For centuries orchids have amazed people around the world, and have served as artistic inspiration because of their bright colors and exotic shapes. In this class, i'll show you how to paint six different species of orchids.

I will dedicate a lesson to each of the species that I chose, but before I start painting the flowers, I will show you the materials that I will use and we will see some basic techniques for illustrating with watercolor, selecting colors and sketching; so you do not need to have a lot of previous experience to take this class.

Besides that, we will review the elements and structures that define an orchid; With these tips, you will be able to paint any orchid in the future without losing the essence of what this flower is.

This class is not scientific illustration, so it doesn't matter if you take some artistic license in certain areas, because the idea is to have fun painting these magnificent flowers. However, I will put the scientific name of each species so that you can easily find it on the internet.

1. Introduction: For centuries, or kids have amaze people around the world and have served as artistic inspiration because of their bright colors and exotic shapes. Hello, my name is marking, and today I want to show you how to paint six different species of origins or gets are one of the largest bland families in the world. And they are so different from each other that sometimes it's hard to tell when two of them are related. We can find them in all kinds of colors, sizes, textures. And that is why in this class, we'll see some of them, but we won't talk about of the circuits. They get ledger, which in addition to being the national flower of my country, Colombia, it's quite common and there is a lot of information about it on the internet. I will do the Keita lesson to each of the species that I shows. But before I start painting the flowers and show you the materials that are used, and we will see some basic techniques for those trading with warning colors, selecting Colors and sketching. That way, you don't have to have a lot of previous experience to take this class. And besides that, we will review the elements and structures, define a NOR gate. With these tips, you will be able to paint any RGB in the future with a leucine. The essence of what's Flour is. This class is not scientific illustration. So it doesn't matter if you take some artistic license in certain areas because the idea is to have fun baiting these magnificent flowers. However, I will boot the scientific name of ish pieces saw you can find in easily on the internet. 2. Project: For the final project, you can choose any of the arguments, stomach pains endured the glass, and do it yourself. I will leave all these pictures in the classroom resources section, but you can also use your own photos for rich painting. I will tell you the colors I used and show you the whole process. Take a photo of your illustration and uploaded so everyone can see it. 3. Materials: For this class, we need water color paper. You can get a student grade or RTs. Great. Just make sure that use a thick paper because you will hold a lot of water around the 300s GSM, it's fine. I'm going to use called brace paper because it gives a nice texture to the final piece. If you want to add many details, Hoj brace paper works great. I'm going to be using a water colors and bands. These are still in great bands. We need some medium-size surrounded brushes and small one for the details. At personal like these nylon brushes because they kept this shape for a long time and they are also very inexpensive. Apa lead or a dish. Paper towels, pencil, eraser, arrays bent with water and whitewash. If you don't have these, you can use Whiting copper masking fluid or just tried to be careful with the blank spaces. And now let's move to next lesson. 4. Basic watercolor techniques: Before we get started with your kids, I show you the basic quarter colour techniques commonly used for botanical illustrations. The first one is wet on wet. This technique is very useful to get a smooth result on larger areas. Started painting with clean water and try to control the amount of water you apply. Because you need to distributed evenly on the surface after the area it's completely wet. Put a color on top and distributed with a brush. Use the tip of their brush for the edges to avoid unwanted bait splashes. You can also apply it wet on wet technique on the areas that are very half-baked. For example, in this case, the circles dried and two other shadow, I can reward the surface and apply more paint. Soften the edges without clean width brush until you are happy with the results. And the second technique, it's wet and dry, is useful for smaller areas and to add patterns or textures. As the name suggests, you don't have to apply water to the paper before you start painting. That makes it easier to control the water color. Once it's dry, I can create a shadow applying some color on top of the previous layer and then softened the edges with a clean what brush. The next technique, it's blending. And here we are going to use what we learned before for the wet and wet. Put some water down and then grab the first color laid down and do the same for the other color. Somewhere colors contains a dispersant like OK scold, which helps the paint to flow and blend easily. But sometimes you have to give the color hand. So use a literal torches with a wet brush to help blend. For the wet and dry. Lay down the first color and let it dry, applied the second color on top. And while it's still wet, use a clean brush to soft AND transition. Just do it a few times or human leaves the paint. And that leads me to the last technique which is lifting. You can lift or a mobile with the color of an area. If the paint is wet, just use a clean dry brush to maps and color. Try different levels of pressure and pass it as many times as you need until you are happy with the results. If the bank, you want to leave the salary dry, just apply some clean water and top with a brush and use a paper towel or a dry brush to remove the excess water. This is a great way to create highlights or to erase mistakes. But remember that some paintings are more staining than others. And if you want to use this technique in your final piece, I recommend you to test your colors before you start. 