1. 01 trailer: Hi, if you are designing a product or a piece of jewelry, or you are an architect, you are probably dealing with paternal, and this lesson is probably for you. And in this class you're going to learn how to create your tile pattern and apply it to any surface. I prepared you the class with three different difficulty levels plus a bonus one, which is how to make Rhino more beautiful. And as our first approach or we're going to create our tile elements. We will then begin with the easiest level of difficulty and we will flow our tile pattern into our cylinder surface. As a second exercise, we will apply the pattern to a double curvature surface. And lastly, the most interesting exerciser is one, we will distribute the Tyler into the more complexes surface, a poly surface. And you will see how I will break down their thought process. So far for this class, you just need to the basic SIR understanding of rhino serosa. And after this class, you will be able to fluently apply the Partner Center to any surface by learning from the best practice. So good luck with your learning and see you in my class. 2. Bonus - Make Rhino beautiful - Free Plugin: Hi, In this lesson before to dive into the patterns, if you're curious, I0 will go into show you how to create these standing graphics in Rhinoceros. The name of the plugin that allows these are called oxpecker. The link is down below in the description so you can download it. It's free. I use this plugin just to get an overview or a better feeling of materials. So inside rhinoceros is just more beautiful and there is not that heavy. So that's why it's a nice, it's a nice to have inside your rhinoceros tools. So as you can, super easy to change materials and colors, just a few clicks and you can find what you need. If you also like the way I set it up, rhino thicknesses of the line CRM, I did He High DOD ISO curves and also detect faces have their own colors. So you can actually see what's the front and the back. So if you're interested and you want to see how I did the creator or my view styles and everything. Let's go ahead and let's start with the installation of the plugin oxpecker. You can first to download the plugin in the resources of these, the exact color. So let's go ahead. So after you download it, you can go in Rhino, you click the gear icon and then you will go under plugin and you will start the installation like I'm doing. I used to invoke or call the plug-in and just by typing oxpecker on the research tab. Notice that if we are on the standard view for Rhino, you want to be able to see any material changes. So if we want to see, we need to activate the rendered view. Okay, now we are going to change also the other layout stylers, settings. You can just copy my settings if you like, or change it and make it your own. They are very simple. So to do the changes that you need to go to the display panel and then you are able to click the button below, which is Editor under settings. These settings, you can change everything in Rhino, but we will focus Justin some small details. And as you can see, all the changes I did are in purple color. In this way, you can really see what they be changed and you can apply it to yours. Here. I did change the gradient color and I did set it to a darker blue to a whiter color. It helps, uh, you're either to rest when you are modelling and it's, it looks like a real sky. But you can choose your own. It's up to you and your mood of the day. Next step was changing the back face color to an interesting color that pop-out that helps you to identify what is the backside and the front. And especially the normal direction of our phase moving on with the changes on the thickness of a surface. And this helps to identify the edges and border Iter. It helps because if you have either cursor and these are thicker and they're good setting ID the hide, the grid completely. This might not be ideal for you, but I like to work like this. In this lesson you are going to create a modular tile element. And we are going to use it in the next lessons to create our patterns. So if you have already a Tyler, you can skip this lesson. Otherwise you can follow me and we're going to create it step-by-step. And you can use your creativity. I also assume that you have a basic knowledge of a rhinoceros without further doing, Let's start with the realization of the tile. You will find the pattern in the description. You can download the file and I will reverse engineer the pattern a previously Linda and I will start with the rectangle tool to get there first dimensions. So because we are dealing with concepts, we also want to get rid of this naps temporarily. If you want to match my knapsack, see down below. And if I want to get rid temporarily, snap so I can press the Alt key and I can move free handling the object. So that's pretty cool. I will now create the top part of the paternal with the line tool. And I will press her, ask her to exit from the control points. In this way, I can select the curves I have and I can mirror them. Remember to hold Shift while you are doing these operations or you are more precise and you mirror it exactly on the other axis. Here I'm going to clean all the lines with