A wedding, family reunion or get-together or want to commemorate a trip? Crank up the enthusiasm of guests by including an illustrated watercolor map to your invitation or event website. A beautiful illustrated map allows you to convey to guests what you have planned for them and clearly sets the party VIBE.

This class will walk you through my process; plan, paint to print, so you, too, can create a beautiful Illustrated Watercolor Map to use, gift or sell. I use an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil in the class lessons, however, you can easily adapt my process using a Wacom tablet/stylus and Photoshop. Student should have intermediate knowledge of Procreate in order to get the most from this class.

Instruction is broken into 2 Classes, to allow students to follow along and have time to create and experiment with digital brushes & techniques creating icons. You will learn how I create a realistic watercolor effect using Procreate’s native paint brushes. As a bonus I include my set of map icon stamps to get you going, and a download of the native Procreate brushes, my Google map and map color pallet to use if you wish to follow along in the lessons.
By the end of this class you will feel confident to create your own fabulous Illustrated Watercolor Map for your event or you can market your map skills. Either way, I bet you will be surprised how easy it is.

After retiring from an alternative career, I returned to graphics via digital photography. 1. Introduction : okay, I thought that a good place to shoot this would be in my Zen garden, my husband's garden actually with his bonsai, because it's going to be very hot today, in fact, all week. And so I thought I’d better get this shot, I wanted to get a hair appointment. But, you know, in this pandemic, it's kind of hard. So anyway, I'm just going for it... Welcome to my class. My name's Kathy and I'm your teacher for this Digital Watercolor Map Class. What I love about an illustrated map, especially inserted into a an invitation for family re-union or a wedding, is that it gets the guests all excited and familiar with the area that they're going to be visiting. I'm going to walk you through my process of doing a Whidbey Island, up in Washington a beautiful area near the Puget Sound or on the Puget Sound. And, uh, I'm going to show you how to use the native brushes all in Procreate, no extra costs. They come with the program, one of the most important things on a map is the Icons I'm going to be walking through how I draw my icons. I do icons many different ways can go back to my technique and my Phoodle class, and I'll take photographs and trace over them and then water color. And that technique helps me create icons that look realistic to water color. But also you could tell what they are because I'm not that great of an artist, especially a watercolor artist. But this is a pretty simple, straightforward technique that I use. Also, I have included in the class some stamps because what I've learned is, once I create something, Like a line drawing that's an icon. I'm probably going to use it in one of my future maps so I don't have to “recreate it again” I just go in, grab the stamp and use it. So I include that for you, and please feel free to use them And if you do make maps to sell or to give, you have my blessing to use my stamps. This class will jam-pack your toolbox so that you, on your first try, can create a beautiful illustrated watercolor map. So join me in the next video and we'll talk about what your class project’s going to be 2. Class Project : your class project will be to complete and upload a watercolor map. You can recreate my Whidbey Island map, or you can create a map of your own, especially if you're creating for your own wedding or a friend's wedding or a reunion. Be sure to download the map palette and the brush set and experiment with those brushes, see what you can come up with when you create your own background, ocean or background land. Experiment with the different blend modes and create maybe two different versions of the same painting. Remember to download the stamp set, and also you can create your own stamps of your own drawings. I can't wait to see your icons and what techniques you use. One of the things I did at the end was to go ahead and break this class into 2 Parts so that you'll have more time to work on those icons. 3. Organization : Let's go into the folder that I created on my iPad to store all of the stuff that I need or that I need for inspiration for my map that I'm working on today and it's called “Whidbey Island” or “Map” would be a good way to put it. If you have other maps like me, you see, I just have all kinds of map ideas. This one actually is, Ah, Google map. And that's what we're going to use because it's the simplest map with the roads already on it. And then I have my little icon inspirations and ideas for what I might want to put on referring back to my brainstorming list. Remember that? Let's go ahead and go back in here. And one of the things that we're going to be doing is creating a watercolor background similar to this or you can purchase one. For instance, here's one that I purchased online, and it normally is black, it’s a Mask for photos. Sometimes they're called Stamp, and you normally see them as black, and you just take it and put it above the layer of your photograph and then you clip it to it and it gives you a real nice watercolor wash and takes away the edges of the photo. I love how this has this edging. And so that's a great inspiration to keep in my folder. And I know that eventually I'm going to steal this little idea because I think that's beautiful. And then you can get ideas from online looking at how they've done things. I'm taking this idea and will be creating this shoreline Gradiation. I like this in that it has. Ah, realistic watercolor. It probably is a real watercolor, done with water color and ink. And then I have my ideas for the