. Once we use pixel mater, go ahead and select the flower that you're on. Turn on the uniform so you can change the size evenly. Maybe rotate support some variation. And the biggest thing to remember is when you're placing your images, you cannot touch the edges so you can get really close to the edges. But you cannot touch the edges. All right, we'll get our second flower. Highlight the layer selected and just trying to keep in mind that center line in that horizontal line. I actually I'm going to leave that the size that it is. So I'm not going to worry about that. Select another flower. Looks like uniform is still on down here with this little pop up down here, it blocks my canvas. So I'm going to un select, move my canvas up a little and then select. I don't think it matters too much. If you rotate it, it's pretty even all the way around. They will make that one smaller, this person variety, and put it right over here. We're making this super simple, so we're not overlapping any flowers for this particular lesson. Let's grab another one. Select uniform. If you want to make something a little bit bigger, you can probably do that. But not too much bigger. Not in procreate, not with a pixel program. You can do that with vectors, but not pixels. And I've come pretty close to decide without touching. And I'm getting my last flower and rotated a little. Looks very straight across. And it's kind of overlapping this one right now and don't want to make that one smaller. So I'm going to mess with that one. Maybe rotating. Yeah. Okay, so we have all of our flowers. Oh, I'm already seeing a problem. I'm seeing a row of flowers. So with experience, I know that that will really look like one continuous long row in the repeat pattern. So I will move this center. Actually, I will also move this one down. Just offset that row. That might be good enough right there. So I don't really have a straight row here and I don't really have a straight road there. I have plenty of overlap on that horizontal line and that vertical line. Those are going to be cut right on those lines. If you can imagine that. And then those will be the outside edges of the repeat pattern. I have left these corners somewhat open because those air going to combine into one space in the middle and then I can add more flowers. I'll have room to have a variety of flowers in a bigger space. If I really put some flowers in those spaces and ended up with a small space after I use pixel mater, I might only have room for one flower in the middle, which is fine again. This is all experimenting. In the next video, I will show you how to get this already for bringing into pixel mater 5. Pixelmator OR Affinity Designer: an updated video: Hi, everyone. I'm showing you a different way to make seamless repeat patterns That's not using pixel mater because they discovered a color profile issue. And let me show you what the issue is so far that I've figured out, um, when you create a new canvas. So let's say you're creating a brand new campus clubs. You have these color profile options, and I'm pretty sure that this display p three it's on the procreate website somewhere. I read about it a while ago. I just don't remember the details, but it is a new kind of updated, fancy, nicer way to for style of RGB. Um, so maybe this is sort of unique to procreate right now because of procreate five coming out and kind of having more ability. This profile right here is the profile that pixel mater imports back into procreate with, so I don't know if it's on the pixel mater side. There seems to be no way to adjust the color profile in pixel mater, but when you import your design back into procreate, it comes in with this color profile. So I know it's hard to see, but when you look at these side by side. This is the one I just imported from pixel mater. This is my original. They look fine. However, I'm gonna go ahead and copy this and paste it into my original. So let me show you. First of all the color profile that this one has canvas information, color profile. It has this other color profile if I had If I really want to use pixel mater, which is totally fine if you've already purchased it and you know how to use it. Four seamless repeats. I would start my original with that same color profile. I haven't tested it, but I'm assuming that that will fix the problem. But this color profile on the original is in this new p three. So when I take that other page the other layer from the imported profile the imported pixel mater file and paste it into here, you can see right away. Hopefully you can see that on the screen. These two pinks let me move. The gonna move this over so you can see them next to each other and same way in says really noticeable on the pinks. It is a little bit a little less noticeable on that green and yellow here, and the orange was pretty noticeable. A swell, um, so these do not match. It's a slight, but it's enough that it kind of bothers me. So I found out there's a way to do this step in affinity designer, and that's what I'm going to show you in the little bonus video at the very end. So the process for this class that I've already recorded and posted, um, I'm adding this particular video months after I have posted that class using pixel mater. This didn't used to be an issue, and, um so if you're seeing this before you start the pixel mater route, you might want to go ahead and get the app called affinity designer. And here's a nice screenshot of the opening screen on the APP. This is what the APP icon looks like in the APP store. It's a serif app. It is, I believe, $15. It iss a vector app for creating vector art. This is an amazing, amazing app, and it's worth the money. If you feel like you're going to want to do more work than just procreate work, I hear a lot of people getting this app and really only meeting procreate, an affinity designer, to do most of their works. This is a very full featured app, and there's no subscription costs just like procreate. It's just a one time cost so you can get the, I think, $5 pixel mater app or this one, and I'll go ahead and add a bonus video at the end of this class to show you how you use this instead of pixel mater. And I won't be showing you all the details of this app because I am still learning those myself. But I know enough to get you through this basic step for creating repeat patterns. And it works really, really well and is actually a little bit better quality when it imports back into procreate . All right, I hope that makes sense in this. This isn't too confusing on because I'm kind of adding this after the fact to this class and let me know in the discussions tab if you have any questions. All right. So I guess I might suggest going ahead and going through the class up until you get to the pixel mater part and then maybe go ahead and watch that as well. And then, um maybe just watch the whole thing. Just so you have kind of a double idea of how to do this, because basically, the only reason we have to go come out of procreate is because we can't snap the tiles into place. So this is my preferred way to get it pixel perfect where they snap into place and you don't have to do any guesswork with tapping to move things ever so slightly. 