1. Introduction: Hi, My name is Linda Matthews, and welcome to photo are defects in this series of classes sharing creative techniques for turning your photographs into photo wired and works of digital art. In this particular class, I'll be showing you had to create a digital photo art image by combining several photographs and texture images in photo shop, using blending modes and layer masks. I've included a scent of project fans, including photos and texture images that you can download and use to follow along with the tutorial and make the same designers I do. If you follow along, I'll show you step by step. How to go from this to this. Or you can use your own images to create something totally unique for you. I hope you enjoy learning how to work with these creative techniques to make beautiful photo. Aren't 2. How to set up Floating Windows: by default images. Openers docked tabs on the editing screen. However, I prefer to use floating windows, which allows you to easily move and reposition images on the workspace when creating photo art. I often work with multiple images at a time, so I find that using floating windows is a much easier way to copy and paste and drag images from one place to another. If your image is currently openers tabs on the editing screen, there are several different ways that you can change them to. Floating windows are the temporarily or permanently. You can temporarily change to floating windows by clicking on the image tab and dragging it from the dock. Or you can go to the main menu and select window. Arrange floating window for a single image will float all in windows to float the mall. You can also change this setting permanently said that any documents you open will automatically float for windows. Choose edit preferences workspace awful Mac. Choose Photoshopped preferences workspace, then de select open documents as tabs. You can also select or de select enable floating document window docking when checked. This setting allows you to dock the floating windows as a tab if you want to. When de selected, you won't be able to dock the windows at all. You can also make sure that the window frame resize is when zooming for windows. Choose edit preferences tools or for Mac. Choose photo shop preferences tools, then check zoom. Resize is windows known. You consume in and out using keyboard shortcuts. Control plus for Windows or command Plus for Mac to zoom in and control minus for Windows or command minus for Mac. Just amount and the window frame will resize automatically, as you assume you will then need to restart photo shop for these preferences to take effect . 3. Blending the First Layer: will begin creating the photo at image by first stacking and blending the main image with some texture layers to create a grunge style background. They can you document 1000 pixels wide by 700 pixels, high by 72 pp. I with a white background. This is a working document. Name this file field of flowers and save it to disk top is a PST file. Saving the file. Using the PSD format will keep the layers intact and allow you to wait at the file whenever you like. It's recommended that you save the file regularly as you progress through the tutorial. Open the file flowers, not jpg, and place the image on the working document to place the image on the working document. Use keyboard shortcut controlling for Windows or command A for Mac To select the image control, see for Windows or command. See for Mac to copy it and click on the working document and use control V for Windows or command FIFA Mac to paste it. Or you can simply drag the image out of its frame and onto the document using your mouse. Reposition the image if necessary, and make sure that it sits evenly inside the frame area, then click on the background layer and drag it into the trash bin because we don't need it named the layer flowers, we'll work on the background first by adding layers of texture and color. This sets the overall mood for the photo art. Open the file Green texture. Dajae PG and place it on the working document named Talia Greene Texture. And make sure that this image is on the layer about flowers. Click on the green texture later highlighted, then from the blending modes menu on the layers panel. Select overlay. After changing the blending mode to overlay, you'll notice that the pink flowers of visible underneath the green texture layer. You could also experiment with other different blending modes to see how they change the overall look of Thean Midge. There's really no right or wrong blending mode. Simply choose the one that works best for the image that you're using now. Drank the flowers layer so that it's on the layer above the green texture layer, with the flowers layer highlighted from the blending modes menu. Select overlay. You'll notice that there's a difference in the background texture, depending on whether the green texture layer is above or below the flowers layout. I think it looks better with the texture below. 4. Blending Additional Layers: now it's and some depth to the background by adding additional ways of texture in different colors. Open the file red brown texture. Dajae PG and place it on the working document. Moved a layer so that it's on the layer below flowers. If you have trouble moving the layer into position, uncheck the order. Select option on the toolbar. Click on the layer you want to move, and you should be able to move it freely about name of the Leia Red Brown Texture and select overlay from the blending modes menu. The texture looks good, but the color looks a little strong. Change the A pence ity of the red brown texture layer to 30%. The opacity setting office your way to control the strength of color and allows you to soften strong or overpowering elements. You can now see that the background has a reddish tint with some additional texture, which looks good. Open the file brown texture J. P. G and place it on the working document so that it's on the layer below the flower layer. Name. Delia Brown Texture. Change the capacity 20% and select overlay from the Blending modes menu at this point, the background texture is looking good, but it's become a little too dark. One way to lighten the background color is to use a white or light colored texture. Open the file white texture. Dajae PG and place it on the working document so that it's on the layer below flowers named the layer white texture and select soft light from the Blending Modes menu. You can see that this has lightened the background area around the flowers for a final texture layer. We let some scratches open. The file scratches Dajae PG and place it on the working document. Move it so that it's on the layer below flowers and name the layer scratches. Select overlay from the blending modes menu and change the A pass ITI to 45%. You can see that this layer at some soft surface scratches 5. Adding a Background Image: at this point in the design. The background has lovely, deep texture and color but likes any real visual interest. So let's blend another image into the background to make it a little more interesting. Open the file. We'd start jpg and place it on the working document so that it's on the layer above flowers named Galileo. Weeds select overlay from the blending modes menu and change the A pass ITI to 60% while the weeds image does. I had some interest to the overall design. You can also see that some of the weeds overlap on to the main floor image. Unwanted background images can be easily removed using a lay. A mosque using a layer mask allows you to hide parts of an image that you don't want to be seen. It's a nondestructive way to work with images as you're not really removing anything from the image itself, but robber the mask that it's attached to, and it allows you to