About This Class

Not having to follow a strict schedule and having the freedom to decide what to do and when to do it are two of the most common reasons why people are opting to work on their own either by becoming independent contractors, freelancers or entrepreneurs.

And believe me, I reached my seventh year working as a home-based video production freelancer, and this is still one of the biggest perks of this career path, but as good as it is, it comes with some challenge the biggest one of them all: Remaining Productive.

If you are one of those people working from home, you already know the drill: You start very energetic, and you are ready to tackle every task in your way but then you realize that you also have house duties, that you have to prepare breakfast and lunch, that your kids are there and you have to take care of them, that your wife/husband require your assistance for something among many more. Not to mention all the additional distractions around you, like your phone, the internet, Netflix, video games, etc.

Unfortunately, all those factors take their toll on your productivity, and if you donĀ“t put a stop to it, you will simply not be able to work from home for much longer. That is essentially why I have created this course. Inside it, I will share with you proven strategies that I use to be as productive as possible and have helped me move my freelancing business forward in the last couple of years.

So either if you have been working home-based for some time, or you are just starting, this course will help you on identifying your biggest distractors or productivity killers, on finding the proper working space in your house, on knowing the value of your time, on dealing with procrastination, on tackling numerous tasks and on boosting your productivity by leveraging or delegating part of your work.

1. Intro: Hello, everyone. This David Rodriguez and I welcome you to this new productivity masterclass. How to achieve more things while working from home. You know, back in the day when I decided to become a freelancer, one of my main reasons to do so was that I wanted to have the freedom to decide what to do with my own time. The thing is that when you are totally free to decide what to do at each moment, you end up doing a lot of the stuff you want to do and not so much of the stuff you have to do, which means that you are less productive. And that's the reason that we have to find ways to push yourself to do exactly what you have to do at the right moment. Otherwise, you'll end up progressed naming like most people do. And that is essentially the purpose of discourse, that we will be discussing a series of strategies that you can implement in your daily routine so that you can achieve more things in the same spot of time. So discourse is perfect for all those off. You feel that you're putting a lot of hours into work and aren't truly getting the results you were looking for. Believe me, I understand the frustration produces to be completely burnout and not getting results, so let's begin. 2. Understanding The Problem: all right, So the first step is to understand the problem on Although I told you in the introduction video that working from home was great, which I still think it is, The reality is that our homes are not designed to have a proper working environment. So just think back for a minute and try to room with the last job I had. I worked in an office like idea. You probably had a desk, a chair, a computer and probably everything around you was related to the stuff. You were supposed to complete your working schedule while in our homes who are surrounded by distractions. And if we don't stop those distractions, our work and our productivity will suffer. Now I have identified two groups or two types of distractions that you have to face in your working from home. The first group is the sort of distractions that you can stop at any moment, like connecting to the Internet, to watch videos on YouTube or using your phone or playing video games or what Netflix. The second group's off distractions are those that you can not a boy while you're in your house. For example, your house duties or go grocery shopping or taking care of your kids. Now, since you don't have control over the distractions in the second group, you have to take action to prevent the distractions in the first group on. The best way to do so is to create a proper working environment. You can do so by creating your own distraction free home office, so we have a spare room in your house. You can put your computer there and all your work material staring and isolate for from the world so that you're completely focused on the task at hand. Now, if you don't have, ah, spare room in your house is going to be a little bit more difficult. But it's not impossible. So whichever room you decide to pick us working spot for today, you have to make sure that it's not field with distractions. That's the reason why when people ask me which room to pick usually tell them to go to their dining room because they're dining. Rooms are not filled with many stuff. You can still use the dining table that's your desk. Now I understand that this is the problem. If you have kids In that case, you will have to use any other room in your house. Just make sure that whichever room you pick, it's a place where you can isolate a little bit so you can concentrate on the job. 3. Understand Your Own Limitations: now that they have a better understanding old you're working environment and how that affect your productivity, you have to look into yourself. Do you get distracted easily? In that case, you need to put an action plan in place to either prevent or to completely avoid any sort of distractions that might percent working day. Let's use one of the most common problems or for modern era YouTube. So let's say that you're working and you feel the urge off watching YouTube video. Click the play button and you watch the first video on. Then another one