The Portfolio Design course will walk any type of designer through the process of creating a strong design portfolio. The course will begin with basics in layout design using both a sketchbook and Adobe InDesign, move into the length and audience of the portfolio, image and text choices, editing content, and lastly how to either publish a digital pdf or send a copy to a printer and produce a professionally bound book.

Students will also walk away with a clear understanding of expectations depending on the audience and different digital platforms (if the student decided to create a digital portfolio) that are common in the industry.

1. Trailer: Hi there. My name is Alexandra and in this course you will be going over how to create your own portfolio using adobe in design. This course assumes a basic understanding of indusind. However, we go over in depth powder, really adjust your images and text to create a beautiful design. Whether you decide to go digital with a PDS, they're playing somewhere online. Or if you're going to print this and send it to the printer in this course, we're gonna walk through who your audience is. You wait. You're setting up before month, then getting into storyboard how you might layouts together thinking about the war identity and what makes this a unique portfolio representing you. What type of content do you want to include and what, more importantly, to exclude for portfolio, then onto composition and organization? How are organizing this and how any type of reader look through and under Sambre, your projects are, lastly really thinking about being process and how much text your including how you were describing all of these images or projects and then going on to printer works. And this may not be for you if you're going to be exporting into a pdf and posting it on online somewhere. We will go over all the different kinds of print marks and file sizes. You may need to know if you are sending this file to printer, the class project will include little snippets of portfolio. You won't have to put your entire thing, but it would be a really great platform to both. Get feedback from myself and other students in the class to build your own wonderful portfolio, really looking forward to this, and I hope to see you in the class. 2. 1. Audience: Welcome to portfolio design one. A one in lesson. Number one, We're gonna go over the audience and ask yourself or different freshens help determine how to even begin in What type of portfolio is best for you. The first question you want to ask yourself is, Who is the audience? If I'm making this portfolio for a design firm in a job that I might be applying for in the same city or town, Am I applying to graduate school and sending something? Do you wanna client abroad and maybe have a digital portfolio that I can send them in a Skype interview? Or will I be going in person? And maybe you want to get a little leave behind or physical portfolio? So a lot of different questions here. Number one. Who is it? You're making this portfolio for number two? Do you want to create a physical or digital portfolio? This should go up with the audience. If I am applying for crowd school, there's probably some type of limitation and sighs that I have to go wipe. Maybe it's harmony spreads layout, final size and megabytes is a physical portfolio, so really understanding what the school may be asking. Perhaps it's a job that wants to see your your website, and you're creating more of an online. You are l of portfolio digitized, or is it digitizing the form of a PDS? And you're sending a link So someone in the design agency or firm can pass it around to bury his people, So understanding the who could determine whether you're gonna do it. Color, digital portfolio and you don't know it's always safe to start with a digital. PdF, and I'll go through a couple of different online platforms. You can put that on or it's simply a filing in share via email or people drive number three . Do I have a leaves behind? So this is embedded in number two. Is it physical or digital? So these examples right now I have put on interest are majority physical portfolios. Does it come in a package in our visit Multiple pimp lists, or do I have one beautiful bound book? And did I bind it myself and stitch it together? How is that put together anything about the craft? So that would be a physical book? Um, another option is having a small little sambal book that you can leave behind. It may be cheaper to make smaller or only include and highlight 123 projects in the best projects. Or is it a postcard? What I alluded to before it's more like a glorified business card that has the word information. So on your name to your contact information, especially your email that would also include a phone number and three. Is there a glimpse of your work? Maybe this is where your include your website, you Earl or your instagram handle. Maybe you have the hands account and we'll go through that as well. But this is something really nice, and I see more and more these days to have, like a small little leave behind that you can give it to you several different companies where you might have just the one beautiful portfolio that you bring with you on the interview and take away. Or is it is it all digital? And this is your one physical copy. Even give them on the beauty of a leave behind like this is. You can also have a quick email with this snippet of information and a link to everything so that way. So you're applying and you have one contact. They can send it to many people in that agency or firm number four project types. So going through a couple more of these examples online, um, issue was another online platform to how, pdf and thinking about what types of projects is their academic work included in here. That would be better if you were just out of school and you're trying to get a job. We're going to graduate school. But if you've been in the industry for over five years, maybe you're including the last five years of professional work and not going as far back as your activity work unless there's something really important we wanted to emphasize. So I'm going to go through and talk about some of these different tabs in options you might have online in the next lesson of a format. Hopefully, you're able to answer at this point in time, who is your audience? Is there any type of restriction, limitation or requirement that they're asking for your portfolio, which leads into Is it physical or additional personally? Oh, you're going to include a leave behind. And then, lastly, what pressure tapes do you want to include, then start to brings from which projects he may have that followed that. So that concludes Lesson one. We'll talk about format next lesson and where to take it from there. 