About This Class

MuseScore is a FREE music notation software that you can use to write sheet music.

Because of its built-in playback feature, the program is also a great tool for music composers.

You can even use MuseScore to write your own play-along tracks to practice your instrument.

This course is part 5 out of 5 of a series of MuseScore courses.

If you’re totally new to MuseScore, I would advise you to start with “MuseScore (part 1): Quick Start Guide”, where you will learn the basics of MuseScore: where to download the program, how to install (on Windows, Mac and Linux computers), how to write your first score, save, print and playback the score.

In this course, you will learn:

-how to make parts. In a part, you can display and print single instruments or a self-defined group of instruments that are in a score with multiple instruments

-how to work with multi-measure rests in parts

-how to use all the functionalities of the playback section, like for example looping

-how to export your score in several audio formats and as a MIDI file

-how to work with the image capture mode

-how to install and use plugins for MuseScore

Note: You can download a PDF-file with MuseScore keyboard shortcuts in the project section of this course.

1. Introduction video part 5: hi and welcome to the course. New score, part five parts playback, important export and plug ins. In this course, you will learn all you need to make beautiful sheet music with a fantastic free music notation. Software called Music or My Name is Martin Cohen on a piano teacher and composer, and I use music er almost every day. This course is part five of a series of courses on you scored in this series. You will learn how to write professional sheet music, court sheets, lead sheets or even a whole, some book or shake book. The building playback function makes it possible to not only use new score to make sheet music, but it's also an unmissable tool for music composers. And you can even use music or to practice your own instrument, just it right out the parts for the other instruments. Then playback your score in Luke moat, and you have a whole orchestra at your disposal that accompanies you while you're playing your instruments. No, if you're totally new to music, or I would advise you to start with part one off this new score course. Siri's, which is a quick start guides to music or and where you learn how to install and start to program, how to create your first score and how to safe print and expert discourse. In Part five of this music or course Siri's, you will learn about parts if you have a score for a whole orchestra. So with more than one instrument, you can either display or print out to stuff for old instruments together. Or you can display and print out parts. And apart is either just one instrument of uric orchestra but can also be a group of several instruments you choose. Other things you learn are how to import and export files. You will learn how to install induce plug ins for um, you score, and you will learn more playback functions like, for example, the loop function. Now, if you don't find the item you were looking for in this course off the music or Siri's, have a look at one of the other parts of his music or Siri's. And this Siri's consists of five different parts. So five different courses. And finally I'd like to thank you for your interest on. I hope we will meet each other soon inside of this course 2. Parts: When writing music for more than one instrument, you might want to have separate parts for each instrument in your score, instead of having all the instruments displayed together one above the other. So in this way you can give each musician depart for only his instrument. So let me explain how to create parts for the individual instruments in your score with this piece for violin, oboe and cello. First of all, go to file parts. Click here on in this dialog box when you want each instrument separately, just like new all and each instrument will be displayed separately. Now, of course, discord with was written in Dutch. But you understand that the 1st 1 is violin. The 2nd 1 is oboe and the 3rd 1 cello. It's written in the same way as in English. Then click OK on. What happens is that you see that the tep for this piece, as is Subdivision four, taps where the first step is still the piece with three instruments together. Second tap detect for the violin. Done attempt for the oboe on to attempt for the cello. No, When you have done this, when you have created your parts you can go to file exports parts and you see that it will make pdf files. And you can just click on safe. Of course, Search for the location where you want to save it on. Then click on. Safe on it. Will showed his dialect books. Parts were successfully exported. Okay, so here are our four pdf files. So the 1st 1 shows cello. The 2nd 1 although the 3rd 1 that's the original score with the three instruments. Now, you see that when I scroll down, it also has the violin part oboe part and the cello birds. So the pdf file with all the three instruments together also has the instruments apart. And then the last one is the violin. Now, when we look at the name Okay. You see that? It puts first the name of the score and Dan the name of the instrument. So piece for violent oboe and cello. Cello elbow. Ah, this is score and parts. So that's the one I showed you with all the instruments and also with the instruments apart on this is the one with the violin. No. Sometimes you want the part with several instruments together. This could be the case. For example, in this music where you want the voices in one parts together and the piano in the other part to do so go again to file parts. And now, instead of clicking New, all click on new and there you can make a part with the voices So we will select Soprano Alto tenor base Andi I will call it voices Click OK, takes a little bit of time on Now you see that this score