compass in here, which you could purchase. This is my favorite one, and I think, I actually did purchase this. But I'm afraid to use it unless I know for sure. So I need to go back into my records and see., but instead, what we'll be doing is doing something. A combination drawing of that and this one. For the icons for lighthouse idea and ropes. I have this. And anyway, I have a lot of different ideas that I've just stuffed in here, as well as link to this Pdf which gives the actual sizes of common stock stationary. Okay, so let's go ahead and go back into one more thing. One of the native brushes is, I don't know if it's, called splatter or water spot. It's in the Spray can folder of the native Brushes of Procreate, and I like to use this on my maps. He just gives it just at a depth, more convincing once it's printed up like you actually water colored it. So let's go ahead and create our background ocean. 4. Brainstorm: you okay, As faras preparation for doing a map, I've kind of distilled it down to eight basic categories as faras putting features and icons onto your map and also considering the style of your map, which in this case, it's going to be water color. So I'm not gonna go over this. I'm gonna show you what I did with this. This is all with an procreate that I'm doing this. And then what I did was with them procreate. I used my eye pencil and I just rode out, scribbled out more details to those eight particular, um, features and icons. It was pretty easy. And I highlighted in yellow the most important of the icons. I wanted to draw them first, to give myself a check off list and to keep myself on task. I created a folder called Would Be Map Within Notes on my iPhone, Then referring back to those eight categories in the list of map features and icons, I wanted to make sure I covered. I broke each category down into more details. For instance, the ceremony venue was a barn, and I wanted to make sure I had rings. That type of thing so you could look at thes more in detail stints. The after party venue was at a whiskey bar and I gave myself a note within that to check the online website so that I could find out where it waas and more details about it, that type of thing and it just really kept me on task. So I would recommend doing something like this, whether you do it on paper or you do it within a device. For me, this is an important step because it got me drawing early and also it kept me drawing. So I was consistent. So by the time I needed the icons, they were already because I started so early, drawing my icons, I was able to redraw see this primitive version of the main venue and it turns out so much better the second time 5. Icon Stamps: It can't be said in procreate enough that artwork SIZE makes a big difference because you always want it to be larger or the same size as what you're going to be putting it in the document. You can reduce it, but you can not enlarge it without it becoming blurry. I'll show you what I mean, because I made this mistake all the time. I'm gonna go ahead and create a document. I'll do it one inch by one inch and 300 dpi . That's important. The reason that I chose one inch by one inch is because I'm going to draw this little drawing and it's gonna be a PNG, and I know when I bring it into the document, I will use it no bigger than this size original size or I will reduce it now. If I were going to bring it in and have it larger than I would do it with a bigger canvas size. Okay, I'm going to remove the background and I'm going to save it under the wrench as a PNG to my photos and let's bring it in to the map, which is a large document, and I brought it in two times, both the same size one of them I'm going to enlarge and the other one I will reduce. Now let's compare the quality. Clearly, the enlarged one is blurry. So what a waste of time if you draw something. So let's go ahead and do a little bit of color drops on this now, and we could save it as a PNG and use it later. Or just use this layer in the map. Okay, now that we have that out of the way, let's go ahead and all show you how to use the stamps that I've provided as a download. The one that we're going to be using is the blueberry and will be doing it a couple of different ways as far as coloring. There's many different ways, but let's go ahead and tap once. Using the black ink choose are soft brush, which is a native brush. Now we could use also the water brush, and here's a sample of that, but we're gonna be using the airbrush. What I like about it is that it creates a nice soft edging. You could have the hard part off to the side and it won't show up because we're using clipping masks or else we're using Alpha Lock. So let's go ahead and create three different layers and those are going to pay for our colors of the Berries. Booth the stamp layer to above them in that stamp player, go to select that Select icon. Make sure you're in automatic at the bottom and click within. Your berry is going to change to blue because you have automatic on, hold it down and pull it to the right and see it. The top, the threshold. It's going up that fills the area. And so you do that into each of the areas that you want for the particular layer below. So we're in the foreground. So I do these two Berries and I move it up. And then you see this. This is what happens if you go to high. It goes all blue, so you just pull it back down. Okay, now, now go back into your layers and go into that layer below that layer for below the stamp, and it selected those two Berries and you change your color to blue, which is the color of the blueberry and you drop it onto that area, make sure when you drop it on that you don't drop it onto that little, um, fuzzy part because it will fill that in also. And then you repeat that. So you go back into the stamp layer into the ribbon, make sure you're on automatic, and we're doing the mid level right now, and we're holding down and bringing the threshold up. So I have