6. Using Pixelmator for Pixel-Perfect Layout without Guesswork: we have our pattern all set up here for the first stage. We don't need this guideline on anymore. We can go ahead and turn that off, and we need to save this as a PNG Um, as a PNG, you have a lot of flexibility later to do things in the background. So turn the background layer off and there's another step. I'm going to go ahead and shrink that group down. Add a layer and shoes, a very bright color. Whatever you have going on on the page. She was a very contrast in color to do this next step on this fresh layer, we need a temporary layer with some color on two opposing corners when you're saving as a P and G, if you just saved it without this layer, the P and G size would only go to the edges of thes flowers, and we need it to go to the edge of the actual campus. So the panji saves to wherever there's actual pixels of color. And if you have a little diagonal here, you have color all the way to the top, to the right and to the left and to the bottom okay, I hope that makes sense now. We need to save it. Go to the wrench tool share, save it as a PNG. We will be erasing those red marks later, so don't worry about it. You just need to make sure they're not. Even though it's on a new layer, you need to make sure it's not overlapping, something that's already for made for your repeat pattern when we were in campus canvas information, we have 3600 pixels by 3600 pixels. We need to remember that for pixel mater. So swipe up, Going to pixel mater Tap the plus sign. Create image custom image right down here. The pixels you can change to whip 3600 height 3600. Step outside of that box and then tap Create. There's your pixel mater campus, and if you slide your finger two from the left to the right Over here, you'll be able to see your layers. It doesn't let you go to zero layers, so we will delete the white layer. After we bring in our P and G tap the plus sign all photos and there's R, P and G. Okay, now we could delete the white layer, tap on it and tap Delete. We need four duplicate images of this PNG. We're not changing the size, and at this step, we will change it later. When we check our pattern to duplicate this tap on the layer top duplicate temp duplicate Tep duplicate. It doesn't matter which one you tap. I'm just trying to show you because I know these are hard to see on camera that they are there. Okay, we have four duplicate images and we're going to be moving them into the corners Over here . Over here. Down here, Down here. It doesn't let us grab from the transparent part, but if you grab a color, let's see. I'm going to grab this orange color first tap on it and you'll see these blue dots pop up. That means you have a layer selected tough on the orange and start sliding to the middle. And you will see yellow guidelines when you get there. When you try to hold my hand. Really study here. You can see yellow guidelines here and here, and that's how you know you're in the right spot. It's really easy to shift when you lift your pencil. Sometimes it's easier to do this with your finger. Oops. I just want to make sure I have the yellow one over here. I shifted it again. All right, tap on the next layer. We moved that one into this corner will move the next one into that corner. I am going to tap on a little bit of black over here. Start sliding, watching for my guidelines. They are. I'm going to double check that top on the next layer. Now we're going to slide one up into that corner. But see how? Grab some of the black hair and I'm gonna grab this orange corner because it's nice and thick and really resting my heel of my hand down on here for a study. Er lift of the pencil. And finally this. Lastly. And now you have the placement for your first step of your seamless repeat pattern to export this in to procreate. Tap the little paper with the arrow pointing up, and I am pretty sure the only way to save this as a PNG is to tap open in another Panji, find procreate in your list. Sometimes you might have to really dig for it Eventually. It will show up here every time if you use it often enough. All right, so it just sent it to procreate. We can leave this here. We're coming back to it to check our pattern later and imports into procreate. It does not import into the file we were working in. It comes into a brand new file and it's always the very first file in the gallery. So if you were way down and working somewhere within a stack way down there, it doesn't matter. You have to come way back up here to the very first file in your gallery. And as you can see, it looks blank. It has done that for me every single time. But it's not blanket. If soon as you tap on it, you'll see it. It doesn't look like a Panji just because procreate has its background layer and erase time to be Reese. The orangish red marks there. We don't need those anymore. And we have our seamless repeat pattern. For the first step, you can see how this repeats over here. This repeats up here and now we need to use some of our flowers that we made to fill in down here. In the next video, I will show you how to do that. 7. Finishing Your Pattern: So we've brought in our P and G that we created in pixel mater. I want to bring it into the original file because I like to just keep them all in one file . If I have enough layers to do that, so tapping on the layer copy and then go out into the gallery and go into your original file I don't need this later That has the orange on anymore so I can delete that. And I'm going to hide this original layout at any layer three fingers white pieced I as soon as you can diesel ect that paste. Because if you do one little tap when it selected and you do a tap anywhere, it'll Majette over and then you won't have a pixel perfect design in the end. Okay, so we have our finished first step. I guess this would be the second step. Here is the first step and we bring it into pixel mater and have our second step complete. We saved our originals and you can copy and paste. We have unlocked right now, so let's unlock them. You don't have to use every single one of these again to fill in this space. Maybe just back up a little bit and think about what you want. I think I'm going to add another one of these dark, crazy flowers up here. So I'm going to duplicate that because I still want to keep my originals. Pull that out of that group and turn it on select uniform. Okay, but another flower over here Probably put this flower over here. A smaller version. Because if i this flower, then you'll be right next to it. If I put this flower, it'll be right next to the same flower. And I'm just going for a variety here, so I'll get that square flower square petaled flower. Bring it up there. Select uniform is already selected. I think that you can see when you shrink in. Okay. Pixel program. My line really got a lot thinner. Here's the original one in that same flower, but I think it's OK for this type of work. Normally, I wouldn't shrink that