1. Introduction Part 2: I'm Kathy, your teacher. Welcome to part two of Illustrated watercolor map in part one. I walked you through my process of making a map. I showed you how I use procreate ap an apple pencil to create a beautiful, realistic watercolor map. I showed you a couple of different techniques I use for making icons. So hopefully you've taken the time in between Part one and Part 22 Draw some icons of your own because in part two will place those icons and will also draw our roads. Then I'm gonna be showing you some of my tricks on adding text and also taking it all the way to print where you maintain that beautiful watercolor Look at the end of the class, you will know how to create a map that you will be proud to include in your special event, invitation or even frame as a picture on the wall 2. Class Project : your class project will be to complete and upload a watercolor map. You can recreate my would be at map, or you can create a map of your own, especially if you're creating for your own wedding or a friend's wedding or a reunion to the park to class. I've added a couple of brushes, a stamp and a texture brush. Be sure and try out the texture brush or the PNG texture. So let's get going. We have some roads to draw look. 3. Roads: in this lesson. We're going to bring in the Google map, draw our streets and freeway, will be referring back to our brainstorming list for icons and make sure that we have everything that we need to make this a complete map. As you can see, I've brought in the map and it includes the land, the shoreline and the background water. And what we're going to do now is go ahead and bring in the photo of the Google map. But see how it's really hard, at least in this particular map. Maybe you'll have the same situation. It's really hard to see the the lines for the roads. So what I'm gonna dio is go ahead and make a duplicate of that and then I'm going to go. This is a lock on it. Unlock it. So what I'm going to do is go into the adjustments and go to curves. And in composite, I'm going to bring this all the way over. This is the shadows, until I feel like it's dark enough. I don't want it to get to dark but dark like that. Let's see what this does that brightens it up a little bit Yeah, that's good to go. Let's go ahead and bring it down. That like that? That's much easier to see. Let me show you a comparison. See, I'm going to create another layer. And in my Map Island palette, I have this kind of golden color, and I'm going to make sure my monoline brushes on and I have my size down to 4%. Okay, I'm gonna drop. Make sure that this is dropped down to about 50%. And on my new layer, let's call it freeway. I'll move this up so you can see it. And I know that this map fits perfectly. So I'm just going to draught loosely. Not too worried about getting a totally exact. There we go. That's our first road. All right. I've set up my layers to be roads vertical for the roads that are going up and down and then horizontal for those going this way. And then my highway I named this one my highway. And let's see. See, I have quite a few roads. I'm just going to draw the main ones. That will be important to the guests for the wedding. Okay, I've dropped down my map to 20 around 25. So it's real light. I'm on white and I'm on my monoline and vertical roads is the name of the layer I'm on. So let's go ahead and draw vertical. Okay, In this case, what I'm gonna do because I'm kind of wobbly is go ahead and draw it and use my assist with my finger and go straight. Actually, probably won't need to do my finger. Just hold it and then lift up. There was a little crooked the road, so I decided to do it that way. Okay, verticals. - So anyway, what I will do now is switch over to my horizontal and draw a few of those and then I'll meet you back here. It may end up being that some of these I get rid of, but at least they're on different layers. I've gotten all the roads and here's the freeway or highway is what I've decided to call it and the vertical roads and the horizontal roads. And I'm sure about thes now as being the ones that we need, because I've gone to my list of icons for the venues and for the different cities and thes air the main ones. I added just a few little lines or roads that are in this map, but I didn't want to junk it up with all these other extra. So now we're ready to go ahead and place our text for the names of the towns and for the roads streets and then also the waterways. Meet me in the next lesson. 