About This Class

Getting into the Christmas Spirit? Are you wondering why, again, you have left your holiday card sending so late? Are you trying to find the perfect card? Amidst the pandemic, wouldn't it be lovely to spend an hour creating a beautiful holiday photo postcard? Receiving one of these thoughtfully designed personal items may well be the most positive part of someone's day. We, as artists, can use our skills to shape experiences and deliver specific emotions, even for a moment, whether that is to calm, or to inspire, or to bring joy. Learning to create one of these holiday postcards is just the beginning. It can also be a way for you to earn some extra money, and we can all use that around Christmas time. If you agree with this paragraph, this class may be for you.



You can do anything you want in constructing your design in Photoshop, as you always do, with layers and filters and anything else Photoshop has to offer! I will share my personal experience, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different methods to preparing your art. We will also explore the POD interface. You don't have to limit what you produce to this particular size and shape. There are so many other products and proprtions! I will explain the advantage of my workflow in creating the multi layered design and artwork proportions that can be adapted infinitely for all the other postcards or even folded notecards. I will also show you just how cost-effective it can be to follow my methodology.

1. Introduction and Overview for Holiday Cards: Hi guys and welcome. My name is dollar Nas grant and I'm coming to you from sunny, Manitoba, Canada. We've got a beautiful day here for the beginning of December. And when this class is done, I'm definitely going to be going for a walk. So I'm bringing you this class called quick and easy Christmas postcards to make can sell. I thought that this would be a fun little class to do, as I've been just working on this for a bunch of people, including my kids. They're really easy and I really feel like it's something that you could just do for a fun project. And it's something that you could do to make a little bit of extra cash. Either way, this class is going to teach you all the skills that you need to create this kind of a Christmas postcard with photographs from start to finish. Everybody loves to receive these postcards and they're so inexpensive to create, you will be surprise. So make the first step for yourself and you'll see, I'm doing most of the work in the Photoshop program. But any software that you use that has a similar set of functions will work just fine. Ultimately, you just need a finished piece of flattened artwork that you can upload to the print on demand site. You should be able to complete your project easily within an hour. Are you ready to get started? All right, let's get to it. 2. Preparing Our Layout in Photoshop: Hi guys. Welcome to less than one and less than one here I'm going to give you an overview of what we're going to be doing. And I'm gonna show you some of the examples that I've put together. Let's get started. So this week I found myself really busy doing custom Christmas postcards. I've been doing these for several years and they have proven to be a fairly good seller for me. So I thought I'd share my process with you because it's really simple. And with the price that you see in the last unit, you'll see why you can make some pretty decent money doing this. So I've made the main document, 8.647 by 5.593. This works out to be roughly 5.5 by 8.5. You can actually use the measurement Five and a half by half, and it would work, but this is the precise measurements or the card that we will be printing. Now it's important for you to do it at 300 pixels per inch. So you get a pretty good quality on the picture is like okay. Once you set up your document, you're ready to start putting together your components. The first thing I usually do is start with a background. Now in this document, I've put in a few sample backgrounds for you to take a look at. We're going to do three different invitations and you'll see the setup that I've done for each. Generally what I do is I start by putting in the background. Usually what I do is three report designs. Then I post these and I have customers pick from the backgrounds that I have chosen. Occasionally I've done custom or had customers pick their own background based on something on my website. But I find that this is just more efficient and 99% of the time they end up picking one of the three or four that I have on display. I'm going to show you the one I just did for my daughter because I use that background. I've used a nice text block on the side here. Actually I'm going to enlarge matt white block so that it leads right off the edge. And you can see here that she's given me a good variety of photographs use sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesn't. They just happened to have taken their family photos just recently. And this is actually near my home in forest that's within a 10-minute drive. And it was a beautiful place for pictures. She's had a few studio shots taken of my courses, little ground fun. He is three years old now, and at the moment, we're all living together. We're waiting for our house to be built and my daughter and her family have purchased this house. So right now we're we're in their house and it's not mine