About This Class

Welcome to our third SOLIDWORKS Class covering our first set of basic features. This class is the first of our SOLIDWORKS Class Series which consists of 12 short classes ranging from 15 mins to 1.5 hrs. The series will take you from knowing nothing about SOLIDWORKS to the Certified Professional Level (CSWP).

In this specific class, you will learn the following:

1. Class Series Intro: welcome to our solid works class. My name is taste here and I will be leading you through this class. I myself have been an avid, solid works user for the last eight years. I have also been working in training and instructional design for the last five years. Combining those two experiences we designed and produced the best solid work course there is. This is, of course, as testified by the 4000 plus students we trained on using solid works. Today we're super excited to bring this training to you. This class is a part of our larger solid Works class series. This series consists off 12 short classes or sections to take you from knowing nothing about solid works to the 35 associate level C S W A. Siri's will then continue to take you from the certified associate level to the certain parts professional level CS WP Each of those classes has its own standalone learning objectives, which you can learn in the description. You can also download the contents outline for the whole class Siris in the download section. This is in case he would like to jump from one class to another. We will be using the learning by doing approached to conduct this class. So whenever we're learning something new will be directly using it to build something with it, be it a sketch apart. A drawing or an assembly way will walk you through a step by step to make sure you understand any new concept we introduce. We will also provide you with project work, reinforce the skills we learn together. So who should take this class series? Basically, anyone wanting to get started with solid works for wanting to advance his or her solid work skills toe an advanced level. Those could be engineers, designers, makers or hobbyist. So if you fall in those categories, this class Siri's has something for you. You don't need any prior knowledge to start the series. You just need to be ready to learn, so let's get started. 2. Intro to Basic Features 1: welcome to the basic feature section. This section. We will take our first steps, going from two D sketches into three D models. We will be able to do this through features. We will learn some basic features like extruded Boss through the cut fillets and champers. He will apply those features to create different models. We will learn how to apply multiple teachers in one model and also how to add it on leave applied features. In addition, we will address a critical point in design intent, which we like to call design priorities. So let's go ahead and start applying or first teachers. 3. The Download Section: in this video, we're going to tell you about the download section. So with every one of our classes, we have a download section which includes files for you to download. Those files will help you follow up in our lectures and help you gain hands on experience which we designed this course about. So here we are, in our first solid works class, class, war, interface and navigation. And if I go to the about section, you'll have information about the class, the learning objectives and down below them. You will have the down low section on this download section Link will basically take you to our Dropbox, where we have prepared or the downloads that goes along this class off I click on the link , open a new top and take us to our Dropbox. And here in the drop box, we have Class one interface and navigation, and they have two folders for I switched to the list display. I'm gonna have two folders as you've seen earlier. One cos lecture Fife on the other companies lecture seven on the one at the beginning. Indicates the class numbers 1.5 indicates that this is for a class number one, which is interface and navigation on a lecture number five, which is the command bar, canvas and design tree. And the easiest way to download those folders is to go to the top right corner and you'll see a download option. So if I click on that and then click on direct download, the browser will automatically download all those folders in a say file. And here they are. If I click on this, you will have to folders for lectures number five and seven, and each of those folders would have additional materials that supplement learning for that particular lecture. So that was all about download section. Now get yourself ready for the next video lecture where we would actually start presenting instructional materials. 4. Extruded boss, Cut Extrude, and Fillet : in this lecture, we will cover our first features extraordinaire bus cut, extrude and fill it. We will use those to create the following model. You can don't know this drawing from the download section before we start modeling. Let's explain what our boss extrude got extrude and fill it starting with extruded us. Basically, it's pushing out into the third dimension, adding materials so we can go from the two D sketch on the left to the three D model on the right, Cut extrude is the opposite off extrude bus. Here we are cutting into the third dimension by removing material will cut extrude. We can go from the to these catch on the left. To that hole you see on the right, fillets are basically rounding sharp edges, so using fillets, we can go from the mother on the left to the model on the right. So let's go back to our model for this lecture. We create models. It's always good to plan our steps. So for this model we can plan our steps as following. We can start with a plain box using extraordinary boss, then cut a hole by cut extrude and then apply a fill it. So let's go ahead and start creating the model. We