About This Class

MuseScore is a FREE music notation software that you can use to write sheet music.

Because of its built-in playback feature, the program is also a great tool for music composers.

You can even use MuseScore to write your own play-along tracks to practice your instrument.

This course is part 3 out of 5 of a series of MuseScore courses.

Martin Cohen is since about 25 years a teacher of physics, mathematics and informatics.  

He taught at several schools in and around Amsterdam and at the European Schools of Brussels (Belgium) and Luxembourg.

He recently decided to quit his regular teaching job to concentrate only on online teaching.

Martin is originally from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.  

He is a passionate musician and composer. Since the age of 8 years, he plays the piano.  

He played in several rock, blues and jazz bands and he has now a jazz quartet.  

At the moment, he teaches (online) the piano, music theory and composing techniques.  

Martin has a masters degree in physics from the Free University in Amsterdam.

1. Introduction video part 3: Hi and welcome to the course Mu Score part three, entering notes, wrists and more and editing your score. In this course, you will learn all you need to make beautiful sheet music with a fantastic free music notation software called New Score. My name is Martin Cohen on the piano teacher and composer, and I use music er almost every day. This course is sparked. Three off a series, Of course, it's on you score. In this series, you will learn how to write professional sheet music, court sheets, lead sheets or even a whole, some book or shake book. The building playback function makes it possible to not only use new score to make sheet music, but it's also an unmissable tool for music composers. And you can even use music or to practice your own instrument just right out, departs for the other instruments, then playback your score in Luke moat, and you have a whole orchestra at your disposal that accompanies you while you're playing your instruments. No, if you're totally new to music, or I would advise you to start with part one off this new score course. Siri's, which is a quick start guides to music or and where you learn how to install and start to program, how to create your first score and how to safe print and expert discourse. In part three of this new score course, Siri's, you will learn how to enter notes, rests and mawr into your score and how to edit your score. Now I hear you say, Hey, but wait a minute, entering notes and rests that's already in the introductory part. So part one of this series. Well, that's true. But in this score, so part three of this music or Siri's you're gonna learn about two different note input moats, and also how to connect a meaty keyboard to enter notes and rests into your score. This way, you can enter notes even quicker than with a computer keyboard. Now, if you don't find the item you were looking for in this course off the music or Siri's, have a look at one of the other parts of his music or Siri's. And this Siri's consists of five different parts. So five different courses. And finally I'd like to thank you for your interest on. I hope we will meet each other soon inside of this course 2. Entering notes: in part one of this music, er Siri's The Quick Start Guide. You already learned how to inter notes. First, you have to be sure to go in, took note, input, moat, selected duration and then entered the notes by either clicking with the mouse in to score or by pressing the shortcut for the notes. Which is, of course, just a letter that corresponds to the note. And, of course, remember that you can select the duration also with a keyboard shortcut. The most used ones are 24 for an eighth note, Fife for 1/4 note and six for 1/2 note duration. Now there are other ways for note input. You can include the notes with a piano keyboard. I had piano keyboard and you can bring up by going to the View menu and on where is it here , the piano keyboard or just with the P shortcuts. Another method is to connect Amedi Input Device Immediate keyboard. I will discuss this later in another lecture, so let me quickly show you how to inter notes with the piano keyboard. So I bring up the piano keyboard now into piano keyboard, how you can drag it wherever you want in the piano keyboard. You see this? See here This means that is the middle C. Now, when I now put it into note input moat. So I will press the end. You see the little cursor appear here. And of course, when I go with my mouse into score, you see this little ghost note. But I will not use the mouse. I will use the piano keyboard. So, for example, the middle C let me first check the quarter notice selected. I clicked on the middle C and there it is. I can now input my notes wherever I want. So the C an octave higher puts automatically to see at the right place. So I don't have to move the note an octave up or down. So that's an advantage. When using the piano keyboard for note input, you have directly the correct octave, so you can use either the toolbar section to choose the note duration. Or, of course, the keyboard shortcuts that when I pressed six or six now then I have ah half note. We're not pressed before then. I have eighth notes now. Another advantage of using the piano keyboard is that you can directly enter the black nose so you don't have to enter it with just the note, and Dan put an accidental into it. You can do it directly. So the piano keyboard has some advantages for entering notes, which are you have directly the right octave. You don't have to move it up or down and out active, and you can put in accidental right away. Now it might not be the right accidental. Perhaps you wanted this F sharp to be a G flat, or it is G sharp to be in a flit, but that's for another lecture. 