anymore. So she had a couple of ideas, seen, something like this message and so asked me to incorporate that. It took a few iterations before I arrived at putting it over to the side here. But this is a good layout that could be used for more people. It wouldn't be a problem to customize or change the backgrounds, for example. But the layout and the wording could be very easy to adapt to anyone's family. So she sent me a bunch of pictures and she upset them by text message. So I was able to just drag and drop them into here. If you couldn't drag and drop, go under file to place. And I usually place embedded that keeps a copy of the photo right in the document rather than linking it to an outside document, I would place hit return, please again, and so on until I had them all imported, at this point, I'd be ready to start doing some composition, so I'm gonna save that to the next lesson. I'll see you there. 3. Enhancing the Photos Using A Stroke and a Drop-Shadow: Hi guys, welcome to lesson two. So you've got all your photographs placed, and now it's time to just make them look a little bit better. Let's add a white outline and a drop shadow. It's really easy. I brought in a couple other photos because I think I'm gonna get rid of this one. So let's pretend that wasn't sent to me by someone to include and just wanna deal with the yellow background. But now we've got all of our pictures here. I'm gonna make sure that I slide those all into a folder. I'm gonna call it picks and slide that into the customer's folder. And of course, you know, you could do separate documents for all of your different customers. It just happens that I get a lot of these kind of all at the same time. I've got some regulars that order from me every year. So I've kind of got a folder with a bunch of them in here. My first step usually is to take and kind of reduce the size of these pictures down. So I'm just going to take a look at this one and see how small it is. That one's a really low resolution one. So I'll often have that happen where a customer sends me a really bad picture. So I generally ask them to take a look and see if they have that picture in high res as well. And if they don't, then I tend to make those low res ones quite small than I grab the for these, these aren't too bad. I would grab all four of these and just kinda reduce them down to a manageable size. So imagining that I'm going to be moving these around to fit. So I generally tend to do them and vote half the size of the original canvas. And then I can of course move them around individually. And you can see here in my Layers panel that currently these are all placed as smart objects. And to do any changes to them, I would need to make phi was applying filters or cleaning them up at all. I would have to rasterize them. So sometimes I do that right at the beginning where I just click on the layer, control-click, make sure you click on the lettering part of it here. If you click here, you're gonna get fees options. But if you click on the lettering or the label of the layer, you get this and you can rasterize the leader. So I'll go ahead and do that for all these real quick. And then I generally just move them around to just be able to see all of the pictures out once. So sometimes this ends up being the layout that you use more often than not, it isn't really because, you know, you still have a lot of adjustments to do to make the sizes work for at least this way you can see them. Let's bring the family to the front. And a lot of times customers will want the one big family photo. Maybe I'll make that one a little bit bigger, then a bunch of smaller ones. So it looks like these three are still a little bit too big. So I'm going to reduce them in size so much so that I've got a little bit more space to play with. Now you'll often get a grouping of professional photos. And most of the time when they are professional photos, you get a color scheme that's pretty consistent. In this case, we've got this one picture that really stands out because of the color. So I'm gonna show you how to deal with that in a minute. Have even gone so far as to suggest to the client, but they not use a particular picture because the color scheme, but let's just say that customer wars really insistent on this picture. So what I might do here is. Use it in this top row and then use the other two at the bottom. Let's see what happens here. What I'm going to do is select this one, this one. So this picture, this picture, and this picture here. And I'm going to use my align tools here in the control bar to make sure that they're lined up at the top. Now, I also want to use this little shortcut to distribute them horizontally. I personally like leaving us space around each one. So what I'm gonna do here is just take this one here and reduce it slightly. So if I hold down, now depends on which version of Photoshop in what you've chosen as your transform preference, I still use my shift key to ensure that the aspect ratio remains the same. So I'm gonna select all three of these again. And then again, I'll use a distributed and that gives me an even spacing on both sides, which I like now what I'd like to do is bring this photo here down. Now you know that you can grab individual items by holding down your command key when you're on your Move Tool. And that's a really handy feature when you're moving around a bunch of objects and you