In this class you will learn how to create a dome using some simple and straight forward steps with Rhino 3D . Rhino is a bit intimidating at first, but with some experience it can become one of the most useful tools. These tutorials are great for students who are trying to expand their design arsenal.  They will allow you to create some impressive geometries in a quick amount of time.  The tools here are just the start of what is possible to create with Rhino.  The steps in this tutorial are useful for any other applications. So make sure to follow me for future lessons, and let me know if you have any questions, or ideas for future tutorials.

1. 01-INTRO: I have one. This is Nico Graphic studio and this video I'm going over. All the steps were creating some interesting domes, Dorn just going over some steps that were pretty straight board and easy for anyone to kind of follow along to create something like that. We're gonna be starting at the base dome, subdividing it, creating the base geometry, then creating a segment long and from there were able to take that second create so many different variations of that film. Just using that base geometry. So make sure follow along and let me know if you had any question. Story is for other videos. 2. 02-BASE GEOMETRY: to start, we're gonna need to first look at the units that we we know what we're working with. I'm gonna be used seeing inches here. Factional, even inches. And now I'm going to start here in the new layer. Go zero comma, zero comma zero that what? We start in the center and then we can create the let's see, it's gonna asks for a radius. So let's go. 20 foot radius. Don't, because that's what we're gonna be creating. So this is gonna be our based geometry. And now we can come in on a different layer and go here too. A spear. Go to the center point of that and then also Ah, quick quadrant. But make sure un select perpendicular and centered. And that way you can snap to that to that quadrant. The circle. Now we can use that circle can go ahead and trim the bottom part. And this has been the fastest way that have been able to create kind of the dome shape. And so what we want to do from here is subdivide this shape and then create blocks to rotate around to create a complex geometry 3. 03-DIVISION POINTS: So as you can see, we have the layers here. This is the base geometry that's gonna be base dome. And for the next one, we're gonna be used. We're gonna be creating the points of division. So points one for this part. We're gonna divide this curve into eight. Let's see you Well, do. Yeah, the default of 66 times. So we have a point, uh, dividing at six times this art. And what we can do next is good only layer typing planes and then create a plane at the ground level that encompasses the whole dome. And then we can select that and then copy vertical that we were only copying up and down. And we can be select everything here except for the points. Make sure you don't have project here. That way you can kind of snap to those points. Also, un select smart track that when you select when you get to those points, it will copy vertically to those. Then we can select that do control G two groups and now we have the subdivisions and the dome intersected. If we go to shaded view, what we want to do next and it's not create the three D geometry that's gonna be this one. And to be able to get the lines in the curbs that go all the way in that intersect this dome, we're gonna have to Duke men called Interstate to Sex. This is gonna be the first set, which is this group set, and then this set. And then once you hit enter, you should have your new don't geometry here, that alliance with these points so we can actually go ahead and hide. Um, the points that we created that we we only have, um, the base geometry here. And so these points actually were created in a different layer. So I'm gonna go ahead and put him into this layer, and now we have the base to be able to create the dome geometry. 4. 04-3D POINTS: So the next step is actually to subdivide these curves. And since we divided the top art by six, if we multiply that by four, is this actually 1/4? That would be 24. So that would be an even number that would kind of match the vertical divisions. And so that's what I'm gonna be doing is hiding this and then going here to a new layer where I can select all of these typing divide and then have them to be divided by approximately 20 and that will give us a good density relative to the amount of divisions that we did vertical. We're also missing the point at the top, so I can always bring back the dome geometry and go here, Teoh, create a point and then put one. Put one at the exact top. We can also go ahead and hide all of this stuff. And then now we have this. Okay, so now that we have the points here, let's make sure we organize it and label these points, um, to cause birdie outpoints one so we can organize this year and see that we have all of these sets of points that if we go to decided to be and go zoom all extents, we can see that we have. If we picked these alternating ones, we can We can rotate those. That way we can create a more triangulated design and so we'll have to actually group those together. And if we actually create a line from here to here, we want to rotate this point from here to the center point there. So we will actually go to top you. You go ahead and rotate. And this time project So we'll go from here to there to the midpoint. Let's hear it again. So take will go from here to their to the midpoint. That way we can create the hexagonal point weird for the dome. And now now it's a matter of kind of taking these lines and putting them together. And now we can create that dome geometry and it's fairly straightforward. The steps air pretty simple, but you're able to take this and kind of do it for so many other designs that, um, these steps should should help you with those things. So, um, let's go ahead and develop this 5. 