About This Class


Welcome to the third class in Modern Folk Art series! In this class we will use birds as our main element to make the colorful and attractive paintings!

You don't need any special materials in this class, just drawing materials like pencil, pens and any painting medium like watercolors or gouache with brushes, color palette, rough cloth, bowl for water, etc. along with sketching papers and watercolor papers. 

In the first two lessons, we will concentrate on drawing the forms of birds from reference and then decorating it with various attractive florals to give it a folk art look. I will use lots of references of birds to explain it's body so that you will understand its structure and also the special characteristics birds have which look really good in decorated paintings.

After all the drawing part, we will see various elements in painting which contribute to give a folk art look to it. I will show it by painting different colorful sketches. And at the end, I will give a complete demonstration by painting an illustration and I will explain it's each step too!

Hello! I am Utpreksha.

I am a Fine art graduate in drawing and painting. I like to handle different mediums and experiment with them to find various techniques that create interesting visuals. I love to use watercolors the most as it is lovely to work with their flow. I believe art should be created with a free mind which is why I work with spontaneity. I would love to teach various techniques of using colors to students and help them create their unique artworks!

I believe that artwork always turns out to be satisfying when we enjoy the process of creating. :)

1. Hello!: Hi everyone, welcome to another class in the modern folk art series in which we will use both as our main remit to make drawings and paintings. In this class, you will need the usual modalities like pencils or pens for sketching. And watercolors are Bosch with its supporting materials for painting. Along with sketching queer person watercolor papers. We will first start by looking at the basic structure of ports. I will be using lots of reference images to explain both body. Then we will do sketching from differences. With that gained understanding. I will then show you how you can decorate the board's using various floral insults. After all the drawing, but we've been, move on to painting. I've only gives some tips and tricks on how you can feed any decorated drawing to make it look into a modern folk art style. And at the end, we will make a complete illustration, which I will explain in detail from start to finish. You haven't had a lot of drawings and paintings at the end of this class. So without wasting in advance, if this dotted. 2. Drawing birds: Let us start by looking at the basic simplified shape of books. I normally draw a generalized form of a board and not necessarily draw any specific way. But I like to bring different visual characteristics of different boards and make my own. You can make a specific board like Barrett, flamingos ones or dogs, or draw any general form of a book. But to draw, either way, it will benefit us to understand the structure of ports so that even if you modify any part of its body, it will still look believable. I will not show this in a scientific point of view, but I will just present my observation which has helped me to draw birds easily without reference. But yet I still use reference to get variety in the forms. We can divide the board into three parts. Forced is the head, middle, and the biggest part is the body. And the third part is the P. We can consider their veins to be the part of their body as they're attached to it. And when Xunzi did, We can opt not to show their wings and still call them bolts. Same with the legs. We can decide to show them to give a character or award them to draw a simple form. Let us see the variety in each park. On the head, big alone comes in many different shapes that are small, tiny beaks and also longer runs, sometimes as long as their body. Then that are needed. Leg beaks of hummingbirds and a beak of patterns with a gulf upper part. There are stubby ones, are flat bones like spoon bill. Then there are various colors to the big stew and also multicolored or decorated ones. About the head shapes. It does mostly go from the top. Sometimes we make the mistake of drawing the goal of the belly's starting from the naked self and the structure looks a bit off. The lender of the neck plays the most significant rule. Yet, when drawing a profile view, draw a small straight line down the beak and then start drawing the body to look good. Now let's talk about the body shapes that are small, long, bulky, lean, flat with long neck or the short run with the COVID bag, or a goal for the belly. Just like the beak, there are various types of bills that had long, short, too long, and too short. Fan like etc. Some balls have tails which look like extension of their body. And some look as a different part attached to their body. All, these are the basic parts every board has. Apart from that, many boards have at least one specific characteristic, such as lung next, various types of crust, different attractive colors, as well as patterns, wing shapes of different types and sizes, long or short legs, or even wide feet and many more. Now let us draw some balls with simplified shapes. I will suggest you to avoid any unnecessary details. Remember that we are going to fill the insides of these shapes and around it with decorator Florence. I'm trying to draw different shapes with open up growth rings from you can add some visibility. But try to leave some space so that I could add in extra busy. But this is my V of making more than full cart coins. You didn't have your own method. And it refers shortly. Decorating the birds: Now that we know the basic anatomy of the bowl, and we can also make it into a form of our own. We can start thinking about the ways to decorated. In my previous classes, like making Florida Borders, I've shown how you can make floral motifs. These are some of those selected motifs. You can refer to that section of the class if you want. But just to summarize the process, select the reference image, draw rough sketches from it, design a form and simplify it if you work. And these are the borders I have made using those motifs. We can also make use of these in decorating the boards. I'm showing you some more examples of rural inserts that are more simpler ones, which I will prefer to draw inside the ball so that the visual doesn't look too complicated. Let us make, when she inserts, we can refer to while making the decisions. To make such designs, keep the shapes simple. Make use of simple geometrical shapes, and combine them to make a form. For instance, in this drawing, I used an upside down triangle with curved corners and added leaf-like details to it to make a flag. Use lines, simple leaf shapes, circles, triangles, squares to make flowers. Then you can combine various flags together to make a different motif. The process of making a new form is sometimes repetitive. You use some elements again and again, or mix-and-match some to see if it works or not. Sometimes it works, but sometimes it doesn't. We need to keep experimenting to get newer forms. I will provide a PDF of this, but you can use to decorate the boats. But I would also encourage you to make your own forms, a desert fun process. Combine them with these forms to draw on the books. You can download the PDF from the resources section. Now let us see how we can arrange these designs on the bird's body. I've already drawn for different boards here, but just wanted them with the fluids inside and rounded. We