don't want to have to go into the Layers panel here to select every time. So I'm going to slide this picture over here. And I'm going to use that family picture and these two and line those up as well. So this time I'm aligning them at the bottom. Now, I can see that I've got some adjustment to make if I want that photo to work for both the bottom and the top here, unless I move these two down. But what I'm gonna do right now is just change the proportion of this picture a little bit so that I can use it in this space a little bit better. So what I would do in a case like that is select an area that I want to keep. Once you've got the marquee and you're still on the marquee tool, you can move it around, you adjust your cropping. And then I'm going to select inverse, which is Command Shift I and delete. Make sure I'm on just that photo. And delete. And I have adjusted the shape of outward a little bit. So let's pull that over here. And now what I would like to do is crop this one. And again, I'm going to use just my Marquee to select an area, moving around a little bit. Command Shift I to select inverse. And now I've got them trimmed more are left. So the size that I want, I don't mind this overlap over here because there's nothing really being disturbed in there. In these two pictures. It was an issue. You could select the picture that you wanted to crop and do the same thing again, selecting bursts and delete. And then possibly will be to resize this one here. So again, as long as you hold down your command key, you can use your Move Tool without having to go over here to select. So let's make this one a little bit bigger. And I'm going to align this in this on the right-hand side. And then I'm going to drag a selection the edge of that top photo and use it to trim this bottom photo. So I now know that those two are exactly right. Fight aside. And I'm going to trim a little bit off the bottom of this one as well so that I can start figuring out a space here. So one of the things I could do here, I'm thinking what I'll do with this big photo here is also trim a little bit off the sides of it. I liked the cropping of it in general, but I just think that if I could take a little bit off the rate one, if I could take a little bit off both sides, I could make it a little bit larger. And that would help me with the negative space that I need between these two. So I'm gonna just move those down. And you can see I have my smart guides on which is what's helping me to do a lot of the positioning. Now, the only thing that bothers me is Courses space around here. So let's grab this one and, and up to the bottom there, make it a little bit bigger. And I'm gonna make this guy a little bit bigger. So let's perhaps it and just pull on the one corner holding down the Shift key, cricket coaches to weave it bigger on that one. We're going to move this one a little bit closer. Couldn't run them are key down here and take a little bit off of this picture as well. So now I've got everything spaced pretty much correctly. I'll often just at the very end, select just a tiny little bit within these photos and select inverse and go down the list here and delete on each of them to be sure that I've got them crop correctly. Now this one, I may have moved up and done some other changes to it, but you get the idea. And then Let's do the same thing with this space in between to make it as even as possible to this one. So there's numerous ways you could do that. That's just the way I've kind of started using and an else seems to work for me. And I'm going to cheat a little bit and pull this one down just to get that space a little bit more consistent. So we're pretty much ready with our pictures. Because this is in its own folder. I can actually select the photo folder and the background and UC align keys to make sure that it's perfectly centered on the board. As long as this one here was exactly right now I am glad I just check that because it doesn't actually the canvas, it's a little bit bigger, which is why it's giving me what looks like an uneven border here. So I can do a couple of different things. I can just select that one and how did fit to the canvas. I've got a shortcut for that and it'll pop in at the right size if I liked the original proportion or the size of the wood planks, than what I would do is select all copy and paste and then just get rid of that original layer. So now I know that this one here is exactly the right size, as you can see. So I'm going to select it and that folder and align them perfectly. So in the next lesson, what we're gonna do is start adding some effects to these photos. I'll see you there. 