1. Welcome to Plain Writing 2 !: welcome to playing. Writing. This is Oro Conjour. I've been a Fortune 100 technical writer since 1998. I worked for companies like ADP, Fannie Mae and Honeywell. None of which, of course, is responsible for the content of discourse. I've been a writer, editor and publisher since 1985. During the nineties, I also worked as a journalist covering US State Department and U. S Congress in Washington, D. C. The goal of this course is to show you how to write plain sentences that are easy to understand. Easy to act on and easy to remember. We'll help you cut through bad English. The intended audience for this course is all English speakers and writers. This course will teach you many tips and techniques off plain writing and provide exercises with solutions to help you learn by doing it. There's an increasing need today for simple, clear on ambiguous plain English. Increase your chances of success at work and at home by learning how to write flame. Today is the first day off the rest of your life. Someone said so start learning today. Please jump on to the first video to start the course. Good luck 2. PW Noun Trains: avoid known trains for playing writing. Here's a nightmare situation. Draft quality control team Operation Regulation procedures. A perfect known train. Unfortunately, the problem is again this big, unbelievable, non trained draft quality control team Operation Regulation procedures. It's a mouthful. The solution is finding the hidden verb into in this non train, which is in this case to regulate rewrite sentence by using the hidden verb draft procedures to regulate the operation off the quality control team. Isn't it much better now? Here is the before and after comparison. He was the second example. Peripheral device Voltage Monitor control panel. What does this mean? Not clear? The solution is to find the hidden verb, which is to monitor rewrite the sentence by using the hidden verb control panel to monitor the voltage off peripheral devices. It's clear now just compare peripheral device Voltage Monitor Control Panel Verses control panel to monitor the voltage off peripheral devices. There's an exercise that goes with this lesson. Rewrite the three sentences in the file exercise known trains attached to this. Listen by finding the hidden verb and then rewriting this sentence accordingly. Compare your result with the solution suggested in the file solution now on trains, which is also attached to this lesson. This is the end of this lesson. Please move on to the next video. Thank you. 3. PW Opposite Meanings: avoid fashionable words with opposite meanings. For example, transparent. The building's security chip will be transparent to the passport holder here, the transparent means invisible, but the benefits off the built in security chip is transparent to the engineers who designed it here, transparent means clear. Obvious. Here is another three keyboard scan. I was late for work, so I just scanned my email here. Scan means to read casually, but the defense lawyers scanned did the position for any sign of trouble. Here. Scan means to read carefully, just the opposite. How about oversight? I apologize. That was an oversight on my part Here. It means failure to notice. But she is the chairwoman off House Oversight Committee here. It means careful overview sanction. He was sanctioned by FIFA for using steroids here it means to punish, but there's a second meaning off sanctions. Second usage, as in the Central Command, has sanctioned to use off deadly force in war here, it means to authorize to support. So we really need to be very careful in plain writing to stay away from such tricky words that may have just the opposite meanings in different sentences. Scream, they screamed the new movie last night, your screen means to show. But in the following sentence he screamed the ball with his body and and this is a common term in basketball, for example, screening the ball here, it means the height just the opposite off to show you have reached the end of this lesson. Please move onto the next one. 4. PW Eliminate Phrasal Verbs: eliminate phrase Alvar verbs these days, a lot of books and articles and documents. Our old translated into other languages. And unfortunately, some English words and phrases do not have corresponding equivalents in other languages, and thus they are almost impossible to translate correctly. Fraser verbs, for example, are hard to translate. Fraser verbs are multi word verbs made by adding a proposition to irregular verbs. Like to start off to run into the hook up to fall back on, to lay down, to sum up, to shoot down, to read up on etcetera, etcetera. It's really a very long list. Replace such multi word verbs with their single words. Synonyms. That's a good technique off plain writing. Here are some examples to shut off Shut off the engine. Instead, we can say Stop the engine to fall back on. In an emergency, you can fall back on the rapid call system. You can instead say in an emergency, you can use the rapid call system. Granted, the's synonyms do not have the same richness depth that these phrase Alvar verbs have. But in terms of translation and in terms off your international audience, understanding what the sentence is saying it is always a safe bet to replace such Fraser verbs with their single word counterparts to blow up. If the pressure goes over 100 PS I, the container may blow up. It's equivalent. If the pressure goes over 100 fierce I the container may explode. To lay down, lay down the HR guidelines early during the incorporation process. Established the HR guidelines early during the incorporation process to read up on, read up on the con figuration alternatives before connecting the main unit. Instead, use to research instead of read up on so the sentence becomes research. The configuration alternatives before connecting the main unit to fall off the temperature fell off to 12 F is that we can say the temperature dropped to 12 F. Simply is that to hook up, hook up cable? A. With cable be, we can just say connect instead of hook up, connect cable A. With cable be we haven't exercise for this lesson. Eliminate Fraser verbs in the file exercise. Eliminate Fraser verbs attached to this lesson, comparing a result with the solutions suggested in the file solution. Eliminate phrase allow verbs also attached to this lesson. We have reached the end of this lesson. Please move on to the next one 5. PW Eliminate Redundant Pairs: eliminate redundant pairs for good plain writing. But you're right. What