much. Let's put another flower right here. I think I will put this flower right there so duplicate that when you duplicate this bottom one is the original. The one above it is the duplicate And you want to be careful to keep all your originals down there. Select uniform is already on, and I think one final flower, this Samos. This one right here. Put it right over here. That one was this flower right here. Duplicate out of that group. Turn it on. Select Check for uniform. Okay, Sometimes been, something gets so small when you try to grab it, it it changes the size and one trick. That is a good trick to know for procreate is when you have something selected, you don't have to tap it to move it. You can tap anywhere on the paper, so that prevents you from accidentally changing the shape of the object. Okay, so we have filled in our space. I think I will put some dots in these open spaces here. If you're really needing to free up some layers, you can go ahead and flatten this group. If you're going to flatten a group, you need to make sure the whole group is on first tap, flatten, turn it back off cause we actually don't need that. These are the originals. And if you want, you could actually flatten this whole thing But let's wait and do that after we double check our pattern and make sure we're happy with it. If you flatten that right now in tow one layer, you won't be able to move them around. I'm going to add another layer for dots. She's black, increase my size, and I'm just making a random. So we have our doubts and our seamless repeat pattern part that we brought in from pixel mater and all of our new designs. We just added, It's really important to make sure that none of these new elements touch the edges either. So we didn't touch the edges with our initial design, and we're also not touching the edges with this design. If you, um, look at the image we brought in from pixel mater, it is the only thing that touches the edges. So let's turn in turn on all these other ones, and I like to group thumb. We need to save this as a PNG to check our pattern, and this time we don't need that extra layer to make the orange corners because we have pixels of color all the way up to all four edges. So it is ready to go to the wrench tool. Of course, the background layer has been off this whole time. Go to the wrench tool share P and G save image. And in the next video, we'll show you how you check your pattern. 8. Checking Pattern for Seams and Overall Design: Now we have our repeat pattern. We have the layer that we've made in pixel meter, and then we have all of the interior pieces that we filled in the gaps with. We need to double check the pattern, make sure there's no seams, and then it is ready to go. We will go right into pixel meter. That canvas that we had open before. Um, you can tap Cancel on that if it's still there, that window. And you should be at this window right here. Our this son, This look right here and you don't need these anymore. So you can delete them to delete you. Just tap, delete, tap, delete, tap, delete. We'll delete that one after we bring in the Pict PNG we just created, which is right here and now we can to leave the older one. Okay. Last time we moved things around without changing their size. This time we changed the size and we fit four of these onto one paper are onto one canvas to check the repeat and see if there's any. Seems also just to see if you like the overall look of the placement of your items. Okay, so tap on the blue dot in the corner and just start dragging it to the center. To get to the center. You'll see it says 1800 by 1800 or whatever half of your original campus sizes. If you started out with a 10 inch canvas, then that would be a 3000 by 3000 in pixel size campus, and then it would decrease to 1500. This one was 3600 decreasing to 1800. So it had also just snapped right into place. And that's the other way to to know. But I have noticed if I'm off if somewhere along the way I made a mistake, that number is one pixel off. And if that's the case, it will not. Uh, may make a seamless repeat once you have that decreased tap duplicate, tap duplicate, tap duplicate. 1234 We're just filling in these gaps over here again. You need to tap um, the black. These do snap right into place. I already see a problem. Oh, wait. No, it's not. I saw this gap right here. I realize that's a gap on the flower itself. So if you tap on one of these, you can see the center is right here. And once you know exactly where the center is, you can zoom in and look both directions and see how your repeat is doing. That's where it's gonna be off. If you did not follow all the steps precisely, it will be off right there. Shifted kind of like this or this. We already have the the white layer deleted since this was the canvas we created in part one. And this is already a PNG Because of that. I know you can't see that in the camera, but there is a grid showing here and now we just need to export it back in to procreate, just like we did before p a. G procreate. Appropriate. Go into the gallery to find that blink, but not really. And tap copy. Go into original design. Turn that group off. If your design looks great, you can go ahead and flatten that if you need to free up some layers for now, I'm just turning it off and then three finger swipe paste de select un select so you don't accidentally message that And that's your pattern. If you're not quite sure you can zoom out if you want to check it one more time with it. Even smaller. You can actually save this as a PNG because we've been exporting back and forth. We haven't really been saving them in the camera roll go into pixel mater until the bees old ones I actually usually stay in. I always work in 3600 by 3600 so I usually just stay in the canvas right here. And I don't have toe recreated every single time. And bring in that PNG we just made to eat that older one step on the little blue dot duplicate to placate duplicate. They're all just stacked up right here. What's good So you can see your your dark ones are more obvious this sort of zig Zack. But I like that I had a different design that had one more dark flower on it, and that was a little more random looking. But this is nice, too. It's nice because it's not in a straight line, that super obvious of, you know, dark straight line of of flowers. But that also might be a look you're going for, and now you can experiment and get any look that you like. So I'm not going to export this back over. Sometimes I do. I will show you an example of Of that, um, you don't need these anymore to save space. Just go ahead and get rid of them. To double check and make sure which went to delete this one has just that imported a piece from pixel later. And And then, of course, this one has all your original artwork in it. I have chickadees that I did that. I really liked the look of having them all on a whole bunch of them on a page. And so I kept. So here's my 1st 1 And then I duplicated and did a two by two grid. And then I duplicated again in pixel meter and brought it in. And I really like that. I think I may have done it one more time. I don't know if I kept it, This was back. Oh, here's the original layout. This was before I started to realize I didn't need to keep all of the's different stages. So I've tried to go through and consolidate. Um, and then I This'd is my version of a watermark. It's just on another layer, and I try to only post online with that. I don't post on spoon flour with that, obviously, because it would print. But just be careful, because artwork does get stolen digital artwork, especially in the next video, I will show you some things that we could do with your new flower design. 