4. Finessing and Adding Lettering: Hi guys, welcome to lesson three. In this lesson, we're just going to really perfect our layout and we're going to add finishing touches. Let's get started. I don't want to do here is to add a couple of different effects. Are getting closer to the finished composition that we want. So what I'm going to do with the individual photos is to select them. So I'm going to select this family picture first and I'm going to go under effects here. And what I wanna do is add a white border to them. You can adjust the size of the border here with this slider. And I also want to have a little bit of a drop shadow. So I'm gonna hit drop shadow here. And this you can adjust, you can change whether you have the shadow at the top, the bottom side. I tend to like it at the bottom. So you point this little line upwards, that's where your light sources and that's what casts a shadow here on the photo. And now you can also overhear as grabbed the shadow and move it around. That's kinda fun too, if you're experimenting, not really sure what kinda like that. And then you can, That's how deep of a shadow you want. I like a subtle shadow like this. I've got this set at multiply. You can experiment with the blending mode, you know, to see what you like. I find that multiplier dark and works well and you could adjust the colors. So if you had a background, you're trying to copy the color of, you could click on this color square and then just select some part of your image that you want to kind of copy the color of my mat, that's kinda good. Not much of a difference. Now here I could add other textures and other effects, but I personally find that simple is better, especially when you've got a busy background like this. So I'm going to hit OK here. Now the cool thing is that I can just copy those effects onto the other photos by just simply dragging and holding down my option and command key. So I find that if you hold down those keys first and then start dragging, That's what works the best. So I am just quickly adding, oops, the careful not to double-click. I'm quickly adding that border. And that took what, all of 30 seconds. So that's one of the things I really like because especially when I'm doing a whole bunch for lots of different customers, it's pretty easy to get. Your pictures are prepared in a real hurry. The second lesson where we did all of the resizing and trimming. Usually that just takes me a few minutes and then this takes me less than a minute. I have a flat rate for my cards, so I definitely need to figure out ways to improve my productivity and efficiency. So now that that's all ready to go, it's time to add the message. So what I think I might do here is slide this whole set. And this is one of the beauties of having it in a folder, is being able to slide and resize everything now together. And we're going to look at some different ideas for adding our message here. So if grabbed a few and put them into this older so that we can take a look. And these are just different ideas for you that I've put together, but you can definitely go online and take a look at places like Creative Market. You can search out holiday cards. You can buy templates. It's all up to you, like something like this. If it's worth it by it. Just looking at how they lay them out uses silicon to be original because you've got different photographs, you quite different content. So that's one of the places I looked. And sometimes it just literally search it on Google. And you know, often a customer will send me allele that they really like. So I just chose the word joyful here and I'll show you the first one that I did see. A lot of people like to keep it really simple. I would bring this, of course, above the photos. Very, very simple. You know, make sure your background is going to work. In a case like this, we've got this little dark area in behind. So I would just use the rubber stamped to all sample an area that is a little bit lighter and just painted in to sample it, you just Option click in an area that's a little bit better for you. And then you just paint and it will copy that spot where you need it. Brush out some of the detail that might end up being conflicting. You can even grab an area really light from another spot. And as long as you blended in nicely, it can work from the upper, spent too much time doing this, but you get the idea. So that would be one way of doing it. Alternately, you could get a marquee and feather it, see a 100100 and see if that works. Above that background layer, I will add a layer. Draw my mark here and you can see here that it's going to be super feathered. We're going to drop some probably like a off white creamy color in behind. And I can change the opacity so that it works. You can always choose better fonts that work for whatever background that you have. So that's the one idea. My next idea, let's just hype out one. We'll hide that feathered square. Then let's take a look at another idea. Now this one also involves finding assets that you can use to enhance your design. These can be purchased assets or they can be something that you draw yourself. Actually can't remember where I got piece, whether I bought them or whether I made them myself easily select and move them over if necessary. So I've got it selected that sillier there. And I'm simply just dragging with my move tool and holding down the Shift key to keep it aligned in the right place. And I'm showing you these because these are assets that I've used in the past. And if you can reuse them, and especially if you can reuse the layouts, you can definitely save some time. So again, I'm Command, Shift and dragging and that as long as I'm on the Move tool, it actually cuts and moves it. So as far as this kind of frame, what I do is what I have done is purchased a bunch of frames. I have the mean here, and you can see them all and there's 50 to choose from. So whatever I paid for that, probably five to $10. I've been using this one for years. Let's go into the Finder so I can show you them a little bit more close up. Once I'm in the Finder, I could do this, show view options. And the good thing about