Elegance Through Geometry

Hello everybody! My name is Filippo Carnovalini, and I have a lot of interests. One of these, music, became my job: I'm currently a Ph.D. Student researching Computational Creativity for automatic music composition. But the other things that I love need other ways to be expressed!

A hobby I have had for a long time is Origami folding: I was about 8 years old when my mom bought me my first origami book, and I've been folding ever since. Now I joined Skillshare to share with others this passion through lessons.

Other things that I love (and might someday become classes): Mandolin playing, Theatre acting, Drawing, Computer Science, Songwriting...

1. Introduction: hello and welcome to discuss. I'm Philippa Carnival any and I hope to be your organic teacher. You're wrong. Skill share. What is origami? If your ear, you probably know that it comes from the Japanese origami means folded paper and it's the ancient Japanese art off folding paper to get objects like this one or this one for many, many others. We will focus on origami birds in particular in this class as the one unfolding right now. But you will also learn the basics off origami More in general. This is not just the course that it will teach you outfall some specific models, but we'll give you the basis on outfall and out understand diagrams which are the traditional way in which origami artists show out, fold their creations with the instructions off discourse. You will be able to fold any origami that does not require too complex falls. I hope that with the scores, I will pass you on the passionate F or gammy. This wonderful I'll be that takes a lot of time to master that can give you very I satisfaction when you get wonderful results 2. The Dove - Basic Folds : Hello. In this first lesson, we're going to fold traditional origami down. I am here. Ah, square piece off. We got on paper, but this is actually, uh, pretty standard type of paper. You do not need any special kind of paper to fold. The origami is we will fold in this class. You do need, however, a square piece of paper. Since most origami models do need a start from a square piece of paper which is rather uncommon, actually. But do not worry. You can easily obtain a square from any rectangular piece of paper. I have your on example. You can simply folder the shorter side, um, to the longer side like this. And once it fits, you will know that these aria year will be our square. And this area here is the remaining part that we do not need. So once you've made this fold on the rectangle, you can fold the other meat off paper over the triangle we just created. And then last the full is well established. You can use the back of your finger to mail toe push down the paper so that it becomes a very fitting fold. And now you can use scissor to cut over this fold or if you did a full dwell. You can also tear the paper and you get a square piece of paper. You can duties on standard printer paper and you get what you need to fold these or Grammys in particular. I found that recycled paper is well fit for this kind of folding. No, to start. How were we got me when it to full the square in our long did the young You know, there are two basic kind of folds in origami making. The first is the valley ful, which is the one We'll do it right now. We take one corner and make it reach the other corner like this You can use your fingers to make sure that the corners are aligned. When you push the chile years, you can slide them. Once they are aligned on your finger. You know that the to the years are line you can control. The paper will full along the side off the paper and then you can start squishing the paper . As I said before, you can use the name lost, the fold is decided to make it Finner and stronger. No, these is the bellyful. As you can see, it forms a valley on the paper. If you look it at the other side, it looks like a mounting and indeed a valley fall. The scene from the other side of the paper is what is called a month unfold. To do that, we should have done instead of these movement who should have folded on the backboards to pay amounting. Right now, it could seem that these two fools are actually the same thing. But when the paper is simple just like this, they are indeed the same thing. But once you've done many, many fools, you could be required to do a month unfold instead off a normal valley fold. Because you cannot access the other side of the paper anyway, with our first fold. And now we need once again to fold the paper enough taking this corner over to these other corner like this. Instead of leaving the paper folded, we unfolded. This is a tracing fold. Ah, full that. We need just to get a sign on the paper to get the exact position off the next fold. Now we need to take this corner and push a year like this and we must do the same with the other side of the paper. As you can see, this truffles went along line off the food we did earlier, which was the trace for these other fools. We will do now another Christian folder. We fold model in us like this. But since this is Onley attrition fold and we need on Lee to get the position off the center of the paper, we could just pinch it like this. As you can see, we now