05-DOME-SEGMENTS: So, as you can see, I always try to save the work that I've been doing by keeping it in different layers. And so we'll continue that by creating the this. This will be the trying you triangles. So, triangles I was going to say triangle planes. But for now, we'll just call him triangles and we'll use a bright color. So it's kind of so we know exactly what we're working on and will actually just select points and make sure that everything else is un selected. That way we can kind of work our way around in this exact way on, so I'll select. I'll click 1.2 point three point and then see too close, and I'll actually do that all the way around. 2123 Then close 123 close, and I'll actually be during that all the way around zigzagging my way up the dome. That way I cannot create the base geometry for the whole dome, and this is what will be, uh, using as a block. Teoh kind of rotate around and creates a pretty cool, cool results. So there we go. We have the base geometry. And so this triangles? Well, actually, we can create a block now, and so that way we can select those curves, put a massive block and then here will label this section one cause we probably want to do more than one section. And so for now we can take these and we can do many different things. We can, um, for now rotated to give yourself an idea of what it's gonna look like completed so we can rotate, go to the top, being and then go to copy. Yes, and start there and you're gonna work your way around, and by the end, you should have the block rotated and all of them should land exactly on the points. That way, we have a perfectly enclosed shape and so we can go to Chez. Did you hear? And as you can see, that is our don't geometry. It looks pretty nice, but there's many other things that we can do to it. So now we can change the color back to something more neutral and we can go ahead and kind of work and develop this further. The next one of the things you could do is come here and type in strangle planes. That way we can create the actual solid dome and that's put that on a red. They're select all of this and you can go in here, select all of those incitement plane our service. What you'll see is that it will actually create a plane at each one of those triangles because triangles will always result in a plane. And so that IHS what we have here, we can actually change it to that color. And once he hit, okay, you'll see that it actually generated the entire dome just from that one block. So that is why, uh, the command long is so powerful. It's because you're able to alter many things at once and create pretty complex geometries . So if I go here, I made a copy on the right hand side and it got explode Block. It exploded all of those blocks. Now we can join, and now we can see that this is actually a perfectly enclosed solid watertight. Don't that we can actually type in cat, and it'll actually enclose it. And you could also do in a command called Shell, and we can remove the bottom part and say the thickness. We wanted to be three inches and then I'll give it a second part to give you a result, and it should give you a dome that is, has a solid thickness on the outside. But for this time it didn't give us a solid result. But it did give us, you know, some thickness if that is what you're looking for. So let's go back here and it's actually continued working on this dome. That's actually give this another neutral color. That way we can kind of just work on some other stuff to make it look more complex. 6. 06-DOME DETAIL1: Okay, so here we are. We have these triangle planes. I'm actually going to change into a different color, and I'm gonna create a new layer. And this was gonna be called pipes. And that way I can go in here, and I'm actually gonna just take a copy of this and put it to the side, because I might want to explode this and that. Create another block later, down the road and you'll see what I mean. For now, let's work in here and see we have all of these curves, right? Well, the way to do it. So you don't select also the surfaces which we don't want to select right now is you on select here Under filter, you can select services. In that way, all you select are the Kurds, and so we can explode. Now we can explode on explode, just regular explode that we have because we know we have two curves on this side, and so we can select, duplicate and get rid of those extra lines and then select those in tightening pipe diameter will say the radius will say two inches. And there we have, um, basically the pipes created Now, if you aren't careful, it'll create on flat and it won't create a nice connection. So let's go ahead and do that again. Let's take a pipe, go back here, select those and diameter actually selected first have been typing pipe, then instead of flat, put it to round and two inches words that we creates a kind of clean connection there at the end. And then if you hit okay, it'll give you the result. But sometimes it kind of gives you a funky result. But if you go in and you get out, it'll actually to do it again. So there we have the base geometry for a dome with just pipes, and that's, ah, that could vehicle result, if that's what you're looking for. But there's other things that we can go further and do and, um, to create a more interesting, complex dome 7. 07-DOME DETAIL2: on the next step, I'll be creating some preparations. So, um, create earlier called panels here and give it more of a glass color of blue color and we can come in here and go inside of any one of those blocks, and I'm gonna start extremely the circus. And if you forgot to select this again, put it again and then you'll see that it'll working again, and every time you extreme to service its gonna extreme perpendicular to that plane. But if you select more than one, it'll actually start just going in one direction. So make sure you only extreme extreme one at a time. So let's say I'm gonna create a one inch panel and I'm gonna more work my Billy around by just hitting space bar space Mark in doing the same thing for problem. Unless you can see some of these actually came out and said, Mobile came in. So I'm going to have to read you these bottom ones and have them extreme out. And so you just have to be careful if you're doing that by