1. Introduction: Hi, My name is Lena, and I'm here to teach recording for beginners. In this course, we will learn recording, mixing and mastering through iPhone and some applications. All these techniques that you have learned in this course can also being used in other odio pro cramps. If you're a musician, wanted to make a quality recording off your demo or future music producer wanting to learn basic techniques, off recording or just a music lover wants into surprise and love one with the awesome recording. Then this course is for you. Nowadays we can make good recordings just with our smartphones. Therefore, this course teaches you a couple of tricks how to achieve the best quality recording with your smartphone as possible, so let's begin. 2. Lesson 1 Setting up a session in Garageband: Hello, everybody. And welcome to my first lesson in this session. We were looking to setting up a recording session on carriage ban on iPhone first open carriage bent. Now create a new session by pressing the plus mark on the left side corner breast audio recorder. This will create a new audio track that allows you to records directly from your phone to the track. You can create another truck that allows you to do a multi tracked session on your iPhone. Just click the plus mark under the trucks. Um, press audio recorded again. No. You can see the view to all your tracks above all these tracks, you have ah, couple buttons called effects on this lighter button. When you press this lighter button, you can get a screen that shows all the Odier recorder FX you commuted. You can solo it. Ah, control the track volume and truck panning and all the effects and blood ing's. Next to that, there's an FX button which allows you to do all kinda cool, funky FX on your track. We're not gonna go through too much of that in these sessions, but have a have a go on moving the pointer, you can select the area you want to listen to buy breast in the arrow next to the play button. You can go directly to the beginning, off the song next to the blade busting on the right side. There's the record button that allows you to count in Andi record with your microphone. You can double click what you have recorded on, just delete it. So those controllers there is a Metro No, which allows you to hear the Metrodome while you're recording on this little arrow. Here is the previous button. Now we can go to the settings off the session, press the loop on you can select different files or loops or anything you can just want to add into the track. From here, we can go to the settings where there's Metrodome and countin you can ah put the tempo, which I will select oot 1 20 Next, I will pick the time signature, which my will selected four for. You can also get 34 or 68 key, which is really important so that all the meaty sessions and every single instrument is on the same key. I will pitch C major we will press the advance bottom, which will allow you to make a multi track recording, which I will allow on the two other options. We'll let you run and use courage men, same time as other applications. On the right corner, you will see a little cross on. You can select the length off the song from here. I want to go quite long so that I have space to play around and make it as long as that want to. So I select 50 bars and here we go. We have successfully started a session on it's ready for recording. In the next lesson, I will go through some basic feet structures on how to make a beat, its application called Oxi. So see you in the next listen. 3. Lesson 2 Creating beats on Auxy: Hello, everybody. And welcome to the lesson Number two. Today we're gonna create a bead with a decision that start by opening the application on clicking a new project. This will let you into screen that shows you instruments on. I will add another instrument on. I will pick drums. This will show all the drums that I can select from. I will select that right now and I can change it later. But before we start recording, we need to do the settings. So that there, same as we did encouragement. So that means that I will need to put their timber in 1 20 on the key needs to be in C major, as I did encouragement before I'm from the scale button. I can choose if I want major or minor while recording drums. The swing button is really important as it kind of creates more human effect or it's a level said it should to right now and now we can start making some really cool beats. So click the drum loop from the left corner. You can pick the length off the bar, so I will just go with the one bar. These other button here lets you decide how defined your bars are gonna be on for this session. 16 beats per a bar will do fine. We'll start making the beat, but with the adding the base, which is the lowest on the lowest row off the screen, I will add one in the middle and one on. After this surge, I will also add snare, which is 1/3 to row from the bottom on. I will add it to everything I can't even beat on, and then I will just put some fakers fall. You should just create a bead, voices bottoms and see what comes out. Or you can just listen to. If you have never made beats before, you could maybe listen to someone else's songs on Just get the Roof model but and just groove thing where the clocks go. Now we can see our lute playing in their on weaken. Click it on, play it while we choose a trumpet that we think that is the most suitable. So I will just keep that one on pressing Okay, on now, all the loops can be plate Same time. I will just delete this. Not for now, because I just want to use the drumbeat for my song, encourage bands and you our project that we will great in there. So I will delete all that on make space just for the salute. I want to export my sessions. I will go to this light bar on the right. I'm press export press Render the projects on Wait until it has loaded on. Here you go. Your beat has been rendered on. Now you can just ah save it as old You on peak a place that you want to save it to will put it on my files in which are in