three Berries in this layer. Here goes the other one, and I go back into the layers and I go down to that layer three and it selected it onto that layer. And then I'm going to drop. Okay, I'm going to drop too dark blue or that mid blue color. And then I'm gonna go ahead for that upper one. Berry, change my color to a little bit lighter because I wanted to be a little bit more interesting when I do the blend modes. Especially when I dropped the highlight shading onto it. So I'm not gonna drop. I'm gonna paint it. So let's go ahead and do that. Okay? Now we're gonna go back up to the stamp, and we're going to do that last berry , which is the background. But we're gonna change our color back to that dark blue. So when we get into the drop part, okay, now we go up to the stamp part the ribbon on automatic or select on automatic, and then we go back down to that layer and we're dropping onto it. So now we’re done with that part Turning off the stamp layer. You can see how the the blue is a little bit lighter and that will make a difference when we start using the different blend modes with the shading. So let's go ahead and duplicate that stamp layer, and that's just a safety precaution. Okay, now let's go ahead and choose mid tone green and on one of the stamp layers, I'm going to go ahead and do my select, and I'm gonna go ahead and select all of the leaves this time all at once, and then we'll put them on a layer one layer underneath. So let's go ahead and tap on each one. Each time I'm moving it up to the right for the threshold and checking it out as I'm going . There we go, Okay, and let's go ahead and create a layer and move it down underneath that layer, stamp layer that we selected. And then let's go ahead and take our green and we're going to drop it into each of the spots. I'm doing all the same color and all on the same layer. There we go. So let's go ahead and look at it this way. This is really pretty. If you wanted at this point to just take the the stamp layer off and, um, shaded in, it would be really pretty with the white showing through. But what we're going to do is let's go ahead and Alpha , Lock that layer of the green and let's using a darker color. We're going to create the shadows, and I'm using the airbrush again, making it fairly small. And I'm just going to do the underneath part. Remember, for the shadowing. My light source is coming from above, so it's gonna be underneath on each of the leaves. I'm varying the size also of the brush, so that I have some softer and some harder showing for the shadows. So anyway, just kind of play around with it, and you just want it to pop and next we'll be doing the highlights, Okay, and then let's go ahead and move it to move our color to a lighter color. And this is pretty bright. But I want it to show up on the map using the same airbrush, and I moved it down in size. Let's go ahead and do the upper part, remembering the light source coming from above, I'm just working our way around appear in the left, and what I'm doing is kind of paying attention to the curves and maybe the Benz of the leaves. It doesn't have to be totally realistic, but it should have a lot of contrast to show up on the map now. Remember, if you were using the watercolor brush, you would want to be on a different layer because you would want to do different blend modes. In fact, when we work on the blueberries will be working on different layers and blend modes, and so this is just a quick, easy way with the leaves to get it done, and it looks nice and you get your shading, but let's spend the most of our time in the blueberry part. Let's go ahead and turn off the Alfa lock on the green leaves and let's go ahead and go to layer for which is the foreground of the blueberries. And let's change to our color to a dark blue because we'll be doing a shadow. Okay? And then we're going to create new a new layer above each of the layers of blueberries. See that layer seven. Ignore that. That was something I tried and I should have gotten rid of it. Now we're going toe use our soft brush again, and we're gonna brush. Just this is on these two Berries that are the foreground Berries, and it looks like we're running off the edge. We aren't We're going to be making that layer into a clipping mask. See, It disappears. So every time that we're working above a berry group, um, it will be a clipping mask. It's a good thing just to go ahead and make a clipping mask before you start painting. So let's go ahead and do it again on this. We're still using that same dark blue, okay, remembering our light source. So we're keeping it the shadow towards the bottom, and it looks a little dull, But once we put the highlight, it will look a lot better above each of the berry groups and the shadows. We're gonna go ahead and create another layer for the highlights. We're gonna go ahead and put them all on clipping mask ahead of time because so much easier . And then let's go ahead and choose our color, which will be a light blue. Or you could use white if you want. Since we're using the blend modes, I'm able to create different colors because it interacts with the color underneath it. As I was talking, I did the foreground top berry. And now I'm going to be doing that bottom Berry. There it goes in the center. That looks really nice. Okay, continuing on to the lower right, creating some highlight and then the upper left berry and then down below at the bottom, creating a little bit of highlights so that it shows up better. And then I'm just gonna kind of add to where I think that needs to be added to to make him pop. Okay, let's go ahead and play around with the opacity and also the blend modes. You could see the different, especially with the highlight, the different colors you can bring out and it's just really fun. I really enjoy the screen mode most I think, and I think there's a color me see color burn. No, not color burn screen and color. Dodge. Yeah, Here we go. Yeah, in bringing