About This Class

In this course we look at how to create retiming effects using the native controls in Final Cut Pro X. This includes slow motion, speeding up motion, creating freeze frames as well as some helpful tips on how to make these effects shine. 

Some basic knowledge of Final Cut Pro is recommended for this course. General knowledge of where everything is in the FCPX Interface as well as how to add, blade, and select clips will be helpful in creating the desired retiming effects you want to achieve.

1. Course Trailer: Hello. I'm patient. I'll melody in this course. I'm going to teach you everything you need to know to create speed effects in your movies, music videos and documentaries. This is a quick introductory course for anyone wants. Add to their editing bag of tricks. I'll see you in class. 2. Before We Start: your version of final cut Pro X may be different than mine. I'm working with version 10.4 point five, and you can check to see which version you're on by going to find a cup pro pop final, cut pro and checking the version there. 3. Downloading Project Files To Follow Along: If you'd like to follow along with me, you can download the same clips I'll be using in class at videos that pixels dot com for free. The links for the videos I used are found in my class description. Of course, you don't have to use these videos. Pixel videos has tons of different clips. You can experiment with free. So by all means select something that seems visually interesting to you, or you can even take a video you shot on your phone. The key thing to remember is to get the most out of re timing effects. We want a clip that has a subject that is in movement, so we wanted to have some kind of dynamic motion to get the most out of the effect. 4. Slow Motion: to create any of our speed effects will want to look at the re time drop down menu icon locate on the right side of the interface near the viewer. The icon looks very appropriately like a clock eso. Let's start what we need to do to create a slow motion speed effect on a clip. So the first and most important step is to have the right clip selected. So, using our select tool, click directly on the clip we want and then go to our re time editor and select slow, and we immediately get three preset options. We can play the clip at 50% 25% or 10% of the normal default speed. Let's go ahead and select 50% from our options. Now you'll notice a couple things have happened. The first thing is, we now have an orange bar running on the top of the clip of applied a speed effect on. We'll come back to this orange visual indicator in a future lessen. The second thing you probably noticed is that the clip is now longer, so if I was him out by hitting command minus the end point, which is the beginning from the clip in the out point, which is the ending frame of the clip, has not changed. But the clip has made longer because we slowed it down. When we artificially create a post production slow motion effect. Final cut has to create pauses. Now they're fraction of a second pauses. But final cut does create slight pauses in between all the frames, so that the video appears if it's slowing down. So it's important to note that this is not true. Slow motion. This is a post production, artificial slow motion effect. 5. Artificial vs True Slow Motion: it's important to note that using the re time editor to create slow motion speed effects is different than shooting at a high frame rate such a 60 frames per second, or 120 frames per second. Fatah Kapros, re time editor cannot create true slow motion the way many would probably imagine it, like if somebody was slapping somebody in the face and wanted to capture that s M o R. If you want to see a bullet go through, uh, aquarium, true slow motion is shot at a higher frame rate that is then slowed down to get the best speed. If IQ results shooting at a higher frame rate will probably be your best bet to getting the look you need. Luckily, more more affordable cameras today, including probably your phone camera shoot at high frame rates like 48 frames per second or 60 FPs or even 120 FPs. There even naps out there that can even go as far as 1000 FPs. However, there is usually a trade off with non professional cameras and that the resolution is usually lower at higher frame rates and you often get more digital noise in your video. That said, If you know you're going to be shooting a slow motion speed effect, I'd recommend having at least one camera. She did a high frame rate. 6. Faking True Slow Motion with Optical Flow: So, as I said earlier, the artificial slow motion effects don't really equal the high frame rates that you would get with a high speed camera. That said, Final Cut Pro does have a way to create a fake trousseau emotion effect, and that is with the magic of optical flow. Now here I have two clips on the timeline that are both so down to 25%. One has optical flow and one does not. So let's go ahead and watch both of these in full screen, as you can see a little bit choppy and here about to see the actual optical flow Look at that much smoother in motion. Now you do get some funky stuff going around. As a final cut pro tries to figure out how to blend these frames together. In any case, it does give some really nice options and can work really well in certain situations. The only downside to this is rendered time. Whatever you do raised a video quality of your slow motion to optical flow, it does take a little bit more time, but it's