that is we can paint up the spacing and enlarge the icon size so you get an idea of which icons might work. Some thinking for that particular layout, maybe this one, so it's nice and narrow so I can right-click on it and open with Photoshop. I'm using 2020 right now. And then I can just select all and copy. But I could've been adhere and use the place command that would have worked as well. And I'm just going to paste. And I'm gonna get rid of this one here. Let's move this one down and use my magic wand to select the inside, add a new layer. And then let's just sample a color from within our photographs here, I'm thinking maybe this, it is a recurring color. We can always change it. I'm just going to sample it and drop it into this frame. And then let's put that lettering on top so we can grab these two and reduce them down a little bit height-wise. You don't want to produce some too much because sometimes it will distort them. A little bit of distortion doesn't seem to hurt. And i'm shifted, dragging it down so it remains in the center and it was for somebody last year. Let's just take that out. And of course, you know, it's whatever the customer has decided that they want for their lettering to double-check that everything is centered. You can select it all, including the pics which are in a older and the background, and then hit your Align center here. So let's check this out and see what we can do about this picture. So sometimes you might want to move a picture to make it work better. In a case like this, you could possibly, I'm going to close all these folders here to make it easier to see for the effects are here and apply it. They can be opened anytime by hitting this little up and down arrow. So this picture and this picture are the two middle ones. So we could move them up. That would be one way to deal with it. We can make them smaller. That's one of the ways you can deal with it. You could choose to move those pictures over to the side. I'm going to group those two and I'm going to group these two. So I'm just select them and hitting this. The reason for that is I can then select both of these groups and align to the top so we can make sure that those two are aligned. And then we can move this photo in the middle. That kinda works. And because these are grouped, we can take all three of these and select them and use the distribute to make sure that they're positioned correctly. And I think what I would do in this case is make this one a little bit larger. I'm holding option while I resize. So that keeps it enlarging from a central point. And then I think I would move these two down again. You could also take and move the pictures over 1 third and a group. It's kinda nice because you can move them like that probably too far. And then select all three and hit that distribute. It can point to move these a little bit closer. And again, I'm going to choose all three and hit that horizontal distribute. So we're getting to the point where this is going to be. What I would consider a useable. What I often do is I will take several ideas, several different layouts to send to someone. And believe me there quickly out with I don't spend a 100 hours on it. I will just take some pre-existing lettering and frames and decorations, and then just adjust whatever is necessary to make it work for that particular proof. One of the quick ways is to just and turn things off and possibly just changed the background like this. If you give a client two or three choices, they're very likely to pick one of them. So this would be definitely, like I said, one of the ones that you could send When I often do when I've got something like this happening though, is I make a change to the way the picture is colored, which may or may not be something that your customer accepts. So which group was at this one? Okay, I would select this picture and hit option command and you, you could simply desaturated. Sometimes that works. It just makes it less glaring or you could colorize it. So this has definitely worked for me in the past. You could see that it works quite nicely even though it has just the one color, we can say, Okay, here I would adjust the levels. So Command L for levels, and then just make sure that you've got really nice contrast. And sometimes just to make it work, I will do two pictures that way. Well, that's just one of the ways that you can change things. Sometimes people don't care. So it's completely up to them. You can just send both versions and have them take a look at it and decide, OK, so let's assume that we've got to finish layout here. I'll meet you in the next lesson where we're going to talk about the saving and exporting of our file. See you there. 