1. Introduction to the Website Basics Course: Hi there. My name is Andrew and this course is about setting up your first website from scratch. Now you've probably seen a lot. Of course, is about how to use HTML and CSS, and you might have even seen some that talked about how to use JavaScript. This is not one of those courses. There's plenty of people that talk in depth about how to code in the program websites. But if you're like me, you have a business or a block for a personal site that you'd like to set up. But you're not sure how to register your domain name, were set up a hosting account. Or maybe you had someone set up a website for you in the past. And now you'd like to know how to manage your files or edit your files without going back and paying a lot of money for that expensive website development firm. This course is for you. If you're an advanced web programmer, you don't need to take this course. This course is for the rest of us. Would like to know how to set up and register a domain name out of set up a hosting account . How to manage it. Edit files on your computer or a three year hosting company, and also this course is to teach you about other options. What you can do if you want to set up an e commerce website. Thanks for checking out my course. My name's Andrew, and I hope to see you later in the lectures. 2. Overview of the Website Basics Course: Hello and welcome. Before we get started, I'd like to go over What? What we're going to cover during this course and what you're going to gain by going through the lectures. I also know that you paid a lot of money for this course, and I don't want you to waste your time or your money. If this course is not for you but this course is for you. If you're interested in having your own website or if you just want to learn the basics about setting up in building websites, it's also for you if you want a refresher about setting up a Web page. So maybe you've set up a Web page in the past, but you kind of want to go through the process again. And it's also for you if you've had someone else design a website for you and now you don't know how to manage it. And this is probably the most common thing I've seen is individuals or small businesses went to a Web design firm, got a website designed, got it hosted on the Internet, and now they don't know how to manage it. And so they might want to change, a phone number or an email address or a couple paragraphs on their website. But to do that, they have to go back and re hire this expensive Web design firm. So this course is absolutely designed just for you, and it's gonna help you understand how to make those kind of edits to your files and how to manage a website that you already have. Now, if you're an intermediate to advanced Web developer, this course is really not designed for you. It's not a Web development class per se, but we do go through a lot of Web development topics during the course, and it's Maurin, a beginner stage. So if you're an intermediate to advanced Web developer, then you already know how to set up domain names. You already know how to set a posting accounts. You already know how to edit and manage your files, and you already know about MAWR advanced topics in Web development. So this course is really not designed for you, but you should take this course. If you're setting up a website for the first time, you should take this course if you want to learn more about domain names and Web hosting should take this course if you'd like to know about website options. And what I mean by that is other options that you have in addition to building your own site. And so, as you go through this course, you may decide Hey, I don't want to set up my own website. What else can I do? Or I have any commerce. I it's gonna take me too long to learn all the ins and outs of developing my very own e commerce site. So now what do I do? So we're gonna talk about what options you have in that situation. And lastly should also take this course. If you're wondering what all or what MAWR you can do yourself, maybe you've got a basic website, but now you're you're wondering. Do I need to go hire someone else? Can I do more sophisticated things on my own or not? And we're gonna briefly go over some of the more sophisticated and more advanced things you can do completely on your own. With the help of some online resource is the first goal of this course is to explain domain names. The second goal of this course is to explain the role of hosting companies. The third goal is to create our own basic Web page, and the fourth goal is to manage and upload Web files. The fifth goal is to give you an overview of other options that you have in addition to creating your own Web page. And the last goal is to discuss more advanced Web topics. Domain names. We're gonna talk about what they are and kind of the science behind them. We're gonna discuss how much they cost and where you can get him and where I get them. When we talk about Web hosting, we're gonna talk about what, what it is, how it works and where you can go to get. Web hosting will also discuss some of the Web hosting companies I like and some that I've used and don't really like. Next we'll talk about creating pages. We'll discuss a couple different options that you have for creating pages one using, AH, text editor like a shown on the right, and we'll also discuss more of ah sophisticated user interface. Similar toe how you might edit files in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. We'll talk about where you confined help for creating pages and find examples online. The correct Syntex and then we'll actually work through a basic example similar again to the picture on the right will work through it. Using a text editor will work through it using a more sophisticated editor, and we'll even go through, Ah, using some