About This Class

Sketching is about taking what you see or think and immortalizing that moment to be consumed at a later time. Mobile sketching is using your phone or tablet to do the same thing.

One way to master sketching is becoming better at ideation.  This class will focus on using apps to practice ideation-the process of generating ideas visually.

It will briefly cover a few basic concepts of sketching - projections, geometry, and light-followed by a project on practicing ideation.

The end goal is about harnessing the capability of your smart phone or tablet and making it a functional design tool.

Art Inspired By Everyday Things

Mychelle is the designing artist behind Watercolors By Design. She has been painting for the past 25 years and her artworks can be found in collections throughust the Southeast.

Watercolors By Design was started on the premise to help others be inspired by their surroundings by exploiting the nature and properties of water-based mediums, fibers, and metals. This was accomplished by creating modern art that captured the little moments in life. The art was explicitly expressed to make one pause, ponder, and wonder at the small things often overlooked in a busy day. In those few precious seconds we can to see the bigger picture and remember the reason why life is precious.

1. MS Introduction: sketching is a visual way to quickly illustrate ideas. It allows you to speak a language that's universal. It empowers thoughts, giving them a voice heard outside your head. But thoughts are fleeting, getting them down before they are forgotten. His wife speed is so important sketching we do not want those ideas to get walked down by other distractions that crop it mole sketching tries to replicate the ease of paper and pencil with mobile sketching. The goal is not to replace paper and pencil, but to develop another item in our creativity tools it. Pen and paper are best friends. The reaction time is non existent. Your hands are on autopilot. Mall sketching is more like a new relationship. It feels familiar, but you take things slow until you get comfortable. One way to master sketching It's becoming better at ideation, which is the ability to communicate ideas. Visually, sketching allows one to quickly take down ideas to be consumed at a later time. We are a society that is always on the go. We can use the always on to our advantage. With so much capability in the palm of our hands, this class will help develop your ideation skills using mobile apps 2. Ms OpeningAppv2: you would need a tablet, a phone, some type of tape, and you also need a stylist. We're going to go over an APP called Concepts. It is an app that allows you to produce in vector drawing with a sketch view. This is different because a lot of vector APS mimic the curving point system of normal rectal programs. The curving Point system is good for tracing over an already existing sketch, but not necessarily for quickly sketching something out. When we first opened the APP, it defaults to the last project you had open clicking. The new button creates a different project. Any new blank drawing double tapping the title allows you to change the name. Let's look at the interface. Here are the slots where your favorite tools reside. Selecting the tool locks it into the favorite slot in this section will go over how to configure the campus. Let's get a little dual symbol down. The information here in the top right corner is called a heads up display. Tapping it will minimize it. It shows the settings of what's on or off from a canvas standpoint. The flower looking icon is the settings button tapping this will bring up page options. Here you can change the paper color or texture. Scrolling over to the custom color will bring up the color wheel, the great tight in size. There are a few great choices that you can select from. You can also set a specific page size, but concepts comes with an infinite PE size as well. For this class will be using the color, grid and size options. 3. Pen Tools tunes: Okay, let's take a closer look at the pin tool. Quick in this little triangle will open up options for the pain to first up is the pin with you can vary the with from medium to thick too thin. Next up the seal passage and this is the smoothing I come. You can adjust this to keep the natural hand movement, but let the APP make its own adjustments to smooth the line. This is the cover wheel in aligns with the puppet marker. Coz here is a specially function. You can use the art tool to make the perfect art. Simply move the crosshairs into position and filling your line. The color will only feel the highlighted live see. The same goes for the angles, the ellipses, the rectangle and the line. 4. EachToolUse 1: Let's take a look at each tool we have to work with. Double tap the eraser. This is how we can quickly clear the screen. Let's start with the fix with the same thickness. Stays throughout the length of the line. If you have a pressure sensitive stylus or tablet, you could really compare this to the other tools. Next up is the fountain peon, the with a just four speed of movement. See how the ends flare up. Dotted is well dotted. The wire tool will have a slightly smaller within the other tools. The market can give you a why juicy edge and overlay, whereas the airbrush gives you the soft ages, fill stroke. It's fun