1. Introduction: Hi, it's Thomas George. Welcome to this course. Seven things you must know how to do ableto live night. We're going to cover some essential things and able to life. And if your brand new digital audio workstations are able to live nine, I'm sure this course will help you out. So we're going to be looking at the drum rack. Simpler. Midi mapping the piano roll editor, the arpeggio data side chain compression recording to the arrangement. So if you like to learn some of these things, make sure your role in this course 2. What you are Going to Learn: Hi, it's Thomas and thank you for joining me in this course. So this course seven things you must know how to do in able to live now is for anyone who wants to start making their own music on the want to know the essential points ableto live now. So let's get started and I'll see you in the first lecture. 3. 1 - Drum Rack: Okay, so the 1st 1 is the drum rack. The drum rack is a fantastic feature in able to life. It quickly allows you to create drums, and you can customize these in no time at all. So let's just go onto instruments on, then go to drum rack and here we need to drag this to a MIDI track. This allows us to actually drag on samples, audio samples that will convert this into MIDI information. So you can even use the samples that built in able to life so we can go on to samples here on the left on we could search for, say, pick. There's several different examples. I mean, just drag literally just drag it over When we play this here for the play button, this will be the sample. This will actually matchups this midi note as well. This is currently see one. So if you have a midi cable look, then you play see one to find the right now. Here we go. Let the media cable see one. If we look over to the right here, this is the actual wave. So we actually change where you want the way to start with these arrows. Notice size different can change the end point as well. There's a few of our options as well. Obviously the volume transposition. So make higher Alero fade in, fade out so you can have slur attack along the release we're sure to release if we choose to for Kick Drum. Really worry about that too much so you can add on the telephone. We can addle the filter as well. Resonance. We can also warp it and changed the way it's actually played. So choose some of these options here. Could use tones, texture. A few of the ones. Let's just turn off the filter by hitting this yellow button. Let's choose textures. What? Some two different with this kick drum of the samples. We'll make a big difference. Okay, let's add on snap. Like I said, you can use their own samples, so I've got a sample pack a Rolex luke one. This does not come available to life. A recommend building up urine samples was the one that able to turn are pretty good, but it's always a good idea to build our own sample library. So that's just drag this snare down to D won when I played the one. No sense it's loaded here. We can change the what types that choose complex. You can transpose it. We can play this in our fingers and the finger driven. We can even click on a blank slot up here in the session view on their contract. This up hit bay for the pencil till we can even just drag in what we want. So from typing the information, let's just play this. There's a loop really, really simple. Okay, let's just add on a high hat. So let's just find a hat. This is a from a sample Pakal Lex Luger. It does not come available to life. I just thought I'd show you a few of the samples you can use the power of sample packs. Really? Let's put the sun f shop. I'm gonna put this again, but this time on, G and I'm gonna actually add on our page a tick and addle effects onto the drum rack. Just really fantastic as well. Let's go on midi effects and choose arpeggio later. Just arrived This over to Jay change the rate to 24th. The amazing thing about this will actually create a kind of trap hip hop feel on the high hat. So let's click on the MIDI information again up here and now you can type in the hi hats. So let's use be for the pencil talk. Okay, let's say this back. That's simple to actually just create a beat of the drum rackets so simple and so effective . Like I said, we can add effects. I'm just gonna add on a ping pong delay onto the snare. Let's hear this back. Now. Be able to go in and change the facts. That's just decrease. The weather might. Okay, so that is the drum rack and how you can use this quickly in able to life. 4. 2 - Simpler: Okay, now we're going to quickly look at the simpler. The simpler is quite literally, a simple version off the sampler. So we have to do is go onto instruments simpler and just drag it onto a midi track. And all it really does is convert this audio information into MIDI so we can play it on limited keyboard. We can use MIDI data on just add in a row in melodies, riffs and pictures. So all we have to do is drag a sample into this box here. So let's go on to samples. And then let's choose one of these samples that come of able to life drag it down. And now, when replay I midi keyboards or even buttons on our computer cabled, it will trigger the sample and we can use different pictures. We have a few different things down here. Quickly run through. So we have the a. D s are so they attack the decay, sustain and release. So if we increase the attack will notice it takes a bit longer. She played the sample. Okay, then we have stuff like the volume and then going across. We have a filter so you can cut out some of the highest different filter types, the lows and the highs. And these the middle's this kind of thing, or vice versa, but that the middles and lose the highs and lows So residences, well, it creates a peek at the filter cut off point. It's just a really simple version off the sampler, so if you just want to quickly froze him for them, I recommend having a look at the simpler. 