About This Class

In this class, you will learn how to edit photos that are well exposed but due to light, or position, faces of people are in the shadows.

When you take photos, sometimes due to circumstances, people's faces are in the shadow. In travel photos, this may be due to timing, and location of the sun in relation to the landscape.

You may also not have time to set your camera to get the right settings for example in a party.

With this class, you will be able to salvage photos you think were no good because you can't see the faces of people.

This class is Part 2 of a series where you will learn how to use Lightzone.

Part 1 "Introduction To Lightzone Photo Editor - Photo Editing For Absolute Beginners". The topics in the first class go over downloading, installing, and some basic cropping with Lightzone.

Part 3. Create Breath Taking Landscape with LightZone

Transcripts

1. Introduction - Bringing Faces Out From Shadows: Hi, My name is James and I enjoy for the roughy. If you think for those you recognize the importance off where the light is coming from, where there is coming from the Franz from the side from the top or even backlit. Now, sometimes when you take photos, obviously especially for badly photo you try to use a feeling flesh, but they may be times when you are traveling. Or maybe you handle your camera to someone that you don't have the luxury or setting things properly and you are actually in a rush. You're just stopping there for less than a minute or so, and you had to quickly take a photo or when you have handled your camera to someone and you're free me in such a way. But that person has just changed the framing slightly. And now you have a bright spot in your photo. You could be the son, or he could be a bright light and that, like throw the exposure off your photo off. And now your photo is not correctly exposed, and your face or somebody face is actually in the shadows. So in this class I will show you how you can actually bring up those faces in the shadow and savage does for those that you can't really go back to take because you are lucky Vacation or you're traveling and you won't go back to that place For what? I hope that this class will actually have you to establish your photos. Your memories actually, and help you to. I showed those for those you thought were ruined forever. 2. Editing And Adjusting Contrast: for these exercise. We're gonna use this for two. As you can see, the background of the photo is actually pretty well exposed, whereas the foreground here, the face exactly in the dark in the shadow. And this is because of the location of the sun. And that's a mention. In the earlier video, I mentioned that sometimes when you take a photo, you kind of avoid being in the wrong place in the wrong location. So let's get on over to Andy this for tour. All right, Here you will see the tools. If you have over them, you will see that this is a zone mapper. This is the real like to shop in two, causing blur hue and saturation color ballons, white ballons, black and white noise reduction clone as well. A sport in this exercise. Let's head on a word to take a look at the history, Graham. And you do that by clicking on the history grand time. So, as you can see from the history Graham, this for two exactly exposed to the right and the accident spots. Over here we shows that for toys were exposed and this is the location. Did you hit on Oh, and click on the zone Tap over here and let's click on ETA Zone Leper, there's a member to Over here is 16 segments That shows the different contrast in a photo Let me just move on and have all my mouth as I go along and you'll notice that there will be yellow highlights in this preview window over there. This will be the brightest sections or wait here as you see in the yellow section, which corresponds to the clocks over the horizon. And here Okay, as I mentioned, Or just leave the sun over here is over, exposed. And as I moved down, you will notice that you will highlight different sections which different contrast or brightness and the doctor sections obviously using the shadows over there. Okay. And at this point in time, this there is actually no other. You look points highlighter, which is actually that you can set this as the dark point and in order to use the road map to head on over here and click on the bar, let me just do that and click on this bar here. Okay, so I've actually set that zone at the moment, and this is a zone lock. And let me explain a little bit about the zone law. And let me just go and click on another zone and not 1/3 1 Each bowel here represents half a stop off exposure in photography. So this is how and if you click to bus, that will be one for stopping photography. Okay, so let me just go and show you this point and high life. And before I do that, let me just add another point just to make it easier to see. As you can see over here as I have with the mouse, these are the points of the highlighter. And keep an eye on the photo here. Right? So what I'm going to do is I'm gonna left click on my mouth and drag these up So you will see that certain portions half 10 like, uh, what happens is this boss Yes. Has been stretched arrested zones where there has been compressed. Let me just go and do that. Okay? Me not, you know, See, you may not see that. Well, let me try this sections and see the media is going to push this up Okay. You see that? Yes, Actually, given the clock, sir. Lighter color. If I were to show the original. This is the original photo. And this has been the slightly up data. When with the zone Knepper. So what happens is that zone the juniper to has compressed