has some division here. Two taps first the original score and done the voices. Of course, I can also make a part a piano part. Then I have to go again to file parts. Well, you know the procedure now. Now the nice thing with parts is that changes in your score will also show up in the corresponding parts. And also, when you make a change in apart, it will show up in the score. Now, this is true for almost all the changes, with the exception off some layout settings 3. Multimeasure rests: Now, when you have created Spartz for the individual instruments, you see that in a part for a certain instrument that here in the beginning for the violin, you see, multi measure rests. Well suffered a hobo here on for the cello here and here. You see that in the original score? They're not displayed, which is still to be normal. Now I can choose to display those multi measure rests in my part or not. Go to style, general. Score on. When I now uncheck, create multi measure wrists and I click on apply. You can see what happens no more multi measure wrists, but the rests are shown individually. I will put it back on create multi measure rests Apply Now you see that instead of apply you can also do apply to all parts. When I do only apply, this only applies to this score So the cello, oboe and violent will stay will still have their multi measure rests unless I click apply to all parts than all the parts will not have multi measure rests anymore. Okay, Now, as you can see into violin part that the multi measure rests here is broken into two parts . One of four measures rests and one of two measures oppressed. Why is it because there is a signers, an event? This coda. Now, new score does this automatically with any event like a time signature change rehearsal. Mark. Temple change, etcetera. It will place automatically a break into multi measure wrist. No. If for whatever reason, you want a break in a multi measure rest, even if there is no such an event done. Let me show you that. For now. This part here for the cello part. Let me say I want this five. Measure rest broken up. Then first go to style. General and uncheck create multi motorists. Apply. Go to a Well, let me go to his third measure off the five measures and then I will right click this measure going to measure properties on check here. Break multi measure wrist apply. Now you see nothing happening. But when I now go back to style, General Andi, I check again. Create multi measure rests and it'll apply. You see that? Okay. Here. You see that? My multi measure rest is split up in two parts. One of two rests on one of 23 wrists. So remember that I selected the third measure to put the break there, so the break will be put at the beginning of the selected measure. 4. Playback and looping: in part one of this music or Siri's into the quick start guide. I already showed your most of the playback functions, but not all of them. So let me now show the ones that I didn't show you in the beginning of this course. So, first of all, as you know, you have this playback toolbar in the toolbar section. But you can also type F 11 to have the play panel. Let me first talk about the toolbar. So one button we didn't see was this one total loop playback. So when activating this button looped playback is activated. I will talk in a minute. A bit more about this this next Parton play repeats. Well, it's no activated that you see. But when I deactivate it, then repeats in your score will not be repeated. So normally you would have this one on so that repeats will actually be repeated. This one pen score during playback. Let me show you what happens. Go. I go to the beginning of the song on Bond. What? I total this one off and I will put my score a little bit lower. Look what happens here. The curse, Our place and you see it Advance in the song and look what happens. You don't see you don't see the curse or anymore. Normally, this is not what you won't unless you want to have your score fixed so well, I leave it to year When I now activate this button, which is by default a case. Let me go to the beginning. There it goes. So the cursor now follows to score. Okay, let me bring up the play panel. But pressing F 11 you can also go to view on play battle. As you know. Then we see some more buttons. Let me first go to the beginning of the salt. Now, I talked about this loop function and that can be found in to play panel. Here are the buses for the loop function. So first of all, this is to enable the loop function on with those two other buttons. I can set the beginning and the end off the loop. I will show you. Let me first get these a bit slower when I play. I can while playing. Set this pardon to set the Lupin position and click this button to set the loop out position. Let me show you while I'm playing and you see it ultimately re loops Now, now, when I want to have this flags away And so this flex is that where the loop starts. This is where loop ends when I want to have them away. I just click again on the total looped playback button. Enter Gun. Another way to set this loop range is just selecting a range in your score and then click the Tuggle looped playback again. And when I don't click play, it will loop between the two loops markers. Okay to finish. See here a table with some keyboard shortcuts that you can use during playback. 