9. Creating a Seamless Textured Background: so now you have your flower design. I know it doesn't look very simple, but it's pretty simple because there were no overlapping flowers. I will show you how to do the overlapping of flowers. But before I do that, let's turn on the more the most simple version of this. I want to show you some things you can actually do with your design. It involves blending modes and making brushes, and, of course, you can sell it on sites like spoon flour and other fabric sites. I'm not sure exactly where else. I mostly do spoon flour if you take a look at this peace that I have, I have three different, seamless repeat patterns that I have created separately and then just combined those layers in this file. And I have some other versions because I have the layers all separate. I can really play around with color, and here's the the layers. So there's that very airy flower layer, and this layer is actually similar to what we did. Less flowery and more discussion If Tex Cherie you can see I used a textured brush, but I use this imagery tool just like we did and This slayer is a textured background layer . It's a little trickier, but and you can you can see the If you really look closely, you can see that. Seems there they're not really seems there. Just the symmetry of those seems coming together. But once you get other things added, then it's not noticeable. So I will show you how to create a textured background like this, and then I'll show you some things we could do with the flowers that we already made. So I'm going back into a 12 inch campus. It should already be in your list. Let me show you that again. In case you're somewhat new to procreate. If you just created that canvas from our tutorial, it'll be down here at the bottom of your list. You can hold it and move it around and move it to the top of your list. All right, so we're gonna go into the wrench tool into canvas. Turn on the drawing guide, go to edit drawing guide and symmetry. I am choosing quadrant this time. Let me turn the color of the guides dark and thicker, so we're not turning on rotational, and that's all we have to do is quadrant symmetry. So that means that when we have something over here, it's continuing over there, sort of. Okay, you need a blobby texture, a brush. I will go to the painting section that she's Oriental brush, go to dynamics and make sure it's on whit mix, and that the delusion is somewhere in the middle. It works better if you choose a color, because later you can play around with color in the hue, saturation, saturation, brightness said in. But if you start out with a gray that also works, you'll just have to change the color later. I have my brush size quite large, and I'm just kind of playing around. I'm trying to make it textured without looking uneven, if that makes sense, so I don't have a super obvious pattern. Once I feel OK about be outside areas, I'm turning, drawing assist off, and then I won't have that symmetrical look coming inside areas so much. This brush really gets watery if you move it around, so if you just tap it kind of blobs Inc. If you move it around, it smears in a little, so I'm kind of going for a little bit of both, and I think that's good. We will turn off the background and save that as a p A G save image and go right back into pixel mater. I used the same size campus. So I am deleting what I have here instead of starting new, bringing that in and then deleting this last older image there. And I'm gonna do the same exact method I did with the other seamless repeats dip a Kate duplicate duplicates of the first step is saliva eating them into place. I know you can't see this very well. You're you. You'll be able to see the yellow lines pretty well this time. Here we go. Tap the next layer, top the next layer and tap down here. You can also tap over here. If that's easier open in another app, P and G. I can already see this symmetry there, but that's OK. Procreate. It's way but going to procreate. Find that repeat and the gallery. So it's almost like one of those inks Platz, where you fold it fold this way too. Um, I am going to I'm gonna go to the smudge tool with that ink brush. I'm already on that brush. If you weren't already on it, then you can just happen. Hold and it will switch to whatever brush you're on over there. I'm just turning that brush size up. When a smear couple of these obvious spots out, I think that will be OK. It's all experimenting. As long as I am doing this in the middle and I'm not going to the edges. It should be fine. Okay, double check. Turn the background layer off. Safe. This one as a PNG save image and bring it back into pixel mater. Delete, delete, delete. Add this most recent one right here. Delete this older one. This time I will shrink the size duplicate, duplicate, duplicate. So I like how we they look we have here. I'm going to export into another ap P and G procreate going to procreate. And then this is our final, seamless, repeat textured background image. In the next video, I will show you what we do with this having lots of fun with this 10. Playing With Color and Blend Modes: before I call this a finished peace. I am going to smear this little, very obvious little rectangle out just a little bit. Oops, that was more than a little bit. There we go. And this is my final product. I am going to delete these other two, so I don't get confused later. Which happens to me sometimes. And this Lynn I could do lots with, especially if I turn that background layer off. But it's actually okay. Fits on. I talked to you about how we can't really mess with color limits. Gray, he's saturation and brightness doesn't do much at all. Well, for this case, it didn't do anything at all. I'm holding on to my original, so I will duplicate this and turn it off and I will tap on this in Alfa lock. The other way to Alfa Lock is 22 finger swipe to the right that turns it on and off. I can't zoom in on the layer, but you can see Alfa lock if you see a grid behind your image. Um, it's a very faint grid, so I see that it's on and destroyed it. Cheese, whatever color you want, tap on that and say Feel later. So that's one way you can get away with It doesn't matter what color you start out with for your pattern. You can change it just like that. You can go ahead and go into hue, saturation, brightness. I really like this orange, so I'm actually going to duplicate that and turn that orange layer off. And I am playing with this duplicate now. Normally, I