can look at the composition of Bartlett. But right now, just focus on converting the boards into four cards. Keep the sheets of floral motifs with you while doing this, so that we can quickly pick one from there and fit in the sheep. However, revolt the sheep dog Fleurus is a great tool when you're just starting out. Now, the process is simple. Start drawing one floral motive, and if you want, you can modify it according to the overall shape we are drawing it in. Then fill the remaining part, any 4D gaps with smaller, simpler flowers or leaves. Then I started filling its ring with leaf shapes. I like to add drama to two shapes or lines along with Florida's to get what I individually. So I fill this with what declines and fill the gaps of the body with some sofas. You don't have to do this, but I wanted to see which floss around it. So I went ahead and drew these rounded, steep and covered looks. In the same vein. Let us regulate other boards too. While drying inside the size in mind. When drawing in a smaller board like this, you don't need much floaters are the ways it will look too complicated and that will not be any breathing space in the visual. Now, I will complete the remaining books. I've finished this board's deal with lines similar to any leaf to blink and added some berries and leaves. Then the last board with simple lines and a fly. In the next lesson, we will see radius ways that contribute to create folk art style illustrations. 4. Ways to paint the shapes in folk art style: In this lesson, we will look at the four simple factors that will contribute into making the painting look like a folk art style. It is not necessary to have all the elements in your painting. You can have your own ways and steps to make such paintings. And just giving some idea so that the classes will be smoother for you. You can consider this as steps to complete the painting. I'm using these warm colors to make the first printing. I've pre-mixed colors in the palette in sufficient quantity. Let us pause, draw a circle to establish an outer sheath. I've recently started liking says different outer shapes rather than squares and rectangles. It also looks good. Vensim shifts from the inside, extend outside. Let us look at the force point to paint in the folk art style, which is shading. You can choose to add shading or color mixing in all the parts in the painting or use it like mean by only shading some selected parts. Makes dark and light shades of the same color or mix two different colors together. I'm using yellow-colored at the tip of the feathers and mixing orange color with it to get a nice shadow effect. And then I'm painting with similarly. In the next stage, I am drawing a simple book. I'm mixed light and dark on its head and added a dot on it. And ended up with. The next part is adding by the non-polar just after filling the beak shapes. Besides the mood of that building. So even though I've used majority of Dell and dark colors anymore, when I use this bright yellow color as the background, the mood of it instantly changes and makes it a vibrant when I'm giving a word revolts on the background so that the process becomes quick and it can contrast well with the opec, the tailings. In this painting, the blue used is bright and saturated enough. So I decided to add a light grayish pink as a background. You can also choose to add the background before any of that element. It doesn't exiting a base below. For the complete painting. I selected red color for this bending. We can add a darker less after this layer dries. Even if you want to add shading over this, you can just blend it a little bit, clean water at the ends and the rabid, this background. The effect, let's diffuse and delicate. Now we can start adding smaller designs on this was everything plays. I switched to a smaller brush to get dropped in lines within. As I've given a watery portion, the background, the drawing is still visible year at the base of the drawing before starting to paint. You can refer to that. Well, adding these details in other two paintings with opaque color, I drew some flags on the background and painted that do. The dealings in this painting is a bit smaller than the other. And the last and final step in making the full cup painting, and in my opinion, the most important one with just the complete loop off your design is adding my dealings. This is my favorite part of fall, which gives the finishing touch. I would suggest mode to overdo it. Just add whatever you think is necessary, but also try to balance it in the complete painting. It really makes the painting look more interesting. Maybe how the Vedas important and magic before me. You might find a different magical making that more than full cart. So it is good to have your own. In this, we have complete illustration from start to finish in the next lesson. 5. Making an illustration: This is the last lesson where we will make a final illustration using gosh colors. I will show the complete process of it from start to finish. I fostered some rough sketches on sketching paper to decide a composition. I had roughly decided that I wanted to make something in triangle. So I did small thumbnail sketches to see how one single board or two boards would fit in such a composition. I also do other florals around the boards roughly. Then I selected this composition with two boards. I then sketch the shape of the bowl and sketch to see which flow roots will look, Gerben it. And then drew one part of the composition. The design being symmetrical, I only have to draw when part of it, and I can trace it on the other side. After drawing a triangle on the final sheet of people, I divided it in two parts and started drawing on one side freehand. And also added the flash. Will complete the left. But you see that after completing the painting, I felt the composition lags and balance outside the triangle. So I added more elements in the upper part. But for now, I completed the brain on one side and placed it on the other side using buy the paper. And this paper which I have built with the softer graphite pencil, legs XB and above. The tracing paper and a drawing paper. Well, for accurate tracing, the drawing is complete. It is now time to start by reading it. The decide the color scheme. I use this app called colorant. There are many color schemes people have already made. You can save them by liking it. For today's painting, I'm going to use this color scheme. Like always. I like to mix the colors beforehand. It is absolutely okay if your colors turnout slightly different, they just need to suit each other well. Let us fill the background for this time. My process of painting this illustration will be to false give all the washes on every part, and then proceed to pin the smaller designs and then add the buildings wherever necessary. After completing the background with light orange, I painted the bolts wings by mixing light and dark purple and finish painting the board is with the same dark purple. I then painted the other DPs like flags are grist of the boards and also the floss outside of the triangle. I wanted this to be the accent color. I used it in lesser and smaller places. The opaque washed on every part of the painting is complete. I will now start by adding smaller details with a smaller brush. I added some deep dealings with white and also thin lines around the shapes. But even though this painting was completed, it felt like something was lacking the outside of the triangle, as I told earlier, and print it on the opposite side. And after painting these fluids, it made the painting look finished. I really enjoyed making this painting and also the complete class.