that down just so that's pretty vivid light. I like that, too. That's soft. So I mean, years is gonna look totally different from this. So I'm not going to spend a lot of time. And don't waste your time trying to figure out how to duplicate it, because you'll just find the one That's the sweet spot for yourself. So here it is, Um, all done. Now we just have to turn off the background. It's a PNG, and let's go ahead and go to the ranch and share and save it as a PNG. It's exporting, and I'm saving it to my photo gallery. Okay, I'm gonna run another video that I did of a painterly way of doing my icon and just opinion on Would you prefer I did my stamp and then created another layer and did a thinner sketch using the sketch brush and then on a separate layer. From that, I did all of my painting. After experimenting with different brushes on procreate, I settled on the wash brush, which is native to procreate in the brush set called painting. I encourage you to try different brushes and find the one that you like best as faras your style. Um, I'm not even going to be using this painterly look for the blueberries. But of course, I used it for some of the other icons on the map. Yeah. 6. Icons: Here are some of my favorite ways to create icons for the Whidbey Island venue. This is the barn where the wedding took place. And so I got this from online and also the logo. And then I went online and found a similar shaped building, which is a horse stable, and I traced the bones of it making it into a barn and added some of the details of the actual barn. And here I use it my stamp, and I color it the same as I did in the last lesson with the blueberries. Be sure to include the most important icons to your event. This happens to be the lighthouse right next to the ferry that most people had to use to get to the island. It's those important venues and locations that I draw first, and it sure feels good to check them off my list on this one. I went ahead and just traced a ClipArt. I didn't sell the map, so I felt okay. I guess I would have to say after making this lesson, it's pretty clear. My favorite way to do these icons is to do a tracing and painting over photos. Saving your artwork as a PNG allows the map to show through it I wanted to make sure for my map that Langley had a picture or an icon that looked exactly the way it is because it's so cute. It's a Western town. So I went ahead and did another Phoodle and painted it, and I thought it turned out great. So try these different techniques of drawing. And also remember, you'll get better the more you practice, so get drawing early in the process and get him checked off your list. 7. How To...: I recommend on the first map you make to go ahead and take the artwork that you draw and make a brush out of it. A stamp brush. After all, you've drawn it and it's so easy to do create a 300 dpi 10” by 10” square and use black ink and draw. Now, here I am doing this and it's kind of wonky, and I know this is gonna be a brush, so I'm going to use it several times. So I'm gonna go ahead and go into drawing guide and assist, and I'll do symmetry and I'm gonna do vertical and look at the difference. Now, I'm not too worried about the roughness because this is going to be a hand drawn piece of art. Well, this is looking a little bit rough, but I'm gonna go ahead and go with it, and I'm gonna go ahead and use this to show you how I make a stamp, just the process. And then I'm going to show you how I could use this and make a sketch over it and more refined I could tell right away. This is too thick of a line going around it for my stamps, my style, because I do water color. So just go ahead and watch my process of drawing and then I’ll cut back in to tell you how I make the stamp to see how symmetrical it looks. I kind of don't like that. It doesn't look natural, especially for my style. Okay, after cleaning it up, I'm done with that. And let's go ahead and save it as a JPEG and we'll send it to photos, save it and photos. And then I'm going going to go ahead and go back into that document and create a new layer because I'm going to use that to test out the stamp that I'm about to make now to turn this into a brush, go into brushes. But choose a stamp brush, and I'm choosing this when I'm going to duplicate it, that's important. And then I'm gonna go into that little corner squiggle to open it up, and once it's open on the left hand side, watch, I'm going to go down to shape. Here's where the magic happens, Okay? Now, when you go into shape, it has shape source and edit at the top Do you see that in the middle? Hit that edit and then you're going to import that cake photo. Now, you see the picture of the cake and hit done at least once. I usually hit it twice in order to take. Now, I usually go down to About this brush, and I change the name because I don't want to be confused or have to go back to it. So I'm gonna change this to cake. I see by my picture that of the cake that it's a little bit small. So I go to properties and you could move it up in the minimum size. And that will make your illustration in your stamp set larger. And also, it will keep it from being itty bitty at 1%. And then you could test it out on that little drawing pad. And that's the size it's going to be as far as showing on my set. Okay, It's still a little bit large, so I'm gonna go back into properties, adjust it a little bit more in the minimum, and it should be just right. Okay. After you make a stamp, you always want to go into the document and go ahead and test it out at the largest and the smallest. And I usually do around 50% or 25%. And I could tell right away that it has way too thick of, ah border for my style. So, using the stamp, I'm goingto go ahead and reduce it and use it as a background and sketch on a separate layer. And this is creating a whole new brush. So just go ahead and watch it. I'm not gonna repeat everything. As far as what I've said, you could just see