don't duplicate duplicates because the quality does slowly decrease every time. I usually only duplicate an original, but for this texture background, it's really not going to show if you have a color to start with, you can really change everything right here with hue saturation, brightness. Um, you could go more saturated to less saturated, darker toe lighter. Reset if you don't like any of that. But at this point, you can also just change your color right here when you have Alfa lock on. So it's like that. Okay, what do you do with this texture background? One of the things you could Dio is bringing in this flower design that you created. I am going to turn this one off and turn this one on So this is the wind. It's a grid 1234 So it's four duplicates of your design. I will copy that layer and on a new layer. Three student, three finger swipe paste. Tough that sucked toe. UNSA liked it. Two. Finger swipe to the right toe Alfa Lock the flower layer. I will choose a medium grey tone because I'm about to play with the blending modes and I found graze to be pretty fun with blending modes. Phil Layer. Right now it's on normal, so this end right here gets you to all the blending modes. So here's a list for the darkened. Then you have all these other options. There are big descriptions about what those all means. I just play around with them multiple. A linear burn color bird. The other thing you can do when you're playing around with the's is also play around with the opacity, so that would be more obvious over here with color bird. If you wanted it more faded, you could decrease the opacity on that flower layer. Um, but for the overlay, I don't even know if you can really see the flowers here. It might be because of the great tone that I've chosen for the flowers, and I can check that I go into that magic wand, go to your hue, saturation brightness and just going right here to the brightness setting. I go higher. I can see it better well, and if I go lower, I can see it better. So that's darkening the gray that I've chosen and that's lightning it. I like the darker you can find all sorts of combinations that you like. You can also play around with the background color. It's really a lot of fun because you have a seamless repeat pattern on the flower layer, a seamless repeat pattern as the background texture layer. You can actually duplicate this, and it is a seamless repeat pattern. If you save this the way it is, it's a repeat pattern. So let me show you that really quick. I save it as a PNG, even though we don't have a transparent background save image, a PNG is, ah, higher quality image. It's called a lossless image type, and A J. Paige does kind of shrink the file a bit and helps with space. If you're crunched for space in a. Delete these and you barely notice it. The J Peg versus the PNG. But I just make it a habit. Okay, so this is a repeat pattern. Let's check that, though, because we've added to patterns on top of each other. So do brok duplicate deploy case tappin slide, tap it slide have been slide. That's beautiful. I love it. No seams, no seams on the flower layer. No seams on the texture layer. I do see a pattern in the texture layer. You can see these white Little Slash is right here, but it's a pattern. So that's what we do. We see patterns you could take this into. I don't know you could. You could save this. Try to make this into fabric on spoon flour or a background for a piece of art. You have lots of things, so this is just one thing you could do with your designs. This is kind of the reason for using the blend modes is it interacts. This layer will interact with the color that is behind it. So even though that flower layer is a pretty dark gray right now, it is showing up as orange when it's on the orange layer as a dark red when it's on the red layer black on that grey layer. Let's see what happens if we put no doesn't work if you put it the low. There are some blend modes that work under the color, the colors that are above it. So it's really just playing around with it and trying to figure out what you like. In the next video, I am going to show you another thing we could do with our flowers. 11. Making a Pattern Brush: I am going to go back to our pattern that has just the one by one the smallest version of the repeat and save this as a J peg. I have heard that J. Peg is it works the best for this, but I haven't tested it, So you're welcome to test it out. I do have the background turned on, so I have a black and white image. It's very important that you use black and it's very important that you use a square, not a rectangle black, white and square. I'm gonna provide a brush for you, and you can't duplicate that brush and make your own brushes. I don't know a lot about brushes. So this is kind of how I learned as kind of Ah, um, a short cut is when you have a texture brush, you can just go ahead and duplicate it and edit that brush. I have one here that has really hard edges, and the rest of these have soft edges. So just figure out which one you want to dio hard or soft duplicated, just like that tap on, either. When changed the name and go over to source. This is why that brush has a soft edge because it has the soft shape Here. You can change that in this the pro library. And she's when that has a herd shaped a hard edged circle. We're going down here to grain source. Insert photo, all photos and right here is the J peg that we just created. I want to go into a fresh campus and show you what we just did with that brush. Let's see. L choose Lake Purple. How about purple? Since you used a seamless repeat pattern to create this texture brush you can as long as you keep your pencil down. The whole time you're filling the page, you can't feel the whole page with your seamless repeat design. That doesn't mean that this page will repeat. If you look at the edges. Well, this one's actually pretty close. The top in the bottom are different, though we have the little spidery flowers here and on the other side. We don't They should be right here. So this image, if you were to save it and try to make it into a seamless repeat, it wouldn't work. But the brush that you added it could be a background to a different piece of art. You could fade that and draw some lettering on top, all sorts of things in your brush settings. You can also go to grain. So we did grain source. We changed the photo in green source, so if you go into brain, you can change the scale of your brush. Three fingers White clears a layer. Have that opacity turned down. You could also change your brush size every here. Let's clear that layer again. Turn that opacity backup and my brush size. Although yet lips My brush size did not affect the size of the flowers. It just affected how big this circle is. The size of the flowers was changed here in scale under green behavior. The other thing you can do is duplicate that exact same brush. Go back in to source and invert green. It's clear that layer and see what this did. So now you have. The color you've chosen is the background, and the white is actually this so you can change that. Although it's really pretty, is white. Okay, so I will provide you with a brush that you can duplicate and as many times as you want, and add your own flower designs or any designs that you want to turn into a texture brush. Just remember, they need to be the image from the seamless repeat pattern that you made. If it's this image or this image, it doesn't matter. Just make sure it's a square. If the seamless repeat, it's black and white and you save it as a J peg. I guess you contest it as a PNG. It does have to have a background. 