will start with creating the first step, the box. So we're going to select the top lane for this so top plane sketch and then I'm going to sketch a square. So I'm gonna do a rectangle, and then I'm going to make this site equal this site using a relation, and then I'm going to set the side to be five inches. Now, we have just done the 1st 2 steps of creating a features. The first was to select a plane, and the second was to do a sketch. Now we go to the third step, which is to apply a feature. So we go to the feature stop here in the top, we click on it. Now we want to create a box. So we're going to use the extrude boss feature. So if we click on that, we're going to get a preview off what we're doing. So here we're getting a preview off the extrude here. This distance represent how much, often extraordinary want. We want this to be a box. So we're going to increase this to five inches and you note. As we increase this number, the extrude preview is getting bigger and bigger. So we're gonna set this to five and they were going to click. OK, so we just finished creating a box. Now we go to the second step, which is to create that hole in the middle. So we first select a plane. Now let's stop here for a second. Now, since we have a box, we have just created six additional planes to the three Original one. So now we have the three original planes, right plane, the top lane, the front plane and then every face off that box we just created represent another plane that we can always use for an additional sketch. So let's go ahead and see how that works. If I click on the top surface here, it's highlighted. And then I can go back to the sketch stop and then I can click on sketch. And now we are in the sketch mode on the surface and here in the design tree, you can see we have an active sketch. Now how come you change the view to face that surface? We can go to the design tree and then right, click on the sketch and then you see this sign here. Click on it and it will take you normal to that sketch. Now what we want to do is to draw another square with the side being three inches this time . So we're going to do the same thing, go to the rectangle and then draw a rectangle in the middle like escape. Go to smart dimension. Make that to be three click OK, And then we can make a relation between this side on this side. We're going to make them equal. And now we have a fully defined square. So now we have created our sketch. We move to the next step, which is to apply a feature. So we're going back to features. And this time we're going to use the opposite of extrude boss, which is extruded cut. So if you click on that, we're going to get the same thing a preview became right here, didn't fix. You can always click the mouse wheel and they move it to see the review again Here for distant you see, it's already set for five inches because we've used five inches before in the extrude. We can decrease that when you're going to see how the preview is affected. Here in the drop down menu, you'll see some options. Currently, it's set to blind, which means we are setting how much of a cut we want. If we dropped that menu down, you're going to see different options of how you want the cut. Now we want the cut to go through the whole cube. So here there is an option that says through all, if we click on it, it will automatically cut through all of the box. So that's what we want. We're going to click. Okay? And now we have a box with a hole in the middle. No, we're going to the last bit, which is to create the fill it. So in the command bar, we're going to click, fill it, and then we're gonna get some options on the left. Currently our starters, we are only going to concern ourselves with two fields the field that says item to fill it and then the fill it parameters. So let's start with the item to fill it here, you can select the edges where you want the fill it to be according to the drawing we have , we want the fill it to be over all the edges on the top and in the bottom so we can go to this edge here and click on it and then go to the second a cheer. Click on it, got 1/3 edge, click on it the fourth edge and select or the edges we want. So now we have all the edges on the top selected, and when you do that, you will be able to see a preview. We also want to apply fits on the other side. So we're going to take a look on the wheel on the mouse and then rotate the model. And now we are exposed to the bottom part and we can do the same thing. There is a shortcut here that we can use since, or the fillets apply on the edges around this surface. We can select the surface, and solid works will automatically select all the edges around it. So if I click on the surface, you will see that the fin it is being applied to all the edges around the surface. So that's a shortcut that we can use. And now we're going down to the Philip Parameter. According to the drawing, the fill it has a radius off 0.25 inches and we can import that here. So if we increase this, you'll be able to see that the fill it is getting bigger, we decrease it. You notice the fill, it is getting smaller. We want that to be 0.25 inches. So we're gonna type in 0.25 and then we're set. We're going to the top and click. OK, and now we have the Philip created. And that's the mother we wanted. While you're here, take some time to play around with those features we just explored. If you have any questions, post them in the discussion boards. 