1. Introduction: Hello. Welcome to this Garrett Ban course. My name is Thomas George. I'm a composer and producer and they taught thousands of students all around the world Music theory, music production. So this garish bank course is for anyone that's brand new to music software or digital audio workstations. Like garish Band in this course got loads of stuff to show you. We're gonna start off but actually making a song in Gary's bond. So I'm gonna show you how to record 48 software instruments and also MIDI. We're then going to look at Apple loops, arrange in exporting on the preferences. So if you're brand new to music production, you want to start making music in Gary's band right away. And I definitely recommend this course. Thank you for listening, and I'll see you in the course 2. Getting Started: Okay, So when we create a new project or a new file in Garrett banned by going to file a new the top left, we got this public box here. So this gives us a load of different presets to choose from. So a preset is basically just a selection off instruments and sounds that are already there for us to choose from. I do personally believe it's better to start with a blank slate and to choose an empty project. But I'll just explain what some of these presets are in case you want to go through and have a look at them. So we have keyboard collection, which is basically just a selection of different keyboards and synthesizers on collection so you can use Garrett bangers and amplify. You don't necessarily need to have a load of different guitar amplifier sitting to carry around the Marshall Offender off box or orange jump. You can just use some ants that sounds similar in Garrett Band. You will, however, need an audio interface to plug your guitar. In its on audio interface is a box that converts and look signal, So unlock signals was a microphone like this or a guitar a bass and converts it into digital signal so you can plug it into your computer so you will need the audio interface to do this. I use the scarlet to I to buy Focus, right? That was two inputs. You can use that or something similar, but you will need an audio interface to record a guitar, a bass or even microphone. Then we have voice. So this has a loaded, different vocal presets for spoken word Mel vocals, female vocals, that kind of thing. Then we have Songwriter, which will have some drum loops on, will have a guitar amp set up on also vocal preset set Up. Like I said, for this, you will need an audio interface as well, the electronic one that you will not need the audio interface because it's all software instruments or virtual instruments provided by carriage bands. So this is a solid blend of drum kits and pulsating, Simpson says here then, next this we have hip hop, so this is a mixture off drums on unlocks imps that we have ring tone in case you want to make a ring tone and going down. We have the tempo so This is basically the speed of the song. So tempo is measured in BPM, or beats per minute on different genres of music have different tempos, so hip hop music is generally between 90 and 110 beats per minute. Generally, um, the house music is 122 beats per minutes. Either AM or electronic dance music has 1 to 8 beats per minutes. Trap music, or DUBSTEP is 140 beats per minute. On Drummond Base is 170 beats per minute there, just a few at the top of the head. Of course, a lot more dramas on that. And of course, you can break the rules. You don't have to use a specific beats per minutes to create a genre. You can put whatever you want, but that's kind of outline. I'm gonna choose 1 to 2. So can you move this by here to choose our tempo? Actually type in here as well. The river tempo on ahead, so this you could just tap him on the mouse. That comes up about but 1 to 2 as well, so you can type in the tempo you can choose the key signature. We can change this once we're in garish bands. That's good to start up with the key. Let's just stick to see Major. There's all different ones we can choose well, confused. Minor. And we have time signature. So most songs are going to be in four for just four crutches in the barn. Four beats in a bar That's just a standard 12 Free for 1234 But other songs which is a waltz? 12312312 Free isn't free. Four or sung such as money by Pink Floyd is in 54 or take five by Dave Brubeck is in 54 input device. This is if we've got a audio interface plugged in right now that have one plugged him. So no driver on output device. I'm gonna change this to hates the m I. Because I'm using an external monitor using a laptop. Just a laptop alone or Matt book are recommend a select inbuilt in output if you want to go for your arguments, faced output through ordered or the interface. So basically, plug the speakers in the back you audio interface or put your headphones into audio interface. It will come down here and to select it there. That's all we basically have to do to start new projects. I'm going to choose empty projects and then just go down and hit. Great. I'm gonna change this tempo to 1 to 2 C major for four. Change this too hasty in my just double check before you actually hit Crate. Of course, you can change this one short in. Garish, abundant. All we have to do is hit. Choose this will open up a blank project. Okay, the next lecture begins. Have a look at the next section. And then we came to jump in, start making some sirens and creating some music. 3. Templates: hello in this lecture, going to be looking at a few of the presets for actually appear. Will me launch Carriage band? So we have empty project cable collection and collection, voice ringing tone, a hip hop Elektronik and songwriter. So I'm just gonna have a look at hip hop. For now, let's have the tempo at 100 beats per minutes casing that you see Major time sink for 44 on input device. I haven't got one plugged into this computer output device. Hates you might, because it's coming out of a monitor. That's cheese Choose. Okay, straight away your notice. There's a load of instruments here already being loaded Them open up. Musical typing with commanding K. We can hear what some of these Try this. Let's try this one deep sub base. These are kind of traditional hip hop electronic sounds, huh? Radio? Some of these This is quite nice. You don't need a midi keyboard. You can use musical typing by him commanding K. This will appear so let's just close this night not going to save it And thats open up keyboard collection. So this is gonna have a large collection off different keyboards So here we go. We have a piano communicate electric piano organ Classic 86 is in the. Besides such bases loaded, different people drums, just keyboards. This one has kind of a drumbeat built in. Really, it's just template. I personally prefer starting off for a blank project. You can always choose instruments you want later. Rum. Yeah, it just gives you Mork customer customization rather than using their sounds. But if you just want to quickly jump in and make music straightaway, the templates or the presets useful otherwise you will have to go through and select the instruments you want over the library section over here. That's just a quick run through off these templates that we get worth carries. Bond. I do suggest going for all of them, just playing around. Get a feel for the sounds. One. My favorite things about Gary's band. It's just jumping in and play music to make music so quickly of loops recording midi, even recording audio that will be shown you in this course. So thank you for watching this lecture. It's really just about this presets that appear when we start a new project 4. Software Instruments: okay, so continuing on we have this pop up box that appears so This has software instruments, audio on drummer. So allows us to choose different tracks. Software instruments is a virtual instrument, so this is stuff like string sounds, synthesizers, piano sounds. And then we can play these with a MIDI controller on Midi keyboard. When there's little keyboards or we can actually play on our apple keyboard, we can use her Apple Mac keyboard as a musical keyboard, or we can actually physically type in the notes using the mouse, then going along. We have audio so we can record a microphone, and also we have audio for guitar so we can set up a guitar, a bass amplifier on GarageBand. Like I said, you will need the audio interface to do. This will come back to this a little bit later on by audio interfaces. And then we have drummer. So drama is where Gary kind of record lows of dramas, playing those different loops we can go through and change these loops and actually sounds quite realistic. It's pretty good. This is the way of doing if you don't want to physically type in the drumbeats or you don't want to record a drum kit. You could just use drummer toe just frozen loops together it really quickly and really easily. So for now, I'm just going to choose software instruments on. Let's just hit Crate. Okay, You notice all this stuff appear. So here we have musical typing way. Have virtual keyboard appear. Um, so this is the keyboard, and you can actually play these notes without keyboards over. Hit the button. A play. This note s will play the day who play day or plays a etcetera. So come play, uh, notes on here, which is pretty useful also how the pitch Banyan notice here, assuming a little bit. And then we also have a few more things as well. So we have something called modulation. So this is kind of the effects. We come out to the keyboard. So if we hit free on a Mac keyboard, this will be minimum modulation or completely off for have a small amount. Five more, six more seven or eight maximum. If you have a pair of headphones on now you're noticed that we have It's pulsating sign from left to right. Speakers has called a tremolo effect Waken Turn this off by hitting free Put on maximum again by hitting eight Let's turn it off For now we can use the pitch Bends by hit one nto Oh, Andi Sustain by hitting tab So I'm not holding the night night but sustaining I'm Susan. Let go of the tab Key Want Teoh! Stop! Have active! So going open down the keyboard. So you see this keyboard here? So for her ex gets higher Hi! And said lower on then wave velocity. We've see Invasor. Velocity is how How hard is being hit? So zero is off and then 1 to 7 is maximum velocity. So let's pump this up a bit. That's hit V and I'm just going to tap