iCloud. So example if I want to add it to my computer or my other projects I will just have it on my iCloud and I can just drop, drag and drop it where everyone wants it. And here we go. We have created a drumbeat. So in the next lesson I will show you how to import this drumbeat into the courage runs session. See you then 4. Lesson 3 Inserting files in to your Garageband session: Hello, everybody. And welcome to the lesson Number three. Today we're gonna learn about importing of file into your courage bands session. Firstly, you press the loop sign on the right corner and here you can select the file you want to import. I want to import the one that we did in the last episode in Oxy. You simply just drag and drop it to the old Your truck. You wanna have it in on? There we go. Because this is a drum loop. We wanna make sure that the inside even on its fits inside of four bars next on one of copy the loop click it umbra Skopje on. Then I just put the navigation tool in the end of the other loop and you click paste next year Repeats the pace. Comment as many time as you need so that you have the whole length off your song by clicking the arrow on the left side of the play button. You can go directly to the beginning of the cells on here. Lesson 4 Recording Guitar: Hello, everybody. And welcome to the lesson Number four. Today you're gonna learn how to record a guitar with your iPhone. So let's talk about a couple of things before recordings are, firstly location, trying to find a room with as little reflection as possible. So example. If you're recording your bedroom, just remember to close the courage and so the sounds stays inside of the room. So the next thing on the list is a microphone on, even though smartphone microphones are quite good quality and nowadays especially, we know how to edit the sound later in the mixing process. Still, always go for the better microphone if you have the opportunity for it. On third thing on the lace is headphones and metronome. Of course, if the song is like freestyle and you don't wanna use the Metrodome, then don't worry about it. But it does help keeping control the meaty on all the other instruments. When you add other tracks on the session and the fourth important point is, always tune your instrument. I know it feels quite obvious the same time I see, and it happened so many times that people don't actually used time to two names from improbably on, then the rest of the recording and meaty just doesn't fit to the track because your first instrument is in tune. So be careful with that, and now we can go to the recording. So set your phone in front of you on a stable service, so I use my table. And now we're getting to the most important thing about recording with low quality microphone at home. So you need to trying to get the microphone as close to the guitar as you can without burning it. So without the sound going Peking to the red area, therefore, the IMF, the distance between a microphone and guitar is extremely important because you need to get the direct sound from a guitar to your microphone instead of getting the room vibration around the Qatar. So that's why I try as many times you can, just trying to find the good sport so that you guitar sounds really strong and powerful. Lesson 5 Recording MIDI: Hello, everybody. And welcome to the lesson Number five here. We gonna learn about recording a meeting key part. Firstly, you go to attracts and add a new truck. Lesson 6 Recording Vocals: Hello and welcome to the lesson Number six, where you will learn how to record vocals with an iPhone. So, firstly, I recommend you to go back to the video number four. To recap, just have a recap off the basic important factors off recording, like space, a microphone and the distance between the instrument on the microphone. So when we start, I'd like to just reconsider the space and make sure that you have closed your courage ins on your own Uncomfortable good sound in space. Place the microphone about on the level off your face but the head frozen and make sure that your session is ready for recording. So what we want to Dewey's make a new track on audio recorder. You need to test that old your level contesting the single. You need to make sure that the singles keeps in the middle section and doesn't go to red and yellow. Have they drunk enough water? These little things has a massive impact to the final recording, so make sure that everything is ask good as it can be. When the truck is recorded, you will see it in the truck display with the other trucks, so make sure that you listen back to it many, many times, and if you're not happy with it, just go ahead melting boot of my my into the melting. But remember that recording vocals can be really frustrating time for everybody. Because even though you would be a professional, just a beginner, everybody takes many takes. Usually on it's it's completely normal. Just have a break and just think about it and just come back and dry again. When you're happy with your vocal track, you have managed to record four different tracks for your multi track recording session, so when you play them all together, it sounds bit of a mess. So in the next lesson we will start going through some mixing tips on some basic editing, so keep tuned. I'll see you in the next lesson 8. Lesson 7 What is Mixing? : Hello. Hello and welcome to the lesson number seven, which he said, mixing overview. So what is mixing? Mixing is, firstly, tiding up. The tracks are making sure everything sounds nice and neat and tight. Also making the tracks on a skewed as possible with an iPhone microphone. So we want to make it sound professional ass possible. Next reason why we do mixing is to add death and wiped to the track. So so is that I'm making it sound like we actually recorded in our bedroom. We want to make it sound like we did it in amazing, you know, 100 whole, or we did it in a awesome studio or something. So we want to make it sound larger than life. And the next thing we want to do with mixing is to