5. Editing and Deleting features : In this lecture, we will learn how to edit and delete features. So let's take this model and start editing the features here in the design tree. You're going to see the three active features that were used to build up this model. Let's say we want to edit the Boss extreme feature, so I'm going to go to the bus extort feature in the design tree, right click and go to the top. There is a button that says Edit feature. Click on it and then we're going to get this window right here. Here is the distance, which we determined before as five inches. I can edit that distant to be whatever value I want, so I'm going to increase it to seven inches and you see, as we increase the distance, the preview off the extraordinary increases as well. So I have it. A seven inches go to click, OK, and that's it. We have just edited the boss extrude Feature. Five inches, 27 inches. Let's go ahead and try editing another feature. Let's say I'm going to other the fill it feature again. I can go to the fill it in the design tree right click, Goto added. Teacher, click on it And again I'm gonna get this window. Say I want to do the followings first I want to change the radius off the fill it too 0.4 inches, some going here and change that 2.4 inches. And now you see the preview of the fill it increased. Another thing I want to change is the face off the fellas. Now I have the fill it in the top place and in the bottom face. Let's say I want to delete the bottle face so I can click face to and you can see if I click on it. It highlights the barter face I can right click and choose elite. And now we have edited the fit 2.4 inches. Onda. We have removed the bottom face from the fill it. I'm going to click. OK, Onda, we have done editing. Let's say I want at it a sketch that we used to create a feature. So I'm going to go to the boss extort feature and I'm going to expand it. And then here you're going to see sketch one. This is the sketch we used to create the boss extrude feature. You click on it, you're going to see it's that box we created so I can write Chemical in the sketch and then I can go to edit, sketch and say, I want to change this distance from five inches 27 inches. I can double click on the five on in the box. I can change it to seven when I can click. OK, now you see the sketch have changed. I can click a exit sketch notice that because we change the sketch, the feature built up on that change. Now let's move toward the leading features say I want to delete They cut Extraordinary teacher. I can simply go to the future on the design tree, right click on, then choose delete. So if I delete this, I'm going to get a conformation message on. Then I can say yes. And now we have deleted the feature notice that we only deleted the feature. The sketch, which we used to create the feature. It's just so there. When you create multiple features and sketches, each feature and sketch is based on what's before it. So what happens if we delete a base feature Let's go ahead and try doing that. So I'm going to boss extrude feature, which is a base feature I'm going to right click. And the leads we do get the same window. However, notice this here solid work is telling you that you're going to delete this bus extrude feature and also all the dependent items which are the second sketch which we used for the cot extra feature. If I choose Yes, notice in the design tree, we deleted almost everything with the exception off the first sketch. 6. Chamfers: In this lecture, we will learn what are champers and how we apply them. Champers air basically a way to remove sharp edges using an angle slope. Those images show what is a chance for We are going to use this model to show how we create champers. So in the edges here we have fillets or whatever reason, we don't want fillets anymore. Instead, we want champers. So first we're going to the lead to a spirit. Go to the design tree, right click fillets and then choose elite. Yes, on we deleted diffidence, So let's apply champers in the command bar. Under fill it, you see a drop down menu. If you click on it, you're going to see Chan for so let's click on that on the left. You see the chance for parameters. Let's go ahead and explain the three main parts in this parameters. The first box is where you can select the edges or faces that you want to apply the chance for two. So if we said like the sparks and then click on this edge, you see we are going to apply the champ for here. So let's delete this edge below the box. We see three options angle distant, distant distance and Vertex lose represent the methods off how we can measure the chance for Finally, you see fields for numbers on this is where we measure the jumper. So let's go ahead and start looking at the three methods of creating champers. First method is angle distant. If we select this option, we are allowed to determine a distant on an angle which represent the measurements off the chancellor. So let's try it out. So I'm going to select this edge here. Then I'm going to increase the distant just so you can see the effect. Now I'm going to change. The angle is well, just so you see how this affects the champ for notice that the angle is getting smaller. If I click OK, we see the chance for we generated. Let's look at the other two methods, so I'm going back to the design tree, right click on the champ for on Choose Edit feature. Let me delete this ad. For now, let's try out the distant, distant methods. If I click on distant distant, you're noticed that the measurement changed into two distances, which we can use to specify the chance for. So let's go ahead and select this other edge here. And then I'm going to change those dimensions. And you see, if you change the dimension, the champ for angle changes as well. And in this case here, the first distant represent the distance from the edge to the bottom off the champ for on then the second distant represent the distant from the edge, right to the other end of the chance for so if I am satisfied with this, I can click. OK, you see the Jumper. Let's try out the last method. I'm going back to edit feature and then I'm going to delete this judge and we're going to look at the third method. The third method is a vertex. You use this method if you want to create the champ for on the Vertex off a shape, and you notice we actually have three