3. Rests: now how to enter rests. We saw it already a bit in part one of this music or series, the Quick Start guide. So this is more sort of a reminder of how to do it. Now let's assume I just wrote those three notes. See, e g and I now want arrest. How can I do it? There are two ways I can do it with the keyboard shortcuts, or I can do it with the mouse. So let me first show you how to do it with the mouse. Now I'm a note input moat, as you see, so I will have to click this icon here, which is the Eiken Ford rest. So I click it now by simply clicking. You see that when I go into the score, the little blue rest is following the mouse cursor. When I click in the score that it will automatically put the rest in. You see also what type of rest will be entered. This is 1/4 note. Rest. It's corresponds to the note duration that is selected here. When I would put an eighth note, you see that? Oh, I see that my wrist disappeared, so I have to click this. I can you see now this little restless little blue rest changes in an eighth wrist, but I want 1/4 note breast. I can also use the keyboard shortcuts off, of course, five for 1/4 note, and I clicked now in to score. There's my wrist now to go on entering notes. I have to disable, of course, the rest here and now again, I can input notes, so I put another notes. I will put the same notes on Let me now show how to enter a wrist with a keyboard shortcut . Now this is very simple. The keyboard shortcut for arrested simply zero. So you enter first duration. Now it's already, um, quarter. Note. If it's not 1/4 note, you can put it. I don't know. On eighth note, for example, you click before and done. You can enter the zero, but I don't want an eighth rest. I want quarter rest, so I click again to five. I hold shift and now e and G, and that is how you can write courts in you score 5. Accidentals: accidental is can also be made by using the mouse or by using keyboard shortcuts. Okay, Now, by just using the arrow up and down buttons, I can make it so I will use the aero a button. It becomes a g sharp one more time. The aero a button becomes an A. When I now use the arrow down button, it becomes an a flat. So normally, by using the IRA up buttons, you create Sharps by using arrow down buttons you create create flats. Now this depends and little bit on the key you're in. Of course I can show you this When I goto this step here I prepared already one sharp. So that's the key of G or a minor. If you want Andi, let me write. Also, I will go into note input mode. So end and I will write a G when I know breast my arrow down button. What do you see? It writes an F, but it's an f sharp. The only thing you have to do now is to enter the notes, for example, and there's my triplet. How can I make a top it using the computer keyboard? So with shortcuts, is it also simple? First selected duration. For example, 1/4 note. You have to type five now. I don't have to type five because the quarter note is already selected. Then when I want to make a triplet, I use a keyboard shortcut. Control plus three. Let me do that. The only thing I have to do now is to enter the notes. I see. Do you? Hey, and there's my triplet. To enter more complicated templates, I could do it as follows. First, enter the note input mode, so I type n entered a total duration off your tablets. So this one, for example. Then go to notes tablets other which opens to create stuff with window. And I will make, for example, a top it with a relation 13 eight. Now I can choose to have a number, order relationship or nothing involved to top it and to have brackets or briquettes or not . For now, I will choose relation and okay, I don't have to fill in the notes, so let me just do something. And here's my tablet. I will bring up the droplets creation window. Now you see that you have several options. As I said, you can choose to have a number instead of a relationship and you can choose to have nothing you can choose to have. Brackets are no brackets. Now on the left side, you can see the different examples with without briquettes with number relation Nothing. Auto bracket. New score puts brackets. There were really necessary. Okay, let me get out of here. What I want to show you is some special cases. For example, I want to make a trip with with 1/4 plus an eighth note. I will start by simply making a simple eighth note. Triplet. First of all, a type end to go into note input. Moat. I choose the duration. For now, it's already selected what I wanted 1/4 note and I type control and three to create a triplet. Now, when I want to have the first note, 1/4 note and the second note an eighth note. What I do is first type five, which selects the quarter. Note that my note. Then type four for eighth note and type my note. Let me show you another special case. I want to show you a triplet in a triplet. First, I will create a normal triplet with a duration of two beats. Grace notes: when I want to add a grease note toe, let me say the first note of this melody. I can do it by opening the grace note pellet into pellets section and I can drag the grace Note to this note still is note where you want to add to the grace note to becomes blue. There it is. Now it automatically adds the grace note to the same note as the main note. So you have to use your arrow up and down keys to get the note you want. I will use one time the aero down key. Now, if you want this g fled to be rather than f sharp, you present j No. With this grace note selected, you see, it's blue. So it's selected. You can add a slur by simply typing s. Now, this slur looks a bit strange because there are handles around it, which enable you to change the shape of the slur. So let me click here, toe, get the handles away. And here is your Grace note with slur. Okay, there is another way to add grace notes. Let me quickly delete all this. The other way is to select a note. You want to add the Grace notes to and double clicking here a double click and Garrity's And again I go down one step with my arrow key. I double click again here and here are meant to grace notes again. I can use my arrow up and down case, for example, to make those to raise notes. 