5. 3 - MIDI Mapping: Okay, now we're going to look at Midi Mapping. So many mapping allows us to use our medic abled or mini device, and a sign certain knobs or keys in the medical device or keyboard were able to live nine. So this is really essential for life performance, so you could actually have certain UBS change certain effects, unable to life he needs to. First of all, make sure your media cable to set up in to make sure the remote feature is set up in preferences. So if you go to able to live in the top left, go to Preferences and then click on Link Midi, make sure you've got this remote section here, selected says, Make sure this is turned to yellow, and then all you have to do is hit command and m click the thing you want to change and remove the doll you want to change it with. So I'm gonna change the dry, wet amount on the Ping Pong delays. That's the delayed reverb. Well, after his click on this, I'm gonna move this Diallo here unnoticed now that there is a small number next to what we just move. This one says 16 17. So that's this device here. Okay, let's hit. Command them to close this. And now when I move this dial, Well, actually, move this. Now appear. So I'm just gonna move myself out of the way, and I'm going to move the dial. No, you can see it's moving this dry, wet amount. Okay, so let's play the lute back. I'm gonna move this dial, you should hear the delay, and then delay is gun. Okay, let's add on a never effect. So let's go on. I should let stay in this room rack. This time, I'm gonna change the transposition off the kick drum zoom and I hit commanded m hit this transposition button. Make sure the kick from a selected so make sure just kick drum set to hear. Because before unsnapped, that would change the transmission transposition off the snare. So I'm gonna slept. Collect kick drum hit command M click this transposition button here. Okay. And now I'm gonna move this dial here. Then I'm gonna hit command them. And now we're gonna actually move this dollar. It changed the transposition off the kick drum, so let's just do this one above changes the ping pong delay of the snap. Okay, so we do have a fume or musical things. We can do a bit more performance stuff. So if we go on to audio effects on one of my favorite ones is called Fade to Grey. So just type to fade up here. And then if you click on this down arrow performance and D J fade to Grey so we actually drag this onto the whole of the drum rack and then all I have to do you just assign this dial here. So hit commanded M. Click this and then I made a keyboard. I'm gonna choose this style here. And then he commanded and play loop. This is the fate of Gray, and when it don Media Vidal's as well, there's quite loved musical stuff we can actually do with this mini map feature, and that's pretty much it. It will need a keyboard or maybe keyboard like this one, which kind of allows you to actually move dials and knobs. You do get some many cables that don't actually have any dolls and up. I prefer these kinds because there's a lot more you can do this all these buttons. You compress all these dials and favors and stuff so you could move stuff like this. We could move. These dial's become All this can be mapped and it gives you a lot of options, especially when you want to use able to life for a life performance. So thank you, fortune. This point I helped see in the next one. 6. 4 - Piano Roll Editor: Okay, so the next essential thing you must know in able to live Now it's the piano roll editor. This is basically where we can draw in Midi notes, and we can make cause melodies so we don't necessarily need to use a mini keyboard like this. It can help. Sometimes just using piano roll editor is more than good enough. So that's actually just go on Instruments on, Let's choose on log. Use the drop down here on Let's Choose Strings and here we can sample some of these sounds . It's one day, and that's just drag it over here into a blank space, and this will make a new MIDI track. Then all we have to do is find an empty space. So I need to find a space in the session view here and just double click on this will open up piano roll editor. So it's very similar to under other digital audio workstations like Logic pro we consume in this magnifying glass, and then we can literally just drawing what we want. So going across left to right is time on. Open down is pitch, so the high you are, the higher the pitch, the lawyer, while the lower the pitch. You'll see the small headphone icon here. This means you can basically here notes controlling cause we can play individual notes. We can hit bay Teoh, Have the pencil tool on delete backspace. Let's just draw in. Some courts scroll down on and it's good drawing a c major. Oh, just really simple. Next one from a minor. A different position. So we have the in the top instead of the bottom one that we can drag notes along about this Or we could just backspace. We'll hear a and just drag over. Let's say Okay, we can select all of command and a and you shift All right down arrow. That's kind of basic overview off the piano editor. You can drawing melodies as well. So let's just brought in something here really simple Laysan from wrong You hit Bay. Just drag it way wants me, and all you do is hit. Play the slip hit space bar or hit the play button on the cliff way. Want to play this with a different instrument? We can even move this clip somewhere else, so let's just go create new mini track on Let's just find Tom plucked right over the sea dry. Then we could distract this media information over. Ah, that's just the general editor. Really simple, very senator of additional audio X stations, if you used additional audio workstations, just allows you to quickly first of Finn. Of