Welcome to this Weekly Painting Project. This week you'll learn how to paint an Evening Scene At The Backwater of a damĀ using gouache colors!

In this class, I'll introduce you to my M3 process of painting which I developed to teach painting to beginner and intermediate level artists. In this method, I breakdown and simplify the painting process into 3 simple steps, we use just 3 colors plus white and just 3 brushes to complete the painting.

1. Introduction: Welcome to the plus Voss landscape painting Backwater Evening. Very relearned to paint this landscape. Painting with M three matter using wash colors. My name is Amanda Muraki. I'm an artist, and I've thought over 11,000 students through my studio workshops and online courses like these, I will be leading you through this course. Wash medium is very similar to water color, but with an important addition off opaque white color. This makes it easy even for beginners to get great wizards. If you have used any OPEC medium like acrylics or oils, wash can produce very similar results. But with the convenience off watercolor M three metal of painting it want from my eating Over the last many years, it breaks down the painting process in tow, three steps off composition, blocking on detail, which even beginners can follow and pain confidently. No further simplify things. We just use three colors and less than three brushes for the entire painting. This class clearly shows these three steps and also gives you the reference photo for you to use and paint based on it. Backwater Evening - Step 1 - Composition: Welcome to this week's painting project. As you know we do, a weekly painting project in which we take a reference photo on Develop a painting based on that on for these spendings, we always use em three matter of painting. This metal of painting involves three steps, three colors and three brushes. The three steps involved are composition, blocking and be dates, and we'll be going through these steps one by one as we progress in this painting project and I'll show you. The colors and three process, which I use in the next part, are in the next step off blocking, where we actually start using the colors. So in this step off composition, I'll be using this photograph, which I clicked near Moose Adam, and I'll be using that as a reference for my two days painting. So, as you can see, this is, ah, long short taken from ah restaurant or are for tell where we went for Ah snack that evening on. This is the back quarter off the motion, Adam on, and I'll be focusing on this part of the scene and using this to build painting our builder composition in this format for this project. I'll be using this longer rectangle because I want to capture a lot off this part off the scene. So let's start. I want the horizon line somewhere here and I'll be using these mountains shapes. I want this mountain Chief Toby like this and this is the headland which comes forward here . So I'll be taking that in then. I This is the closest part of the land, which I can see on that also will end somewhere here. Andi, that's a mountain like this. I'm not going into the details of these ships, but there is very little difference in vertical between these two headlands because we're looking at them from such a long distance. And this mountain goes up like this. I don't want these lines to mimic each other. They're not copies off each other. Then there is a mountain which goes up like this and it in somewhere here and in the system Farthest mountain, which the scene has. I don't want to copy the shape of the mountain exactly. And I just want o take a clue from them and basically that's the whole seen captured in just a few lines and The whole painting will be based on ideal perspective in which this mountain will be the darkest and as the distance increases, these mountains will become lighter and bluer in color. In a way, this is a very simple competition, but I like the shapes of the mountains in him. Hence, I'm making a painting based on that and there is a suggestion off human settlement here because we can see some smoke coming up from this area. So I might want to introduce that at the later stage, depending on how we progress. So there'll be some trees here on a suggestion off trees, and this water will have some reflections. That's basically the competition, and the sky will be lighter here. And as we go towards this corner, it will be getting darker. And Doug so see you in the next step where we will lock in this shapes on the actual preach or actual paper, which I'm going to use and then block in the main colors thing 3. Backwater Evening - Step 2 - Block In: welcome to the step Number two are the block in step. This is the competition between did in the first step and now I'll be drawing this on this paper before that, Let me explain the materials or the supplies which I'm going to use. I'm going to use only three colors plus white. This is our drama in blue. This is chrome yellow. This is burnt Sienna on this is Chinese white or died a nationwide on these are watercolors But because I'm using OPEC wiped in these colors, we call this go wash. You can use pure glass colors also or you can use oil colors or accurately colors. But the steps off the painting will remain the same because all these mediums are used in the or pick phone. And for the painting, I'm going to use only these two brushes. This is ah, size number 12 flat brush on. This is ah, small regard kind of brush, which is six numbers. So let me start by drawing this she off the mountains on this paper using this brush and Tyne blue color. So here is going to be the line of the water and this is the first hit land. This is the second, then next Monday is this which is the only one which we see on the left hand side. Then this amount in which goes up like this and the last one is something like this. That's it. There's nothing much under. There are no complex shapes in this spending, so I'll be starting with the lightest and come to the darkest. This is actually going to repeal how we paint in OPEC mediums, but then these shapes are very much separate from each other. There is nothing much which is overlapping, so it doesn't matter actually how you paint. But since we are going from light or dark, which is a typical off watercolor medium, I'm going to stick to that. But you could also choose to paint dark and go back towards the light. I want this side off the sky