About This Class

For this class, we are going to create 3 styles of nebulas using the same neon colors and the same techniques

In each painting, you will spend less than 30 mins. The techniques I am going to show you can be applied to any of your regular watercolors but I will be pointing out how Neons are for me considered a specialty media because it requires special attention and I will show you how to expect from them. And it is going to be the Same observations that you’ll need to watch out for your Liquid Watercolors, your inks, your metallics.

The purpose of this class is that  I want you to expand your knowledge into different mediums that can’t be created by mixing your primary colors. I want you to have a more structural technique to have as a foundation for your nebulas in less time.

Hello, I'm Laura, a Galaxy Lover.

I started creating watercolor galaxies 3 years ago and I blame my amazing daughter who bought a new home and I wanted to create something special for her, and I remembered her marriage vows included a couple of references about the universe and a galaxy was a perfect representation of that. Since then, I haven't stop creating them.

1. Introduction: Hi. My name is Laura Galaxy sober and thank you for stopping by for this class. We're going to create three styles of nebulous using the same neon colors and the same techniques on each painting. You will spend less than 30 minutes and the techniques I'm going to show you can be applied to any of your regular watercolors. I will be pointing out how Neon's are for me. Consider is special is going to be the same observations that you will need to watch out for your liquid water callers, your beings, your metallics. The purpose of this class is that I want you to expand your knowledge into different mediums that can be created by mixing your primary colors in this case for millions. And I want you to have a more structural technique as a foundation for you to create your Navy allies. And I put you find these useful and they start 2. Materials: Let's start with your watercolor paper I'm going to use for this class. The brand arches. It's called Press, but you can use whatever you have enhanced. The point is to practice. Usually I use fluid 100 in cancelled. Excel Insane goes for your normal water. Callers use the same techniques. You seen what you have today. I'm using hand made watercolors made by Stuckey Week callers that I bought on Etsy, and we will talk more about it for the black. I just letter coal or concentrated liquid to make the process more practical, but you can use any black tube off water caller for brushes. My favorite ones are the mop A brushes but unstable. Using any kind of round type brushes, just look out. If you paper can handle hard bristles or self the ones on your paper tow, avoid damaging it on each stroke. To prepare your paper, you're going to need masking tape to hold your paper to the surface and avoid a so much distortion to it. And once you tape to create a white frame, if you wish to do so for the stars, these are the two brands I use in to intensify the brightness off the stars. I use that white gel pen to create the luminosity around the stars. I use chalk pastels in some cotton swabs to apply the pastels. On top of the star have two containers of clean water preferred in a piece of clothes or rock to clean your brushes. Now let's continue to the such of section. 3. Swatches : from Lloris Money Block. She states that neon colors contain pigments. They are made of molecules there are very efficient at absorbing high frequency light and then in needing lower frequency light. I tried my best to research Neons water coolers, and it's hard to find detail information about how they're made. This is one of the reasons that unions became to be more special to me for this class. I choose to use a watercolor said that I bought form, etc. And I will put the link either here on the notes section, if it lets me. Otherwise, it will be on the project section. If you're serious about handcrafted weather callers or handmade water coolers, these brand is fantastic. Liam's are not very common to find in the ones you find are not a speak mint and as they set, and it requires more layers than usual to get the vibrancy that I'm looking for in the blending Ace, a challenging one. Right now I'm mixing without any thought of the neon colors, and I'm using a lot of water because that is how we paint. I'm referring to mix them together on the same way you pain. Now let's go a beat deeper, creating those color combos friendly. Those 1st 3 mixes were Miss, and you will see that for painting exclusively nebulous or your night skies. The color combination is going to be limited regarding they set off colors. Now I am choosing those colors that I think will work better from the first swatches. And once again, I am using the same amount of water in the same mixing or blending that I use for my gum axis or my normal painting style. I made those first swatches for you to have an idea on have the colors of react between each other and at the same time, you will see if your paper absorbs the big man or how he's going to accept them. This time, I'm making a better decision on choosing colors that I know they go together. In the end, I will pick one color combination that will attract my attention between the five combos. Only one jump on me, the yellow, orange and pink, and I will use the same combination for the three. Nebulas were going to great, and we're going to use it in a very restricted way. Other cars. This is why is very important for you to make swatches, to understand how your specific brand of water coolers behaves between each other in long story short. What I learned about Nunes is that some of the coolers have refused to be together, and by doing so that brightness dies, turning them into a normal caller. I'm telling you, Neon's need very special attention. Neon's are not well absorbed into most of my papers. Nunes love good quality paper. Neon's like to stand by themselves and even blending them with similar colors. Their own personality gets lost in eons of requires extra time. Attention in love to fully work with them in same situation happens with your rings in your metallics. There is a learning curve on