4. Text Towns & Roads: Hopefully you've gotten everything done. And what I've done here is collapsed down the ocean. Like I said I was going to and I named it Ocean Composites. So it's the ocean and the shoreline, and my painting and drawing of the land is all on one layer also. So let's go ahead and rename that land. Since we've gotten all that done and we don't want to lose that, we want to go ahead and copy it. So let's go back into the gallery. And I'm sure you know how to do this. You do a select and you ignore this one because it's not that one. And then you, um, duplicated right here. Okay, so this is the copy. Ignore this one. And so what you want to do is go ahead and do you select that one and you want to go into your duplicate and you want to call it duplicate final map. And that will just be your safeguard. And what I like to dio is just go ahead and get rid of this so I don't have to duplicates. What I like to dio is like to call it duplicate of that. But then I like to go back into the original toe work on. And then also what I've done is I've placed some icons, the main ones, which is the main venue and the main city of Langley. Then, to make it really convenient, I created a separate layer and in red. I just sketched out what I thought I would be putting on their asses faras icons to come and then also the road names. And then I took that layer and reduced it down. And I use that just kind of for a while as my base for knowing where I would be putting my road names and my city's things like that. I love fonts, so I import my custom fonts using an app called Any Thought. See, the resource is page for a YouTube on how to use any font. Okay, let's jump in and use Cafritz Normal, and we'll go ahead and do the text for the towns and then usually, once I have something like a city already done, I'll just duplicate it. And as long as I'm always duplicating from that Langley, that's my original. The quality is gonna be good, so let's go ahead and do it, and we could just change that. Select all its highlighted. I don't know if you could see it and then bring this in and we could go. Clinton. I try and do all of my cities at once, and I'll be moving Clinton around depending on where I put the ferry. But for now, let's just put it right. Well, let's put it up here like that, Okay? And then let me go ahead and just start typing out the other ones using that same process. And I'm each back your when I get them all done. So let's go ahead and bring an text and I'm on that group or right above it and just hit the ranch. Add text and I've decided for the roads I'll use noteworthy. It's a great little thought. Let's go ahead and type out the first, which would be Bayview, and this is caps and lower case for this particular fund. So I like that Bayview, I think it's road. Let me refer to my list. Okay, be Bayview Road and let's go ahead and drop it down to around there. Okay, lets take it down in size a little bit down to say 50 groups. This kind of touchy isn't be good with that. So we're done. Except for we need to make it fit on that particular road. Okay, I like it. Except for one thing. Let's go back into the text and let's go ahead and do tracking. So watch the spacing in between the letters, but I am gonna be putting Brooks Road over here, so I have to be aware of that. Okay, so that's good for that part of it. And here we go. Let's go ahead and move some of the letters, so we're going to make sure we're on the layer and we're going to choose Freehand and we're going to circle. See, Let's go ahead. And I had a first move it up a little bit, so we get the curve right. I'll put most of them this view part, sort of level with this, and then we're gonna move it down. But that will give us a kind of our baseline. The white road. Let's bring in a big Okay, so let's go ahead and circle the B and bring it down and give it just a little bit of it. - Okay , we'll create another text and we'll call it Brooks Hill Road and summits add text and let's go ahead and give it a little bit of tracking, so it's easier to read. Actually, it will be easier. Also, given quite a bit. The more I give it tracking space between the letters, the easier it's going to be for me to move it around, and this is pretty wiggly. So I know I'm gonna be moving it around a lot, and it's important to go ahead and make sure that your cities are our towns. The text is already on because that's going to take up room. So let's go ahead and turn in this direction, and I think I'm gonna have to go underneath that simply because, yeah, see, it's gonna be real tight. I may have to go down in size on the B Bayview Road, so let's go ahead and do that. These air sort of the main roads, and this will be a road that will determine the size of the other ones. And I think what I'm gonna be doing because I'm having since its rast arised Teoh, let's go ahead and do it this way, since I'm having to use my tool here instead of actually using my text tool. Actually, keeping track of the size is sort of not that important, because I'm going to go ahead and establish my size right now with these two. And when I could Dio is just match up this size Moved this one over. See, the B is a little bit too big. So let's go ahead and move it down in size like that. That looks very similar. Yeah, see the road the are it will fit