comes up on another one, comes up on another one, comes up on when you realize that we have wasted a complete our watching YouTube videos. If that's your case, you can go as far us shutting down the Internet of your house so you don't have the temptation off going into YouTube on Watch more videos. What about your work? Are you doing something you're not very good at or something? You don't enjoy it all? You know there's a rule called the 80 20 Rule or Departed Principle, which says that 80% of the results come from 20% of your actions. That means that you have to look into yourself and find your truly productive activities on focus on those instead of doing everything. Now I understand that in order to be able to hire somebody else, you need to produce more income, can pay that person to do stuff that you don't like to do or the stuff that you're not very good at. But you'll see the difference you will making your productivity once you hire somebody else . And finally, in regards of your own limitations, have the every tractor. Do you know exactly how many straight hours can work on your project with a feeling burnt? You know, back when I started, I thought that there more hours I put into my work that mark productive I would be. But later, by analyzing house how how I was spending my time, I understood that it was not about putting more hours but being truly productive in the hours that I was at my most energetic. But identifying your own limitations, your strengths and using those strengths to be more productive overall. But in order to do so, you will need to have a plan. So let's take a look of the plan. 4. The Plan: you know, there's a famous quote attributed to Albert. Einstein says Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, and that's what you have to think about. If what you're currently doing is not really working, you need to make a change. You need to put in action planning place to being more productive. Otherwise your product will inevitably fail or they will take more time than you can afford . However, there's a very important thing that you need to understand. And the fact that we're talking about productivity and implementing a productivity master plan doesn't mean that we are going to be focused on work and hustling 24 7 what it truly means. It's that there's going to be a time for everything on whenever you're a certain activity, you're going to be completely focused on such activity. So, for example, if you want to have family time, you're going to be completely focused on your family. If you're going to be taking a break, you're going to be disconnected from work. But when you're working, you're going to be completely focused on your business and nothing else, because it is not about investing more time, but about getting more results with the same resources available. Okay, so let's take a look at the faces. That thes pro duty master plan has the first face or the first step off. This productivity master plan is to understand how much time is worse. The 2nd 1 still identify your distracters or productivity killers. The 3rd 1 is to use a goal and reward system. The 4th 1 is to use to do lists, and the fifth and last one is leveraging. So let's take a look at the 1st 1 5. How Much Your Time is Worth: There's an irrefutable principle in this economy that we cannot deny time. It's money. On every hour, every working hour you waste your basically throwing money away. Now, if you have a regular job, you're getting paid by the hour. You're basically covered in case you're you're wasting time. But when you're a freelancer or an independent worker, things are very different firstly, because you didn't get paid by the hour. But usually you charge a flat fee for the whole project, and secondly, you usually get paid upon project completion. This means that the faster you complete project them or valuable your time is on vice versa . Also finishing faster needs that you can take on additional products and ultimately produce more income. Now that you are aware off the value of your time in the reason why you cannot waste any time when you're working, you need to know exactly how much is your time worth in money, and to do so, you will have to create a. But now I go a little bit deeper about this topic in my book and my course called The 10 Things I Wish I knew before I started freelancing. But I'm going to explain to you very simple. Here. The first step is identifying your basic monthly budget by adding app all your monthly expenses. For example, you rent your gas, you're carrying shuras groceries, etcetera. Now to the total you currently have, you're going to add a 10% US an emergency budget, another 10% as a retirement one and a 20% to pay your taxes. Add all those up and you will get your basic monthly budget, but we are not quite done yet. In order to be able to calculate your hourly rate, we need to know exactly how many realistically working days you're going to have throughout the year. You do this by taking old days in the year 360 pipe and subtracting the weekends holidays, subtracting some sick days, etcetera. I have already calculated that a freelancer works about 120 days a year. That means roughly 10 days a month Now you have to do is to take your monthly budget on divided by the 10 realistically working base we're going to have throughout the month. That will give you your daily party, and then you can take that daily budget on divided by the 8 to 10 hours you're going to work throughout a day to get your hourly rate, and that is your magic number. That's the amount of money you'll be wasting every time you're supposed to be working on. Instead, get distracted with other things. So the next time you see to work, make sure you are in a completely distraction free environment. Also mature. They have all the resources you need to complete the general hand available to use it so you don't waste time looking for them and make sure that you are as focused. It's possible so that you