one of these keys. You notice it's really loud. Just tap tapping it gently. I'm gonna hit C. Put it down to about here, topping it same weight. And it's much quieter so it can change this with the lusty. And if we hit this button here will change to this kind of keyboard. I much prefer this one, which is called musical typing. If we hit the key command Command K, this will bring musical typing. So just hit command. Okay, that's open and close it. Or we could just hit this little red arrow here or go to window show musical typing up here . This will show musical type him. Okay, We have these controls down here which we call macro controls that basically control a lot of the keyboard so we can have bell. You can hear this a better bell signed trouble makes it sound brighter. Based, more base drive tremolo. It goes in there, left to right. Ambience adds a bit of river and then we have chorus gives that kind of Faizi octave sound on river. You can just go through and change some of these smart controls. This is car that the basics of actually getting started. So going on left here, which you have these controls as well, so have all different sounds. We've got bass drum kit, electric drum kit, guitars, mallets, orchestra progression, but percussion, piano synthesizers, organ club, electric piano, arpeggio to Chinese traditional legacies. There's loads of different ones here. So you actually go through and just have a look at some of these as well. So the best thing to do is to just click on the mall and just experiment and hear what they sound like. So I'm just going Teoh opened up musical type in, and you might get this pop up windows. Well, that says you have made changes to the current instrument management settings. Click Save as to save your current changes to custom Instrument. So basically, I've changed this keyboard sound This electric piano, Stan, I've messed around the knobs of change the sound of it so I could change this to the default instrument. I can change this instrument, so if I click continue it will get rid of all the new sounds off a click. Save us, it will save. This is a new sound. So for now, I'm not going to say that. I'm just gonna hit Continue. That's it. Commanding K on this cable to come up you notice thistle a different sound. So just go through all these. This one's quite fun Drums. So these notes on your Mac keyboard Well, the buttons on your mat cabled will turn into a drum kit So we have the tea and the wire high hats. These use open hi hats that I is a craft symbol. The pay is a ride Cymbal. That and then we have a few of the ones that a kick from She just hit the r button Blackstone there. So our does actually shortcuts record. So I have a look at that a bit more detail later on. But basically, if you want to record these sounds just hit our and that will record. Or you could hit this big red circle appear. Okay, so you have s is a snap. So do is the snare as well. So he is a clap debuts kind of rim shots. Let me have sometimes as well going along here from F two. No. So just play along. You can actually play the drums on your Mac cable. This is pretty funny. It's quite hard state first, but what you can do is you can just play each individual instrument at the same time. You don't have toe play. The whole drum kit had just played the kick drum thin at the snare after and at the high hat. You don't have to play all the one go. That's good fun to play. Although one go lows. The different drum kits here as well. Rep. Troyer up. Try smash. Okay, that's good from Elektronik Drum kits. Let's try this one. Okay, lows, the different ones. I'm not going to go through them all, but it is good fun. Just go through and test out these sands of guitar. So this meant to sound like a classical guitar can change up to, of course, with X. It's quite hard to do, but you can get some interesting sounds, especially if you don't want to play different. Too difficult to technical. Something like this is manageable on the musical typing keyboard. Of course, if you do have a MIDI keyboard or MIDI control upon those little keyboards, plug in via USB, and it should just sync up automatically. A few different one hard rock. So this obviously going to bay some distorted? Okay, Percussion lows, the stuff Studio Latin. Sometimes you have to change the operatives to get the sounds up, because the don't have sounds in every single note on the octave. Just be careful. That's especially the drums. You might have to go through the octave to find where they are. Piano. Okay, that's emphasizes. There's loads had to choose from. Got a new kind e g M ones. When I first started using GarageBand a long time ago, it didn't look like this interface has got a lot cleaner and looks a lot more professional now. So let's try chimes well on. Changed a lot of these symptoms as well. They do sound a lot better now. I've got leave pad. It is part down here as well, so you can see for just Suman changes the different sounds. A lot of bright filter mod de tune. It's movement. Head out the way thin soft phase of replacing the signs. You can just move this along. We've got DeLay and peak filter as well. So if you want to send this a bit out of two people on to Tune Way could choose fading LFO . It's low frequency oscillators that's kind of pulsating. Sound, right? Delay. Fickett want a chunkier, sound soft, thin filter mark? We can change this delay as well. On the peak filter. That's good fun as well. And so there's loads of different symptoms as well. Pad rhythmic strings, lows of interesting sound organs, arpeggio later. So on page eight are where it plays through the different notes. So if we just choose, let's say since basic, this will be in our pejeta. And also this message will pop up if unless we select this. So if it's let this person here do not show this message again, it won't come up again. This message basic means I've moved that simple round of change the sound Do you want to save the settings or just leave it as it waas? So if I hit, continue or just leave it as it wasif hit save as it will save the settings that I've actually changed, I'm just going to hit, Continue leave as it waas you can him hit? I'm hitting one note there. It's just repeating that night for hit hold two notes will go through the two notes. Free notes. Full nights, five nights. That's one harp educators. It just goes through the different notes. We've got lows, different presets here as well. Jittery pulses. Let's try this whole down. A few notes notice of you went headphones that goes for the left and right speaker as well . It gets really interesting sounds in garage band. I do just recommend just going through them all. You notice is well that you can scroll as well down here at the bottom. Left between the sounds, you can choose all different ones. Chinese legacy lows is different ones as well. These legacy ones have actually built up over the years, so you might not have all of these legacy ones just to let you know. But the piano wants the percussion you will have. Just make sure you download a lot of these. Synthesizers are a lot of these times as well, so good to guarantee band the top left sound library and make sure you download all of a all available sounds. So I just do that again. So if you go to the top, garish Bonds sound library, all available sounds and that's basically what you have to do, make sure all essential and all available sounds. Then you have pretty much all these sounds that I've got as well. And that's how you can get started in a garage band. That's how you can make music straight away. This is how we can actually make stuff and just start correcting. You start messing around, start finding some interesting fund samples. One of my favorite things is to just find fun Simpson's player around with simple and just get some call. Sam's the next lecture. We're going to look actually recording these sounds, so yeah, it's going to get a lot more for a lot more interesting. So thank you for this lecture on. I'll see you in the next one. 5. Making Music with Software Instruments: Okay, We're going to continue where we left off. So we begin to do now is just record something in notice this player had here this this line, This is where we are in the track and this has a time value going along. So on the left it will say 1.1, which means one bar on one date. If we drag this along well, actually change. So if you put it to four, it will say Bar four. Beat one because we have four beats in a bar in a temper of 4412341234 So it's 123412 I'll be here, says Bharti, beating them. Afraid so. Let's just put on one on one. So Bar one beat one. That means it's right at the start and the third you go along, we just go through the bars and it becomes further along the song. Okay, so all we have to do to record is make sure this button here is selected, which is a metre. Name a mention. It will keep you in time. It's also known as a click cook just to keep you in time. I'm sure you've seen them. The old fashioned ones actually have a wind up click, click, click. And then we have the countin So 1234 This will just give us four beats or one bar before we start playing. So we know the temporary No, the speed to actually record so we have to do is even. Here are two record or hit this red button here. I'm just gonna play something them. But the active down this active just could use the keys here on my Mac keyboard. So let's just play something in. The great thing about digital audio X stations is if you place him from wrong, it doesn't matter. Just do it again. It's not like you have to pay for the tape like the old fashioned days. You have to cut the tape out or put on the Reel Inn, you know, even paying for studio time nowadays, just doing on mainly laptops. It's the day and age we live in this so grateful recording music. It's the largest. So much for reading to experiment because if you play it wrong, it doesn't matter. So let's just record something in right now. That's just that just two bars. If we drag appear, your noticed that we have this arrow sign, which means it's going to loop. So if we drag it along, this will loop ever we had. If we put down that this, this will extend out what recorded. So I don't want that Lupin Right now, I would actually put this perfectly in time to do this. We have to use something called Quanta izing. So if you double click on this and we just assuming down here, we can actually move these notes along like so committed. Open down the keyboard. I think this is just a piano just kind of put on its side. This here. So it's really just a keyboard from that side on. Going across is time value and opened down his note values. It's kind of like a grid, so we could just move these and those that are not quite in time. If you have a look here, only thing we can do, we can just drag this information or MIDI information. It's called because it's not actually notes this information sent to the computer and recorded them on this information triggers the software insurance or triggers a sound so it can move this information or we can drag it across. Do something called quanta izing. So Kwan ties in Basic just snaps this to nearest grid value. You can choose the grid value here. You could choose 1/16. Notes. 