to be having more light, and this way or decide will be darker. So I'll start with a yellowish white yellowish color and go on introducing blue, who was this side and towards the top. So let me take some yellow and I don't want this yellow Toby used here so I'm going to make it into, ah, yellow car, something like this. Very light yellow color. And let's see how this looks on this friending seems so good to me. So it's applying this. I'm overlapping the mountain shape slightly because that way I won't have any sharp. It just are any white paper showing through now? We'll start in losing blew into it, and I have some blue in it and see how I am applying. I'm not. There is no value change between these two colors, but there is a change in the color, some more blue in some water and some more blue for the most part of the sky in this painting and toward this side. Also, it will have more blue area because the sun is setting somewhere on this side. So that's pretty much the sky ADF entered. I want to still much these layers off colors in tow. I'm more grated way, so I'm going to use a middle color between these two and over Levitt so that the transition is very smooth. This is the advantage off using or pick colors. You can go on correcting, and you can have better gradations and you can do final adjustments when you use your big white. We can come back to the sky if required in the next step. But for now, I'm goingto call it done. At least at this stage, let me have some color here. Okay, now let's come toe the lightest mountain, and the color is more going to be more blue. Hence I'm adding blue to the already existing color. Make sure and I guess this is one to be to bright, but let's test it and see how it looks. Yes, it is school high chroma. I'm going toe slightly. Bring it. Bring down its chroma by adding this brown. Bringing down chroma means you make it slightly great and I wanted to be more or pick and some adding right. But now again, I'll have to adjust its color by adding some more blue and some more brown. I'm going to apply this to the whole mountain or living is ill. Make it slightly darker as I go towards this side, - and I'm dragging that dress on this idea also because I don't want any sharp cuts. Now I'm going toe paint this and this will be even more darker and it will be slightly more greenish. I'm going to add some more or some amount of blue in it. So first this system action which we didn't earlier blue and burnt Sienna and I'm going to add some amount off yellow. Do it. This is true green. I'm going to make it more bluish. And let's see how this looks. I don't want this jump to be very certain. So this is too dark someone to add some light or some white and good and some more blue. Let's see how this looks. Yes, this looks better. So I'm going to apply this to the whole mountain. Only thing is, I'll make it slightly darker towards this side. Hey, when I printed this moment and I make me very dark at the side because I started this mountain from this side, I'm going to make it lighter. When I come here, we're living, which I want to maintain is the That should be enough off value difference between these two, and so I'm going to make it slightly more that and as you can see, even though this is water color, I'm using it very thick. And that's the way how washes used no coming toe. This mountain, this mountain is going to be even more darker and slightly more greenish. Then this one Let's see how this looks. This looks OK. Can go a bit dark. Yeah, this looks bigger. And I know that I'm not following the initial line off mountain or initial shape of the mountain, which I had drawn. But as long as there is variation and they all don't look the same, I'm okay with it. Because anyway, I'm using the photo as just a reference and, I don't know, copy it. Exactly. Now I'm going to come to this mountain or let me first do this, which is slightly lighter than this one. So let me have some Whitewood and let's I mean this. I want this to be slightly darker than this color. And so let me add some blue in it on being it has to be slight change in value on I think I'm okay with it on DNO. Let's build this one, which is the darkest in this and it's the most. It has a lot off ground or actual soil with which is seen so I'm going to make it more brown. Let's just discolor. You know, this looks cool. I don't want this color, Toby. Too bright, because this is an evening scene, and hence there would be a lot off light on the land. This is very the mountain or the hill meets the wanted. I'm using this lighter color GIs and some places toe add some picture. And for this I need ah, darker color. Maybe even more greenish. But not such a Brian Greene. I wanted to be. Ah, narc. Onus Green, More off born sienna. This looks good. So let me see how this looks here on dime at the same time, I'm suggesting some trees here on this slope off the mountain and some please. Here. I want to make it even more dark on in this part of the world. You don't find these qualifers, so I'm going toe paint histories link the ardor. They're not there. Evergreen forests, They're not twentyfold. Switch shared there leaves during winter. These are evergreen forests. Now, what remains to be painted is the water. Andi, As you might have seen, the water is lighter towards the horizon or towards this point and it gets darker. As we come towards us. Someone does start with the blue again. This blue color off the water is not going to be pure blue. It's going to be gray blue because off the time off, the the let's start with this color and let's and just as regal. So I want this edge to be shot because it's not age of the water, and I don't want any undulations in that. And let's now bring it. Bring it down here. See, I'm using this big brush, but only the tip off the brush. As I bring it towards me, I'm going to make it darker, so even this dark color will do. Let me make it slightly darker in some areas on even more dark as I approach the bottom edge and I'm using very best brushstrokes because I'm painting water and decide what I will be even darker because this area removed receives less amount of life. So I'm going to use our darker color slate water to make the pain flu, and I think I'm done with the second step in which I have laid down colors for all the shapes on in the third step, our details. But for that I'll allow this colors too right, and then come in with more details to the pending. So see you in the step number three. 