course you can use amid a cable, Senator this one and you can physically play in. We'll tell you on the side here on this cable what notes you're playing. Let's just do that. Let's just place him for them. So let's just track this time. Then we have to do is hits this button here, the circle and then make sure the match names turned on this button here. I'm just gonna recalled something then, just so I can show you the piano roll at the store after, Okay, Space bar. And then let's just to wrap this up. Okay, so you men notice isn't quite in time. Didn't quite look perfect. So weaken or quanta eyes there said, basically, just move this in time between command today in command. And you that cuantos it might've noticed bang on the line. Now some of these aren't quite matched up, so you can always go in and drag them to the right place. Because when your human who don't always play stuff perfect, there is human errors as well. I think that looks about right now. That's just play this buck. We can turn off the match. Then you might notice the clip didn't start there. That's because when I hit record, I didn't play in straight away. So what you can do? Let's get this small arrows to drag them to where we want the clip to start. I'm no destroyed away that that's not in the right place. Okay, now let's like this back match today. Even at the drums, I played a clip before. A few things we can do with your camera roll editor Eva draw in the parts like this or become recording the parts of a mini device or MIDI keyboard. So if you have a media cable because physically play in and then we could actually go through on just edit anything that we didn't quite play in right, because as a human that robots we can't play perfectly in time, but at the time we can play quite good in time, but not always amazing. So thank you for watching this. I'll see you in the next one 7. 5 - Arpeggiator: Okay, Next, we're going to look at the arpeggio later. So what? They are vegetated does. It takes cord and it plays. And separately, if you just have one note in the court, it would just play this one note over and over again. We have two or more notes. It will play these notes and we can choose what order we want. These notes the plane on a speed. We want to play these notes. So let's go back to the media information we had before I was gonna delete this top line here. So we just have these cords here. So we have this c major chord on this, a minor court. All we have to do is go onto Midi effects because it is a midi effect and drag on our page eight here. Notice that she goes before the instrument because, well, it does effects the MIDI information before it goes the synthesizers. So before it processes actual physical sound, it's actually arpeggio hated. So let's assume in on this arpeggio later, and here we have a few different options. So we have the rate. So this is sync with the clock of the tempo. So If you have a fast tempo, say drone base at 170 the rate will be quicker. And if you have a slower tempo, say hip hop 90 beats per minute of a slower rate. But it will always sink to the tempo unless we have it free by clicking this button. I profess Sync personally makes sound a bit Maurin time. Let's just play this year so we have Teoh change the rate with wells that's turned off the sink. You can't get interested in tremolo effect. A lot of time of clothes gate as well. We have to get all the way down. It would create more of a staccato, feel the gate all way up. It would create a smoother, more like garter feel. Steps is the number of actives the moment It's just plain what's in the middle information if you have one. That ad in the directive, so you ellipse quite small the moment, so don't actually add on much more actives. Let's just leave it on. What confronts pose? It can change the key, this kind of stuff as well. It also changed style off the arpeggio. So this is up has tried down, but that there's a few of what different ones we can choose Grieve as well, so you can swing it a bit. Okay, let's hear this in the mix that stays with the drums. I think a quick review of the are pejeta able to live a really easy way. If you don't really think of any melodies, you feel like this is a bit more spa going on this. You can just bang her Page eight on some chords, a really quick, cheeky way of actually get some interesting ideas. Like A said, There is stuff like swing and the rate you can see on the number of steps views to make it signed a bit more interesting than just a standard straight arpeggio. 8. 6 - Sidechain Compression: OK, Are we going to look outside chain compression society? Chain compression basically is a compressor on. We can actually send it to a never instrument, so it docks down when it's playing. So when one thing plays compressible duck another instrument down. This is useful for a lot electronic music where you want space to be heard. So when there's one instrument being played, I never instrument will get quieter. It's really simple to do. I'm sure you definitely will know the sound of it. Even if you're not too sure what side chain is, You will definitely recognize the sound of side train compression. What we have to do is actually create a ghost track. So this is just basically a track that isn't playing. Other thing is playing samedi information that has an instrument, but you can't hear it. So the whole purpose of this is to just trigger the compressor with this midi information. Okay, so I have just got this going up. I was awful, but this won't be heard. Someone turn off this track here and then not here in the whole point of this is so we can send a compressor to this so inside chain with the compressor. This information all we have to do is go onto audio effects and shoes, compressor and dragged onto the instrument. We want to side chain and