1/8 Notes. 1/4 notes. So one courts knows his eats beat in the bar on the choose 1/8 notes. You notice that that one actually just changed. That moved. That's from just quanta izing who? A few different options is what we have. Time Khan ties. Which is, of course, the note value. We have triplets, so triplets is where we complicating a bit more. So we put free notes in the space to or we can swing it. So for a bit more of a jazz field can change like that to pull its as well, which is five notes in space of 45 nights to space. Eight more complicated 17 to play eight to peanuts. But for now, let's just choose 16th notes. We don't swing it. We have a look at this a bit later on Mork kind of jazzy music But for now, we're just gonna have 16th notes of the strength. If you If you notice this is actually moving here, let's just do that again. So if you move the strength, you can see notes actually changing this one here notes moving forward and back if you want it completely. Qantas, Sometimes you don't want it fully Kwan ties because you can lose a bit human element. But for now, we're just gonna have this fully quanta ized. Then we have transposed. So transpose is we actually move the next to a different one. So let's just play this back. He entered to go to the star. Transposition is on zero. We're gonna put this to minus 12 and this will be an octave lower should notice is lower, but on plus 12 which is an octave higher. So this plus 12 12 semi tones of 12 semi tones of octaves are basically it's a whole chunk higher. If it's plus 12 a whole chunk or whole octave lower. It's plus 12. My air minus 12 plus seven is 1/5. Minus seven is 1/5 notices higher. Skelly This on zero. We recorded our first instrument end it really is that easy a case? The next we can add a new management. So let's just hit this plus bottom. Let's choose a software Egemen again on your notice. This new truck comes up. Let's choose another symptom. Enjoying this emphasizes. Let's try synth bass on Let's open up musical typing by Hit Command K. Okay, let's do that. And let's just drag this over. So is the loop. You'll notice at the top. Get this loop arrow and then click up here. You'll see this, this grey bar If we hit this great but would go orange. So whatever is in this orange Ariel just loop round and round and round. So let's just leave this Lupin and then when we play okay, back to the start again. Okay, so let's just do the same kind of thing. Hit Command K. I'm just gonna record in a bass part, given me account and also because the countenance selected on also leave the match in Oman because this Purple metro name is selected. So all I'm gonna do is hit our to recall and play in the baseline. A want just that on same is performed. Double click on this and then select all these. I can use a key command, command eight or just physically direct. More like so and then leave the Kwan tires on 1/8 and hits Cuban here. And this will put this in time. Let's hear this back just to see if it's got it right. That wasn't quite right place. So I can hit Command and Z one day on your changes quantities to 1/16 notes because it it seemed like it. It wasn't in the right place. Let's just have a listen there. That's it. 18 wasn't right because I was actually playing notes that quicker than 1/8 was playing. Notes that 16th notes. So the plane on different divisions here, Let's leave on 16th notes on Let's hit this loop button Here, abstract this over and now we've got a little loop. Go home. The case. We're really just getting the basics off right now. Loot now is so simple on one thing I'm going to show you now it is really important is to save so profile, save us. We call this example project, and now this is saved because one thing you don't want to do is create some and then computer crashes. For some reason, it's gone. You do get also safe function on GarageBand. But I wouldn't rely on that. I would just put something yourself. Okay. Lets just putting a drum kit. Now let's put some drums in. She's software instrument will have a look at drama later on. For now, we're just gonna manually put it in. Okay, so let's go on to drum kit. Let's try Elektronik from can. Actually, Leon, that sounds interesting. Command K. You noticed that isn't kick Drum. So we gotta go for the actives, have a guy, and now I'm just gonna type in. Came from to free four. Okay. It wasn't quite in time. Same as before. It's double click on that and then just drag this over. Ongoing changes to leave on eighth notes and key. It's just corrected. Some of it. One thing we can do as well as if we hit command button on a Mac keyboard. This will create a pencil tool. So this allows us to actually draw in some more and more information here. So hold down the pencil tool. I can put in a snap this will just create a snap. Signed. He's gonna get rid of this. Let's just say human again, Okay? So if I hold down the control, I don't wanna put snare here on that Say, here in type M. So now let's listen to this back way. We don't have to actually play the same weaken. Type it in a swell. So this is a different way of recording Music is to just type m. You could do the same or hi hats. We have a look at musical type him. Remember the hi hats on this t and this wife or close enough open for you. So this is F sharp G shop a shop. So if you don't really know what the Sharps means, just go through until you find it. So that's want There's one. So now I'm just going to type in some of these. Remember the hold down command. Forget it. Run like that. You can always just clicking it, backspace to delete, and then just put it in again at the end of going to finish with open high hat. Let's move it up. Let's hear this back by hitting space bar. Really simple. I'm not even just changed this a little bit. Let's just zoom in on Let's put more of them in here. So we have a go free like this or could day? It's just so let them hold on, hold to copy all of a Mac applications and just drag the men. I'm gonna delete some of these. Leave the last one and this dragon over, hold down bolts and then we can just do this. Let's just do this on drugs all over, okay? This is just a really quick way of making the beat. This is just how I normally like to dip. I'm going a bit too fast. Just remember, hit this plus button up here to create a new instrument. And you can either use musical typing on the keyboard to actually play inside hit command K . You can play in manually or you can play in your keyboard, not by clicking the mouse, or you can even just draw in like this, which is really simple. Now let's have a listen to this. The high hat should be a bit faster. It should sound a bit more bait. Okay, great. The thing is, I think this high hats a bit loud, so I can do just to ragtime all this well. And remember we talked about velocity earlier. So if a lot its velocity is how hard the notes sounds or how hard that is being hit. So if we select them all, we can change all of these notes velocities. So drag all the high huts down. But we have to do is hit this velocity bar down here 77. At the moment, that's changes to about 40. Let's hear this back. I still think it's too hard. Let's bring it down even further. 2 16 Okay, let's put this snares up. But higher. We can do as well as add on another snacks if you hold on. Hold, clap. Ok, Okay. Great. And then we could just use this loop function here. I never got a beat. We've got keyboard sound a baseline and we got a drum kit. Now we've got that pulse that kick drum. Let's just turn the velocity up for this. It's now we select the kick, the velocities up. You can tell because of lost. Here's 1 to 7, which is maximum velocity. So now we've got a kick, which is the pulse it's blonde to free for. We don't need the Metrodome. So we can actually turn off this match name by hitting a click button here and now we play it back, you won't be able to hear the click, because when you hear track back, you don't really want that being played because that can be a bit annoying. So let's play this back. Okay? Great. Changed in these is while we can go for and move, some of these about get a bit more river because now this MIDI data is in this drum kit, we can move some of this data around to create something a bit more interesting. And this will also copy over the lip. You'll see these lips changed. Whenever I change the information in the main clip, it will continue this in the cologne, so copy over in the lip. So I'm just gonna meet some of these around just trying to get some of the bit more interesting gun really simple. Okay, that's that's what this sounds like so we can do just go for an experiment. I spent a lot of time just leaving drum sounds around just try and get something a bit more interesting because sometimes just a straight can get a bit bored. Now I think that sounds a lot more interesting. So all they've really done is just played it in different parts, starting with this jittery pulse, which arpeggio on a musical type in by hitting command K and then out of the base of musical type in of Quantities Dept. What does a collect on the information and it's come up here for dragged us over to the main one? You can just see here you can just quantities it by just selecting it and hitting a que bottom. Then Addison drums. I just played a one part that hit the command button and just drew in new parts. Then remove these parts open down his piano here, which will give you different drum Sam's. That's basically how I created a beat. I started off with a Metro mom, and