3. 2. Format: Hi and welcome back to the portfolio Design one of one and Lesson number two. We're going to go over the format and how you might start to begin. Set up your portfolio so hopefully, unless a number one you've already addressed Who your audiences. If you're creating a physical or digital portfolio and what types of projects do you have? Are they very vertical horizontal? And are there any kinds of requirements? Say you're doing this portfolio for grad school or job application? Is there a particular file type, size or format that you need to follow? If you have answered all these questions or know the size, go ahead and open adobe in design and Guber and create a new file. So some basic formatting and set up here we're going to name or file and set the inches or centimeters sizes, page margins and lead settings. However, you could always go back and justice later. So for the moment I'm gonna go with eight by 12 inches, 20 pages, making sure they're facing so I can see the facing pages together for my layouts as you open it and read it like a book margins. I prefer to have quarter inch versions all around and leading slug. I'm going to have an eighth of an inch. That's typical standard printer settings of your helpful wheat images. However, if you're going digital, that will not matter. And go ahead and push Crete. So at this point, if you really don't know what size portfolio you're going to dio, I'd recommend going back to sketchbook and your images and projects and looking at Are they really horizontal or vertical thinking about those questions you answered in Lesson number one? Who the audience is the digital or physical? What, what do you creating his portfolio for and every hoping to put this one morning, What types of projects are you going to include in this particular portfolio? So once you dive in there, we're gonna go over a couple of basics setting up the file in design before we get into our next lesson. Just gonna go over storyboard and really thinking about those layouts. So right now you see, I have my portfolio example file open, and I want to make sure I have a couple of things open over here. I have got my pages layers in links If you don't see those, you can go under window and make sure they're on over here. Um, that should add it to the side, and you can see under pages what we have. The A master. We'll talk about master sheets and how we can create several of those high might apply it to either single pages or groupings pages at a time after we created our layouts and play those two masters. So this. Listen, we're going to stick strictly to format and setting up your documents here, all ready to go. Couple other things to note in this working space right now, I think up to view screen mode and see here that it's normal so I can see the pink and purple margin lines and the red believe line on the outside of my file if I go to preview and sometimes you can change these to toggle on and off, depending on how you set up your computer, this will show no outlines and guidelines Once we have our images and text really important to note, once you start aligning text boxes and bringing and other different pieces of content and do portfolio to look at what it's really going to look like when you export as a PdF and either publish it digitally or send it to a printer. So for now, I'm going to keep my screen mode on normal. Um, everything else is normal interface right now running the creative cloud Many of you might have that some of you might have some earlier CS six CS five CS four versions of Adobe in design. Um, basic tool bars. Hopefully, you have a beginners. Understanding in design, however, will go over everything that you need to know to apply for a portfolio. And if you need to pause, rewind and play back this tutorial, please go ahead. It's the beauty of online classes that you composite whatever you wish. Okay, so I've got all of my pages here on my go under pages and double click. I couldn't go to seven. There's nothing on here yet, but this is another quick way to navigate through. You can also scroll out and swollen to see them pretty far apart, making sure you're saving it. And lastly, the links will talk about this once we bring in content. But leave it up there for now. Well, discuss it as we get into some further lessons. So but believe started to set up and got the basic format down. You have your file already to go and you work through what size portfolio you want to create. We'll see you in the next lesson. 4. 3. Storyboards: Welcome back to lesson number three, where we're gonna go over storyboards. We're gonna start with the sketchbook and how toe actually sketch what different layouts he may use to input your content. And then how to set up your adobe in design file using the master pages in creating a variety of within that and some guidelines. So to begin story boarding, take out your sketchbook in any type of pen, a pencil. And before I know I've been to layouts and how you might begin to even think about laying them out your sketchbook, I'm gonna start with some basic terminology. Perhaps you already know this, but might be a review, or you might learn something. So right now I'm showing a spread like you might see it in design if you have facing pages . For example, if you were to click on page two, it'll bring you to this page on the left or Page three. It'll bring you to this page on the right. So each one of these our age individually But together, this is a spread. So imagine as you open a book, you have a spread. This notebook right now has page on the left, please, on the right. And this is the spread. Um, for this example project, I am going to use one project per spread to keep it a fairly brief and concise portfolio. However, this really depends on your audience. What type? Portfolio and type of work you're trying to show. Okay, Um, lastly, when I draw a box with an accident that is representative of an image or a text box and the image is assumed, fill that entire range. However, if I were to put text in this location, maybe it iss