measurement this time. So let's go ahead and click on this Partick. Now you can see the three measurement distant one distant to distant three. Let's go ahead and change distance one. I'm increasing it right now, and you are able to notice that the chance for is being increased from one distant Only if I increase the other distant, you notice again the chance for increases from one other distance. Let's say I'm satisfied with this measurement right here. I can click, OK, and we have a Vertex jumper. The chancellor we want has a distance off 0.25 inches on an angle of 45 degrees. So let's go ahead and apply that go to edit feature. I woke to the lead. The spur ticks that I'm going to select angle distance because those are the two measurements we have in the distance. I'm going to input 0.25 on, then on the degree I'm going to import 45. We want this chance for to be applied on both the top and bottom surfaces to replace the Philips we deleted earlier. So in this election, I'm going to click on the top surface. I'm going to flip the model, and I'm going to click on the bottom surface as well. Now we have the two surfaces selected. Notice the preview. That's what we want. I can click OK, and we have replaced the champers and we don't replacing fillets with champers 7. A point in Design Intent - Design Priorities: In this lecture, we will address a point in design intent, something we would call design priorities to explain what we mean. We are going to do an example and see how that could affect our models or designs. We are going to model this shape in two different ways. Then we're going to change one measurement and see how that change is being interpreted in a different way between the two models. So let's go ahead and start creating the model. So I'm going to the top plane, go to sketch, and then I will draw a square, gonna have the site equal this other side on. I will have it to be you six inches. And then I will apply an extraordinary boss feature for one inch and I have my base square , and then I'm going to make the hole in the center. So I'm going to sketch to circle and I'm going to draw a circle, and I will dimension the diameter to be one inch. Now, what we are going to do differently between the two models is how we define the circle. So please pay attention to this. We're going to do our first approach of defining it. We want the circle to be at the center off this square. Since the square has a side off six inches, we can make this to the center by dimension ing the center of it to the side with a dimension off three inches. So let's go ahead and do that. So I'm going to go smart dimension, click on the center, click on this side and then have that as three inches. And then I'm going to collect of the center again and then click at the bottom side. And then how that's said to be three inches as well. Now we have fully defined our circle to be at the center of the square, so I'm going to features on I'm going to do My Cut Through all. Okay, now we have a hole in the middle of the square. Let's say afterward you decided that the base square should be 10 inches instead of sex, so you're going to change it so you're going to the design tree under boss extruded. Then click on the sketch, double click on the six inches and then change it into 10. Click OK, if you do a change and you do not see that change reflected here. You're going to notice there is a traffic light signal in the design tree. If you see that you should go to the top and click on the Rebuild Command and that will rebuild the model with the changes. So go to rebuild and now you see the changes. So that's the first approach. Now let's start our second approach. So I'm going to start a new part going to minimize this. Start a new part, go to the top lane, sketch the square and how this equal this. And then I'm going to dimension it to be six inches. Go to features, boss extruded to one inch and then click. OK, we have our base going to sketch in the surface. I'm going to do the circle now again, Take note here because we are going to define the circle in a different way. So the day ometer is one inch again and now, instead of defining it with dimensions, we're going to define it with pure relations. So I'm going to draw a line, gonna have that line for construction, and I'm going to draw it between the two corners. So I'm gonna have this. And if the line coincident with this corner on the other end of the line is coincident with the other corner and then I'm going to click on the center of the square control and click on this construction line and I'm gonna have that to be midpoint again. We have fully defined the circle to be at the centre off the square. However, we did not use dimension. We used relations. So let's go ahead and extrude the whole. So I'm going to extrude cut through all then. Okay, so we have our model GM. Let's go through the same situation. All of a sudden, you have realized you want the side of the square to be 10 inches instead of sex. So again you're going to change it. So you're going to the drop down menu in boss extraordinary click on sketch and then double click on the six on, then change it into 10th click OK, and then rebuild the model. Now we have this notice. If we compared the to end result off the two approaches for the first approach, the whole state as three inches apart from their left on bottom side, while at the second approach, the whole remained at the center. Just a comment on this. None of the two approaches is right or wrong. It depend about your priority was my priority to have the whole three inches apart from the left and bottom side. If that's the case, then we would follow the first approach or was my priority to have the hole at the center of the square. If that was the case, then we would follow the second approach, so it all depends on the situation. 