I want to get a bit going once I gotta groove going, turned the match them off. That's really how you can jump in and make a beach straight away. However, having gone too fast, realize how funny. How easy is to actually make music in Gary's Bond. There's one thing we going through all the technical other months, like the preferences or the bit rates. But it's more about making music. That's what I find really for making music. So I hope you can actually follow what I've done here and start to create your own music in garish bands. So thank you for watch this lecture. I hope you found it useful, and I'll see you in the next one. 6. Recording a Microphone: Hello and welcome to this lecture. In this lecture, we're going to have a look at recording audio. So before you record any kind of audio, you need to have something called an audio interface. The only one to face that recorded this microphone in now into another piece of software is called The Focus, Right, Scarlett to I to but the one I'm gonna show you in this example, it's a small portable audio interface. It's called the Shore X to you. It's a very small, portable audio interface. On you can plug in the USB, the back here, and also you can plug your microphone in here. I'm gonna be showing you with this microphone right here, which is the road. The end tg one. It's a shotgun microphone. Just go to show how to set up in a garage band. So the first thing you need to do is get your audio interface. Most them will have USB. It's plug your USB into your Mac. That's so I'm just gonna plug this in right now, okay? And now you need to get the end of your microphone cable end of your XLR cable at this and pluck this into your microphone, let's say and plug it into audio interface. And then you get some kind of lights. Most of them will have something called Phantom Power plus for 48 volts. This microphone does need phantom past. I'm gonna make sure this is selected, Okay? It and you'll notice here we've actually got his pop up appear says, Do you want to use the audio device? Short digital, Which is this This is sure digital You can change the order device later. And Garrett Bond. So basically saying do you want to use this audio interface or not on a do? So I'm going to click use case. And now it is going to initiate this. Just so you know, just gonna close this heck and just Iraq down. And now I'm going to actually open up and audio tracks to hit his plus button here and now that's choose audio. Choose this one record using a microphone or line input. And here you can choose input, input one and two and put one and two. And here it says below, my instrument is connected with Shore digital, which is the name of this audio interface. So This is not a plugged in and you could select this button here as well. Which says, I want to hear my investment As I play in record. I want to hear from Shore Digital. If we select this button here, we open up the preferences. So the preferences will basically tell you what's going on. What's coming out. So in the output to be the hasty my which the monitor I'm using. But when the input to bay the short digital, which is this microphone. Okay, then we have effects enable all the units. So if you want but the effects on their midi. But for now, let's just leave it out. Put what you want. The sounds come out off. I want the sounds come out of this. It's monitor amusing because the headphones plugged into that in the input come from this order interface, which the microphones plugged in tape. Okay, so let's just ah, it great. And now when I talk, I'm gonna put my headphones on. I can hear myself, but so I wanna talk into this. You can actually hear it if I arm it like so. So this button here arms the track So that means you can hear it back. Its record ready its record ready anyway. But this button input monitor it. So that means if you press this, you can hear it back. So I was talking to this. You can hear back. I just, uh, controls on this audience face which will get on my game. I noticed that it gets a lot louder. Want or don't want it to go in the red, I'd probably have it about here. It's a good signal. You can see that is a good single contemporary. So for just see him in here. You can see this signal here. It's nice to start, which is what we want. So we can just record. And now So just gonna hit record and just you like So I just put that I'm gonna tear enough input monitoring, which is this button here and now We can only hear this microphone. No, this one as well. Okay, let's just play this back. Just good. Lip was first to actually just have those two and then just loop these remember dragged the way you want it on. DSA leapt atop to loop. And then we've got these effects on the left here. So we got voice all different types of voice. So let's just go through some of these. I just got a solo. That's now. So if you press this heads phone button here, this will actually so low the trance tracks. So just play this one. We hit this button here, this one muted, so turned off you can see with colors. Here, this one goes gray, which means it's muted on your notice when we hit the headphone that this yellow will appear, Which means it's so load input monitoring. Sitting here like this. Turn up meaningful monitor so you can't hear this back solo with headphones mute with a speaker with her line for it. Okay, and what is a different effects? Let's just go through some of these, but but but but but but but but but But but but up experimental has some interesting ones. Let's just try these, but, uh, but But I think a lot of classic vocals. Best. Let's hear this in the mix by press nous, headphone button display back chains, the effects down here. So I want to add some more effects we can do that. So we have to do is just change some of these. So we can actually, yeah, increase the echo sandal out a bit more River changed in case compression. So compress and make Basically, mates allowed stuff a bit quieter. Quite stuff a bit loud. It makes the sound waves go like this. So the loud stuff, quite a quite stuff louder. You can see from these lines here. What's compressing. So if a house is blue dots appear, it means it's compressing. Okay, great. I think that's a bit loud. I just want in the mix in the background, so I'm gonna turn it down. So if we use this dial here, this will actually affect the volume. Make it louder or quite us. It's put there, and also here will have different things. Like where we have it in the headphones. Who left speaker right speaker Put to one side and down little bit. Let's hear this back in the mix. Just hear it now in your right hand phone or speaker. That's basically how we set up an audio interface and how we can record a microphone. Thank you for this lecture. I hope you found it useful. I'll see you in the next one 7. Record an Acoustic Guitar: Okay, so now we're going to have a look at recording on acoustic guitar, so it's quite similar to a setting up a vocal. So let's go over and actually create a new track. So Samos before I do have this audio interface, plug them. Which is this one over here? Sure X to you, it's a little portable audio interface. I use this whenever I'm kind of traveling around or not in a studio. I just take that one with me because it's really light and portable is quite inexpensive. So we have to do is hit this plus button. Unless choose. Let's choose this audio track as well. Record using a micro final line inputs. So not really guitar amplified because this is going to be an acoustic guitar, so we don't really want amplifier. We just want to recall the audio. So let's choose import input one. Andi, remember, have it all set up here. My instrument is connected with sure digital to make sure you audio interface appears here , you click this button here to set up your input and output. So this is kind of ah preferences, So make sure the output is set wherever you want to hear the sound from? I've got my headphones plugged into this external monitor. So on the output to be the hasty my, which is the monitor and input. This is your audio interface. The case. Let's just close that. Andi, that's it. Great. When they hear this microphone back, I hit this button here, which is and put on the drinks over. Hit this. You'll be able to hear me talk if once a solar, it's this one on it wanting you to Is this one kind of the easy ready. So that's just soon the site. I'm gonna hear this back then, uh, record something that just got us accused of time here. I'm just gonna quickly just record something. Moved the headstones at the way. One thing is you one of the points, the microphone to sign holes. Science. My extreme points that sound here and then literally all have is Here are two record, and I'm just gonna play something really quickly. Someone that's be a bit allowed the game. Little quite quiet. Some was good. Good. I don't want to about that. I have this tape. Okay, let's say position and then that's just the way because you'll be able to him in this microphone voice. Let's hear it back. It was a bit of a peak there. You can see. I'm not too happy about that. Lets her back. I think I'm not really happy with that performance. So I think just playing again this time gonna have input monitoring off. I'm just gonna hit our to record and basically just play in again. That's the thing. If you play something not too happy with it, you can just do it again. I'm not really a guitarist from a guitar playing won't be the best, but just put some ideas and quickly and you notice when I record that went round, round, round there's actually loads of different takes So you can see select which take you want here. So you know, just this number free. If I click on this, this will take Take one, take one We'll take free. I like take tooth Let's let this we look at take free as well we can drag corn about Okay, let's try this. Drag it to their then choose the takes that we do have to Money can also delete the unused takes as well. So that's here, this back. And just hear what this sounds like. I probably wouldn't use an acoustic guitar in this song like that, so I don't really think it fits. And to be honest, I'm not really a guitarist. But that's how you set up. It's the same as the microphone. Basically, if the sensibility interface point the microphone at the whole on, do that. So next we're gonna have a look at recording an electric