holding the bottom left corner were across the bottom. There was the text might not necessarily fill that entire X. However, it is still constrained within those limits. Okay, So to start story boarding, a couple of things I'm setting up for myself. I know that I would a project per spread. So that means each spread needs a title page. I also want the flexibility to have the title on the left or the right side. Um, and I might have my size right now. It looks like I'm doing a fairly square portfolio out. So maybe that's the case. Perhaps it's a little bit more wars until this is just my rough sketching. But to start, let's say I have an 8.5 by 11 one page that's horizontal. I like to start with the smallest grid possible and then add 6 to 8 iterations on a lot. So, for example, if I were to great this image into you nine somewhat horizontal rectangles in each of those representing an image or a textbook, that's going to be a starting point now. I don't really like this layout because there's it's two symmetrical and Humanae image is gonna be really busy. But this is a great starting block, so maybe you're starting with 69 or even 12 small squares after that. What I'm going to Dio is start to really play around, and this is where you can get messy in your portfolio. After that, we could start to play around, and that's where you can start really start sketching ideas and developed and play with different iterations. Somebody we work Graham, some may not. So right now if you look at all of these corner options, um, if I were to connect them all that be one big image No. If I were to start to think of this Azi, maybe three vertical blocks. So what I'm doing is taking these corners of the grid in creating three blocks. Um, again, you can start to see. Maybe that's an image that's an image. And this becomes text over here. Right? So you're starting with this grid of many, and really, it's starting to play with overlaps. And where do you start toe to pull some of those blacks or take them away? They're going to leave that blank. And I've created this four together right here and these two together at the bottom. Oh, so keep playing around with us. You could have a lot of different versions of images. This is taking the top three. That bottom left four in the bottom right square, however, leaving this one blank here in the middle. So imagine this square could be a little textbook. Maybe you're starting with this original grid in laying over trace paper and then start to just take it and draw over it of what all these options are and start layer several different Leo iterations. Once you go through this phase shoes anywhere from 3 to 8 different layouts You could bring limit in design. So right now, I'm going to choose these three, and we'll work on bringing those digitally. Okay, so now that we have gone through your iteration and sketching process, I have not chosen three layouts, and I'm gonna go through how to bring them into design and set up your digital pages so they're ready to implement your content. So open up this example, project, and, you know, I'm gonna decide. Maybe I do want to make that eat in half by 11. So I'm going to go back into my documents set up unchanged the page size. So again, pile documents set up and you can change it right in here. Okay. Awesome. So, no, I've got several pages. Remember, we talked about the bleed lines, the margin lines, and lastly, there's rulers and guidelines. So this is going to be really helpful. You're going to review and click on rulers if it's not there. Once you have your rulers up, if you right click, you can select the units you would like toward him. So whether that's inches centimeters, points millimeters, etcetera, you have several different options here. Okay, So once you have your rulers set up the units that you would like if you go over to your ruler click holding drug, you'll get some guidelines. So no. Here you can drag it from the top and the bottom. If you go into your layers panel, I can move these guides. Teoh. They're only er and call it guidelines. What? Okay, so little. Delete those for now and next going 20 pages and I'm gonna go up to a master. And right now I have a left and right. A master. If I right click since a new master, many will call it be. I just wanted to young age long New master wouldn't Well, let's see. Just have it be one page. So delete one of these. So a master is just one pages. Well, there's always a nun options if you're not applying master. So the B master, a Master Seamaster. That's where I'm gonna create each of those layouts. You could call this anything you would like, but know that master pages right now we see is applied to several of these different pages . You can move it over, um, to have be on there, so you'll see what monster sheets applied. However, we're just going to set up the master sheets with our guidelines. For now, someone a double click on that, a master and come over here into my page. So right now, looking at my layouts, I have three of them from our sketching exercise, and I could start to use those guidelines. So knowing that this is 8.5 inches of wide, um, I already have my quarter inch margins, which is really helpful. But I can also see here as I pull that guide, those dash lines and left. Maybe I want to come down to half a niche, and I'm gonna do the same everywhere. So instead of changing with margins, I'm gonna do this to show you, especially if you have some different weird sized images. It's really helpful to come in and bring your guidelines Well, so I've got my guidelines set up here. Another thing I like, Thio added, and just little My masters is the rectangle frame tools. If you go over here, there's an X through it. Um, it should actually snap to those guys. If I go under, if you grids and guides snapped two guides and it's on. Um right now you can see I have this just a floating box. If I were to go to view, scream it, preview. Nothing's there. I click on it. There's a box, but nothing's in it. So this is really important to stay in normal mode so you can see your guidelines and thes different rectangle frame tools because this is all for organization and outline that will not show when you exported as PDS we're going, princess. It's OK, so I'm gonna go back up to my pages and next, I'm going to go into the master. So if I double click there, you can see Explain, Say, I wanted to maybe bring over some of these guides. I