5. What defines an orchid: There are more than 25 thousand species of orchids in the world, but they all share certain characteristics that define them as argues, this is a quick lesson that will help you to draw on paint any argued you want by knowing its main characteristics. The part that we all recognize as an arcade is a flower. And what makes it so interesting, it's bilateral symmetry. If we compare it with a rose or a daisy, we will see that the symmetry of four kids is unusual. And that is what makes it attract our attention. These flowers usually have three or five petals. So avoid using an even number of metals like four or six. Not really all of them are petals. Some of them are actually settles mad. We will call them battles as this is not scientific illustration. As you can see, are kids have a structuring navigation to pedals, which is della Belgium. This structure is concave and it's where polling is stored. When painting, Keep in mind that della bellum should give the appearance of a cop or a leap. The stem and the leaves are generally thick and firm. And the flower isn't facing upwards like a rose or utility. But towards the front as if either we're posing for the photo. These are Dior kids main characteristics. There are other structure or representatives to this blunt. Bad for this class, I'm going to focus on the flower. I know that I lived many things behind that, as I said before, these citizens for scientific purposes. And now Dad, we have grasped all the materials we need. A, we talked about the basic credit color of techniques and about what defines a monarchy. We are finally ready to start painting. 6. Stanhopea jenischiana: This flower is usually called the beetle RG because it resembles an insect and they meet, I reach sweet fruit is male, is found in Venezuela, Columbia, and Peru. This one is very common in my country and I wish you could smell it because it's Reagan's. It's amazing. The colors I used for this illustration are cadmium yellow, burnt umber, permanent green, and light gray. This species has a very interesting shape. It is a hanging flower, so it looks like it is flying. I'm going to work on a side view. Saw daddy can be appreciated better. I start by finding the center of the figure. And from there I draw the different structures, including the stem. The final drawing was a bit off centered, but I don't really care. If you're lining is too dark. Use an eraser to make it lighter. Painted battles with a light wash of cadmium yellow and give some white areas on the left column and then create some shadows on those areas using the light grey. If you don't have this color, just use an extra black. Okay. The Us born don't bear for the stamp. And feel free to list any unwanted bait with a paper towel. As you can see, the battles of these organs are not completely flat, but r is slightly bent. To achieve this effect, grade depth by adding shadows. These yellow has a slightly greenish hue. For these, make sperm run-ins green with barn number. You can also add more yellow on top. So she's landed. I'll set a right. And I'll say, once you have adjusted all the values and you are comfortable with the overall result, knows your brush. We'd almost undiluted, burnt, umber, uneven spots on the bagels. Does mania as you like, tried to keep the background color. Okay. Pain, small spots, almost like dots. But keep in mind that for these phase, vapor must be very dry, or else it will mix, an unwanted stains will remain. I've highlights with whitewash, divulge the finally tails. I remove traces of pencil marks. And I decided to dealing with a very thin line. As you can see, it is not very noticeable because I don't want it to have relevance into ministration. Just like dot. We are ready for the next lesson. 7. Phalaenopsis viridis: This flower, it's native to Sumatra. It quickly dies at higher altitudes by the groves well, in warmer conditions. It is a small sized worm growing every fight with a very short stem that looms horizontally. The colors I used for this illustration are Batman and green. Lemon yellow, deep red cap in yellow. And just a tiny little bead of ultramarine blue. I'm going to paint that frontal view. The first thing I did for my sketch was to find the center of the paper, draw the petals from the center and keep the horizontal symmetry. This flower is like a cup, but are now frontal view. It looks like an arrow pointing down. You can now the Stam leaves are roots. If you want to complete the sketch. If you're lining is to the arc, use an eraser to make it lighter. I start by laying down some debates on the ballot for the battles and mixed Berman and green with lemon yellow. Know design using NAT called green with a cold yellow. That helps me to get a bright results instead of muddy colors. Add water to the bank to make it look more transparent and create a thin layer of color. Here, I realized that the green was