know where the century is. We don't need or folding the oh length off the paper. We can now take the corner the corners and bring them. Do the center. This is once again a tracing for the preparation fold for another kind of full. We need to do soon, because instead of doing a valley fold or a month unfold, we need to do attack fold. We need to duck this piece of paper this corner inside the rest of the paper. As you can see, we've created a sort of folder off paper and we can take this corner and bullshit insight. The paper But to do that we need a trace off where the paper must go inside. If we didn't do before before, it would not be so simple as to push in a bit of paper. Greece dissenter. As you can see, we folded inside Julie years not in front as a very fold on the back as a month in food. But between the layers we do the same on the other side. Once we have increased well, were fooled. When doing tack falls, it is usually useful to do both of Valley and a month unfold on the same creasing in order to get as a move duck off the paper since, as you can see, the fold will follow along those lines. What we do now is a month unfold on the center of these. This is the result of the fold. And what we will do next will start to raise the look off the bird we want to achieve. This was the top and I would pull it to the bottom. And were these little flops off paper which will become the wings to model doings. We follow this sort of praise that we obtain from earlier falls and we basically take this flat anger as long as it goes and we do the same on the back reconnect. It is now starting to look like a duck. What we do now with the wings is falling along this line. From this point here, the meeting off these two corner and this point don't here like debt, and we must do the same on the other side. This is very common in origami. When there is some kind of symmetry, you need to do all the faults you need to do. Two times we go back to the first layer and pull the wings backwards as long as they go now , they would follow along this line, the same must be done on the back. Can also fold the tail by following these line and doing are fooled preparation for a tech fold and we push it inside between the other two layers. The model is almost over. We just need to fool the ed wanted to come like this with Bush and craze the fold for what is once again a duck fold. This time is a little bit different because the layer opens on Lee on one side so we can open a bitch and push it down. There we go. This is the complete origami. In the next lesson, we're going to fold a traditional origami Spiro. But we will also come back to this model. We just folded. So make sure you learned out duties and keep one model. You folded because we'll try to decorate a beat this model to make it look even better. 3. The Sparrow - Proportions: in this lesson, we're going to learn out. Fold honorariums, Poirot, and we'll also discuss a bit about proportions in Oregon. As you can see, I have your free, different sizes of paper and we will try to see what comes out. Are folding the same origami on different dimensions. But first, let's focus on the bigger size to learn how to fold these origami full. The sparrow must start my crazy, the diagonal off the paper. Once again, we do a bellyful. Let's make sure that borders are aligned, okay? And we can push it with our name and then we unfold because we need these as a tracing to fold the to corners along to the young. You know, as you can see here, this is a very common fold. As you can see, bringing one side onto the other side is basically the same as dividing these angle into its to buy sectors. This is a very important thing that is often used in over Grammys. Re Grammies do need a little bit off geometry. Let's do the same on the other side. Yeah, there we go. Oldham, no, We need to fold this Cory angle over here on the back, off the paper. So instead of doing the usual Valley fold, we do a month in full gear like this. We can also cheat by basically doing Valley fold on the other side. Let's check that the fold goes as long as the top of the other two triangles we formed earlier. Now back to this side of the paper. Now the fold we're about to do is a little bit more complex than the others we've done till this moment, and it's a squash fold. It's a school full because we need to squash the paper onto the rest off the paper. In particular, we're going to squash this corner here and this corner onto the other side of the paper west, questioning me that we're not just doing something like this of all the fooled, which we do any way to trace where we want to fold. But we want to open a layer of paper, this layer in particular, and push it down on the rest of the paper. You see, it was the belief old and opened layer we squash fold Notice that you'll have to do an additional fold year because this piece of paper was not folded yet, and we need to squash it alongside with the rest of the fold in order for the for July flat . We can now do the same on the other side. Let's watch it closely. I open layer up to the point where I want to fold. I push it down like that and the remaining flap I pinched top. I take the bottom and a squish it. There we go. As