is a redundant pair? A pair off words are redundant if the leading one doesn't change the meaning off the sentence. Here are 10 examples to explain this very simple but effective technique off plain writing . Absolute truth. How many times have we heard this? She was telling the absolute truth. Here, Absolute is redundant. You can just say she was telling the truth and he would still mean the same thing. Another redundant pair. Advanced warning. A warning is always in advance. So that was an advanced warning. Instead, you can just say that was a warning, Carrie the best ever. The sports commentators loved us best ever. It was his best solo ever. Why not just say it was his best solo period? Here's another overworked, redundant pair. Basic fundamentals. It found some fundamental, if anything, is always something basic, isn't it? Before I know the basic fundamentals off the game after I know the fundamentals off the game, I'm sure you heard this still brief summary folks, a summary is always brief. So before she gave a brief summary off the accident after you can just say she gave a summary off the accident. By definition, we know it was the reef circle around. How do you like that one? Can you go around anything without throwing a circle? So before the wolves circled around the lamp after the wolves circled the lamp completely annihilate another redundant fair. Instead of saying the enemy was completely annihilated, he can just say the enemy was in. I delayed in. Our relation means complete destruction and elimination. Ah, yes. This is a very famous one. Could possibly probably you heard this millions of times. Could possibly he could possibly be wrong. Well, why can't we just say he could be wrong? Then that would be the end of another infamous one. Each and every she called each and every number on her list. This is one and the same thing as saying. She called every number on her list period. There's no need for each end. Exact same. How about that one? What a redundant fair. They went to the exact same university. This is the same thing as saying they went to the same university period. You can find a selected list of redundant pairs attached to this lesson for your benefit, but I gotta warn you in advance. It is 19 pages and I don't claim it's complete either. I'm sure if someone looks closely enough, one can find in other 19 pages off redundant pairs. They are all over. Here's an exercise for you. Rewrite the paragraph in the file. Exercise redundant pairs attached to this. Listen by eliminating as many redundant pairs as possible, feel free to compare your results with the solution suggested in the file solution. Redundant pairs also attached to this lesson. Good luck. This is the end of this lesson. Please move onto the next video. 6. PW Split Sentences: split long sentences into short ones. So how does one do that? It's simple. Split your sentences at conjunctions like and or while. However. Although etcetera, I'll show you how. Here is the example off a long and convoluted sentence that needs to be simplified by splitting into multiple sentences. The software based flight control system is thoroughly tested in the secure facility F 67 b . While that's your first split right there, the aircraft itself is tested repeatedly in the air by does the second split being exposed to weather conditions specified in dark, 34 B, Dash five and and other split using Cran Bolton methodology split despite the fact that no amount of testing can prepare for all eventualities to arise in real life conditions. Now let's see how we can split this into multiple sentences. Here is the first sentence all the way to a while and no more. The software based flight control system is thoroughly tested in the Secure Facility F 67 Dash B period. The second sentence targets the words between while and despite that's the third conjunction. It just depends on the way the whole sentence is structured. But for our illustration purposes here. We picked up that section and re worded it so that we have the second sentence. The aircraft itself is tested repeatedly in the air by using Cran Bolton methodology for our third sentence. We're concentrating on the content between the conjunction while and the second conjunction . And now we want to talk about the document 34 b dash five. So our new sentence becomes. During these tests, the aircraft is exposed to weather conditions specified in dock 34 b dash five and here is the last one. However, no amount of testing can, of course, prepare us for all real life emergencies and we leave it there. So one sentence is split into four shorter and much more understandable sentences. So here is the full before after picture. The result is this new paragraph made up of four different sentences. The software based flight control system is thoroughly tested in the secure facility. Have 67 dash p. The aircraft itself is tested repeatedly in the air by using Cran Bolton methodology. During these tests, the aircraft is exposed The weather conditions specified in dark 34 b tash five, however, no amount of testing can, of course, prepare us for all real life emergencies. Isn't this much better to read? Understand? And remember, then the software based flight control system is thoroughly tested in the secure Facility F 67 Dash B, while the aircraft itself is tested repeatedly in the air by being exposed to weather conditions specified in doctor forbid as five and using caramel to methodology despite the fact that etcetera, etcetera. Here's another example. The function off the local oscillators stages to produce a constant amplitude sine wave off a frequency which differs from the desired station frequency by an amount equal to the intermediate frequency off the receiver. It's not easy to understand this sentence, mainly because off the way it's structured, we need to split this into multiple and much more simple sentences. Here is the 1st 1 The function off the local oscillator stage is to produce a constant amplitude sine wave period. Just leave it there. And here is the second sentence. The difference between the frequency off this wave and that off the desire station is equal to the intermediate frequency off the receiver. Isn't it much better now? So here is the finished work. The function off the local oscillator stage is to produce a constant amplitude sine wave. The difference between the frequency off this wave and that off the desired station is equal to the intermediate frequency Off the receiver period. We have reached the end of this lesson.