guitar, which is quite similar. Yeah, I wouldn't really use, like a timeless style music personally, if you are in a good guitarist and you want to start recording some guitar parts in Gary's banned, All we Have to do is hit this plus But, um, choose order there. And of course, we do have different presets and effects for acoustic guitar as well. Let's just record something new in once again, so select the audio slept input and then it's gonna record something really quickly. And then we can just have a look at some of the amplifiers while we're here might as well to say that these waves away too big, actually clipped in distorted. That's one thing, you have to be aware it's not having a gain able to relax. So about that, let's try that again. So don't want it to distort because if it distorts, will ruin the recordings. Always, always be careful again. Level. Have a small gain level like that well than to have bank gained levels that clips or distorts because if eclipsed distorts, it's not gonna sound very good. To be honest, let's hear this back. Wait. So the first half was fine. The second half was awful. Let's just keep that so drag it back, loop over, and now you have a few different facts. So I'm gonna hit this headphone button to surly. That's nice Course. You always have to be aware that your guitars in tune because that's slightly after him. That's basically how you can record the acoustic guitar GarageBand. So for singer songwriters, this is really useful. So if you just want to sing and play guitar, you do need in order interface, and you will need one of more than one channel. If you want to have more than one microphone, so just be careful of that 8. Microphones: Hi. In this lecture, I'm going to tell you about different types off microphones, so we do actually have three different types of microphones. Dynamic microphone, condenser, microphone on ribbon, microphone. So a dynamic microphone is similar to this one here, so it's quite durable. You might have seen the shore sm 50 x kind of typical microphone that people have on stage . It is quite strong and durable, so this microphone is called on electro voice. Ari 20. Just move this up so you can have a better look out. So this is designed for voiceovers. It's a very durable Micah's well is quite expensive. This cost about $400 but this is very good for any kind of radio work voiceovers, actually, very good Recording a bass guitar as well. Do you get a lot of us be microphones as well, so you don't always have to spend a lot of money on the mic like this. The other type of Mike I mentioned is a condenser microphone similar to this one, so not more lightweight. Yeah, it's a lot smaller lot. Finner. There's a lot more fragile as well. A lot. People will use this for movies. So it's a shotgun. Mike Circum pointed up. What you want to point to. You do need phantom power. So this was quite an extra 48 volts. So you will need phantom power to record this and never type is a ribbon microphone. I don't actually only real microphones because of one reason that really fragile. If you drop it by accident or break, I can be quite clumsy of microphones have dropped, I think all of my microphones before so I don't really want a ribbon microphone. It can have a very bright sound and come pick up a lot of sounds that can be very useful. But for me, it's not worth it, just in case I drop it so that the three types dynamic and then we have Yeah, convincer and ribbon. The dynamic Mike's as well can be used for recording, say, like a bass drum. So the real low frequency, because it can handle a lot more power, a lot more sound. The dynamic Mike's Yeah, there are a lot more durable than these condenser microphones. A condenser microphones can pick up a lot more bright sound that can be very good for say female vocals. There's just a different types of Mike. You can spend a lot of money on microphones, so if you're just starting out, you can get you a speed microphones, which were fined for voiceovers like this but wouldn't really use them for recording any instruments. If you're just starting out literally, just grab any microphone. If if you're on a bit of a budget, maybe start with a short S and 57 kind of the jack of all trades, Microphone will cost you about $100. Or you could have sure, sm 58. But that's more for life performance. Yeah, one, Mike Shure sm, 57 recommends. For singer songwriters, that's fine. It picks up vocals, fine picks up guitar, fine convict drums and percussion. Fine wouldn't really use it for picking up, say, a bass drum. But if you just starting out and Gary when you probably won't be recording a full drum kit to start with, so if you want, do the voiceovers I recommend getting a dynamic might like this one. This one can be fined voiceovers to, but really depends on your budget. I don't really recommend you any microphones because you can't spend hundreds, even thousands of pounds of microphones. If you're just starting out making music, you do want to record any kind of vocals or any instruments would start up with a reasonably cheap price. One. I did like the shore s and 57 still about $100 but for a moderate price one, I think you can't go wrong with that. So do you get people ask me all the time. Which microphone do you recommend Andi for? What's your budget? What you want to record that's more the question. So for a high end budget will get stuff like a 414 which is amazing, but we'll cashew about $1000. Well, for voice overs, one that desperate like a cell, is about $400 or so, maybe more. But just don't have a look at the shore s n. 57. So this let's just just quick one about microphones, just to tell you the three different types dynamic, the more durable one's stronger ones condenses, which can cost a lot more money also, but not a lot brighter. Convictable that more sound and ribbon, which are very bright as well, but they're very fragile. Which is why I don't have any. So thank you for this lecture, and I'll see you in the 9. The Interface: Hello, it's Thomas George, and now we're going to continue looking at Garrett Band. So so far we've jumped in. We've started to make music, recorded different parts, records from synth parts, some drums and also our microphone. Now we're going to actually have a look at the interface. So we're going to have a look at what stuff actually does in Garrett Band. So let's just go along and have a look up here on the easiest things we can do is actually have a look at this quick help. But in here. So if you have a look at this, this will actually just tell us what's going on. So it's his question mark up here. And if you'll notice lows, the stuff appear up here. So when quick help buttons on you can see we've got the sound library just down here. So this is a sound library. It tells us loads of different things that's going on. This is really useful. If you're just starting out on Gary's Bond, hit this quick help, but not here. And it's how you lows the stuff. So we have the transport control, which is this stuff over here. So the transport control is play bottom. Going back to the beginning. Fast forward rewind record on cycle buttons the cycle. But in actually turns this on a rough or we can actually use the key command. See safe, oppress. See, this will turn the cycle button on the rough going along. We have lows, more stuff as well. We have their temporary display. So this is It tells us to temper the track. The minutes 1 to 2, which means 120 beats per minute. So more minute, maybe 122 clicks or beats. Then we have the beat position. So this really tells us where we are. So move this over to, say five. This is Bar five. Beat one on when we're in the key signature off 44 Like we are here with the four on the four. This means there are four beats in a bar and this is about five feet one. So if move it slightly ever concedes beat two and again be free and before and then tow bar six. Then we have the key signature the moment. See, Major, choose whatever key signature you want. If you just starting out. I recommend just sticking with C Major to start with just because it's just the white notes on the keyboard. It's just really easy to follow. We've got a few of things here, have beats on projects. This shows us the beats on the projects in this LCD display. If we change this to beats in time, it would give us a time as well. I quite like having the beats in time. To be honest is good to know how long you want song. It doesn't really matter how long you have a song, but you might want to say for your for minutes song you can see where about you are Then we have beats, so this literally just soldiers the beats up here. You can change it to time. Generally you will want to know the time and the beats. But if you make in a film music and have a certain time point, all you need is the time you can change just by hitting this arrow button here a few other things as well. We have the tuna button so you can use this to tune your instruments to computer. So what you will need to connect this with no audio interface. You can plug in instruments to that and you contribute of that. Then we have the count in button. So this basically allows us to count in our on our track. Let's just change this back to beats on project so counted if we're recording, Ideally, you want to want to free four before we start. So we know when to start and we kind of get the tempo off the groove as well. So I always leave the counting button turned on. Then we have the metronomic or click depending what you call it. If you have a strong pulse from the drums, you don't necessarily need the Metrodome switch done. But if you don't have any drums record, then yet I definitely recommend leaving the Metro. I'm on the metro. They can get a bit annoying after a while. So you generally, when I've got a groove going in the song, I do turn the match name off. Okay. And then we have here the master volume slides. This changes the master volume. I really don't wanna over zero D, because over is already being might distort in clip. I generally like to have the master volume just locked on zero db and then I 10 individual track star in rather than just in the master personally, that's how I like to do it. Let's say you've got a track complete. It just needs a boost. The volume you can always boost up the master or just 10 it down. But generally I like to control the instruments for him over