can have more value to every single hour you work. 6. Identify your Distractors or Productivity Killers: So let's be completely honest if I ask you right now, what do you waste more time on throughout the day? But we simply don't take action. We don't take action because if we do that, we get out of her comfort zone and, unfortunately, remaining in the comfort zone. It's a straight path to failure now. If you want to be productive, the first step is definitely identifying your distracters or productivity killers, which could be quite easy to identify with a simple reality check like we did at the beginning of this chapter. But what happens when you why not put a finger on it? Or when you have identified some distracters and you have taken action, but you're still wasting time when you're working. Chances are that an activity or a behavior that you don't consider a major factoring your productivity is what is actually affecting you. And the easiest way I have found toe identify. This is by creating an activity locks document, which is basically a sheet where you write down everything you do throughout the day for over a week, and then you draw conclusions on your behavior. Now I explain how to craft this document in a deeper manner in my seven teas to boost your freelancing business course that you can watch here in the platform as well. But it's basically that you do take a document. You write down everything you do from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed and you do that for over a week and you be surprised by the results. In my case, I was aware that I was spending a lot of time checking my email on my social networks on a daily basis. But when I created my activity locks document, I found out that I was wasting almost one hour every day drinking coffee, which is crazy. I mean, we all tend to do that way, take a little break, we go. Oh, have some coffee, probably done it, and when you count down the minutes, you're probably wasting more time than you think. So creating an activity locks document is quite important to identify those small activities that you don't think that are important. But in the end they are because they are affecting your results. Now let's forget about the beauty looks for a moment. I'm sure you guys are going to craft your own and all also make sure to share any cures activities for behaviors you have like my drinking coffee. Have it Andi shared with the class. Probably somebody else has the same habit. They have not realized it yet. Now, leaving that behind, we're going to move forward to the four most common distracters, or productivity killers that we all tend to have in your house and how to deal with them. 7. The 4 Most Common Distractors or Productivity Killers: they are not in relevance. Order e mail Our phones, Internet and family about email. If we are like it used to be, probably checking your email every half an hour or every hour, and you are wasting a lot of time to deal with that. I said a schedule where I Onley check my email two times a day, one in the morning to make sure that anybody who has written to me throughout the night or sent any job request or anything gets answered for first time in the morning and one in the afternoon so that I'm sure that I check every single email that I get throughout the day. Now about your phone on, you know, technologies great and smartphones her great, but they became a major factor off distraction. So we use our phones to check our social networks also to check our email to chat with other people. And if we are one of those people who cannot get rid of your phone or you are using old a time, you will have to find ways to prevent it from interrupting your work, like shutting down notifications or shutting down the phone. First pound of time. While you're concentrated of working on something, just keep in mind that whatever is waiting for you in your phone can wait a little bit while you work. Probably don't. The 3rd 1 which is probably one of the biggest one, is the Internet on. I know we used entrance for a lot of things. You're probably crafting a document. You need to check the grammar off word, or you need to check for some music for your video, or you need to watch one tutorial. I know the Internet is very useful, but he sold to a major distracting factor when you're working. So I have gone as far as shutting down my Internet like I told you in a previous video, just to make sure that I'm fully concentrated and fully productive at a time. And whatever I need the Internet for, I just wait a little bit. So, for example, if I need to check a word, I make sure to make a list off all the words I need to check to write my document on. Then, in one single time, I go to the Internet and check for everything I need, so I'm not tempted every time I need something to watch something else and last but not least, family. And this is probably the hardest one, because dealing with your family with the people you love and the people you live with is going to be quite harsh. And believe me, it happened to me because when I started, I was still living at my parents home, and the fact that I was working from home made them think that it was available for anything they needed. So for, for example, I could be working on the clients value. My mom was asking me to pick up some groceries, so to go pay up the credit card or something. And the only way I found to deal with this was by telling her Mum, I love you. But you have to understand that the fact that I don't work at an office doesn't mean that I'm not working or that I'm available for anything you need. So you can probably set a schedule to tell them. OK, my working schedule is going to be from eight in the morning to 5 p.m. On after 5 p.m. I can do anything you want, so set a schedule, make sure your family knows about it and make sure they respect 8. Procrastination: So far, we have talked about how to calculate the value of your time, so you push yourself to waste as