in here nicely And that choices about sure that I look at it before I start making rapid You watching me do it and I'm gonna runs Infinity tax in here video that I made with And there's no talk. 11.5 years time. I'm ever going on in the context of a pretty space, so only because gently squeeze it an app that I want to learn more about and work on, especially the text, that learning how to do the text. So I'll run that and I'll meet back here when I'm done. No way. - One thing that I noticed is what makes the quality, go down the most and say Look at the difference between this road rd and this RD, especially the are. And as I manipulated it with them with the tools up here, what I found made the most difference is when I would take and do this, watch this, select it and then see the quality. You saw the quality before, but when I used this turn tool is when it makes the biggest difference. So that's let's do something radical like that. See the different Senate. Can you see that? That's a big difference from what it was before. So I think what it does when we turn it. It changes those pixels because it's rast arised to begin with. So let's go ahead. And but let's go ahead. Just use our two fingers and go back with it. See, the big difference like that compared toa that big difference. So I'm not real happy with that, actually, probably what I would do at this point, I'd recommend using a tool either Photoshopped, which I'm not crazy about using anymore. But I have elements using the text tool path tool or something like affinity. If you want real high quality, one of the two of them. If you're going to be moving it around and like this. Now, if you're we're talking about straight type, I think procreate does a fine job. The other thing we could do is we could create a another layer. Okay, here we go. That's not coming there. Check this way down. Okay? And then move this layer above that Bayview. Let's go to anchors. Something like smooth, as better or built toe last, which gives a little bit of a rough edge way down. Yeah, there we go. And let's see how that looks. Let's take that loss now like that. So if you have to do a lot of twisting and stuff, you can always just go back through, and you could probably just do a few of them to improve them, Um, and do your more straight text by using the procreate. But I think I'll go ahead and go over this 12 and then just start working on my straighter type and just touch up. So I'll meet you back here after I get all of these drawn and we'll start placing our icons . Here's okay. What I've done is here's the original procreate bench type that's a little bit blurry, and I went ahead and traced it, and this is what it looks like. Let's go ahead and turn this off and this is the hand traced and let's go ahead and do a duplicate to darken it. And another thing we could do. You see the difference is we could take and combine those two and then we could go up into adjustments and sharpen, and that gets it a little bit sharper. That's what it seems like. A lot of steps. It would be easier. Just Teoh do a type path. I agree. But this does give the handmade look to it, which I really like. I have I'm showing you right now the Useless Bay and the Puget Sound that I had created in affinity. It lacks the handmade quality for the water color map. So I went ahead and brought in the type that I did in Photoshopped elements on the type path. Okay, this video is getting a little bit long in the tooth. Let's go ahead and have some more fun with text in a more artful way, will go to the next video, and we'll put the banner on and text inside that and at the bottom, and then the rest will be just filling in with the icons that we've drawn. 5. Icon Placement & Info Text: What I need to do now is go ahead and try and get my layers as compressed us possible. And I do want to leave myself room for changes. So I went ahead and made another copy of this justice a safeguard before I collapse it further because my plan is to go ahead and collapse the ocean, which is now a composite I named at Water. We're gonna move that composite up and I'm going to get rid of that layer. There's one layer because I didn't need it. And I don't really need this ocean base either, So let's get rid of it. We'll keep the background, of course, and then I'm gonna take a big leap of faith. Since I went ahead and copied everything, I'm going to go ahead and bring this and this down onto the layer for land because it's just brush marks that I did to darken the area around the venue. So let's go ahead and let's just compress it there. When you have that open like that, it doesn't do it. And because I'm sure at this point this is my land doesn't have any roads on it. Um, see, all my roads are on a different layer. This is all the other stuff. So let's go ahead and merge this down. I'm not too worried about it, because I have my file. Debbie, I map. Okay, that's