the trim command. And I will also perform the laughter commander to create all the flat surfaces that generates the pattern. If you quickly want to repeat the command that you just did, you can press the spacebar. So in this case, the loft command doesn't work because we need to break the lines and create a single segments. If you have good memory and you'll remember by arpa the command center, you can always type them. It's much weaker than searching them. Of course, you can even put them in your favorites list. We'll use the laughter and set it as a straight curve CR. And in this case, I also need to straighten the sections by touching the end of the control points so I can flip the curves and create a clean surface. Let's go ahead and laughter. The longer section. As you can see, it's rather because my back face so settings, RRR, red. In this case, while I'm using the gumball IE, press the Control key so I can move it around. And then I can perform a very, very precise movements. And yes, the gamble works like an object. So it works with the snaps. If you're made it so far. Congratulations. So let's find our module using the pattern tool. And the, in this specific pattern, I will set it to five x, five y. And one said, if you do the exact same pattern, I do make sure to be on the same base point when you create the pattern. Once you get the result, you can accept the command. So you can actually create any pattern you want. You can create also whitespace around the holes. You can create a pattern that is going to subtract the solid or the arrival surface. It's really up to you. So in this case, we want to achieve a pattern that tastes terrible in all the directions. So we want also to have the patterns being built in a square shape. So to achieve that, we're going to trim from the top. With our rectangle that I'm going to drop. When you're drawing a rectangle. If you want a square, you just hold shift. And if you want to get rid of the snaps, you hold the Alt key. And now test your pattern after these. This cat is very important because it sets the pattern to be seamless. With the trim tool, we are going to get rid of all the surfaces. After that, we can erase the extra surfaces surrounding the pattern. In your designer, you always want to keep the curves or when you want to create something new. But in this case, I will get rid of my cursor in say, cover, keeping the file clean. So now that we have the basic Tyler, Let's make it a solid. And so I will create a, again, the bounding box. And I will learn create that surface. There are several ways to create solider. I will create the surface and will three meter. So to create the surface, I moved the Campbell down and after that they hold control, as you can see, it creates the surface I need. If I also press out the key, I get rid of this naps so I can eyeball the thickness. In this case, it's a concept. So this is just a way how to achieve these results. In this case, I will now cut the rest of the surfaces and to achieve the solid. So let's get rid of the extrusion partner that we don't want. Okay, Let's trim the extra parts. All right, so let's close up the pop partner with the size by pressing join command. For the top part is completed. And if you want to close the bottom part and creator instantly a solider, you can use the commander and they're solid tool, which is called Kappa planner holes. Achieving a solid is an important step, but if you want to change now the material you can call outs Becker. If you have made it so far, congrats, Let's go ahead and create our first pattern in the next lesson. 4. Ex 1. - Cylinder - Pattern Application: Hi, In this lesson you are going to learn how to create the pattern around these cylindrical shape. It could be a tire, it could be a skyscraper, it could be jewelry element. It's up to you. It depends from what industry you come from. So as we see the previous lesson, we learned how to do the tile. In this lesson we'll learn how to displace the Tyler in surface. And then we will apply these surfaces into our target surface with the flow command. Let's start with the creation of our cylinder and will roughly mimics or the example I have there. You can create your own dimensional, personal, low-dimensional. So let's explore the cylinder and get rid of the surface is that we don't need for this experiment. We now go ahead with flattening down the cylinder surface. And we needed to displace our pattern on top of it. And we're going to use this Masha command. You can use the default settings of this mesh as they are pretty good for the experiment. The results, you will get it close to the origin point, or it depends where you have the origin. In my case, it's far away there. The flat surface from the previous example is also different because the two cylinders are different from each other and it doesn't affect the result in our case. Let's proceed with displacing the Tyler on top of the surface with a pattern. And if you don't have the tile you just downloaded from the resources or you created by following the previous lesson I have. I will now speed up the process of the piling on the flat surface and thinker. You can see how I used it in the previous tutorial. So go ahead