can hold down the shift key. You can copy them, commits the be master right click piece in place, or use any of the commands. Depends that your computer is I'm sorry. Now I have the same margins that they created for that spread. Next, see what we're motherly out. So I have one that comes over about 2/3 of the way, Holmes. We're gonna call it around seven inches here. And another image that those top four quadrants, If you remember, John, not so right around five inches from the top. Okay, great. I also want ad a gutter or a space between images. So maybe right over here between seven and seven. Half from the left. Well, Governor, I'm also gonna keep, but we will pop inch mark everywhere. So right now, my margins agreed with the guides are half inch a little. So changed the layout. Cooper margins and I have created gutters in between images. Next, I'm actually going to keep using the rectangle frame toe. I really like to use this. Sometimes people don't like to use it because you might be deleting it to add a text box. But I think that's really helpful just to get the visual of these sections that I want to feel something, and I'm in fact being a manlier in my sketchbook. Nothing is in that quadrant, so I'm going to get rid of that. So go through and add all of your guidelines to your three different layouts, and then hopefully you'll have a the and C master sheet that you gonna start to apply to different spreads within. You're design. One last thing to note here. If you see here on my be layout, advise around a little bit. I can't fill in the text box. That is primarily there to tell me. Okay. I want to put something top left, bottom left and bomb. Right. But I want to leave this top rate quadrant plank so I would actually be drawing over something to put the images. And within their eso, nothing in those guides will move, but you can still snap. Tell me if you have a smart guide set up and it's a really helpful outline and Leo to create some different storyboard and spreads to go by in the next lesson, we are going to go over. You were identity. And what other things to think about in this set up and format before you start to put in your content? 5. 4. Identity: Hey, welcome back to lesson number four, but we're gonna go over identity and how that might relate to your portfolio. As we go through this, I have three questions to ask yourself and please take out your sketch. Becker. Some papers, right with pauses. Video grab a pen. Ah, this is going to help set up their portfolio and specific pieces to really make your own identity personalized. So number one. If you were to describe your design style of three words, what would that be? This could be any kind of adjectives. Typically, is it modern, sleek, simple, whimsical, bold, playful? Um, think about what would really describe your design and what you're actually showing this portfolio. Once you've come up with those three adjectives, now it's time to start thinking about what kind of typeface and if there's any color to bring into your design. So first run talk about typeface and here I have an example of two different paint faces that might work. If you were to say your design style is generally minimal, elegant and serious Holmes, Maybe it's bringing in a San Syrup and Sarah fonts of Baskerville and PT sans on to clarify these air uptight faces. The font is the different style, weight and size within that. So maybe it's PT sins bold versus light regular. So every different type face has various font options, especially with the weights and how thin and thick it might be. So this is a chance to really think about what to take. Cases do only use to start on this portfolio and give yourself some parameters within that . Another example. If you're thinking your designs are bold, clean and unique, maybe you're looking at so different cape faces that you don't hear about as often as a a Helvetica Ariel. So Lily or railway are two really nice options, and here they're shown as Let's see movies regular and Railway a black or bold, I thought at the moment. But both of those have several other options. So thinking about what kind of funds are going to represent you and your types of design. If you have really whimsical designs, maybe you're not picking a super sander tight face. Or maybe, do you want to let your designs shine and have something simple, like a song? Sara, Like Mouly here, Question number two is this portfolio representing your business or isn't representing you as an individual Probably already have an idea for this, But this will also help with identity. If you're representing your business, what is the business style? What kinds of designs are they producing? How did themselves out there? Vs If it's just you, how is your identity shining through this powerful? What is individualistic about you versus some company that has already establish some type of brand? It ain't gonna be already. For example, if I look at Adobe Portfolio, so several portfolio examples online. This is a great pop. ERM, we'll talk about this a little bit more leader on, um, effect. Click on just a random example Here, Um, here it looks like it's 1% and you could say contact about me, but look at what bonds they have chosen. You know, images. How this comes throughout, talking about one individual as a designer and simple photo, not quit looking up the screen with simple text that separated with a lot of white space. Say, with the photo going back and speak one word example to talk about a little bit more. Uh, here's another one. Steph Boxter. So this particular persons really into him lettering and has created their own logo and sign to put on the website. But the text is a really simple Sohn sirrah. And while the illustrations and him letter a really unique, an intricate everything else is just simple to get the idea across. Um, title. There's different sizes and hierarchy within the text. It will talk a little bit more about text in depth later on, but think of. But text in images, all part of your identity and higher showing your work representing you or a business last question. What do your other design platforms look like? This is really important to consider when putting portfolio together. What is already on your website if you have one. What's in your social media To have an inspire account? Dribble the hands portfolio online somewhere, maybe already having a JB portfolio. Do you have a Twitter page