little time as possible. We have also talked about how to identify your biggest distracters so that you can take action to avoid getting sidetracked while you're working. But the one thing we have not talked so far, and it's probably one of the biggest challenges for any freelancer working from home East procrastination for those of you who don't know procrastination is our tendency to push back the things we have to do in favor of doing things that provide instant pleasure, instant gratification. So let's suppose you're a freelancer and you need to craft your website in order to promote your services. Let's suppose also that you're not very good at it and you don't like it very much. But you still know you have to do it, work a little bit on it on. Then you get tired, you're going to the Internet. You watch a tutorial on other topic, or you watch another video on. By the time you realize that you have wasted a lot of time, so you don't continue working on your website that the next day comes up and still no, you have to work on your website, but you don't like it. So you do something else since death on. Then again, another day passes by and we have not work on your website. That is procrastination. And here's a very important thing to understand procrastination and seeking for instant gratification happens because off our inability to see the bigger picture, because of our inability to see the benefit in the long run on, instead of its settling for ah, less rewarding but immediate benefit. And that, my friends, is essentially the key to overcome it. If you are fully aware that the benefit in the long run is vigor than the benefit, in the short term, you're not going to settle for less. But there's a catch. Our minds on our bodies are natural inclined to instant pleasure on, despite the fact that we rationally no, that the benefit in the long term is vigor than the one we're getting right now, we will still seek for dad instant reward and as complicated as it seems, there's a way around it, and that's essentially well, we're going to discuss in this chapter, so stay tuned 9. Goal & Reward System: Now you know that procrastination it's basically in our DNA were naturally inclined for it . The difference between those really productive people and everybody else is that they are aware of the benefits in the long term, and they're able to stop their procrastination as fast as possible, while other people simply keep procrastinating on and on. Now, in order to solve this problem, I have found a very quick way around it, which is implementing a simple goal and reward system where I allow myself to procrastinate a little bit after I have accomplished a certain goal. So, for example, in my case, I like to watch Netflix, but I will only allow myself to watch a couple of episodes if I reach certain milestone in my work. So, for example, if I have to deliver a video in a couple of days, I know up to which point off the video I have to reach every single day. And if I meet those expectations I have, I will allow myself a little procrastination by watching a couple Netflix episodes. But in the other hand, if I don't reach those milestones, I won't watch an episode. And that's a way to punish myself for not being productive. And I know some people is going to have an opinion about the strategy because it seems counterproductive the fact that you're allowing certain procrastination, but the reality is that we have limitations were naturally inclined for it on the best way to control it is by simply allowing a little bit off it after you have reach certain goals . So instead off procrastinating first and then reaching the goal, you reach the goal first so that you can procrastinate later. Now, in order to implement his gold under war strategy, you must first set some goals, and the best way I have found to do this is to get the bigger picture first. What do you want to achieve and then break that into smaller goals that you need to complete first in order to reach the bigger vision? Let's take a look. A couple of examples. Now let's suppose a client hired me to craft an animated video for him, have to deliver such radio within a month. Now the bigger picture here is to complete the animated video. Have it delivered to the client within the time from given. Now I'm not going to crop the video right away. I need to follow some steps, so the first step will be to craft a script. The next step will be to craft the story board. After that, I'll have to hire a voice actor to make the voiceover for the video while I work on the graphics. And finally I work on the animation and yet ing off the video. So, as you can see, there are about four milestones that I have to complete in order to reach the bigger picture. And after I complete each of those milestones, I try to reward myself. Now I understand that the Project nature of video makes it easy for me to set a goal and to set some milestones to complete such gold. But you can do this, or you can use this very same system for any sort of gold you have. So, for example, what if you want to create a business unit to get the business idea first, then you probably need some market research or craft your business plan, and after that you need to get the financing. Then you need to hire the people. Then you need to find a place where to. The company is going to be located on DSO one now. As you can see, it doesn't matter how big your goal is. You can break it down into smaller goals. On those smaller goals, you can break them down into small milestones that you can reach on a daily basis, for example, and as you complete those milestones, you reward yourself in order to keep you concentrated in the bigger picture and in order to control procrastination. 