all of them, and this is the type of exercise you need to do. Even if you change brands and this will be a good rule toe, apply to every set you own. Dry your own watercolors on different brands of paper. You will be amazed if I note how differently they react. So watching will help you to knew how to pair your water. Callers in your paper and the winner for me will be arches. Sometimes is not. You is your paper. Let me show you what you need to look for if you have a watercolor paper that doesn't work with your neon's or anywhere colors that reacts weird or acts the same way that your seen tap your brush with paint into your paper, do not drag it. "L" Style: let me take this opportunity to tell view that this is the fastest way to create in the nebula without spending hours on them. And we're going to use fewer layers by really feeling your brush with lots and lots of caller in less water and by creating the form or shape of your nebula first with your black . For me, the fact that I can create Galaxies in less than health and our is really amazing, and I'm going to ask you to not put pressure by finishing in a quick manner. I've been doing these for a few years and comes a very easy to me. The hard part of all my courses is to show you how to make them in an easy and fast way. Do not forget the recent on why you started. Painting for me was to have a relaxing meet time, so don't rush it with Newman's own eons. I had a hard time understanding them, and I touched bottom or a pan on the sets I bought because I could not get the hang on how to blame or stroke the caller with my brush. I always start with the black, the big men off the neons have the amazing characteristic that taints your black, no matter how many layers you put on top of your black that Hugh is going to show thinking now about that, my gentiles and violates have the same effect. I like to see them without overwhelming the nebula. - To create the luminosity around the stars is basic and a simply concept. Grab your cotton swabs in your pastels to create a softer light around the stars. Tap your cotton swab full of pastels over the stars of your choice and thus the excess pastels with a brush. And this will give a softer look. Use any color you want for the stars. Usually I start with white, and then I choose a different color to create smaller stars. If you're stars were deemed by the pastels, use your white yelp in to give them their light back and create more stars. If you feel like there are some areas, amazing stars or certain sports that I need a bigger or smaller stars for the next two styles off nebulous, I'm going to become very repetitive because we're going to use the same technique. Feel free to mute it or watch it first, then mute it. If you found on me on Instagram, you will notice that he this style it's more loose and not a soft as the majority ones that I created before the moment I finished painting. There's one I waas in love with the lack off eternal blending and still look good. I hope you fell in love us much as I did in congratulations. You created your first nebula 5. Half Circle Style: I hope you're ready for painting number two, you one of my most that like styles. I want to show you what I look for when I framed the painting using washi. Take. If you want to keep the white frame, make sure your tape discovering your paper because the water slides between the washi tape and the painter staple and you will end touching up all around the frame. On my first course, I show you how I cover them. Then I tape the paper into the table. No matter what I dio, the paper never takes his regional form. Avoid contamination when you send your brush for unions. Always dip it in water tow wash it just to make sure it's not the brush that has the black Golar on it. Yeah, I've been there. Let's start out in our noon color or the color of your choice. Using your own watercolor set. We're starting with the darkest color first, and we will end with lightest. Let's graph the darkest color and paint around the black, live in a white space, and then do a bit of blending by mixing the two colors. Keep your distance and stay in your lane. Don't start pushing the black too much into the neon and notice that I'm tapping and not use in broad strokes. Topping on this case is a more control technique. I used to keep the colors in place. Now I noticed that the black was not that black, and I needed the paper to be more wet to for the color to travel. So I added, Another layer is going to make sense in a little bit. Then I will come back at in more color in us. Always break those lines, create an organic form. We went imperfections, and I'm adding more cooler, little by little. And then I'm going to start pushing the color into the black, using brushstrokes to create little spikes. And because we added that the black caller the paper is now wet in the cooler than neon will start moving towards the black area. I keep it in the cooler into the black. Now you have two options. Here you can add Kohler Onley ones and blend all the ages with the same low to paint or at the colder to the black. Clean your brush at more color and so on in at the end. You can lightly makes book coolers in here. I'm doing all in one load of paint, just mixing the pink and the black. Here is a close up for you to see how far the black went into the golder and because I always use more water that I need. I took the excess water with a brush, which is a clear example on how lifting the color works. The rush absorbs the water and the pigment altogether live in a nice light area on your painting. Let's that another. Let's put it this way. Another line of the color. You choose to be your darkest. Let the caller touch each other, and this is going to be the same process for the two remaining colors. For me will be the orange and the yellow. What we're doing is that we are creating a Grady Int No. Now leave the white alone. Once you finish with your yellow and they start adding more Kohler whore, yousef it and do a little bit or soft blending to remove the harsh lines around the rings. You don't want too many straight lines on. Your nebulous imperfections are always welcome. Once you're happy. Keep cleaning your brush and blended. Keep in mind that even white inks can