you can see, since we had folded the three angle on the back of the paper, we created a sort off who'd for this model, which is actually a different side of the paper. You see why this is important at the end of this medium? No, let's go on. What we need to do now is a full that will create the legs off the spot room. Well, this fall is very easy. It's just a simple, very fold. It's important because it's what is called a judgment fold that is a fold where you have no precise indication off where to fold. But you have to make a judgment to understand how the model will look like it is very are to get on judgment, fold on the first try. You can look at instructions, diagrams, other folders down. But still, you will probably need to fold model more. There wants to get perfectly right. The fold is like this. We think this corner and we do these simple bellyful. As you can see, I have no indication whatsoever where the folds should lie. One could say that is approximately 14 foot. If paper 1 50 one could say that he is about one furred off these other site, it's our to tell. But once you've folded a model a few times, you get a night for the kind of things we no need to do. The same fold on the other side off the paper. But we wanted to get it perfectly symmetrical. We could fold it just like that, trying to get the except symmetry. But it is easier to fold enough the model and do the full over the other fold to make sure it is symmetrical. You can see I can simply full other full on the ground and there we go. It is no mostly perfectly see metrical. We actually need to close Mr Size onto the other man. Not like that as we did, but like this with a bellyful on the middle. As you can see the fold, we did form the leg spiral. We can no shape the end once again. This is a judgment fooled. We need to form a beak out of this corner by pushing it down somewhere like this. We will actually talk in these side of the paper. But once we were doing the reference valley fold, you can see more or less what the effect will be. An iron beak, a lower beak. I like the lower week. So I folded. But the fold likeliest. And then we can talk in the paper along the creates we just made. There we go. The only fault it's left is the deal of the Sparrow, which will actually go like this, and we will be Technion. And once again, this will be stuck in from inside. So basically tucked out and the effect will be more or less like this. So other with duties we have traced that you fools that we're gonna make and we can now open a bit. The model and the King one and the king the other. There we go now. This was a judgment fold as well, because we could have done a shorter body with this folded by folding the first fold over a year and obviously getting a longer or shorter day. By choosing the second fold by moving a bit Dale, one can make sure that went who don't be on the table. The spiral will stand because it has free standing points, the two legs on the to you. It is often ice that origami is can stand on table rather than just lying flat. So this was the bigger piece of paper we had. Now let's quickly fold also the medium and the smaller one and see what difference it makes . There we go. I folded this more than other two times with smaller papers. No one might think that folding the same model with solar paper gives the same result on Lee with a smaller scale. This is partly true, but it's not corrector. For example, you can see that this mortal stays a bit more closed. India's other two mothers. This might seem strange. Since we did the same faults, I did change the proportions off the judgment folds beat to give a bit of a variety. But the true different is that having the scene falls on a smaller piece of paper means that the thickness off the paper, which might seems nothing but can be a lot when many folds are made, makes this motives that are shorter. They're smaller, be more open than the one that is larger because there is less overlap of paper in his area here, while in a smaller amount of space, there is the same amount off layers off paper. Also, even if I folded the very, very same faults with the same proportions on different sizes, the effect is a bit different. I think that smaller pieces of paper make more cuter. It is rest. Bigger paper can give more per Susan on the full to make. So a rule off Tom can be using larger paper for more complex models that have more folds so that the paper will lie more flat. And you left more precision when uniforms and using smolder pieces of paper on simpler models like this one. Because the result is a big toe cuter. Now, the chest of paper is also very important. For example, here I earlier fully another version of this model using origami paper that has two different sides. What is this Dotted Potter and the other one is blank. These are two sides off the same paper as you can see. Remember the good that we did my folding layer be behind. That was important because it conveyed a color change. These makes the ad off the spiro be a different color from the rest of the model off course on Lee. If you use paper that match that, ask you colors on the two sides, which is actually rather common for origami paper. So the test of paper can be very