help documentation online. We'll talk about how to manage your files. So how you can edit your pages through one of the options that I just mentioned or edit your pages right on your hosting account. And then we'll also talk about how to upload files from your own computer. We'll talk about other options that you might want when you're not gonna build your own website. So if you decide to go with any commerce route and you don't want to try building that on your own, which I would not suggest doing, we'll talk about some other options for you. And lastly, we'll talk about some more advanced topics, and I'll give you a very brief overview from my own personal websites and some client websites that shows you what you can do with CSS and photo shop. What you could do with PHP Java script and my SQL just a little bit about me. I started coding or programming about 14 or more years ago, and I actually went to school for a few years and studied computer technology. And that's really where I got my start in Web development. And ever since then I've been involved in some form of Web applications or Web development , and along the way I've helped a lot of a lot of people, my friends or family, and even some clients set up their own websites. I got Teoh work at a university for a few years when I went back to school and actually developed very large scale Web applications there interactive Web pages that students use for projects. And so that's where I learned a lot more advanced topics, and along the way I've got to start several online businesses of my own. I don't mean to be a say that in a boastful way at all, but it's given me a lot of experience designing and developing websites, whether therefore small websites for individuals or their very large and dynamic websites that you might find it a university. A quick note about taking this course, the lectures do build on each other. So please, please don't skip any and I will provide you links after the lectures. So you don't have to try to scramble to write down links. If you see a website that you want to remember, you want to go back to and visit later. Don't worry. I'll provide you the links after the lectures. Guys, this course is for you. So please let me know if you'd like something clarified. And if you're not completely 100% satisfied with the course, please let me know right away, because I'll do everything I can to make it right. And as long as their students taking this course, I'll be looking at the comments and I'll be responding to your questions. And if I need to add lectures, I absolutely will. I want to make this very valuable course for you. So thanks a lot. And I hope you 3. Find and Register your domain name in minutes: in this lecture will talk about domain names. Just talk about what they are, how much they cost and where you can get them. Www dot google dot com is an entire domain name. If you go in search online for domain names, you'll see images come up to ST dot edu dot ord dot biz dot net, but that's only a portion of the domain name. Www dot google dot com is an entire domain name if you look at an entire U R L that you see in your Web browser and your eldest stands for Uniform Resource locator at the beginning, you see http, or you may also see https for secure pages. And then after the 1st 2 slashes, you'll see the domain name. So in this example, it's www is the host, which is the typical host that can also typically be left off. And then you see the second level part of the domain name a W tie, which is normally where we put our business name or block name our company name and then you see the top level dot com. There's several different top level domains dot com dot u dot or dot gov dot biz, And then there's actually branching out into a whole lot of new ones right now. But dot com is the most typical, and then after that is the actual specific Web page. It's not part of the domain name, and there's really a specific Web page for, you know, every different page. Obviously, Resource is dot PHP, though, is an actual file, so dot PHP is the file type. You know, if this was a word document, it would be Resource is dot d o C or D o C X, and so those actual Web page files are stored on a server. And then that's what you actually see eyes that file being displayed on the Web page. So if you go online and search the Internet, you can find a lot information about the Internet. So let's just go and look real quick. You can go and find out a whole wealth of information about domain names if you care, and then what you'll find is there's a domain name system usually shortened as DNFs, and the domain name system basically takes that human readable domain name that we just looked at. Www dot google dot com, and it translates that into a number of 32 bit number called an I P address. An I P address is unique, and there's one for every domain name, and it's basically what the computer uses. So your domain name the words. It's just so you and I can read it. But behind that, there is a unique I p address. You can also find out more about you. RL's if you care. I don't think it's really pertinent to this course that you do a whole lot more research on those things. But I want you to know kind of a little history on how these things work. So back to domain names. How much do they cost? I usually spend about 10 or $11 a year per domain name. Now you'll find that there's a whole lot of different options on domain names, how much they cost, and a lot of times, if you package them together with your Web hosting, the company will offer you the domain name free for the first year, and we'll talk a whole lot more about Web hosting in a later lecture. So don't worry about that right now, but typically, I buy my domain names separate just because it's a whole lot easier for me to have all mine domain names in one place. And