9. Cross staff notation: As you can see in this score, the left hand plays an arpeggio, which includes notes that are on the right side of the middle C. Now they include a lot of ledger lines. If you see it's easier to use in this case, cross Steph notation. Now how can I make Mu score to write those notes in cross stuff? Notation you can. If you select a note, use the keyboard shortcut control plus shift, plus the arrow up. I will show you now this moves up only one note. Now. This is only practical for some situations, but in most situations it's more practical to move up a whole group of notes. Let me for now, move this note back So control shift plus arrow down and I will now select a whole group of notes. Now, the notes that I want to move to the staff above are selected. I only have to use the same shortcut control shift plus arrow click here to de select the notes. And here's my are Pageau in cross Steph notation. Of course, you can also use the control shift plus aero down when you move notes from the upper stuff to the stuff below. 10. Multiple voices: when you have two different rhythms at the same time in the same stuff like is the case in the first measure here, you need multiple voices. Let me explain this by telling you how I made this for this purpose. I will first delete the notes that are here first go into note in promote so I press n Then I will write the rhythm off the upper notes. I type six because the upper notes were half notes first a d and then Anne to write the lower notes, I have to use a second voice here you can choose the voices. You see that we're now in note input most for the first force. For what voice? So I will again click on voice to know I can enter my notes. I want eighth notes. So I select eighth notes. I will enter the melody. 48th notes. The next note was 1/4 notes. So I tied five and then my note. Then again, eighth notes and my notes. Yeah, and then five for Korda notes. And that's it. You see that the other voice uses other colors. Green voice one has blue colors. Voice two has a green color. Also the cursor here is green. Okay, you got go out off note input mode by typing end and I will one time click here toe un select this G And here is the melody that I showed you before. As you can see, you can go up to four voices normally voice one and one voice three have their stems up. Voice two and voice for heavier stems down. As you can see here now, sometimes one having more voices. Three or four voices. The stem is not in the wanted direction. I can manually change the direction of the stem. Let me show you that with this single g here I can select the note and then simply use this I can hear. And now it has its stem pointed upwards, clicking again Andi. It returns to its initial state. Now. In this next score, you see that when adding more voices, wrists will appear where a voice is at that moment, playing nothing. Sometimes those rests needs to be in a score, however, Sometimes they don't belong in the score. Like with those two rests here you could delete the rests, but that's not a good option because when deleting arrests, you will have problems editing the score later. The best way is to make them invisible. To do that, just select the rest, and then one method is to go into the inspector and uncheck visible. Now you still see it because it selected its green. But when I click here, you see that it's great out, which means that you can still work with it. You still see them in the score, but not in a printed or exported version. Let me do the second dressed also, and let me show you another method to make it invisible. It's just with the keyboard shortcut V. Ad instrument and tablature: Normally, you add an instrument in the beginning when you start to create a score into Start center. But what if you created already a song and you want to add instruments? In that case, goto, add it. Instruments on. If you don't find your instrument, you can click here and look if you confined your instrument in another style. If not, you can always try all instruments, or another method is to type in the search books. Your instrument. Arrests can be entered by first typing zero. What it does is our top zero. Now it highlights this rests symbol. You can of course, also just click here instead of typing 20 Which means that when I now enter my note duration shortcuts on the computer keyboard, it will enter arrest with the corresponding duration. So for the whole rest, I type five. You see that after I entered arrest, it stays in rest input mode. Now I can enter for example, an eighth rest by entering before Ondas. You see, it stays in arrest. Input moat to get out of rest input moat. I type again zero and you see it's not highlighted anymore. I can now enter notes again. Let me now enter a dotted quarter note. In that case, you have to first select the dots and Dandenault duration. So either by selecting it here in the toolbar or with the keyboard shortcut adult. So I type a dot and the Fife for 1/4 note, and there's my daughter's quarter note. When entering dotted notes. You see that after entering the doublet note, the dot stays highlighted. So to get out of this moat, press adults again. Now I can enter normally a note without a doubt, for example, 1/4 note by typing five. How to make ties in the rhythm input mode. Well, let me say I enter 1st 1/2 note and then I want this half note tight with it with an eighth note. I first entered the eighth note. What I now do is to go back to the half note by pressing two times the left arrow button one time second time. I can now add a tie between but both notes by pressing the shortcut for a tie, which is the plus When I want to enter triplets, I can do it by first selecting the total duration of two tablets.