5. Exporting, Ordering and the POD Interface: Okay guys, lesson four here. Now all we have to do is prepare the file for upload. I'm going to show you how to do that and then I'll talk you through the ins and outs of the interface at the POD fate. Let's get started. So we're essentially at the point where we could at least in order for this card, if we take a last look, I definitely recommend that you keep a really large margin on the outside because at least three millimeters will be cut off all the edges, so that will give it the full bleed. And we're ready at this point to save it and ready it for our printer. So what I generally do here is I do command shift in S, which is Save As. And I would usually have a folder in here that says something like Christmas card uploads. I'm just going to keep the name here as is, because this is just a demonstration. I'm going to hit save. I'm gonna save it at the maximum. Jpeg is good for this particular company ideal with, though I hit OK here. And then let's just hop on over to the printer site. And I use vista print for printing out these postcards. And there's a couple of reasons why. First of all, as a Vista Print pro dealer, I get really great discounts. So you can see here for 50 cards it will only be $10.19. So that's definitely a huge advantage to get the membership for Pro. It costs U-boat $80 a year, I think. And that gives you discounts on anything that you order from here. And it's definitely worth it, especially when you're trying to do this to make money. Like you're obviously going to mark this up. So based on your time and based on the cost, I've been retailing these, believe it or not, a 100 of them for generally around $50, including my services. I usually run the promotion for this before Black Friday and give an additional 10% off the card that we're going to choose here. We're working on this 5.5 by 8.5, which is a really nice size. So I would just hits horizontal here because about Galileo that I did. And of course, that's something to keep in mind too. If your photo arrangement hadn't worked horizontally, you could have done it vertically as well, but that's something to keep in mind. So I'm going to choose horizontal here, 5.5 by 8.5. Check out all these other ones too. If your client is a little bit picky about sizes, I generally use the standard paper thickness. It's actually a pretty nice card stock, about a 10-point card stocks. So it's quite nice. You could go to one of these better qualities. You'll see that as soon as you switch to premium, you pay a little bit more. It's actually a really nice one though, this premium and either the mat or the soft touch, it's, it's lovely, has a velvety kind of a feel. And you can see it's not that much more expensive. So let's say we were going to do 50. I would hit start designing. And this next screen that comes up allows me to upload my artwork. So I would click on this and upload my designs. So I just hit Upload, good hit over here to my computer and we saved it in here, and this is it here. And I click choose for upload. And you'll see, depending on your speed of your internet, it uploads actually quite quickly. You'll get a warning here if you didn't have a high enough resolution. And like I said, I never go below 300 dots per inch or pixels per inch when I do a document like this, this is a great way to double-check and make sure that you've got nothing being cut off and everything looks good and the space hit next. And you also get the option of being able to add text on the back. I've done this before. It's an extra charge that you could present to the client if they're interested. Like I said, for our intents and purposes here in this class, I'm not going to bother with that process. But if you wanted to, you could upload a whole new artwork and you could go either grayscale or full colour. Some people like a little message on the back, or if they aren't doing well, the smaller postcards, sized cards than the considered up exactly like a postcard. So I've done that in the past and it would hit Next here. You'll have to hit this button here to approve your design. Click on Next. If you don't have, I mean, you're going to going to have to put in your password once you've got that membership that I was talking about, and then you're presented with the different quantities in prices. So for 50 or a 100 price per is $0.28. I've never had anybody or to 250 Christmas carpets, but I do have occasionally people ordering a 100. And that's basically the whole process for ordering your cards. Once you hit Next here, you end up getting this kind of upsell screen that gives you some choices for other items. I've often had people actually order magnets at the same time. And of course, the layout isn't quite right for a magnet. I would definitely make adjustments here, set up the magnet completely separately, but really 400, let's say there were including them in what their Christmas cards, 749 is really not a bad price to pay it if you can do the up-selling and make that extra money than Y naught. So here you would hit next or go to cart, whichever your preference. You can also click on the cart anytime and be taken right to which I would remove that. And there you go. You've got your first-order and let's put it back down to 50. Your prices quite reasonable here. You can mark it up easily, 20 or $30, whatever you'd like based on the amount of time that you spend and the amount of proofs and that sort of thing that you sent to the client and you're done. So that's a really quick and easy way to do these wonderful customized postcards for Christmas. In the next lesson, I'm just going to really quickly show you some different ideas for layout in case you have a customer that would prefer a folded card. Okay, I'll see you in the next lesson. 