of Facebook? Page? What is already out there that you're showing a line? And lastly, do you have a business card or any type of print products that already representing either you or your company? So thinking about what do all these look like And if you don't know, this is definitely worth researching and looking at and comparing why you put this portfolio together. Maybe the portfolio is where you're trying to rebrand and rethink about yourself, but you should have similarity and consistency across all of these different platforms, so take in to account. Do you already have a different type face that you've been using? Or perhaps you have a specific call out colors a great yellow. And do you want to bring that into the portfolio? Go colors something tricky to deal with and should only be used intentionally but can also help Organize and let your drawing stand out Used as you answer these three questions. One. What are three adjectives that describe your design style? What you're putting in this portfolio? Is it for a business, or is this individual portfolio representing you? And lastly, do you have any other Onley platforms or print products that, already weight have an identity? Were a brand that you have started to establish? Looking at some last examples here, an identity and brand can go so far beyond a simple logo where this is maybe called bang bags and the enemy's canteen, and this is just a image found on interest. They have brought their identity from how the store looks from the outside, or how the the canteen looks, what their menu display is, how they're bringing that those colors, the bold fonts that are painted almost like graffiti and, lastly, how that even translates to the iPad and in business cards and other ways that consumers or users or viewers might see their branch their identity. So, really thinking about what are you trying to get across trying to choose to different plate faces to move ahead with and thinking about? What do any other platforms look like? Do you have an INSTAGRAM account? What's the whole mood and style there? And maybe bring out adjectives again from these different on line platforms in order to make it consistent in what you're going to show in your portfolio? In the next lesson, we're gonna start going over. How would fill in the content and really get going with those layouts and digital storyboards now and in design and how to pick and choose what you're putting in your portfolio 6. 5. Content: Hi there and welcomes Lesson five of portfolio design 11 In this lesson, I will be going over content that relates to images and text before we even dive into some portfolio examples. It's important to recognize some design principles that are fairly universal, mainly thinking about alignment, hierarchy, contrast, repetition, proximity, balance, color in space, some key things. No, here is hierarchy and both images and text and thinking about a lot of these different principles in relation to your organization and hopefully your story forward. It's relating to a portfolio example that I have found on issue. This is a really about an Italian man. You and it's a recent portfolio for an architecture student looking for work in this past year jazz and 17. And it has some really great examples of using hierarchy of images and tax that I wanna touch over. Also worth noting is whether you include a CV. So do you put that early on how the description about yourself and goals are, Do you want references within that and then into her table contents? So this is mainly way of organizing, which projects air where and how somebody could go through in cigarette out. Okay, What is everything she's worked on when she's showing this portfolio? No. Here the different hierarchy levels between text where there's main categories, some titles even page numbers on the side here, and she brings in some quotes in this late, great white and yellow color scheme. We'll get into color a little bit more organization. But here's a really nice example of using one key color other than black, white and gray scale. So thinking about the hierarchy here as well is the image full bleed behind with text over it? Are there drawings in a fully rendering image This late gray is used to call out some other forms, design and drawings with tiny little tags. So are you going to use numbers to label things or even have call outlines? Will you be labeling with maybe your color? And here we have a full spread. So giving variety again coming back to our layout and story boarding, how are you really distinguishing between every page? So it's not the same but still has a consistent with, um, and what are the big shots that you want people to focus on? I'm your main perspectives, drawings, paintings, illustrations, whatever that may be. It's really bringing in some of those principles. Thinking about your organization. Do you have arrows cleaning with titles? Is there text on every page? Right here is an example where there is just descriptions for the images, however, the description for the entire project is earlier on with a great call up box and talking about a year. What it was about and whatever else may be really important to distinguish it from other projects. The first step to really get started in content. Pick five projects you would like to bring into this portfolio Didn't get you can always add more. However. Five really great projects that showcase your work and with the best example is a really great place to start next step. For each of those projects, choose all of the images you want to include and begin to label numbers on them. So if you have four different images, label number 1 to 4 in order of importance. So this will really help your hierarchy of images. And hopefully your layout already has various forms of different image sizes and hierarchy within that story. Boarding exercise So Even if you have 10 images, start going through their order and hierarchy. I really like to take them over. Well, see them and check out which photos and including in my portfolio. So for step three, this is we're gonna start setting up your text hierarchy. So thinking about the size, weight and color, hopefully you already chose went through typography, exercise pickings, Aaron fonts that you want to include. Whether it's the same fun or maybe two different ones that go really well together in pair , you're gonna start thinking about the size weight in the