when you start tying them together with your Web hosting packages, I found that some companies try to do a lot of up selling. And, yeah, they may offer free the first year, but that it's going to be twice as much the second year. And I would just prefer to pay the same price every year and not have to worry about those prices going up or a bunch of up selling. So anyway, about 10 or 11 bucks a year if you buy it, separate. If you're really on a cost constraint for now, you can package it with your hosting and get it free for the first year. So where do you get domain names? I've been using name cheap dot com a lot the last couple years, and I have probably 15 or 20 domain names on name Cheap Right now, I found that the site is it's clean and simple. It's really easy for me to use, and their prices are very good. Um, for most dot com Domain names I spend about. I think it's just under 11 bucks a year, and they also give me something called Who is Guard? Which kind of protects my identity. They throw that in free, and we'll talk about that more in a little bit now. If you go online and you search for domain names, you're going to see a whole lot of different options. In fact, domain and hosting companies spend a tremendous amount of money on advertising, uh, domain and hosting or some of the more widely searched terms. And so they have to spend a lot of money trying to promote themselves to you and I. You can also, you go and search best domain names and you'll see here Ah, lot of top 10 or top 15. Now, if you go here and click, uh, 10 best domain hosts. What you're going to see is this list here. Now, when you scroll down and see a lot of different options, um, one at the bottom Go Daddy, which we saw in the search results. Very popular. I'm sure you've seen their logo. They spend millions of dollars advertising, but interestingly enough, there only rated about 2.5 stars and really, a lot of these in the top. This top 10 review R rated very low, so you don't see name cheap dot com here. Um, the big reason is in the past, they have not been really a web hosting service. They've more just been a domain service. And I think this page is just showing hosting companies and that offer domain service. But basically, any hosting company is gonna offer you domain name registration service. So just to give you an example, let's go to name cheap. And here, you know, I type in Andrew Tie and let's see if we can find domain Andrew tie. Obviously, we're not gonna find it because I already have that. But, uh, this is what would happen and show, you know, it's not available, and then it give you some options. Well, you could do Andrew tie dot C o r. Andrew tied at us. That was actually pretty cheap. I should probably buy it, but, um, nothing there. So there's a couple different options. You can keep trying different, different things here. And what I found to be completely honest is there's a lot of people that have gone out and they've spent a lot of money buying up domain names. Kind of like an investment. I highly doubt you're gonna find a single word available. In fact, I'm 100% sure you're not gonna find one word available. And I'm very skeptical that you're gonna find the two words you want. You know, like Andrew Tie is a little different because it's a name, But you're probably not gonna find to common words together. They're pretty much taken. And if they're pretty common word, you're not gonna find three together. So what you can do is you can keep typing things in here trying different things. There's also a lot of websites, though, that will offer you combinations. So if you say type in the words Andrew tie, they'll give you a bunch of different options. So here's one that I have not used. Ah, whole lot. It's called panna Be, uh, I haven't used it much. There's a whole bunch of different sites like this. But if you type in Andrew tie here, um, they'll give me a whole bunch of different options. I know. I guess this broken heart thing needs. It's not available. But here they say, Okay, well, you could swap I for Why? That's interesting. Um, or here's one that's available. Let's go. Andrew tie. Well, maybe I'd be OK with that so we could go back to name cheap and type in Go Andrew tie and see what it says. So it's searching right now, and sure enough, go Andrew ties available. So come here at it to the cart. So now if we just go on, we click. Few cart be able to see domain registration 10 69. And then there's this thing called Who is guard and it's free. And who is guard? Basically protect your identity online when someone goes to see the what's called the Who is information on your website? Uh, name cheap is gonna guard that for me. So what it looks like is this This is basically the information that somebody would find if they searched for my information on who is dot net website. So we're see things like City is Panama, um, to P o address has got some really funky emails and that that's helpful because sometimes I don't want to just you know, like robots to be able to search and find my email address and start spamming me. And so it's helpful to protect your identity. Let me just show you the who is. So here's the Who is dot net. We go to that. We're going to see this. I already typed it in a w tie dot com, which is another one of my sites. Here's information. It basically doesn't show you anything for eight of you. Tie dot com And that's because that who is guard is protecting it now. Anybody can come and type in any site here. And if you don't have the who is guard, they're going to see personal email right here. Now. If we went and we typed it in for Google, scroll down. This is for again google dot com. Scroll down. We'll see. This is not protected. So domain name service Admin. Google Incorporated Mountain View, California and you'll see an email address here that's actually