then we have this little drop down button here. Let's just zoom in and then we can choose side chain. Okay, So make sure side chain is clicked here and then audio from. And that's just choose when we had before what we had before. It's called analog. It's always best to rename this. I'm just gonna call this side chain. Okay, let's go back to the compressor and there Let's choose side chain from side chain. Okay, now let's just play Sounds the same. But if we decrease the threshold, you can see this G R gain reduction. So in that kicked from actually plays. So going back to that kick drum in this place this beat, it's not stuff going down. What we can do is link it to the kick drum, or we can link it to other patterns. At the moment, it's set to just quarter notes. You can choose whatever river would want. It doesn't have to be straight, but a lot of time is stroke this kick drum pattern we could actually, in theory, just copy this over so it actually hold this down, Hold on, hold to drag over on because sign, change this information festively everything that isn't a kick from now, when the kick drum place, whatever information will be duck down. So we have another bit side trade information here that Okay, so you can see that game reduction going down with the kick place sleeves, a bit more space and we could swap to the straight sound as well of a bit citation information That's basically so chain compression we can add on a never instrument as well . That's just don't go to create inserts Main instrument. I'm just going to bang on instrument. Let's choose analog. Let's try brass. Thats one here. Drive the saver type in submitting information quickly. Okay, so we have C and A. J. It's just track the saver. Um, se a on a Okay, you can even drag it over. So there's no space at all and that we could actually add on a compresses to this because she changed them outside. Change for this one doesn't have to be the same of outside change every instrument. So we just need to go to audio effects compressor. Drag it on and here we go. Same as before so we can go over hit this little drop down button here. Hit side chain order from and choose side chain. Wait here. The gain reduction from the side chain compression. So if you play the first information here a second look. So a lot of time people think side chain is just 1234 a pulsating quarter note or to the tempo, but you can add different side chain. Many information doesn't have to be straight. You can follow the kicks of the kick drum pattern is a little bit more unusual. It's not just completely straight something to this one. You can actually side chain this rhythm as well. So we've got this note in a swell. We just changed it around. So this is basically sideshow in compression and how you can use it Unable to live now 9. 7 - Record to the Arrangement: Okay, so now we're going to look at recording to the arrangement. It's really simple. All we have to do is just get some of these clips them in the order, were happy with so kind of create a bit of an arrangement. And then we can actually record this to the arrangement view, Really? Is that simple? So I'm just just in some of these mid eclipse and then what we have today, it's it record and play it up and trigger some clips, and this will record to the arrangements. Let's just hit record. I'm just trigger. Okay, let's just hit the stop button. Then all we have to do is hit the tab Key. You noticed this recording here has appeared. Then we have to hit this orange button in the top right up here. And now let's just play this back. It's recorded in what we played in the session view. This is really useful. If you ever do a live performance, you could just record the live performance so amazing, and then we can actually go through and change stuff in this arrangement. Views It contains the volume we can actually get in. We get changed in the effects as well. To say We want to change the the rate of the arpeggio and click rate here, and then you can actually change the rate. Oh, just this bit here. So whatever we click on the investment well, actually change on the automation as well. Let me just move myself at the way and I'll show you that again. All that it is a click the rate here and that sink up to the automation here. So if drug down here see automation selected automation surfer, click dry wet Here it says dry wet. So whatever you click will link up to the automation on the instrument, which is really useful. So right here, you can see that actually dragged and move the rate. Okay, so let's just play this back and should be able to hear that the rate has changed when it gets this part. Happy with it. We can always just drag and get rid of these double click and gets rid of them. Okay, that's how we record to the arrangement view. That's basically how we can automate in the arrangement for you as well to find something in the instrument that you want to change. Click it on. Then you can actually edit this in the arrangement view so we can just change this here. That's basically it. Combatants just uses arrows his easiest way. So it starts here on ends here and then just go to file exports. Then we have a few different options. Let's choose master rendering track to use a sample rates 44 100 fine, 48 thousands. Fine as well. Depends what you want but thereby Fine. And then, yeah, the default ones are absolutely finds a lot more we could do but finale. This is absolutely fine, especially if you're news ableto live exports name. It's just gonna call it sample and that's it. Then, if you go find that recording, this one's called sample. Let's just listen to this later. It was a lithe Okay, so these will be in my top tips. The things you need to know for start using lives. This is just the essential things just to get you going to make music straight away