12. Take It Up A Notch: we have created a simple flower pattern with no overlapping flowers. We have used it to make a brush and to use for overlay. He's in blending modes in another texture right there. Textured, seamless repeat background. Now I want to show you how to make a more complicated background with overlapping flowers. I am going to go through this a little bit quickly since it's using the same steps. The only difference is that I am will be erasing some flowers. Um, the the overlapping parts. The first thing I'm going to do is duplicate this file. Then I can use the flowers that we've already created. I will be deleting everything except the originals, and I actually I'll go ahead and duplicate the originals as well. It will call that duplicates again. For this. We're just simply placing the flowers, keeping them pretty big. I think I'll make that a little bit smaller, and then we're we're gonna be erasing where the flowers overlap so you can see here. I already have quite a big overlap right here. I was Ayman. I'm sure you can see that it's just a jumbled mess, and that's because thes flowers are outlined drawings. So if you had objects that were filled in, you could just simply have one over the other, and it would be just fine. I think I will make that one a little smaller and just put it right over here in the corner . For now, I am starting out with these three. Once we go into pixel mater and do our little moving trip technique, then they'll be somewhere space to fill in. Before we do that, we need to erase any overlapping flowers, so you need to decide which flower you want to appear to be on top. If you want this one to appear to be on top of this one, you need to a race part of this one. So it's really confusing sometimes to figure out which lines go toe which flower. So I will be raising part of this. I'm going to turn the opacity down so I can see that that's the flower that I want to get rid of. I need to actually select that layer a swell and go into your favorite brush for that. It doesn't really matter and erase anything that's inside the pedals of this flower. you can see a little bit over here. Sometimes you'll have areas that are not inside the flower, but you still want to erase them, For example, right here and right here. If you look at those spots when I zoom out, we don't really need those little sections. So if you just erase this and that, it's a little bit of a cleaner look. All right, so now you can see that looks like it's on top. I think I will go ahead and make this look like it's under this flower as well. So I really just need to come over here and do some more erasing for all of the things that are inside thes flower petals. Now I've erased where those two flowers, meat and those two flowers meat and I need to decide about these two flowers. This flower to me looks like it should be on top of this flower. I will erase parts of this flower. I'll turn the opacity back up on that one and turn it down on this one and also selected and just erase the parts that are inside that flower petal. Since these are all now really connected you can't move them. If you move them, you'll see that the race marks air. There. You can go ahead and merge them. That needs to be considered one layer. Right now, they really are stuck together. Since there's been erasing happening if you need to change something and you can come and grab an original. But otherwise they're kind of stuck remembering from the earlier lessons, we need to add a layer with a bright contrast in color. So what brush I'm on. I've been doing some other work in the two opposing corners, turned the background layer off and save this as a PNG. I'm going to go ahead and and speed up this part of the video, remembering that I have pixel mater bringing in this image four times, moving them into the corners. Ah, and then we bring it back into procreate. So they just finished making our repeat pattern in pixel mater and bringing it back into procreate, copying this layer over to this original work so we can keep it all together. And now we need to fill in the spaces. If you know that this flower is going to be under thes two flowers and you're going to be erasing. You can go ahead. I'll show you so you can see Here I am off the edge. This part would be showing. This part is not under that flower. So if I just moved it up a tiny bit, I couldn't. I can easily erase all of these bits that are right now appearing to go off the edge. I think I will leave this flower on top of this flower so I won't be erasing anymore. And that flower is done. Join that flower with that other layer. Since we did the erasing, we can't move that flower or all the race marks will be off. Go ahead and pull that up out of that group. Any to select black and studio pen. Just gonna extend this little pedal here. It doesn't have to be perfect. I might extend all of them, though, So we have a lot of overlapping flowers. We actually have a lot of gaps here. You're welcome to fill those gaps with more flowers. It's not really necessary. And this is your This is your repeat pattern. With this, it's just a bit more of a full look fewer gaps, and I can show you an example of one of the ones that I have made. Let's see if I can find it right here. Hardly any gaps at all. There's a couple little gaps here, but it also is a pretty busy pattern. So depending on what you want to use it for, it might might work for you. I have used this for I've made a brush with, and I've used it for this cat design. There's all sorts of things you could do. And that's how you do. A simple and a slightly more complicated repeat pattern, easy and procreate and a tiny bit of help from pixel mater. Remembering that we can layer different, seamless repeat patterns. As long as they all have transparent backgrounds, you'll be able to see them all together. If you look at the slide show, Um, at the very beginning of this, you'll see kind of a example of some of my designs. This one has, um, this aren't overlapping, has some leaves and flowers with the butterflies. I have another design that has the purple. Here it is. The Purple Leaves is its own seamless repeat pattern that I've made in a separate canvas, and then I brought it in and added it to this seamless repeat pattern. That's the one by one. And here is a two by two great of that same pattern. Here's a pretty complicated, overlapping, seamless repeat pattern. Remember, when you spend a lot of time making your design elements for each pattern? Don't erase the originals. I don't know if I have that. Oh, I