About This Class
Submerge in the wonderful world of patterns and learn how to use the basic Illustrator tools to bring to life your ideas. You'll learn how to create a repeat both old-school and using Illustrator CS6 new Pattern Tool. I'll share with you my very own design methodology for you to create beautiful and functional designs from scratch. At the end of the class you'll be able to create your own repeats for you to use however you want; for example, to sell your own fabric (and other cool products) on Spoonflower.
I've recently partnered with my good friend and fellow designer Faye Brown to host a Valentine's Challenge. Enroll today both classes and start the fun. Design your perfect Valentine's card and matching gift wrap paper. For more details see "Upcoming Events" in the right sidebar.
What You'll Learn
- Illustrator 101. I will show you how to use (and where to find) most of Illustrator's tools essential for you to create your beautiful designs.
- All About Motifs. The basic elements of a pattern can be simple or complicated, tiny or huge, one of a kind or many... it all depends on you, your style and the design you want to create.
- All About Repeats. I'll show you the four most common types of repeats, the old-school method to create them, and the new Pattern Tool that comes with Illustrator CS6.
What You'll Make
I'll explain you how to get your hand-drawn sketches vectorised (even if you don't own a scanner), how to apply colour and then easily re-colour your design to create new colour ways, the different types of repeats and how to make them, and solve most of the common problems that arise when using Illustrator. I'll also teach you how to prepare perfect files for you to get your best results on Spoonflower. In addition, I will include different helpful resources and inspirational interviews from great designers that have come to reign repeats.
And most importantly... HAVE FUN!
This awesome class is for surface pattern designers, graphic designers, illustrators, artists, crafters and anyone else who is interested in pattern design using Adobe Illustrator.

This is a great course and helped me back into my Textiles and Surface Pattern Designs.
MaJo gives a loooot of information, tips & tricks! I'm half way through the class and I've already learned so much about making a design concept, sketching, illustrator. I'm definitely happy I chose to do this class! At some points it's a bit distracting for me that the sound recording isn't clear.
I’m a Colombian fashion, textile & surface pattern designer (and a nail-art aficionado) living in Milan and in love with my work. I have over 4 years of experience in the fashion world; two of which have been focused on my passion for textile design.
I have designed evening-wear collections in Asia, created costumes for belly dancers and performers in my home country and Europe, and will soon have some of my designs featured in the book Patternbase: a Collection of Contemporary Textile and Surface Design.
Last year I started my own surface pattern design brand MaJoBV, and have recently signed a licensing deal with Artscase. I'm happily working on some other deals so that I can have my creations licensed all around the world. In addition, I'm developing my own product line. I sell my work on my Spoonflower, Envelop and Society6 shops and my repeat patterns on PatternDesign.
I studied 4 (out of 5) years of Industrial Design in Colombia, graduated from Fashion & Textile design in Milan, and have taken short courses focusing (but not only) on textile printing techniques (Central Saint Martins, London) and surface pattern design (The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design e-course). I have been using Adobe software (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) and other design programs (like Freehand and Corel Draw) for almost 15 years.
