About This Class

Remixing a classic track can be a great way to get your name out there as a beginning producer. We released this remix as a free download 6 years ago and we officially released this on Spinnin' Records last month. In this course Sam tells you how this project came to be and how it got an official release by clearing and re-singing the samples.

Often described as the Netherlands' most striking DJ duo, Mr. Belt & Wezol stand out both production and appearance wise. Hits like "Finally", "Boogie Wonderland" and "Let’s All Chant" have an old school house and disco vibe, twisted with Mr. B&W’s characteristic dynamic drops. While their sound is easily recognizable among the other Spinnin’ Records' releases, there's also another piece to the cake that makes this act special: their videos. Always spot on between humor and originality it often makes the fans eager to not only listen to the next track, but also to see the next track.

With their packed festival schedule there is a big chance you will see the guys in real life. 2018 marked their debut at Tomorrowland and Wish Outdoor Mexico. Shows like those on Kingsday were celebrated with four appearances throughout all corners of the Netherlands. But if you really want to see the guys in their element, you should visit their "The Cuckoo’s Nest" hostings and clubshows. Here they play long solo sets or invite all of their DJ friends for a huge back2back frenzy. The ADE editions are traditionally sold out and new editions will be announced all year round.

1. Intro: Yo what's up, guys today I'm going to show you how we made homeless. If you haven't heard against, this is what it sounds like. Recently came out on spinning and let's dive into the project. So this is one of the first tracks we ever made as Mr. Bell and weasel. I think the release dates of the original free downloads, Beck in today's was 2015. We now rereleased. Its. So I did a couple of things to it. First of all, we cleared the sample because obviously there's a sample in there. We'll go into that a bit later. I read it, the mix. The symbols replayed of course, and I made some small tweaks. So the reason why we are releasing this track right now is because to this day, we still play homeless in our sets. It's been a staple, it always works. Everyone knows your original sample and I think the Flip than I did to add still pretty cool. And also to market right now. You see now that house, house music is becoming more popular again. And I think yet homeless was a pretty, it fits pretty well in that chapter, I think so. I think it was also a good moments to release his trick. Anyway, let's dive into the actual project. 2. The sample: Let's start off with the sample. If you're slightly into house music, you probably know that the sample in this song is by crystal waters. It's called gypsy woman, she's homeless. It's a classic. And in this version, we coverts the sample we use as a cover. So that means that you can use the lyrics, you can use the, the instruments that you have to replay them and rushing them. So we used a company for that. It's called sample replace, which is different than the company that we usually use, which is called replay haven't. But simple replace. Here's the websites. They the tons of sampling or re, singing and replaying all sorts of samples. Like a endorse pump it up right here. And often it's, it's such a good match. So if you want the sample rate plates, go check out these guys. And yes. So in this case, that's also what happens. The Oregon Guthrie plates ends the focal cause re plates if we listen to the original. So that's quite a big difference. I think the focal is not drowning in reverse as is in the original. And I was really glad that I was really happy with that because that meant that I could control the vocal a lot more. And also the organ if we compare it to the original, almost 100%. So I'm really glad With that. I think we didn't have to make any offers in terms of the quality of this trick. 3. Flip it!: So that's the replaying of the sample. If you noted track, you probably know that after that sample section, there's a flip of the sample going on. It's this far. So this flip, I call it, is just a sample of the organ, but it's weeks. It's sliced in slides. Sex, which is FL Studio native plug-in, and then arranged in a different way. So if we go to the pattern right here, it's just a matter of finding cool rhythm and finding the right notes. 4. Dynamic EQ: So one thing I learned here is replayed organ was sounding almost like a 100% match, but of course it's not the same origin. You know, there's going to be some differences. And if we just take off the dequeuing right here, you can really hear that in this organism there's a few resonances which are sounding really harsh to me. So you can, especially here in these nodes and these nodes. And I was trying to find a way how to take out those annoying resonance is right there. So one thing I thought of doing was to, you know, just EQ outs the annoying resonances. But that meant that all the other nodes of the Oregon, which weren't sounding harsh at all, are also being applied that same EQ. So that wasn't working out. So I was thinking maybe I should just ran the routes. Those notes that are shouting harsh. And I could of course do that, but that would be kind of a hassle. Ends, any ends. I found this thing which I haven't used anytime before. It is project called dynamic dequeuing. I know it's a pretty standard term, but I haven't used that's anywhere except for in this project and now nowadays I use it all the time. So basically what you do is you find the nodes that are shouting bats. Turn on the EQ right here. You can see right here, these, these frequencies right here where these points are, those where the annoying frequencies. And you just find that by doing this and just going from spectrum there you find them. And if we, if we just take this, and if we just take them off for a second, let's take these nodes. This one is doing that. And you know, that's how I got rid of all the resonances and all the annoying harsh frequencies into sounds, ends the rest of the song. The rest of the pattern right here is not getting affected by this because it's, it works like, you know, it's dynamic, like dynamic compressor, dynamic events, whatever. It works with a certain thresholds. And this is the threshold right here. So if it goes above a certain level, like this level, its puts the volume of that frequency down a notch. And for me that this was mind-blowing. And I use it in vocals and in certain scenes to take out little annoying sounds. So yeah, for me that was a huge help and also a huge discovery. I think. So, yeah, in this way, you you alter the sounds when the frequency peaks, but you don't alter the sounds when the frequency is just at a normal level. So yeah, if you have a sound with harsh frequencies like this one, this is one way to get rid of them. 5. Exporting stems: So if we go through the project right here, you can see that there's a lot of stamps, wave stamps. And as