have a venture of different color versions, but I have all my original elements all on separate layers, just like we did with our symmetrical flowers. Just, you know, copy and use those one of the ways you can, um, go ahead and have instead of instead of duplicating and your objects and using them a lot, you can save them as P and G's just each individual object. So, for example, if I just turned this one on in turn the background layer off, I can save this as a PNG in my camera roll. And if I do that for every single one, I was going to turn this back to what it was on. That's not quite it, but that's OK. I think there were some paper textures up here. So you have in your camera roll now a, P and G. That is just your one element, and then you can add photo. And if you have all of the's saved is PNG's. Then you can just add photo, add photo, Add photo any time you need that original, or you could duplicate the layers. But remember, try to just duplicate the original in their camera roll. This doesn't look like a PNG. It looks like it has a white background, but it's just when you zoom in, you'll see that it goes to black. And that's how you know it's a transparent background. For example, this one is, too. It doesn't look like it ISS. But then you zoom in. That looks solid black because our outline is black and now the background is black. Seamless repeat pattern you would like to create. Um would be wonderful to see you. Thank you. 13. Extra! Watch This If Using Affinity Designer Instead of Pixelmator: All right. So I go, I'm gonna go ahead and show you this step with my new design and working on for spoon flour for their bioluminescence Spin flower design challenge. And I do want this with a black background in the end at the very end. But I always like the ability toe have an adjustable background color, so I'm not going to make that part yet. I'm just going to do a transparent background, just like I do with the pixel mater version, and I need to add an extra layer above everything else. So I'm putting marks in these two corners, and this is in case you didn't watch in case he's skipped to this video. This is so when we save this as a PNG, it's going to save all the way to the edge of the campus. Normally, it's only going to save to the edge of the pixels that are on the screen, and we need the whole campus size perfectly, so you just need to put those on there, make sure you're not drawing over anything, Even if it's a new layer, you don't draw over any of your artwork and then save as a PNG. Let's go into campus and canvas information and just make sure you know your pixel dimensions. So this was a 12 inch campus, and at three hitter DP I that means my dimensions or 3600 by 30. 600. If you had a 10 inch canvas at 300 it would be 3000 by 3000. I'm gonna go into affinity designer. This app has very tiny icons. I'm hoping that you'll be able to see them in this video, and I'm gonna go pretty slow. So on this main page, you just need to tap the little plus side new documents. And here's our dimensions in DP I We need to set it to what we had in procreate. So 3600. Okay, 3600. Okay. D p I 300 and it Even though it's a square, it's a default into one of thes two orientation styles, and I'm tapping and transparent background. I'm really interested to see that this color profile is the same one that pixel mater uses , but this ends up not being the color profile that imports back in to procreate. It ends that being a little bit different, and we'll get to that later. So don't change any of those and tap OK. The other option was to add an art board or not, which we don't need. We just need her canvas so you should see little squares because it's got a transparent background and ah, lot going on over here. This question mark, if you tap your finger on it, it tells you what all of those things are. And Liz Color Brown has some great classes on this, and there's a couple more that I know that are coming out very soon on skill share. So if you want to get to know this app more, I'm in the middle of getting to know it right now as well. It's pretty full featured, so all right, so we need to bring in our image to do that. Tap on this little kind of paper picture icon with the three little dots on it and place image import from photos. We're gonna I just tap on recent. Here it is right here. It's loading the photo, and then it says drag to place your image, and that little pop up went away right away. But before you do that, make sure Magnetics is on right here. The little magnet tool symbol and we're gonna drag and drop that image, and it's gonna snap into place in this corner. And I'm just going to double check that. It's snapping and you can see green lines and red lines when it snapped all the way to the corners. We need to have Magnetics on this whole time. All right, Now I need four of this exact tile. So I'm going to the three little dots next to the one we just had. We just used intact copy. So might first of all, make sure your photo is selected. The little blue dots are on it. Temp copy. Now tap that again and tapped paste three times to three. So you can't see those until you come over here to this little layers icon. If you can't see that very well in this recording, it's just like picture of layers like this. Tap that and you can see 1234 You have four copies of that tile, and this is the step that we do in pixel mater to I'm trying to make that go away. There we go. So we need to drag these into the four corners. We're not changing the size of the image, so don't grab the little blue dots. Just grab. Oh, pixel meter doesn't let you grab the transparent background part, but it looks like affinity designer does, So you just need to grab and drag so you can see the red lines going this way. When you're in the right place and the green lines going this way and it does snap and it seems to be a little less touchy than pixel mater, it stays put. So that's that's what we do. That's the first step. So sliding four tiles into the four corners is step number one, and now we need to export. So tap on that paper symbol with the little three dots on it and have export P and G is selected. I didn't change anything over here. I didn't change anything over here, So we're just keeping this very basic and then I'm tapping share. So I've tested this out when I saved the image from here to my camera roll. It does save as a PNG unlike pixel mater pixel mater will save it as a J peg with a white background. Even if your file doesn't have a white white background, this one saves it as a PNG. But when I imported that PNG back into procreate, the color was not correct. So don't do that. Just go straight to share it to procreate, Okay? And then you can just cancel this If you want, you can keep this set up and just to delete these if you want to reuse it for another pattern later, you can, um, go into the layers and just tap on the little garbage can delete, delete, delete, delete. And then when you go out, you have this eye would title. It's if you tap on the little three lines here, you can rename and just name it something that