what I'm doing. - Okay ? My drawing is done, and I'm gonna go ahead and use this to make a stamp, so I'm going to save it. It's a Jpeg and followed that same routine. Okay, now I'm gonna go ahead and stamp my brush, and I'm gonna color it. I'm using pink as my border instead of black. This is an example of how I would use a stamp and go in and just bring it right on to my map. - Okay ? Because I'm going to use it on my map. I'm going to save it as a PNG to my photos and then I'll bring it right onto my map layer. Position it and I'll be good to go. Let's add a little bit of text. I think we'll call it Bridesmaids luncheon, and this is just fictitious. This wasn't part of my original map, but this is a real common icon to have on bridal maps. It looks a little bit faded, so I'm going to go ahead and duplicate it and see if that works. And I could see it doesn't. So I'm gonna go into adjustments up here and go down to saturation and brightness and maybe even Hues and play around with those and see if I could get something that pops a little bit. There's lots of things to make it pop. One is to go into the blend modes, and so I'm going in to multiply, and it makes a big difference. Okay, I'm gonna call this good, and I hope that you learned a lot from this If you didn't know how to make your own stamps out of your art 8. Map Setup : your map canvas set up is important. You should ask yourself two questions. Is my map going to be printed or is it only gonna have an online presence? And if printed, what's the size of the stock? Let's assume that your stock is 5”x 7”and you'll be doing it in portrait. And so you go to the plus sign and create a new canvas or else scroll down to. I happen to have one already in my list. Now, with the canvas open, you could go under the wrench and down to canvas information in under dimensions. You could see it's truly five by seven inches and the DPI is 300. I think the default might be on my iPad 132 so it's important for me to make sure that that says 300. You could check out statistics and the others in the list, but the dimensions is the one we're concerned about. Okay, back in the actions, let's go ahead and click on Add and Insert Photo of the Google map. Okay, it fits pretty good, but let's go ahead and make it fit a little bit better. by stretching it and nudging it over, we want it to be centered. And we also want it to be filling that blank area because that's our stock size. Using freeform again Stretch it a bit as long as it doesn't get too far out of shape. I'm fine with turning off and on the movement tools so I could see exactly what I should be doing. Then nudging it to get it just right. Okay, the map is layer one of my layers of my map and notice how I've locked it, especially if you're new to making maps. You want it locked because you're going to be tracing on top of it, and you wanted to stay in that position. Next lesson will be on water or the ocean, and it began on layer to 9. Water: In this lesson, we're going to build a water color background for the ocean. And what I'm going to show you is it in reverse? And then we're going to create a totally different one. No two are alike. And I created this for this map in the beginning. So let me go ahead and go into the way it was built. I've readjusted my cameras so you could see it as I take the layers off. So let's take the top layer off, which will be these white ones. And then we have this splatter I love this particular brush because it has that nice edge to it. Okay, let's create our own. And we’ll practice with some of the brushes, I'll show you what I've used. In order to create the background. Let's go ahead and create a new, a custom canvas. Or else I'm just gonna go ahead and use this screen size like that. Here's our color palette. Let's go ahead and start with this one. Now I'm not trying to recreate what we did. I'm just going to show you something that's similar to it. And then let's go into our water and pigments, body watercolor. Let's see what it looks like. Big, right? And then we want to bring it down a little bit. What I like to do on my map is wherever I have my banner which is going to go up in this area, I like to keep it a little bit darker, so I'm going to start out a little bit dark. Okay, let's go into our color palette and it's Choose the light turquoise. Let's see what wet sponge does. I'd like to start big. That's gonna be real big. Okay, the splattered it around a little bit. And then let's go and we have a new layer created. Let's pick out this color. In the artistic. Here's that fresco, a love that fairly big. See that edging. And then see this goes fast. Let's create another layer and choose light-blue. Oops. Let's go with this watercolor. That’s in the artistic. Whoops, well, I know what I'm just going to there. This is kind of a washy This is the one that you can create movement like that looks like a z. Okay, and let's go ahead and change the blend mode on that. Since it's so light, I know I wanna go into lighten and screen. So I'm thinking I might go ahead and erase off some of this on that particular side right here. And then go back in to that water color brush and create some movement. There we go. And let's, I'd like this right here. Create another layer. And what I'm gonna do is go in here. I don't like this grayish tone on my map. But let's see, let's do this one. See the difference. Keeps it a little bit brighter. And I think that's which one we did at the very beginning. We'll see a 100% there like that. And then go ahead and create another layer. Pick, I think this color turquoise, a dark turquoise. And let's go ahead and do those splatters. There we go. It's called Mad splashes. You control it over here. And they are big and not very controlled. And then skip ahead and let's go ahead and do a background of that blue because it really looked good. And the other one, so it see how light it is. What you could do to if you wanted kind of more of a