important in this kind of mothers that show two different colors. It is usually mentioned in the instructions that you can find if you should use shoe sides two different colors for the two sides or the same color to get the best results. Usually, origami artists also suggest the ideal size off the sheet of paper to be used in order to get the optimal Um, he's a folding and the best proportions, with the result no, and her finger once mentioned is that once motherless fold is finished, you have many, many possibilities on how you can. The great that model, as we already mentioned, changing the proportions off some judgment folds can result in different effects. Example year and pointing the tail more downwards. Or you can even more folds. Nobody that was you, not to. We come push tail outwards if we want to, we can pull the beak, our ports, we can We might find it. These angles are to shop, so we could around the them bit by doing a full like this, and I'm tucking it inside this kind of thing can also mothers sort off I off the bird like this. We can also try to push the side off the paper, the back off the sparrow, to give it a more rounded look. This kind of falls are usually not mentioned in the instructions you confined in books or online mother. Very important, giving your own reference your own aesthetic judgement to define you to the final result and everywhere God me artists, the menu origami artists become females, even for how the shape the models once they're completed, so try to experiment when you fold these or Grammys on how he could improve them by making small, additional folds by a rounding certain bits off papers by adding a little folds like these ones to make it more rounder. I could fool also like here. Or maybe I could think that these legs are too big. I could want to full them on the back to make a big disappear. But then I would get a larger feet so I might want to full death enough as well. But then I get some problems because the proportions are not right anymore. It is not easy to find the optimal solutions for a model from sometimes it can be also good looking when it's folded in a simpler manner. But I suggest you that you try to find this kind of solutions. For example, let's go back to that. We folded. I look at some things that I usually like to do when folding origami doves, for example. I like very much restoration model, but I think that the tail is too big like this. I prefer toe off it. So to do that, I fold it like this, you know, and then I took this piece inside like that. Personally, I feel that the day like these looks much better. Also looks better wincing from behind or from below, because that's this wavy after so I don't actually push. This decides to leave them a bit more around it because I think there's more police to be more rounded than on hard looking origami style. Another thing that I'd like to do is to shape a bit the wings to make that look like angel wings. Let's see to debt. I usually fold it in halls and then off again and then off again on the other side. You see, I didn't Free Month unfolds here, and I can use the month unfolds to pinch them like this, pinch a little bit, pinch a little bit to make the wing look a bit more feathery. Let's see, I can also pinch a bit at the end off the wing to make it look bit more rounded and going upwards. Let's do it again on the other side, a month unfold in the middle and then in the middle off the middle, which is 1/4 and then on the other middle of the middle like this, and then we pinch it and we pinch it and we've been shit. We can actually go all the way up to the corner that's doing and then we take the ending and which to be, of course. But then when I do these, I find that this part becomes a bit of unknowing, is not going do well with the kind of filled gave to the wing. So I also like to patient it a bit like this so that it becomes a smaller and brings the wing closer to dead. Let's do it again. Get us either side. I take these bit and I pinch it when doing this kind of the Grecian fools. It is oh often common to pinch the paper to fold it in this kind off curved manner, which is not possible doing simple mountain and valley falls there. This is how I like to fool the traditional origami doll, a Evan changed model, which is the same. But the field is very different from before he's more rounded, is less. Lunke is less geometrical sound. My might prefer the traditional geometrical origami sh style but is left to personal taste , and it is important to express your skill also for this kind of decorations 4. The Crane - Diagrams: in this lesson, we're going to fold the origami crane, which is the most famous or gamma model all over the world. You may already know it, but will use it as an example on how to read diagrams. You already so in the upper part off the other lessons, they showed some drawings showing the instructions off the fools that you act to do. Those were taken from the diagrams for these motors. Diagrams are illustrations that you can find in origami instruction books, which are a way to encode how you fooled a paper in order to retain a certain model of a regarding and is the most traditional way to teach outfall the rig armies without the