make the track sit nicely together so we can achieve these with blooding like, um, pressure or e que and making sure that every single instrument and object has a place in the sun. And finally, what we want to do is just a adjust. The levels make sure that everything is nice need and making it sound really pro with some mastering tips So now you can open your session on. We can start looking through some mixing in encouragement so you compress the mixing window on your truck on. We can see firstly outputs. There you can find the track panning, which means that you can put the instrument either to the just left here or to the right here. If you put some instruments on the right or to the left, it can help you to bring some sense off depth into your mix. So, example if you look at a stage in front of you and you see a kid her on the left or you see violin on the right than you pan the guitar to that little bit left on the violin a little bit to the right on. That creates a little bit space into your mix. So under the output settings you can find plug, ings and Eakins. Click that and you will find a setting called noise gates. The really simply explained what it does. It takes the kind of the noise away in under certain level of William. So example. If you have a noisy room and you put noise gate, then he takes the kind of the foster way around the desired recording. Under that, there's a compression that makes really low quality recording sound good. Firstly, there's a tresh hold means how loud the single has to be before compression is a polite and then ratio. How much compression East? A polite attack has some punching this into the mix and gay in a prince. How the volume off the compression and mix is, how much compression are we applying under that you can find the effect e que, which is the F X button on the top of the screen. This blogging kind of lets you play with the frequencies off the track. I will not go too much in detail about that, but press the visual eq you and you will get this really cool looking screen, which shows the frequency areas off the visually cue This equaliser so e que you can control three frequency areas base made on high frequencies. These different areas are made to control the different area frequency levels off different instruments. So simply just saying that we're cutting from something to make something sound better, I will have a completely own episode for E que So I will show how to do it really simply so . Basically, we just want to follow these different frequency levels that we want to separate every single instrument from each other and this, highlight some areas and then take down some areas. It's know as complicated as it sounds. And here we can see echo and reverb that are really good FX to create depth on distance, and we will use them also for cuter and vocals later. So in the next lesson, we will learn how to use all these FX and cheese and comm pressures in different mixing situations. So I will see you shortly in the lesson number eight. 9. Lesson 8 Editing the Tracks: Hello and welcome to the episode off learning, cutting and tying up your tracks. So you really want to do this before you start mixing or editing anything else so that you take all the fathers and all the kind of previous and sounds between the vocals and guitars and stuff of ways of the weekend enjoyed, attracted more and just have a clean, nice sound so that you can caught it? Just move the slider to the position that you want to cut from. Ah, Clicthat points. There we go on quick split and now with the Cedars, you dislike them down. Move the slider again to the other position off the other edge on. Then click it on's splits. Um, pull the sliders down. Now click the peace between the loops on Caught it. Now, another way to cuts is just to go to the end of the track and so slide it towards the sound . So that's kind of like just taking the unnecessary sound away from the beginning or from the middle. So the next step is gonna be a little bit painful and time consuming because you need to repeat these to every single chart and every single gap between all the vocal parts. It's called everything that is unnecessary on that. That would make the makes much more messier. No one hour tracks down nice and tidy weaken. Go to the FX and floodings So more about that in this little night. See you there. 10. Lesson 9 Effects and Plugings: Welcome to the lesson Number nine. Where we gonna learn to use FX and walking's on our session. So firstly, I need to select a track on open the the FX window I will wanna use firstly, start with just putting it into solo mood which is the headphone logo there. And from that screen I will select the blood ings and e que window and I will go to comm pressure. Firstly, I will select threshold minus 25 DP than ratio around over three So 3.6 it's quite good. Attack about 10 milliseconds gain to a bone 9.5 Visit bills on, then mix I will put all the way to 100. Next I will go to the master FX section wears echo on reverb so I will just put a little bit of them. Make sure you find a good balance so that you don't put too much or too less off reverb. It can sound quite like cheap. If you put too much next, I will go back to the blogging Zandi que on Go to the section called Noise Gate. I will put a B minus 51. I will just listen Yeah, minus thirties. Quite good. So it faces out older, but stuff around and voice and make it something better. I will go back to the Master FX on Add little bit reverb to make it sound better. But that's the thing is you just need to go around and just listen and see what fits to your mix Because of every single mixes really different on you know, there's no really right former. So basically, if you go with what I have showed you previously, how you could record them and just add up that to your own music and just remember to just listen and compare comparative other songs or other tracks done. Compare it to my drug if you like, and just see what makes your track really good on want Makes it