I've told, the original track was made in 2015 on an old laptop. And I couldn't just take that project and load it in this project because, you know, all the plug-ins where on different locations and stuff, everything everything was going corrupts. And it's when I go back to that project, that old projects. We can do that in a second. Then what would you guys but for me, when a project gets too messy, I I often Ken's work in its anymore because you know, you add something to it and then it gets lost in the playlist. And this is also one of the reasons why stage with FL Studio 12th for such a long time, you know, I'm now working with 20, as you can see here. But in FL Studio 12, you still had the blocks. And the blocks made it really hard to have a disorganized projects. Because, you know, the blocks research was, was so well organized with those blocks. Nowadays I work with a famous editor and it's okay as long as you keep track of everything. But anyway, if you have a old projects which has potential, but it's just too old to work in. I would really suggest going back to that project, organize it somewhat like give everything a good name. Like, you know, the, the names you see here, you know, homeless 20-20, collapse them. Burke stem, open high hats. Then just simply throw, throw all those separate stamps in their own mixer bows, and then go to exports, wave, give it some kind of name. And then right here, click Spread makes her tracks. That way you get all your separate mixing bus tracks separately and then you can throw them in your new DAW columns would his methods, of course, is that you can easily find the source of some of the sounds. You know, if we go to the base, for example, which is right here, it's all sounds based. Of course, you can't actually go into nexus or silence or mess if fines or alternate sounds in its synthesis models, the only way you can alternate southeast my changing its processing. So luckily, I still have the projects. So let's go try and open that. 6. The old project file: And as you can see right here from the get-go, it's already olds and an organized projects. It's also because it's being imported from an earlier version of Studio, which also doesn't really help for its organization. But at least in this projects we can go into the actual sounds that I used. So don't mind the mics because this is the old mix. Okay. 7. The bass: So if we go to the base, you know, the drought is the base and a cut, a cut up version of that sample. So we've covered the sample, let's talk about the base. So this is the base pattern. So if we look at all these base sounds right here, we can split them in three separate groups. We have sub-e slab base, which is nexus, and it's just a pretty set from the guitars folder. And if we use the rest. And if you know next, as you probably know that it's a sample-based plugin, which means that you can't really alter the sounds that much with what you can do is you can go to the mics right here and there you can see the different sounds that nexus is layering. So in this case there's two sounds, 12 right here and here you can change their levels. So this sounds consists of so those who sounds make the sloppy base kind of sounds. And again, I didn't sound design anything about this. But that's the sup of the base. If we didn't go to all the sounds right here. So I'll just silence. I'm not sure why I used three different sounds for this. I mean, it's a really Standards movie kind of base. But you can say that the sounds, the sounds they make up for like the edge of the base, you know that the distortion kinda edge. And then as a church group, we have this sample-based part of the base right here. And I think that's there to put more emphasis on the melody. Because of course it's a very melodic baseline, way more complicated and difficult than my usual stuff. And I, there's not much, not much repetition going on in this, in this pattern. It's changes up like all the time and it only repeats for two patterns. So I think that's pretty amazing that it still sounds somewhat okay. Oh, I forget one sounds. And that's this sound. It's the UW base by FL Studio. It's one of its earliest native plugins. And it's a really good imitation of a bass guitar. And I use it for the fall, the base follower and based that is being used every now and then. Just turn everything on. So it's this sound right here. And if you don't know it already, you can use the slide notes. You can use these five nodes, which is right there to make FL Studio native plug-ins slide of the difference in a certain way. So we can, you know, put away lower. And it was used a lot in the Afro Jack Dutch house. There's no to really make. That's where it's voice effects. And again, it works really well in this case for the bass guitar nodes. And I, yeah, that's, that's the whole base sounds. As I've said before, I render its outs, the separate bass sounds to separate base groups to make a new mix in the new project. Because you know, in this project it's ready yet. Ready. Hello, I think I'm also using the old speakers right now, but yeah. 8. The fills: Another important theme of this trick is the fills that I used. So every, every 16 bars, there's a skip off the beads to give to the track some room to make a fill and you can hear it. It's right here. So that's crash right here. That's the lady, you know, the initial drop off. That second part is the drop should be at this point right here. But I have the latest, so I have some time to play with the melodic stuff right here. And that's happening here. But where it's also happening is in the second Drop. So if you go to the second row right here, it doesn't drop at the place where it's supposed to drop. It's dropping one bar later or yeah, one more later. So what did the achieves is that you expect to dance at that point. But instead of that, there's like an edit, like a delayed climax, which works really well on the dance floor. And also one of the reasons why we still played a strike to this day. The second buildup, it all builds up to a certain moments where it should drop, but it doesn't. And then it drops a little bit later. Which really adds, like, what does it adds? Adds. It adds some complexity, I think, to how people behave on the dance floor. Because you know, when you're expected to dance and you can't dance yet because there's no low information. And then it does come. You're kinda surprised by it. Which is always nice. You know, if you're, if you get surprised, it doesn't work in doesn't always work. But in this case, I think it does. One more family to tell you about this trick. Like this was made in 2015. And back in those days, I didn't really have a good ear for what sounded in tune and whatnot. So if we listen to this outro right here, you can really hear that I did unready. Pay much attention to the incompleteness of the vocal. So as you can hear, it's barely, barely in tune, maybe just out of tune. And of course in the new version, I fix that as well. So yeah, I think that's all about, I can tell you about this trick.