color. For example, I put this together as a really brief description for maybe a product titles. Bold Lato is the country's here size 48 point with tracking of 200. Color is black for all of these project subtitle or descriptions, some sort of note here, the particular weight size trapping in color of the type This In this case I'm going with the Lato family, which has several options away from ultra thin, too heavy. So thinking about title subtitle. Maybe I have some skills emphasized. Body of text and image captions start to think about what kind of text, you might include there. There's probably several more options here and know also that in this particular example, my body of text for full of descriptions is really justified to left. So there's a hard edge on this text box closing it in, and I've also turned off all hyphenation, which I personally think looks cleaner. But it depends what you're turned to get after what your portfolio of style is, where work style is and how you want to describe your projects. So the final step of gonna hear a content another after, of course, organizing those images beautifully into some great file management and folders on your computer seeking reference. Those later open up your in design document when hopefully from previous lessons. You have already set up all your master sheets and brought in a couple different layouts. Right now, I just have three different layouts for the purpose of this tutorial to show you how to do it. But you probably have several more than just these three, and I've already started Teoh a sign different layouts to various pages so you can see here where it's a, B or C, were the beginning of the end have not always drag none on one of your sheets to keep that blank looping. Your file is all set up, ready to go in my layers panel. I have guidelines as their own layer. I'm now ready to start working and bringing in that content. So to start with that, I have a clean new layer which I will come back and name it as we go along. If I go into my pages, I want to make sure toe double click into those pages. Um, so if you're on a master sheet, it will be able to scroll and see your entire book. So right now, as I scroll down, you can see all my different layouts and master age guidelines on there. Something else to note you go interview screen mode. This is where you can toggle between normal in previous. So if I go to preview, none of those guidelines are really showing. But it gives me an area to bring these images and text and understand home gonna start plugging in that content. So whether you want to start with the title or not, that is totally up to you. Sometimes it's nice toe. Get into the content first, and once you discovered all of your text typefaces, maybe the title will come after and easily talk about bin. Or you might want to set the bar and bringing some kind style title. Also, we're thinking about whether you want to add a table. Clinton's You can always add more pages later. If you click on something Bush ad page, you can right click insert. PJ has moved pages, duplicate gauges, So there's a lot of different ways to come back in later, and Adam's into it or change ladies round. So hopefully you have your content. No labeled 12345 and I like to digitally label that, too. So I know which image goes where, however, depends on your workload while you want to do it. So if you look at this first spread from example here, I have one large, full bleed image, so that would probably take the number one. But how your higher key priority level, maybe my favorite image or it shows most about whatever design project I've been working on . I also have a fairly image heavy space here, and this is the time where maybe after diving through my content in projects, I decided, Oh, you know what? I really want to go back into this be master, and I just me lay out a little bit familiar, bringing both of these images over here and getting word of that one and keeping it thoroughly blank. So if I go back to be my guide, lines are still in that same spot, so I have to move those as well. But it will automatically, popularly, all of the different be master sheets that you have a flying to your pages. So the next step is to really begin hugging me with that content, writing the text. And in the next lesson, we will go over some other organizational techniques and layout and then finally and get into editing some key points in your class project. 7. 6. Organization: Welcome back. Lesson six and we're Folio designed one of one in this lesson. I was going over organization in different ways. You could really highly and organized or portfolio of whether you're gonna go digital prints out. So diving back into an earlier example of a portfolio that's fairly simple, not necessarily the most amazing one. But there's a lot of keep whites I can talk to be saying US organization can be thought of in 11 different ways. Well, in your file organization and how organizing those master pages your layers, your files in which photos you're even sourcing, especially using adobe and design, not embedding or linking those images. And, of course, there's organization within the design of the portfolio itself. So, as an overall briefs will through this document, we have got a cover page in the very beginning, a spread listing, the table contents and some quick credentials. Maybe it's schools degrees or a little bit about yourself. A photo description were cvx era. Then we've got one. Spread her project. So, looking at a couple different layouts here, there's probably several different master sheets, and it depends what you set up for yourself. It also varies whether the title pages on the left side or the right side and lastly there is an end spread. Five. The name highlighting what it is, the date and thank you for your consideration. So this looks like it's a early grad school portfolio that the author is trying to put together some our future unions and publication examples. So diving were into table contents. There are ways where you don't need a table contents to organize your files. Maybe you have colors on the side of the agents to organize. Whether the blue section in the yellow section, the red section ordered the closing we use you describe where you are in the process that would tell you, or you can use these numbers. We have little image snippets right here. It's highlighting some feats that signs about the