will let you know what it is like 3600 repeat pattern or something like that. So you know the dimensions. I use 3000 and 3600 both. So this one right here is 3000 by 3000. So now I can just pop in. I don't have to set up a canvass every time you can just keep popping into that one. All right, let's go back into procreate and it should import and remember it always important, says the very 1st 1 in the gallery says this one right here, the background. Your scene is just the appropriate background. So go ahead and get rid of that slight right off or just erase it. Just make sure if you have some intricate little designs, that you're not erasing those on accident, and now you can copy that layer. Oh, also, let's look at become this information the color profile, it says CG image derived. That's not an option when you're creating a profile and procreate, so I'm not sure what this means, but it works. Let's check the color by pasting it into a new layer Here. I always de select before, ends up getting tapped and shifted, and I can see the color matches is just purse. Oh, yeah, so these match said this is great, Um, And then, to finish your design, you need to go ahead and remove the layer that has the little corners. You can delete it or just turn it off and then add the rest of your design to this center. I'm going to go ahead and turn the black background back on what I did with my originals going to turn everything off for a second. What I did with my originals was, um I just saved this whole thing is a P and G. So I turned the background layer off and I saved just this. So that's in my camera roll. And this is because I used a lot of layers creating these guys and I don't have enough layers available to duplicate these. So I just brought in a duplicate. I made it smaller. You can see the originals are a little bit bigger. I went ahead and went add insert photo and then brought in. He could bring any of them in. This is the one I did last night. So I brought in the PNG and then I selected them three fingers wiped down, cut and paste. So that's no on a new layer. Go back to this layer, select this guy. Three fingers wiped down, cut and paste. So now those air, All three on separate layers. And now if I turned back on my layer, I just brought in from affinity designer, then I can put another jellyfish somewhere. Let's see. Maybe I want to turn it and flip it. I go over this part more in the other videos of class, so that's a little crowded. This part is the part that really, uh is it takes a lot of fussing around and maybe that's just me. I'm just being too particular. I'm gonna check my pattern. I'm gonna go ahead and check it with the black background. All of the items that I placed in the center make sure none of them touched the edges. Just like when you're placing your original items. None of them can touch the edges of the original three. Before we brought it into pixel before we brought it into affinity designer. None of these touch the edges. This one's really close, but none of them touch the edges. Um, and that's really important. And then, just like that is important the the three that you're bringing in the three new ones that you're bringing in to fill the rest of your pattern. Those also can't touch the edges. So now we check her pattern, and I'm just gonna go ahead and do this with a black background. I'm just double checking it, so I'm gonna share it as a PNG save the image, go back into affinity designer, Go back into that file that we already created. Tap on the little paper with the three dots place image from camera roll or import photos. I think it said enough. Most recent one. Remember, it's not going to show up until you drag and drop Magnetics is already on because we turned it on before snap into place. Double check this end, snap into place. With that image selected, we're gonna tap on the three dots. Copy, then paste three times. Pieced, paste pieced. We already created are seamless. Repeat. Now we're just checking the pattern to see if we like the layout and to see if it is truly seamless. So we need to tap on who? Something's selected. I don't know what this menu iss Okay, So what just happened? There was I somehow selected the node tool. So if you don't see the little blue dots, make sure you're on that top arrow right here. Not that little arrow that goes back to the main menu. But this arrow, that's just a cursor regular cursor arrow, and then you can have your, uh, images selected. This time you are grabbing the little blue node and decreasing it to the center, and it'll snap right into place and you can see it says 1800 by 1800 which is exactly half the height in the wind. I took another one, tap another one and have the last one. So if you're happy with how that overall design looks than that can be your final project or just the one tile can be your final. Either one works in affinity. Designer you're gonna see there's the little lines and it looks like you might have a seam . But it is, I think, just how affinity designer does. The little, um, shows you the little image borders, so we can double check that by exporting so tapping this little paper export share. It's already on P and G bring it back in to procreate, going to procreate with import. And sure enough, there are no lines in there, so those little tiny lines are just the little borders of those pictures in affinity. Designer there Not in here now, This one. I did that process with the black background on. So now this is my image. This has a black background. It doesn't have a transparent background. So I can't really do anything to that background. So that's that's not how I normally do it. But I was just checking the pattern. I delete these if I don't need them. I really don't like holding onto extra procreate files. So I saved that one layer into this master document, and I just kind of keep it all in here. So if I decide I do want that two by two grid of this image that we just did I will go ahead and turn the background off and do that same process. I don't need that little layer that had the blue in the corners because I already have images that touched the edge is now. Okay, So, uh, last time I duplicated this before I shrunk it down, you can shrink it first, get it right to that middle point and then duplicate it. Tap the three dots, copy paste paced conceit over here paste, and then just drag him into the corners. You can do either way they snap into place. I'm quick about it because I've had a lot of experience, but you should be a little bit careful that your snapping it right into the right spot and not like a little bit off like that. And now I can export as a PNG. It takes a little time for the share option. It's kind of has to process so and important to procreate. So now I have my two by two, and I'm going to copy it. I sometimes do this. I like to keep this version as well as this version, but I like to keep it all together. So I liked a group and turn all of that off, keep it together. And then I'm gonna go ahead and peace to that version in, which means you can delete this. Now we have it all in one