washed look, then find a brush and wash it. So let's go ahead and do that first. Then I know I want to have it underneath a couple of things like that. Choose our color And it doesn't matter if you repeat colors because we can always change the color. In fact, we could change it here or we could change it with the Blend Modes. Let's go ahead and go up a little bit like that And let's find us a good brush. I think I found this brush the other day that looked really good. Well, like this cloud brush. I like big brushes. See how I'm just kind of painting along like that. Okay. See the splash. Not loving the white under it. We can always put a different color underneath that. But let's first do some. Actually let me first turn this sideways so you can see what I'm doing as I do it. For instance the big circle. Let's put it on, multiply, take it down just a little bit. Okay I think what will tie this all-together will be to put a background color on it. So we're at the bottom, almost at the bottom. So let's create a layer. And this is going to be a background, fills the whole thing. So let's choose a color that's kinda towards the gray tone. Again. Let's see. Select to fill. That totally changes everything. So now what we're going to have to do, should have done that probably first. Now, let's take that down to 50%, around 50 and revisit a few of these. Okay, that one especially, just want that to be barely showing up this splatter. Okay. Now this still looks to me a little bit flat and I'm not sure if I'm loving this right here. So what I'm thinking of doing with that is on uniform. Let's enlarge it. Take it down like that, and then I'm gonna put it underneath. I think that looks too fake. So let's go ahead and keep it on screen and bring it up like that. Ok. Now it just seems like it needs a little bit up, up. So I think I'm going to the top. And let's go in here. And let's go with the light-blue, real light blue. And let's give us some kind of action. Okay, let's try the cloud brush and let's see how it looks. Create a layer back on it. Like that. Who end up that? That turned out great. I especially like that texture right in there. So I'm gonna put a little bit over here. Okay? And then let's see what we could do with the changing of opacity. You'd bring it real low, starts to lose out since we're, it's a light color. Let's go into lighten mode and see what screen does. I like that. That's really pretty okay. I, I am feeling one more thing that the dark, which I see is this one. It's a 100%. Let's go ahead and see the difference between Multiply and normal. Normal multiply. I like this one even better. Linear Burn, Color Burn is a little faded. Okay, let's keep it right there. And I say, we're done. Let's go ahead and turn off one at a time. Ooh, I like that. You see, and what you can do is keep this file and you can even save it JPEG with different layers off and on. And it's just one less thing you have to do when you do another island or you need an ocean and could just bring them in. 10. Land Border & Color Drop: Okay, let's get started. This I considered to be the base of our whole map. So we bring in the Google map and it's to size. If it's not, make sure it is because it becomes the base of everything and we'll go ahead and reduce the opacity down so that we can trace the borders. And then we're gonna go ahead and create another layer, and we're gonna call that land, and this layer will contain all of this particular lesson, which would be the drawing of the black border and also the color drops. Okay, let's go into our colors and choose solid black and will use the monoline brush. And that would be the only brush that we're gonna use for the border, and we'll be doing it at 1%. Make a note of your percentages or the size of your brush when you're doing things like this, because you may have to go back in, especially on the roads, and match up, and you'll want him to be exactly the same. So I'm gonna go ahead and speed it up. Just stay loose with your drawing and make sure that if you start another place like this that it will connect. You don't want any breaks because you're doing a color drop. - Okay , let's go ahead and put your finger down and it makes a nice parallel line. Straight line. And what I did on that, which is a little unusual, is because we're doing a color drop. I had to enclose all of my land. So later on, I'll be erasing that particular dark line off and letting it flow because the rest of the island goes to the left. - Okay , again, putting one finger down. And that gives you a nice parallel line and just the last of the touch ups. Before you do your color, drop back it off and really look at it and even turn off the background Google map so that you can see it better. There you go. Okay, let's go ahead and choose our medium green. That's going to be the background color for our land and do a drop. And while we're in that color, let's just go ahead instead of the racing. Let's just pull up the monoline pan again and make it a little bit bigger. Well, yeah, there we go. So you could see, and let's go ahead, make the pen, beg the brush bigger and just paint over that line that border line. And then we'll go back into the monoline and bring it down to 1% and use black, and we're going to go ahead and fill in that blank area. This is where it bleeds. Okay, lets go back into our colors and choose tan. That's gonna be the color of the outer islands and using the same layer for land. We're just going to do a drop color drop, and I could already see that I do like the black border on the land. But I don't like that going around the tan makes it two prominent. So let's go ahead and go into that same layer. And let's Alpha Lock it by swiping with my fingers to the right. And then let's go into a little bit bigger brush to make it easier. And using the same tan we’ll just brush right over the island. Since it's Alpha locked, it just paints on the island area. That was fast. We're done with that part, so in the next lesson will be giving it the painterly look, using just four brushes and be sure to upload your map palette. Pdf to your photos because we'll be using the land colors. There's only five of them to paint with. See you in the next lesson. 