too dark, so I just clean my brush with a paper towel. I removed the extra clear from the surface. This is an example of how you can use the lifting technique. As you can see in the photo, the bars of the battles that is close to the center is almost white. Buddy here, I painted the whole shape with the green. So what I did was to apply clean water and top. I removed the x's with a dry brush as shadows to the petals using the same color but less diluted. And then bend the stem with Burman in green. And this spot, some of them are not red. The color is similar to our rows, mother or our belly maroon. And as I don't have to, using my ballot, mixed deep red with a little bit the full ultramarine blue, just enough to make it look darker, but not enough to make it look verbal. Painting despots is very easy because they are not perfect. Simply loosen your wrist and add some paint. For the center of the flower. I use cadmium yellow. As you can see in the photograph, that Bard is warmer than the rest, also adds some of the same yellow on the labelling to create the larger color for the shadows, mixed green with a bit of red and bathe more shadows to the battles, the stem and the labelling them in order to add depth to the illustration. Remember to darken some areas of the spots we painted before because they should give the idea to follow the same shape as the Beatles. Okay. She is vague. I'll send. So user. Once the paper is completely dry, erase all the pencil marks, another few lights with whitewash to bring the illustration to life. As you can see, the lighter areas get lost with the white background. So I use the library to add more definition to the beast. And now this is the final result. 8. Phalaenopsis blue and pink: These familiar for Keats, it's quite large and popular. Many wide dorky. It's our died in bold colors like this one. So sadly, we can't find this particular flower in nature. But that doesn't mean that we can use it to create demonstration. The color I used for this painting are spirulina, Lulu, Lemon yellow, and bright pink. This flower has a shape similarity. They got lazy. I started the sketch from the center, and then I added some guidelines to draw the pedals symmetrically. This flower has five petals, well-defined. I chose a frontal view because I'm planning to turn these Illustration y_2 up other, maybe another loop color for my sister. I started by mixing a tour price using the Xero Liam blue with a yellow. To make some bright blue. You use a cold yellow. If you tried to use, for example, a cadmium yellow with us, I really am blue. You'll get a dome or multicolor. Once you're happy with the tone, luxury down in applied on the buttons, be careful to keep the blank spaces where the young goats and build up your layers, creating shadows on a penthouse, retaining light tones closer to the center. Right. And the case study. Yes. Now we mix yellow, violet color for the shadows. I will only use this color to give definition to then abandonment and create more depth. Once you are completely happy with the Bessel's, you are ready to being the veins. These vanes are not completely parallel. They are ramified in some areas. And that makes the job is here. Don't load your brush with a lot of water. And tried first on another surface to make sure that you've got the right amount of water and big met. I started my drawing lines because errors can be easily corrected when there is little bead embossed. Using the same color, the closer r to the center. Okay. Don't forget to add being to create some highlights with the applied Gosh. This one was very simple. 9. Psychopsis mendenhall: This was my fair one from all the argued study banked in today. And love the color received has and those structures that looks like antennae. Also, the battles have a lot of movement and didn't look regime as in the other species that we will see in this class. The colors I used for this illustration are red, orange, cadmium yellow. And a bit of violent for the shadows. For this sketch, I divided the paper into halves to help me to keep the horizontal symmetry. And the upper part of this flower is a slightly longer than the lower. Sum. I mark the area where I want to draw the pathos with a circle. And then I created all the details. I start by laying down some of the beans on the palate. And then I apply the light wash of yellow to the petals, making sure to keep the areas where the orange goes free of paint. Let it dry before you start painting with the orange. Otherwise, the colors will mix. Okay. Adjusted tomes as many times as you need. I prefer working on layers instead of just being tinged with a lot of pigment. Because that way I can see what colors should say illustration best. The orange of the antennae. It's not as bright as independence. So I mix the same orange with a bit of carbon to make it look darker and also to create some shadows on the lower part. And now it's time to add some shadows. But before we get into that, I want to take a look at the reference image and compare it. Stress. As I said before, the battles of this flower are not rigid. So we must try to imitate those repulse, resemble those of a close. Makes cadmium yellow with purple and greed some shadows with that color, as you can see in the video. Action. The orange parts, different tones, shadows. He's the same closure you mix for Dan Taney. Invade the shadows following what you did before. If the illustration scenes of unity, as these colors darker than the yellow, make sure you only applied over the orange areas. Yes. To finish our piece. At cadmium yellow to the edges of the antennae, create