the land and the ocean. Okay. And then another area that I have a lot of layers that I can compress is the streets and the towns. So I'm going to go ahead and compress all those and all rename it a composite of whatever it is. I'm going to continue to do that, and it eliminates layers. And also, it gives me a chance to see what I have. Trees are so important to the Northwest, so I wanted to make sure that I included plenty of them. So I drew a few, and then I just manipulated them with my move. Tool flipping, Um, and maybe doing some slight changes using the select tool, and, um, making them smaller. Bigger, that type of thing. I ended up with quite a few layers of a variety from just a few drawings. Okay, I'm fine with where they're at, so I'm gonna collapse it and call it tree composite. I eliminated a lot of layers as I go through the layers. I'm also eliminating layers are of artwork that I didn't use. So here's the tent. And here's one I didn't use, so I'm getting rid of that. Okay. Next, I'm gonna be drawing the pathway on the ferry that most guests are going to be taking, and I use my brush that I've included in this class and then I'm just gonna speed up the video and let it run, and you'll see me just adding the different layers of icons. - Yeah , I know. What I forgot to Dio was Add my highway or freeway. I think it's highway 5 25 So let's go ahead and do that. And we want to put that above the road. So let's go ahead and create a layer. I'm doing it in black and I'm gonna go to my stamps and I'm gonna use this one. We have it on here and see how you can see the There's transparency under there. I did that on purpose so that you could change it if you want as faras the color. Let's go ahead and create a layer, and it's the new layer is underneath that which we want it to be. And let's go ahead and just take a a brash, like monoline. Make sure it's fat enough and we're just gonna go like that. Now, you may want to do read or something like that or even change the color up in here on its I've tested these out there really easy to Dio, so let's go ahead and keeping that on top of it. We want to merge that down, Herget down, and now we're gonna resize it. We don't want to go too low and then stop and then make it bigger you to get fuzzy. So we want to make it low and make our changes, and that way we'll stay sharp. So uniform magnetic gonna be somewhere in here like thes street and highway signs have traveled enough that I like him big. I like him close to the area where the people are gonna be coming in and getting onto the highway from Clinton. So let's go ahead and do that. Maybe a tiny bit smaller there. Perfect. Okay, duplicate it and then we're going to carry that over here. We want to make sure that we don't turn it because if we turn it, it will get that line all messed up. Messes it up. Let's just put it in here. And the reason I like Teoh keep it over near free Linda's. A lot of the people will be staying in this area or traveling. The island comes back around this way. They'll be traveling from other areas. I can't even think of the cities, but, um, so I want to keep it there. So this is a very clear map, and it has all the necessary roads on it to get around for shopping for saloons, wineries, um, the venues or for places to stay your hotels. So we are done with that part. Now, let's do a real quick banner and I'm going to This is what it's gonna look like. Like that. And what I'm gonna dio is go ahead and I'll show you how I'm doing. It is great. What I'm gonna do is create a layer and go into the stamps, and I drew you a really nice banner, and it's not perfect because I wanted it not to have the perfect curve by holding my finger down one finger and So let's go ahead and go into, I think, probably is this No, it's this color. Okay, Head, remember, we want to make it big because we're going to reduce it. We're on the layer. There you go. Okay. So what, we're gonna dio I like it to be fat here before you do that. As you could see, I want it to be fatter. So let's go ahead and go to the creamy color. And we're just going to drop. And we're on that layer and that beautiful and them we're going to go back to that darker color, which is this one, and we're gonna fill the back part, which is the shadow with that. Okay? And that's all on one layer. And so we should be able to Let's go ahead and get our size first. We're gonna turn this off, so I'm not cheating. I feel like I'm cheating you. Caymus, Bring that up here on a state on the map and we're not gonna be doing uniform will be doing freeform. Just bring it damn like that. And then we're going to be probably uniform. See what it does to the off at it is we just want to say South would be, and I want it fairly large. So I wanted to be deep, is what I mean, So we go like that. Let's see how close it came to that. Yeah, Sort of. Um I like it. So I'm not gonna change it. And I'm not going