a Google email address and phone number fax. Now they have to have some of this public, and obviously they're set up to handle it. But I don't always want this information on my Web sites more. You know, sometimes on my website I will have personal information. But this is something that's easy for robots and spammers. To come and get information so named cheap gives it to me for free. If you go to hosting company and they say, Hey, we'll give you your domain name free for the first year. It sounds pretty good, because if you go back hey, we're spending 10 69 to get a domain separately. But if you go to that hosting company, they're gonna charge you probably 10 or 12 or maybe more dollars for this who is guard. So you actually can end up spending mawr. Even though this domain registration is free the first year at a hosting company, you're gonna actually spend more money because they'll charge you a lot more for this. Who is Guard? Um, so I really like buying my domain. Separate, I guess, is my point, because it's a very good value. And after your first year, those hosting companies are going to charge you probably more than the 10 69. And that's certainly charging more than 2 88 or free for the Who is guard eso I, like name cheap. It's got all my you know, all my domains. Um, all in one place, I could go on. Look at him. Uh, shows me my who is guard subscriptions. Everything's pretty nice and neat. And that wraps it up on domain names. We talked about what they are in a little of the science behind him. How much they cost, Usually 10 or $11 a year. If you buy them separately, you can also get them free if you get him is part of your hosting package. But if you wanna have who is guard privacy, it's gonna cost you 10 or $12. Uh, if you buy, it is part of your hosting package. We also talked about where you can get him. I really like to use name cheap, but I've used a whole lot of other companies, like in Motion, which is my hosting company. Fat cow. Lunar pages even Go Daddy, which I don't particularly like. But there's tons of options out there for you. And if you go on your Google, you'll find almost more information than you can handle. So that's why I've showed you what I use. But At the end of the day, you need to have a domain name because that's how you're gonna uniquely identify your own website on the Internet. Up next, we'll talk about Web hosting. My name is Andrew. Tie on. This lecture has been about domain names. Thanks for watching. I hope you found it useful. 4. Register Domain Name: Now we're gonna start the case study, and I think this is gonna be a good way for us to tie everything together. All the different sections and lectures weaken really time together with the case study. And I'm not going to spend a lot of time explaining You know what I'm doing because we're talking about that in the previous lecture. And so now in the case study, we can really just focus on means showing you exactly how to do it. And hopefully everything will flow together from section to section if you go through the case study. So I tried to think of something that would kind of relate to a lot of people. And so, for the case study, I think we're gonna go through setting up a website to display stories and maybe pictures from a recent trip. So the domain we're gonna look for is wild Alaska trip. So the first step in the case study obviously is registering a domain. So we're going to go right now and try to do that. Okay, So first thing I'm gonna do is just type it in and see what happens. Wild Alaska trip dot com So this is what comes up. So that's a pretty good indicator that that domain is available. So now I'm gonna go to name cheap and see if it is indeed available. And if it is to go ahead and buy it wild Alaska trip mist hit, Enter and it's searching. And sure enough, wild Alaska trip is available. Fantastic. So I'm gonna go ahead, added to cart and then in just your view cart and make sure that a lot of renew is off here . Pottery, news off. Gonna get this free. Who is guard? And, you know, I've looked It's really gonna be to 88 the next year, both of these air for one year. So we're good to go. So I'm gonna confirm order. Okay, So I went ahead and I paid for it. And now I've come to my account, just gone to my account and then manage domains and then modify domain. So here I am modified a main wild Alaska trip so you can see it's purchased. Just Azizi, is that it's already in my account. And if we just scroll down here, we're going to see that all this contact information all this stuff right here is not my actual information. And that's what that who is guard does. So when someone goes and looks me up on who is dot net or they look up wild Alaska trip, this is what they're going to see. So they're not going to see our our personal information if if we don't want him to, like address and phone number and all that jazz, so that's it. We registered our domain, and now we're ready to move on to the next section. But before we dio, I want to just show you. So now let's go on. Let's search for Wild Alaska trip now so it still shows it's not available. And the reason for that is, and you'll probably notice this when you set up your own domain is it takes a little bit for something to show up, maybe 12 to 24 hours at the most. I've found a lot of times it'll show up with just within just a few hours, and once it does show up, it's gonna show some generic thing that says name cheap on it because we haven't done anything with its tomainia. It just wild Alaska trip dot com, but we haven't put anything on this Web page, so name cheap. Now that we've purchased it through them, they're gonna put something on this page. So if we check back in a couple hours, it'll probably say name cheap and not much else. So I'll try to show you a screenshot of that in the next part of the case study.