work. Now I'm just mixing that guitar really similarly, that I did the vocals, adding compression, adding reverb and echo and noise gate This session I'm not gonna money play too much. The sound off drums are the meaty since, but I will definitely makes them more with two in the next episode. So in the next episode we will go through some eking. Andi Yeah, we're starting to get through these cars only. See you soon 11. Lesson 10 Equalizer (EQ) : Welcome to the lesson Number 10. And this is about equalizers. So sit tight because you will learn a lot about frequencies. So firstly, we wanna look at this map. Definitely recommend everybody to download one for your computer just so that when you're mixing, you can go back to the and you can just check So we have electric guitars, we have faces, We have vocals, kick drums and snares. So this month tells you in where On which location? In the frequency spectrum your instrument should be in. Don't worry too much if it looks too difficult. Just kind of like compare what it says on the map. Compare it to what it says on your computer iPhone and your equalizer application. Because if it kind of says like oh, highlighted in 100 then just go to the 100 just pull it up from there, kiddo. Okay, so let's start equalizing stuff. So let's first go to the Qatar drugs so minus the second from the top, So I will highlight it on. I will solo it on. Press that equalizer, go to visual equalizer and here we go. So firstly, we will take the yellow a ball thing around the base area and cuts base until 75 hertz or take the low, low, low frequency it's away. Next, we will, uh, edit the midsection. So we will cuts around to Kate on, then lift around five k. Always listen while you're editing so that you are happy with this sound and just use your ears to determine if you need to cut or add somewhere else. Now we're gonna do the same with the vocal. Firstly, caught around the low end until 100 hertz Next you will need to cut around about 500 hertz from the middle and next the high end We will raise it up, lift around six k So we will bring up higher frequencies in the voice you see out sounds and here bright lights as you're blind at by the fulling of ny Same again with the we will go to the drum truck So mine is the top truck. I will solo it go to the e que and firstly, we will boost the bite base around 200 hertz. Bring that up to get the kick, probably bouncing and then meet. We will cut around five hundreds on. Then we will boost the around four k the snare. So we will get a noise. Bouncy snare. Okay, so next we will go to the synth area so we will solo it over in the EQ on I will press the analyzer button on the left corner. So I will see, um, what's happening with the frequencies? While it's playing so with a MIDI controller like this and send the decider, it kinda plays around in the meat areas. I want to just caught the low end on the high end, leave space to the middle. So here we go. We have four different instrument tracks, all mixed FX comm pressures, Andy Keyes. They should sound quite nicely together now, but we still have a problem with the level. So every single level, it's just Teoh high burning red on the right side there. So what we need to do now is just go through the levels on, learn how we can make the mics sound as balance on dude as possible. In the next episode, I will tell you everything you need to know about adjusting the level, So see you there 12. Lesson 12 Mastering : Hello and welcome to then lesson number 12 which will be about mastering. So, firstly, I would like to import the file that we have done in our iPhone. So I will take it from iCloud on, Drop it to my carriage ban session. So what I want to do with this master in session is to make the track much bigger, fatter on bit louder, just so that all the best qualities off the track will shine through. Desprez the button next to the Caesar button on the top corner on you will get the master and track effect options. Here you have FX output and e que. So if you press the eager button, it will look exactly the same as the one on iPhone Courage. But so here I am, listening to my truck on, I feel like I need to raise it a little bit around 102 100 to bring out the low end off my track. I've also wanna praying out a little bit of the high end. I just want to raise it around 5 to 6 k. So I will settle about 6.5. I think in this mix, I don't need to change the midsection money. I want to just race the loudness on my track. So I will go to the right button on. Just pull it up on that will raise the volume off my track. Next, I will go to the output settings. I will press the calm pressure on just pretty on, and I will raise it up a little bit. So it does exactly the same stuff that we already learned earlier on limiters the next one that I put it on. So basically what limiter does is to make even out the level that comes out off the track. Um, next, I will put low End med on high volumes a little bit higher. I would put a bit more high than mid and low because this is a pop truck. It's popular in this general because high frequencies bring a lot uprightness into the mix . There's actually button also in this blogging, where you can adjust the brightness off the truck. So next I can go to the Effects section, which is basically the overall FX off the whole master track. Hey can add reverb or echo for the whole truck on Here we go with ease. Three plug ins. E kuch kam pressure on FX you can master attract to your good quality recording. So after is really, really quick mastering session I'm gonna export My session is a file so put export to a disc on it will give me option to put my the name of the song on. Then we're to, uh, save its the documents on. Then in what form do I want it? So I want to have it in wave right now because that's a good quality. On 16 bit is it's really the standard off. If you want to share your song in online 16 bits or 24 bits, it's recommendable images that in a way, now you have been able to a record of instruments record vocals.