8. Group Exercise : in this lecture, we will practice what we have learned so far. By doing the following model, you can get the drawing from the download section. We recommend that you stop here for sometimes to understand the drawing. Okay, let's start with planning the creation off this model. After looking at the drawing for some time, I came up with a plan that looks like this. Be advised that this is not the only possible plan. Probably there are tens and tens of other ways to do the same model. However, for now I will stake with the shown plan. So let's go ahead and start creating the model. So I'm going to select the top lane for sketch, and then I'm going to start by creating the Arctic on the left of the model. So I'm going to select the argument, and then I'm going to start from the origin, go to the top, do one click and then moves on to another click. So now we have the far left of the model, and then I'm going to get to new that with the rectangle. So I'm going to select the line command for a year and now we have the general shape we want. So now we're going to dimension it. So I'm going to smart dimension. Click here and then the radius is about one point 25 or 1/4. And then the distant here is about six minus the radius, which is 1.25 Like Okay, on we have the general shape. However, this is not fully defined yet, so let's check out what is messing won't exit smart dimension. I'm gonna hold this here. I'm going to move it. Okay, so now I see that we need to restrain this line here. So let's go ahead and do that. I'm going to Smart dimension, like here on this dimension is twice the radius. So it's about 2.5, and now you notice that sketches fully defined. So now we're going to features or to feature what's extraordinary on the thickness. Here is about half an inch on going to type in 0.5. Not that we follow the basic three steps to create a model. We first selected a plane. Then we drew a sketch and then we applied a feature. Now we will go toward our second stage here we're going to apply a chance for So I'm going to the top and then go to the drop down menu and select Jumper. Looking closely at the drawing, I'm going to create a chance for using distant, distant method. So I'm going to click on this and distant on, then in the chance for parameter I'm going to select this edge and now I have a preview. I can zoom in just to see things clearer. And then in the distances notice from the drumming. One distant is quarter often inch. This is the distant to the bottom, which is the 1st 1 So I'm gonna have going to five here now. The other distant, which goes inward, is actually the difference between the two radius is we have. So I can go to the second distant and type in 1.25 which is the first radios minus 3/4, which is the second radius. Now, if I press enter, you're going to see it automatically calculates that to be half a niche click. OK, now we have completed our second stage off constructing this model. Now we were going towards our third stage, and by this. We're going to create another chance for to the right of the model. So again, go to the champ for and then choose this and distant. But then I'm going to select this edge here, distant to the bottom, which is the first Distant is about 3/8 inches. I'm gonna type in 3/8, and then the distance inward is 1.25 inches. Yes, do that as well. And now I have the preview. That's what I want going to click. OK, now we start the last stage, which is to create the four holes. So I'm going to select this side here, go to sketch and start a new sketch. Right click on the sketch. Click normal, too. Now I'm going to start drawing lose for circles. So I'm going to the one circle first. Here's one circle. This circle is in a horizontal line with the origin, so I'm going to apply this relation here. So I'm going to click on the center of the Circle Control, click on the origin, have that horizontal, and then I'm going to start creating my dimensions. So the distant from the center of the circle to this. And here is 1.25 inches. So I'm gonna type in 1.25 But the ometer off the circle is 5/8. So I'm going to click on the parameter of the circle, Look again and type in 5/8 click. OK, and now we have a fully defined circle. Notice that the same circle is being repeated three more times so I can use the linear sketch patterns. I'm going to click on the leaners catch pattern under entities to pattern. I'm going to select the circle we want for Total. And now I'm going to increase the distance again. Don't concern yourself too much with that because this distant does not define your other circles. So I'm going to stop here, will click. OK, now we have to define at least one circle for the other circles to be defined as well. So I want this to be in a horizontal line with this, so I'm gonna have them horizontal. The distance between the two centers is one inch. So I'm going to click on this center and then click on this other center. Look again on type in one Now you notice our sketch is fully defined, says fully defined at the bottom. It's all black, so we're done with it. Now that we have created the sketch, we're going to apply a feature, and this time we want to cut those holes through the whole model, some going to features and select the extrude cut feature. Click on that on then under options going to select through all because we want the holes to be through the whole model. You can move the model just to check the preview. It's going through all so I'm going to click OK on. We have just completed creating the model. Keep in mind that there is no one way to create a model. You can create the same model in many different ways by doing sketches and features in different order, and that's totally fine 9. Student Projects: Now we are at the end of the class. It's time for us to do some project work. Check out the project work we prepared for you in the download section. They will help you reinforce the skills we learn together in this class.