presence on the instructor. It is now very common to learn Origami is from videos like the ones you're looking at right now. But traditionally, books were the way to learn or Grammys. And in the book off course, you cannot show how to fold a piece of paper if not through illustrations. So, for example, you can see at this first instruction shows the paper as diamond and shows narrow that goes from the bottom corner to the top corner and from one side to the other. As you can see, the arrows goes back and forth on both sides Is. Moreover, there is a line going from one corner to the other, and from the other corner could the other one. That line shows that you need to fold amounting folded, because if you look closely, you'll see that the plan is dash dot dash, not that's not lying. Those lines means that you have to fold along that line amounting fold. So let's do that. We're folding along the diagonal, um, mumbling folder. Uh, and since the arrows goes back and forth, this means that we also must unfold once week, have down the first fold we must have seen on the other direction. There we go and unfold on this. Next, the instructions instruction we to fall long the middle lines. But this time the line is not. That's not. That's not what it's simply dashed. Dashed line means you have to do a Lelli fooled and once again it's a fold and unfold indication. There goes the first and we flatmate with the name and the second. There we go. These were preparation. Creates is to do the next fall, which is a really rather complex. But it is very important. Learn, because is what it's needed to do. The square base or the bird bees, which is, of course, the base needed to fold this particular board, which is the most famous origami bird. But it's also used in a huge variety off other organise. So it is nothing common that an origami will start by showing the force we just did, or even by simply seen square base without explaining what to do, because it is so well known that what we're about to fold is the square base that most origami artists already know what to do Now. This next faults shows that we must take the free upper corners and take them to the bottom corner following lines we D having month unfolds year and here, and valuables here and there. Now this means taking things like that. It must be not so obvious, but the fact that we already folded decreases abscess to do what is needed to be done. Moreover, I included in this diagram, uh, working progress illustration, which sums sometimes is provided when fold is so complex that is not immediately clear what needs to be done, usually to know what the final result will look like. You need to look at the next picture on the diagram, which also shows the next set of instructions. But sometimes when complex folds are needed, like in this case, also the image off. How it should turn out is included. Now we have the bird, the bird base or the square base. Of course, this square, as you can see, and that's white school like that. Now what we have to do now is another valley fold. As you can see, it goes along the middle off the single, and we have to fold it and then unfolded. And we must do the same on the other side, off the paper as a shuhn. But you can see in the diagram that there are also two additional arrows, each having wa small tick along the line off the arrow. This special arrows means repeat on the other side. We already did on one side and on the other side, but usually these arrows mean either on the reflection or on the back off the model. In this case, it means that we must repeat this grace folders on the back off the model both on one side and on the other. Sometimes on Lee won a row is provided having more than one tick. The more that takes, the more times you need to repeat the same fold. Sometimes it is simple, written on the on the diagram that you need to repeat the folds every time you do a symmetrical part off the diagram this next fall as a big ah point of a room along the two corners. This is the indication off the tuck inside fold, which is also called on inside reverse fold, since you have to reverse the paper on the inside. So we need to tack in this corner along the creates we rain, and we must stuck inside these other corner following the creates. Once again, we have two additional arrows that show us to repeat on the back off the model. So let's do that talking site. These part and that insight. The other part notice that when you flip the model twofold, this additional repeat falls. It is usually better to go back to the original side you were facing In this case, the model is completely symmetrical on both sides, so it is not important. But sometimes if you forget to go back to the original side, you might get lost when following instructions. This next instruction is telling us to take the leap off the model and fold it down along this line as a valley fold and then fold and unfolded. As you can see, the arrow starts from this point, and that is usually the beginning off the arrow, the point you have to take with your finger in order to move the paper. But it depends on the precision level off the diagram, which are sometimes not as precise as one might wish next fall to tell us to do a