very simple to do. All we do is click on a new slow motion clip. This one does not have optical flow already applied to it, and we go to every time editor and we scroll down to where it says video quality and select optical flow. 7. Fast Motion: to create a fast motion speed effect. We once again selector clip with air. It'll go to our re time editor Drop down menu. And as we can see this time, we have four preset options. We can choose between speed are clipped by two times four times eight times or 20 times. So let's go ahead and select 20 times and boom! The clip sped up. We watch it. Who? That's very fast. Monica actually takes out frames when speeding up clips to make the clip appear sped up. 8. Custom Speed Effects: Let's say I want to create a speed effect that's slower than 50% but not as slow as 20%. That's when we can use a custom effect. So once again, using every tool, make sure the clip is selected and go to our re time editor, drop down menu and select custom. You'll notice right away that a bunch of options showed up, and I'm just gonna focus on the set speed settings so we can customize our speed by either the rate or the duration. So let's say I know for a fact that I want this to be about five seconds long. Go ahead and type in five seconds. So what it's gonna do is it's going to use the same in point and outpoint. So if I enter and speed it up to be able to fit it to just five seconds long and notice that it sped it up by 814% this is a really nifty thing to do, especially when you know exactly the timing of your clips. We can also customize our speed by just 2% So let's say I know it's gonna be at something odd like I wanted to be slowed down by 57%. And there we go. Now we haven't slowed down by 57%. 9. Freeze frames: There are two ways that you can make freeze frames and final cut pro, and I'll show you how to do both here. We actually have a clip that's shot at a high frame rate. And as you can see, it looks very different than the final cut pro slow motion effect. So I'm gonna go ahead and freeze frame right as he collapse right there. Now, the first method is actually using the re time editor again. So if I go over to my clip, I was selected and go to my re time editor and select hold. It's gonna go ahead and do something really interesting here. Notice that this says normal over here. And we had this little red bar and it 0% and then goes back to 100%. So this is where the freeze frame happened. So let's play. And by default it holds for about two seconds. Now we can make this longer by clicking on custom a little drop down menu and changing the duration 24 seconds, for example. And once again, it holds for that four seconds. Now we can also graphically change the duration of our hold frame by going over to the end and squeezing it to the left to make shorter or stretching it out to the right to make it longer. The benefit of using the re time editor and the hold to create a freeze frame is that it keeps the clip intact, and you can graphically see that it's a freeze frame. Very simply, however, there is another way to create a freeze frame, and it's quite simple, a swell. So I'm gonna go ahead and undo all this. The second way to make a freeze frame is making sure the first with the play head, where you want the freeze frame to start and going over to edit add freeze frame. Now, The difference between doing this and the whole frame is that, as you can see, we actually have split our clip into two and put in a freeze frame. Actually, in the middle. There are benefits to doing it like this instead of the hold frame, and I'll go over that in my HINTS section. But that's more or less how you do free screams 10. Tips and Tricks with Freeze Frames: So I have a couple of cool things that you can try with your footage when using an ad freeze frame. And this is something that you can do with the freeze frame option. But it's not something you can do with the hold frame option in the re time editor. The first thing I'd like to do is apply. Transition actually crosses all works really nicely. So I'm gonna go ahead and apply a transition right at the point that I've created the freeze frame and watch what happens Kind of a neat little thing. So I have a freeze frame over here and normal footage, and this is, of course, shot at a high frame rate. This is actually not slow mode. This is a shot at a high frame rate that's playing in a normal frame speed that looks pretty neat. The other thing that you can try is what's going to take that out is a very simple thing. So if we go over to our inspector and we highlight our freeze frame and select on our transform the scale and would bring the scale up just a smidge, maybe 1 20 let's play that does he have that looks, it gives it a little bit of pop, and you can see how that could have some value if you're going to be doing in intro sequence or a graphical opening for a show. If you wanted to even give it a little bit more pop, you can go to your effects and apply some kind of color effect to it. I'm gonna get a little bit bold. May not look amazing, but let's just go something. Comment. Basic. Very cool has a little bit more pop to it. I would probably, of course, finessed this effect a little bit more, but it shows you the idea that you can mess around with freeze frame to give it a little bit more pop to make it stand out a little bit more somehow make it visually different than the normal footage that you have and that will give it a little bit more interesting.