here. So here we have the volume Sliders, beach instruments. And then we have Ellen, are So this is the pan where we want the other instrument in a left or right speaker or left or right? Headphone says could be called the pan or the balance knob. Then we have this speaker headphone, which is a solo button. So this will play just this track way rest. So have this mute button turn off this track. Now we have a little picture off the truck. This is quite useful. Really? Because we can quickly see this is a simple part. Oh, this drum machine. Oh, this is Ah, some kind of audio. Some microphones you can quickly see by looking at what the tracks actually called if we double click on the tracks as well, we can actually rename these to call this, say synth. It's a simple one. Don't necessarily have to keep it whatever GARAGEBAND calls it, but just double collect to change name and notice when we click on different tracks as well . This area down here, well, actually changed. You can see here these boxes and it's like again is knobs. So yeah, this is Ah, this just allows us to quickly train controls on our engagement. So we have different ones generally for different instruments, just toe have different effects. We can quickly go through and change makes it really easy, straightforward to go through. Okay, Going along here, we have the catch button that looks a bit like a martini glass. So this really allows you to see your arrangement view actually go through the track. So if you're playing through and say, you get into a one minute, if you have this button selected, it'll just go through where you are. So it says here, keep the player had visible as a project place. So basically, you get to see this visible the whole time. When the project plays For now, this isn't really relevant because we've only got four bars. But when we start to build up more tracks, more parts, you might want to catch button turned up. Okay, we can add a new track by hitting this plus button here, and we do have the track selection here. New track. You cannot use the short cuts as well, so you can use the key commands Holt Command. And so do that that a new track as well We could just hit this plus button here. So all command and or the plus button that allows you to add a new track. This is really just the basics off the interface of God. Fun band is quite simple. It's quite easy to do. It's just know what this stuff does really in just memorizing somebody short cause if you go up here, you see, you have these different shortcuts undo command Z cut command, ex cetera. I'm not going to go through them all because I have quite few. Just remember, the most important ones mainly is their command desk for safe shift commanders for save as Andi Yeah, commands that from do. They're kind of the main ones really offer record, see for cycle. That's basically it. So we can turn off this quick help on if we want. If your brand you recommend us leaving this on just tells you what's actually going on in there just here we have the note pad button. So this is Yeah, a note particle on a odd. And he notes you can just Yeah, close them and open our notes. So if you want to quickly just add a note say, take two was the best. Take, for example, I make notes about my favorite takes. You just hit this note part, but in here and then you can write in Have you won? It's quite useful. Instead of you actually going down to, like, a text editor or word document, you can just do it all in here. Okay, Going along. You have the loops. So this gives us apple lips. It might take a moment or two to actually load when they do load. We have a lot of different Apple loops. You might not necessarily have as many as may. You might have to actually download more loops. So if you go to Garrett Band in the top left. Here you go to sound library. She download all available sounds or download essential sounds. This is where we have our loop. So we have a different drum beats samples. Just access them here that we have the media bribes the library with media browser. I don't really use this. To be honest, if you wanted to rag stuff in from your sex done the hard drive, your desktop, you can find them here. I normally dislike to drag in manually, but you can do it this way as well. And then, like I said before going down, we have these control buttons of, ah, macro displays That gives us a lot of easy options. We can change really quickly. Okay? And that's pretty much the Ah, yeah, the main interface off Garrett Bond. Course. If we hit this person, appear top left. We can open up a sign library. Dominican, Turn on quick help. We can turn on the controls down here. And then we have This is a but in here, which is for the editor. So if one to edit the audio, make sure you have This is a button open here. Want to edit the MIDI click on MIDI, and it really just changes toe what type of instrument you have. So, for example, right now we have, ah, audio selected, which is in Green Midi, which is in so agreed and audio, which is in blue. I mean you to select between the both and use editor here, but we have to make sure this says it'll is selected to turn on the editor. Like I said, it's just a quick overview off the interface off courage buns. Like I said, if you are brand new, make sure you just hit this quick help bottom. And when it selected yellow, just tell you what's going on is really handy. The design, it's really well, so you just know what's going on the whole time. Then you get the lips of a loaded for the we can choose genre. So, for example, electronic choose. Let's turn off this quick help. But, um, by hitting this question mark of a circle and then we can go through choose genres here the extra reset instruments, piano genre moods. So now we've selected a piano with genre urban moods grieving, so we have five different samples, we can choose sharp piano been ingredient To me. This sounds like a piano urban and grieving. That's basically the library. On the next lecture, we're going to actually have a look at making a track from the Apple Library. He'll garish bands, loops, but thank you again for this lecture. I hope you found it useful, and I'll see you in the next one. 10. Apple Loops: Hello. Welcome to this lecture. Now we're going to have a look at making music with some of the apple loops we have. So in garish band, we've got lows and loops on the right hand side here. You can actually go through and just collect some of them and see which ones we like. They're actually all royalty free. So you can just select free news, any of them in any way, shape or form in some of our tracks up here as well. We have this little area where we can actually go through and select some of the loops. So let's click on Instrument to start with, and that's choose percussion. And here we have all the percussion. So we just go through, have a listen to some of this. You can narrow it down even further by hitting tambourines. Click it again to close it shaker, Click it again to put it back. Conga. Hm? Bungei. Okay, You want to go back with all we have to his hit percussion again that reset this screen here. Let's try piano news any of these loops? One thing to mention is the loops that have green next to them are midi loops on the ones that have blue next time or audio loops. So many loops means you could basically change the notes around. So that's just a rag. One of these middle oops over. We dragged under instrument. It will create new investment here and there, says Grand piano. Let's just drag on these blue ones down underneath notice it's actually created on audio track. We know this because it has these waves, which are audio waves. Let's just delete these on hit backspace. Delete these tracks. Let's go back up here and now let's click on Genre. So that's hit piano again, and it will reset these instruments. Now we have genre rock, blues, country, jazz, funk, indie, chill wave lows, different ones as well. Thats quite experimental Lips weaken, try as well, and then we have moods. So try that trick. Relax, Doc. So that lows a different loops. We can choose here that this extra close it on. Let's just see night notice a few other things as well. Here we have something that says Luke, pack all John Rhys. Depending on if you actually download these loops, who will have a few more packs here to do this, go over to Garrett Ban in the top left, Go down to sound library and make sure you download all the essential sounds. So remember, just go to sound library, download the central sounds. I've got them all downloaded here. Actually, have quite a few weeks. I have been collected them over the years because I do use logic pro as well. And some of these loops are using logic pro as well as Garrett Band. Okay, we have this button here as well. It allows us to actually cough. Look at that. The loops in a different way. So let's just zoom in here on this button here, which has changed the way the loop library looks. So here we have genres, instruments, mood. So you can go for, like, this way. I personally prefer this button clicking. Wait, it seems a lot easier today. We call. So have this heart button here. So if you choose this, we can go through and actually select our favorites. I haven't actually selected any is favorites yet. So say this uplifting distributor. I could hit this button here which make it favor a favorite. And I want to hit this hard, but in here you'll have my favorite. So you can actually select your favorites because I think about this is just so many different leaps here. It's good to choose some favorites to hit the X to go back. So I recommend going through, have a listen to lows of them on. Just select them as your favorites and then you can actually quickly find them steps searching through all these tons of loops. We also have scale up here. This is both. So we have Mitt Major Minor Niva Any. Let's try minor. So this would be minor scales center that then we have majors. That should generally sound a bit happier generally. Majors. Ah, happy of miners. Assad. Huge over simplification, but it's kind of true. Okay, lets try. Niva says to b'more experimental stuff, world music Perhaps I'm not gonna play all these loops because so many off them. I do recommend just going through way. Interesting. Okay, so you can just search here. So let's search for jazz, and we should have some just sons. Okay. Now, you can