check data and make your own pattern and the pilot to the way you want. Okay, you, once you have the pattern down and displaced, we are going to flow it along the surface with flow command. Recommender require us to select the objects to flow, which is in our case the pattern than the surface reference, which is the surface behind us, sorry, under the paternal and the target surface, which is the cylindrical surface. My reference surface is a bit hard to see just under the pattern. And then the target surface. And there we have it. And we'll repeat the command again to make it more clear. And we'll also move the reference surface in a way that you will see very clearly what I'm selecting it. So you will avoid confusion. If you get the reverse of the surface. In this case it goes inside, you need to select another corner of the surface. So in this case, we should have been selecting the higher corner of the surface, flow along the surface, and select the objects. Select de-reference surface. And now select the top part of the surface. So you get to the correct direction of the pattern. And here you have it. As you can see, there is a gap here, which is the same gap of the surface. We just moved before. Flow and surface commander works or parametrically with a record history. So check it out. But let me put back surface where it was. So it's a cleaner result. So let's record the history. So to very, very dynamic and interesting results, you can play around quite much with it. Before to choose the commander, make sure that you have clicked record history. That's very important. Otherwise you don't get the parametric effect. And right now you will see that whatever I will move or whether I move the pattern, whether I move the surface of reference, will change all the changes I can make her. They will be reflected on the pattern at the end. You can experiment and it can also move it around and do these kind of tests depending on the designer you want to achieve. In this case, we also are going to change or modify the surface of the cell in there. And you will see the pattern displaying on the surface automatically without repeating the command that I would suggest you to work with a long geometry pattern at the beginning so you can experiment and all the changes almost in real time. What I like to do now is to use the cage editor commands to modify the cylinder surface and to see how the pattern behaves. So let's now try to twist the cage. Consider result. This could be the beginning of our skyscraper or a complex jewelry pattern in top of marine, for example. Congrats if you reach that pointer. And this is a great achievement for you, I hope, and I hope you also learn something new. In the next lesson, we will deal with more complex surfaces. 5. Ex 2. Double Curvature Pattern Application: Hi, In this lesson, we increase the level of difficulty and we will cope with patterns that flow along surfaces with a double curvature. So stay tuned and let's see what I got for you. As you remember before, you were using this mesh command to flatten the surface. But with double curvature surfaces, this actually doesn't work so well. You get a wobbly effect. So you are going to use a new command. So Dante uses mesh with the complex surfaces. It would be so hard to flatter a pattern on top of it. And these new commander, it's, it's much more simple and it's called the creator UV curves. These new common creates much cleaner results. It gives you the boundary of the surface. Now I'm going actually to show you how I did created the complex surfaces. I started from cursor as always, and here they are. And I will proceed for the surface creation with the sweep two rails command. Once we find the commander, we are going to help by selecting the rails and the cross-section curves. And here we get the result. And we proceed. Now we turn the creation of the flat surface thanks to the UV commander that it's under here. Left-click on Create UV curves. Once you hit enter, you accept the commander. You will get the result close to the origin point. Okay, Let's now rotate it. Now that we have the curves, which is sort of boundary. We can create the surface and we can proceed with the commander create surface from planner curves. And we can go ahead to set the pattern on top of the surface. And in this case I have already the pattern down and so I will use it. By design. I will leave some offset on the sides. So will now copy and place the pattern from the top view. From my tutorials. You see I really like working with the gumball, so I will go ahead and without her, I will duplicate the pattern. If you don't know how to use the gumball, watch the first video in this class. And we'll eyeball a little off-center. And without further doing, let's go ahead with the flow along of surface command and everything. Now it's ready to go on. Select the object you want to flow and press Enter. Select the base surface, which is the surface underneath and ultimately the target surface. If you get this result, which is a flipped version of the pattern, as you can see, the difference from the one above all the steps we did the labor, all correct. But the one thing that we need to modify is the direction of the