to try and match up things. No matchy matchy. This is really Yeah, that looks good. Might drop it down. Just a hair in size, like that kind of squish. They're my family. This point isn't the same as that point as faras height. See, this one's higher, and that's good, because this is hand drawn. Okay, Perfect. Okay, now, when I back off, you could really see it needs to be moved up a little bits to scrunching in here. And then that needs to be changed us for a size. So let's go ahead, and I'm gonna go ahead, emerged that down. So we have just one and gonna move it up a little bit, okay? You always want to when you're doing something with art, look at the negative area instead of so much the art. It gives you more balance when you consider the negative area in relation to what you have on there. Okay, we're almost done. Let's add the information for the event. And then also, I like to add wedding map in the corner at the bottom. I'm using a our Bonnie again for the words wedding map. I love that type style. - The important part would be tailor, it would be the names of the Brighton groom. So it's gonna didn't do that. And then let's to date, I don't know if I really have any favorite text, so let's just stay on that text. I'm I know I'm not gonna use it, but, um, it will be small and let's go ahead and go. Let's go, August. I don't know, 15th or 17th or something like that. 17th 17. Let's go instead of 2019. That's good. 2021. That's a year from now. Maybe the pandemic will be over. Hopefully okay. Knowing that that is way too big. I'm OK with that because I'm gonna change first. The type font unlike that. But notice how thin it is. Wonder. Yeah. There you go. There's a good one. You always want to look at how the letters, the numbers look, not the letters, but the numbers Ruthanne, although it's kind of like a lot of mess in there with the Why so something less foofie. I like that. Rebecca. Let's just go ahead and go with that, mainly because it's getting close to lunch and I'm hungry. OK, so that's bring lips. I didn't mean to do that. Let's go ahead and highlight it and let's make it a little bit smaller so that there's some air and then let's bring it down so you could read it. Okay, see how this is real close to that? The bottom, the D sender. Why is close to that cap? A. Let's go ahead and give a little bit more space, and the way I'm going to do that is I'm going to drop down. Doesn't have to be a whole lot wedding, and then I'm gonna drop down the date. Wanted to stay close enough or centered, um, with the name because I don't want it to become part of wedding map, and I like I. This is personal taste. I like plenty of letting, just like I like tracking. I think that's really easy to read, Let's go ahead and group thes here. Let's like to move it in the order that it iss and will hit this and group group. And the reason I did that is because I'm gonna move it, and it's easier to move as a unit. I was too smashed in two to Max Welton, and I want to look at it in relationship to this wave. I kind of like that. It sort of acts is an ornament that works with this. So I call that done. Okay, boy, I tell you, that's the whole map. I'm still looking at this is being a little bit large. This this is something that you have to learn, especially if you're selling something. If you're marketing your maps, you can't be this picky. You have to let the client be the picky one. There we go. But see, it gives it a little bit more space are right. Turn it around this way so we could make it really big and show you how gorgeous is this? This is really a nice looking map. And remember, before I collapsed it, what I did off cameras with I looked at a couple of different backgrounds for the ocean because I think the ocean the ocean. Of course, all that painted parts are what make it look water coloring. But the ocean is what kind of seals the deal. It's just really pretty. And I do like how artwork is just kind of painted, not so much edged, having that thinking around it when it's in the water. I think the inking part helps it sometimes to stand out from from the background. But see, like none of these have that edging so but that looks kind of quirky and stuff. What you What I could have done was I could have had my layer. Um, you know, the outline layer and chosen it as a reference, created a layer underneath it and then painted with the brush one of the brushes in gray and then gotten rid of the reference, and that would have given it more of a brush. Look like this. So just a little tip, you know, experiment just to me and the story behind this is my sister in law's boyfriend has a boat , and it looks just like this boat, and it's called Tortuga, which is turtle in Hawaiian. So, um, I when hadn't called it that Because they have a anchored up here in a marina in that Camano Island, icons are easy to make personal. Here. I've changed the Volkswagen to be the color