4. Backwater Evening - Step 3 - Details: so we'll come back. You're starting with the step number three in which we are details to all the shapes. Onda, As I had said earlier, I not paid a lot of attention toe the shapes of the mountains, but I can do that now. You can see there is a peek here, which I want to add in just to give more character though, mountain someone to use existing colors. And let's try if I can match this color so I'm using this time are smaller brush because I want to paint on the certain media. So I'm going toe are that peak here and I want to merge it into the existing shape off the mont. Um so I'm grating the color. I think that adds a little bit off character to the mountain. And it's not just any mountain. It's specifically this mountain now. I also want to wear just the sky to some extent, and for that I use be good brush and I want this guy to be more pick here. So I'm going Toe makes on these colors because these that this is where the these are the colors which were used in the sky among makes more of Ludwig because it's going to be the top of the sky as far as this spending is concerned. And I also want to make that color thick. I heard more blue and let's see how this looks when we applied. Yeah, I'm starting with the top of the sky and as I come down, makes more off this color on make it lighter so that I can merge it nicely into the color below Someone we use this brush like this I'm doing all this just to meet the sky more pick And now I'm using Dr Rush. Just tow months this color in the on the line yellow and I think I'm happy with the be the sky looks now. Now I'm gonna go just this color again and this time I'm going I'm going to use the smaller brush because when I painted the sky, it did change some off this on it affected this mountain To some extent I'm going to use this color against overlap. Let me try using the bigger one only because that gives me more control or it can lean lot off color. Let's see on this looks here and in the second court or in the second layer of the painting , which I'm doing right now. You don't need to cover the whole surface again. You just need toe. I had a colored some places and it creates this nice effect. Oh, at some places, the color remains translucent somewhere it chose the background color. The earlier layer of the color on it adds interest. And in this mountain I want to add some off this light color off some earth showing on some ground showing. So I'm going to make a slightly brownish color brownish blue. And let's see how this looks at some place. Yeah, this looks good. I don't want to change the value so much. What? I just wanted to add some variation in color. Otherwise it looked like ah, Kadak returned in one. So now I actually am not reporting the photograph at all. I'm no painting this painting, just as if I'm making up the shapes of the moment. And that's perfectly fine, because you should not be a slave to the reference. But you should use it on legal. You were at wanted. You're just as ah jumping off point otherwise you end up creating photographic looking painting. I'm okay a bit. This shape. Right now we're living. I know this is that the line off the water is not perfectly or Rundell and which needs and Justman. So I'm going to use this color on very closely. See where the mountain line or where the line off the water should be, or it should be perfectly horizontal. And I'm using a tick color because I want to cover some off the portion off the mountain. - This is a very important thing when you paint water that the lines line off the order where the water meets the horizon line has to be perfectly horizontal. I'm using this light color now just to create some lighted areas in the water. And I'm using the pink very thick. The brushes on most trying Onda had some details to this ship off the mountain. Yes, To make it slightly more interesting, I'm creating our darker, darker blue. You can see how all the colors in this painting are very close to each other. This painting is all about values and not exactly about colors. This variation, or some details here, will add some interest to this point. - Andi , though I had drawn some smoke here, I'm really thinking about that. I should be adding any of that here. I don't know whether that will hard, though, beauty off the painting or it'll take away. So I'm still thinking whether I should had any of that. Oh, let's see how this light colored looks you put. It doesn't look nice than I'll cover it up darker color again. But this really anyway get lighter as it dries up. I think it needs to be slightly darker than what it is right now. It's who garish right now. This looks good. Andi, let me add fuel. Dark accents toe this shape someone to make the darkest color possible. I was born seeing on and are promoting. This is the darkest, darkest it can get. Basically, what this does is makes the other colors lighter because it's all related to each other. And I think I also need toe just the on may this line much more straighter. You don't be as straight as the line here still, and let me add some daughter killed. - Let me add Ah, line off lighter color and see how it looks. I wanted to be a pick. This adds some more interested, Depending, I think that's enough. This will anyway become much more lighter when it drives on. I think I'm towards the end off this painting, but let me try adding that smoke anyway. I wanted to be tick, but gray color. If I don't like it, I'll cover it up. But let's see how it looks. I'm using a dry brush and very thick color. Yeah, I think that's enough. I don't want to order to it and maybe a suggest ah, small boat or something. But I'm not too sure whether I should do it near this line to make slightly that couldn't decide. And I don't think I'll add it here right now on. Let's call. This painting has done on. So let's remove the tape and see how this spending looks. Finally, - this is Ah, 1 30 GSM paper on the state is very strong. I didn't find my paper tape today. Well, I'm using this packing tape, which is much more sticky, so it's thinking about the layer off the paper being very careful when I'm removing the state, not feed off the paper completely and you can see I am pulling the tape away from depending slowly and steadily on. And that's the final painting. I hope you enjoy the journey on this painting from this composition.