6. Lesson 5 Alternate Layouts and Products: Hi guys, welcome to lesson five. I just want to show you in this unit an alternate to the flat postcard. This is a folded card. I'm going to show you an insider trick that's going to show you how to get more for your money. I want to show you how to deal with ordering magnets and return address labels. And I'm going to show you the layout for the back of the postcard if you need it. Let's get started. You may occasionally have clients who would prefer to have a folded card rather than flat postcard. If you go to the vista print site and you look up all the cards, notecards. Let's try note cards. You'll see that the price per, On a folded card is a lot more. So for example, ten cards, 623. So if you were gonna go to either 50 or a 100, that's common. You can see that the price is a lot more here. So what we have done is we have produced cards using that same size of layout as what we were working on before. What I've done here is I've added some guidelines and let me just turn off a couple of these things here. And you can see that the guidelines show all of the bleed marks. Fold line, center fold line, and then just Center marks to help you position some of your items. I'm going to be providing this layout so you can just download it and use it as is. I'll get rid of all this extra junk before a do fact. Let's just do that now. And what you'll get is a card with just the one background that we've been working with today out. A couple of the other things that you'll see on here are some guidelines. This one is for creating a return address label. We'll talk a little bit more about that in a minute. And then this one is for a business card sized magnet. I've got it here shown vertically, but you can also rotate it and create a landscape layout. So I'm going to keep these templates on the document for you. I'll put them in a folder labeled templates, and we'll talk a little bit more about those products at the end of the lesson. So here what I would do is to simply import the picture is exactly the same way as we did on the other card. So just to make things a little bit faster, I'm going to grab some of those pictures. We won't take them all. It's just try the two on the right and the family picture. So I'm going to drag the family picture into this group, and then I'm going to drag the whole group. You can see I've grabbed the folder and I'm going to take it. And which one was it? This one, let us know. So you see that that is highlighted at the top. And then I'm going to let go and my pictures will be now imported into this document. You probably won't have that process. You'll be starting from scratch, but you can just import the pictures exactly as you did last time. So I'm just going to quickly revise this. This is just for a quick demonstration for you because you know the process now you have done all of the steps previously. And what you're going to be doing here is looking at this front area only as you do your design work. So one of the nice things about having a group here is that when you do select it, you get that little center mark on the selection. The Transform controls that shows you that you have lined up. So it actually snapped to that location because I had snap Fonz here. See this? And that center point snapped right to the guideline I had there. So you can just go through and do all of your irregular design work. Let's just drag this other lettering in here. And all of the design considerations that we talked about before are still in place. So you would just do your design work, get everything looking great, and you'd be able to order it with nothing on this side or even just this background printed over on this side. And then you'll be able to score these for the customer and still be able to give them these cards at a really good price. Go through n, fix up things like this. Let's just grab this whole group and move it up a little bit. And you can always add texts in the back if they wanted something. And of course you can add on the inside as well. I wanted to also show you and I'll include this. This is a really good reverse side for the postcard. If people are going through and wanting the background printed as well, or the back of the card printed as well. You can put your logo here if that's something that you want to do to further your brand. Or you could definitely have that text in there. You know, they could have this on the back instead of on the front, and this could be up over here on the side. They could write a little note, address the card, throw a stamp on it, and they've caught that Christmas card done for this year. So lots of different ideas, lots of things to think about. How As far as the return address label, I would often suggest to the customer that they do a Christmas label with their name on it. And this is the proportion. This is really nice and large. So when you make it into Vista Print is a really good quality print. The label you save separately, so I would put that on a separate document. I'll send you a separate little template for that as well, and then save it flattened of course. And then when you go into to print, just search for return address label. And it's this set here. So there are a 140 is kind of a weird quantity to go with your cards, but most people didn't mind getting that extra 40. You could just explain to them that they only come in that configuration. Once you go to the start designing, it's exactly the same steps. It uploaded here from your computer and you upload the art simple as that. You see the area around the outside here, it's recommended that nothing be in that area. I always work in that very centre bit. And you can see the