actually, uh, create some loops just from these apple loops. So that's great a beat, just some apple it. So let's find instrument. That's reset this on and it's fine. Simpson. Try this, Okay? And that's close. This now let's try percussion. Try drums. Yes, let's think about Apple Leaps. It's just about trial, Merrin. Just going free. Ready way. One thing you could do as well. I just set up a loop of what you wanted to play over. Play this really what you want the way . Way. Just gonna leap some of these by slights and over here and you're noticed that a loop arrow will appear. Just drag this over. Let's say I got a bit of a grief going now. Just really, really simple. Okay, E One interesting thing with a here this sin Fear. Just go solo list with headphones and move this to another MIDI track. But notice that actually changes information plays on the Frenchman so you can use this information, but play on different tracks. Keep that game play around with some of this now because we've got the loops. But I'm going to use the same instruments before some of the same instruments is before good. Delete the ones we're not using as Well, backspace to delete just so sounds a bit similar. And now I'm gonna continue the drums views before over. Then we've got some leaps, girl. Okay, let's close. Elite library By hitting this loop, but not here. Let's just play the first sexually made earlier on narrow the new loop section. Wait. Arrangement now so you can just hold out alter drag stuff over. Just a copy. Over. Dr This over. He is the first place we have to be careful. Something notes here. The notes might not fit perfectly. This is something we're gonna look at later on. But now it's just getting some songs together, getting some grooves together. It's making stuff into a track. Really? So here, behalf bitter grief. Good. It's gonna bring this over here, then. Yeah, Finish it with this Here. Okay, so this is basically mostly from apple loops. Every guy. Let's have a listen to this on. Just hear what this sounds like. Now. - One thing you did that you might have noticed has actually changed the key. Change it from C major, two d may dream. I've noticed it changed and sound. Have a listen. Now what Apple Loops do is they change to the cave. Your project is one of the best things about them. So so you were in. Ah, try this one stri f major. You notice it's some different now about to say you notice there's still a lot more needs to be Dunn's clashing notes. But Apple, It's a great way just to froze. The fact there just to get ideas going has now It's kind of funky sound in my head. I got kind of a funky idea built from these apple loops. Like I said, the rules he frees, you can use them. You can manipulate them. You can change them. You can mess them around, moving to different instruments. Add effects. Change the key. Really, really simple. Interesting to think to do. Remember, just go to this apple loops button top right click through, direct them over and play around a mess about. That's really what Apple Loops were about. Having fun and making some music quickly. You don't have to use this in your track speaking use. It's Ah, give yourself ideas, so I have to think about and just move around and start making music. Thank you for watching this lecture. Hope you found that useful all about Apple Loops on. I'll see you in the next one 11. Songwriting Tips: Hello and welcome to this lecture. Soon this lecture, we're just gonna have a look at some arrangement and songwriting tips. This is just a quick overview, if you like a really detailed explanation about composing music. Feria recommend checking out my music theory for electronic producers course. Which there, eight hours long. All that music. Very some writing composition arrangement. But for now, I'm just gonna give you a few tips on DTIC number one. Keep it simple. That's it. If you're new to digital audio workstation Joanou to create music, just keep it simple. The more stuff you put in, the more stuff can go wrong. So what I'm gonna do now, it's just going through this arrangement created before. Just make it a lot lot simpler, and hopefully it should make it sound quite bit better. So let's just go through these different tracks and just make it really simple. Let's start off with simple one here if we double click. So bring up the piano roll editor here, and that's just strips in this. Some of this site make it really, really simple. Okay, so this is on the note. F Let's just move. It'll die in the safe on this note here. Me, this up to ST one octave higher and that's it. And just hold out hope it's to copy over. That's about that. Okay, so from 21 2 20 free, just gonna change it so that keep it nice and simple. Okay, 2123. And that's just copy this over and just replace all the jittery pad. Let's start keeping this really, really, really simple. Keep the arrangement as s. I'm just gonna change from the parts. That's really, really, really simple. Just to start with, you can add a lot more complicated stuff, but if you knew to some right in the simpler the better. So let's have a look at this big sore based now similar kind of thing. So that's click on this one hit start here. Enter to go to the stop. If you remember, it was just say be hot. Hold on to say and then go without it and that's yeah, that's it. So this is 12 free. Let's get rid of this change this late on two. Free. Just loop it like this to leave this one on yet really simple, like this one cop this over by holding their boat like any of a Mac application. Okay, now we got the drums. Let's open up the drums with some of these bell sounds. Okay? Stripped out the kick drums on every beat, snares on Be free and claps and beat free. Then we have some high hats grieving in between. Move some of these to happen. So it's really, really, really simple. Have open. So that's opened high hat sound. Here, Move this up to never closed High Hap. That's basically it all I'm doing. Really, It's just stripping stuff out. I think it's about to start simple. Make sure everything works. And then you could add stuff in meeting in a mute. This focal here hit this button here. Sure mutes it. Okay, then we have this bleep slide. Let's just look on this, okay? Remember, we're just season. See how you Catherine. That's fine. This s just say say G and F, which is the fifth in the fourth of state. They're that nice and simple. This guitar pop, the thing about already, I guess a bit harder. So what we'll do is actually go through and just change the loop, you noticed that you can actually do the same of their apple loops as well. So let's just zoom in here and I'll show you what I'm actually doing. So let's just turn this loop off and then just drag through to the first bit. Sleep the first better. Okay, let's just have a play. This click over the bar had it up. Okay, so leave that for the first bet. The second bet. Have a differently. So turn off leap here, drag it out a bit, then just go use the second half. Luke. This let's hear what this sounds like. Members is click all right here a one day and then copy these over nice and simple late. Always. It's already just stripping stuff at once. We've kind of, ah, take us to fight and make sure it works. Then Bacon ads the fed after of the space poem. No excuse that first night which fits no cadence. Track back semen. Then what we do is make some space, actually just seem out and then on hold out hope drag over. So this kind of a pattern now left a lot of space in here. A case of what I've really there Now it's just stripped this out. That's enter takes us back to start, hits baseball, play it waken go through and actually changed in the drums when he used his 1st 2 loops. Hear Clicking the drums Dragon over. Now when the trains the snow as a bit. So these two to full traditional dance pattern okay, enter space, but that we can get free. Yeah, and change. If you have a stuff around snares as well. Certain sections. There's drew out this Lupo because sometimes it thinks you're repeats in the other section , really, of creating a new loop from a see sense. So now I'm just going to click on this, then just have the snares. So this spare arrangement, now second here, what's going on? The case? It's just really, really simple. - You notice there. Griffin just fits a bit better. Just sounds a lot cleaner than previously. Still, still, these a lot more work. He was notices a little collect sound. On this basis, we can always move it to say like this. Hopefully, just get rid of some of the clicks. It was really about just going in zoom in this top right here. It's Bob. Go for it and try and get rid of the click sound for this. Maybe that. Try this. Okay, so it's a you really just ah, outside of this based off of it. So this sounds like no Find the right place to pull it and just go through just kind of neat and stuff up. You see here is meant to be there. OK, that's a lot. Brother can delete that. Hold down all to drug over. It's already doing that. Is the strip in stuff dying? Making it simple because it's so much easier to start off simple and then make it complex than rather Teoh around. We've got a lip going here, so just copy this over. Hold that. Oh, this is ready. How you commit Because it really fast and Garrett man, just drag loops, move stuff around. Let's have a quick listen to this literally Just made this in a couple minutes, stripped it, made it really simple. Tell the case all of that. That's just change some of these drums around. I think you can actually arrange and move this in real time while it's playing. - Okay . So there's just a really quick song. Remember to save with Commander s or go to file on Save at the top. That's just a really quick arrangement. And you notice if we listen to the starts of the selection or last lecture or had created this song and now sounds so much better already done, stripped it down, just used a few notes and kept it really simple. So if you are new to digital audio workstation, join you two. Carriage man, you're new to make music. My advice would be Keep it, keep it, keep it simple. That's basically it. And then build on that. I learn more about music theory than Maura about songwriting arrangements build up from there. The more simple you keep it, the better it's gonna sound to start with. And then you can always add new stuff on the one. The Great tips things about Farage Bundy's