of my own Volkswagen Yellow Join me in the next lesson and will be talking about printing and how to keep this map looking like a water color look. 6. Print & Texture Brush: and I'm finished with a map before a flatten it. I always save it with all the layers as a photo shop file. Then I save the flattened version as a J peg and also a Pdf, because depending on where you go and how you print it, you don't know which one is going to be required. My process for printing maps is pretty simple. I either use my home printer, which is a cannon and also an Epson, and since I set up my maps as RGB, I could even go to a copy center. I prefer going to the copy center to doing it at home because I could use a laser printer instead of an ink jet, and it gives me a sharper edge to the brushes and a clearer color. It's easy to make comparisons. I do that by printing a test of my map color palette. Be sure to run a test with and without the water color, texture brush, he felt watercolor. Look choose a matte finish paper, and when the color of the paper is a choice, I always go with the brightest white that comes in the texture and the weight of the paper that I choose when I can. I just go ahead and print riel watercolor paper by running it through my home printer. It's a little bit more expensive, but I can trim it to size myself and sometimes even get two per page to get your map ready . To view online, just add a texture and a border, and it's ready to upload. Well, that's the end of making our map. Now, if you aren't sure about how to add a texture brush or a PNG texture to your map, just continue to watch this video, and I'll show you my method. Create a new layer near or at the top of all your other layers and call it watercolor brush texture. I've included a brush for you to upload in. The resource is here's the hex number of the gray that I use, and here's the brush watercolor 50. That's the green size. I move the size of the brush and opacity to the very largest, and then I make my map small enough where I can see the whole thing and I take the brush. It's a big circle, and I just rub it over it. Don't lift up your pencil now. Duplicate that layer and go back to the first layer and go to screen and bring the opacity down to 30. Next, you'll be going back up to the second layer of the brush texture, and you're gonna be moving that to 60 and put it at multiply. I also really like linear burn. It gives the map a realistic watercolor look, I love it. And if you look, if you want to look at the very top on the banner, you could really see the texture. Now let's go ahead and group those two. Don't merge them together, just group them here. I am turning it off and on so you could see the color change. It's just very gradual, but I think it's worth it with having that texture. The last thing I like to do is put it in an order that works for the map and see the bottom where it says Taylor and Bryce. If you move that layer up above the texture, it makes it brighter, and I think that's important because that's a major part of the information that you want to see. See here it is back down. It kind of gray's it out. So I'm gonna put mine up on top now, my clouds that I've added there above the texture I'm gonna go ahead and move them down under because I think they look better with having the texture on them. Since I've merged down all of my text for the roads and island names and things, I have a choice now to as to whether or not I want it to be more visible by putting it above the texture or not. Now just go ahead and name that brush group brush, texture. And then I'm showing you how I used the PNG. I just brought it in as ad photo, and then I used the blend modes the same way, except for for the top layer I used instead of multiply the linear burn and you could see it's a little bit darker in this picture. Well, that's a wrap. So meet me in the next video and I'll give you my final thoughts 7. Final Thoughts : well, our classes come to an end and gosh, I just really enjoy this class. I don't know if it's just because we're in this stay at home mode and working on a map kind of took me back to this'll particular wedding, which I think was probably my husband and myself last big trip that we took. So anyway, it's kind of like reliving that and that really what you end up with when you make these maps, you end up with memories on paper or digital if you don't print it. But also, if you include it in an invitation, like a wedding invitation with the map, it gets your guests all excited about where they're going and doesn't have to be a wedding . It could be a family re union and just kind of unites everybody as to their plans. And, um, is a beautiful way to remember a particular event. This this is called skill share. So by uploading your map, but that you've created, especially if it's your 1st 1 you're sharing your skill in your honing your skill. So please do that.