image resolution is represented. Okay, here, hit Next and choose your quantity and add to the cart. Now the other item that I was talking about was a business card sized magnet. So you can get 50 of them for 1371. I think the other one I was looking at there when we were being up sold was. A business card, you make your selections here, let's say a horizontal start designing and same process upload. And we could go to previous uploads. If we had uploaded all of those items at the same time, that might be a more efficient way of doing it. I don't have magnets setup here. Just remember that you would definitely need to change the proportion that Christmas card apportion doesn't work for the magnet. You'll have the magnet template here. You could select it and place it into your other document. Let's just rotate it 90 degrees, will take it outside of that folder, and then I would duplicate that folder. So Command J will duplicate it completely. Let's hide the original. Let's just take a look at the resizing of that. Actually, let's grab the I'm going to duplicate that would as well and throw that into the actual folder, pull it down to the bottom here, command t to transform. And you'll see what I mean about proportions. I'm holding down my shifted optionality. You'll see that when I get it to the proper width, the height will be not quite right. So let's just hide this. I. So you'll see, I'm going to turn off that other one. And we're going to reduce that down. Make sure you hold your shift key so that you are keeping the proportion correct. That you can change your preferences in Photoshop here about whether you want to have the legacy version of keeping the proportion correct, which would be holding down the Shift key or the new method where you don't hold the Shift key to have it stay proportionate. And when I hold down the option key, it resizes, it keeps it centered. So you can see that proportion, if I was to do the exact proportion of the postcard, doesn't quite work for the sheep of the magnet will then I can just grab, I pick, I'm going to enlarge the wood to fit. Now if I hold down my shift key, I can have it fit and the wood is very forgiving. It allows you to distort it a little bit without it being a problem. Now I've got this inner line here that is just basically a suggestion for where you keep your main elements. I think what I would do in this particular case is shift those pictures down to be sure that I don't cut off any of the top of the head here. I think we'll be okay. I'm gonna put another guideline in there for you so that you've got a better idea of the bleed that will be cut off. An eighth of an inch will be cutoff. So three millimeters all the way around the outside that you have to ignore. But this'll work out well. And then of course you would save this out and import it. Generally, what I do is a completely separate document for the magnet. So I'll send you a PSD document that you can put the finished magnet onto so that you can export it separately because there's no point exporting it. Now with all of this around the outside, what you could do is save it out. Let's call this one the magnet. Save it out as a jpeg. Of course, you would hide all your guys before you do that. They will print, I've made that mistake before. So open up your magnets and you could select this area on the outside, selecting verse and then crop. And you'd have your magnet, the array size, all you'd have to do then you would go back to your magnet layout in the fingerprint interface, hit my computer, import it, and then go through the process as we did with the other two items. So I guess that pretty much wraps up this lesson. I'll meet you in the last one where we're going to just talk about a few other ideas I have for you. And yeah, that'll probably be our final wrap-up. I'll see you there. 7. Lesson 6 Insider Tips and Conclusion: Hi guys, welcome to lesson six. So you've done it. You've got to finish card. Now I want to show you a couple of things before we go. I want to show you how to get a sampler kit. Will do that real quick. And then I'll come back and we'll think of I was showing you pretty much the whole process that I go through when I'm designing cards both for customers and for myself. Make sure you take a look at my other classes that talk about this. You can get some other pointers. And then one of the other things I wanted to tell you about was that on the pistol print site here you can order samples. So once you're in the site, just type in samples. And this is the kid I'm talking about. It is free, so that's Yea. It includes the business cards, postcards, brochures, stickers, suppliers. It's in a nice presentation folder. So it is very useful if you are dealing directly with your customers, if you're in-person dealing with your customers. I've also in the past in order to different items with different stocks just so that I have them there for comparison. And of course, the better quality you go for is the better finished look that you get. So that's something to keep in mind. I want to wish you good luck with this because it is a way that I made a few $100 November is user the month that everyone thinks about creating custom holiday cards. So if you get out there early, maybe started advertising at the end of October, you'll find that year after year, the same people will order from you. So that's a really nice thing as well.