more details or writing the colors if you want. Although I'm not a huge fan of outlining the illustrations, in this case, I had to do it because I didn't paint the background to create contrast and without the outlining this image Luke and complete. Okay? So success. Okay. 10. Masdevallia glandulosa: This flower, it's native to South America. It's very small, around two or three, as long. As you can see, this one is very different from the others because the battles are not independent and we can't see the labelling. The colors I used for this illustration are cadmium yellow, bright pink, violet, and permanent green. You can use. So they're Hughes, have in mind that this flower, it's full of warm colors. That means that you should use our worm yellow, a green, a warm, or red, and so on. For these are good. I'm going to use our three-quarter view. Cause a lack that shape similar to a hard from all the kids that I'm painting today. This one is the easiest to draw because it is just a triangle. If you like Mister Dark, use an eraser to make it lighter. This one is also the ECS debate, started by meeting Yellow Cadmium with permanent green and apply a light wash on the outside of the flower. For the inside. Other light washer violet, and for the tapes of the battles, he is yellow. The most important thing you need to do to paint these are good. It's to create a gradient from yellow to Violet. Danger intermediate color between this two is a bank which combined with yellow, will give you a bright orange. Most of what I did with this illustration is wet and wet because that technique is very useful to get a smooth transitions. For the center, I use a very saturated orange and an almost pure cadmium yellow on top to create a focal point. Apply a darker greets the stem, and add shadows to create depth from the bed. Those shadows I mix violent with yellow. He's a clean with brush to help you to smooth the edges. All right. So for this boats, load your brush, we download a file it and create a regular shapes guided thumb or as the center of the flower. There is no need to be a perfectionist. Because if you look at the photograph, you'll see that these bugs are not very fertile. If you want to create too many details, I recommend you to take a close up of the circuit because it looks as it had a lot of colorful rain drops inside. For the spot star closer to the center, use a different color. Just makes violence with purple to keep a gradient. Finally, polish the last details. Maybe add some yellow or beak to some areas to make it look more interesting. Adjust your values and add some highlights your piece using a whitewash. Just like we are done with this illustration. See you in the next lesson. 11. Paphiopedilum argus: This is a relatively common species. It is found in the Philippines and usually blooms in the winter and spring seasons. It grows well with intermediate climate conditions, but also its tolerant of warmer and cooler conditions. The colors I used for this illustration are permanent green, cadmium yellow, bright pink, and ultramarine blue. To sketch the circuit, imagine you are using a mirror because the horizontal symmetry, it's very obvious here. First, split your Aryan. He has this flower has three pedals and a relatively big shaped as a cup. As I said before, if your final lining is too dark, use an eraser to make it lighter. Start by meat seeing green and yellow and apply a light washes of paint on some parts of those. And the lower part of the non-random makes up verbal and laid down on the tip of the nose and the upper bar. And then is moved the transition with a clean, wet brush. These are good, is the best example I could find to show you how the same species can look different depending on the stage they are. This flower changes its colors and values so much that you can get extremely different results just by looking at different reference from the same species. And that's the thing with planets. It's very easy to get illustration that resembles the original because plants are not just copies. They all differ in some areas and they are not perfect. And sometimes their beauty come from their imperfections. I wanted these flowers, you have many hues. So either being orange and yellow to some places. And Bob, I must admit that I got carried away and that may lose to blank or light areas. I'm more used to a big mediums like oil and gosh. So I tend to have this problem when I give the read of all the wide space on the paper. And then I have to start all over again or at whitewash on top, which is not the best idea for a professional B's. So please be careful and don't make the same mistake that I did. A light purple and with a small brush, draw the veins carefully. Don't load your brush to match. Tried first on another surface to make sure that the right amount of water and pigment. Similar to draw in the branches of a tree because it has a ramified shape. The Beatles have parallel veins, use the same color to draw them. And don't worry if the lines are not Burbank to are these continues. I've despots with purple and polish the finals. Dale, somebody more shadows and highlights with blush. She's begun. Okay. When I finished, I realize a looks like there is a middle person coming from a star. I think that's the most about these blank. 12. Outro: I hope you had fun painting the sanctions flowers because I served only deep. Please upload your projects. Are everyone can seat. If you enjoyed this class, please live good feedback and follow me for future updates. If you didn't enjoyed this class, leaves some feedback in a way to help me improve my next lesson.