hand. So extreme Serpents minus one minus one minus one, minus one. Minus Warren and then here minus certainly this minus one. And then these air plus one. And so we were able to know D select us. And have that, um, have those panels be created, and now we're gonna have to actually create the circle preparations on the inside to give it more of that cool, um, kind of, you know, futuristic down. So now we have those panels and weaken bring back the red panels and kind of hide the blue ones and then go in here. And we can, um, take this these geometries, and we're gonna offset amid to create a small kind of like a small frame for the window. So we're going to duplicate the face all of those planes that I'm actually here, and we're gonna do that buying, creating a new layer and doing duplicate face border. Well, actually, select all of those. And there we have a polly line at the perimeter of every single one of those triangles. So weaken, select all of this and we could offset. Try to offset this curb and will do, um, three inches and we'll do that all the way around. That way we can extreme those and create some some cool frames for the for the dome. And what's cool is that we only need to do it to one segment, and it will update it for all of them. So let's, uh, go ahead and hide that bring back toe. You can also also hide the geometry of the dome, and we can start extruding some of these and a new layer. Of course. That way we can always keep our kind of things organized, and we can extrude curb, and it'll extrude in the same direction as sits perpendicular to kind of the plane that it creates that will actually go in both directions. And we'll do the same thing all the way around by doing space bar twice. You actually do the same, commander that you did the time before and so we can hide those. We actually forgot to do one. So that's extreme. Thanks. And then here we have these triangles that will be clipping are geometry, and that's what we want. So we can group that together, bring back these panels, and we see that all of these panels weaken, select them. We can group them together, and so it makes it easier for us to work with. Now, what I'm actually thinking is that he strangles will actually become the glass, and this outer frame is gonna become Yeah, like I said, more of a frame. So to do that to make sure that we don't lose any other work that's actually select the thick wall here. And let's group it together. We have now that we have a group we can copy, So we have it copied together, and then we can actually do it bullion intersection. So let's do a 1,000,000,000 intersection between that and all of these and there we have those glass panels that we wanted, but we can bring back that frame we had because we copied it. And now we can actually do a bullion difference of the inner ones. And now we have outer frame inter cream that we can actually, um, work with. So let's type in brain here, change optic layer. And then that was gonna be called glass or panels. And that works perfectly. We can take every weaken, take polly services and services and select all of the curves um, that we had created before, that we don't need by the selecting services and police services and leaving the curves selected. And there we have the the structure of the pipes. We have the frame and we have the glass, and so we can actually just hit okay and bring everything back to kind of take a look at where we are. You can see that we have created that dome with the frames and with the inter portion just by updating and creating one section. And so what I will do now is actually going to the time lapse and show you exactly how you can render this and make a look really clean. 8. 08-DOME OPTIONS: actually, before I go into time Lapse A So you can see we still have some of the things he in here. And I'm actually I actually wanted to show you another way that you can actually take the soul geometry and, um, do a little bit more with it is you can actually take every single one of these. You can upset them where basically, you can extrude set up in both directions. You could do a solid so you could go out three minus three minus three and then do the same thing all the way around. But as you can see at this at this point, we're actually gonna want to do three when? Because it starts extracting in the other direction. And now that we have all of this, we can select it. We can be hot, the surface is selected. We couldn't do not the curves, and we can offset this surface. So let's actually do one by one in that screed, a six inch brain. And so when you do offset, it's gonna give you the directions Gonna go. You type in f to flip, and you, um, flip it in the other direction And there we have this other dome that is created in the same way. And the recent White took it out of the block because we actually want this to be a new brand new block. We're gonna put it at the end, points here, and we're going to call this segment to this called Section two. And so you can actually go up here to this portion by using project, selecting the on point and selecting copy. Yes, you can go here to there and just go all the way around being careful that you have all of the you know, that you're picking the right point. Sometimes it's kind of tricky, so you may have to go a little slow on this one, but at the end, you you should save a lot of time instead of having to do it all on your own and happen to do every single step, Um, which can get pretty tricky. So let's see if it's actually creating it the way we want it and it iss it's, um we can actually select all of this and wrote a Let's see if I can now do more than one second ahead of time go from the point. And sometimes it's even a tiny bit of time. We can actually just go around and select more than one. And here we have that other dome that we could using the scene, Uh, basically the same geometry, but just kind of created in a in a different way. And so we have these two. This is more of an over wire open wire. Bring one. And this is more been enclosed kind of glass glass. Look, So hopefully found this interesting and enjoyed it.