amazing with the skills or programs used and the little image of each of them. Then, more importantly, if you drive into one of these pages, you can see that there's a couple of different titles, architecture or one designed prosecution landscaper picture sketch, fun at the very bottom, and it is bold italicized. If that is the focus. So taking a few key items, This is just one way to start to organize, and that goes for every single, different project. Haley. But we look into the text. There is a hierarchy where main title must have a thin fine and a much bolder version. That's all cups. It's very consistent. There's a little culo in this teal blues and what the just of the project is, and then a more in depth description. The page numbers are always listening on the pages that one of the pages of each design that does not have a full bleed image so it's not ever listed above a full bleed image. So thinking about how you're going to do that, do you want page numbers? Are they on the bottom right where they come in every page? Do you wanna have something where it's calling out what type it is or isn't simple enough just to talk about it in the description? Another thought for organization. This is really particular in this floor plan. Example for architecture, so it depends what types of design you have. Well, Mr bring in numbers. So these numbers and a key the list was going on. Or do you just have titles under each different drawing that explain little corruption about the drawing itself? When you dive online and you're organizing things on, Maybe in Adobe website for portfolio or some other platform that you used organization is a whole other ball game. It's more how you're setting up this website and on this particular website. If I cover over these images, there's a title, a little blip about the project and what it's about. So this is exhibition design, art direction and graphic design. And if I click on that, it will bring me to an entire page similar to a spread all about that project well, so if I go back, I come from another one. It's still very similarly out. So whether you're working with a digital portfolio, that's when we turned into PS printed or purely in website form. You still need to organize a project, have a consistency in higher D within that, even though every image thumbnail on this particular website is the same size, which also has consistency, there's a hierarchy and sense of which ones what color is placed where what projects are at the very top that are more likely to click on. So once I click on those that's all fairly similar. Here is a whole bleed image with a little bit more goes in depth runing projects, and there's also two different languages here. We'll just something to think about. It's we working class a place where there's multiple languages, so diving back into that portfolio start to think about how you organize it. Look up. Some examples issue online. I ss you You is a great resource that some Piaz do. We portfolio has several options of different platforms using particular. Do we portfolio layouts? However, there's some great examples here. Or do you want to go on to interest and start to search things? Using resource is look around and see how other people have maybe thought about it and then think about on a totally different scale. What makes sense for your projects? And what are you trying to get after? Set them look going through, you know, really organizing your portfolio. Editing: Welcome back to Lesson seven portfolio design, while one where I will go over editing a couple techniques to really find those images and text within your portfolio design. So jumping back into that in designed file, I'm going to zoom in here into one of my spreads. You could have another images just to go a gruesome techniques. Right now I have my selection tool or this black arrow, so move around with this blue box around it. Right now. It'll move or I want. If I decided, toggle it in and out. The image goes with it, however, if I click on that again and go to the jack selection tool could see here but hover over have the and that's Channing's across. And I can really start to move the image round and grab these brownish outlines, too dragged around but another truck. So right now, if I click this, you could see my images, and going to the far edge is to right. Click and go sitting. You can play with Phil frame proportionately, get the content proportionately. You can then fit the frame to the content. So the couple different options here, depending on what's best for you. And maybe I want this little dog bone cut in the CNC plywood to more centered. You can bring it up till I think that seen us right and click outside so you can get us with all of your images to really choose what and want to crop bound. I laid on in those images, maybe here, zooming into further detail. Right now, he's inches there, pretty close to their full size. But you don't go back and do fitting Phil frame proportionally, So go ahead and and do this with all of your images. If you do have some full bleed images, make sure that you have some bleed settings and if you're going to print it, but it is going eighth of an inch or tweet 1 to 5 inches outside of this boundary. This document was used as a digital PdF, so it doesn't matter. You've been saying bounding boxes right where Pages. However, if I want to add the lead settings, I could go back up to file documents set up, hold down bleeding slug and add the bleed through out there jumping into the text. Some similar things you can do here If I click on this text box and I decided that I do know I want to include high informations, that boat to type your rights. And here we're gonna have a lot of professions right now. If I check the hyphenate box, it will still have innate those letters. However, words I'm going to click it off. This is where I could also change. I'm justifying all the lines justifying with the last line left. It was just the line left, center or right, Mom. So here I can really play with what I think looks right. And again, whatever you choose here, try to be consistent wall all of your descriptions or whatever hierarchy this little of text is in particular going into images where maybe I have a sketch line in the background . I want to make sure that it's actually included in this entire frame. So I'm not chopping off those edges unless I really want to. The beauty of field is