10. TO DO Lists: a simple as it sounds, keeping a proper to do list is one off the stepping stones of productivity. This list contains everything you have to take care on from the most relevant, most important and can craft them in a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. I gotta admit, I'm a fan of to do list, and I have been making them ever since I was a kid. I loved him so much because they give you a working framework for every moment of your day . On day, someone guarantee that you will not inadvertently forget about eight important test A. You have to take care on. They're especially useful when facing large amounts of work. Now, though, listing everything is useful. It becomes even more efficient in regards of productivity. If you prioritize all the task of 10 let's take a look at the five steps to craft a proper to do list. The first step is quite simple. Now that we have a complete list of activities, you're going to write down an estimated completion time for each off the tasks you have listed. This would clarify which activities are more time consuming than the others. Fourth, we're going to run through your list again, and you're going to identify which activities are important on which activities are urgent . You obviously need to understand the difference between those two concepts on important activity is one whose outcome leads to the achievement of your personal goals. Well, now that you know how to craft the property to do list, you have to put it in practice today so you can start seeing how your productivity increases. But the reality is that you know people can learn on if you showed them how you like things to be done, they do most likely do it the way you want it, and consequently you will be able to achieve more and be more productive. Just think for a moment. How much more things will you be able to achieve if you could concentrate on the things that you're very good at, and you could delegate the things that either are not very good at or you don't like to do like, for example, invoicing, I don't know, sending quotes or answering emails, right? Here's a quick reality check it doesn't matter who you are. We all have the same 24 hours in the day on our productivity is measured by how we spent those hours. Now, as I have talked in previous courses, when you're starting, you don't have much of a choice. You're going to be a one man army. You'll be doing everything by yourself because you don't have the resources or you don't know the people that can help you. But if you keep trying, if you keep working, you will eventually reach a point. When you realize that if you want to move forward, you will have to delegate part of your work to somebody else. This is what happened to me ever since I started freelancing, you know, doing animated beauties and visual effects for companies. I was kind of reluctant to her somebody else because I had this feeling that they would not be able to match my ability. And despite the fact that I was aware that I was not very good at everything, I was a still reluctant to hire somebody else. Now, sometime later, I got contact by DIS agency in Virginia to record my services to the special effects for a couple of commercials. They were shooting part of the job implicated that there was an extensive rotoscoping of two characters in front of a forest. For those of you who don't know, rotoscoping is basically tracing frame by frame, these two characters in front, off a blurry background. And this is a very time consuming job. And, you know, I was a word that although I could do the rotoscoping by myself, it was going to take a lot of time. And I have to be honest, I'm not the best person at it. So for the first time ever, I decided that I had to look for somebody else to do the job to surfing through the Internet. I found this guy from India whose specialty was rotoscoping, and he was willing to do the job for a very fair price. So I decided to give it a shot, and to my surprise, he delivered a fantastic job. He even delivered before the time I was expecting. So after these have, I was like, Okay, I'm not doing rotoscoping again. This guy does it better than me in a short amount of time than me so I'm not doing it myself anymore. The fact that this person was able to tackle that part of the job meant that I could spend more time doing the things I was very good at, which was crafting the visual effects for the commercials on when I delivered, the final result declined. They were very satisfied and, you know, they became a regular client. Now I gotta admit, I was very lucky to find this person the first time around on the reality for most people is that they have to go through a lot of people before they find, you know, that one person that suits their style better. The moral of the story is simply that if you can successfully leverage part of your work to somebody else, you will be able to concentrate on the things that are more relevant to your business, meaning that you will be more productive. Now before we finish this chapter, we need to clarify something. The word leverage means the mechanical bandage or power again by using a lever in this analogy, when you delegate work to somebody else, that person is your lever, but is not the only lever you can using your business. There's also technology, so if you find that there's a machine, a program, an app or something that will make your job easier, you'll have to go for it at thes real. Increase your productivity. So if you have never leveraged any of your work to anybody else, I encourage you to try it as this will be the only way you can truly grow your business. If you have a ready leverage or delegated something to somebody else and you have a great experience, I invite you to share here with the class, as this will give a a clue to the older students on what to expect. This means that by this point you already know what productivity is and the impact they has in her life and in your business. You also understand that despite the fact that working from home is great, there are lots of distractions around us on The only way to state really productive is to create a proper working space where you are isolated from those distractions.