lose that vibrancy. A little bit, so I decided to take some of the paint away from the brush and make more stars. The more paint you have in your brush, the larger the stars are, and with less paint, the smaller this stores are going to be. - Let's grade some halos around the stars. Corner to Corner Style: Thank you so much for staying all this way with me because I want to show you my favorite style by now. I hope you already have a general idea and helped to start painting your nebula. But let me summarize the steps. Use your blacks first to create a the shape form off your galaxy. Use your darker callers on the age close to your black. Use your lighter caller on the center of your nebula. Orosz far away from the black. Keep your paper wit at all times. Drop the caller on top of the wet black to one crate moment to to break the lines. Blend lift your callers create the stars and create the hell lives. Now back to our painting, the brand that I'm using for my black Kohler activates beautifully if I add water and let it sit for a minute, making it easy to blend later on. And I tried many, many blacks in all of them, performs almost the same. Do not be afraid to wait of eat well. You work on other areas and then come back to drop the caller on top of the black and then blend the only rule is that the paper needs to be, at least on the damp a stage. That is why you see me painting over the black lines and then coming back with more caller , because it will be easy to move the pigments on both callers and lend them. But what I remember, I say to watch out if you brush creates drops outside the fibers, and this happened when you deep your brush into your water past the brush area. I'm adding now the corridors to the nebula, and on these one, I use more colors. I'm using the same process, adding the callers to the ages first, then blending them. Try to keep your brush clean as much as you can just to keep the collars bright once I finish color in the ages, I added another black layer in Why? Because the ages are wet and I want the new layer off the wet black in the wet ages to meet ambivalent by itself. So this is crucial for me to do, and that's where I get the comments about how well they just look on my paintings. The ages have to be the softer part of your nebula, and we create that by blending it with the black. Now, let me leave you for a moment that for you to see what I said are you because these area is wet? I'm taking that opportunity to add the caller on top of the black, makes them together and then adding more Kohler in pushing that Kohler into the black and let them flow the way that want. And because I took my time on that area, the pink and violet was drying, so I added another layer of cooler. And then I added the black. I get to ask very often about the amount of water I use in here. We go with the same story. I keep telling you, No, your weather. Kohler's know your paper and know your brushes. This is new, they knowing your brushes. But it's true. There are papers that can stand the amount of water I use. There are brushes that whole a lot of water in others are not. The brushes I keep using over and over again are the ones you're looking at the screen right now, and if you notice I'm deep in my brush ones and thus no for me to work for a while, and I know arches love water. It's what I've been saying. I found the perfect marriage between my paper and my brochures. So arches in the brand fluid 100 love a mop brushes love water. Now, if you notice pools of water on your paper, know that your drown in the paper and I'm guilty for doing that pretty often. So you need to change your paper or you need to try different brushes. If you keep working, Ace in more area and you keep sinking your brunch several times because the weather is not enough will be that Yes, you are no use in the right paper or the right brush. Give yourself time to experiment with your materials in. I'm adding a bone section where I show you on Lee by photos because I was not planning to do it. But I'm showing you how I use me scraps of paper. And before I had scraps, I used to cut the first watercolor paper from my pad into little squares to play with them with my aquatic callers. And after that, I'm going to grab a clean brush, and I start brushing the ages to give it a more wispy look and to start lifting the color. If you don't see any lifting, use more pressure on your broad strokes and keep cleaning your brush. We owe and you're done, and let's at at the stores. Next, deep your brush into the white ink. Remove the excess off it in tap that brush with a second brush on top of the painting. Make sure your brushes are not that close to the paper. I don't use the toothbrush because clearly I don't know how to use it and I just create lines off stars and the two brushes gives me more control in mawr off a organic feel to it . Next, we're going to grab the pastels with the cotton swabs and tap over some stars and remove the excess with a brush. Some papers have a smooth surface that is going to be even hard for the past ills to adhere . The paper that I'm using right now it's arches and has quite a texture, like sent type of texture, and that is even hard to blend. But if your pastor vanishes, then make more than one layer. I use white and yellow color to create the stars. The pastels are going to deem the brightness of your stars, and that is why I go over and repaint them with a whitey gel pen and you are done. I'm going to leave you to enjoy the rest of the BDO, and thank you so much for taking my class. Practical Uses: the's are some ways used through time to practice either color combinations, different forms of Navy allies, such in my watercolors testing my new watercolor papers. And that is what I was doing in here test in a couple of different brands of paper because I heated pan on my watercolors with no success on my paintings, and I was still trying to figure it out how to work them, and I decided to add these bottles lesson for you to have a better visual and interesting enough. It's at the time I was making this experiment is when I realized how to work and the ends and how this class came alive, I added some sorry or even to some of them at the last minute, just for you to see the completed project.