for doing quick shades, chattels or blocking pencil lines. Very unevenly, like their lead counterparts. You can also choose the select tool by holding and dragging it over the object. You can select that object, then tap to delete 5. Ms projectionsv2: So this classes where traditional sketching needs mobile technology, we'll be going over some techniques to use to get out what you're trying to say. Sketchy is a purposeful mess. It is quick and I'm finished, but still powerful enough to render cognition. Sketching uses, shapes and perspective to create a snapshot of a three D object. You don't have to know how to draw to be able to sketch just as you need a subject and a verb to make a complete sentence. You need a few concepts to understanding sketch projections, geometry and light. Beyond these Onley practice, remember, the goal of this cast is to use sketching to generate ideas, not to create works of art. There are three types of projections we will cover in this class. Ortho graphic I so metric in two point Ortho graphic. This is a static snapshot of how an object looks from all sides. If you think of a dye, it has six sides and the author graphic view. You would see a Tooni version of each side. More importantly, the drawing is a full scale view with no foreshortened I so metric. This is another form of projection just at an angle at any given time. Three sites are always in view and are never for short. All lines are parallel to the three major axis. Next up is the two point perspective. This is a more realistic projection. You start with two points on the canvass. The object is then foreshortened as it relates to those two points. It is observation from one vantage point. So let's do it exercise. I want you to practice drawing a cellphone using all three projections. 6. Ms geometry: sketching starts with converting what we see into simple shapes. The more we observe and convert the quickly become a transforming concepts into visual ideas from the time job go pain it his perfect circle to now, artists have strived to perfect visual communication to get out of those to see what they felt. Understanding that can be communicated without words we all know are shapes for this section, using only square circles and triangles. Practice converting your environment into simple shapes. This could be your desk outside your house, the refrigerator, things in your car. 7. Ms Shadows2: for sketching ideas. We only need simple shading and shadows, so we will briefly cover shadow in line. What is a shadow is the result of an object blocking direct light. The length of the shadow correlates to the position of the lights. Once in relation to the object, shadows can either be there sharks sharp with blurry edges or just blurry edges. Blurry edges corresponds to the life source being big. Think son. Sharp edges come from a more controlled focus light source. Think lamp. There is also indirect reflected light. This phenomenal happens when light is reflected back onto the object itself. For this class, we will focus on shadow from the human perspective. The Observer always controls the amount of shading for shadows. This means on top of understanding shadows. We must also place value value is how bright and object appears. From a light perspective, the further the object is away, the brighter it becomes as an exercise. I want you to create a shadow. Cici 8. Ms projectv1: I recently spent three months with stroke patients in a rehab hospital. The simple actions we do every day without thought had to be relearned. Some of the patients would fully recover, but others would only fully readjust. It is with this in mind that I would like you to approach ideation. We will recreate an everyday object to really learn the process of quickly generating ideas . We will be working slow. Ideation is the process of visually representing concepts. Sketching concepts takes this practice to the next level. It helps you master ideation by allowing you to take what you have observed and relate that to limitless possibilities. Ideation is constantly asking yourself What if and how about ideation isn't bound by laws of physics? It is this brain storming of the impossible that leads to greater probabilities out possible. You start with a thought for a design, and then you go on to challenge yourself by illustrating different cause and effect scenarios. This is not a product divine class, but in order to understand the thought process behind good, useful design, we will be working with a familiar product. So here it is design and everyday objects that you will normally use with your hands. Sketch out five variations each Answering the question. What if this Waas? He moved? What if the pinky on your right hand WASI mobile? What if the pinky and the fourth digit of your hand was immobile? What is the middle joint on? The thumb of the right and left hand was immobile. What is the second digit on the right and left Teen were immobile. And what if the middle joint on the second digit of the right pain was immobile? Use a piece of tape to replicate the limitations on your hand. Sensory helps with brainstorm. Sketch out each object variation. Set the page size to 11 by 17 inches. Exported Jay Pek file and then posters to the Project folder. Remember, anyone can sketch chicken scratches low. Always look for the simple shapes and rights