the contrast with the sections. And while he has stretched its over there, if I were to set at that point or a black point in the photo, I can click there and pull it down so you can actually send your photos brightness by setting zones over there. Now, these will never to at this point in time is actually affecting the entire photo. All right, let me just go and check all of this. Okay? So this is the original photo. Now, if I would to raise the contrast a little bit by setting one here and just pushing the entire bars off you notice that the face have lighten up a little bit as compared to the original. OK, but still not that good. And if you can continue to do that, what happens is the brighter part of the photos will start to get to a bright so if you set a lock, then you will prevent this. Like the section from getting too bright. Okay, let me just set a long day. So you actually maintaining the contrast for this region? So this is actually the basic off the zone mapper to in the next video, I will show you how to selectively apply this on the face over there. So that's going to just leave it as this. And I think this is actually a little bit too much. Although I may be pushing the photo a little bit just so that you can see on the video, right? You may not show up the same on your computer just because your computer screen maybe displaying the colors and the brightness a little bit differently. 3. Editing A Selected Section Of Your Photo: you can actually apply several zone EPA tools at the same time. Okay, so I'm going to minimize the first zone. And this whole mapper Tudor's own apple number one actually is having a global or affecting the entire photo. So let's add another zone EPA, too. And this will be his own EPA number two. Now I'm going to at the mosque and by clicking on this region more and you can actually select three different types of region where the polygon supplying regions or busy regions for ah, face on for body like this, I found that he works best with the spying region. So what you need to do now is to move your mouth or what to the photo here, and you can see the cross and a dog. So what you need to do is to click on using the left mouse button and to select the region . No worry about this, because you can actually move the region's later on and adjust it after us like that. The region So I'm just going to trace around, showed over here all right, on the debate, the wood there. So I'm not to concern. And for the purpose of this exercise, I am just going to do a rough one. You can actually do this as close to the shadows or the point that you lie so that you can create a photo that is realistic rather than making it look a little bit too fake. And once you have done your rightly on your mouse button and finish off your last point, okay, and in order to adjust this region, you can have over the button here you left your mouse and use your left mouse button to move the point right. I've just moved this point. I can also, unless they move this point as well. And let's zoom in to see whether the math fits properly. Just double click on the region and region will come up again. The inner lining is actually the feathering to right, so that gives the transition between the light and the dark Deressa feather right, rather than having a hot each. Okay, so that your lying is like that. You will be fed it mawr gently, and if you move the two lines together, then it becomes harder age. Let me move this part of our being So now let's start adjusting this powder image. I'm just going to move down. And as before, I'm going to just at a zone lock here and create. That is a lot over there and another one to correspond. Toe, you start with the exposure and this gives me a little be more control so I can see the right. The face and the shoulder is like e there. And the four hits right, based on the highlight that parts. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna add another point there, and the first thing I'm going to do is to move this up a bit to see this better. I can right click on the region and hide the region and let me try by moving this part. So individual photos were any individual treatments. It won't be a one size fits all solution. The doctors points to some very day. Let me just pull this up a bit. Okay? So let me just hide this part. Okay? So this mark here this this check might hear if you're disable it so that this zone Napa isn't having any effect at the moment. And when you enable it you can see the effect there. Okay, So let me just show you the original, right? The originals day and this sister for what has been edited. Okay, let me just go in and check both so that you can see the original photo. This is original photo. And this is the effect on the mass in his own EPA number two. Okay. And in conjunction together with the 1st 1 the photo looks so much better as compared to the original. So that's how we bring out a person's face from the shadows and make it visible with the rest off the photo. 4. Class Project: Okay, Once you are done, just click on the done button and light zone will save your photo as the project in this class. What I would like you to do is to take two photos side by side before and after photo. To show that you have actually applied the like zone a zone mapper to and improve your photos. I hope they be this class. Some of the photos that were taken with the person in the wrong positions in the shadows. You will be able to make some improve months on those, especially for those whereby it is impossible to redo the four door in certain vacations. But days or celebrations, your guests or the person is in the shadows.