11. Land Painting : Okay, What we're going to be doing is painting on the green and also the tan, and let's go ahead and pull up our map palette that I included the pdf for. And that's just for your convenience. If you want to use thes particular colors, you'll be not necessarily creating a map land palette you'll be creating like what I did right here. Um, having many, many layers and using all different colors, you'll be creating a palette that has a lot more than just for look at the second box where I call it Maps Island. Will I pulled from that to make my map land and blueberries just for this class? But you'll be using the map palette to build your own map island palette, and you could see that there's quite a few colors that accumulate. Okay, let's jump in. Let's go ahead and move the land layer up above and let's go ahead and alpha lock it. You could do it by clicking there, or you could use your two fingers. Okay, let's go ahead and create four layers. The reason we're doing four layers is we have four green colors and let's go ahead and move the color palette. Map color palette up to the top. Where else? You could just, um, if you copied those into your palate, you could just bring up your palate, your color palette, and it's going to this 1st 1 and let's name it Highlight I put with the island green highlight. The reason I do that is because I'm not sure if later on I'll probably have highlights. I know I have highlights in my Berries, so I want to make sure that if I am going through who knows 100 layers, I know exactly what I'm dealing with. So second layer was a medium color, and then the next layer is the dark. As we progress in that lesson, all make sure that I tell you which color were using according to the map palette. OK, the fourth and layer will be another leaf color, and I'm just gonna call it island details. It's just a color just to accent with Okay, we have our land layer Alfa Locked, so let's go ahead and do a clipping mask on each of these layers. So we just click on it and hit clipping mask and that way. Anything that we paint on those particular layers will just end up on the land and not in the ocean part. Okay, let's go ahead and click on the highlight layer, and we're gonna use but one of these four brushes and let's go ahead and use the water and pigment brush. They're all native to procreate, and we're working with the oops. I have to change my color light green. You could refer to your map palette for that color and do a color pick and let's go ahead and swish it around. Try and kind of tap it. Experiment with the different brushes because a lot of times they'll do different things depending on your movement. And I know that the center of this island is lighter green, and the outside has more of the evergreen trees. So that reason I know that is because I've saved different inspiration things, you know, maps and drawings, professional drawings in my folder of organization. So let's go ahead and go to the medium green. Medium green is the same color that we did the color drop on the island right there. Bet what we're gonna do is we're gonna change the blending mode to multiply. And that way we could see a whole different color and also see what we're doing. And we're gonna use the water brush. There it is, and we're gonna bring it down just a little bit. We're gonna keep it fairly big because it's on a clipping mask. We don't have to worry about it painting in the ocean and we can get that beautiful washy look by using the edge. The edge is more Oh, the opacity is less so It's more translucent and again because I know that this area up here has a campground. I'm gonna make it a little bit darker. And then let's go ahead and go on to the shadow, which is the dark color green, and we'll use that same water brush color. We'll just change the size of it, and again we'll go over the edge and experiment. You can always use your two fingers and go backwards and redo it. Now I have to say that the reason this map is going to look a little different from what I'm gonna use, probably in the next or next video or two videos from now in the final video is because I did this and this is actually the third time I've done it. If you could believe that. And one time it got lost. The one time I did it was the original, and I don't have a video of that. So anyway, backing up your files sometimes to the cloud doesn't work when you dump it or you get a new Smartphone. So let's go ahead and go back a little bit. I'm gonna go ahead and use the eraser using that same brush and erase some of it using the brush just to tone it down in the dark spots. And this won't be a stark went once. I changed the blending mode and also the opacity just some little touch up and play around . And I know that the outside has a lot of evergreen, So I want to give this depth and it's on its own layer, each of the greens. So I really have a lot of latitude for playing around with the opacity and also changing colors. Okay, let me turn these off, and one at a time I'll turn him on. Okay. And then island detail is gonna be that olive green and the palette Ooo The reason that I'm using this color and I'm using damp brush is because I wanted to kind of tone down that blue green color. And just by adding this more of a yellow tone of green, it just brings in that added depth. I'll turn on that olive color off and on so you could see the green and the blue. Okay, Now I'm gonna start playing with the blend modes, my favorite thing to do and the opacity. And I'm just speed this up and then all in, tell you what I've done. Okay? After playing around with the blend modes and opacity, this is what I ended up with the land. Of course, the drop is just normal. 