full on the same creates but taking this flat over the model, and we must also repeat on the back. So let's flip it and please and go back to the first site. What we must do now is a month ng fold on here, but there are also other arrows that tell us more in detail what to do. So it is not just a month in food like that, as shown by the dash dot line. But there is also the symbol off the attacking side and also narrow, telling us to take this point off the paper and pass it fruit, the other layers of paper. As you can see, this appears inside and comes back out. These are many ways that the diagram artist can show what to do to be more precise, as precise as possible. So let's do as he says, and check inside my thinking this corner and bullied upwards. These, of course, will become the ed off the bird were for the before the, but we have to repeat on the other side. This time. It does not mean we have to repeat on the back, which is already folded since we fall it both the front of in the back but on the other side, symmetrical. So we need to fold year that's prepared to fold and then open a beat toe, tuck inside and flexing the model. There we go. It now looks like the next instruction, which tell us once again to do a month unfold on the people. Here is a judgment fold to make the ad off the bird, but also to tack it inside. So let's do that. There we go. It already looks like a board, but the final full to tell us to fold very fold year to shape the wings. This is actually not a complete fold that we want to lay flat, but rather Moore's move full that we want to give the shape to the model we can do the same year. And there were the origami crane is over. We can open a bit this Jew flaps, and also these two flaps, like here to make it stand on a table along the four legs. We can also take pantsuit and turn the wing around the pencil to make it look a bit more soft. Try not to exaggerate when folding around the passing, because you might end up with a cylinder, which is too much. Once you have the shape you prefer, your game is over. In this diagram. There is an additional instruction that is rather confusing at first sight, since there is no fool that you need to do. But there is a narrow on the back off the tail, and there are two white dots here and here. The white dots are usually an indication on where to hold your fingers when doing certain fold or somethin. Action. So if we old here and here and move following the arrow, what happens? This bird can flap its wings by moving the tail because the tail is connected to the wing with this slip of paper, and by pulling it, it can move its wings. 5. The Penguin - Wrap Up & Project: Congratulations. You're nearly at the end of this course. I just want you to remand that we have learned how to fold. Valley Falls Month unfolds are to follow instructions on diagram of the talking paper inside other fools and in general, all twofold. Many origami is so for the project. For this class, I want you to fold one origami on your room following instructions on the diagram. I included links to free origami birds. For this class product, this is a traditional is one which I like a lot. A traditional chicken and a flipping bird. This is not a traditional model, but I like it very much because, of course, Glenn flapped its wings. This is likely order than the other two mothers. You will need to learn also to do outside river fold to do this mother. So let's live into last origami off this class to learn how to do that kind of fools. Let's fold them, Nori. Coming penguin. To fool the penguin, you will need a sheet of paper. There is two different colors on the two sides. You can use paper that is on that as the same color on both sides. But you will look better if the two sides have different colors. Let's start on the papers side and fold along. The diagonal is just to create. So we did valley fold and then we unfold. Now we need to do a judgment fold taking the other side of the paper on the front. But we do not need to go all the way, folding them by sector off this angle. We just need to take these corner up to the center like this, not going all the way off at about 1/3 off the people. We must do the same on the other side. We can use the symmetry off the paper to fold exactly the same proportion like these. And then we need to fold this flap over a year. We can do a bellyful that reaches this point. This conjunction between the two flaps with me. What you actually need to do a month in full ear, not about the food. So we push it on the back. Now we need to fold along the centre doing a month unfolding. And here we have the tricky part off the model. We need to fool the Ed by taking these flap of paper over a year and do something like that . But we do not want to go over the top with Mbali fold or on the back with a mountain fold when doing the else we usually do attack inside fold. But if you try to do it, I consigned. Fold on your We just cannot get it on the other side because the opening is on here and we do not want to big to go this way. But we wanted to go this other way. So as a setting. Those lesson. The attack inside fold is also called inside reverse fold because you reverse the direction off paper going inside.