5. Export audio: Once your music is ready, you can export it as a sound file to share it with others. Go to file expert and you can choose here for the four Mint. So the audio formats are MP three wave audio fleck, O'Dea and O G ive orbs. Audio. When you want to save it as an MP three file and you're safe, you will see that new skirt does not MP three files directly, but instead, use it freely available. Lame library. So you have to install the lame library. So you first have to have to obtain this this file. And Dan, you can search for it and install it. We will not do it now. You see that it? I cannot write. But we can. He was another form. But we can, for example, export it as a way file. Okay, I will save it here. Safe takes a little while and let's have a look. Okay. And here is my file. That meal score created when I double click it Here it is 6. Export MIDI: Instead of exporting your music in an audio file, you can also expert your music and immediate file. Now you have to understand what a media file is. A media file actually doesn't contain. The music and audio file really contains the music. When you play an audio file on one computer or are not a computer are on a CD player, it will always sound the same. This is not the case with the media file. The media file doesn't contain the music it contains only informations about which known is played when which instrument is played. Andi, you need the media player. This can be software media player. This is a program on your computer that plays media files and that uses synthesizer sounds either on your computer or outside your computer on a hardware device. In that case, you're connected computer with an interface via media cable to the hardware that contains the sounds. Now, because the media player uses the sounds that are either on the computer so software synthesizers or hard license center size er's outside of the computer, it will always sound different because it depends on the sounds chosen that one synthesizer doesn't use the same sounds as the other. The advantage of a media file is that it contains very few information, so it has perhaps 1% of the size of an audio file. Okay, this said, let's have a look on how to export media file. Well, this is very simple file export on. Instead, off wave you just clique media file standard media file on you click safe and you will your have your media file saved. Did you then can use intermediate player like a software sequencer, for example, a digital audio workstation. 7. Image capture: in part one of this music or Siri's The Quick Start Guide. I already mentioned the image capture mode, but the image capture moat has many more functions that I would like to show you. So you remember the image Get remote is here in the tool bars. When I click, this gray rectangle appears and you can use the handles to put it anywhere you want. So, for example, I want this measures here on I want to copy to my clipboard. You can simply type control plus C and for the Mac command plus C to copy it to your clipboard and you can then use it in other applications. OK, but there is much more when I right click within the grey area. Well, this same gull p as we talked about before, is come trump to see or commend pussy for the MEC. But there is more. You consent to the resolution now. This is very interesting because you can set a resolution that is higher than your skin screen resolution had. This can be very interesting. For example, for projects that need a very high resolution. You can use this. Okay, click again, right. Click again, you can set to have a transparent background or not. Now the auto re sites to page just auto re sizes to the whole page and you can adjust your rectangle in one click to the whole size of the page, which you condemn. Inculpatory clipboards. Okay. You can also define your own regions. For example, I first on this region on I will call this region A I do this by right clicking set standard sized set size a Andi This one I will call my region B right click set. Standard size set size be No, I can simply by right clicking say resize to a It goes automatically to my size A to my read region, a right clicking resize to be it goes automatically to my region. B Unless you can see, I can define up to four regions. Okay, last two options in the image capture mode safe as print moat and safe as screenshot moat. So when I click this safe as this dialect books pops up and you can save your work in PNG, PDF or SPG file on the same thing is also the case for safe a screenshot month now What's the difference? Print mode means in your safe file? You would see the same thing as that you would print your score. So that means, um, page breaks and other invisible stuff you will not see in your image. Screenshot moat means you will see the exact image as you also see him screen. So also with page breaks on visible symbols, etcetera. 8. Plugins: with plug ins, you can extend the functionality off music or even more plug. Ings are not activated by default, but you can find it in the plug ins menu. When you go to plug in manager, you can activate him here. There are a lot off floodings that are preinstalled, others that can be downloaded from the Meuse scored website. I will show you later. No, when I check the plugging on Done click OK, I can done use it from me, then the plug INS menu. So, for example, color notes. Well, you will. When I click here, he will directly see what it does. It colors the notes according to their peach. Let me go back to the plug ins menu to the plug in manager. By the way, when you click here, you can see a description of the plugging in this white area. Here. You can even define shortcuts for your plug ins. And here's a dialect books that worked in exactly the same way as other shortcuts you can define and which I described in Part two. Off this music or Siri's about customizing, you score. Another nice Blufgan is note names. When I go to the plug and manager. You'll find it here. Display gin names, notes as spare your language setting. So let me click. OK, Andi, Now let me activate. Let me click here and you see it sets the note names of all the notes in your score. Of course, there are many more plug ins, some very useful. Some Leslie useful. Most of them can be found on new scores. Website. As I said on new scores website, you can find more plug ins, so go to amuse score dot orc done download plug ins and you confined lots off flooding's. When you don't know them, you will mostly get a ZIP file that you will have to unzip in your muse course plug ins folder.