100%. The highlight is normal 100%. And then the medium color is on multiply 77% and the dark green is multiply 70% and the island details. The olive is screen 100%. Now yours probably will end up different. But this is where I landed. Okay, Let's go ahead and keep it organized by grouping. So we’ll swipe. We'll click on the 1st 1 and then swipe the ones underneath it. And then let's go ahead and go up to group and let's call that land and we're almost done. All we have to do is add a little bit of texture to the tan outer islands. Okay, let's go ahead and create another layer and let's make it tan because we're gonna be doing details on that outer island and we're gonna be using the brush flicks and let's go back in here and call it Outer Island details. Okay, now we're in normal blend mode, so noticed that so on that layer, let's go ahead and clip it to a clipping mask. Actually, let's first, I'll show you how it looks without the clipping mask. And with normal chosen, so normal chosen and no clipping mask, let's go ahead and test out. See, it goes into the ocean so it needs to be clipped and then also in order to see the flick, let's go ahead and change the blend mode and seeing let's run through it and it get bigger so you could see. So just look at those little spots. Okay, let's go ahead and settle on ad. Okay, I cleared that off and I'm gonna go ahead and redo it with smaller. Let's adjust it a little bit bigger, smaller flicks. So it's not so huge, and you could change the the flick size. The circle sizes, according to the size of the island, is the way I decided. There's some real tiny ones. You just have to experiment. I do a lot of two finger backwards and redo. It goes fast. And then on this one for the main island of Washington. What I do is doing a little bit small on the outside. And then I do the bigger ones towards the center. Okay, let's go ahead and bring down the opacity. I moved it over so you could see it. So watch the dots and you could see it just kind of blend in and I'll make it bigger so you could really see. It just makes it very subtle. You don't want the outside islands to look real busy. Okay, we’ll collapse it down. We're done with the land and will go on to the next lesson. And that will be the shoreline 12. Shoreline : In this lesson, we're going to be working on the shoreline colors, the dark blue, the Aqua, and the white. So let's get started. First off, will create three layers, shadow blue. And then we're going to create another layer. And it's going to be the midtone, turquoise or aqua And then we'll create a third one, which would be the closest to the black shoreline. And that's going to be called Highlight white. Highlight white. Okay, so let's get back to make sure we're on shadow blue. And right here's the blue. Let me show you will be doing this dark blue and then this aqua color and white. So let's go ahead, make sure we're on blue. And for that, all three of them, we're going to choose this water brush, which is native. And it's inside my Illustrated map folder. And I'm going to try it first as 6% and I'm going to be out pretty far. Yeah, I think that's good. But let's go ahead and make it bigger, make it easier. And I'm not going to worry about getting into the bay areas because the dark indicates a deeper water and I'm thinking it will look more natural or normal to have the this in here. Maybe I'm going to go like this to be the shallow water because it's probably beaches and it probably is shallower. There we go. Perfect. Okay. Next, let's go ahead and choose our turquoise and make sure we're on the midtone will choose that same brush. And on another layer, the midtown is in the middle as far as the order of the layers. Because with blending Modes and opacity, I want the white not to be so brilliant, and I want him to be able to pull from each other. So let's skip back on there and let's get going here. If you have any reservations as to whether or not that's going to look good as far as the overlapping of it. Go in and change your blend mode in, even take it down and see what it looks like. that looks really nice, blended. And you can imagine with the white, it's going to look really good here. And let me go ahead and show you with the white. Make sure we're on the white layer. And I can go ahead and not worry about the white being under the landmass. To want to do is move your opacity down on the dark blue because you want it to blend in and not be such a rigid, vivid edge. This is how it's going to look right here. And I kind of like it better with just a little bit. So let's up the white. So let's go ahead and go back to the white, like that. Make sure we're on the right brush. More on the White. And let's just tuck it under like that. And it's easier if you go ahead and do it on normal so that you can see what you're doing. Okay, I'm going to speed it up again. We're simulating a brush and watercolour paint. So you don't want it to look perfect. And you do want it to be washy and see how it's lighten dark the luminosity and transparency. Midtone. Now. Okay, I'm gonna go ahead and finish the, the Aqua under the white color. And I'll meet you back here in two seconds. now, we're going to turn them all back on. And we'll work with the blending modes to make this gorgeous. And we don't really have to have a big area. We'll just put this like that. And we're just going to be watching how this works out. I like that on the highlight. I have it on Screen and I've taken it down to around 60 ish. And then on midtones on screen and took it down to around 88-90%, somewhere in there. And then on the blue, I have it on multiply. So it blends more into the background ocean. And it is on around 30. We're going to go ahead and keep the layers together. Let’s go head, group them. And I'll keep them separate from the back background. And so there we go. Okay. We've got the ocean, and we've got the main part of the land done.