Apple Loops. So many great things to using his apple loops. I could just make music a lot more interesting, a lot more fun. It was even sound effects here as well, so you can put some interesting stuff as well, so that's going instruments. Sound effects. Yeah, Blue fall. Uh huh. I can Let's try this. Maybe that one. You have these little arrows as well? You might have noticed. So if you just click on here, it was the era. And this gives is our loop family. So this is basically just a load of over loops that similar. It's quite useful if you want to put these loops next to each other from the same family. Normally recorded the same singer lows of cool effects like this is, Well, we can just do to make stuff sand, but more interesting, bit more fun. So it's basically a quick crash course of how to make a song and a range mainly with apple loops recalling our own midi on audio like with it in the previous few lectures on Yeah, I hope this has been useful. Would be understand a bit more about carriage, but now and how you can just throw stuff in and make music really quickly. Really simply so. Thank you again. Watch this lecture. I'll see you soon 12. Preferences: okay, in this lecture, we're going to be looking at the preferences. So to access the preferences or we have to do is hit carriage ban in the top left and then go down to preferences. Or we can use the key command, command and comma. This will open up the preferences. Okay, We have a few different options here. So we have General Audio Midi Loops. My info on advanced. You have software investment recording, so choose how to record performances were captured while recording over existent regions. So, basically, do you want your information to replace what's going on? So if you recording a midi track and you go around a loop if you want to replace the leap which wanted to merge it together, So this is useful if you're playing in finger drums on your staff, the kick drum and then you've got looping around ad on the snare. Add on the high hat since debut playing the drums all the same time, you could just do each part separately. So you will want merge on. Say, you have several parts in your head and improvising your plane parts on the keyboard. You might wanna replace it So A place Basically it replaces whatever you play emerge will add the parts together. So I would say leave on merge If you're creating drum parts and have replace if you want on more synth parts Where you just writing in parts on the fly. You have truck parts. It's one track put on notifications. Things kind of thing Audio midi. So this is the device. My outputs come out the hate semi which is an external monitor. I'm using this right now. Input device. You have audience type interface. Plug them. So you do have an audio interface. Hit this box here on it, Drop down to select it. They're saying that the vice what output device you want I want hates you might You might want Bill tonight Put You might want to choose your what you want to face. It really does depends effects or enable audio units. So this is if you have any of audio units for your garish baron projects Midi So this the mini driver So really, just I would just leave this checked Leave this as it is on just only really select the output device if you want to change output device have loops, so I'd really just leave this as well. So, Luke, browser keyword browsing filter off more results. So yeah, I just leave this as it is ready. You can go for and change some of these, but I don't think it's really is my info. When they put your name in and stuff iTunes and that kind of thing, you can add your name, artist name and advanced audio recording resolution. You do want 24 bets all. Do you? Normalize Germany. You want to have it normalized. It will. Yeah, it will kind of improve it slightly. So when you exported project audio Auto normalize. That increases the loudness if needed. So projects not too quiet. Basically normalize. It will make a louder if your privates not loud enough. So you want to put music out because of the loudness wars? Generally, music scholar be hasn't have to be super Lebert. Music has to be loud enough. You don't want it really, really quite quite track. Unless film music perhaps, but allergies auto normalize around. Maybe from now. Resolution leave on high, and that's basically it. So the preference is a dead simple, really simple. The main ones, remember, is just open import on order, audio slash money. That's basically the preferences in Gary's button. Like I said, we have to do is go to the top left, go down preferences. Basically, it's really simple, really straightforward. Yeah. Thank you. Watch this lecture. 13. Drummer: Hello. In this lecture, we're going to be looking at the Drummer Instruments. So previously we actually created our own drum track. But now we're gonna have a look at the drummer instruments on. The easiest way to do this is let's just great new instrument by hitting this plus button up here. Or we could go to track new truck. And now let's choose Drummer. Let's hit Crate. Just get close all these tubs here and then I'm gonna make a loop, making sure the cycle area this orange area up here is selected. The notice is loaded some information in already. So if we hit space bar, play this when they meet this other drum loop by hitting this button here, which allow us to meet. So it's a line through a speaker. This is the meat button. There's a few ways we can actually edit this drum track. 1st 1 is hit this button here on this, the library button. This would give us a selection of different drum kits and also give us a selection of different genres on different drummers. So let's choose Rock Logan, and there's just these ways of chains slightly. Let's hear this back. This one does. You can just click through while the track is actually playing a lot of rock ones. Let's try alternative songwriter R and B Elektronik Hip hop. Let's try hip hop a lot. He also change the sounds, is Hiss. Let's try. Crate Digger can change different drum sounds. It's the same bait, but on a different drum kit, this one deep tech. So we'll go through and slept, which we want in the library here. Now, if we had the editor button here, this will bring up this at the bottom. This gives us even more customization with drummer. Okay, so we can actually change the patterns here with this X Y pad. So we have lard simple, soft and complex. But notice when they move this around well, actually change the waves up here. Move up here should be allowed and complex move. A bomb left should be soft and simple. Just go through 51 with different presets. Here. Notice these pictures. Here's what we can add Percussion. I click an icon way, have different percussion patterns. You can change this so there's no hats or this high hats you can add shakeup more percussion in. Turn the kick from on by hitting this button here way, select it. Snap collapse. A different passions here as well. Let's have a follow function, which means the drums follow another instrument. So let's try big sore bass. Another drums will follow this big sore base solo. This on this Also change the swing amount. It doesn't really work. In this instance, we can change Swing from 16 notes that eighth notes that put the swing dime waken. Add more fills by using this filled out here. Think about That's good. Let's hear this in the mix. Okay, so that's how we can create the drama truck. And we can use this to really just go in and create drum loops straight away really easily and just customize it with this X Y pad and just add instruments. Add percussion. Choose different patterns in different fills. So thank you. Fortunate lecture. Hope you found it useful, and I'll see you in the next one 14. Export and Share: Hello. In this lecture, we're going to look at exporting or printing off our mix. So this is really the final stage where we want to show our song of the people on a few things meets do. First of all, we need to make sure it's not clipping. So let's just find ah, lowered part of the song. Let's say here, not really going. Ah, a little bit louder. I'm just good turn the volume down everything. Just maybe half a DB. But there that's playing there. That's lightly. I think it is better to down a little bit more. It's really quick. Way to mix. Just make sure it's not clipping because of his distorts, it can ruin the sun. And now what we need to do is just listen to our track. Just make sure I m from the sounds. OK, E think about backing vocals a bit light of it's gonna turn this down and become panic as well with the pound Not just gonna pannitto left. We won't really every instrument to be heard clearly. So you don't want anything really, really quiet. Generally, yeah, the main thing is just making sure every instrument can be here. So to actually exports or to print our mix or we have to do is put on the cycle area. You can even press the button, see, or just click over drag where we want to share or export. So I want the whole project. Then go walk to share and then go down to export song to desk. And then we can name a project here. Just go call this example. Generally, you don't want to call your song example. You want to call you some something that's easily memorable. So maybe the day or the lyrics saw the song name. It's bullet where you want so you can choose where you want to only choose my desktop. And then you can choose different options here so we can choose high quality, low quality. I'm just good. Choose MP free for now, and she's 256 kilobytes a second. Let's choose this. A. I F f or wave will be higher quality so you can choose 24 bets on compressed. So generally, if you want a high quality song shoes A I F f or wave. I just want a quick mix just to show someone quickly to MP free. Okay, I'm gonna choose MP free export. This may take a few moments on this bouncing when they will appear. That's basically it. Now, if we go to the desktop here it is. Example. Now, if I play this in here, I try. There we go. That's how you export. Pretty simple. Really quickly. A few different options, Remember, NP free isn't this high quality is a i f f on compressed or a wave on compressed So thank you. Watch this lecture Just all about exporting the song Ready Together outside can share your work, Share your projects and share your music over people. So thank you again for watch him and I'll see you say