the direct selection tool is that you're actually policing these images within frames and could move them accordingly within those frames to cater to what your design is and where you want to show didn't have control over every part of the image . The last part of the editing process is just sleep on it to go through and check the spelling to put your braiding what images you're including. You can click on text boxes and go under edit selling check Smelly, but it's best to really print it. Read it online, send it to other people to both double check spelling grammar and that it makes sense. Did you explain the design? Sometimes any designer was really her time writing. Unless you have some more experience writing, it's not the case with everyone. It's sometimes difficult to write about it. What is important to write about your design? Some of these descriptions are a lot longer than others. So give it to a friend who has no idea what any of this is about and have them read it and see if we understand the editing process can both come in you graphically in fixing all these little nuances and alignments. Whether these text boxes align, bringing in those guidelines, making sure everything looks like it's together, spoke correctly and bring other people untreated over that concludes all little tip. Wanna one where I will go over different explain options. Go ahead and open up that adobe and designed file of your portfolio. Whether you're going to turn this into a PdF or a printed booklet, I will go over both of those options. If you are doing website, there are several different ways to publish your website to which platform they're using. So that will be a little bit to friend and dependent on the website source. So I'm gonna go over if you're exporting anything out of Adobe in design. So the first option have my whole file here. I've gone through edited switch pages around, ready to go, and I have saved my file. So making sure while safe now where to go to file expert. I'm gonna go straight to my desktop just to give this as an example, and I'm gonna go to Adobe pdf print So you are going to select Adobe pdf print if you're going digital or your printing a book forever again when we're with digital version first and save. So before you push export, you'll have a whole prompts when several options here. First there's the general options. Everything here should remain the same. Al the default and Dobie, unless you have changed it, you go into compressions where the file size can change again. Given that default should usually be okay, marks and bleeds so you don't want click on any of these for the digital PDS output it advance purity in summary. Again, leave as it's so there's a drop down here. You can just have the high quality print for creating a pdf that you're gonna upload traditionally with Expert, you might get some oversight text on pages. If some text boxes full page. Well, I'm going to push OK and, of course, pull up that PdF that went straight to the desktop. So it's still exporting right now, a little too early, right away. But you want to pull up that PDS and make sure everything looks the way you want it. Teoh. This should also be part of your editing process. But to make sure you have your final pdf, you can even see up. Now it's coming image, and it says it's 17 and megabytes. What what time? So I go into that and scroll through to see you go to view in each display you could to page swelling. I also see that my cover page isn't showing so each, despite joke over Beijing techniques you so you can see it. Just hide in a design and scroll through. Sure, everything looks like there's no outlines. The photos where you don't want outlines on them. The photos do bleed off. Want to lead? I want it to. That's pretty easy to create just to print PdF for digital use. If you're going to send this to the printer, there's a couple other steps you want todo so again having your file set up. Remember here. If you want full lead images, you must have an eighth of an inch lead on the outside pages, assuming that the center here would be bound in the spine. Also, talk to your printer and see what they recommend. Typically, eighth inch in the United States is standard to the industry and look file export as if you're gonna go print something really similar, and I'm going to call this for intent. So again, Adobe pdf print and pushed Save before you push expert. You are going to change a couple of these options. So in general, click the little toggle their own to pdf X dash won a 2001 then go into marks and believes . Rather than using all of the printer marks you're you use crop marks offset. I usually put to eat spinach and use my document lead settings. The big fish expert. You have the same warning about the offset text. I'll check that expert in pdf to make sure. Okay, so far it zero bytes. So it's still exporting. And in just a moment I can look at that right now. This document is not set up from full bleed, so it's not one have us that we're just going all the way out. However, it will have the crop marks and some important bets for the print Joe to use. It's really important. Wouldn't actually create a politician books that are printed that you were talking with your printer and figuring out what kind of file they prefer, what types of printer marks that they also prefer. I have been really closely with, and they like just the crop marks because that goes into the bleed marks. Where to cut it on their machines to make it really crisp and find it. If I go under, do you page display and then you can see I have all these little marks. At the moment, it is seems current works are rate to the image. Is this in visual believing across an eighth of an inch, these crop marks are going through the little corners of the image, so that's always safe. Not to have a little white slippers on the edge, all human. And there may be a small errors. So again you have that idea. What I'd say. It's still going to read this. Getting to be a document on your desktop. This one is a lot larger 25 megabytes in comparison to 17.5. Hopefully, that gives you a start to portfolio, and I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone's projects in process. Please read through the description include whatever images you would like. However, many spreads may be great to see at least one portfolio spread and some of that story boarding process and what types of layouts.