come back and easily make changes at any time. To begin, highlight the wheat slayer and click the layer mask icon. You can now see a mask on the weeds layer, which is filled with the color white on the last panel. I like the flowers slayer and on the two panel, select the quick selection tool just the size of the quick selection tool to an appropriate size. I've used nine pixels and make sure that add to selection is selected a bit of his ability . You can temporarily hide the other layers by clicking on each of the icons on the layer pallet. Select the main flower by running the quick selection tool around the outline of the flower petals and stem. You can use the shift key and the awful windows or option for Mac keys on your keyboard to temporarily switch between add and subtract modes defined. Tune the selection once the outline of the flowers selected, a new hides the other layers by clicking. Open each of the icons on the layers panel. Click on the weeds, land highlighted, then click on the white mask to select it. You'll know when the mask is selected because there'll be a narrow border around the edge. Make sure blank is selected as the full Corrine color, then click the paint bucket tool on the two panel. When working with Leia masks remember like conceals. What reveals this means that when the lay a mosque or a section of the lay, a mosque is filled with the color black. Everything on the layer it's attached to is hidden on the main document. When it's filled with the color white, you can see everything on the working document. Click inside the selected area of the flower you have now feel. The flowers shape on the mask with the color black, which has hidden the part of the weeds that were over laid onto the flower. You can see the black flowers shaped clearly on the mosque. Do you select the outline of the flower using keyboard shortcut control de for windows or command Defoe make. 6. Enhance the Main Flower Image: you can now see that the photo out images starting to take shape and is now looking good with an interesting and textured background, which is kind of moody. However, the focal point, which is the main flower, is competing with the secondary flower, the one in the background facing away. So we now want to enhance the main flower so that it stands out more on Malaysia's panel. Highlight the flower layer and, using the quick selection tool, select the outline of the main flower with the outline of the flower selected. Use keyboard shortcut control. See for windows or command. See for Mac to copy and control V for windows or command. FIFA Mac to paste This is a copy of the flowers selection as a layer above name milia Single file with the single flower layer highlighted. Select soft light from the blending mode menu. This splints a single flower layer with the main image and gives the flowers stronger Focus , which makes it stand out more 7. Add a Vignette: now, we'll anything yet to bring even more focus onto the flowers. There were lots of different ways to editing yet, and I'll show you two different methods. Method one is done using the Marquis, too. I like the weeds layer and click the creating you layer icon on the loose panel. This is a new blank layer above the wheat slayer. Name the layer thing yet open the color. Pick up clicking on the full ground color and pick up one of the darker colors from the photo ID. Image A fuse color number. 634810 With the vignette layer highlighted. Select the paint bucket tool, then click on the working document and fill it with the color you selected. Select the rectangular marquee tool from the tool panel, said the feather to approximately 50 pixels, although you may need to adjust the size and draw a rectangular shape in the center of the working document. Leaving a white border around the inches with the vignette layer highlighted it. The delete key on your keyboard, which will remove the center of the colored land. Use keyboard shortcut control de for Windows or command D for Mac to de select the selection, set the layer rapacity to 60%. You can see that the ad A ridges, the darkened, which highlights and brings the focus to the flower images in the center. The second method for making a vineyard is done using a blank layer or and a brush. I like the weeds layer and click the creating you layer icon on the latest panel. Besides a new plane player of the Weeds layer, Name the layoff in Yet and Cynthia Pass ITI to 40% use. Keep all chilled cut be to select a brush tool. She's a soft round brush and resize it to 200 pixels. Then select a color. This storm will use black, not begin brushing around the edge of the image until you get the desired effect. If it becomes too, Doc, simply lower the A pass ity 8. Add a Grunge Style Border: to finish the photo art image will add a grungy stall. Border around the edges at a new air at the top and name it border. But the border air highlighted slick. The rectangular marquee tool in the tool panel said the feather to zero and drew a rectangular shape in the center of the image, leaving a narrow border around the edge. Select the paint bucket tool. Select blankets the full ground color and click inside the rectangular shape to fill it with black on the main menu. Select select in verse. This in versus the marquee selection so that the border area surrounding the black rectangle is now selected. Select the paint bucket tool. Select white is the foreground color and quick inside the border area to fill it with white use Keyboard shortcut control de for Windows or command D for Mac to de select the selection from the main menu. Select filter, filter gallery, distort false, Then select the following sittings. Distortion. Five. Smoothness to texture. France stirred, scaling 100%. Then click OK with the border layer highlighted in the layers panel. Select screen from the blend mode struck down box. You can see that the central black area of the border layer has disappeared, leaving only the white out of border area visible from the main menu. Select filter Filter gallery to repeat the last filter used. Do this two or three times until you happy with the result. This will expand the glass effect and further soften the encourages of the border. You may want to adjust the border if it looks too wide To do this, expand the image frame by pulling out the corner with your mouths. Use keep or choke up V to select the move. Tool. Click on the border, lad highlighted, and the bounding books with the little handles will appear around the edge of the document . Use these little handles to adjust the board of frame. It's necessary. You can further modify the border but going back into the filter gallery and selecting other filters, which will give the border completely different appearance. This is the paint daubs filter found in the Artistic Filters menu. I think this is the angled strikes filter found in the Brush Strokes menu 9. Saving the PhotoArt File: As you can see, there are many different options for creating photo watt and many different settings you can use to achieve interesting and creative results when blending photos, textures and other images. Now that your photo ID images completed, make sure to save the file in PST format, which will preserve the layers. This means that you'll be able to open the file later and re edit the image or any of the layers. If you're planning on printing the file or sharing it, you can also save the file and a different formats, such as J. Pig. This will flatten all the layers and make a smaller file size. But with this format, you will no longer be able to work on it or make any modifications to the layers. I hope you enjoy this class and will use these instructions as a starting point to explore your and techniques for creating beautiful photo on