UV of the surface. You can choose whichever UV to flip are used to flip the UV of the basal surface or whether they think it's actually more clear for this tutorial. You can try to see and let me know if you get a similar result as I have. So if you have my problem, you will need to flip the UVs and so you need to go under the surface types. So you can flip direction. So left-click and you can also click Swap UVs. After that, you hit Enter and you accept recommended, and the job is done. So let's go ahead and flow again the surface to see if something has changed. This is exactly the result we were searching for. So you got the processor how to create it. And if you made it so far congrats, you have gained some piece of knowledge. I really hope so. Ex. 3 Complex Surfaces Pattern Application: Hi, In these more advanced lesson, you are going to flow your pattern in poly surfaces, which is a surface composed by many other pieces. They does lesson as a reference for your projects and products. So if you want to compare your learning between this lesson and the previous one, in the previous one you were doing a flowing along one single surface. In this one, you are flowing objects in policy and the flow Commander doesn't work straight on a poly surface. We are going to transform the poly surface into one surface. There are may ways, commands, and way of thinking how to create a surface from a poly surface, which is what we need. In this case, I will show you my thinking process, and I will also show you how to create a shaper and achieve the result. But it's totally up to you. And a depends about the project you are dealing. For. For this tutorial I choose are pretty much a free form shape, which is a resembling a skyscraper. And let's go with the building of it. I'm showing how to achieve these crazy form. I started from a star-shaped and then I duplicated. And check the second lesson. If you don't know how to use the gumball, I will proceed now with the loft command to generate surface. Okay, There you have it. In this case, the surface is flipped and we are going to reverse it. We also add the fill letter. I think 10 is too much. I think 60 might be good. Again, this is up to you and up to your preferences. Now we can twister the shape using the cage editor command. So in this case, choose bounding box, then C plane. And in this case the number of points are actually already could. And I will select the higher sets of points and procedure with the rotation. And there we have it. So as you notice in this situation, we need to operate the flow command and we need to create our single surface. I will duplicate the object, and I will also isolate my selection by hiding all the rest of the objects. Right now I'm going to need the cursor and get the top curves. I duplicate the borders. And these processes really depends on the poly surface you are dealing with. I also need to duplicate the two cider at Jesus. I also need a section curve in the middle of the shape. So let's go to the side view. I will roughly get the half of my shaper. These processes depends on your surface and the level of precision that you want to achieve. And in this case, I'm going quick for the toilet demonstrations. So I'm projecting these curves to remain poly surface. So far we created the curves. We need to generate our single surface. And let's move on by selecting curves we have. So select all the curves except the vertical ones because we're going to do a sweep later. And the, lets us simplify them. I0 choose the delete inputs are, but I don't suggest these for you as you might want to keep the original ones. These two commands, sometimes they can be similar, but they are different and you can actually experiment. The one you feel is best for you. Always check at the end of the points if you got the results you expected. So let's hide here the surface. And let's check all the control points together. And if they make sensor. After these, we can finally go ahead with the sweep two rails command. This can be our arrival surface, and it looks pretty nice. And you compare it to actually match in the best way possible to the previous one. And in this case it's pretty close. And at the end of the day you just want to flow the pattern on top. This is just a servant surface. And moving on with the flowing, we just need to flatten this single surface we just created. And let's move on by doing that with the creator curves or UV, or create UV curve, which we learned in a previous lesson and likes mesh Commander. The create a UV curves commander will generate the results in the origin point. I did already pre-made my paternal from the previous tutorial. And I am going to set it on top of the surface. So now everything is set to go ahead with the flow along surface commander. Depending on the pattern you have, it may be as lower quicker process. In this case as you see, we got the pattern inside the unexpected, but are interesting and nice result. In any case is not what we want and we want it outside the pattern. And let's perform the command again. And the trick is to select the target surface or in a different spot. In these case, I will click an insider the surface, the target surface. Exactly insider.
