Project Description

How to do Pixel Art: Basics!

ASSIGNMENT

Create your very own pixel art sprite from start to finish! By the end of this step-by-step guide you'll have a finalized, animated .gif of your pixel art sprite ready to be uploaded and shared with the world!

 Like this lil' guy:

CLASS STRUCTURE:

  • Class 1: What is pixel art? What styles exist and which one fits me? What are the basic rules of pixel art? How do I set up Photoshop for pixel art?
  • Class 2: How do I sketch pixel art? How do I make proper line art for pixel art? How do I color pixel art & how do I apply shading to it?
  • Class 3: How do I animate pixel art? How do I use frames & ghosting to create a lifelike sprite? How do I save it out so I can share it online?

TIPS:

  • Pick your style and stick to it! Make sure not to mix between the three too much or you might lose consistency in your art work!
  • Make sure to set up Photoshop as instructed, it will be a life saver for you!
  • I'm a big fan of symmetry and hone down on that several times in the video. But you don't need to follow my example there! Asymmetry can be beautiful too.
  • Have your hands ready to repeat the same keystrokes over and over again! Holding shift for straight lines is invaluable and undo/redo will become your best friends.
  • Make sure to save your document as a .psd & a gif so we can see it!

RESOURCES:

  • Photoshop, any from the Creative Suite will do.

DELIVERABLE

Upload your completed .gif you made from this tutorial! I'll make sure to take a look at all of them!

Follow this tutorial closely and eventually you'll be able to make things like this:
